        Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Odds to win the college football national title this coming year.......

6-1-- Alabama-- What else is new? When in doubt.......

7-1-- Oklahoma/Clemson-- Tigers are breaking in a new QB.

10-1-- Ohio State/Michigan-- Year 2 of the Harbaugh era in Ann Arbor.

12-1-- Baylor-- Hopefully their players will be healthier this season.

        15-1-- Notre Dame/Florida State/Tenessee/LSU

        25-1-- Michigan State-Ole Miss-Stanford

        **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud......

        13) Dodgers 7, Padres 0-- San Diego is first team ever to get shut out in its first three games of a season- they've been outscored 25-0 and if I was a Padre fan, it would tough for me not to think the season was over already.

If ever a team needed a series at Coors Field, it is the Padres- they play the Rockies in Denver starting Friday.

        12) Dodgers are first team since the 1963 Cardinals to open a season with three straight shutouts- the '43 Cardinals started season with 26 consecutive scoreless innings. Alex Wood gets the nod or LA against the Giants tonight.

        11) Colorado's rookie SS Trevor Story has four HRs in his first three games; he is the first player EVER whose first four big league hits were all home runs and he hasn't played at Coors Field yet.

        10) Victor Martinez didn't start either game in Miami because they don't the DH in NL parks, but he pinch-hit in both games and homered both times, once rghty and once lefty. Pretty impressive.

        9) Since John Hart took over the Atlanta Braves after the 2014 season, they've made 28 trades involving 89 players.

        8) I still don't understand why pitchers bat 8th; it is nonsensical, but if Reds are going to bat their pitchers 8th, then they have to bat Joey Votto leadoff, right? He needs to get as many at-bats as possible on a bad team.

        7) Yesterday was first time since May 9, 2014 that Miami Marlins, had both Jose Fernandez and Giancarlo Stanton in the same lineup on the same day.

        6) Back when the Milwaukee Brewers played at outdoor County Stadium, when the Brewers hit a homer, mascot Bernie Brewer slid down a slide into a huge fake beer mug- it was very cool. Since the Brewers moved into a domed stadium, Bernie slides down a slide onto a ramp-- no fake beer mug.

Why? The damn ballpark is named Miller Park, as in Miller beer!!!!!

        5) Arizona Diamondbacks loaded the bases 13 times in three games against the Rockies this week, thats an ominous nimber for a team with very shaky pitching.

        4) Aubrey Dawkins transfers from Central Florida to Michigan, where he will play for his dad, former Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins, who is now at UCF.

        3) Trump Hotel in Las Vegas doesn't have a casino in it.

        2) Former Florida QB Will Grier transfers from the Gators to West Virginia, where he will be eligible to play starting in 2017.

        1) Philadelphia 76ers finally put GM Sam Hinkie out of his misery, firing him and letting him say he "resigned", which he did in a 13-page, 7,000 word document that hopefully will guarantee he never gets another job in pro basketball.

This overeducated nitwit screwed up the Sixers so badly- he spent a first round pick on Joel Embiid, who played 23.1 mpg in his entire 28-game college career, his only season ended early by a sore back. He has yet to play one minute in the NBA.

Why did this tick me off? Because I never played college basketball, so I root for guys who rose thru the ranks and got great jobs. Hinkie has set back the cause of people like this ten or twenty years.

                  Inside the Paint - Thursday

Betting on the last month of the Association is often a crapshoot and it can certainly be frustrating, especially if you’re placing wagers early. If you play the NBA on a regular basis, you already know this and seeing starters rest down the stretch has become routine. Going forward, you should “play with care” until Saturday Apr. 16 when the playoffs begin.

That’s when the All-Stars will be in action, something we didn’t see on the hardwood last night and that could be the case again Thursday when Golden State (69-9 straight up, 40-35-3 against the spread) and San Antonio (65-12 SU, 42-34-1 ATS) square off from Oracle Arena.

The Spurs have been known to rest starters more than any other team and they’ve benefited with plenty of championships, but it’s also hurt the game. Tony Mejia wrote a great piece on Gregg Popovich’s style and what we could expect over the last week and half of the season.

While the status of key players is up in the air for San Antonio, we do know that the Warriors will clinch the top spot in the West with a victory. No major sportsbooks sent an overnight number on this game but the three major offshore outfits opened Golden State as a six-point home favorite while the total is 210. This number has jumped as high as 7 ½ as of Friday morning.

Dating back to last season, the home team has won and covered the last four meetings in this series. Golden State earned a 120-90 win on Jan. 25 as a five-point favorite earlier this season while San Antonio avenged that loss on Mar. 19 with an 87-79 victory.

For our purposes, both the Spurs and Warriors have been great fades lately at the betting counter. San Antonio is 8-2 SU but 3-7 ATS in its last 10 games while Golden State is 7-3 SU and 3-7 ATS.

The Warriors have gone 37-2 SU at Oracle Arena but the two losses have come in the last six days and the most recent setback on Tuesday, a 124-117 overtime loss to Minnesota as 14 ½-point home favorites was embarrassing. Including those non-covers, Golden State is 1-5 ATS in its last six games in the Bay Area.

The Spurs survived a scare on Tuesday by barely beating Utah 88-86 as a 3 ½-point road favorite and those close calls have been the norm lately for Pop’s squad. The club is 3-3 SU and 2-4 ATS in its last six as a visitor. Also, total players should note that San Antonio is on a 9-1 ‘under’ run in its last 10 road games. Only one opponents busted 100-plus during this run as Oklahoma City notched a 111-92 against the “B-Squad” of the Spurs.

The Thunder closed as a 12 ½-point favorite in that game and knowing that the Spurs might rest Thursday, placing an early wager on Golden State 6 to 7 points might be a good investment.

TNT will provide national coverage of this game at 10:35 p.m. ET.

Along with this game, bettors have four more contests to follow on Thursday and below is my quick handicap.

Phoenix (20-58 SU, 33-45 ATS) at Houston (38-40 SU, 34-44 ATS)

After last night’s 88-86 loss at Dallas, the Rockets are now one-game behind Utah for the eighth seed in the Western Conference and two back of the Mavericks for the seventh spot. Fortunately for the Rockets, they close the season with four winnable games and three of them are at home.

Starting tonight, the Suns visit as 11 ½-point road underdogs and Houston has owned this series. The Rockets have won seven of their last eight meetings against the Suns, which includes a pair of wins this season, both coming on the road. Houston has gone 6-2 ATS during this span while the ‘over’ has posted a 6-2 mark.

Playing the fatigue factor could scare you away though since Houston has gone 6-11 SU and 5-12 ATS on zero days rest this season, which includes an ugly 2-4 mark at home, both of those victories coming by a combined 10 points.

Toronto (52-25 SU, 41-35-1 ATS) at Atlanta (46-32 SU, 39-37-2 ATS)

Tough game to handicap here because Toronto has dominated Atlanta, winning and covering all three meetings this season and seven of the last eight encounters. The pair just met on Mar. 30 and Toronto captured a 105-97 victory as a one-point home favorite and the game wasn’t as close as the final score as the Raptors led by as many 24 points.

For this game, I have to question the desire for the Raptors. The club is all but locked into the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference and their final five games are completely meaningless, which makes me believe we’ll see a few players rested in these games.

On the other side of the court, Atlanta has a shot to win the No. 3 seed but could easily fall into the sixth spot. The Hawks haven’t been in great form lately, going 2-2 in their last four games and they’re 0-4 versus the number during this span.

Atlanta opened as a five-point favorite and that number is slowly creeping up, which tells me that early money is buying the rest factor for the Raptors.

Chicago (39-39 SU, 33-45 ATS) at Miami (45-32 SU, 40-36-1 ATS)

Similar to the Hawks, the Heat have already clinched a spot in the playoffs and they can also be as high as the third seed or as low as the sixth. Miami opened as a 5 ½-point home favorite over Chicago on Thursday and you could argue that number should be higher. The Heat have all three of their meetings against the Bulls this season and the last two wins have been blowouts (129-112, 118-96). The Heat could be without big man Hassan Whiteside (thigh) for tonight’s game.

Chicago has an outside shot to make the playoffs but it needs to win out and have either Indiana or Detroit falter down the stretch as well, something neither team did on Wednesday. If the Bulls do win this game, they face Cleveland next and the Cavaliers could be resting players since they’re just about to clinch the No. 1 seed. Chicago closes with New Orleans and Philadelphia, so a 4-0 finish is very possible but it starts with a win over the Heat. The Bulls were mired in a rough road stretch for quite some time but they have won three of their last four as visitors.

Total bettors could be scratching their heads on this game. The number opened 205 ½ at one offshore outfit and the Bulls enter this game on an 8-0 run to the ‘under’ and Miami comes into Thursday’s matchup with a 5-1 mark to the low side over its last six.

TNT will provide coverage of this game at 8:00 p.m. ET.

Minnesota (26-52 SU, 36-41-1 ATS) at Sacramento (31-47 SU, 36-40-2 ATS)

The “roll the ball out” game for Thursday takes place at Sleep Train Area as the Timberwolves and Kings do battle. This game actually has some meaning for Minnesota, who will be looking to sweep the four-game regular season series against Sacramento.

Despite losing three straight and failing to cover in five consecutive games against the Wolves, the Kings are listed as healthy 4 ½-point home favorites. I’m not surprised to see Sacramento favored but the number is inflated in my opinion and it looks like the books are begging for Minnesota money.

The baited line makes sense since the betting public just saw Minnesota upset Golden State 124-117 in overtime on Tuesday as a 14 ½-point road underdog and more often than not, the masses bet what they remember last. What the public might not know is that the Kings are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games while the Wolves were 0-5 ATS prior to their upset over the Warriors.

It’s easy to fall in love with the Wolves and their young core of budding stars but this offense is very inconsistent. Prior to the effort versus Golden State, the club was held to 79, 85 and 78 points. The high total (223 ½) makes you believe we’ll see a shootout and it should be noted that Minnesota has been a solid ‘over’ bet (24-12-3, 67%) on the road this season.

                    Spurs coach faces Warriors dilemma

Gregg Popovich has the NBA by the throat this week.

He can either let his Spurs breathe and stretch their legs out in games against the Warriors, or he can choke out all the fun of what remains of the regular season by sitting out his main guys. The decision is entirely his.

Selfishly, we all want to see the Western Conference’s top heavyweights battle late Thursday and on Sunday evening, but there’s no way Popovich will allow that to happen. He’s already showed his hand against Golden State, pulling off an 87-79 win on March 19 in a dominant defensive performance where he threw caution to the wind and put his theories on how to contain Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson on full display. The victory allowed San Antonio to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it can defeat the Warriors if the teams were to meet in a series, something they haven’t done since the 2013 West semifinals, a series won 4-2 by the Spurs.

Perfect run at home worth fighting for

What we can hope for is one more clash where both teams put it all out there. From San Antonio’s standpoint, they do have something to play for on April 10 since that will be their 40th home game of the season. The Spurs have opened 39-0 at the AT&T Center, setting a single-season record, which means that wins over the Warriors and on April 12 over Oklahoma City would complete the first perfect season at home in NBA history. Of course, Popovich has already been asked about this and intimated that it means as much to him as a “cup of coffee.”

Seriously? There’s no question that the Spurs way is basically beyond reproach given the volume of success that the franchise has attained. Team goals have always been placed over individual ones, and the pursuit of a championship trumps all. While that makes sense, a perfect record at home is a team honor. In fact, it can be viewed as a reward for perhaps the best fan base in the NBA, a loyal group that has supported the Spurs religiously with a devotion few other teams enjoy. If you’ve ever been to San Antonio, that’s crystal clear. Billboards and signs remind you whose town it is at all times. Since the NFL never did make it down to the Alamodome, it’s a one-team city. The fact the team has been so remarkably effective is gravy. They would support it even if the product was mediocre.

Of course, the product is far from that, which is why Popovich shouldn’t overlook the historical aspect of what his team is on the verge of accomplishing. Because of the start the Warriors surged out to, San Antonio’s success has been largely overshadowed. The Spurs have already set a franchise-record for victories after opening 64-12. Considering all the resting Pop has done of starters, not to mention getting new franchise pillar LaMarcus Aldridge up to speed, that’s remarkable. Because the Warriors are still on the chase of the all-time wins record, San Antonio’s success has basically been ignored. Now the Spurs stand in theiway -- twice -- as Golden State needs a perfect 4-0 run to finish an NBA-record 73-9.

It’s a strange dynamic that Popovich and Warriors head coach Steve Kerr are such good friends, with the latter having played in San Antonio, winning titles in 1999 and 2003. Although Popovich has divulged that no team has kept him up trying to find ways to stop them the way Golden State has, you can take the veteran coach at his word that he wishes them no ill will. In that sense, 73 victories mean nothing to him. There’s no motivation to prevent Kerr’s Warriors from reaching that milestone. It means nothing to him.

Golden State’s own pursuit of a perfect record at home ended at the hands of Boston on Saturday night and was compounded by a second loss on Tuesday against Minnesota, so it no longer matters that the Spurs are likely to rest everyone of consequence in Oakland. Why give the Warriors any motivation, especially at home, where they already crushed the Spurs 120-90 on Jan. 25? Popovich is notorious for spoiling nationally televised games with his maintenance plans, having just done it against Oklahoma City on March 26. The Spurs lost that game 111-92 and haven’t faltered since, which means they’ve lost just three times since the All-Star break when at full strength, winning 19 times. This week’s contests should feature more rest for regulars since the Spurs will play at Utah, Golden State and Denver, places that each have unique pitfalls. The Warriors and Nuggets game come on a back-to-back, so there’s no chance San Antonio doesn’t field a depleted roster.

That brings us to April 10. The Warriors will come to town, still chasing history. The Spurs will play their 40th home game, still chasing history. Hopefully, Popovich doesn’t put on his Grinch cap, preventing one last legitimate preview of a likely Western Conference finals that is sure to be epic.

                      Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Odds to win the Heisman Trophy next December.......

5-1-- Deshaun Watson, Clemson-- Seems like he has been at Clemson forever.

6-1-- Leonard Fournette, LSU-- If only LSU had a passing threat.

6-1-- Christian McCaffery, Stanford-- Media can't wait to vote for him.

10-1-- Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma-- Still can't believe Texas Tech let him walk.

12-1-- Dalvin Cook, Florida State-- Opened at 10-1.

12-1-- Seth Russell, Baylor-- Just hope he is healthy after LY's neck injury

                      **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here......

                      13) If you see me in a sportsbook this week and you bet on an NHL game, do not sit next to me to watch it; twice in the last three nights, a guy sitting next to me lost his NHL bet when his team gave up the tying goal in the last 90 seconds, then lost in either OT or a shootout. No bueno.

                      12) Angels 4, Rangers 3-- This is why big league managers make big money and it is why they get fired. Game is tied 3-3, bottom 9th. Angels have men on 2nd and 3rd, two out and Trout is up, with Pujols up next. Do you pitch to Trout?

Texas walked Trout, Pujols crushed a ball off the wall in left-center and the Angels won. This is second time I can remember a team walking Trout to load the bases and faced Pujols with the game on the line. Both time Pujols delivered- pitch to Trout!!!

                      11) Giants 12, Dodgers 6-- LA led 4-0 in 5th inning, and it looked like they might go the whole season without giving up a run. Then the damn broke and Giants scored three in the 5th and four more in the 6th. Joe Panik, scored three, knocked in three.

                      10) Since 1985, the first round leader of The Masters has won the tournament only two times, in '08 and last year.

                      9) Ernie Els is one of the best golfers ever, but golf is hard. Els got a 9 on the first hole Thursday- he six-putted the hole. Not his finest moment. Els shot +8, an 81.

                      8) Wednesday at the Par-3 tournament, 80-year old Gary Player got a hole-in-one, fourth time he has done that at the Par-3 tournament.

                      7) Of the last ten NFL teams who traded the #1 pick in the draft, six had new GMs, who are more prone to want to stockpile picks to develop their team's depth.

                      6) North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz will be a first round pick; his QB coach with the Bison was Randy Hedberg, who played in the NFL with the '77 Buccaneers, who lost their first 12 games before finally winning the franchise's first-ever game against the Saints in the Superdome- they had been 0-26 up until then.

                      5) NFL schedule for 2016 gets released April 21 at 8:00, always an interesting thing to see, then analyze. As the old Vikings coach Bud Grant said, "It is not who you play, it is when you play them."

                      4) Orioles' Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson was in the TV booth for the NHL game in Washington last night, the Penguins-Nationals game. No idea why, just saw him up there on the big screen. I met Mr Robinson once a long time ago, just after he stopped playing, a very nice man, a real polite gentleman.

Bunch of us were watching an NFL game on TV and Brooks was there; I remember the Broncos were playing. Something weird happened in the game and he laughed, "I don't know how anyone can bet on those games." Amen.

                      3) Arizona Diamondbacks have worn four different jerseys in their first four games, the Padres three jerseys in their first three games; not sure what this accomplishes, but it doesn't help the team win. Arizona having eight sets of uniforms is just strange.

                      2) Suns 124, Rockets 115-- Gag job by Houston, losing at home to the putrid Suns. Rockets GM Daryl Morey is another one of these over-educated nitwits who doesn't think people matter, just numbers.

Accumulating talented players is not the same as building a cohesive team, it just isn't. Morey fired Kevin McHale after 11 games this year; he fired his D-League coach after the guy had two winning seasons in his only two years there. Karma is a bitch and losing to a horrendous team like Phoenix last night was payback for Morey.

                      1) Today would've been Catfish Hunter's 70th birthday; my favorite ballplayer as a kid, Hunter threw a perfect game in 1968, led the A's to three straight world titles from 1972-74, just a great clutch pitcher. He made my childhood a happier one.

Catfish knocked in three of the A's four runs in his perfect game against the Twins (Rich Reese struck out for the last out). He was also the losing pitcher in the 1967 All-Star Game, giving up a homer to Tony Perez in the 15th inning-- he was in his fifth inning on the mound. Today, his agent would've sued MLB for abusing his arm.

Catfish got revenge against Perez five years later, when Oakland beat the Reds in the 1972 World Series. Happy birthday, sir.

                        Friday's Tip Sheet
                        April 8, 2016

Wizards at Pistons – 7:35 PM EST

The clock is running out on Washington (38-40 SU, 40-38 ATS) for a shot to make the playoffs, as the Wizards sit 3 ½ games behind the Pistons with four games remaining. Washington kept it slim postseason hopes alive with a 121-103 victory over Brooklyn on Wednesday, but point guard John Wall sat out to rest an ailing knee. Wall is questionable for tonight’s contest as the Wizards have seen plenty of success against the Pistons this season by winning each of the first three matchups, including a 124-81 home blowout in their previous meeting last month.

Detroit (42-37 SU, 40-37-2 ATS) is closing in on a playoff berth after rallying past Orlando on Wednesday, 108-104 as three-point underdogs. The Pistons busted the 100-point mark for the first time in six games, while snapping a five-game streak to the ‘under.’ Stan Van Gundy’s team has won six of their last nine home contests, but scored 95 points or less in each of the last three games at the Palace of Auburn Hills. In all three meetings with the Wizards this season, the Pistons’ offense has struggled to score by posting 95, 86, and 81 points, as all three games finished ‘under’ the total.

Pacers at Raptors – 7:35 PM EST

Even though this is the final regular season meeting between Indiana and Toronto, these two teams may hook up in the opening round of the playoffs. The Raptors (52-26 SU, 42-36 ATS) will likely finish with the second seed in the East, while the Pacers sit in the seventh position heading into tonight’s action. Toronto plays with no rest after falling at Atlanta on Thursday, 95-87 as 6 ½-point underdogs, but the Raptors own a solid 7-1 SU and 6-2 ATS record since the All-Star break off a loss. The Raptors have won two of the first three matchups with the Pacers this season, including a road overtime triumph last month, 101-94.

Indiana (42-36 SU, 38-39-1 ATS) barely missed the playoffs last season after making the Eastern Conference Finals in 2014, as the Pacers are on the doorstep of returning to the postseason. The Pacers caught a break on Wednesday when the Cavaliers decided to rest LeBron James as Indiana cruised to a 123-109 victory to extend their winning streak to three. Frank Vogel’s squad has compiled a 5-8 ATS record in its last 13 games, while losing four of their last five road games to teams currently above the .500 mark.

Grizzlies at Mavericks – 8:35 PM EST

Things can change quickly in the NBA, as Dallas (40-38 SU, 43-34-1 ATS) looked to be the lone man out of the Western Conference playoff race. The Mavericks were blown out at Sacramento by 22 points on March 27, but that is the last time that Rick Carlisle’s team lost, as Dallas has run off five straight victories to pull into seventh place in the West. The style has a lot to do with Dallas’ recent success, slowing things down and playing grind-it-out games as the Mavericks have held all five opponents to 89 points or less, while not topping the 100-point mark once during this hot streak.

Memphis (42-36 SU, 41-36-1 ATS) clinched a playoff berth on Thursday after Houston was tripped up at home by Phoenix. The Grizzlies aren’t playing their best basketball of the season, but ended a six-game losing streak in Tuesday’s 108-92 victory over the Bulls as 3 ½-point home underdogs. Since upsetting Cleveland as 14 ½-point underdogs on March 7, Dave Joerger’s club has slumped to a 1-7 SU and 4-4 ATS record on the highway, as three of those ATS wins came as double-digit underdogs. After capturing the first matchup with Dallas in November, the Grizzlies have lost each of the last two meetings with the Mavericks, including a home overtime defeat in February.

Spurs at Nuggets – 9:05 PM EST

San Antonio (65-13 SU, 43-35 ATS) didn’t mail it in on national television at Golden State last night, but Gregg Popovich is resting all of his key players tonight. The Spurs fell to the Warriors, 112-101 as six-point underdogs to drop to 0-4 ATS the last four games, while slipping to 1-4 ATS in the past five road contests. Among those sitting out for San Antonio tonight include Tony Parker, Tim Duncan, Kawhi Leonard, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Manu Ginobili.

The Nuggets (32-47 SU, 40-37-2 ATS) will try to avoid the season sweep against the Spurs after losing each of the first three matchups. Denver managed a cover as 13 ½-point underdogs at San Antonio in November, but the Spurs cashed each of the last two meetings, including a 91-80 victory at the Pepsi Center right after Thanksgiving. The Nuggets have slumped down the stretch by losing five of their past six games, while losing three straight home contests since a five-game winning streak at the Pepsi Center last month.

Clippers at Jazz – 9:05 PM EST

Los Angeles (50-28 SU, 37-38-3 ATS) is locked into the fourth position in the Western Conference, coming off a sweep of the Lakers on a home-and-home set earlier this week. The Clippers will likely rest Chris Paul and DeAndre Jordan tonight as Los Angeles has won seven of its past eight games with the only loss coming at Oklahoma City with all their starters sitting out in a 119-117 defeat. Los Angeles hasn’t faced Utah since December 26, as the Clippers held off the Jazz in Salt Lake City, 109-104 as two-point road favorites.

The Jazz (39-39 SU, 40-38 ATS) are in must-win mode over the next week, holding onto a 1 ½-game advantage over the Rockets for the final playoff spot in the West. Utah has struggled against the Western Conference elite this season, posting a 1-13 record against the top four teams, coming off a heartbreaking 88-86 setback to the Spurs on Tuesday, 88-86 as 3 ½-point home underdogs. Quin Snyder’s team owns an impressive 7-2 ATS record in the last nine games with one of those defeats coming in an overtime loss to the Warriors. Since mid-March, the Jazz are riding an 11-2 mark to the ‘under’ the last 13 games, including a 5-1 ‘under’ ledger in the past six home contests.
