      • STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

        STREAKING

David Price, Boston Red Sox (4-2, 2.70 ERA, $-382):
After starting the year off with a couple of shaky performances, the Price has been right for Boston even if that hasn't always been reflected in the money column. In his last five starts (which was really more like four starts since he left in the first inning against Houston due to flu) he's gone 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP.

Today Price and the Red Sox host the Texas Rangers and a hot starting pitcher of their own in Adrian Sampson. In his previous five starts, Sampson is 5-0 with a 1.99 ERA and 1.07 WHIP. Boston is a -240 favorite but the Under 9 play seems like the more intriguing option.

        SLUMPING

Yusei Kikuchi, Seattle Mariners (3-4, 4.99 ERA, $-33):
Kikuchi has been pretty poor for the M's all season but he's going through a particularily rough stretch over his last three starts. He hasn't made it through more than three innings in any of those appearances had an 0-3 record with a 14.40 ERA and 2.50 WHIP. Unfortunately for Kikuchi and the Mariners they'll be going up against the Minnesota Twins tonight and Minny will be hungry for a win after their sloppy loss yesterday. The Twins bat an incredible .300 against southpaws (although that didn't seem to help them last night against Tommy Milone), so Kikuchi could be in for a world of hurt.

Seattle is a +150 underdog with the O/U set at 10.5.

        3 STRIKES

        BATS HEATING UP IN HOTLANTA

The O/U between Pittsburgh and Atlanta opened at 9 and has already moved to 9.5 for good reason, this is the fourth game of a series which has seen an average of 15.67 runs per game.

The Pirates are 19-6-1 to the Over in their last 26 games and 5-0 to the Over in Joe Musgrove's previous five starts. While the Braves are are 7-0-1 O/U in their last eight home contests and 5-1 O/U in Julio Teheran's previous six starts. The Over has also cashed in five of the last six meetings between these teams.

        ROLLING OUT THE WELCOME "MATT"

Padres starter Matt Strahm (2-5, 4.03 ERA) has made 97 appearances in his four year career (most of them in relief) but has yet to throw a single pitch at Coors Field. He'll be making his Coors Field debut tonight, with the Friars +117 underdogs against the Rockies.

Strahm should expect an unfriendly welcome, not only do the Rockies lead the league in runs per game (6.24), batting average (.299) and slugging percentage (.519) at home, but they're also an impressive 20-8 in their last 28 tilts at Coors Field. The Rockies are also 7-3 in Jon Gray's last 10 starts while the Padres are just 1-6 in the last seven meetings head to head.

        SOUTHPAW SHOWDOWN

On what is an excellent night for sports fans with the NBA Finals and the U.S. Open, the MLB nightcap is a real doozy as Jon Lester and the Cubs visit Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers. The Dodgers are moderate -165 favorites for this one thanks to Kershaw quietly having another solid season (3.00 ERA, 1.05 WHIP) and the fact that their bats always seem to show up at home.

While Lester’s numbers lately don’t look great, he has mostly been tagged early and settled in. If he can get through the first few innings this one should be tight. Lester has also pitched well against the Dodgers recently, allowing just four runs in his last four starts against them. Kershaw meanwhile has also pitched well against the Cubbies. We’re leaning towards this one staying Under the total of 8 in a fun pitcher’s duel.

            • Angels' Ohtani first Japanese player to hit for cycle
              June 14, 2019
              By The Associated Press

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Shohei Ohtani became the first Japanese-born player to hit for the cycle, helping the Los Angeles Angels beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-3 Thursday night after a delay caused by a power outage.

Ohtani hit a three-run homer in the first inning and completed the feat with a single in the seventh. He is the eighth Angels player to hit for the cycle and the first since Mike Trout on May 21, 2013.

Albert Pujols also homered for the Angels, becoming the sixth player ever with 200 home runs in each league. He hit 445 in 11 seasons with St. Louis and has 200 in eight years with the Angels, including 12 this season.

He led off the third with a double and tripled in the fifth before Pujols' home run. A two-out single in the seventh completed the cycle in just four plate appearances, and fans at Tropicana Field gave him a standing ovation.

The game was held up 36 minutes by a power delay in the fourth with the Angels leading 3-0.

Yarbrough (5-3) gave up five runs and five hits (all for extra bases) in six innings, striking out four.

Angels starter Tyler Skaggs (5-6) pitched five innings, giving up three runs and seven hits while striking out five in the Angels' third straight win.

Cam Bedrosian pitched the ninth for his first save.

              BRAVES 6, PIRATES 5

ATLANTA (AP) - Josh Donaldson drove in the tiebreaking run in Atlanta's five-run fifth inning to win his rematch with Joe Musgrove (4-7), and the Braves completed a four-game sweep.

The Braves have won seven straight to pass Philadelphia for the NL East lead. The Phillies and Braves open a three-game series on Friday night.

Julio Teheran (5-4) allowed two runs, one earned, in six innings. He has allowed no more than one earned run in his last eight starts.

Luke Jackson gave up Starling Marte's run-scoring single in the ninth before recovering for his 10th save in 15 chances.

              CARDINALS 4, METS 4, 8 1/2 INNINGS, SUSPENDED

NEW YORK (AP) - The game between St. Louis and New York was suspended because of rain moments after Harrison Bader hit an RBI double with two outs in the top of the ninth inning that made it 4-all.

Play will resume Friday at 6:10 p.m. beginning in the bottom of the ninth. That will be followed by the regularly scheduled game between the teams.

St. Louis scored twice in the ninth off closer Edwin Diaz to tie it, capping a bizarre sequence that saw umpires reverse their call and order the tarp off the field right after it had been rolled out.

Rain was falling hard when New York took the field for the ninth with a 4-2 lead, and umps ordered the field covered. As the tarp got spread, rookie first baseman Pete Alonso and several other Mets pleaded their case to play on.

After the umps and both managers met in the middle of the diamond, the call was overturned - no review of the weather map needed. The grounds crew finished working on the field and action resumed after a nine-minute wait.

              RED SOX 7, RANGERS 6

BOSTON (AP) - Xander Bogaerts hit a solo homer in the seventh inning, Boston's fifth long ball of the game, and the Red Sox rallied from a five-run deficit to beat Texas.

Five players homered for Boston, which outlasted Texas to earn a split of the four-game series. The finale lasted 4 hours, 6 minutes.

All seven runs for Boston came on homers. Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a three-run shot in the second and the Red Sox also got solo homers from J.D. Martinez, Michael Chavis and Rafael Devers.

Bogaerts was the last to go deep for Boston, driving a pitch from Peter Fairbanks (0-1) out to left and completing a wild comeback for the Red Sox, who lost the first two games of the series.

Brandon Workman (4-1) got the win with a scoreless seventh despite walking two as Red Sox pitchers struggled with their command throughout the long night.

              DIAMONDACKS 5, NATIONALS 0

WASHINGTON (AP) - Zack Greinke took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and Arizona beat Washington.

Alex Avila and Jarrod Dyson homered for Arizona, which has won seven of eight.

Greinke (8-2) pitched 7 1/3 innings, leaving after a 63-minute rain delay. The right-hander struck out three without a walk. He had faced the minimum when Trea Turner led off the seventh with a grounder between first and second. First baseman Christian Walker made a diving stop but was unable to get off a throw against the speedy Turner, who legged out an infield single.

Washington starter Erick Fedde (1-1) allowed five runs and six hits over six innings.

              ROYALS 7, TIGERS 3

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Nicky Lopez hit his first major league homer in the stadium where he played college ball, Homer Bailey (5-6) allowed two hits in six shutout innings and Kansas City beat Detroit in the first big league regular season game played in Nebraska.

The game at TD Ameritrade Park coincided with the buildup to the College World Series, which begins Saturday. All eight CWS teams were among the sellout crowd of 25,454 and participated in a pregame ceremony with the major league teams.

Lopez played at Creighton University, whose campus is six blocks away, and hit just one home run in 75 games at TD Ameritrade from 2014-16. The rookie infielder returned to Omaha 8 for 61 in his previous 15 games and sat out Wednesday's game in Kansas City before going 2 for 4.

Matthew Boyd (5-5), who pitched for Oregon State in the 2013 CWS and threw a four-hit shutout against Indiana, lasted four innings in his shortest outing in six starts.

              WHITE SOX 5, YANKEES 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Leury Garcia hit a tiebreaking solo homer off Adam Ottavino (2-2) in the seventh inning, and Chicago rallied to beat New York.

Tim Anderson also connected in Chicago's fourth win in five games, and four relievers combined for 3 1/3 innings of three-hit ball. Batting in the top two slots in the lineup, Garcia and Anderson combined for four hits and five RBIs.

Evan Marshall (2-0) got three outs for the win, and Aaron Bummer worked the ninth for his first career save after regular closer Alex Colome threw a season-high 39 pitches during Tuesday's 7-5 victory over Washington. Marshall hasn't allowed an earned run in 16 appearances this year.

Brett Gardner homered for the Yankees, who dropped to 4-7 in June. Clint Frazier finished with three hits.

              TWINS 10, MARINERS 5

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Nelson Cruz homered and had three RBIs, utility infielder Ehire Adrianza's hustle keyed a six-run sixth for Minnesota.

Cruz homered in the third and added a two-run single in the sixth when Adrianza helped key the rally. Max Kepler led off with a walk, and Adrianza singled Kepler to third. Mariners right-hander Brandon Brennan (2-6), on in relief, threw wildly past first trying to pick off Adrianza.

Kepler scored and Adrianza took second on the throwing error. Adrianza advanced on Brennan's wild pitch and scored on a ground ball by Jason Castro with the infield in, sliding headfirst to beat second baseman Dee Gordon's throw. Cruz and Kepler each drove in two runs with singles later in the inning.

Ryan Harper (2-0) was the beneficiary of the Twins' rally.

              BLUE JAYS 12, ORIOLES 3

BALTIMORE (AP) - Lourdes Gurriel Jr. homered to ignite a seven-run sixth inning, Cavan Biggio went deep twice and Toronto had 17 hits while beating Baltimore.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Danny Jansen had three hits and two RBIs apiece for the Blue Jays.

Gurriel started the onslaught with a drive to center off Gabriel Ynoa (0-3), and Freddy Galvis and Jansen added two-run singles before Guerrero and Justin Smoak capped the Blue Jays' biggest inning of the year with RBI singles.

Marcus Stroman (4-8) was the beneficiary of the offensive display after receiving only 26 runs of support in his previous 14 starts. The right-hander allowed two runs, one earned, and seven hits over six innings.

                • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

College football spreads for October 17-19:

                  — Ohio State (-14) @ Northwestern

                  — Oregon @ Washington (-6)

                  — Auburn (-13) @ Arkansas

                  — LSU (-6.5) @ Mississippi State

                  — West Virginia @ Oklahoma (-21.5)

                  — Michigan (-4.5) @ Penn State

                  **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…….

                  13) Raptors 114, Warriors 110— Toronto wins its first NBA title; Siakam/Lowry both had 26 points. Raptors went 6-2 vs Golden State this season, counting regular season games.

Golden State won only five of 24 quarters in this series. Klay Thompson scored 30 points in 32:00, but he hurt his left knee and left the arena on crutches- he tore his ACL.

                  12) People on Twitter Thursday were getting excited, one way or the other, because the Warriors were 3-5 this season in games Marc Davis officiates; Raptors were 9-0. Now it is 3-6 and 10-0.

There are three officials for every game; doubtful one guy makes that big a difference. There are always going to be stats like that; how relevant they are is debatable.

                  11) You can actually bet on which player scores the first basket of the night; Kyle Lowry (9-1) was the winner in this game.

                  10) Best I can tell, 2006 is last time the NHL/NBA both had first-time champs in same season; Miami Heat, Carolina Hurricanes won titles that spring.

                  9) Angels 5, Rays 3— They had a power outage at the Trop during this game.

Albert Pujols became the 6th player ever to hit 200+ homers for two different teams. Shohei Ohtani hit for the cycle.

                  8) Former Texans’ GM Brian Gaine was accused of discriminating against African-Americans in a complaint that was recently filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which may help explain the odd timing of his recent firing.

A former security coordinator for the Texans made the accusation, after he was let go by the team on May 8. Gaine was fired on June 7.

                  7) Baseball stuff:
                  — New York (A) put 1B Kendrys Morales (calf) on the IL.
                  — Tampa Bay put 3B Christian Arroyo (forearm) on the IL.
                  — Cubs put P Carl Edwards Jr (thoractic strain) on the IL.

                  6) Royals 7, Tigers 2— Game was played in Omaha, to kick off the College World Series; nine players in this game, plus Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire, played in the CWS in their college days. Omaha is where the Royals’ AAA team plays.

This was the first major league game ever played in Nebraska; let the record show that KC’s Cheslor Cuthbert is the first player in MLB history to get a hit in a game in Nebraska.

                  5) Former St Joe’s basketball coach Phil Martelli will be making $450,000 a season to be an assistant coach at Michigan the next two years.

                  4) Sounds like Zion Williamson will fit into the NBA just fine; he signed a marketing deal with Prime Sports back in April but terminated the agreement on May 31, three weeks before he is even drafted into the league. NBA has more drama off the court than on it.

                  3) Apparently, Thursday was Walmart’s 40th birthday; how do I know this? Kept getting text messages from them Thursday telling me this, and I rarely shop there.

                  2) Detroit’s prize pitching prospect, Casey Mize was pulled from a minor league game after 23 pitches in the third inning Thursday; he left with the trainer with an undisclosed injury.

                  1) John Calipari parlayed his dalliance with UCLA into a 10-year deal with his current team (Kentucky) that is worth $86M. It has some unusual pieces to it.

Starting with the sixth year of the contract, Calipari has the option to step down as coach and become “special assistant to the athletics director/university representative,” a title that receives $950,000 per year, as opposed to the $9M a year he makes to coach. Calipari is 60 right now; he figures to end his career with the Wildcats.

                    Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Braves (7-0 last seven)

Following a pair of sweeps over the Marlins and Pirates, the Braves have vaulted into the top spot of the NL East at 40-29. Atlanta became the second National League team to reach the 40-win mark after knocking off Pittsburgh on Thursday, 6-5 to pull off a four-game sweep at SunTrust Park. The Braves’ offense has heated up during this stretch by scoring at least seven runs five times, while cashing the OVER six times.

Atlanta remains at home to welcome in Philadelphia for the first time this season. The Braves look to avenge a three-game sweep by the Phillies to begin the 2019 campaign, but Atlanta swept Philadelphia in a four-game set last September to basically wrap up the division title. Max Fried takes the mound for the Braves in the opener, as Atlanta has won five of his past six starts. Fried is coming off a pair of no-decisions in road wins at Miami and Pittsburgh, as the Braves have scored at least seven runs in four of his past five trips to the mound.

Coldest team: Pirates (0-7 last seven)

Pittsburgh’s last win came at home against Atlanta on June 6. The Pirates are coming off sweeps at the hands of a pair of playoff teams from 2018 as Pittsburgh dropped three games at Milwaukee and four in Atlanta. In fact, the Pirates have lost nine of their last 10 games away from PNC Park, while allowing at least five runs in all seven defeats on this current road trip.

The Bucs will try to turn around their luck with a trip to south Florida this weekend to face the last-place Marlins. Steven Brault gets the ball for Pittsburgh on Friday, as the Pirates have won three of his five starts this season. Brault hasn’t yielded more than two runs in any of his past three appearances, but the Pirates dropped his last two starts to the Braves and Brewers.

Hottest pitcher: Lucas Giolito, White Sox (9-1, 2.28 ERA)

It’s not a crazy statement to make in mid-June that Giolito is one of the leaders to win the American League Cy Young award. Giolito has won seven consecutive decisions since the start of May, while not allowing a run in each of his last two victories against the Indians and Royals. In this 7-0 run, the White Sox have hit the UNDER in each of Giolito’s seven starts, as Chicago’s opponents have been limited to one run or less six times. The right-hander is listed as a short favorite against the Yankees, as Chicago rallied from a 4-0 deficit on Thursday to shock New York, 5-4.

Coldest pitcher: Brad Keller, Royals (3-8, 4.29 ERA)

Kansas City took two of three from Detroit for its first series win since sweeping Cleveland back in mid-April. The Royals have lost 10 of their last 11 games off a victory as Kansas City travels to Minnesota to face the top team in the AL Central. Keller is actually coming off a pair of quality starts in his last two outings against Chicago and Texas, but the Royals scored a combined one run in those defeats. The Royals own a dreadful 1-8 record in Keller’s last nine starts, while allowing three runs in six innings of a 5-4 home defeat to the Twins in April.

Biggest OVER run: Twins (8-1-1 last 10)

Minnesota’s offense continues to click as the Twins reached double-digit runs in a game for the eighth time this season in Thursday’s 10-5 triumph over the Mariners. The last five OVERS for the Twins in this stretch have been on totals of 9 ½ or higher, but Minnesota has scored at least six runs four times, while allowing at five runs or more in the past three games against Seattle. Kyle Gibson starts for Minnesota in Friday’s opener against Kansas City, as the right-hander has cashed the OVER in six of seven road games, but this game takes place at Target Field, where he is 3-1 to the UNDER.

Biggest UNDER run: Reds (9-0 last nine)

Cincinnati returns home from a 3-4 road trip, which saw the Reds split a pair of contests with the cross-state rival Indians. The Reds continue to receive solid pitching by allowing four runs or less in eight consecutive games, while giving up a total of four runs against Cleveland. Cincinnati faces another interleague opponent this weekend as Texas invades the Great American Ballpark. Tyler Mahle has made 12 starts for the Reds this season, but only three have come at home. Cincinnati has posted an 8-3-1 mark to the UNDER when Mahle is on the mound, while the Reds have scored two runs or fewer in six of those outings.

Matchup to watch: Brewers vs. Giants

Milwaukee can become the third National League team to reach 40 victories with a win on Friday at San Francisco. The Brewers held off the Astros in 14 innings on Wednesday, 6-3 to pick up their sixth win in the last nine games away from Miller Park. Milwaukee is making its second trip to California this season as the Brewers posted a 2-4 record against the Angels and Dodgers back in April.

San Francisco is coming off back-to-back home wins for the first time in two months after sweeping a two-game set from slumping San Diego. The Giants have won six of their last 10 contests, which includes three victories in series openers. San Francisco struggled with Milwaukee last season by dropping six of seven matchups, including three of four at Oracle Park.

Zach Davies owns a perfect 7-0 mark on the mound for the Brewers this season, while defeating the Pirates in each of his last two starts. The Milwaukee right-hander has compiled a solid 1.88 ERA on the highway, but the Brewers are 4-3 in his seven road starts. Davies is one of the top UNDER pitchers in baseball as the Brewers are 11-2 to the UNDER in his 13 starts, including six UNDERS away from Miller Park.

Drew Pomeranz counters for San Francisco, as the Giants’ southpaw outdueled Clayton Kershaw in a 2-1 victory his last time out. Although Pomeranz didn’t figure in the decision, he tossed five scoreless innings and struck out seven batters to help San Francisco cash as a +215 underdog. Beware with Pomeranz as the veteran hurler has allowed five runs or more in three of his past five starts, but has cashed as a heavy ‘dog of +170 or higher three times this season.

                    Betcha didn’t know:
The Nationals look to bounce back after getting blanked by the Diamondbacks in the opener of their four-game set on Thursday. Cy Young winner Max Scherzer takes the mound on Friday looking to capitalize on a pair of solid road outings in wins at Cincinnati and San Diego. However, the Nationals own a dreadful 0-7 mark in Scherzer’s seven home starts this season, while the D-backs are riding a 7-1 run the last eight games.
