STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Logan Allen, San Diego Padres (2-0, 1.38, $254): John Cena be damned! Not only has Allen made the Majors, he is now our streaking starter. For those who don’t know Cena at one point bet Allen $1 he wouldn’t make the MLB as a motivational tacit, then personally paid him the $1 on the field during his first start.

Allen, another one of the Padres top prospects, has allowed just two runs on 11 hits in his first 13 innings of work. The rookie southpaw will look to keep it rolling when the Padres host the Giants tonight. San Diego is a -160 home favorite with a total of 8.

SLUMPING

Jeff Samardzija, San Francisco Giants (4-7, 4.52 ERA, $-48): It’s been a rough year for the Giants from top to bottom, and it’s been no different for Samardzija. The towering right-hander could be one of the pierces the Giants try to move, but he isn’t doing much to enhance his trade value.

Samardzija has been roughed up to the tune of a 7.88 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP over his last three starts. He and the Giants are currently +145 road dogs for Monday night’s matchup with the Padres. The total sits at 8.

CANADA DAY FIREWORKS

The Jays young bats have turned it around lately, bumping their average to .279, while plating 6.35 runs per game over their last 10, resulting in the Over going 7-3. And the Royals Glenn Sparkman and a sub par bullpen shouldn’t change that. While Toronto throws out Clayton Richard and maybe a worse bullpen. The Jays may not win, but we should get fireworks either way! Take the Over 10.5.

NOT HIS FAULT

The Pirates Trevor Williams takes the ball at home tonight against the visiting Cubs, which provides a bit of a sore spot for Williams. Despite pitching to a 3.68 ERA in six career starts against the Cubs, the Pirates are just 1-5 in those games. Williams is still shaking off the rust from an IL stint, giving up four home runs in his last two starts after giving up four in his previous nine. But he still has a nice WHIP of 1.19, so the signs are there. Expect him to get back on track tonight. While the Pirates lineup, that hits right-handers surprisingly well, will have a chance against Cubs rookie Adbert Alzolay. The home team has decent value as a +110 home dog.

MAHLE-ING THE BREWERS

There’s another NL Central showdown getting underway today as the Reds host the Brewers. Milwaukee is another team going with an opener today as Adrian Houser gets the ball, while Cincy counters with Tyler Mahle. While Mahle has a 2-8 record, he has pitched much better than that, particularly at home. He has a 4.35 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP overall this season and at home those numbers drop to 2.96 and a 1.13. Additionally, in two career starts against the Brewers, Mahle has allowed three earned runs on 13 hits while racking up 18 punchouts in 10.2 innings pitched. The Reds have good value at basically a Pick'em.

Angels' Skaggs dies at age 27

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs died Monday at the age of 27, stunning Major League Baseball and leading to the postponement of the team's game against the Texas Rangers.

Skaggs was with the team in Texas when he was found unresponsive in his hotel room. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said they are investigating, but no foul play is suspected at this time.

Skaggs was ''an important part of the Angels Family,'' the team said in a statement. ''Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Carli and his entire family during this devastating time.''

Skaggs had been a regular in the Angels' starting rotation since late 2016, when he returned from Tommy John surgery. He struggled with injuries repeatedly over the past three seasons, but persevered to become a valuable starter in Los Angeles' injury-plagued rotation.

The left-hander had just pitched on Saturday, allowing two runs in 4 1/3 innings in a 4-0 loss to Oakland.

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said he was ''deeply saddened'' by Skaggs' death.

''We will support the Angels' organization through this most difficult period, and we will make a variety of resources available to Tyler's teammates and other members of the baseball family,'' Manfred said in a statement.

Skaggs was born in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Woodland Hills, in the far western part of the sprawling San Fernando Valley. He graduated from Santa Monica High School in 2009, when the Angels drafted him in the first round.

The Angels traded Skaggs to Arizona in 2010, and he started his big-league career with 13 appearances over two seasons for the Diamondbacks. The Angels reacquired him in December 2013, and he has won 25 games over five seasons with the club.

Skaggs started a career-high 24 games last season, going 8-10 with a 4.02 ERA. He missed playing time in April this season with a sprained ankle, but came back strong.

Skaggs was part of the same Angels draft class as Mike Trout, and they were roommates in the low minor leagues before Skaggs was traded to Arizona. They played on the same team in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 2010.

Skaggs' mother, Debbie, was the longtime softball coach at Santa Monica High School. She famously provided postgame tips on his pitching mechanics, even deep into his big-league career.

Skaggs grew up in Santa Monica, on the west side of the sprawling Los Angeles metroplex, but rooted for the Angels instead of the closer Dodgers.

Yelich hits 30th homer, Brewers rally pat Reds 8-6

CINCINNATI (AP) Christian Yelich singled with the bases loaded and hit his major league-leading 30th homer Monday night, helping the Milwaukee Brewers rally for their sixth straight victory at Great American Ball Park, 8-6 over the Cincinnati Reds.

Milwaukee sent 10 batters to the plate for five runs in the seventh inning, with Yelich contributing an RBI single. The reigning National League MVP hit a two-run homer in the ninth that made him the first Brewer with 30 before the All-Star break.

The Brewers have won 11 of 15 overall against their NL Central rival. This time, they overcame a pair of two-run homers by Eugenio Suarez, who has three in the last two games.

Lorenzo Cain and Keston Hiura added homers for the Brewers. Jesse Winker and Eugenio went deep for the Reds.

Alex Claudio (2-2) retired the three batters he faced for the win. Jeremy Jeffress allowed a run in the ninth while getting his first save.

PIRATES 18, CUBS 5

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Josh Bell hit three home runs to boost his season total to 25 AND Pittsburgh routed Chicago.

Bell hit a three-run shot off rookie Adbert Alzolay (1-1) in the first, a two-run drive off Alzolay in the second and finished off a four-hit, seven-RBI night by taking new Chicago closer Craig Kimbrel deep in the eighth.

Adam Frazier finished 5 for 6 and tied a major league record with four doubles. Colin Moran had a career-high five hits for the Pirates.

Jung Ho Kang hit his seventh home run of the season off Chicago infielder Daniel Descalso, who made a cameo on the mound in the seventh with the game well out of hand. Jose Osuna hit a solo home run off Kimbrel, who came on to get some work after making his debut with the Cubs last week.

Bell became the 20th Pirates player to hit three home runs in a game and the first left-handed batter to do it since Hall of Famer Willie Stargell in 1971. Frazier's four doubles matched a mark shared by many players - Matt Carpenter of St. Louis was the last to do it on Aug. 26, 2018.

Javier Baez hit his 21st home run for Chicago. Kris Bryant and David Bote had two hits each, but the Cubs couldn't keep pace while dropping their third straight.

Trevor Williams (3-2) took advantage of the outburst to pick up his first victory since May 10.

RAYS 6, ORIOLES 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Kevin Kiermaier's three run home run lifted Tampa Bay to a win over Baltimore in a game in which two-way player Brandon McKay went 0 for 4 in his major league debut as a hitter for the Rays.

Kiermaier's 10th homer came off Branden Kline (1-4) in the sixth inning after a walk and a single by Avisail Garcia.

McKay, who gave up one hit in six scoreless innings Saturday night in his major league pitching debut against the Texas Rangers, grounded out four times and was picked off second base on a throw from catcher Pedro Severino.

Adam Kolarek (3-2) got the win and Jose Alvarado pitched the ninth for his first save since May 26.

Tom Eshelman made his major league pitching debut for the Orioles, giving up two runs on six hits in five innings without recording a strikeout.

Renato Nunez had two hits for Baltimore.

The crowd of 20,441 included about 10,000 fans who purchased $2 tickets.

TORONTO (AP) - Freddy Galvis hit a pair of solo home runs, rookie Cavan Biggio had four RBIs and Toronto beat Kansas City.

Randal Grichuk had four hits and four RBIs and Teoscar Hernandez added a solo home run as the Blue Jays won for the 15th time in 19 regular-season home meetings with the Royals.

Wearing red caps and jerseys in honor of Canada Day, the Blue Jays scored in each of the first four innings and finished with a season-high 18 hits.

Clayton Richard (1-4) allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings to win for the first time since last August.

Royals right-hander Glenn Sparkman (2-4) allowed season highs of nine hits and eight runs in three innings.

12) 29 years ago today was the only time I was ever fired from a job; it was a job in the NY State court system, and I was there for 10 months- the person they wanted to have the job didn’t score well enough on her civil service test, so they needed a schmuck to fill the item until she became reachable on the list.

I was that schmuck.

So on July 2, 1990 I was told to take a hike by the Chief Clerk, which taught me a few lessons, the biggest one being: Money ain’t everything; happiness is way more valuable.

Don’t stress out about things you can’t control. Do your best, be a good person, and things will work out well enough in the end. Health and happiness are the most important things.

11) Friday/Saturday, the Cleveland Indians became the first major league team EVER to get shutout in consecutive games, while allowing 13+ runs in both games.

10) Think about how much the NFL has changed over the last 40 years.

In 1976, the Eagles hired Dick Vermeil as coach; he had open tryouts for the public- a 30-year old bartender made the team as a special teams player, a story that was chronicled in the fine movie Invincible, with Mark Wahlberg.

That summer, the Eagles did 2-a-day practices six days a week for six weeks, played six games in the preseason. Now, 2-a-days are forbidden, they play four preseason games (the better players play 2 or 3 games, if that) and there is very little hitting in camp, to avoid injuries.

2) Kevin Durant played three whole seasons for Golden State, but the Warriors are going to retire his #35, which is weird. Angels teammates and the entire Major League Baseball community are mourning the stunning death Monday of Los Angeles pitcher Tyler Skaggs, who was found unresponsive in his Texas hotel room. He was 27. Police said they were investigating, but no foul play was suspected.

''Words cannot express the deep sadness we feel right now,'' Angels star Mike Trout posted on Twitter.

The club's scheduled game against the Rangers was postponed, and Rangers officials said there had been no discussions on the status of Tuesday's game or the rest of what was supposed to be a four-game series. They said only that Monday's game would not be made up this week.

''Real life takes precedence here,'' general manager Jon Daniels said. ''Some things are a lot bigger than baseball.''

MILESTONE MAN

Philadelphia slugger Bryce Harper has 199 career home runs and 999 hits going into an NL East showdown at first-place Atlanta. Harper hopes to reach 200 homers and 1,000 hits with one swing, even though it would mean just one souvenir instead of two.

''I'll take that - one less ball to carry,'' he said. ''Hopefully I'll hit a ball into the bullpen in the next couple of days and my guys can grab it.''

Dallas Keuchel (1-1, 5.06 ERA) makes his third start for the Braves, who lead the second-place Phillies by 5+ games. Aaron Nola (6-2, 4.22) goes for Philadelphia.

CITY GAME

Back from their slugfests in London, where they piled up 29 runs in a two-game sweep of Boston last weekend, the Yankees visit the New York Mets in a Subway Series opener. James Paxton (5-3, 4.34 ERA) pitches for the AL East leaders against Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler (6-5, 4.51). The crosstown rivals split a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium last month following a rainout. This time, the Bronx Bombers (54-28) seek their sixth straight victory and 14th in 15 games. They've homered in a major league-record 31 in a row, although sluggers Gary Sanchez (left thumb) and Luke Voit (left abdomen) got nicked up in Europe. Meanwhile, the Mets (38-47) snapped a seven-game slide Sunday with a comeback win over Atlanta.

HOME RUN DERBY

Baseballs keep flying out of ballparks all around the majors. A month after setting a record for most home runs in a month, big league batters did it again and were on pace to shatter the season mark. The Elias Sports Bureau said there were 1,142 home runs in June, seven more than in May. A total of 3,421 home runs were hit in 1,255 games through Sunday, an average of 2.73 per game. That is up 19% from the 2.28 average through June last year. Batters were on pace to hit 6,624 home runs - well above the record of 6,105 set in 2017 and up from 5,585 last year.

HELP WANTED

Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks (7-5, 3.36 ERA) comes off the injured list to start against a Pirates team that racked up a season-high 23 hits Monday night in an 18-5 rout of Chicago. All-Star slugger Josh Bell smashed three homers for Pittsburgh as he tunes up for the Home Run Derby next week in Cleveland. The scuffling Cubs fell out of first place in the NL Central, a game behind Milwaukee. They are 16-24 away from Wrigley Field and 7-11 over their last 18 games.

''We've got to play better in all facets,'' infielder Daniel Descalso said. ''I don't think the product we've put out on the field recently is indicative of the team we have in here and the talent we have in here.''

Hendricks was sidelined with shoulder inflammation.
