        Rays of Hope

The first-place Tampa Bay Rays (18-9) look to stay hot on the road against the lowly Kansas City Royals (7-16) in Monday's series opener. The Rays lead the major leagues with a plus-45 run differential, while the Royals are 27th in the majors with a minus-23 in the category. Monday's battle with feature RHP Ryne Stanek up against RHP Brad Keller, and it's not as lopsided as the game appears on paper.

The Rays are 7-1 in the past eight Game 1s of a new series, while going 4-1 in the past five games on the road against a right-handed starter. The Rays are also 13-3 in their past 16 battles against American League Central Division clubs, while going 10-3 in Stanek's past 13 starts overall. They're also 9-3 in the past 12 starts by Stanek against teams with a losing overall record. However, they are just 4-10 in Stanek's past 14 on the road, and 0-9 in his past nine starts on a grass surface.

For the Royals, they're 4-1 in their past five at home vs. RHP, while going 6-1 in Keller's past seven home starts and 9-4 in the past 13 starts on grass. However, they're just 1-4 in the past five starts against a team with a winning record, and just 15-37 in the past 52 games against AL East foes. The Royals are also just 8-44 in the past 52 games against teams with a winning percentage over .600. The Royals are 1-10 in the past 11 meetings, while going 0-4 in the past four at home against Tampa. The under has hit in four of the past five meetings at Kauffman Stadium.

        Looking Ahead

        Monday, April 29

The A's and Red Sox will do battle at Fenway Park in Boston in Monday's series opener, and it's a great pitching matchup between RHP Frankie Montas and LHP Eduardo Rodriguez. The A's have dropped four games in a row on the road, and they're 0-6 in the past six against AL East clubs are getting swept north of the border against the Blue Jays over the weekend. Montas might put a stop to that, as the A's are 6-2 in his past eight road outings, 4-1 in his past five overall and 7-1 in his past eight starts against teams with a losing overall mark.

For the Red Sox, they're just 1-5 in the past six against AL West, and 2-5 in the past seven vs. RHP at home. However, like Montas, E-Rod could be the guy to snap the BoSox out of their funk. Boston is 20-6 in his past 26 starts at Fenway, and 21-5 in his past 26 starts against teams with an overall losing record. However, they are 1-4 in the past five starts by Rodriguez against AL West clubs.

The Dodgers and Giants battle in the Bay Area, and it's RHP Kenta Maeda and RHP Jeff Samardzija facing each other. The Dodgers are 1-4 in Maeda's past five road outings, while the Giants are 3-9 in Samardzija's past 12 starts overall and 1-4 in his past five against teams with a winning overall record. They're also a dismal 9-22 in the past 31 games overall vs. RHP. L.A. has cashed in six of the past seven against San Francisco, while the over is 5-2 in the past seven in the Bay Area, and 4-1 in the past five meetings overall.

        Weather Report

The weather forecast is super favorable for Monday's slate of MLB games. There is a 20 percent or less chance of precipitation across the board, and winds are 10 mph or less are all venues but one. At Oracle Park in San Francisco the Dodgers and Giants will see winds blowing out to left field from 9-12 mph, potentially helping 'over' bettors.

        Tuesday, April 30

The Indians and Marlins hook up in South Florida in a rematch of the 1997 World Series, but this time the venue is Marlins Park and not Hard Rock Stadium. The Indians will be heavily favored on the road with ace RHP Trevor Bauer squaring off against untested RHP Sandy Alcantara. However, Alcantara saw the Indians once already this season, yielding two runs - one earned - and four hits with four walks over five innings in a no-decision. The Marlins are 0-3 over his past three outings, and the under has cashed in eight of his past 10 starts overall. Cleveland enters play 4-0 in the past four interleague road games, and they're 5-2 in the past seven games on the road. They're also 5-1 in Bauer's past six in Game 1 of a new series. Cleveland is also 10-4 in the past 14 starts overall, including 7-2 in his past nine on the road, and 8-3 in the past 11 starts against teams with a losing record.

Dodgers RHP Walker Buehler takes the ball against LHP Drew Pomeranz in Game 2 of the series. L.A. is 5-2 in Buehler's past seven starts, and 4-1 in his past five against NL West foes. They're also 4-1 in his past five road outings against teams with a losing overall record. However, L.A. is just 4-9 in the past 13 tries vs. LHP, including 2-5 in their past seven on the road against southpaws. As far as the total is concerned, the under is 6-1-1 in the past eight starts by Buehler inside the division, while going 10-4-1 in his past 15 starts overall. The under is 5-0 in Pomeranz's past five outings overall, while going 23-10-2 in the past 35 vs. RHP.

        Weather Report

There will be a slight drizzle for the Tigers-Phillies interleague battle, but they should be able to get the game in without delay. The rains will be much heavier at Target Field, and the Astros-Twins game has the potential to be postponed with a 60 percent chance or greater of rain throughout the evening and overnight. If they do get the game in somehow, the Astros and Twins will face a stiff 10-13 mph wind blowing in from center field to home plate.

In Texas, the Pirates and Rangers will also faced a very stiff wind from 17-20 mph blowing in from right field to home plate working to keep scores down, especially hurting left-handed hitters trying to get the ball up in the air. The Orioles and White Sox will also face a potential postponement, as there is an 80 percent or greater chance of rain. If they see the field, they'll face gusty winds of 12-15 mph blowing into the face of the batters from left-center field.

For the Rays and Royals on Tuesday, the forecast also calls for heavy rain (80 percent chance of precipitation or greater), so look for this game to be postponed as well.

        Wednesday, May 1

Mariners LHP Marco Gonzales takes the ball against Cubs LHP Jon Lester in a southpaw battle at T-Mobile Park. The Mariners are 6-1 in Gonzales' seven starts this season, while the under is 3-1-1 in his past five outings. Lester has managed a 1-1 record with a 2.37 ERA and 19 strikeouts over 19 innings in four starts this season, and the 'over' is 3-1 in his four outings this season. In Lester's past four outings on the road, the Cubs are 3-1, too. He might pitch with a little extra effort in SoDo, too, as he was born in nearby Tacoma.

It's a righty-on-righty battle when the Blue Jays and Angels face each other at the Big A. RHP Marcus Stroman and RHP Felix Pena square off with the Angels looking for a little consistency after a rough start. Stroman enters with a 1-3 record, but an outstanding 1.43 ERA in his six outings, including just one earned run with 10 hits and eight walks allowed over the past 19 innings over his past three starts. In six starts the Toronto offense has produced a total of 15 runs of support, however. Pena is 0-1 with a 3.63 ERA across 22 1/3 innings in his five outings, with the Angels 0-2 in his past two starts. He did allow just two runs - one earned - with a season-high eight strikeouts over five innings in a no-decision against the Yankees last time out. The 'under' has cashed in four of his five outings this season, with the 'under' 5-1 in Stroman's six assignments.

            • LEADING OFF: Verlander 4-0 going into start vs. Twins
              April 28, 2019
              By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Monday:

              HOT START

Houston's Justin Verlander is 4-0 with a 2.61 ERA going into Monday night's start at Minnesota. He dominated the Twins at home last week, allowing one run and four hits in a season-high eight innings with eight strikeouts and no walks. Twins right-hander Jake Odorizzi (2-2) gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings when he won at Houston on April 22.

              OLD FOES

Right-hander Kenta Maeda (3-2) starts for the Los Angeles Dodgers in a series opener at San Francisco after giving up a season-high six earned runs against the Chicago Cubs in his last outing. Right-hander Jeff Samardzija (2-1) has lost four of five decisions in eight appearances against Los Angeles.

              HE'S BACK

Right-hander Michael Wacha (1-0) starts for St. Louis at Washington in the opener of a four-game series in his return from the 10-day injured list. Wacha missed one turn because of left knee patellar tendinitis. Left-hander Patrick Corbin (2-0) starts on five days' rest for the Nationals.

              SUCCESS STORY

Right-hander Tanner Roark (1-1) is 8-4 in 22 career starts against the Mets going into his start at New York against right-hander Zack Wheeler (2-2) in the opener of a four-game series.

                    STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                    STREAKING

Patrick Corbin, Washington Nationals (2-0, 2.48 ERA, $-15):
Corbin has settled in nicely with his new team, since signing a big contract this offseason. He has so far rewarded the Nationals with a quality start in five of his first five games. And he has been getting better with each start. Corbin has pitched to a 1.74 ERA and a 0.68 WHIP over his past three starts and he’ll look to stay hot when the Nats host the Cardinals tonight. Washington is currently a -144 favorite with a total of 8.5.

                    SLUMPING

Kenta Maeda, Los Angeles Dodgers (3-2, 5.20 ERA, $94):
The Dodgers right-hander has swapped good and bad starts this season, but with two of his last three falling in the bad category Maeda gets dubbed our Slumping Starter for today.

Maeda has seemed to battle his control all season, issuing 13 walks in his five starts, including seven over his past three. In those three games he owns a 6.75 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. Maeda will try to get back on track when the Dodgers begin a three-game set in San Francisco. The Dodgers are currently -154 road faves with a total of 7.5.

                    BIG UNDER MACHINE

The Reds continue to be an Under bettor’s dream. Excellent pitching with terrible hitting as evidenced by yesterday’s 5-2 loss to the Cardinals. With the loss the Under is now 20-6-1 in the Reds 27 games this season. Cincinnati ranks third in team ERA this season, while ranking dead last in batting average, so this trend seems sustainable for the time being. The Reds send Tanner Roark to the bump to counter the Mets Zack Wheeler. The total for tonight’s game in New York is currently 8.

                    • Odorizzi edges Verlander as Twins beat Astros 1-0
                      April 29, 2019
                      By The Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Jake Odorizzi pitched seven solid innings to outduel Justin Verlander, Ehire Adrianza homered off Houston's ace and the Minnesota Twins beat the Astros 1-0 on Monday night.

Odorizzi (3-2) gave up four hits while beating Houston for the second time in two starts. He walked one and struck out seven, and Minnesota won for the eighth time in 10 games. Blake Parker recorded his sixth save.

Adrianza's first homer of the season led off the third. He hit a towering, deep shot to the plaza in right field on a full count against Verlander (4-1), who allowed two hits, walked two and struck out seven over six innings.

Coming off a dominant sweep of Baltimore, the Twins faced Houston for the second time in a week. They also saw Verlander in the previous series, when he gave up one run and needed just 98 pitches to get through eight innings.

                      BREWERS 5, ROCKIES 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Struggling slugger Jesus Aguilar hit his first two homers of the season and Milwaukee beat Colorado with NL MVP Christian Yelich sidelined by lower back soreness.

Zach Davies allowed an unearned run in five 1/3 innings, and Milwaukee opened a 10-game homestand with a breakout game from its beefy first baseman.

Aguilar entered hitting .123 after accruing 35 homers and 108 RBIs last season. He had a three-run homer in the first and added a solo shot in the third, both off Kyle Freeland (2-4). Aguilar also singled in the eighth and had four RBIs.

Davies (3-0) allowed just three hits and lowered his ERA to 1.38. He struck out two and walked three. Alex Claudio, Jay Jackson and Donnie Hart combined to retire 11 of the final 12 hitters.

                      RED SOX 9, ATHLETICS 4

BOSTON (AP) - Xander Bogaerts hit a tying two-run double that sailed over the head of center fielder Ramon Laureano, who made a bad read during a six-run third inning.

Rookie Michael Chavis drove in three and Mookie Betts had three singles for Boston, which had lost two straight to AL East-leading Tampa Bay.

Ryan Brasier (1-0) got four outs and was credited with the victory after starter Eduardo Rodriguez failed to go five innings with Boston leading. Matt Barnes got the final two outs on two pitches for his second save after Oakland loaded the bases.

Jurickson Profar had a two-run single for Oakland, which lost its fourth straight. Frankie Montas (4-2) gave up seven runs, one earned, in 4 1/3 innings.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Harrison Bader homered to spark a six-run fifth inning as surging St. Louis rallied past Patrick Corbin and Washington in the opener of a four-game series.

Marcell Ozuna put the Cardinals ahead 4-3 with a two-run single. Jose Martinez had an RBI double, and Yadier Molina added a run-scoring single off Corbin (2-1), who took a 3-0 lead into the fifth.

Michael Wacha (2-0) went five innings after being activated from the 10-day injured list earlier in the day. The right-hander allowed three runs and four hits while striking out five.

Jordan Hicks pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his ninth save.

Rookie right-hander Jacob Webb recorded the final two outs for his first save, one day after his first win. Webb struck out pinch-hitter Wil Myers to end the game.

Nick Margevicius (2-3) allowed three runs, one earned, on four hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings.

NEW YORK (AP) - Jesse Winker homered off All-Star closer Edwin Diaz with two outs in the ninth inning, and Cincinnati beat New York after wasting a four-run lead.

Left-handed batters had been 0 for 15 this year against Diaz (0-1) before Winker drove a fastball over the right-center field fence for his career-high eighth home run, the most by a Reds player this season. Diaz was pitching for the third straight day for the first time this season.

Raisel Iglesias (1-3) pitched two innings, striking out his last four batters.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                          13) 76ers 94, Raptors 89- Kawhi Leonard was 13-24 from floor; rest of Toronto’s team was 20-67 (29.9%). Series is tied, 1-1.

                          12) Ben Simmons is a weird player; I think he’s one of the five best passers I’ve ever seen, but it almost seems like he defiantly refuses to become a shooting threat.

In this game, Simmons played 44:00, was 3-6 from floor. No foul shots, no 3’s. He had seven rebounds, five assists. Someone who has the ball as much as Simmons does takes six shots in 44:00? Very unusual.

                          11) Nuggets 121, Trailblazers 113— Jokic had 37 points, nine rebounds, six assists as Denver takes the first game of this series. Nuggets are 41-5 at home this season.

                          10) Today’s unusual stat from Dan Hayes: Max Kepler’s 10-pitch walk in the 1st inning vs Justin Verlander Monday night was the 76th time Verlander has thrown 10 pitches in a plate appearance among the 11,497 batters (0.6%) he has faced in his great career.

                          9) Tennessee basketball coach Rick Barnes parlayed his dalliance with UCLA into a 5-year, $26M contract extension with the Vols.

                          8) Texas Tech basketball coach Chris Beard signed a six-year contract that will pay him $4.575M annually, through the 2024-25 season. His annual salary is now 4th-highest in the country, behind John Calipari, Mike Krzyzewski and Barnes.

                          7) Baseball injuries:
                          — Giants put P Derek Holland (finger) on the IL.
                          — Braves put P Chad Sobotka (abdomen) on the IL.
                          — A’s put 1B/OF Mark Canha (wrist) on the IL.
                          — Brewers put P Aaron Wilkerson (foot) on the IL.

                          6) New England Patriots ranked 25th in NFL LY with a 53.8% touchback rate on kickoffs, so it is possible that the punter they traded up to draft in the 5th round will also be used as a kickoff guy, seeing how PK Stephen Gostkowski is 35 now. Field position is important.

                          5) James Harden led the NBA in foul shots attempted in five of the last seven years, and finished 2nd/3rd the other two seasons.

                          4) Blues 4, Stars 3— St Louis wins a road game, is up 2-1 in this series.

                          3) Giants 3, Dodgers 2— Evan Longoria’s bases loaded double in the 7th inning was the game-winning hit.

                          2) Reds 5, Mets 4— Jesse Winker’s 9th-inning homer decided this one. It was the first hit that Mets’ closer Edwin Diaz allowed to a lefty batter this season.

                          1) I’d be curious to know how much NFL teams value if a prospect played for a winning program in college. I’m not 100% sold that playing on a winning team is that big a deal; sometimes your deficiencies can be hidden if you’re surrounded by superior athletes.

But I’d be more interested in how NFL teams feel than how I think about it.
