        • Friday's six-pack

-- Jaguars 19, Titans 13-- Jax'ville could be in first place Sunday night.

-- Warriors 124, Clippers 117-- Golden State was down 23 in second quarter.

-- I learned yesterday that pina coladas were invented in a San Juan bar; thats the kind of info they pass on during blowouts in a tournament in Puerto Rico.

-- Temple 75, Minnesota 70-- Good ballgame. Owls-Butler is good game today.

-- Iowa 89, Marquette 61-- Game was 48-21 at the half. Looks like Buzz Williams got out of Milwaukee just in time.

-- Houston Cougars more than doubled football coach Herman's salary, hoping it'll be enough to keep him in town another year. We'll see about that.

Friday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend.......

          13) I'm looking for teams that score touchdowns.........

Baltimore-Denver game in Week 1 didn't have an offensive TD by either side. NFL teams are 2-15 this season when not scoring an offensive TD, so take away that game in Denver and teams are 1-14 this season when they don't score an offensive TD, with Denver in Week 5 (@ Oakland) only winner. Scoring touchdowns is important.

          12) Packers-Vikings is for first place in the NFC North; Green Bay lost last three games after a 6-0 start. Minnesota covered its last eight games, is 7-2.

          11) Here are the 11 D-I basketball coaches who used to be head coaches in NBA:

Mike Dunlap, LMU.....Leonard Hamilton, Florida State.......Lon Kruger, Oklahoma
John Calipari, Kentucky.....Rick Pitino, Louisville......Avery Johnson, Alabama
Reggie Theus, Cal-Northridge.....Eddie Jordan, Rutgers.....Larry Brown, SMU
          Eric Musselman, Nevada........Larry Krystkowiak, Utah

          10) Oklahoma State-Baylor could be ugly if freshman QB Stitham sits out with a bad back; I'm doubting Baylor has a quality third-string QB. Oklahoma State hasn't lost yet; they play Oklahoma next week.

          9) Lot of subplots in Chicago, with former Broncos Fox/Cutler hosting Denver team giving 4th-year backup QB Osweiler his first careet start. Bears have been hot, could be headed toward contention in the Wild Card race.

          8) Good college basketball tournament in Puerto Rico; finals Sunday will have the Butler-Temple winner against the Utah-Miami winner. Either way, good game.

          7) Can't believe I'm typing this, but there are Interweb rumors that LSU might fire my man Les Miles. LSU is road dog at Ole Miss after losing to Alabama/Arkansas; would be a good game for the Mad Hatter to win.

          6) Carson Palmer once forced a trade away from the Bengals, a divorce that helped both sides; now Palmer faces Cincinnati in what could be a Super Bowl preview.

          5) North Carolina is visiting Northern Iowa Saturday, an odd bit of scheduling; UNC scored 87 ppg in winning its first three games, even without star G Paige.

          4) Ohio State-Michigan State should be a good game; not sure why Buckeyes have to play Michigan State/Michigan back-back, not great scheduling.

          3) Looks like Mark Sanchez gets the nod at QB for the Eagles, who at 4-5 are a big disappointment and have same record as the visiting Bucs, where people are happy with rookie QB Winston. Natives will be restless with Chip Kelly if he loses here.

          2) USC-Oregon should be a fun game; road side won last three series games with an average total of 90.3. Ducks gained 730 yards in last meeting. Trojans won last four games overall. LY, Vernon Adams was QB for a I-AA team; this will be interesting.

          1) If Atlanta and Jets win Sunday and they're both going up against backup QBs, the 4-6 Jacksonville Jaguars would be tied for first place in the AFC South. .

          • Preview: Kings (4-9) at Magic (6-6)

            Date: November 21, 2015 5:00 PM EDT

Even when the Orlando Magic aren't playing well offensively, their play on the other end is giving them a chance to win.

They'll aim for a seventh victory in 10 games Saturday night against the visiting Sacramento Kings.

The Magic (6-6) won 104-101 in overtime against Minnesota on Wednesday despite shooting 37.3 percent. They held the Timberwolves to 41 second-half points to force the extra period after trailing by 14 at halftime.

They've shot 39.1 percent or worse in three victories but hold opponents to 42.3 to rank among the league leaders.

Evan Fournier put Orlando ahead with a 3-pointer with 3.1 seconds left in overtime and was 5 of 7 from beyond the arc with 26 points. Fournier is averaging 19.4 points compared to 12.0 in 2014-15, the seventh-largest increase in the NBA this season.

Elfrid Payton added 24 points and six rebounds while fellow starters Victor Oladipo and Nikola Vucevic struggled. Oladipo was 0 for 6 with one point in 20 minutes after missing two games with a concussion, and Vucevic had eight points on 4-for-13 shooting.

Oladipo played seven minutes after halftime while Vucevic didn't see the floor at all over the final 29 minutes.

"I'm not trying to send messages," coach Scott Skiles said. "I mean, I get a fairly sizable check every two weeks to win games. That's what I'm trying to do. I felt like we got some good energy out of (backups)."

Orlando's bench also struggled, though, going 12 of 36 from the floor.

The Kings (4-9) showed improvement with a three-game winning streak but have since dropped back-to-back games at Atlanta and Miami.

DeMarcus Cousins will be back after serving a one-game suspension in Thursday's 116-109 loss to the Heat after his forearm shot to the head of Atlanta's Al Horford in Wednesday's defeat.

Sacramento fell to 0-5 without its All-Star big man, who is averaging 27.5 points and 11.1 rebounds. Rudy Gay also didn't return after suffering a shoulder injury on a drive to the basket in the third quarter, though he's expected to play.

"Our two superstars were out but guys stepped up when needed," Rajon Rondo said. "We were able to make a run at it but we weren't able to continue to get enough stops."

Rondo had 18 assists, 14 points and nine rebounds, narrowly missing a fifth triple-double in seven games.

"He's playing like Rondo," Miami's Dwyane Wade said. "As a fan of the game, I'm just happy to see him healthy and when he's healthy he's one of the top point guards in this league. He's back to proving that."

The Kings continue this five-game trip having gone 0-4 on the road after not taking much advantage of an early home-heavy schedule.

Orlando shot 53.6 percent while winning both of last season's meetings. Oladipo played one of his best games as a pro in a 119-114 victory March 6, scoring 32 on 14-of-24 shooting with 10 assists.

              • Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Some college football trends to ponder for today's games........

-- Michigan State is 11-3 vs spread in last 14 games as an underdog.

-- Oklahoma won/covered last five games, scoring 55.2 ppg.

-- Average total in last three USC-Oregon games is 90.3.

-- 10-0 Houston won last two games by combined total of four points.

-- K-State won seven games in row vs Iowa State, winning last four played in Little Apple by average score of 35-18.

-- Iowa is 10-0, but is 0-4 vs spread as Big 14 home favorite this year.

                **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud......

                13) If you enjoy pro football and want to learn more about it, read this piece about how Carson Palmer prepared for a game against the Browns last month.

Interesting stuff about how NFL teams prepare for a game.

                12) If you didn't use the link or it didn't work, article tells how Carson Palmer had to learn 171 plays (plus formations/blocking schemes) in five days in preparation for the Cardinals' game in Cleveland. Interesting look behind the scenes.

                11) Miami 90, Utah 66-- Miami-Butler is good title game in Puerto Rico Sunday.

                10) Movie stuff: They're coming out with a new movie about Texas Longhorns called My All American- actor who plays coach Darrell Royal looked familiar to me, so I had to look him up. Guy's name is Aaron Eckhart-- turns out he played the assistant coach for the Sharks in Any Given Sunday, the movie where Al Pacino was coach, Cameron Diaz was the team's owner and Barry Switzer the TV announcer.

                9) Hofstra 82, Florida State 77-- Hofstra dressed nine guys; three of them fouled out, a 4th guy had four fouls, but they made 10-22 from arc and held off Seminoles team that was 0-10 from arc in first half. Joe Mihalich is a very good coach.

                8) Cavaliers' center Timofey Mozgov (deltoid injury) is out for next 10-14 days. he is a good player the Knicks stupidly traded in the Carmelo Anthony deal.

                7) Knicks 93, Thunder 90-- That said, Phil Jackson has done good job re-building the Knicks. Not many people thought he would do it- still a ways to go, but they're fun to watch and should make the playoffs at least.

                6) Tex-Arlington 73, Ohio State 68-- Thought this was a woman's score first time I saw it, but it was not; Buckeyes were 13-27 on foul line, got outrebounded by nine on a bad night for the Big 14 (Michigan lost to Xavier, Northwestern needed OT to beat Columbia of the Ivy League) and Duquesne beat Penn State by 26.

                5) Cameron Maybin had a nice year for the Braves LY, his reward was getting dealt back to his original team the Tigers Friday, and Atlanta didn't get much for him. One of the fascinating things about baseball is how different people see the same things but draw different conclusions from them.

When Detroit got rid of Maybin ten years ago, he was part of the package that brought Miguel Cabrera to Motown, pretty good deal for the Tigers.

                4) Rumors have Giants competing with the Dodgers for Zack Greinke's services in the free agent market; either that, or they're just trying to drive the price up, though the Dodgers seem to have an unlimited budget- they were paying $88M LY to guys who weren't even on their team.

                3) A's signed 35-year old Rich Hill to a $6M contract for next year; Hill made zero big league starts from 2010-14, then started four games for Boston in September and went 2-1, 1.55, which paid off with a $6M deal from my favorite team. Oy.

                2) Air Force 37, Boise State 30-- First time since 1993 Boise State lost home games on consecutive weekends.

                1) Raptors beat Lakers last night, but Toronto center Jonas Valanciunas broke his hand and will miss some time......Golden State beat the Bulls; not sure if they're ever going to lose a game.

                              6) Broncos +1 (404)-- Osweiler getting first NFL start in his fourth year.

                              5) Vikings -1 (409)-- Minnesota covered its last eight games.

                              4) Bengals +5 (410)-- Long trip on short week after first loss.

                              3) Packers +1 (414)-- Lot of opinions on this game, both ways.

                              2) Jets -2 (514)-- Fitzpatrick had left thumb operated on nine days ago.

                              1) Cowboys even (515)-- As you can tell, Romo is back at QB.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday.......

                              13) Michigan State 17, Ohio State 14-- When was last time Buckeyes had five first downs in an entire game? Spartans held Ohio State to 132 yards on 45 plays; they've beaten Michigan/Ohio State without leading at any time before the last play. After the game, rats started jumping off the Ohio State ship (see quote above).

                              12) Baylor 45, Oklahoma State 35-- Bears hadn't won in Stillwater since 1939, but they were the dominant team in this game; It is interesting how a guy like RGIII was such a great player at Baylor but when he goes to the pros, he is useless; is Art Briles that great a coach that he puts his players in a position to win better than the coaches in the NFL? When the #3 QB comes in and looks like Dan Fouts......

                              11) Ole Miss 38, LSU 17-- Wheels have fallen off for the Tigers, who lost last three games and looked totally disorganized at times in this game- they've got 40 guys in the NFL, most of any school-- as a result are very, very young in some spots, their main weakness is at QB. How that kid still plays is beyond me; he isn't good.

                              10) Oregon 48, USC 28-- Vernon Adams threw six TDs, had five incompletions; that is usually a good sign you're going to win- they averaged over 16 ypa, while Trojans had 12 penalties for 124 yards.

                              9) North Carolina 30, Virginia Tech 27 OT-- When Tar Heels lost their opener to South Carolina, who would've thought UNC wouldn't lose again while Spurrier would not finish season? This was an emotional day in Blacksburg, Frank Beamer's last game at Virginia Tech after 29 years.

                              8) Northern Iowa 71, North Carolina 67-- Tar Heels' basketball team has a tradition of playing a road game near home of their older players- this game was for Marcus Paige, but he is hurt and hasn't played yet, which cost them here. Good win for MVC and for anyone who beats Northern Iowa this season, as far as power ratings go.

                              7) Some other basketball doings Saturday:
Davidson 82, Charleston 81-- Rick Barry's son Canyon had 31 for Charleston, is averaging 28 ppg.......Little Rock 49, San Diego State 43-- Ugly offense for Aztecs.

                              6) Northwestern 13, Wisconsin 7-- Not often a team is -5 in turnovers, goes 2-13 on third down and only loses 13-7. This game was so bad that Badger fans were throwing snowballs at the Wisconsin cheerleaders in the second half.

                              5) UConn 20, Houston 17-- Cougars raised their coach's salary 250% this week and then promptly lost for first time. Still amazes me that UConn and Houston are in the same league-- thats an NFL-length road trip for a game.

                              4) As for the SEC, why on God's green earth do they play I-AA teams? Alabama should be embarrassed to play a I-AA team, it is ripping off fans who pay to go to the games and it makes zero sense. Then South Carolina loses to The Citadel- no bueno.

Florida 20, Florida Atlantic 14 OT
Georgia 23, Georgia Southern 17 OT-- Whichever league is best is cyclical, lot of it depends on which teams don't lose guys early to the NFL, but I don't want to hear boo about how great the SEC is this year, because it isn't.

Their games are still lot of fun to watch on TV, but the quality of the QBs in the SEC stinks except for Prescott, Kelly and the kid at Arkansas. Going OT with teams from the Sun Belt and C-USA is embarrassing, though not nearly as bad as losing to I-AA Citadel, like South Carolina did.

                              3) Kansas State 38, Iowa State 35-- Cyclones had the ball and 35-28 lead with 1:31 left and K-State was down to one timeout. Any idiot knows you take a knee three times, punt the ball with less than 0:20 left and go home happy, but no, they run the ball and fumble. K-State ties the game, kicks off and Iowa State fumbles again. Oy.

I'm not a big "fire the coach" guy, but Paul Rhoads deserves to get the ziggy after this horrendous exhibition of coaching malpractice.

                              2) South Florida 65, Cincinnati 27-- Imagine betting on Cincinnati, laying 2.5 points and watching them trail 51-3 at the half? Tommy Tuberville expressed interest in the vacant Miami job; I'm guessing this will get his name scratched off that list.

                              1) Mississippi State 51, Arkansas 50-- Razorbacks scored 50+ points in three of last five games, didn't win any of them in regulation- they won twice in OT.
