      Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

      Streaking:
Blake Snell, Tampa Bay Rays (19-5, 2.03 ERA, $1174)

Is Blake Snell the best pitcher in baseball right now? Might be.

The Rays have won Snell's last seven starts overall and during that span he owns an ERA of 1.32 and a WHIP of 0.7073. Oddsmakers have caught on to Snell, as well, as the Rays are massive -230 road favorites this evening in Arlington against Yovani Gallardo and the Texas Rangers.

      Slumping:
Yovani Gallardo, Texas Rangers (8-5, 6.67 ERA, $759)

On the other side of Snell's start tonight is Mr. Gallardo. "Yo" has been a profitable +7.59 units for bettors this season but his pitching numbers tell a much different story. The Rangers won a few shootouts as big underdogs with Gallardo on the hill, which has inflated his betting numbers, but over his last eight starts he is pitching to an ERA of 7.11 and a WHIP of 1.7105.

The Rangers are, of course, big home underdogs today at +180.

      Windy Oakland

The Angels and A's open a three game series at Rickey Henderson Field at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on Tuesday night and the weather forecast is calling for a stiff 12-14 mile per hour breeze blowing out the center field.

The full game total looks pretty achievable at 8.5 but the Angels are starting Tyler Skaggs, who has allowed 17 earned runs over his last 6.2 innings of work (22.95 ERA), so Over on the A's team total of 4.5 (+105) seems like the smarter play.

      Ring 'Em Up Eddings

Umpire Doug Eddings will be calling balls and strikes tonight in San Diego for the game between the Giants and the Padres at Petco Park. Eddings is one of the top Under umpires in Major league Baseball this season at 18-9, and the Under is 22-10-1 in his last 33 games in pads dating back to last season.

The main trait of an Under trending umpire is a large strike zone, which leads to more strikes called, which leads to less hits, which leads to less runs scored.

Eddings owns the second highest strike percentage of the 89 home plate umpires who have called games this season at 65.0 percent (Jeremie Rehak is No. 1 at 65.3 percent).

The total may be low, but both Derek Holland and Joey Lucchesi have been pitching well. Look for both pitchers to exploit the wide strike zone and put plenty of zeros up on the scoreboard. Full game Under 7 (-110) is the play tonight.

      Kluber Dominance

Over the last month and a half of the baseball season, Cleveland Indians' starting pitcher Corey Kluber has been hit-or-miss. He either has an electric start where he dominates his opponents over seven shutout innings, or he blows up for four or five earned runs allowed in five innings of work. One thing that you can rely on with Kluber, however, is that he will dominate the Chicago White Sox.

In two starts against the White Sox this season, Kluber has allowed zero runs and only four hits in 13 innings of work. He has also rung up 17 strikeouts with only one walk in those two victories. Oh, and by the way, the Indians have outscored the Sox 21-1 in those two games.

The lean for this game is the Tribe on the runline -1.5 (-120) and if you're feeling frisky check them out at -2.5 (+135). Also, the White Sox team hits total of Under 7.5 (-120) should be considered.

            • Yankees top Red Sox 3-2, deny Boston a division clincher
              September 19, 2018
              By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Neil Walker hit a three-run homer, Zach Britton started a game-ending double play on New York's third try in the ninth inning and the Yankees kept the Boston Red Sox from a bubbly celebration in the Bronx for at least another night with a 3-2 victory Tuesday.

Batting from the left side, Walker golfed a no-doubter in the seventh inning off Ryan Brasier for the Yankees' third hit of the game and a 3-1 lead. Walker dropped his bat, admired the shot for a moment and then pointed into the Yankees dugout as he jogged to first base.

Aaron Judge returned to New York's lineup for the first time since breaking his right wrist July 26, while AL MVP candidate Mookie Betts got a day off for Boston after injuring his left side Sunday. Judge hit a pop fly to the warning track but finished 0 for 4.

New York entered the night with a 1 1/2-game lead over Oakland for the top AL wild card. The A's hosted the Angels later.

Boston is trying to clinch the AL East at Yankee Stadium for the second time in three years. The Red Sox lead the Yankees by 10 1/2 games and entered the night with a magic number of four over the Astros to lock up baseball's best record.

The game started about six hours after it was supposed to begin. Originally scheduled for 1:05 p.m., it was pushed back earlier in the morning because heavy rain was in the forecast.

Chad Green (8-2) and David Robertson relieved J.A. Happ and got the ball to Britton, who capped a five-hitter for his sixth save.

Boston reliever Brandon Workman (6-1) walked two in the seventh before Walker took Brasier deep. The Red Sox bullpen wasted six scoreless innings of two-hit ball from hard-throwing starter Nathan Eovaldi.

              CARDINALS 8, BRAVES 1

ATLANTA (AP) - Paul DeJong hit a two-run homer, Yadier Molina added a two-run single in a four-run eighth inning and St. Louis won ITS third straight game.

Austin Gomber pitched five effective innings for St. Louis, which holds a slim lead for the second NL wild card. The Cardinals top the National League with 36 victories since All-Star break, and their 43 road wins this season rank second.

Atlanta's division lead dropped to 5+ games over Philadelphia as the Braves lost their fourth in a row after a season-best six-game winning streak. They are 38-38 at SunTrust Park and have dropped 14 of 18 at home.

The Braves' magic number remained at seven as they try to clinch a division title for the first time in five years. Philadelphia beat the New York Mets 5-2.

Anibal Sanchez (6-6) allowed four hits and two runs and struck out six in five innings.

Gomber (6-1) gave up six hits, one run and three walks while striking out five for his fifth victory in his last six decisions.

              BLUE JAYS 6, ORIOLES 4

BALTIMORE (AP) - The Orioles fell to Toronto, dropping their 108th game, a team record for losses in a season since they arrived in Baltimore in 1954.

The 1988 Orioles, who opened the season 0-21, held the previous team record for losses with a 54-107 finish. The overall franchise record for defeats is 111, set by the 1939 St. Louis Browns - a mark this year's team could still eclipse.

The Orioles led 4-2 in the seventh before a throwing error by third baseman Steve Wilkerson on a grounder by Teoscar Hernandez allowed two runs to score. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. followed with a two-RBI single off reliever Paul Fry that that gave Toronto a 6-4 lead.

Reliever Jake Petricka (3-1) pitched two scoreless innings. Tyler Clippard held the Orioles in the eighth, and Ken Giles earned his 23rd save.

              PIRATES 2, ROYALS 1, 11 innings

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pinch-hitter Ryan Lavarnway drove in the winning run with a single in the 11th inning and Jameson Taillon struck out a career-high 11 for Pittsburgh.

It was just the second at-bat of the season for the 30-year-old Lavarnway, the Pirates' fourth-string catcher. He hit .288 in 77 games in with Triple-A Indianapolis. Lavarnway has played 142 career games with five teams.

Starling Marte led off the 11th with an infield single off Burch Smith (1-6). Josh Bell walked and Burch struck out Francisco Cervelli before Adam Frazier was intentionally walked to load the bases, setting up Lavarnway's walk-off hit to shallow center.

Pinch-hitter Hunter Dozier tied the game in the ninth with a double off Pirates closer Felipe Vazquez that scored Jorge Bonifacio. Left fielder Corey Dickerson threw to shortstop Jordy Mercer, who relayed home to throw out Salvador Perez and preserve the tie.

Kyle Crick (3-2) retired the side on 10 pitches in the 11th to earn the win.

              REDS 3, BREWERS 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jose Peraza capitalized on Chase Anderson's home run troubles with a drive in the first inning and Cincinnati dealt Milwaukee its third loss in four games.

The Brewers' edge for the top NL wild-card spot was cut to two games by St. Louis, with Colorado also in close contention.

Milwaukee managed only three hits against five Cincinnati pitchers. It was the third low-scoring loss for the Brewers in four games - they fell to Pittsburgh 3-1 on Saturday and 3-2 on Sunday.

Michael Lorenzen, making his first start since 2015 after 151 relief appearances, allowed one unearned run on one hit in four innings. Sal Romano (8-11) followed with 2 1/3 scoreless innings for the victory.

Raisel Iglesias struck out three in the ninth after a leadoff walk for his 28th save.

Anderson (9-8) gave up three runs on six hits with two walks in 3 2/3 innings, matching his shortest start of the season. Six relievers blanked the Reds the rest of the way.

              PHILLIES 5, METS 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jorge Alfaro hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the sixth inning and Philadelphia boosted its faint playoff hopes.

Philadelphia overcame an uneven outing from ace Aaron Nola and a home run by starter Steven Matz that made him the third Mets pitcher to homer in consecutive appearances.

The Phillies won for the third time in 10 games and moved within 5 + games of Atlanta in the NL East. The Braves lost 8-1 to St. Louis.

Wilson Ramos and Justin Bour delivered pinch-hit RBI hits in a five-run sixth before Alfaro drilled a curveball from Drew Smith (1-1) to left-center for his 10th homer.

And with that, Matz's eventful performance was wasted by the Mets.

The other Mets pitchers to homer in back-to-back outings were Hall of Famer Tom Seaver (1972) and Ron Darling (1989).

Pat Neshek (3-1) relieved Nola and got the final out of the sixth. Seranthony Dominguez, Tommy Hunter and Hector Neris each pitched a scoreless inning as the Phillies improved to 7-11 against the Mets this season.

              NATIONALS 4, MARLINS 2

MIAMI (AP) - Stephen Strasburg matched his season-high with 11 strikeouts and Bryce Harper tied a season high with five walks to lead Washington.

Anthony Rendon drove in two runs for the Nationals (77-75), who moved to within 6 + games of the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves, who lost 8-1 to St. Louis.

Strasburg (9-7) pitched six innings and allowed two runs and five hits with two walks. At one point, he struck out six consecutive batters.

Sean Doolittle pitched a perfect ninth for his 25th save in 26 opportunities.

Sandy Alcantara (2-1) pitched four innings for the Marlins and allowed six hits, six walks, and three runs.

              TWINS 5, TIGERS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Chris Gimenez homered and Tyler Austin drove in three runs to lead the Twins.

The Twins have won three straight, while the Tigers have lost seven of nine.

Mikie Mahtook drove in all of Detroit's runs.

Jake Odorizzi (7-10) allowed two runs on four hits in 6 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out six in his first start since losing a no-hitter in the eighth inning against the New York Yankees.

Trevor Hildenberg pitched the ninth for his seventh save, allowing Mahtook's two-out RBI single.

Daniel Norris (0-5) pitched a season-high 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks.

              INDIANS 5, WHITE SOX 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Corey Kluber struck out 11 in eight innings to record his career-high 19th win for Cleveland.

Kluber (19-7), who allowed three runs, topped 200 strikeouts for the fifth straight season. Kluber won 18 games in three of the previous four seasons, including his two AL Cy Young Award-winning years, 2014 and 2017.

Omar Narvaez walked and Matt Davidson singled with two outs in the eighth, but Kluber retired Ryan LaMarre on a groundout.

Indians All-Star second baseman Jose Ramirez was hit on the left arm by Carlos Rodon's pitch in the fifth inning and walked from the plate in obvious pain. Ramirez spoke with manager Terry Francona and a team trainer, but stayed in the game.

Carlos Rodon (6-6) allowed five runs in seven innings. Palka and Narvaez hit solo homers in the sixth for the White Sox.

              RAYS 4, RANGERS 0

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Blake Snell became the major leagues' first 20-game winner in two years, pitching Tampa Bay past Texas.

Snell (20-5) threw one-hit ball for five innings and tied the Tampa Bay record for victories in a season. David Price also won 20 in his Cy Young Award season of 2012.

Snell won his eighth straight start. The 25-year-old lefty struck out five, walked two and threw 92 pitches, exiting with a 1.97 ERA.

Tampa Bay has won four straight and 13 of 16 this month in a last-ditch attempt to wrest the AL second wild-card playoff berth from Oakland. The Rays began the day trailing the A's by 6 + games.

The Rays scored three times in the fourth against Yovani Gallardo (8-6). Willie Adames hit a two-run homer and Joey Wendle had an RBI double.

              ASTROS 7, MARINERS 0

HOUSTON (AP) - Marwin Gonzalez hit a two-run homer in a four-run third inning that helped Houston eliminate Seattle from contention for the AL West title.

Houston entered the day four games ahead of Oakland atop the division standings. The Athletics played later against the Angels.

Rookie starter Josh James (1-0) struck out seven and scattered four hits over 5 1/3 innings for his first major league win. Four relievers completed the shutout.

Seattle starter Mike Leake (10-10) yielded six hits and five runs in 6 1/3 innings to snap a two-game winning streak.

                Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                13) Sunday afternoon in the Marlins-Phillies game, teams used a combined 15 pitchers, and none of them batted, which is first time that ever happened in an NL game.

It is time for baseball to do away with September roster expansion; if they care so much about pace of play, then they should reduce the amount of pitching changes that are made.

                12) Seahawks were drop-kicking the ball when they kicked off a couple times Monday night; pretty sure I’ve never seen that before. Seattle’s punter is an Australian, so he knows drop-kicking from playing Aussie Rules Football, but his onside kick Monday night didn’t work.

Doug Flutie once tried to drop-kick a field goal (or PAT) but this was on a kickoff, which was interesting to see.

                11) When do the most explosive plays happen in the NFL? Which down?

After two weeks of play, there have been 258 plays of 20+ yards; 124 of them (48.1%) came on first down, 83 (32,2%) on second down, 48 on third down, three on 4th down.

There were 122 explosive plays in Week 1, 136 in Week 2; are offenses now using Weeks 1-4 to get into game shape, since many starters don’t play in preseason anymore?

                10) Coming into Tuesday’s games, Baltimore Orioles were 60 games out of first place; they’re first team since the ’62 Mets to be that far out of first place.

                9) Christian Yelich is only third player since 1900 to hit for the cycle twice in the same season; when the Marlins sold off their outfield last winter, who knew that Yelich would have the best season of those three guys this year?

                8) Philadelphia 76ers named Elton Brand as their new GM; he was promoted from from vice president of Basketball Operations.

                7) injury stuff:
                — Jaguars lost LT Cam Robinson (torn ACL) for the year.
                — Rams lost K Greg Zeurlein for few weeks; they signed K Sam Ficken
                — Colorado Rockies lost SS Trevor Story (elbow), but the good news is that it doesn’t look like he needs Tommy John surgery.

                6) Milwaukee Brewers moved their AAA farm club from Colorado Springs to San Antonio starting next year, which will make their minor league pitchers happier. San Antonio had been home of the Padres’ AA team in the Texas League, so fans in the Alamo will see better ball.

A’s made something official that we reported a few months ago; their AAA farm team will be in Las Vegas starting next year, which is good for A’s fans who enjoy going to Las Vegas (like me).

Mets’ AAA team jumps from Vegas to Syracuse; Nationals switch from Syracuse to Fresno, the Rangers are moving to Nashville and the Astros to Round Rock. Got all that?

                5) There have been 94 days in Las Vegas this year where the temperature got to 100 degrees; the all-time record is 100 days, back in 1947.

                4) Remember former Michigan football coach Brady Hoke? He went 31-20 as coach of the Wolverines from 2011-14; now he is the defensive line coach for the Carolina Panthers. It is kind of amazing how much football coaches move; it is a nomadic profession.

                3) Phillies actually had 40 players active last night; Mets’ TV guys said they’ve never heard of any team having the full 40 players eligible for a September game.

                2) Over the last 10 years, 20 NFL teams that have been favored to win by 16+ points; all 20 teams won SU, but went only 8-11-1 against the spread.

                1) Nationals 4, Marlins 2— Bryce Harper batted five times, and walked all five times.

                  • LEADING OFF: Rockies-Dodgers duel, Red Sox try to clinch
                    September 18, 2018
                    By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:

                    LAST CHAPTER

Locked in a tight race for the NL West title, the Rockies and Dodgers meet for the final time in the regular season. Rookie right-hander Walker Buehler (7-5, 2.88 ERA) pitches for Los Angeles against Tyler Anderson (6-9, 4.82) at Dodger Stadium. Colorado could be without slugger Trevor Story again after the All-Star shortstop hurt his right elbow Monday night. Tests showed inflammation but no structural damage, and the Rockies hope Story can return to the lineup in a few days. Story this year became the first shortstop in major league history with at least 40 doubles, 30 home runs and 25 steals in a season.

                    END GAME

As they pursue a third consecutive NL Central crown, the ninth inning is getting more and more complicated for the Chicago Cubs. The team announced Tuesday that closer Brandon Morrow will be shut down for the rest of the year because of an injured right elbow that's been slow to heal. Morrow, who leads the Cubs with 22 saves, has been on the disabled list since July 19. Chicago is without its two relievers with the most saves - Pedro Strop has 13 and is out with a hamstring injury. The club hopes he's ready for the postseason. For now, the Cubs will go with a closer-by-committee.

                    NO CINCH TO CLINCH

The Red Sox try again to wrap up the AL East, which they can do with a win at Yankee Stadium. Boston missed a chance to clinch Tuesday night when it lost 3-2 in the Bronx. Lefty David Price (15-6, 3.42 ERA) faces struggling New York ace Luis Severino (17-8, 3.46). Price is 5-0 with a 1.56 ERA in nine starts since the All-Star break, while Severino has a 6.35 ERA in 10 starts over that same span.

                    LOOK OUT!

The always playful Phillie Phanatic might be in revenge mode when Mets star Noah Syndergaard starts at Citizens Bank Park. Syndergaard swiped the Phanatic's four-wheeler before Tuesday night's game and drove around the outfield as the mascot chased him on foot. Syndergaard (12-3, 3.26 ERA), who has won three straight starts, faces Zach Eflin (10-7, 4.26).

Hottest team: Pirates (10-3 last 13)

Although Pittsburgh isn’t headed to the playoffs, the one positive the Pirates can take from the 2018 campaign is they cashed their season win total of 73. The Pirates currently sit at 76-74 with 12 games remaining after edging the Royals in a pair of exciting finishes at PNC Park. Pittsburgh has won seven consecutive home contests after getting swept by Atlanta last month, as the Pirates host the Brewers for their final series at PNC Park on Friday.

Prior to the Brew Crew invading the Steel City, the Pirates seek the sweep of Kansas City tonight. The trade for right-hander Chris Archer hasn’t worked out for the Bucs as the team is 1-5 in his past six starts. Archer owns a 5.49 ERA since arriving in Pittsburgh, but the Pirates have won two of his three starts at PNC Park.

Coldest team: Athletics (1-4 last five)

Although it’s a small sample size, Oakland has stumbled of late following a six-game winning streak. The A’s blew a 4-1 lead in Tuesday’s 9-7 home defeat to the Angels to slip 2 ½ games behind the Yankees for the top Wild Card position in the American League. During the four losses in this recent cold stretch, the A’s have allowed at least four runs in each setback, while suffering their first three-game skid since late July.

Oakland last lost consecutive home games in June as Brett Anderson tries to turn things around for the A’s tonight. Anderson has been knocked around in his last two starts by allowing 16 hits and nine earned runs in his last six innings of work in losses at Baltimore and Houston. However, Anderson has been remarkable at the Coliseum by not allowing a run in his previous three home starts.

Hottest pitcher: Noah Syndergaard, Mets (12-3, 3.26 ERA)

Although it has been a season to forget in Flushing, the Mets are playing well down the stretch by winning 11 of the past 17 games. Syndergaard is one reason behind that success as the Mets are 6-2 in his previous eight trips to the mound, including recent dominating road performances in victories at Boston and San Francisco. The Mets have won two of Syndergaard’s three starts against the Phillies this season, but Thor has allowed four runs in each of his past two outings versus their NL East rivals.

Coldest pitcher: Marco Estrada, Blue Jays (7-12, 5.75 ERA)

Toronto has owned Baltimore this season by posting a 14-4 record against the worst team in baseball. The Jays seek the sweep of the Orioles at Camden Yards tonight as Estrada looks to get on track. Estrada has been lit up of late by giving up five earned runs or more in three of his past four starts, while getting tagged for eight runs in an 11-0 rout by the Yankees last Friday. Toronto has dropped six of Estrada’s last seven road starts, but the Jays have won two of his three starts against Baltimore this season.

Biggest OVER run: Padres (7-3 last 10)

San Diego has won two home series since mid-June, as the Padres have dropped the first two games against the Giants. The Padres have allowed at least four runs in eight of the past 10 contests, including blowing a late lead in Tuesday’s 5-4 setback to San Francisco. Robbie Erlin heads to the hill for the Padres as the southpaw is winless in his past four starts. The Padres have finished UNDER the total in his past three home starts, while the offense has tallied two runs or fewer in each of his previous three outings.

Biggest UNDER run: Reds (6-0-1 last seven)

Cincinnati has dropped four of its past six games, but the Reds were able to knock off the Brewers on Tuesday, 3-1 as +170 road underdogs. The Reds have received solid pitching of late by allowing one run in three of the past four contests. On the flip side, the offense hasn’t been stellar as Cincinnati’s lineup has produced three runs or less in seven consecutive games. Matt Harvey has found new life since getting dealt to the Reds earlier this season by picking up seven wins, but Cincinnati is 1-4 in his previous five starts. Harvey was knocked around for 11 hits and five runs by the Brewers in a 13-12 thriller in late August, but the right-hander has rebounded by delivering three straight quality starts.

Matchup to watch: Rockies vs. Dodgers

Colorado began its crucial series with Los Angeles owning a slim half-game lead over the Dodgers in the NL West. Two days later and two Dodger victories later, the defending National League champions are back in the driver’s seat of the division with 10 games remaining. Following an 8-2 blowout on Monday, Chris Taylor lifted the Dodgers to an extra-inning triumph on Tuesday with a walk-off homer in a 3-2 win to send Los Angeles to its sixth win in the last seven games.

Since dropping three of four at Coors Field last month, the Dodgers have taken four of the past five matchups. Walker Buehler heads to the mound for L.A. tonight as the right-hander shut down the Cardinals in his past start by tossing eight scoreless innings and scattering two hits in a 3-0 shutout last Friday. The Dodgers have lost three of Buehler’s four starts against the Rockies this season, including a 4-2 defeat at Coors Field on September 8 as a -130 favorite.

It is not an easy road to the postseason for the Rockies, who not only begin Wednesday’s action 1 ½ games behind Los Angeles in the NL West, but 1 ½ games back of St. Louis for the second NL Wild Card spot. The final three series for the Rockies come against the Diamondbacks on the road, followed by home series with the Phillies and Nationals. Colorado has won five of its past six road series finales as Tyler Anderson tries to end his woes tonight. The Rockies are 1-9 in the southpaw’s past 10 starts, while Colorado is 1-3 against Los Angeles when Anderson takes the mound.

Betcha didn’t know: The Red Sox are playing the Yankees tonight (of course you knew that). Since David Price signed his megadeal with Boston in 2016, the Red Sox own a dreadful 0-5 record at Yankee Stadium when the former Cy Young pitcher takes the mound. Price opposes Luis Severino tonight as the Red Sox seek the AL East title with a win. The Yankees have split Severino’s four starts against Boston this season, but in both Bronx starts, New York has won.

Biggest public favorite: Indians (-300) vs. White Sox

Biggest pubic underdog: Giants (+130) at Padres
