        • MLB Betting trends: best pitchers to ride on the road and bet against at home
          Rohit Ponnaiya

Atlanta Braves rookie Mike Soroka has been one of the best pitchers in the majors on the road but has had some uneven performances at home.

While pitchers generally pitch better at home than away, some starters buck that trend and actually throw much better on the road. And we're not just talking about Rockies pitchers here. Knowing which starters travel well but crash at home can give you additional insight on what team to wager on and how to bet totals.

There is the second part of our series (see Wed. Trends and Indexes for Part 1) of articles that digs into home and away splits for starting pitchers so you can beat the MLB odds.

Here are the starters who have an ERA below 4.00 on the road, with an ERA more than two runs higher at home. Listed in order of best ERA in away starts.

          Tyler Glasnow, Tampa Bay Rays

          Home: 2-1, 3.18 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, .250 BAA
          Away: 4-0, 0.70 ERA, 0.66 WHIP, .157 BAA

Unfortunately for Glasnow and the Rays it looks he might not return to duty until towards the end of August after being completely shut down for three weeks with flexor inflammation. But for the final month of the regular season he could be a great starter to back on the road.

          Mike Soroka, Atlanta Braves

          Home: 4-1, 3.28 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, .252 BAA
          Away: 4-0, 1.05 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, .154 BAA

The 21-year-old phenom has been terrific away from Atlanta but has played four of his seven road games against some of the worst hitting teams in the majors such as Cincinnati, San Francisco and Miami.

          Trevor Bauer, Cleveland Indians

          Home: 2-4, 4.96 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, .218 BAA
          Away: 4-2, 2.04 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, .189 BAA

Bauer's three worst starts of the season all happened at Progressive Field, and while the Twins hit very well on the road, giving up a total of 12 runs in nine innings versus Baltimore and Detroit is alarming.

          Marco Gonzales, Seattle Mariners

          Home: 4-4. 6.00 ERA, 1.52 WHIP .303 BAA
          Away: 5-2, 2.85 ERA, 1.25 WHIP .255 BAA

This is a bit surprising given how pitcher-friendly T-Mobile Park is but Gonzales has been just awful at home this season.

          German Marquez, Colorado Rockies

          Home: 4-1, 5.70 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, .314 BAA
          Away: 4-2, 3.06 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, .201 BAA

This one is not a surprise. Coors Field can be a nightmare for pitchers and Marquez's home/away BAA splits are massive.

          Trevor Williams, Pittsburgh Pirates

          Home: 0-1, 6.00 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, .283 BAA
          Away: 2-1, 3.24 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, .256 BAA

Don't let that record fool you, Williams has started four games on the road and seven at home so there is a decent sample size to analyze. For whatever reason Williams has not thrown well at pitcher-friendly PNC Park, with poor performances versus Cincinnati, Oakland and most recently Detroit.

          Jose Urena, Miami Marlins

          Home: 1-5, 6.14 ERA, 1.69 WHIP, .340 BAA
          Away: 3-2, 3.32 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, .230 BAA

Urena is another pitcher on this list who is expected to be out a while. The right-hander was transferred to the 60-day IL a couple weeks ago but when he returns could be sneaky road play.

          Yu Darvish, Chicago Cubs

          Home: 0-3, 6.23 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, .249 BAA
          Away: 2-1, 3.59 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, .191 BAA

Darvish is awful at Wrigley Field but his control is awful everywhere, walking 4.9 batters per nine innings at home and on the road.

          Matt Harvey, Los Angeles Angels

          Home: 1-3, 10.46 ERA, 1.80 WHIP, .327 BAA
          Away: 1-1, 3.80 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, .205 BAA

Harvey is another injured starter who pitches OK on the road and absolutely awful at home. He's expected to return soon after the All-Star break. It's worth mentioning that he's had the difficult task of facing the Twins, Yankees and Astros in his home starts.

          Antonio Senzatela, Colorado Rockies

          Home: 2-3, 6.21 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, .299 BAA
          Away: 4-2, 3.92 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, .276 BAA

Senzatela certainly isn't good on the road but he definitely puts up better numbers than at Coors Field.

          J.A. Happ, New York Yankees

          Home: 4-4, 6.29 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, .300 BAA
          Away: 3-0, 4.05 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, .230 BAA

Happ doesn't technically fit on this list because his road ERA is just above 4.00 but I felt like I just had to include him. He's unbeaten on the road and has given up multiple homers in four of his last six starts at home.

                      STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                      STREAKING

Homer Bailey, Kansas City Royals (7-6, 4.61 ERA, $193):
We can’t remember a time we were more excited to write up a streaking starter. Yes, our boy Homer is officially our streaking starter in Line Drive. And for good reason. Bailey has a 0.47 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP over his last three starts. And he has some good value against a Blue Jays team that is one of the worst hitting lineups in baseball. The Royals are +165 road dogs with a total of 9.

                      SLUMPING

Steven Matz, New York Mets (5-6, 4.85 ERA, $219):
The Mets off the field issues are one thing, but one thing this team was supposed to be able to rely on was starting pitching, Matz included. The southpaw is slumping right now, pitching to an 8.80 ERA and a 1.83 WHIP, including a whopping six dingers over his last three starts. Matz and the Mets are currently slight +100 home dogs with a total of 10.

                      • Yankees outslug Red Sox 17-13 in MLB's 1st game in Europe
                        June 29, 2019
                        By The Associated Press

LONDON (AP) Brett Gardner hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the third inning, Aaron Judge went deep to cap a six-run fourth and the New York Yankees outslugged the Boston Red Sox 17-13 on Saturday night in the first Major League Baseball game played in Europe.

Each team scored six runs in a first inning that stretched nearly an hour.

Aaron Hicks hit the first European homer, DJ LeMahieu had four hits and five RBIs as New York opened a 17-6 lead and Luke Voit had four hits, including three doubles, before leaving with an injury in the fifth inning.

Rookie Michael Chavis hit a pair of three-run homers for Boston and Jackie Bradley Jr. had four hits, also going deep.

Boston starter Rick Porcello and New York's Masahiro Tanaka both failed to finish the first inning.

Chad Green (2-2) allowed four hits in two scoreless innings. Steven Wright (0-1) lost in his first decision and second appearance since an 80-game suspension for a positive drug test.

                        ROCKIES 5, DODGERS 3

DENVER (AP) - Jon Gray pitched effectively into the seventh inning and Charlie Blackmon homered to lead Colorado past Los Angeles.

Gray (9-5) allowed three runs, two earned, and struck out eight over 6 2/3 innings. He outdueled Los Angeles lefty Clayton Kershaw (7-2), who gave up five runs, four earned, struck out seven and didn't walk a batter.

Alex Verdugo had two hits and Edwin Rios got his first major league hit and drove in a run for the Dodgers.

Scuffling closer Wade Davis got three outs for his 12th save in 14 chances.

                        BRAVES 5, METS 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Nick Markakis and Austin Riley hit consecutive solo homers to give Atlanta the lead in the eighth inning, and the Braves spoiled the New York's celebration of the 1969 World Series champion Mets.

Braves closer Luke Jackson stranded runners at second and third in the ninth for his 13th save, handing New York its seventh straight loss.

Sean Newcomb (2-0) tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Jackson worked around an error by first baseman Freddie Freeman and a walk, ending it by striking out Dominic Smith on three pitches.

Ronald Acuna Jr. and Dansby Swanson each had three hits for NL East-leading Atlanta.

Struggling reliever Seth Lugo (3-2) worked 1 2/3 innings and allowed four hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts.

                        ORIOLES 13, INDIANS 0

BALTIMORE (AP) - Andrew Cashner threw seven innings of three-hit ball, Renato Nunez had two of Baltimore's four home runs and the Orioles clinched their first series win since April.

Anthony Santander hit the 100th home run, and 45th by an Oriole, to land on Eutaw Street since the stadium opened on April 6, 1992.

Chance Sisco also homered for Baltimore, which has outscored Cleveland 26-0 over the first two games. The Orioles will go for their first three-game sweep of the season Sunday.

Cashner (8-3) was scratched moments before the first pitch as thunderstorms passed through the area. When the start of the game was announced for 5:10 p.m. -- an hour and six minutes delay -- Cashner was renamed the starter. He finished with six strikeouts and one walk.

The Orioles earned back-to-back shutouts for the first time since June 28, 2015, also against Cleveland in a doubleheader.

Trey Mancini had three hits and drove in three runs for the Orioles. Nunez tied a career-high with four RBIs.

McKay (1-0) didn't allow a baserunner until Danny Santana flared an opposite-field single to right with one out in the sixth. The lefty allowed one hit, a walk and struck out three in six innings. Three relievers completed a five-hitter.

Cruz hit a pair of two-run homers, connecting against Ivan Nova (3-7) in the first and launching a 469-foot shot off Jose Ruiz in the ninth. That gave him three multihomer games this season and 30 in his career. He also doubled and singled.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Brett Anderson pitched 7 2/3 dominant innings of two-hit ball, and Matt Chapman hit a two-run homer in Oakland's victory over Los Angeles.

Anderson (8-5) didn't allow an Angels runner to reach second base until Luis Rengifo's eighth-inning double chased him on his 100th pitch.

Marcus Semien and Josh Phegley drove in runs for the A's, who have won four of five and 12 of 17 overall to push past the Angels in the middle of the AL West pack. Oakland has won 16 of its last 21 road games, as well.

Mike Trout went 1 for 3 with a walk and a ninth-inning single, and Shohei Ohtani went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts as Los Angeles was shut out for the first time since April 16, failing to get any runners to third base.

Machado and Reyes homered on consecutive pitches from rookie Dakota Hudson (6-4) in a seven-run second, when only one of the runs was earned due to the right-hander's throwing error.

Paddack (5-4) threw six brilliant innings to win for the first time in five starts dating to May 20. He allowed a leadoff home run to rookie Tommy Edman on his fourth pitch, but then allowed only a single the rest of the way. He struck out eight and walked one.

                            Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……..

                            13) Today is June 30 but we’re going to hear a lot of stuff about the NBA starting tonight, with free agency starting. NBA’s offseason is often more interesting than the season itself.

                            12) New York 17, Boston 13— Game was 6-6 after the first inning with neither pitcher getting three outs; this game looked more like beer league softball than major league baseball.

                            11) At 2:13 Saturday afternoon, after the 6-6 first inning, Dave Cokin posted on Twitter that in live betting, the total on the New York-Boston game was 23.5 (+$130). It went way over that.

                            10) Lot of college basketball coaches are over in Greece for the FIBA u19 World Cup, where there are six uncommitted American 5-star prospects playing, as well as several prospects from Canada and Puerto Rico- the tournament runs thru July 7th.

                            9) Mets’ manager Mickey Callaway makes $850,000 to manage the Mets, and in reality, he is just a button-pusher who is ordered around by the team’s GM. Not a lot of cash for a manager, and in a big market at that.

What I’m suggesting is that being the Indians’ pitching coach might be a better job than managing the Mets, seeing how the Indians’ pitching coach probably makes around $250,000 with a hell of a lot less stress and a lot more job security than Callaway has now, and he actually gets to coach the pitchers.

                            8) Orioles 13, Indians 0— Over last two days, Baltimore outscored the Tribe 26-0.

Orioles are 24-58 this season, but 10-6 when Andrew Cashner starts. Cashner should be the O’s representative on the All-Star team.

                            7) Baseball stuff:
                            — Cardinals put OF Marcell Ozuna (broken finger) on the IL.
                            — Cubs DFA’d OF Carlos Gonzalez.
                            — Red Sox put P Brian Johnson (non-baseball injury) on the IL.
                            — Twins activated Byron Buxton, Martin Gonzalez from the IL.

                            6) Nikola Mirotic signed a contract with Barcelona of the EuroLeague; most people thought he would get an NBA deal for $45-50M, but sounds like he didn’t like the NBA very much.

                            5) Hamilton 41, Montreal 10— CFL games don’t often have scoreless first quarters; according to Ralph Michaels on Twitter, this was just the 27th scoreless first quarter in the last 973 CFL tilts. 24 of those 27 games stayed under the total, including this one.

                            4) This week is the first time since 2005 that the 54-hole leader at PGA Tour events led by 6+ shots in back/back weeks. Nate Lashley shot a 63 Saturday, is 23-under thru three rounds.

                            3) SLS casino in Las Vegas is changing its name back to the Sahara Las Vegas: I stayed there for ten days in 2015. Nice enough casino, small rooms, very tight video poker, good eating places, but no sports book, just a counter in a restaurant to bet on games.

                            2) Minimum salary for a rookie in the NBA next season: $898,310.

                            1) The Mets have won only two World Series:
Jerry Koosman was on mound for the Mets for the last out of the ’69 World Series.

In ’78, he was traded to the Twins for a package including Jesse Orosco.

Jesse Orosco was on the mound for the last out of the ’86 World Series.

                            • LEADING OFF: All-Star rosters, London finale, UMPS CARE
                              June 29, 2019
                              By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                              STARRY NIGHT

Pitchers and reserves for the All-Star Game on July 9 in Cleveland will be announced beginning at 5:30 p.m. EDT. Houston ace Justin Verlander and Dodgers lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu are probably among the locks to make it, but as always there will surely be a few players who get snubbed. It will be interesting to see if Indians fan favorite Francisco Lindor gets an American League roster spot with the game in his home ballpark. And somebody needs to represent last-place Miami on the NL squad. The elected starters at each position were revealed Thursday.

                              IS IT ALWAYS LIKE THIS?

One day after the first Major League Baseball game in Europe was a long and wild slugfest, the Yankees and Red Sox conclude their two-game series in London with a 10:10 a.m. EDT start. New York outlasted its rival 17-13 on Saturday in a game that took 4 hours, 42 minutes - 3 minutes shy of the record for a nine-inning game. ''Well, cricket takes like all weekend to play, right? So, I'm sure a lot of people are used to it,'' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. ''We should remind them there's not 30 runs every game.''

                              HEY BLUE, GREAT CALL!

Major league umpire Chris Guccione invited a teenage ump who was involved in a game that ended in an adult brawl to attend the Dodgers-Rockies series finale at Coors Field.

Guccione and his crew just wanted to show their support for 13-year-old Josh Cordova, who found himself in the middle of a recent fight in Lakewood, Colorado. Authorities said the skirmish at a game between teams of 7-year-olds began when parents and coaches disagreed with the teen's decisions. The video of the conflict went viral.

''It is an extremely hard job to be an umpire and keep the peace and to make the calls,'' said Guccione, who is from Colorado and in his 20th season as a big league ump. ''I just want Josh and his family to have a great time at the ballpark.''

The family was brought in through UMPS CARE Charities, which is the official philanthropy of MLB umpires.

''The support has been amazing,'' said Jennifer Carriera, Josh's mother. ''We are really looking forward to this experience.''

                              DOWN UNDER

Left-hander Lewis Thorpe makes his major league debut for the Minnesota Twins in Chicago against the White Sox. Even better, he'll have his family watching after they arrived from Australia. Thorpe didn't realize his parents were making the trip, so he got a nice surprise after Saturday's game. Twins director of team travel Mike Herman told him to put on some shorts and follow him out of the clubhouse. ''I've never seen my dad cry like that,'' Thorpe said. ''It was just a surreal feeling.'' Lucas Giolito (10-2, 2.87 ERA) pitches for Chicago.

                              TOUGH STRETCH

Reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell (4-7, 5.01 ERA) looks to get back on track when Tampa Bay hosts the Texas Rangers. Snell allowed seven runs and 11 hits over 3 1/3 innings Tuesday in a loss at Minnesota and has an 11.94 ERA over his last five starts. Right-hander Jesse Chavez (3-2) will pitch for the Rangers.
