RHP Domingo German takes the ball for the Yankees, and New York has posted a 7-3 record over his past 10 outings. The O's counter with RHP David Hess, who tossed 6 1/3 hitless innings with one walk and eight strikeouts in his win in Toronto on April 1.

RHP Max Scherzer and RHP Zack Wheeler work against each other in an attractive pitching matchup between the Nationals and Mets on Sunday. The Nats are 38-15 in Scherzer's past 53 division starts, and 37-16 in his past 53 outings on the road. The Mets are 6-1 in Wheeler's past seven home outings, and 11-3 in his past 14 starts overall. The Nats are 5-0 in Scherzer's past five road outings against the Mets, while the Mets are 2-6 in Wheeler's past eight home outings against Washington.

The Dodgers roll out LHP Julio Urias for the Sunday night game against RHP Chad Bettis and the Rockies. L.A. has picked up five wins in the past seven road outings by Urias, although they're just 2-5 in his past seven starts against divisional foes. The Rockies hope Bettis can be the stopper to their losing ways. They entered Friday's game just 1-5 in the past six overall. While they're 2-5 in the past seven against southpaws, they're 18-7 in the past 25 home starts by Bettis. However, they're also 1-6 in his past seven tries against teams with a winning overall mark. The 'over' is 7-3-1 in the past 11 starts by Bettis against L.A.

      Weather Report

The biggest trouble spot on Sunday's card appears to be on the south side of Chicago, as the Mariners and White Sox will be facing rain chances of 40 percent, which could delay the start of their game at Guaranteed Rate Field. It won't be a steady shield of rain, however, and the game should get in. The winds will be blowing out of center field into the fact of the batters at a 7-10 mph clip.

In St. Louis, rain won't be the issue, but the Padres and Cardinals will face a jetstream of 13-16 mph blowing out to the left-center field power alley, so watch the 'over' there. The Sunday night game between the Dodgers and Rockies will be played as scheduled, with a slight wind blowing left to right and temperatures around 70 degrees with no precipitation in the forecast. Enjoy!

            • Red Sox head to home opener with win after 3-8 trip
              April 7, 2019
              By The Associated Press

PHOENIX (AP) Mitch Moreland homered off Merrill Kelly on the first pitch of the seventh inning, and the World Series champion Boston Red Sox ended an awful opening trip with a 1-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Boston went 3-8 against Seattle, Oakland and Arizona, its worst start since losing nine of 11 in 2011. The Red Sox host Toronto on Tuesday, their first game at Fenway Park since winning the World Series at Dodger Stadium last October.

Hector Velazquez, Brandon Workman, Marcus Walden (1-0), Matt Barnes and Ryan Brasier combined on a three-hitter. Walden got six outs for his first major league victory and Brasier retired Adam Jones on a game-ending groundout with a runner on second.

              YANKEES 15, ORIOLES 3

BALTIMORE (AP) - Gary Sanchez hit three of the Yankees' seven home runs, their most on the road since 1961, and New York completed a three-game sweep to move back above .500 at 5-4.

Clint Frazier homered twice and had four hits, and Austin Romine and Gleyber Torres also went deep. New York's first 18 runs of the series scored on homers, and the Yankees hit 14 over the three games.

Domingo German (2-0) gave up two runs, one hit and two walks in six-plus innings, and David Hess (1-1) allowed four runs and five hits in five innings.

Chris Davis was 0 for 4 and is hitless in 44 at-bats since Sept. 14, two shy of the major league record for a position player set by the Los Angeles Dodgers' Eugenio Velez in 2011.

              ANGELS 7, RANGERS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Mike Trout homered for the fourth straight game and Los Angeles won after waiting out a five-minute delay caused by a swarm of bees in the fifth.

Trout hit five home runs in the four-game series, going 6 for 11 with nine RBIs. He hit a two-run drive off Kyle Bird in the sixth inning for a 6-2 lead.

Justin Anderson (2-0) threw a scoreless inning in relief. Shelby Miller (0-1) gave up four runs, four hits and three walks in two innings.

              RAYS 3, GIANTS 0

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash moved left-handed reliever Adam Kolarek to first base in a piece of matchup strategy, and Tampa Bay opened with three straight series wins for the first time.

Kolarek pitched a perfect sixth inning to protect a 2-0 lead and moved to first base with a man on in the seventh when righty Chaz Roe reliever to strike out lefty-swinging Brandon Belt. Kolarek returned to the mound, gave up a single and was replaced for good by Diego Castillo.

Yandy Diaz homered on the second pitch of the game from Drew Pomeranz (0-1), and Yonny Chirinos (2-0) allowed two hits in five innings. Jose Alvarado pitched around a hit and a walk in the ninth for his fourth save.

              BREWERS 4, CUBS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Christian Yelich hit his fifth homer this season and 100th of his career, a drive off Kyle Hendricks (0-2), Yelich had three RBIs, and Josh Hader struck out three over 2 2/3 perfect innings for his fifth save as Milwaukee won for the seventh time in eight games.

Chicago lost for the seventh time in eight games, dropping to 2-7.

Zach Davies (1-0) allowed a pair of unearned runs in 5 2/3 innings. The Brewers have won 15 of their last 16 regular season series dating to last year.

              PHILLIES 2, TWINS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Rhys Hoskins hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning off Jose Berrios (1-1), and Philadelphia improved to 6-2.

Zach Eflin (2-0) allowed a leadoff homer to Max Kepler and five singles, striking out five, and Hector Neris tossed a perfect ninth for his first save since last Sept. 18.

Phillies left fielder Andrew McCutchen made a perfect one-hop throw to the plate to prevent Marwin Gonzalez from scoring on Ehire Adrianza's single in the third.

              INDIANS 3, BLUE JAYS 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Mike Clevinger (1-0) struck out 10 and allowed one hit over five scoreless innings, then left with upper back tightness, as Cleveland completed a four-game sweep.

Indians pitchers struck out 16, raising their three-game total to 57. Brad Hand got five outs for his fourth save, completing a three-hitter.

Toronto dropped to 3-8 and has struck out a major league-leading 111 times.

Carlos Santana had an RBI double in a two-run first that included Tyler Naquin's run-scoring single. Jose Ramirez added an RBI double in the fifth.

              TIGERS 3, ROYALS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Tyson Ross (1-1) allowed one run and five hits over seven innings in his debut at Comerica Park debut, the last current ballpark he hadn't pitched in, and Detroit won its fifth straight.

Rookie Christin Stewart drove in two runs off Brad Keller (1-1) to help the Tigers complete a three-game sweep. Shane Greene got three outs and has saves in all seven Tigers victories. Center fielder Niko Goodrum ended the game with a diving catch of Hunter Dozier's liner with a man on.

Kansas City has lost six straight. Whit Merrifield extended his hitting streak to 28 games dating to last season.

              NATIONALS 12, METS 9

NEW YORK (AP) - Max Scherzer (1-2) allowed four runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts, no walks and two hit batters, and he also singled in the game's first run.

Zack Wheeler (0-1) gave up seven runs, four hits and a career-high seven walks in 4 2/3 innings.

              BRAVES 4, MARLINS 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Dansby Swanson hit a game-ending single off Adam Conley (0-2) against a five-man infield after Ronald Acuna Jr. reached on a catcher's catcher's interference call on Chad Wallach after his apparent double-play grounder.

Pinch-hitter Curtis Granderson hit a tying homer in the ninth off Arodys Vizcaino (1-0).

Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer off Caleb Smith in the first inning.

              PIRATES 7, REDS 5

PITTSBURGH (AP) - A charged-up Yasiel Puig barreled into a bunch of Pirates during a bench-clearing fracas and was among five ejections.

Derek Dietrich stood in the batter's box to watch the first of his two homers, a 436-foot second-inning drive that bounced into the Allegheny River, and two innings later Chris Archer threw his first pitch behind Dietrich's waist. Plate umpire Jeff Kellogg warned both benches and new Reds manager David Bell jogged from the dugout to the infield, arguing Archer should've been ejected.

Tempers quickly escalated. The excitable Puig, in his first season with the Reds, grabbed Pirates bench coach Tom Prince and tried to put the 54-year-old former catcher in a headlock. Puig, Bell and Reds pitcher Amir Garrett were ejected, as were Pirates pitchers Keone Kela and Felipe Vazquez.

Archer (1-0) allowed three runs and five hits in six innings.

Josh Bell hit a 474-foot home run off Anthony DeSclafini (0-1) in the fourth that cleared the batter's eye in center.

              ASTROS 9, ATHLETICS 8

HOUSTON (AP) - Jose Altuve drew a four-pitch walk from Blake Treinen (0-1) with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth, giving Houston a three-game sweep.

Roberto Osuna (1-0) struck out one in a perfect ninth.

              MARINERS 12, WHITE SOX 5

CHICAGO (AP) - Daniel Vogelbach homered twice, hit a bases-clearing double and set a career high with six RBIs as Seattle improved its best start to 9-2.

Edwin Encarnacion had a two-run homer and three hits for the Mariners.

Wade LeBlanc (2-0) allowed six runs and six hits in six innings. Ivan Nova (0-1) gave up seven runs and seven hits in 2 1/3 innings.

              CARDINALS 4, PADRES 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Adam Wainwright (1-0) gave up one run and five hits in six innings, struck out nine and didn't issue a walk while throwing 100 pitches.

Jordan Hicks got four outs for his first save.

Paul DeJong hit a two-run double in the fourth off Matt Strahm (0-2).

More very early over/under NFL win totals:

                  — Dolphins 5, under -$120

                  — Vikings 9

                  — Patriots 11, under -$115

                  — Saints 10.5, over -$120

                  — Giants 6

                  — Jets 7, over -$115

                  **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend……

                  13) A gambler at the MGM in Las Vegas had $96,000 on the money line with Virginia Saturday night; hope the guy went to church to give thanks Sunday. His $96K ticket at -$250 paid him a handsome $38,400 for two hours of stress.

                  12) How is it possible that ESPN’s Sunday Night baseball hadn’t been in Denver since 2001? Maybe they should move games around more; Colorado games are fun to watch.

                  11) Coaching carousel:
                  — Arkansas hires Nevada coach Eric Musselman- when a team starts five seniors, its a good time for the coach to re-locate.
                  — Virginia Tech hired Wofford coach Mike Young.

                  10) UCLA fired basketball coach Steve Alford on New Year’s Eve; you’d think they’d have hired a replacement by now, seeing how it is April 8th. They’ve butchered this coaching hire in epic fashion; would be they go for an alum like Earl Watson?

                  9) Texas Tech fired its football coach after last season; the guy winds up getting hired as head coach by the Arizona Cardinals. Four months later, Tech makes the Final Four for the first time; with big $$$ johs like UCLA/LSU open or likely to be open, will Tech be able to keep Chris Beard?

                  8) Pirates 7, Reds 5— Derek Dietrich homered his first time up for the Reds in this game, lingering at the plate a little to admire it. His second time up? Chris Archer throws the first pitch behind him, clearing both benches in an exchange that was a little more volatile than usual baseball dust-ups.

Five players get thrown out, but not Archer, the guy who started everything by throwing behind the batter. As my high school chemistry teacher often said, that was nonsensical.

Dietrich hit a second homer later in the game.

                  7) Baseball injuries:
                  — Braves put C Brian McCann (hamstring) on the IL.
                  — Rangers put 1B Ronald Guzman (hamstring) on the IL.

                  6) Purdue G Carsen Edwards is entering the NBA Draft, after scoring 34.8 ppg in four NCAA tournament games. Will be curious to see how his game translates to the NBA.

                  5) Pretty big week for Jim Nantz; he does the national title game in Minneapolis tonight, then its off to Augusta for The Masters on Thursday.

                  4) Golf is hard; Jordan Spieth shot a 42 on the front nine in San Antonio Saturday, then he played the back nine in 31. Neither one of those happens much.

                  3) Minnesota Vikings signed QB Sean Mannion to back up Kirk Cousins; Mannion had been with the Rams the last couple years, but LA signed Blake Bortles as a backup this winter.

                  2) Rockets 149, Suns 113— Houston was 27-57 behind the arc in this game, setting the all-time record for 3-pointers in an NBA game.

                  1) Today would’ve been Jim (Catfish) Hunter’s 73rd birthday; he was my boyhood idol, a great pitcher who helped the A’s win three World Series. Threw a perfect game, won 224 games, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1987. He even knocked in three of the four runs Oakland scored the night he threw his perfect game. Hell of a big game pitcher.

                          Motorin'
The Detroit Tigers weren't expected to do much, but after 10 games they find themselves perched atop the American League Central Division by a half-game over the Cleveland Indians. The two sides will square off at Comerica in the Motor City on Tuesday afternoon to kick off a three-game set. If the Tigers are going to have any success they'll need to figure out a way to solve their nemesis, the Indians.

The Indians will roll out Corey Kluber, and the Tribe are 27-9 in his past 36 starts against American League Central Division foes. A big reason Cleveland has been success is their dominance inside the division, going 82-37 in their past 119 games against AL Central foes. However, the Tribe is 1-5 in the past six starts by Kluber on the road dating back to last summer. Cleveland is also a poor 1-5 in the past six road outings against right-handed starting pitchers. The Tigers are 5-0 in their past five vs. RHP, although they're a dismal 6-15 in Jordan Zimmermann's past 21 home starts and 1-7 in his past eight tries at home against teams with a winning overall mark.

In this series, the Indians are 11-4 in the past 15 trips to Motown, while going 43-17 in the past 60 meetings overall. They have won five straight starts by Kluber against the Tigers, and they're 5-1 in his past six road outings at Comerica. The Tigers, on the other hand, are 0-6 in Zimmermann's past six tries against Cleveland, and 0-4 in his past four home starts by Zimmermann against their division rivals. The over is 3-0-1 in the past four meetings between these two sides, too.

                          Looking Ahead

                          Monday, April 8

Cubs LHP Jon Lester host the surprising Bucs, who are 5-3 out of the gate, two games off the pace behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers. Melky Cabrera knows him well, going 14-for-51 (.275) with two doubles, a homer and four RBI in their history against each other. Francisco Cervelli has also had some limited success against the southpaw, going 10-for-38 (.263) with a double, two homers and 10 RBI. The rest of the current roster combined has just 13 RBI against Lester in 174 at-bats.

The Bucs have won four straight inside the NL Central, and they're 10-4 in the past 14 starts on the road by Jameson Taillon. They're also 7-3 in his past 10 starts, and 8-3 in the past 11 starts by Taillon against divisional foes. The Cubbies have won 38 of Lester's past 52 home starts, and they're 18-8 in his past 26 at Wrigley Field against teams with a winning record. Chicago has also won 38 of his past 56 starts against NL Central opponents.

The Padres and Giants square off at AT&T Park in San Francisco to kick off a new series on Monday. San Francisco hopes to have a little more offense than they did in their four-game set to open the season in San Diego when they lost three of the first four games while totaling just five runs of support for their pitchers. The good news is that the Giants yielded just 11 runs in the four-game set, showing off solid pitching.

LHP Eric Lauer takes the ball, and the Padres are 5-2 in his past seven starts. He'll be up against LHP Madison Bumgarner. The Giants are 1-4 in MadBum's past five starts against NL West foes, while going 1-5 in his past six against teams with a winning record. The Giants have really struggled inside the NL West, too, going just 2-9 in the past 11 inside the division. They're also 2-6 in the past eight vs. LHP, too. The 'under' has cashed in five straight meetings, and is 4-1 in the past five meetings in San Francisco, too. There are a lot of batters who have some ugly numbers against MadBum. Austin Hedges and Eric Hosmer are each 0-for-10 against the southpaw, while Manny Machado is 2-for-11 (.182) in their limited dealings. The player with the most history against Bumgarner, Wil Myers, is 7-for-40 (.175) with two doubles, two homers and 11 strikeouts. The only batter with any measure of success against the San Francisco southpaw is Hunter Renfroe, who is 5-for-13 (.385) with two doubles, two homers and four RBI.

                          Weather Report
The weather looks good across the board, with the exception of San Francisco. The precipitation chances are 40 percent or less until 8 p.m. PDT local time before picking up to around 50 percent. It wouldn't be surprising to see the tarpaulin come out for the Padres-Giants battle.

                          Tuesday, April 9
Toronto and Boston kick off a set at Fenway Park on Tuesday evening. Blue Jays RHP Matt Shoemaker will make his first start in Fenway Park in a Jays uniform. Red Sox LHP Chris Sale knows the Jays well, though, and Boston is 6-1 in his past seven against AL East foes, and 5-2 in his past seven tries against Toronto. The Blue Jays are 9-27 in their past 36 against the Red Sox, and 1-10 in their past 11 trips to Fenway Park. Perhaps this will snap Sale into form, as he is an uncharacteristic 0-2 with an 8.00 ERA and 1.44 WHIP through two outings.

The middle game of the Nationals-Phillies seres is a tasty pitching matchup with RHP Stephen Strasburg and RHP Aaron Nola dueling. For what it's worth, the Nationals are 9-0 in Strasburg's past nine outings on a Tuesday. More importantly, they're 39-12 in his past 51 starts on the road. The Phillies are 22-9 in Nola's past 31 starts, and 13-5 in his past 18 inside the National League East. In this series, it has been Strasburg dominating the Phils, so it will be interesting to see if Bryce Harper can tip the scales. The Nats are 17-4 in his past 21 aginst the Phillies, and 7-1 in his past eight starts at Citizens Bank Park. The Phils are 5-11 in Nola's past 16 tries vs. Washington, and 2-6 in his past eight at home. The under is also 6-0 in Strasburg's past six road starts against the Phils, while going 7-2 in Nola's past nine against the Nats.

                          Weather Report
The wind will be blowing out at Great American Ball Park for the Miami Marlins-Cincinnati Reds game, with a jetstream blowing 10-13 mph to the right-center power alley. It will be the opposite for the Oakland-Baltimore gaem blowing into the faces of the batters from the left-center field power alley at a 11-14 mph clip. The wind will be howling in the Golden State, too, with the wind blowing out to McCovey Cove at 17-21 mph for the game between the Padres-Giants. The winds will be gusting 15-18 mph for the Brewers-Angels interleague contest, but it will be blowing more from third base to third base, favoring left-handed batters.

As far as rain, watch Queens for the interleague battle between the Twins and Mets. The forecast calls for a 40 percent chance of rain, tapering off by 10 p.m. EDT, so they should be able to get it in.
