Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

    13) Big question for NBA commish Adam Silver this summer: Could Kawhi Leonard’s success this postseason lead to more regular season resting for NBA stars?

People pay a lot of money to go to games and obviously, they want to see the stars play; Leonard sat out 22 games this season. Same goes for TV ratings; people like to watch great players play.

    12) Michigan G Charles Matthews tore his ACL as he prepared for the NBA Draft, is now out until at least January, and thats the risk of bolting school early. He still intends to leave Michigan; his agent still thinks he’ll be taken in the second round of the draft. We’ll see about that; the agent doesn’t get paid if Matthews goes back to Michigan.

    11) Nationals 5, Padres 1— Game was tied in 8th inning, then Kendrick, Turner, Eaton, Rendon hit four consecutive bombs off of reliever Craig Stammen to settle things.

    10) El Paso Chihuahuas’ pitcher Kyle McGrath threw seven perfect innings Sunday before giving up a hit in the 8th inning; it was only his 4th professional start, in his 184th minor league game. El Paso is the AAA farm club of the San Diego Padres.

    9) Brewers 5, Pirates 2— Closer Josh Hader pitched on back/back days for only third time this year; by way of comparison, San Diego’s Kirby Yates has pitched on back/back days seven times this season.

    8) Twins 13, Tigers 2— Jake Odorizzi (9-2) is the first Twins’ pitcher to win nine straight decisions since Johan Santana during his 2006 Cy Young season.

    7) Baseball stuff:
    — Mets put 2B Robinson Cano back on the IL.
    — White Sox put P Dylan Covey (shoulder) on the IL.
    — Bronx put P Domingo German (hip flexor) on 10-Day IL.

    6) Rockies-Mets pitching matchup Sunday was Hoffman-Syndergaard, both of whom were 1st round draft picks of the Toronto Blue Jays, Hoffman in ’14, Syndergaard in ’10.

    5) Bronx OF Brett Gardner threw a batting helmet in the dugout the other night; it bounced back, hit him in the lip and cut him— he needed six stitches.

    4) Kevin Durant practiced with the Warriors Sunday, who haven’t announced yet if he will play Monday night in Toronto- they officially listed him as questionable.

    3) Rory McIlroy shot a 61 Sunday and won the Canadian Open by seven shots.

McIlroy is the last golfer to win a major the week after he won another tournament; he won the Bridgestone and then the PGA in 2014.

    2) Graeme McDowell drained a 30-foot putt on the last hole Sunday to qualify for the British Open, which is being played in McDowell’s hometown this summer.

    1) University of Alabama is returning a $21.5M gift from its largest donor and taking his name off the law school after he called for Alabama to be boycotted over the state’s new abortion law.

              • Ballpark Figures - Week 12
                Joe Williams

                Subway Time

If weather permits (see below), the New York Yankees will host the New York Mets for a two-game interleague series on Monday, and this annual meeting usually just means a little more. Even though the teams do not play in the same league, they do share the same city, and it can get awfully contentious. On Monday, we'll get LHP Jason Vargas taking the baseball for the Mets, while ace RHP Masahiro Tanaka will be the starting pitcher for the home side. Vargas enters with a 2-3 record and a 3.57 ERA, and he is 1-1 with an impressive 0.86 ERA and 1.10 WHIP across his past three outings.

Tanaka heads into this one with a surprising 3-5 record, although he has a respectable 3.42 ERA and .297 opponent on-base percentage. He'll return for this start off of the paternity, as he will celebrate this start as a new dad. Perhaps the impending birth of a child is why he has been off the past couple of starts, coughing up four earned runs in each of his past two outings, both losses. The Yankees are just 3-5 across his past eight outings, too.

The Mets have won four of their past five outings, and they're 4-1 in the past five against right-handed starting pitchers. They're also 11-5 in the past 16 starts by Vargas. However, the Mets are also 1-4 in Vargas' past five outings against a team with a winning record, 3-8 in his past 11 while working on four days of rest and they're 1-7 in their past eight games on the road against teams with a right-handed starting pitcher. The Mets are also just 4-9 in the past 13 against winning teams and 5-12 in the past 17 on the road in interleague play.

For the Yankees, they narrowly avoided a sweep in Cleveland, grinding out a win in extras on Sunday. They're still 35-16 across the past 51 games overall. They are also 6-1 in the past seven interleague games agaisnt a left-handed starting pitcher while going 5-0 in their past five home games against teams with a losing overall mark. The Yankees are also 3-7 in Tanaka's past 10 starts on a grass surface while going 2-5 in his past seven interleague assignments.

Total bettors will likely the fact the under is 5-0-2 in the past seven starts by Vargas, and 3-0-1 in his past four against winning teams. However, the over is 6-2-1 in his past nine on the road, while going 5-2-3 in his past 10 road outings against a team with a winning record. The under is 3-1-1 in their past five overall, and 4-1-1 in the past six vs. RHP. For the Yankees, the under is 4-0-1 in the past five interleague games while going 9-2-1 in the past 12 at home. The under is also 4-1-1 in Tanaka's past six home outings and 4-0-1 across his past five interleague starts, while going 7-3 in his past 10 against NL East foes. The over has connected in each of the past four meetings in the Bronx.

                Looking Ahead

                Monday, June 10

The Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox hook up on Monday in a battle of left-handed starting pitchers. The Rangers roll out LHP Mike Minor, who has cooled off a bit after a hot start. Texas is 2-5 across the past seven road outings, while going 4-9 in his past 13 against teams with a winning record. The Rangers are also just 1-6 across his past seven starts in Game 1 of a series.

Fort the Red Sox, they counter with LHP Chris Sale, who hasn't been his normal self this season. The Red Sox are 1-4 over his past five home outings and 1-4 in his past five vs. AL West foes. In addition, the Red Sox are just 4-9 over his past 13 starts overall. Boston has also won just four of their past 15 tries against teams with a winning overall record. However, they are 16-6 across the past 22 home game against a left-handed starting pitcher. The under is 6-1 in Minor's past seven starts, including 4-1 in the past five on the road and 5-2 in his past seven road outings against winning teams. The under is 4-0 in Sale's past four, and 6-0 in his past six against AL West teams while going 7-0 in his past seven while working on four days of rest.

Boston has been a difficult matchup for Texas, as the Rangers are 3-13 in the past 16 meetings, and 0-7 in their past seven tries in Fenway Park.

                Weather Report
The weather forecast looks ominous for the Bronx, with rain chances at or around 80 percent for most of the evening. That might mean a day-night doubleheader on Tuesday between these rivals.

Rain is also in the forecast for the Diamondbacks and Phillies at 'The Vault', with chances of rain around 60 percent and showing no signs of tapering off through midnight ET. Those are the only two weather trouble spots on Monday, however.

                Tuesday, June 11

The Reds heads up Interstate 71 (OK, they probably flew) for the annual Battle of Ohio interleague series at Progressive Field. Cincinnati rolls with RHP Luis Castillo against Cleveland and RHP Trevor Bauer. Cincinnati has won just two of the past seven games overall, but they're 4-1 in his past five against teams with a winning record. The Reds are 1-4 in the past five road games vs. RHP, 0-8 in the past eight against AL Central teams and just 14-39 in the past 53 on the road in interleague play.

For the Indians, they have won four straight against NL Central teams, while going 4-0 in the past four following an off day. However, they're 3-9 in the past 12 vs. RHP, and 1-6 in the past seven at home against a righty. They're also struggling with 'Bauer Outage' on the hill, going 0-4 in Bauer's past four starts, 1-5 in his past six six outings at home and 4-10 in the past 14 interleague starts. In this series the Reds are a dismal 4-17 in the past 21 trips to Cleveland while losing four straight in this series.

The Padres and Giants kick off a two-game set at Oracle Park in San Francisco, and San Diego might have the upper hand with RHP Chris Paddack. The Padres are .500 at 33-33, just like Paddack is .500 at 4-4, but he has a solid 2.97 ERA and .241 on-base percentage against while registering 66 strikeouts over just 60 2/3 innings. San Diego has won six of the past seven in Game 1 of a new series, and they're 4-1 in Paddack's past five starts against a team with a losing record. San Diego is also 14-4 in the past 18 following an off day.

The Giants counter with RHP Tyler Beede, who pitched well in Miami in his first start of the season. However, San Francisco has really struggled lately, going 1-4 in the past five overall, 1-5 in the past six inside the NL West and 1-7 in the past eight games at home. They're also 0-4 in the past four at home vs. RHP.

As far as the total, the over is 6-2-2 in San Diego's past 10 overall, and 3-1-1 in their past five vs. RHP. The under is 7-2 in Paddack's past nine, however, and the under is 4-0 in the past four divisional games, too. The over is 6-2 in the past eight home games for the Giants, but the under is 20-9-2 in the past 31 at home against righties. The under is also 6-2 in the past eight in this series, with the Padres also winning six of the past eight.

                Weather Report
Wind will be the story on Tuesday. The Jays and Orioles will be contending with winds of 10-13 mph blowing in from the left-center field power alley toward home plate, knocking the ball down for right-handed power hitters. In the Bronx, winds will be blowing across the diamond from third to first at a 12-15 mph clip. Winds will also be the story in Philadelphia with 10-13 mph winds gusting in from left-center field. In Boston, the Rangers and Red Sox will also face 11-14 mph winds blowing out toward Pesky's Pole in right field. The good news is that no precipitation should ruin the day at any of the venues.

                      • D'backs beat Phillies 13-8, teams combine for record 13 HRs
                        June 10, 2019
                        By The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) The Arizona Diamondbacks hit three straight home runs to open the game and finished with a team-record eight in a 13-8 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in a homer-happy game on Monday night.

Scott Kingery hit two of Philadelphia's five home runs for the combined MLB record of 13 homers in one game.

Jarrod Dyson, Ketel Marte and David Peralta hit consecutive homers off Jerad Eickhoff in the first inning. Eduardo Escobar became the first Diamondback to homer from different sides of the plate in consecutive innings. Ildemaro Vargas also homered twice and Alex Avila went deep.

Eickhoff (3-4) was chased in the fourth inning and the Diamondbacks up 7-3. He allowed five hits in three-plus inning - all the hits homers, and Arizona won its fifth straight game.

Arizona was the first team to hit three straight home runs to begin the first inning since the Diamondbacks did it on July 21, 2017, at home against Washington ace Max Scherzer.

The Diamondbacks had hit six homers in a game six times in franchise history, the last coming June 1, 2018, against the Marlins.

Jean Segura homered and Rhys Hoskins and Jay Bruce each hit solo shots for the Phillies.

Zack Godley (3-4) picked up the win, working three-plus innings and allowing two hits, two walks with one strikeout.

                        RANGERS 4, RED SOX 3

BOSTON (AP) - Danny Santana doubled to lead off the 11th inning for his fourth hit of the game and scored on Elvis Andrus' single, giving Texas a victory on a night the city of Boston's concerns were focused on ex-slugger David Ortiz.

Near the end of the game, Ortiz landed in his adopted city in an air ambulance from the Dominican Republic, where he was shot in a nightclub on Sunday night. Fans observed a moment of reflection before the game and chanted his nickname - ''Papi!'' - during it.

But the Red Sox weren't able to manage a walk-off hit like those that were the hallmark of Ortiz's career.

It was the Rangers who rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the ninth inning to take a 3-2 lead. Boston rallied to tie it in the bottom half, but Texas went ahead again in the 11th.

Jesse Chavez (2-1) pitched the 10th, and Chris Martin pitched the 11th for his second save.

Ryan Brasier (2-3) took the loss.

                        CARDINALS 4, MARLINS 1

MIAMI (AP) - Michael Wacha pitched six scoreless innings in his return to the rotation and St. Louis broke a three-game losing streak.

Wacha (4-2) benefited from three double plays and a pickoff in his first start since May 22. He allowed five hits, struck out four and lowered his ERA to 5.63.

Jordan Hicks worked around a leadoff single in the ninth and struck out two for his 13th save.

Sandy Alcantara (3-6), facing his former team for the first time, struggled through five-plus innings and allowed four runs, but only one was earned.

The Cardinals scored the first run in the fourth on doubles by Marcell Ozuna and Yairo Munoz. St. Louis added three unearned runs in the sixth inning and totaled just four hits.

                        RAYS 6, ATHLETICS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Charlie Morton remained unbeaten with Tampa Bay, pitching seven shutout innings in a win over Oakland.

Brandon Lowe homered for the third time in two days, snapping a scoreless tie in the sixth inning and helping the Rays take over sole possession of the first place in the AL East with their sixth victory in seven games. The New York Yankees, who were rained out at home, dropped a half-game behind in the standings.

Morton (8-0) extended his career-best winning streak to 11 games dating to Aug. 17, when he was with the Houston Astros. He allowed two hits to Marcus Semien and retired the last 14 batters he faced.

Stephen Piscotty ruined Tampa Bay's bid for a shutout, driving in Mark Canah with an RBI double and then scoring on Robbie Grossman's run-scoring single in the ninth.

Lowe hit a two-run shot off Tanner Anderson (0-1), who allowed two runs and three hits over 5 2/3 innings in his first big league start. Kevin Kiermaier and Ji-Man Choi also hit two-run homers in the win.

                        BRAVES 13, PIRATES 7

ATLANTA (AP) - Ronald Acuna Jr. hit a grand slam, Ozzie Albies added two homers and Atlanta beat Pittsburgh after Pirates starter Joe Musgrove was ejected in a first-inning fracas.

The Braves hit five homers, including two-run shots by Nick Markakis (four hits, four RBIs) and Freddie Freeman.

Starling Marte hit two homers and drove in four runs for Pittsburgh.

Atlanta has won four straight, while the Pirates are on a four-game skid.

Musgrove hit Josh Donaldson with a first-inning pitch. As Donaldson began walking to first base, he exchanged words with Musgrove, took a few steps toward the mound and then shoved catcher Elias Diaz, who intervened. The umpires huddled and announced ejections for Musgrove and Donaldson. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle also was ejected by home plate umpire Brian Gorman after arguing the decision to toss Musgrove.

Braves right-hander Kevin Gausman struggled despite being given a 5-1 lead in the second inning. Left-hander Sean Newcomb (1-0) relieved Gausman and allowed only one hit with six strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

Right-hander Alex McRae (0-2), who replaced Musgrove, allowed eight runs, six earned, while giving up three homers in 4 1/3 innings.

                        NATIONALS 12, WHITE SOX 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Trea Turner homered in the second straight game, Anibal Sanchez pitched into the seventh and Washington beat Chicago.

The game had a scary moment when a woman was struck by a foul ball off the bat of White Sox outfielder Eloy Jimenez. He hit a hard liner into the stands in the fourth inning just beyond Chicago's dugout on the third base side. The woman, sitting several rows from the field, was bleeding around the head area, and was covered with a towel. The team said she was taken to a hospital for evaluation. She was alert and communicative.

Jimenez put his hands on his helmet after seeing the ball go into the stands. Protective netting at Guaranteed Rate Field extends to the end of the dugouts.

Sanchez (2-6) gave up one run and four hits.

Adam Eaton had three hits, including an RBI single, and Kurt Suzuki added a grand slam during a six-run ninth and had five RBIs to help the Nationals win for the 12th time in 16 games.

Leury Garcia hit a solo homer for Chicago. Odrisamer Despaigne (0-1) went six innings and allowed three runs and seven hits.

                        ROCKIES 6, CUBS 5

DENVER (AP) - Ryan McMahon had a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning, and Colorado rallied for the win.

Ian Desmond hit a 486-foot homer, and Nolan Arenado and Charlie Blackmon also went deep for the Rockies, who trailed 4-0 early but still won their ninth straight at home.

Anthony Rizzo, Kyle Schwarber and David Bote homered for the Cubs.

Steve Cishek (1-3) gave up two hits in the ninth.

Scott Oberg (4-0) got the win.

Yu Darvish and Rockies starter German Marquez each allowed four runs in six innings.

“Playing for the Warriors is just like playing for Team USA. When you play in the Olympics, you don’t even enjoy it. There’s the anxiety of ‘We have to win. We can’t lose, or we can’t go back home.’ We talk about it on the Olympic team: ‘We can’t go back home without the gold medal, fellas. Got to lock in. Let’s lock in.’ Then once you win, it’s like, ‘Yeah, we got it, we can go back home. Yay, we won, but we were supposed to.’”

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                            13) Warriors 106, Raptors 105— Toronto had a 6-point lead and the ball with 3:00 left, but couldn’t finish the job; Game 6 is in Oakland Thursday. Warriors were +6 in 12:00 with Kevin Durant on the floor; seriously doubt he plays again in this series.

                            12) Dallas Keuchel made his ’19 debut Monday, pitching for Rome in the Class A South Atlantic League; he allowed a single, a walk with nine strikeouts in seven scoreless innings.

                            11) Braves 13, Pirates 7— Josh Donaldson got drilled by a pitch in the first inning, the ump threw the pitcher out, and a high-scoring game broke out. Marte and Albies both homered twice in this game.

                            10) Former Auburn, Akron coach Terry Bowden is heading to the Clemson football staff as a 63-year-old graduate assistant; his brother Tommy was Clemson’s head coach for 10 years.

Bowden is going for a Master’s Degree in athletic leadership at Clemson, and his position on the staff is an unpaid graduate internship.

                            9) Auburn 14, North Carolina 7— Tigers advance to the College World Series; they scored 13 runs in the top of the first inning. Rough way for the season to end for UNC.

                            8) Wednesday’s Rangers-Red Sox game in Boston moves up from 7:00 to 4:00 because Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final is Wednesday night in Boston.

                            7) Baseball stuff:
                            — Pirates put P Jordan Lyles (hamstring) on IL.
                            — Cardinals put P Adam Wainwright (hamsring) on IL
                            — Angels’ P Matt Harvey aggravated his back injury on a rehab start.

                            6) Rained in New York City Monday night, so Subway Series will have a day/night twinbill on Tuesday, with games at 1:05, 7:05.

                            5) Tony Parker retired after 18 seasons in the NBA; he won four NBA titles with the Spurs.

                            4) Read online yesterday that El Cortez and Four Queens are last places in Las Vegas that deal low-limit single deck blackjack that still pays 3-2 on naturals. Most single deck games pay 6-5 now.

                            3) College basketball transfer portal:
                            — Grad transfer Isaiah Moss bolts from Iowa to Kansas.
                            — Grad transfer Tevin Mack bolts from Alabama to Clemson.
                            — F Eugene Omoruyi bolts from Rutgers to Oregon.

                            2) Arizona 13, Phillies 8— This was seventh time since 1914 that a team led off a game with three straight home runs; last time was in 2017, also the Diamondbacks.

Phillies’ Jerad Eickhoff didn’t allow a HR in any of his first five starts (30 IP); he’s allowed at least one homer in six straight starts (13 HR in last 24 1/3 IP).

                            1) Field for the College World Series is set:
Bracket One: Arkansas, Florida State, Michigan, Texas Tech.
Bracket Two: Auburn, Louisville, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt

                            • LEADING OFF: Cruz HR streak, Subway Series doubleheader
                              June 10, 2019
                              By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Tuesday:

                              CRUZ CONTROL

Twins slugger Nelson Cruz has homered in four straight games, his streak coming soon after his return from a strained wrist that put him on the injured list for more than three weeks.

The 38-year-old Cruz is batting .279 with 11 home runs and 28 RBIs, helping Minnesota post the best record in the American League. He now faces Seattle in the series opener at Target Field.

                              TWO STOPS

The Subway Series gets underway with a day-night doubleheader at Yankee Stadium.

After a rainout Monday in the Bronx, the Mets flip-flopped their pitchers. Zack Wheeler (5-3) will start the opener for them against Masahiro Tanaka (3-5) in the first of four matchups this season between the crosstown rivals. Jason Vargas (2-3) goes in the nightcap versus fellow left-hander James Paxton (3-2) and the Yankees.

                              TAKE A SEAT

Braves third baseman Josh Donaldson and Pirates pitcher Joe Musgrove can expect a little time off after their bench-clearing confrontation. Major League Baseball will take a look at possible penalties following the fracas Monday night in Atlanta.

With two outs in the first inning, Musgrove's pitch grazed Donaldson's jersey. As Donaldson headed to first base, he exchanged words with Musgrove and then took a few steps toward the mound. Pirates catcher Elias Diaz intervened and Donaldson shoved him, and tempers flared.

Donaldson, Musgrove and Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle were ejected.

                              WHO'S NEXT?

Home runs are coming in bunches lately, with the Arizona and Philadelphia Phillies combining for an MLB-record 13 homers, including a team-record eight for the Diamondbacks.

Arizona started quickly, hitting three in a row to open Monday night's game at Philadelphia. Jarrod Dyson, Ketel Marte and David Peralta all connected off Jerad Eickhoff. Eduardo Escobar became the first Diamondback to homer from both sides of the plate in consecutive innings. Ildemaro Vargas homered twice and Alex Avila went deep for Arizona at Citizens Bank Park.

The Diamondbacks had hit six homers in a game six times in franchise history, the last coming June 1, 2018, against the Marlins.

The Phillies played long ball, too. Scott Kingery hit two of Philadelphia's five home runs. Jean Segura, Rhys Hoskins and Jay Bruce also went deep.

A day earlier, the Nationals hit four straight homers in the eighth inning at San Diego. Howie Kendrick, Trea Turner, Adam Eaton and Anthony Rendon tagged former Washington reliever Craig Stammen.
