  • LEADING OFF: Kluber's broken forearm checked, Ohtani eager
    May 1, 2019
    By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

    KLUBER HURT

Indians ace Corey Kluber will be re-evaluated in Cleveland, a day after a line drive in Miami broke his right forearm. There was no early word on how long the two-time AL Cy Young Award winner would be out.

The right-hander was put in a cast after being struck by Brian Anderson's liner. Kluber has a 5.80 ERA this season for the AL Central champions.

    ALL SET?

Shohei Ohtani says he's disappointed he won't return to the Los Angeles Angels' lineup this week. The AL Rookie of the Year says he's ready to play whenever the team allows it.

Ohtani had Tommy John surgery Oct. 1, and he is currently taking the final rehab steps for his return. Although he won't travel with the Angels for their series in Monterrey, Mexico, this weekend, he could be ready to play when the Angels visit Detroit on Tuesday.

The two-way star isn't expected to pitch this season while recovering from the elbow surgery, but is expected back in the batter's box soon.

    TRY AGAIN

Noah Syndergaard (1-3, 6.45 ERA) tries to get on track when the Mets finish a 10-game homestand with a 12:10 p.m. matinee against Cincinnati. Syndergaard has lost his last two outings and hasn't gone more than five innings in any of his past three, allowing 14 earned runs and 27 hits over 15 innings during that span. But he is 4-0 with a 2.67 ERA in five career starts vs. Cincinnati.

    SIMMERING

Jacob Rhame and the Triple-A Syracuse Mets finish a series against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs with a 10:35 a.m. game in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The matchup between the top affiliates from New York and Philadelphia got off to a testy start this week. As Rhame warmed up Monday night, the video board at the ballpark played a clip of Rhys Hoskins taking a 34-second trot around the bases after homering off the reliever last week at Citi Field. The homer came a day after Rhame buzzed Hoskins with a couple of pitches - Rhame was suspended two games and later sent to the minors.

        • Syndergaard does it all in Mets' 1-0 win over Reds
          May 2, 2019
          By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Noah Syndergaard became the first pitcher in 36 years to homer and throw a shutout in a 1-0 victory, lifting the New York Mets over the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday.

Syndergaard (2-3) struck out 10 and allowed four hits in his third career complete game, shaking off a sloppy start to the season with a do-it-all effort. He became the first Mets starter to get an out in the eighth this season, and the franchise's first starter ever to go yard in a 1-0 complete-game win.

Thor did his hammering in the third inning, driving a ball 407 feet to the opposite field in left-center off Tyler Mahle (0-4).

The previous pitcher to homer in a 1-0 complete-game win was the Los Angeles Dodgers' Bob Welch against the Reds on June 17, 1983, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

          NATIONALS 2, CARDINALS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Stephen Strasburg reached 1,500 strikeouts in fewer innings than any pitcher in major league history, and Washington beat St. Louis after a long rain delay to salvage the finale of a four-game series.

Despite the strong performance by Strasburg, the Nationals (13-17) fired pitching coach Derek Lilliquist after the game and replaced him with minor league pitching coordinator Paul Menhart. General manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement moments after the final out.

Strasburg (3-1) lasted 6 2/3 innings, giving up a run and six hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. He got opposing starter Dakota Hudson looking in the fifth for his eighth strikeout of the game and the 1,500th of his career - in 1,272 1/3 innings.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Boston left-hander Chris Sale held the previous mark, reaching 1,500 in 2017 after 1,290 innings.

Sean Doolittle struck out pinch-hitter Paul Goldschmidt with the bases loaded to end the eighth, then finished for his fourth save.

Hudson (2-2) allowed two runs, one earned, and four hits in six innings. Kolten Wong hit an RBI single and Yairo Munoz had three hits for St. Louis, which had won five straight.

          TWINS 8, ASTROS 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jose Berrios won his fourth straight start, Jason Castro homered off former battery mate Brad Peacock and drove in four runs, and AL-leading Minnesota beat Houston.

Backed by a six-run fourth from the Twins against Peacock (2-2), Berrios (5-1) finished seven smooth innings with seven hits and two runs allowed to push the Twins to their first season series victory over the Astros since 2013.

With 52 home runs in 29 games, the Twins have powered their way to or near the top of the league in several hitting categories.

WHITE SOX 6, RED SOX 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Nicky Delmonico hit a three-run homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Chicago over Boston.

It was Chicago's second straight walk-off win. Yonder Alonso had a two-run single in the nightcap of Wednesday's doubleheader against Baltimore for a 7-6 victory.

James McCann hit a two-run homer for the White Sox, who have won five of six.

Andrew Benintendi homered, J.D. Martinez had three hits and Rafael Devers drove in two runs as the Red Sox had their three-game winning streak snapped.

Chicago's rally in the ninth began with a one-out error by Devers on a grounder to third by Jose Rondon. Alonso followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Delmonico, who entered as a pinch hitter in the seventh, connected off Ryan Brasier (1-1) to win it.

Carson Fulmer (1-1) got two outs for the victory.

          ROCKIES 11, BREWERS 6

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Nolan Arenado, David Dahl and Raimel Tapia homered to help Colorado earn a four-game split with Milwaukee.

Arenado had three hits, including his ninth home run this season. Dahl finished a triple short of the cycle for the Rockies, who outscored the Brewers 22-10 in the final two games of the series.

Jon Gray (3-3) allowed seven runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings with nine strikeouts.

Freddy Peralta (1-1) fell behind 7-0 by the second inning and gave up nine runs - six earned - eight hits and three walks in four innings.

          RAYS 3, ROYALS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Brandon Lowe hit a two-run homer off Wily Peralta with two outs in the ninth inning, and Tampa Bay split a four-game series with Kansas City.

Peralta (2-2) walked Daniel Robertson on four pitches leading off the ninth, and Lowe connected with two outs for his seventh home run this season.

Adam Kolarek (2-1) got the final two outs of the eighth, and Diego Castillo struck out two in a perfect ninth for his fourth save in as many chances.

          PADRES 11, BRAVES 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Ian Kinsler and Wil Myers homered, Matt Strahm worked six innings and San Diego routed Atlanta to earn a split of a four-game series.

The Padres broke the game open with a five-run fifth, helped by an errant throw from Atlanta pitcher Mike Foltynewicz (0-1) that allowed four unearned runs to score. San Diego added five runs in the sixth - the first time since 2000 they have scored five runs in consecutive innings.

Strahm (1-2) took a shutout into the sixth before allowing a two-run single to Nick Markakis.

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…..

              13) Mets 1, Reds 0— Noah Syndergaard threw a complete game 1-0 shutout and hit a home run; this is only the 7th time this has EVER happened, and only second time since 1971. Here are the other six times this happened (thanks to Andrew Simon for the research):

              — Red Ruffing 8/13/32
              — Spud Chandler, 5/21/38
              — Early Wynn, 5/1/59
              — Jim Bunning, 5/5/65
              — Juan Pizarro, 9/16/71
              — Bob Welch, 6/17.83

              12) %age of runs scored on home runs the last four years:
              2016: 40.2%
              2017: 42.3%
              2018: 40.3%
              2019: 43.4% (thru Monday)

              Before 2016, the all-time record was 37.3%.

              11) Milwaukee Brewers have pitching issues; only once in their last 18 games has their starting pitcher finished the 6th inning; in half of those 18 games, the starter didn’t even finish the 5th inning, so there has been a tremendous strain on their bullpen.

              10) Pac-12 is joining the ACC, Big 14 in moving to 20 conference basketball games, starting with the 2020-21 season. This does two main things:
              — Creates more programming for the Pac-12 Network.
              — Decreases the opportunities for mid-majors to schedule quality non-league games.

Now, if the geniuses who run the Pac-12 would allow their network to be shown on DirecTV. then maybe the league could get the exposure it deserves.

              9) Golden State Warriors’ TV guy Jim Barnett was in the SF Giants’ TV booth during the game Wednesday night; he was saying how when he played in the NBA (Barnett had an 11-year career, scoring 11.7 ppg), he went through four pairs of sneakers per season.

Then he was saying that nowadays, Stephen Curry wears a different pair of sneakers every game. Must make the Warriors’ equipment manager’s job a real joy.

              8) Apparently the family of a Chinese student admitted to Stanford in 2017 paid $6.5M to try to guarantee her spot there. My question is, why? Stanford is an excellent school, but still……

              Why $6.5M? Why not $1M? Or $10M?

Is it that difficult to get into these schools? Or that lucrative to be an alumnus of one of these schools? Why not just save the $6.5M and go to a state school?

              7) Baseball injuries:
              — White Sox put P Carlos Rodon (edema in left arm) on IL.

              6) College basketball transfer portal:
              — Rutgers poaches Stony Brook grad transfer Akwasi Yeboah (16.7 ppg).

              5) Wednesday night was 7th time in Jacob deGrom’s career that he’s thrown 7+ scoreless innings without getting the win in that game.

              4) From the New York Post:

“Over last three fiscal years, Madison Square Garden paid CEO James Dolan $75.6M, according to a lawsuit filed on behalf of his shareholders. The average salary for CEO’s at similar companies is $17M a year.

The lawsuit claims Dolan is too focused on touring and recording as the frontman and guitarist for his band JD & the Straight Shot. In 2017 the band performed 50 times in six countries and 41 US cities.”

Lot fewer people would complain about Dolan if the Knicks didn’t suck every year. They’ve missed the playoffs the last six years, haven’t won an NBA title since 1973. NHL’s Rangers haven’t won the Stanley Cup since 1994; that is their only title since 1940- they missed the playoffs the last two years.

              3) There are 16 players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame who weren’t drafted.

              2) Sounds like Auburn is going to have a freshman QB starting this fall, which isn’t always good for a coach’s job security.

              1) Get well soon to Celtics’ GM Danny Ainge, who suffered a mild heart attack in Milwaukee Tuesday night. He received immediate medical attention and is expected to make a full recovery.

              • LEADING OFF: Vlad Jr. in Texas, MLB-best Twins visit Yankees
                May 2, 2019
                By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Friday:

                CHILD'S PLAY

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Blue Jays open a weekend series at Texas, where the touted rookie's Hall of Fame father was part of the 2010 Rangers team that won the AL championship and went to franchise's first World Series. During Guerrero's only season in Texas, the club's hitting coach was Clint Hurdle, now manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Hurdle, whose Pirates swept a two-game series at Texas this week, said the elder Guerrero approached him one August night that season and told the coach to meet him in the batting cage the next day.

''I'm always wondering, am I ever going to get to work with this guy? Because I hadn't,'' Hurdle said, laughing while recalling the story. ''He walks in with Junior and says, `My son, here, please work with my son.' ... And he walked out.'' Hurdle conducted about a 30-minute session with the 11-year-old Guerrero, concluding he was ''very advanced'' and hit the ball ''way too hard'' for his age.

''That was my experience working with Vlad,'' Hurdle said.

                HOUSE OF HORRORS

Minnesota (19-10) takes baseball's best record into the opener of a three-game series at Yankee Stadium, where the Twins are 14-50 since 2002 - including the postseason. James Paxton (3-2, 3.38 ERA) pitches for New York against Kyle Gibson (2-0, 4.88), who is 1-5 with a 6.86 ERA in eight starts against the Yankees.

                NL CENTRAL SHOWDOWN

An old rivalry is renewed when the NL-leading Cardinals (20-11) and Cubs meet for the first time this season at Wrigley Field. Jack Flaherty (3-1) gets the ball for St. Louis, which had won five straight before a rain-delayed 2-1 loss at Washington on Thursday. Flaherty has not allowed a run in 12 innings this season during day games. Kyle Hendricks (1-4) starts for the second-place Cubs, who are riding a four-game winning streak.

                  By Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Twins (10-3 last 13)

Believe it or not, Minnesota owns the top record in Major League Baseball at 19-10 after capturing three of four home games from Houston. Forgiving an 11-0 defeat on Tuesday night, the Twins limited the Astros to a total of four runs in the three wins, while blowing out the defending AL West champions, 8-2 on Thursday to finish their homestand at 6-1.

The Twins travel to the Bronx tonight to face the Yankees, who return home from a 6-3 west coast road swing. Kyle Gibson looks to remain hot on the mound for Minnesota as the right-hander is coming off a pair of victories over Baltimore in which he allowed three earned runs in 13 innings of work. The Twins have won four of Gibson’s five starts this season, while giving up one earned run in 11.2 innings in two starts against New York in 2018, although Minnesota lost both games.

Coldest team: Athletics (0-6 last six)

Oakland traveled out east last weekend owning a winning record at 14-13, but back-to-back sweeps at the hands of Toronto and Boston have put the A’s under .500. The offense hasn’t done much on this trip by not scoring more than four runs in any of the six losses, while giving up at least five runs in each of the past five defeats.

The A’s remain on the road for an interleague series with the Pirates at PNC Park this weekend. Pittsburgh is riding a brief two-game winning streak following an eight-game skid after grabbing a pair of games at Texas. Brett Anderson started the season with three straight wins for Oakland, but the southpaw is winless in his past three appearances, while suffering his worst outing of the season at Toronto his last time out by getting tagged for six runs and 10 hits in 4.1 innings of work.

Hottest pitcher: Tyler Glasnow, Rays (5-0, 1.75 ERA)

The Pirates traded Glasnow last season to Tampa Bay in exchange for Chris Archer and it seemed to be deal that would favor Pittsburgh in the short term. However, the Rays are the ones in the driver’s seat of this trade as the right-hander hasn’t yielded more than two earned runs in any of his six starts, while Tampa Bay is 5-1 in his appearances. Glasnow is 3-0 away from Tropicana Field, including a victory at Fenway Park over the Red Sox his last time out. Tampa Bay travels to Baltimore to face the Orioles as Glasnow tossed seven innings in a 4-2 triumph over the O’s as a -235 favorite in mid-April.

Coldest pitcher: Chris Sale, Red Sox (0-5, 6.30 ERA)

Amazingly, Boston is winless in six starts made by Sale in 2019, including three defeats as a favorite of -200 or higher. The numbers have actually improved for the lanky left-hander as Sale has given up four earned runs and struck out 18 in his last two starts, although the Sox lost at home to the Tigers and Rays. Sale heads back to Chicago to face his former team, the White Sox trying to break through the win column. Boston lost on a walk-off homer on Thursday to drop to 3-8 in series openers, while the Red Sox haven’t been much better in Game 2’s of a series off a loss by going 2-5.

Biggest OVER run: Mariners (8-1-1 last 10)

Don’t look at the scoreboard if you’re a fan of the Mariners recently as Seattle’s pitching has allowed 46 runs in the last four games. The M’s lost all four of those home contests to the Rangers and Cubs, including three defeats by 11 runs or more. Prior to this cold spell offensively, Seattle plated 19 runs in the first two games of its series against Texas. The M’s own a 9-2-1 mark to the OVER in the last 12 games away from T-Mobile Park as Seattle heads to Cleveland for a weekend series. Southpaw Yusei Kikuchi has drilled the OVER in three straight road starts, as the Mariners scored five runs or more in those contests.

Biggest UNDER run: Reds (13-3-1 last 17)

Cincinnati is by far the top UNDER team in baseball as the Reds have cashed only seven OVERS on the season. The Reds exchanged a pair of 1-0 contests against the Mets the last two days, while scoring three runs or less in five of the past six games. Cincinnati’s offense hasn’t been great this season, but the Reds have received quality pitching since a shaky start the opening week. Sonny Gray heads to the hill for Cincinnati against San Francisco as the Reds are 5-1 to the UNDER in the right-hander’s six starts. The offense has been inconsistent when Gray takes the ball as the Reds have scored five and seven runs in two wins, but have posted two runs or less in four losses.

Matchup to watch: Dodgers vs. Padres

It’s not a surprise that Los Angeles sits atop the NL West at 20-13, but San Diego is making a threat towards the top spot in the division at 18-14. The Padres started their road swing strong with a pair of victories at Washington, but blew a 6-0 lead in the finale in an extra innings loss and went on to lose two of the first three games at Atlanta. San Diego’s bats woke up on Thursday afternoon as the Padres scored five runs each in consecutive innings of an 11-2 rout of the Braves.

The storyline heading into tonight’s contest is Manny Machado facing his former team (albeit for the second half of 2018) for the first time since signing his mega-deal with the Padres. Southpaw Eric Lauer began the season with a masterful start against the Giants by tossing six scoreless innings, but he is winless in his past three outings. Lauer was sharp in his previous start against the Dodgers last September as a +240 underdog in L.A. by posting five innings and allowing one run in a 5-3 win.

The Dodgers lost two of three to the rival Giants earlier this week, including a pair of low-scoring one-run defeats. Los Angeles turns to Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw, who is unbeaten in three starts after beating Pittsburgh his last time out, 3-1. The Dodgers have won all seven starts made by Kershaw against the Padres dating back to the start of the 2016 season, including four wins at Petco Park.

Betcha didn’t know: The Braves were embarrassed on Thursday by the Padres (you probably knew that). Atlanta heads to Miami as Kevin Gausman has dominated the Marlins in two starts since getting traded from the Orioles last season. The Braves’ right-hander hasn’t given up a run in 12 innings against Miami, while the Marlins are 1-6 in their last seven games off a win after beating Cleveland on Wednesday.

                                STREAKING

James Paxton, New York Yankees (3-2, 3.38 ERA, $-81): After making the move to the Big Apple from Seattle, there was some uncertainty about how the lefthander would adjust to hitter-friendly Yankee Stadium, but Paxton is really starting to settle in.

Over his last three starts Paxton has been on fire, allowing just three runs while striking out 32 batters through 19.2 innings of work. A matter of fact, Paxton has actually pitched at his best at home this season, with just one run allowed through 19.2 innings. He will hope to continue his success today as the Yankees host the high-scoring Minnesota Twins.

                                SLUMPING

                                Sonny Gray, Cincinnati Reds (0-4, 3.64, $-227)
: Unlike most of the pitchers who make our slumping column, Gray has actually pitched pretty well despite his 0-4 start to the season. He has an impressive WHIP of 0.98 and opponent BA of .198 through six starts. Unfortunately the Reds haven't given him much run support; in Gray's four losses, Cincy has scored a total of four runs. Gray will go for his first win of the season tonight against the Giants who rank 29th in the majors in both runs per game with 3.16 and batting with .214.

                                WEATHER

Not too much to report in the area of weather for today's games, with wind possibly only playing a factor in (where else) the Windy City. There is a 10 mph wind breeze towards right field at Guaranteed Rate Field for the Sox game, while a 12 MPH wind is blowing towards home plate at Wrigley for the matchup between the Cardinals and Cubs.

                                ARENADO ON FIRE

Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado has been on fire lately, batting .355 with three doubles, five homers and 10 RBI over his last ten games. Today the Rockies will be facing off against the Diamondbacks and starting pitcher Robbie Ray. Arenado has batted .355 with three doubles and three homeruns in 31 at bats against Ray in his career. Arenado has -167 odds to get an RBI today and +230 odds to crank a homerun.

STARTING OFF ON THE WRONG FOOT

The Baltimore Orioles are just 10-44 in their last 54 opening games of a series. Today they begin their home series against the Tampa Bay Rays who are 8-1 in their previous nine Game 1s and have 5-0 Tyler Glasnow on the mound. The O's are understandily heavy underdogs in this one, at +203.

                                OVER BETTORS REJOICE

The Seattle Mariners have been the best Over bet in the majors this season going 22-9 O/U. They're also 5-0-1 to the Over in Yusei Kikuchi's last six starts. Tonight Kikuchi and the M's will face off against Shane Bieber and Cleveland. While Bieber has been a strong Under bet this season (2-4 O/U) the Over has cashed in five straight meetings between these two teams.
