    • Astros top Angels 11-3, clinch a postseason berth
      September 21, 2018
      By The Associated Press

Yuli Gurriel hit a grand slam and a two-run homer on his way to a career-high seven RBIs, and the Houston Astros clinched a postseason berth by routing the Los Angeles Angels 11-3 on Friday night.

George Springer added a three-run shot in the eighth for the Astros, who are still looking to secure the AL West title. The defending World Series champions began the day with a 3 1/2-game lead over second-place Oakland.

Houston starter Gerrit Cole (15-5) allowed three hits and three runs in seven innings in his fifth straight win. He also struck out 12, giving him 1,006 for his career and moving him in front of teammate Justin Verlander (269) for most in the AL this season with 272.

Gurriel hit his third career grand slam in the first inning. He connected for his 12th homer against Andrew Heaney (9-10) in the third and singled in Tyler White in the fifth.

It was his first career multihomer game. His brother Lourdes Gurriel Jr. also homered twice for Toronto on Friday night, marking the first time in major league history that brothers had multihomer games on the same day.

Gurriel's seven RBIs were the most for a Houston player since J.R. Towles set a franchise record with eight 11 years ago on Friday.

Mike Trout homered for the second straight game for the Angels, who lost their third in a row. They have allowed 42 runs combined in those three losses.

      RED SOX 7, INDIANS 5

CLEVELAND (AP) Sam Travis and Tzu-Wei Lin hit their first major league home runs and the Boston Red Sox tied a team record more than a century old with their 105th win.

The AL East champion Red Sox (105-49), playing without several of their regulars, matched the club mark set in 1912.

Trevor Bauer took a step toward being in Cleveland's postseason rotation, pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings in his first appearance since breaking his right leg on Aug. 11. He was 12-6 with a 2.22 ERA when was struck on the lower leg by a line drive hit by Jose Abreu of the Chicago White Sox.

Boston ace Chris Sale, being eased back into the rotation after recent shoulder trouble, struck out seven in 3 1/3 innings. He allowed two runs in his third start back from the disabled list.

Josh Donaldson homered off Sale in the fourth, ending the lefty's 35-inning consecutive scoreless streak. It was the first homer off Sale in 75 innings.

The Red Sox used nine pitchers against the AL Central champion Indians. Matt Barnes (6-3) pitched a scoreless sixth and Craig Kimbrel worked the ninth for his 42nd save.

Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, Andrew Benintendi and Jackie Bradley Jr. were out of Boston's lineup. Rafael Devers homered and Travis, who had three RBIs, for the Red Sox, who used a four-run seventh to erase a 4-2 deficit.

Shane Bieber (10-5) allowed six runs in 4 2/3 innings.

      YANKEES 10, ORIOLES 8

NEW YORK (AP) - CC Sabathia won for just the second time since the All-Star break, Didi Gregorius and Aaron Hicks hit two-run homers and the Yankees built a six-run lead to beat Baltimore and close in on their second straight AL wild card.

Luke Voit added a two-run single to give him 24 RBIs in 31 games with the Yankees, and Hicks scored four runs. After Baltimore closed to 9-8 in the eighth, Aaron Judge doubled in a run for his first RBI since returning from the disabled list on Sept. 14.

New York lowered its magic number to two over Tampa Bay for ensuring a wild-card game on Oct. 3, most likely against Oakland. The Yankees began the night 1+ games ahead of the Athletics for home-field advantage.

Baltimore dropped to a major league-worst 44-109, overtaking the 1937 St. Louis Browns for second-most losses in franchise history behind the 111 of the 1939 Browns.

      BRAVES 6, PHILLIES 5

ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta Braves moved to the brink of their first NL East title since 2013, bouncing back from Ronald Acuna Jr.'s defensive blunder with a five-run seventh inning.

Ozzie Albies sparked the comeback with a two-run homer and Johan Camargo finished it off with a two-out, two-run single, giving the Baby Braves a chance to celebrate as soon as Saturday afternoon with one more victory over the second-place Phillies.

Acuna misjudged Wilson Ramos' liner to left in the top half of the seventh, turning what should have been an out into a two-run double. Pinch-hitter Jose Bautista tacked on a run-scoring single, giving the Phillies a 4-1 lead.

Tyler Flowers led off the bottom half with a single off Pat Neshek (3-2), and Albies followed with a drive into the right-field seats for his 23rd homer. Dansby Swanson walked and Lucas Duda followed with a pinch-hit single before Neshek finally got an out - on a grounder that bounced off the third-base bag and was backhanded by Asdrubal Cabrera, who threw home to get Swanson trying to score.

Ender Inciarte hit a run-scoring double into the right-field corner. With two outs and the bases loaded, Camargo came through on a 3-2 pitch by lining a two-run single to left to put the Braves ahead for the first time all night .

Jonny Venters (4-0) claimed the win by getting the final two outs in the seventh. A.J. Minter earned his 15th save despite giving up a run in the ninth.

      RAYS 11, BLUE JAYS 3

TORONTO (AP) - Austin Meadows drove in three runs, Tommy Pham reached base three times and had two RBIs and Tampa Bay keep its postseason hopes alive.

Pham walked twice, tripled and added a sacrifice fly as the Rays bounced back from a tough, 9-8 loss Thursday, when the Blue Jays scored seven runs in the bottom of the ninth inning for the victory. Tampa Bay has not lost consecutive games since Aug. 17-18 at Boston.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit two home runs for the Blue Jays, and Randal Grichuk added a solo shot. Toronto has lost 10 of 14 games against Tampa Bay this season.

Gurriel's older brother, Yuli, hit two home runs for Houston on Friday night. They are the first brothers in major league history to have multihomer games on the same day.

Jalen Beeks (5-1) allowed two runs in three innings, Adam Kolarek worked 1 2-3, Hunter Wood got one out, and Austin Pruitt pitched the final three innings for his third save.

Making his sixth career start, Blue Jays right-hander Sean Reid-Foley (2-4) allowed for runs, two earned, and six hits in four-plus innings.

      ROYALS 4, TIGERS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Ian Kennedy pitched three-run ball into the eighth inning, and Kansas City stopped a five-game slide.

Alex Gordon had three hits for the Royals, who led 4-0 after four innings.

The Tigers committed three errors while losing for the eighth time in 11 games.

Kennedy (3-8) won his second straight start, permitting two earned runs and seven hits in seven-plus innings. He struck out six and walked none.

      MARLINS 1, REDS 0, 10 INNINGS

MIAMI (AP) - Pinch-hitter Isaac Galloway smacked an opposite-field double in the 10th inning to score Brian Anderson and lead Miami.

Galloway drove David Hernandez's 3-2 slider past right fielder Phillip Ervin to plate Anderson, who had reached on a double to right.

Kyle Barraclough (1-6) retired the final two batters in the top of the 10th.

Hernandez (5-2) relieved Luis Castillo with two on and one out in the ninth, retiring Peter O'Brien on a double play.

Castillo allowed five hits, struck out five and walked one in his 8 1/3 innings, his longest start of the season.

Wei-Yin Chen pitched seven innings of three-hit ball for the Marlins, striking out eight in his final home start of the season. Chen finished with a 1.62 ERA in 13 starts at Marlins Park.

      WHITE SOX 10, CUBS 4

CHICAGO (AP) -Chicago played without shortstop Addison Russell after he was accused of domestic violence by his ex-wife, and they were unable to overcome a shaky performance by Jose Quintana in a loss to the White Sox in a crosstown matchup.

Russell was placed on administrative leave by Major League Baseball after a blog post attributed to Melisa Reidy contained detailed allegations of years of physical and emotional abuse. The 24-year-old Russell can challenge the leave before an arbitrator, and the leave can be extended for additional seven-day periods if the union agrees. He continues to be paid his $3.2 million salary.

Quintana (13-11) was charged with five runs and nine hits in five-plus innings against his former team. The left-hander had been pitching well, going 3-1 with a 2.10 ERA over his previous six starts.

Daniel Palka also homered at Guaranteed Rate Field, and Ryan LaMarre went 3 for 3 with three RBIs.

White Sox right-hander Reynaldo Lopez (7-9) struck out eight while pitching seven innings of one-run ball.

The Cubs' lead in the NL Central was trimmed to 1 1/2-games over Milwaukee, which rallied for a 7-3 victory at Pittsburgh.

      METS 4, NATIONALS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Jacob deGrom turned in a record 23rd consecutive quality start, lowered his ERA to 1.77 and boosted his record to .500 as he bids to earn the NL Cy Young Award, allowing one run in seven innings for the Mets.

Throwing fastballs in the 97-99 mph range, deGrom (9-9) struck out eight and walked one while allowing just one run and three hits, all singles. Bob Gibson (in 1968) and Chris Carpenter (2005) each had single-season runs of 22 quality starts, the previous major league mark.

The right-handed deGrom has given up as many as four earned runs in only one of his 31 starts in 2018, back on April 10 against Miami. He's now up to 28 in a row allowing three runs or fewer, the longest single-season streak in major league history.

So this game was pretty much wrapped up by the third inning, which ended with the Mets ahead 4-1. Jay Bruce had two run-scoring hits, and Devin Mesoraco and Dominic Smith also delivered RBIs, all off Joe Ross (0-1).

Robert Gsellman worked around Anthony Rendon's RBI single in the ninth for his 12th save.

      RANGERS 8, MARINERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Adrian Beltre hit a three-run homer in the first inning and finished with a season-high five RBIs, and Texas prevailed in a game halted by rain with two outs in the top of the seventh inning.

The Rangers snapped a four-game losing streak and won their first game under interim manager Don Wakamatsu. Texas fired Jeff Banister on Friday morning. The Rangers are 65-88 and have been in last place since April 9.

The loss moved the Mariners closer to elimination in the American League wild-card race.

Beltre's RBIs all came with two outs. His 476th career home run moved him into sole possession of 30th place all time, moving past Stan Musial and Willie Stargell.

Right-hander Ariel Jurado (4-5) followed an ''opener'' for the fourth consecutive time, allowing two runs in five innings on the way to the win.

      CARDINALS 5, GIANTS 3

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Pinch-hitter Matt Adams had a clutch two-run double in the eighth inning to lead St. Louis.

Harrison Bader sparked the winning rally with a two-out walk against Mark Melancon (0-2). Yairo Munoz then singled before Melancon was replaced by left-hander Tony Watson.

Adams doubled to left on a 2-1 pitch, giving St. Louis a 5-3 lead.

John Brebbia (3-3) struck out the side in the eighth for the win and Carlos Martinez picked up his fourth save in four chances.

St. Louis moved within 4 1/2 games of the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs, who lost 10-4 to the White Sox. The Cardinals stayed 1 + games ahead of Colorado for the second NL wild card.

Evan Longoria had three hits for San Francisco, which has dropped 14 of 18. Madison Bumgarner allowed three runs and eight hits in six innings.

      BREWERS 8, PIRATES 3

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Travis Shaw, Mike Moustakas and Erik Kratz homered during a six-run sixth inning as Milwaukee rallied for the win and gained ground in the NL Central race.

The Brewers drew within 1+ games of the division-leading Chicago Cubs, who lost 10-4 to the crosstown White Sox. Milwaukee leads the NL wild-card standings by three games over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Shaw's two-run home run, his 30th, followed Jesus Aguilar's RBI double and put the Brewers ahead 4-3. After Ryan Braun walked, Moustakas and Kratz hit back-to-back homers. Kratz drive cleared the 410-foot sign in left-center, the deepest part of the park.

Pittsburgh had its five-game winning streak end. The Pirates fell 5+ games behind the Colorado Rockies for the second NL wild card.

Keon Broxton added a solo homer in the eighth for the Brewers.

Corbin Burnes (6-0) pitched a scoreless fifth. Edgar Santana (3-4) allowed three runs in the sixth and failed to retire any of the three batters he faced.

      ROCKIES 6, DIAMONDBACKS 2

PHOENIX (AP) - German Marquez struck out 11 in seven innings and Ian Desmond had three RBIs, lifting Colorado to a much-needed win.

The Rockies bounced back nicely after a three-game sweep by the Los Angeles Dodgers dropped them 2 1/2 games back in the NL West and 1 1/2 games behind St. Louis for the second NL wild card.

Marquez (13-10) gave them a shot, shaking off David Peralta's two-run homer in the first inning with six scoreless frames. He allowed six hits and tied Pedro Astacio (1999) for second on Colorado's single-season strikeout list with 210. Marquez is the third Colorado pitcher - with Astacio and Ubaldo Jimenez - with 200 strikeouts in a season.

Arizona's Zack Greinke (14-11) carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and struck out six, but the Rockies scored four runs in the eighth after he left with one out. Desmond hit a two-run single off Brad Ziegler in the eighth in Colorado's team-record 42nd road win.

Arizona has lost five of six to drop six games behind the Cardinals in the wild-card race.

LEADING OFF: Victor Martinez wraps up, Wainwright starts
        September 21, 2018
        By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Saturday:

        BRAVES BASH?

The Atlanta Braves can clinch their first NL East title since 2013 by beating Philadelphia at SunTrust Park. Sparked by Ronald Acuna Jr. and Ozzie Albies, the Baby Braves moved closer to the division crown with a 6-5 win over the Phillies on Friday night.

The Braves are skipping Sean Newcomb's spot, moving up Mike Foltynewicz (11-10, 2.90 ERA) to face Jake Arrieta (10-9, 3.77 ERA). Newcomb has a 7.44 ERA over his last seven starts, endangering his place in the possible playoff rotation after he spent much of the season as one of Atlanta's most effective pitchers. Newcomb will be available out of the bullpen for the remainder of the weekend but could still make another start in the final week of the regular season, according to manager Brian Snitker.

        BIG NUMBER

The Red Sox go for their 106th win, which would break a team record that's more than a century old. Boston (105-49) beat Cleveland in a matchup of AL division champions to tie the club mark set in 1912. Rick Porcello (17-7, 4.30 ERA), the team leader in wins, starts for the Bosox at Progressive Field against Mike Clevinger (12-8, 3.06).

        WELL PLAYED

Detroit designated hitter Victor Martinez plans to play the final game of his 16-season career when the Tigers host Kansas City. The five-time All-Star announced he will sit out Sunday's series finale, then accompany the team on its final road trip without playing.

''I feel like I owe it to the fans to have my final at-bats here,'' said Martinez, who will be honored in a pregame ceremony at Comerica Park.

        HE'S ALL WRIGHT

Adam Wainwright makes his first start for St. Louis since pitching six shutout innings to beat the Dodgers last weekend. The 37-year-old righty has missed most of the season because of elbow trouble. The longtime ace (2-3, 3.72 ERA) is making a bid to re-establish himself in the rotation as the Cardinals push for a playoff spot. Wainwright will be facing the Giants at Busch Stadium.

        WILDNESS

Aaron Judge and the Yankees can clinch their second straight AL wild-card slot if they beat Baltimore and if Tampa Bay loses to Toronto. New York also is trying to stay ahead of the Athletics to host that one-game playoff on Oct. 3.

        WINDY CITY WEEKEND

Jon Lester (16-6, 3.43 ERA) will start for the NL Central-leading Cubs when they travel across Chicago to visit the White Sox. Lester is 3-1 with a 2.08 ERA in his last five starts. Lucas Giolito (10-11, 5.77 ERA) is set to pitch for the Chisox.

-- The Angels are 0-36 SU since the start of the 2011 season as a dog of more than plus 135 when they are off a game as a dog and their opponent's starter has a strike-per-ball ratio greater than 1.88 on the season.

                    Hitter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- The Mets are 9-0 SU in franchise history on the road off a game as a favorite in which Jay Bruce had multiple RBI. NY has won these nine games by an average of 4.00 runs and they were the dog in three of the nine.

                    Starter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- The Cardinals are 19-0 SU when Adam Wainwright starts as a favorite of more than 130 after August.

                      • Braves top Phillies 5-3, claim NL East crown
                        September 22, 2018
                        By The Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) The Braves capped a most surprising season by clinching their first NL East crown since 2013, with Mike Foltynewicz taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning Saturday in a 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

A year after going 70-92, manager Brian Snitker and his Baby Braves surged back into the playoffs.

Atlanta makes its first postseason appearance since 2013 on Oct. 4 in the NL Division Series. The Braves won their 18th division title, tying the New York Yankees for the most in the majors since division play began in 1969.

Philadelphia, which led the division in early August, is 6-14 this month.

Foltynewicz (12-10) tipped his cap to a standing ovation as he left with runners on first and second in the eighth with a 4-0 lead.

Arodys Vizcaino, in his first save situation since June 17, closed out the ninth for his 16th save.

Jake Arrieta (10-10) allowed four runs, four hits and three walks in two innings, the shortest outing of his nine-year career.

                        YANKEES 3, ORIOLES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Aaron Hicks doubled home the winning run in the 11th inning off Paul Fry (0-2), and New York clinched an AL wild card spot.

Rookie manager Aaron Boone will lead the Yankees into the winner-take-all Oct. 3 wild-card game, most likely against Oakland. The Yankees began the day 1+ games ahead of the Athletics for home-field advantage and are 53-27 at home this season.

Hicks and Luke Voit homered in the second inning, but the Orioles tied the score with runs in the third and the fifth off Lance Lynn.

                        Tommy Kahnle (2-0) pitched a one-hit 11th.

Baltimore dropped to 44-110, one shy of the franchise record for losses set by the 1939 St. Louis Browns.

                        BLUE JAYS 5, RAYS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Rookie left-hander Thomas Pannone (4-1) allowed two runs and six hits in 6 2.3 innings to win his third straight start.

Rowdy Tellez homered and drove in three runs for Toronto,

Tommy Pham and Jesus Sucre hit solo home runs for the Rays, who began the day 6 1/2 games behind Oakland for the second AL wild card.

Tyler Glasnow (2-7) gave up three runs and six hits in six innings, losing for the fourth time in five starts.

                        CUBS 8, WHITE SOX 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Javier Baez homered and the visiting Cubs took advantage of huge mistake by Ryan LaMarre to move 2+ games ahead of second-place Milwaukee in the NL Central. LaMarre allowed Daniel Murphy's fifth-inning drive to left to sail over him for an RBI double, and Ben Zobrist followed with a two-run single.

Jon Lester (17-6) labored through five innings to move into a tie with Washington ace Max Scherzer for the NL lead in wins. The left-hander allowed three runs, two earned, and eight hits in his second straight victory.

Lucas Giolito (10-12) was charged with five runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.

                        PIRATES 3, BREWERS 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Trevor Williams (14-9) combined with three relievers on a five-hitter, cutting Milwaukee's wild-card lead cut to two games over St. Louis.

Pittsburgh's 16 shutouts are one behind Detroit, the major league leader.

Starling Marte hit a two-run double in the third off Zach Davies (2-7), and Colin Moran added an RBI single in the eighth.

                        CARDINALS 5, GIANTS 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Tyler O'Neill hit a solo home run off Mark Melancon (0-3) with two outs in the 10th inning, and St. Louis remained 1+ games ahead of Colorado for the second NL wild-card spot. Yadier Molina also homered for St. Louis, which won for the fifth time in six games.

Carlos Martinez (8-6) pitched two scoreless innings.

                        ROCKIES 5, DIAMONDBACKS 1

PHOENIX (AP) - Antonio Senzatela (6-6) allowed three hits in seven innings for Colorado, which entered 1+ games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

Arizona has lost 11 out of 14 and is seven games back of the Cardinals with seven games left.

Patrick Corbin (11-7) allowed four runs, five hits and four walks in a season-low three innings.

                        ASTROS 10, ANGELS 5

HOUSTON (AP) - Jose Altuve capped a nine-run eighth with a two-run homer as Houston overcame a 5-1 deficit. The AL West-leading Astros began the day 3+ games ahead of Oakland.

After the Angels scored five times in the top of the eighth, Yuli Gurriel, Brian McCann and Evan Gattis each hit RBI singles off of Ty Buttrey (0-1) to close the lead to 5-4.

With the bases loaded and one out, pinch-hitter Tyler White hit a chopper to third baseman Taylor Ward, who threw the ball into right field for an error that allowed two runs to score. George Springer followed with a two-run single off Blake Parker.

Justin Verlander allowed one hit and struck out 11 in six innings. Collin McHugh (6-2) got the final two outs of the eighth.

                        MARINERS 13, RANGERS 0

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Robinson Cano hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the fifth off Mike Minor (12-8), and Marco Gonzales (13-9) allowed one hit over six innings

Seattle at least temporarily avoided elimination in the AL wild-card race and extending the longest playoff drought in the four major pro sports to 17 years.

Cano, who added an RBI double and had three hits, has nine homers - five since returning from an 80-game drug suspension Aug. 14.

Dee Gordon connected for his third homer, a two-run shot in the eighth off Bartolo Colon in the 45-year-old's fourth relief appearance.

                        INDIANS 5, RED SOX 4

CLEVELAND (AP) - Michael Brantley singled in the winning run in the 11th inning off Drew Pomeranz (2-6), delaying Boston's bid for a club record 106th victory and home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

Tyler Olson (2-1) pitched two scoreless innings.

IMike Clevinger struck out six in five innings and raised his total to 202, making the Indians the first team in major league history to have four pitchers reach 200 in the same season. Carlos Carrasco (217), Trevor Bauer (215) and Corey Kluber (205) are the others

                        NATIONALS 6, METS 0

WASHINGTON (AP) - Rookie Austin Voth (1-1) and four relievers combined on a one-hitter, hours after Washington was eliminated from playoff contention. Matt Wieters and Trea Turner homered for the Nationals.

Making his second major league start, Voth allowed an infield single to Michael Conforto leading off the fourth inning.

Corey Oswalt (3-3) allowed two runs in five innings.

                        TIGERS 5, ROYALS 4

DETROIT (AP) - Mikie Mahtook hit a two-run homer in the eighth, and Detroit was a winner in Victor Martinez's final major league game.

With the score tied at 3, Niko Goodrum led off the eighth with his third hit of the game, a single off Jason Hammel (3-14). Mahtook then lined Hammel's 1-0 slider over the left-field fence.

The 39-year-old Martinez, who made his debut with Cleveland in 2002, hit an infield single in his first at-bat and was removed for pinch-runner Ronny Rodriguez. Fellow Venezuelans Salvador Perez and Alcides Escobar came out of the Royals' dugout to embrace the five-time All-Star as he walked off the field to a standing ovation.

Joe Jimenez (5-4) allowed the Royals to tie it in the eighth, and Shane Greene earned his 31st save.

                        MARLINS 5, REDS 1

MIAMI (AP) - Austin Dean homered and drove in three runs, and five pitchers combined on a six-hitter in a matchup of last-place teams.

Jose Urena (8-12) pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings and won his fourth start in a row, and Drew Steckenrider stranded two runners for his fifth save.

Anthony DeSclafani (7-7) tied a career high with 10 strikeouts but allowed five runs, three earned, in 5 2/3 innings.

                          • LEADING OFF: Happ gets playoff prep; Snell seeks 21st win
                            September 22, 2018
                            By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors on Sunday:

                            THE HAPPENING

The Yankees know they'll be playing in the AL wild-card game on Oct. 3, and J.A. Happ on track to be their starter. New York clinched a wild-card berth with a 3-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles in 11 innings on Saturday. Happ, 6-0 with a 2.39 ERA for New York after he was acquired from Toronto, is scheduled to start Sunday against Boston and would be on normal rest next Friday at Boston and for the wild-card game. The left-hander allowed one run and two hits over six innings to win on Sept. 4 at Oakland, New York's probable wild-card opponent.

                            ON A ROLL

The Tampa Bay Rays will look to keep their faint postseason hopes alive behind streaking left-hander Blake Snell in their series finale against Toronto. Snell (20-5, 1.97 ERA) is 8-0 with a 1.17 ERA in his past eight starts, striking out 63 over 46 innings in that stretch. The Blue Jays will counter with lefty Ryan Borucki, who pitched eight shutout innings to beat Baltimore in his previous outing. The Rays would need a collapse by Oakland in the season's final week to earn a wild-card berth. If not, the A's would face the Yankees in the winner-take-all game.

                            TWO'S ENOUGH

The Cardinals shouldn't expect to need an offensive outburst to maintain their position in the NL wild-card race. Miles Mikolas (16-4, 3.01 ERA), who starts Sunday against San Francisco, is 16-0 when receiving two or more runs of support. St. Louis holds the second wild-card position behind the Milwaukee Brewers, with the Colorado Rockies chasing.

                            LOOKING AHEAD

Now that they've won their first NL East crown since 2013, the Atlanta Braves can start figuring out their postseason rotation. Mike Foltynewicz has been the Braves' most consistent starter and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in Saturday's division-clinching win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Kevin Gausman has been solid since coming over in a trade with Baltimore and could start Game 2 of the NL Division Series. Beyond that, the Braves have Anibal Sanchez (6-6, 3.01 ERA), Julio Teheran (16-9, 4.03) and Sean Newcomb (16-12, 4.04). Sanchez can begin stating his case on Sunday when he pitches against the Phillies and ace Aaron Nola.

                            • Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

                              13) Couple of Week 3 NFL trends to consider:
                              — Over last five years, teams playing their home opener in Week 3 are 6-11-1 vs spread; 4-8-1 if favored, 2-3 if an underdog. Chiefs-Seahawks-Texans are in that boat this week.

                              — Teams playing their road opener in Week 3 are 8-9 vs spread; 2-3 if favored, 6-6 if an underdog. Packers-Broncos-Saints are in that boat this week.

                              12) Old Dominion 49 (+27.5), Virginia Tech 35— Monarchs are in their fifth season of I-A football; they lost 52-10 to Liberty earlier this month, but they pulled a shocker here, beating a Tech squad that recruits heavily in ODU’s talent-rich backyard.

Old Dominion scored four 4th quarter TD’s, on drives of 75-67-75-79 yards; they put up 632 yards on the Hokies.

                              11) Oklahoma 28, Army 21 OT— Sooners were 30-point favorite; they needed OT to win, after Cadets ran 87 plays from scrimmage, converted 13-21 third down plays, 4-5 fourth down plays. Oklahoma averaged 8.9 yards per play but ran only 40 plays the whole game.

                              10) Stanford 38, Oregon 31 OT— Ducks are on their third head coach in three years; am guessing Mario Cristobal will stay for a while, but his clock management needs some work.

Ducks led this game 24-7 at the half, but Stanford fought back, forced an Oregon turnover with 0:50 left, and tied the game at the gun, then won it in OT.

If Stanford coach David Shaw wanted to be an NFL head coach, he’d get a lot of offers.

                              9) Texas 31, TCU 16— Tom Herman is now 6-1 vs spread as an underdog in his four years as a head coach. TCU turned ball over four times (-4) in this game; hard to win that way.

Who made TCU’s schedule? Ohio State/Texas on consecutive Saturdays? No bueno.

                              8) Upsets of the Day:
                              — Old Dominion (+27.5) 49, Virginia Tech 35
                              — Texas Tech (+14.5) 41, Oklahoma State 17
                              — Kentucky (+10) 28, Mississippi State 7
                              — Purdue (+7) 30, Boston College 13
                              — Illinois State (I-AA team) 35, Colorado State 19

                              7) Penn State 63, Illinois 24— Illinois led Penn State 24-21 early in third quarter Friday night; they lost 63-24, biggest loss since 2003 by a team that led at any point in second half.

Nittany Lions outscored their last three opponents 108-0 in second half.

                              6) Buffalo 42, Rutgers 13— Why is Rutgers in the Big 14? Not only were the Scarlet Knights a 6-point home underdog in this game, Buffalo got a $920,000 check just for showing up playing the game.

Here’s the thing; if you pay a team $920,000 to show up, you’re supposed to beat them.

                              5) Georgia 43, Missouri 29— Dawgs scored a defensive TD, scored another TD on a blocked punt; total yardage was only 445-393 Georgia, but Mizzou turned ball over time three times (plus the BP), completed less than half their passes and Georgia won a game that seemed closer than it actually was.

All three of Georgia’s offensive TDs were on plays of 33+ yards

                              4) Texas-San Antonio 25, Texas State 21— Difference in game was Roadrunners’ defense; they scored a TD in the first minute, and a safety in last 2:00 of this game.

                              3) Florida 47, Tennessee 21— Volunteers aren’t very good; they turned ball over six times in this game. Some assistant coaches are more recruiters than tacticians; Tennessee needs some serious recruiters on their staff, because this roster lacks a quarterback, to start…….

                              2) Utah State 42, Air Force 32— Guy at SouthPoint casino Saturday night risked $72,000 to win $20,000 on Utah State to win SU— he banks the $20,000 with Utah State winning this game. Aggies were a 10-point favorite.

                              1) South Carolina 37, Vanderbilt 14— Andy Ludwig is the offensive coordinator at Vanderbilt; he’s worked at 13 different schools in his 32-year college coaching career. Guy must be awful good at packing.
Remember the 3 G's Gambling, Golf, Girls not in any particular order.....
