            STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

            STREAKING

Gerrit Cole, Houston Astros (0-1, 1.50 ERA, $-138): The Astros have gotten off to a bit of a slow start, but that hasn’t been Cole’s fault. The right-hander picked up right where he left off last season, allowing just one earned run on five hits, while striking out 10 in his season opener.

His first start against the Rays was another example of his ability to pitch well on the road. Cole owned a 2.77 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP on the road in 2018. He’s on the road once again tonight when the Astros visit the Rangers. Houston is a hefty -230 favorite with a total of 9.

            SLUMPING

Miles Mikolas, St. Louis Cardinals (0-1, 9.00 ERA, $-100): Mikolas was a remarkable story last year, having a breakout campaign in his age-30 season. The Cardinals rewarded him in the offseason with a contract extension, but 2019 did not get off to a great start.

Mikolas got roughed up for five runs on five hits (including three dingers!) in his first start of the season against the Brewers. Today he and the Cardinals visit the Pirates as slight +100 road dogs and a total of 7.

Phils lose for 1st time, Robinson forces in game-ending run
                April 3, 2019
                By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) David Robertson forced home the game-ending run with a ninth-inning walk to Jake Noll, a rookie without a hit in his two previous major league at-bats, and the Nationals beat the previously unbeaten Phillies 9-8 Wednesday as Washington's fans again booed Bryce Harper.

Noll was sent to the minors after the game to make room for utilityman Howie Kendrick to come off the injured list Thursday.

Robertson (0-1) gave up a leadoff single to Anthony Rendon, then walked three batters in a row.

Nationals closer Sean Doolittle (2-0) worked the ninth.

Philadelphia fell to 4-1 - it had been the last team in the majors without a loss. Making his second appearance against his former team since signing a $330 million, 13-year deal with the Phillies, Harper hit a pair of singles and was walked three times, twice intentionally.

                PADRES 4, DIAMONDBACKS 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Manny Machado hit his first home run for San Diego, a two-run drive in the seventh off former Padres farmhand Matt Andriese. Machado is hitting .240 with three RBIs in his first seven games after signing a $300 million, 10-year contract.

Joey Lucchesi (2-0) extended his scoreless innings streak to 10 1/3 innings to start the season as the Padres avoided a three-game sweep. Lucchesi allowed four hits in five innings, struck out six and walked one.

Backup catcher Francisco Mejia had a go-ahead pinch-hit double in the fifth off Robbie Ray (0-1).

                METS 6, MARLINS 4

MIAMI (AP) - NL Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom struck out a career-high 14 in seven shutout innings, hit a home run and ended his streak of five consecutive losses to Miami, helping the New York Mets complete a three-game sweep.

DeGrom (2-0) allowed three hits and walked one.

New York took a 6-0 lead into the ninth, but the Marlins eventually brought the tying run to the plate. Edwin Diaz entered and got his third save, and Mets headed back for their home opener at Citi Field on Thursday against Washington with a 5-1 record.

DeGrom extended the NL's longest active scoreless streak to 26 innings. An infielder at Stetson University before he was converted into a pitcher, deGrom pulled the first pitch from Trevor Richards (0-1) in the third inning into the Mets' bullpen for his second career home run.

                BRAVES 6, CUBS 4

ATLANTA (AP) - Johan Camargo hit a go-ahead, three-run double as Atlanta took advantage of five walks by Cubs relievers in the eighth inning.

It was Chicago's third blown save this season and third loss by a relief pitcher in five games. Steve Cishek (0-1) walked Atlanta's first three batters in the eighth before manager Joe Maddon brought in left-hander Randy Rosario. After taking a ball, Camargo lined the three-run double over Albert Almora Jr. in center field for a 5-4 lead.

Luke Jackson (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth. Arodys Vizcaino walked Anthony Rizzo with one out in the ninth before striking out Javier Baez and Kyle Schwarber for his first save.

                RANGERS 4, ASTROS 0

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Mike Minor pitched seven sharp innings and Texas topped the frustrated Astros, whose starter Gerrit Cole immediately after his final out went to the plate umpire who earlier ejected Houston's manager and hitting coach for arguing balls and strikes.

Cole (0-2) struck out nine while allowing three runs over six innings. After fielding Hunter Pence's comebacker and throwing to first for an inning-ending out on his 105th pitch, the right-hander went up to ump Ron Kulpa, put his glove over his mouth and was clearly agitated during an extended conversation.

Minor (1-1), who didn't make it out of the fifth inning in his first career opening-day start last Thursday, gave up five hits.

                CARDINALS 5, PIRATES 4, 10 INNINGS

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Tyler O'Neill capped another St. Louis rally by driving in Kolten Wong for the go-ahead run in the 10th inning against Pittsburgh.

Two days after coming back from four runs down to beat the Pirates in Pittsburgh's home opener, St. Louis again took advantage of another wobbly performance by the Pirates' bullpen.

Harrison Bader hit a two-run homer off Keone Kela in the eighth to tie the game at 3. Wong led off the 10th with a triple against Nick Burdi (0-1) and scored when O'Neill followed two batters later with a sharp single.

John Gant (2-0) worked a scoreless ninth to pick up the win. Dakota Hudson collected his first major league save when he stranded the tying run at third in the 10th.

                BREWERS 1, REDS 0

CINCINNATI (AP) - Freddy Peralta (1-0) threw two-hit ball for a career-high eight innings, and Manny Pina singled home a run for Milwaukee's only hit off Luis Castillo (0-1). The defending NL champions completed a three-game sweep and improved to 6-1.

Alex Wilson gave up a walk and a single in the ninth while getting his first save.

Reds starting outfielders Jesse Winker, Matt Kemp and Scott Schebler fell to a combined 1 for 42 this season.

                TIGERS 2, YANKEES 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Matthew Boyd (1-1) junk-balled his way to a career-high 13 strikeouts and Gordon Beckham hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the eighth off Chad Green (0-1), his first homer since Aug. 28, 2016

The Yankees struck out 18 times, a team record for a nine-inning game, and dropped to 2-4 - against Baltimore and the Tigers, who combined for 213 losses. Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki strained his left calf and will become New York's major league-high 11th player on the injured list.

Boyd walked three and allowed five hits in 6 1/3 innings. Shane Greene got his fourth save with a perfect ninth, completing a five-hitter.

                ROCKIES 1, RAYS 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Chris Iannetta homered off Chad Roe (0-1) in the 11th inning, and Colorado stopped a four-game losing streak. Iannetta had the Rockies' first hit since Raimel Tapia's leadoff single in the fifth and second run in 41 innings.

Wade Davis (1-0) got four outs to complete a six-hitter.

Tampa Bay, which entered with a five-game winning streak, gave up one run or none for a team-record fifth straight game. The Rays have yielded 11 runs in seven games.

                WHITE SOX 8, INDIANS 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Jose Abreu drove in three runs, Leury Garcia had four hits, and Yoan Mocada hit a two-run homer in the eighth.

Corey Kluber (0-2), who had won nine straight decisions over Chicago since July 24, 2015, allowed six runs - four earned - eight hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings. The two-time AL Cy Young Award winner didn't get his second loss in 2018 until his eighth start.

Carlos Rodon (1-1) gave up an unearned run and two hits over six innings.

Hanley Ramirez connected for a two-run homer in the ninth. He has both of Cleveland's homers this season.

                TWINS 7, ROYALS 6

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Eddie Rosario hit a go-ahead single in the ninth off Wily Peralta (0-1),

Whit Merrifield extended his hitting streak to 25 games, tied with George Brett and Mike Sweeney for third longest by a Royals player. Alex Gordon homered and drove in four runs.

Trevor May (1-0) threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings, and Blake Parker earned his second save in as many days.

                BLUE JAYS 5, ORIOLES 3

TORONTO (AP) - Randal Grichuk took over from traded Kevin Pillar in center and hit a pair of solo home runs, a day after agreeing to a $52 million, five-year contract.

Matt Shoemaker (2-0) allowed two hits in seven shutout innings to help prevent a three-game sweep, and Ken Giles got two outs for his second save in as many chances.

Right-hander Nate Karns (0-1) opened for Baltimore. He allowed an unearned run and three hits in two innings.

                RED SOX 6, A'S 3

“It couldn’t have been handled any worse. Anytime you lose a close game, it’s a difficult time emotionally afterwards, but when you lose a home game at Lambeau Field in December, it’s really hard. And that hasn’t happened very often. I walked out of my press conference, and I’m thinking about the game, thinking about how our playoff shot was now minimal. That’s where my head was at. And when I was told Mark Murphy wanted to see me — and the messenger was cold and the energy was bad. Mark said it was an ugly loss, and it was time to make change. He said something about the offense and the special teams, and he didn’t think it was going to get any better. There was no emotion to it. That was hard.”

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

                    13) Was looking at an old picture of Ebbets Field in Brooklyn tonight; the dugouts there were a lot closer to the area behind home plate than they are now. I’m guessing dugouts were also much smaller then than they are now.

Which reminded me of an old story back when the Astros played in the Astrodome; someone told Houston’s owner that he could charge more money for seats behind the dugout, so that season, the Astrodome had the longest dugouts in major league history. Go figure.

                    12) Brewers 1, Reds 0— Memo to the Milwaukee analytics geniuses: This one is simple. Every time Freddy Peralta pitches, Manny Pina catches. Every time.

In 15 games with Pina behind the plate, batters have hit .168 vs Peralta.
In three games with other catchers, batters have hit .245 against him.

                    11) Nationals 9, Phillies 8— Jake Noll walked with the bases loaded to force in the winning run, handing the Phils their first loss, but he was sent to the minor leagues after the game, because Howie Kendrick comes off the DL tomorrow.

                    10) Last time the Phillies started a season 4-0? How about 1915. Wow.

                    9) Nuggets 113, Spurs 85— I’ve thought about picking NBA games on this site, but there are a lot of reasons why I don’t want to. Players taking games off when they’re not hurt is a big one.

Gregg Popovich got thrown out of this game 1:03 after it started, so obviously, the game didn’t mean much to him. Since the Spurs clinched a playoff spot last week, Popovich has been ejected twice in the Spurs’ last three games.

                    8) Coaching carousel:
                    — Texas A&M hired Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams
                    — Fairfield hired Rutgers assistant Jay Young as its new coach.

                    7) Fred Hoiberg is the new basketball coach at Nebraska; he was born in Lincoln.

His grandfather Jerry Bush coached the Cornhuskers in the late 50’s. Hoiberg’s other grandfather was a Sociology professor at Nebraska.

                    6) There are two basketball Hall of Fames; there is the Naismith Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA which includes all of basketball, and there is the College Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City.

No idea what goes into the selection process for either, but this is odd:
                    — Jerry Tarkanian is in the Naismith HOF, but not the college basketball HOF.
                    — Eddie Sutton is in the college basketball HOF, but not the Naismith HOF.

                    5) Virginia coach Tony Bennett banked a $250K bonus when the Cavaliers won their Sweet 16 game, and another $250K when Virginia made it to the Final Four.

                    4) Fantasy baseball is funny sometimes; guy in our league cut Hunter Renfroe this week, and rightfully so, he had only started one game this season, but same night Renfroe got cut, he gets the start against Arizona and hits two homers off of Zack Greinke. Go figure.

                    3) Colorado Rockies signed P German Marquez to a five-year, $43M contract extension.

Cubs signed IF David Bote to a 5-year, $15M extension.

                    2) Average salary for an NFL referee this season is scheduled to be $205,000. Pretty good part-time job.

                    1) Advance planning: Chicago White Sox’ home opener for Thursday afternoon was postponed at roughly noon Wednesday; it’ll be played Friday instead.

Likewise, the Cardinals’ home opener with San Diego tomorrow was also moved to Friday.

                                STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                                STREAKING

Brett Anderson, Oakland Athletics: (1-0, 0.00 ERA, $100):
The veteran southpaw still loves pitching in the massive dimensions of the Oakland Coliseum. Anderson is coming off pitching six shutout innings of three-hit ball in his first start of the season there. He now owns a 1.67 ERA and a 0.82 WHIP in his last seven starts there.

The competition gets a little tougher today against the Red Sox. The A’s are currently slight -105 home favorites with a total sitting at 8.

                                SLUMPING

Yu Darvish, Chicago Cubs (0-0, 10.12 ERA, $-160):
Darvish’s homecoming slash return to the mound certainly did not go as expected. The Japanese right-hander lasted just 2.2 innings in his first start since May 20th of last season, surrendering three runs on two hits and a jaw dropping seven walks.

Darvish will attempt to bounce back when he returns to the mound when the Cubs visit the Braves tonight. The Cubs are currently +100 underdogs with a total of 8.5 for this one.

                                PITCHER’S DUEL REMATCH

We get treated to a fantastic pitcher’s duel to kick off the day as Stephen Strasburg squares off against Noah Syndergaard when the Mets host the Nationals for their home opener. This is a rematch from just five days ago in which both starters got roughed up and will want to bounce back in a big way. What’s even crazier is the numbers for both starters. Both Strasburg and Syndergaard allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings pitched, in an eventual 11-8 Mets victory. New York is currently a -130 favorite this time around in a matchup oddsmakers expect the starters to return to form, setting the total at 6.5.

                                RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY

Two of today’s scheduled games have already been postponed due to rain. The White Sox have rescheduled their home opener against the Mariners to Friday, which was a scheduled off day for both teams.

The Cardinals also had to postpone their home opener against the Padres and the game will also be made up on Friday. Make sure to check out our MLB Weather page for the latest forecasts at the ball parks all across the country.

                                KEEPING A LOW PROFILE

The Tigers are quietly having a nice little start to the season at 4-3, but what we really want to take note of is the team they are shaping up to be. And that is a wonderful Under bet. The Under has cashed in all seven of their games to start the season thanks to a great combination of poor hitting and good pitching. The Tigers rank last in runs per game, 29th in average and 28th in OPS, while ranking third in ERA and WHIP. Detroit plays its home opener today against the Royals with a total of 8.
