      STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

      STREAKING

Patrick Corbin, Washington Nationals (8-5, 3.25 ERA, $227):
The southpaw has been a huge reason for Washington's mid-season surge with the Nats going 6-1 in his last seven starts. During that span, Corbin is 3-0 with a 1.60 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 57 strikeouts in 45 innings of work.

The Nationals begin their three-game home set against the Braves with Corbin on the mound. In his only game against Atlanta this season, Corbin allowed two runs through five innings but the Nats lost 4-3.

Coincidently enough, his Braves pitching counterpart today, Dallas Keuchel gave up three runs through five innings in his only game this year against Washington and Atlanta lost by an identical 4-3 score. Washington has gone 14-6 in their last 20 home games and are -150 faves to pull off the win tonight.

      SLUMPING

Jordan Zimmerman, Detroit Tigers (0-8, 7.57 ERA, $-551):
Zimmerman, and the Tigers, have been pretty much slumping all season but he's somehow managed to pitch even worse recently. In his last four starts the right-hander has an ERA of 14.09 and a WHIP of 2.67.

Zimmerman and the Tigers are +208 underdogs on the road today against the Los Angeles Angels. The Angels will start Jaime Barria who is 4-3 with a 6.63 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and batting average allowed of .299. But even those ugly numbers look better than Zimmerman's 1.71 WHIP and BAA of .328.

      3 STRIKES

      BOUNCING BACK

After a terrific start to his career, Padres right-hander Chris Paddack looked like he hit the rookie wall near the beginning of June when he recorded an ERA of 7.54 while giving up six dingers over a three-game stretch. But he's recovered nicely with a 2.15 ERA and 0.82 WHIP over his last five starts. Tonight, the Padres will host the Baltimore Orioles in an interleague matchup.

The Orioles are really bad, even against other bad teams, going just 15-48 in their last 63 games against teams with a losing record. They have yet to announce their starter for tonight's game but they will most likely be big underdogs versus the Padres and Paddack.

      GIVING THEM A FIGHTING CHANCE

The Marlins average a National League-worst 3.56 runs per game but Caleb Smith has been giving them a fighting chance when he takes the mound. The lefty is 6-4 with a 3.30 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 110 Ks in 90 innings. Miami is 4-0 in his last four starts and is in a pick 'em at home today against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The D-Backs will start Merrill Kelly who got shelled for seven runs and three homers in just over two innings against Baltimore during his last start.

      CHARLIE AND THE HITTING FACTORY

Almost every batter loves hitting at Coors Field but Rockies right fielder Charlie Blackmon is especially fond of his home field. Blackmon has a batting average of .415 with 16 homers and an insane OPS of 1.318 in 38 games at home this season.

Blackmon has a BA of .400 over his last eight games and will face Dodgers pitcher Kenta Maeda today. Maeda has struggled both on the road (5.23 ERA in 11 away starts) and against left-handed hitters, giving up an OPS of .797 (compared to a .509 OPS against righties).

Blackmon averages 3.66 total bases per game at home and the O/U for his total bases tonight is set at 1.5 with the Over paying out at -150. He is +270 to mash a home run.

      • Nationals beat Braves 6-3, tighten NL East race
        July 29, 2019
        By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) Anthony Rendon hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the sixth inning, and the Washington Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves 6-3 on Monday night in the opener of a three-game series to close within 4+ games of the NL East leader.

With the score 2-2, Rendon connected of Chad Sobotka for his 23rd home run this season and third career slam, raising his career RBIs total to 500. Rendon had two hits.

Patrick Corbin (9-5) allowed two runs and five hits in six innings, striking out eight and walking one. Sean Doolittle gave up a home run to pinch-hitter Charlie Culberson in the ninth.

Dallas Keuchel (3-4) gave up four runs, six hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings in his eighth start for the Braves.

Juan Soto hit an RBI single in the first and Trea Turner had an RBI double in the second. The 20-year-old Soto also made a leaping catch at the left-field wall in the sixth to deny Adam Duvall a possible two-run homer.

Josh Donaldson singled off the glove of second baseman Brian Dozier in the sixth for his 1,000th hit.

        ROCKIES 9, DODGERS 1

DENVER (AP) - Jon Gray allowed three hits over eight innings to win for the first time in a month, and Colorado beat Los Angeles for its third win in 11 games this season against the NL champions.

Nolan Arenado had a two-run single in a five-run fifth inning, David Dahl hit a two-run homer in the eighth, and Ian Desmond finished a home run short of the cycle.

Gray (10-7) allowed one run, struck out six and walked three. Wade Davis finished the four-hitter.

Kenta Maeda (7-8) allowed six runs and seven hits in four-plus innings for the Dodgers.

        REDS 11, PIRATES 6

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jose Iglesias' grand slam completed Cincinnati's 10-run second inning in a win over Pittsburgh.

Before the game, the Pirates traded scheduled starter Jordan Lyles to the Brewers.

The last-place Pirates lost their ninth straight, their longest skid since they dropped 10 in a row in 2011.

The Reds piled up six hits and three walks while sending 13 batters to the plate. Joey Votto singled home a pair of runs, first baseman Josh Bell had a throwing error, and Iglesias' second career grand slam off Montana DuRapau made it 10-1. Every Reds player scored in the inning.

Sonny Gray (6-6) gave up four runs in 5 1/3 innings, including Starling Marte's 18th homer and Bryan Reynolds' ninth. Colin Moran hit his third career grand slam off Wandy Peralta.

        MARLINS 11, DIAMONDBACKS 6

MIAMI (AP) - Caleb Smith endured a bad stretch after a baserunning adventure and recovered to pitch seven innings as Miami beat Arizona.

Smith laid down a bunt in the second inning and wound up at third base thanks to two errors on the play. The jaunt may have taken a toll, because in the next inning he gave up three hits, including a three-run homer by Ketel Marte.

Smith (7-4) allowed only one other run, struck out nine and retired his final 10 batters.

The Marlins, who won three of four games from Arizona, improved to 10-9-1 in their past 20 series. They started the year 1-10-3.

Miami's Miguel Rojas homered for the third game in a row, increasing his season total to four. Teammate Brian Anderson added his 15th homer. Both homers came off Merrill Kelly (7-11), who allowed seven runs in six innings. He has lost his past five decisions, and his ERA has climbed to 4.52.

Carson Kelly hit his 13th homer for Arizona.

        BLUE JAYS 7, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Cavan Biggio hit the go-ahead homer in the eighth inning, Randal Grichuk and Teoscar Hernandez also went deep, and Toronto rallied past Kansas City.

Top prospect Bo Bichette singled in the first at-bat of his big league career, and the Blue Jays got a strong spot start from Thomas Pannone in the opener of a 10-game trip.

Tim Mayza (1-1) earned the victory with a scoreless inning of relief.

Brad Keller (7-10) let just three balls out of the infield until Hernandez's tying home run in the fifth inning. He went on to allow three homers in a game for the first time in his career, and four runs total in seven-plus innings.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

            13) NFL teams whose backup QB’s have never started a NFL game:
            Cowboys, Jaguars, Giants, Steelers.

            12) NFL backup QB’s who started the most NFL games:
            126— Ryan Fitzpatrick, Miami
            92— Matt Schaub, Atlanta
            88— Ryan Tannehill, Tennessee
            73— Blake Bortles, LA Rams

            11) Most profitable NFL head coaches in preseason games:

            8) Joe Flacco won’t be playing QB for Denver Thursday in the Hall of Fame Game; Kevin Hogan will start, followed by rookie Drew Lock and then Brett Rypien.

            7) Josh Johnson turned down a chance to go to Ravens’ camp as a backup QB; he figures Robert Griffin III will be healthy shortly after the regular season begins, which would mean Johnson getting cut at that point.

32-year old Johnson has had shots with 12 different NFL teams, going 1-7 as a starter— he’s played in 33 NFL games, starting three for the Redskins LY.

            5) College basketball transfer portal:
            — Utah F Donnie Tillman transfers from Utah to UNLV, is immediately eligible.

            4) Last major league to score 10+ runs in an inning and still lose the game; Royals against Cleveland in August, 2006.

            3) Former Clemson RB Tavien Feaster is transferring to South Carolina, where he’ll be eligible right away; he has 1,330 career rushing yards and 15 TD’s..

            2) Former Southern Miss/Tennessee coach Donnie Tyndall is the new head coach of the Grand Rapids Drive in the G-League.

            1) I’d advise against wagering on preseason football, but if you must, six of last seven Hall of Fame games stayed under the total.

            • LEADING OFF: Thor throws as deadline nears, Rays vs Red Sox
              July 29, 2019
              By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Tuesday:

              STILL A MET (FOR NOW)

Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard (7-5, 4.33) is set to start against the White Sox, and it could be his final appearance with the club. The hard-throwing 26-year-old changed his bio on Twitter over the weekend to read ''Pitcher for the New York Mets, for now,'' and he also tweeted a meme of Thor actor Chris Hemsworth with the text ''I have no idea what's going on.'' First-year general manager Brodie Van Wagenen has been busy ahead of Wednesday's trade deadline, acquiring right-hander Marcus Stroman from Toronto and dealing left-hander Jason Vargas to Philadelphia. It's unclear if the club plans to send away more pieces or make a long-odds push for an NL wild card.

              EAST ENEMIES

David Price (7-4, 3.66) gets the ball for Boston in the opener of a three-game series against Charlie Morton (12-3, 2.60) and Tampa Bay at Fenway Park. The Red Sox took two of three from the Rays last week and have pulled within a half-game of Tampa Bay for second place in the AL East. Neither team currently holds a postseason spot, with the Yankees pacing the division by 8 1/2 games and the Rays a half-game behind Oakland for the second AL wild card.

              ASTRO OUT

Astros outfielder Jake Marisnick will begin to serve his two-game suspension after Major League Baseball upheld the ban for his violent home plate collision with Angels catcher Jonathan Lucroy. Marisnick had appealed the penalty for the play that occurred July 7. Lucroy suffered a concussion and a broken nose. Chief Baseball Officer Joe Torre said he didn't believe Marisnick intended to injure Lucroy, but Marisnick's actions warranted discipline because they violated MLB rules designed to protect catchers. Marisnick will serve the suspension during games against Cleveland.

              REASON TO SMILE?

Drew Smyly (0-0, 1.50) makes his second start for the Phillies after being cut last month by Texas. The left-hander shut down Pittsburgh in his Philadelphia debut, pitching six innings of one-run ball. He'll get a tougher test in the red-hot Giants, who have won 12 of 15 to bust into the NL wild card race. Tyler Beede (3-4, 4.85) is set to pitch for San Francisco.

                              STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                              STREAKING

Julio Teheran, Atlanta Braves (5-7, 3.42 ERA, $582):
The Braves are doing their best to hold off the challengers in the NL East and Teheran’s month of July is a big part of that. The right-hander has been fantastic this month, with a 1.14ERA and a 0.89 WHIP, while limiting opponents to .188 batting average over that span. Teheran makes one final start this month against the second-place Nationals tonight in Washington. This game is basically a Pick’em with a total of 10.5.

                              SLUMPING

Griffin Canning, Los Angeles Angels (3-6, 5.15 ERA, $176):
It’s been an up-and-down rookie season for the Angels’ young starter and unfortunately this is a down section. Canning has a 12.34 ERA and a 2.49 WHIP in his last four games (three starts), while opponents have a 1.009 OPS over that span. Canning will have a chance to bounce back when he and the Angels host the Tigers tonight. L.A. is currently a big -260 home favorite with a total of 9.5.

                              BIEBER FEVER

It’s time to check your temperature, one of our favorite MLB trends of the season returns today as Shane Bieber takes the ball as the Indians host the Astros tonight. Yup, Bieber Fever is back! The Under first five innings is 16-4-1 in Bieber’s last 21 starts and in nine of his last 10 starts, he has allowed two runs or less through five innings, blanking opponents four times in that span. The total for tonight’s matchup (against Verlander) is a nice 4.5. Jump on that now and get a case of Bieber Fever.

CLEVELAND (AP) Justin Verlander struck out 13 to reach double figures for the third straight start and sixth time this season, leading the Houston Astros over the Cleveland Indians 2-0 on Tuesday night.

Verlander (14-4) outpitched Shane Bieber and won his fourth consecutive start, tying Washington's Stephen Strasburg for the major league lead in wins. Verlander allowed two hits in seven innings and walked none.

He allowed one runner to reach second. Cleveland's only hits were singles by Roberto Perez leading off the third and Greg Allen starting the sixth.

Cleveland struck out 15 times. Will Harris fanned two in a perfect eighth and Roberto Osuna followed with a 1-2-3 ninth for his 24th save in 28 chances.

                                PIRATES 11, REDS 4

CINCINNATI (AP) - Reds reliever Amir Garrett rushed the Pirates' dugout and threw punches in the ninth inning, starting a brawl prolonged by Cincinnati outfielder Yasiel Puig, and Pittsburgh ended its longest losing streak in eight years

Reds manager David Bell ran onto the field to join the fracas after being ejected an inning earlier. In all, five Reds were ejected.

The dust-up was sparked when Pittsburgh's Keone Kela threw up-and-in to Derek Dietrich in the seventh. After the inning, first baseman Joey Votto walked toward the Pirates dugout and exchanged words with Kela.

The ejections started in the eighth, when Josh Bell was tossed for arguing a strike call. Reds reliever Jared Hughes was ejected in the ninth for hitting Starling Marte.

The Pirates ended a nine-game losing streak behind Corey Dickerson, who drove in a career-high five runs with a pair of homers and a single.

Bell doubled home a pair of runs in the first inning, giving him an NL-leading 88 RBIs. Dickerson singled home two more in the third, and connected on a two-run shot and solo homer.

Joe Musgrove (8-9) set a career high with his eighth win.

Tanner Roark (6-7) lasted only 3 1/3 innings and gave up five runs.

                                RAYS 6, RED SOX 5

BOSTON (AP) - Avisail Garcia homered and added the go-ahead, two-run double in the sixth inning in Tampa Bay's win over Boston.

Travis d'Arnaud and Garcia homered to give the Rays a 4-3 lead in the fifth and help chase David Price.

                                Andrew Benintendi homered for Boston.

Adam Kolarek (4-3) earned the win. Josh Taylor (0-1) took the loss.

Emilio Pagan, Tampa's seventh pitcher, picked up his eighth save.

                                DIAMONDBACKS 4, YANKEES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Rookie Taylor Clarke was an impressive winner in his Yankee Stadium debut, and Arizona got home runs from Christian Walker and Carson Kelly to beat New York.

Nick Ahmed hit an RBI single and Adam Jones had an early sacrifice fly for the Diamondbacks.

J.A. Happ (8-6) allowed three runs in six innings for a struggling New York staff.

Edwin Encarnacion had an RBI double and Tyler Wade hit his second major league homer for the Yankees.

Clarke (4-3) did not permit an earned run over 5 1/3 innings of three-hit ball in his 12th big league start. He struck out six and walked two to win his third decision in a row. Archie Bradley got four straight outs for his fifth career save and first since June 18 last year.

                                DODGERS 9, ROCKIES 4

DENVER (AP) - Kristopher Negron homered in his first at-bat with Los Angeles, one of four home runs in a win over Colorado.

A.J. Pollock, Russell Martin and Justin Turner also went deep for Los Angeles. The Dodgers became the first team in the majors to reach 70 wins and increased their lead in the NL West to 15 games over San Francisco.

Rockies starter Kyle Freeland (2-9) struggled again. Colorado fell to 6-18 in July and has lost 24 of 34 since late June to fall eight games below .500.

Colorado got RBI doubles by Nolan Arenado, Ian Desmond and Garrett Hampson, and a run-scoring single by Daniel Murphy.

Casey Sadler (1-0) tossed 2 1/3 innings in relief of Julio Urias to get the win.

                                CARDINALS 2, CUBS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Paul Goldschmidt homered for the seventh time in eight games, a go-ahead drive off Yu Darvish in the sixth inning that lifted St. Louis into sole possession of the NL Central lead.

Goldschmidt hit a fastball from Darvish (3-5) to center for his 25th home run this season.

St. Louis (57-49) dropped out of first place on May 7 but has held at least a share of the lead since Thursday and moved one game ahead of the Cubs (56-50).

Giovanny Gallegos (3-1) earned the win in relief of Adam Wainwright, who allowed one run and five hits in 5 2/3 innings.

                                PHILLIES 4, GIANTS 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Drew Smyly tossed seven shutout innings and Rhys Hoskins homered to lead Philadelphia over San Francisco.

The Giants had won 12 of 15 and 19 of 24 to jump back into the playoff picture, but couldn't solve Smyly (2-5) in his second start for the Phillies.

Smyly scattered four hits and struck out five, helping send the Giants to their seventh straight loss in Philadelphia. Hector Neris picked up his 19th save.

San Francisco got pinch-hit homers from Brandon Belt and Stephen Vogt in the eighth.

The Phillies scored twice off Giants starter Tyler Beede (3-5) in the fourth inning and then chased him after with two more runs in the fifth. Beede walked Bryce Harper, and Hoskins followed with a shot to center for his 23rd homer of the year and a 4-0 lead.

                                ORIOLES 8, PADRES 5

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Chris Davis hit a go-ahead home run in the eighth inning to snap an 0-for-18 slump, and Baltimore rallied from a four-run deficit.

Davis connected off Matt Strahm (4-8) with one out in the eighth for just his eighth home run this season.
