      Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

      Streaking:
Sandy Alcantara, Miami Marlins (2-0, 0.75 ERA, $267)

What is this? A Miami Marlins starting pitcher in our Streaking section? It's been a while.

Granted, it's only been two starts in 2018 for right-hander Sandy Alcantara, but those two starts have been great. Heading in to his third start of the season Alcantara owns a win/loss record of 2-0, an ERA of 0.75, and a WHIP of 1.0833. Walks have been a minor issue with 7 BBs in 12 innings of work, so he'll have to get that situation under control.

Alcantara gets the start opposite Steven Matz in Game 1 of today's doubleheader in Queens between the Marlins and Mets.

      Slumping:
Stephen Gonsalves, Minnesota Twins (0-2, 11.68 ERA, $-48)

Stephen Gonsalves is the top pitching prospect in the Minnesota Twins' organization, but Twins fans have yet to see the starter they were promised. Tonight will be Gonsalves' fifth start since getting the call to the big club back in mid-August and he has yet to register anything even resembling a quality start. The left-hander is currently 0-2 with an ERA of 11.68, a WHIP of 3.00, and an incredible opponent's on-base percentage of .528.

Somehow, Gonsalves and the Twins are -120 road favorites tonight in Kansas City against Heath Fillmyer and the Royals. This doesn't say much for the 2018 Royals.

      Windy In D.C.

There will be a 12-13 mile per hour wind blowing in from right field this afternoon when the Nationals host the Chicago Cubs at Nationals Park in D.C.

Today marks the return to the Nationals' rotation of Joe Ross who underwent Tommy John surgery a year ago. In his return he will face a banged-up, slumping Cubs' roster that is averaging only 2.8 runs per game over their last five and tends to be very streaky on both the good side and the bad. Big lefty Mike Montgomery gets the ball for the Cubs and he's been very solid on the road with an ERA of 3.43 this season in 63 innings.

The smart lean tonight in on the Under 9.5 (-125) full game with a sprinkle on Under 8.5 at +120.

      Angel Gets His Wings

We already talked about tonight's game between the A's and Orioles in our Double-Play Picks but it's worth pointing out that Angel Hernandez will be calling balls and strikes and he's been a solid Over umpire this season at 15-11, including Overs in seven of his last nine games in pads.

With the expectation that the A's will dominate and hammer Dylan Bundy tonight, they could go over the full game total of 9 (+100) by themselves. Definitely take a look at Over on Oakland's team total of 4.5, but you'll have to pay a premium at -145.
      Pitcher's Duel In St. Louis

Tonight's game in St. Louis between the Cardinals and the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers features a great pitching matchup between Clayton Kershaw and Austin Gomber.

We are all well aware of Kershaw's awesomeness. His fastball velocity is down slightly this season, but "The Claw" is a pitcher not a thrower - he is currently on a streak of 12 consecutive quality starts heading into Thursday's outing. On the other side, lefty Austin Gomber gets the call for the Cards and he has been tremendous since joining the St. Louis rotation. In his last six starts he owns a very solid ERA of 2.06 and a decent WHIP of 1.3143.

We're looking strongly at the full game Under 7.5 (-105) and Under 4 (-115) for the opening five innings.

                    Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Brewers (11-3 last 14)

Milwaukee is coming off an important road series win at Chicago by taking two of three against the Cubs. The Brewers pulled to within one game of first place on Wednesday, but dropped a half-game on Thursday as the Cubs knocked off the Nationals in extra innings of a make-up contest in D.C. Milwaukee has captured seven consecutive series victories, while the series opener six times in this stretch.

The Brew Crew returns to Miller Park this weekend as Milwaukee welcomes in Pittsburgh. The Brewers grabbed two of three from the Pirates last month at home as southpaw Gio Gonzalez makes his second start for Milwaukee since getting traded from Washington earlier this month. Gonzalez beat the Giants in his Milwaukee debut by allowing one run and three hits in 5.2 innings of a 4-3 victory. Gonzalez lost to Pittsburgh earlier this season as a member of the Nationals in a 2-0 defeat in spite of tossing six innings and scattering six hits.

Coldest team: Phillies (2-9 last 11)

San Francisco currently has the longest losing streak in baseball at 11, but since the Giants are out of the playoff race, we’ll focus on the Phillies. There hasn’t been much fight in Philadelphia lately as the Phillies have slipped out of first place in the NL East and are six games out of a Wild Card spot with two weeks remaining. The Phillies have stunk at home during this stretch by losing nine of their past 11 at Citizens Bank Park, including getting swept by the Nationals this week.

Philadelphia will try to get its act together tonight as Miami invades the City of Brotherly Love. The Marlins have dropped five of six games on its current road trip that started in Pittsburgh and New York. Zack Eflin tries to stop the bleeding for the Phillies as the right-hander is winless in his last four starts, but beat the Marlins at home last month by tossing eight innings in an 8-3 rout.

Hottest pitcher: Masahiro Tanaka, Yankees (11-5, 3.61 ERA)

New York went from undoubtedly hosting a Wild Card game to now maybe traveling to the Oakland Coliseum for its do-or-die game in October. The Yankees and Athletics are on a collision course to meet in the Wild Card game, but New York owns a 1 ½-game edge heading into tonight’s action. Tanaka has been outstanding of late by allowing one run in his last two starts, while striking out 10 in eight scoreless innings of a 4-0 shutout of Seattle his last time out. The Yankees host the Blue Jays as heavy home favorites tonight as Tanaka is 3-1 in his past four starts against Toronto, including a victory in the opening series of the season.

Coldest pitcher: Tyler Anderson, Rockies (6-8, 4.89 ERA)

Colorado still sits atop the NL West following a series victory over Arizona as the Rockies hope to not get tripped up tonight in San Francisco. Anderson has not been reliable of late as the southpaw hasn’t won since July 4 against the Giants when he strung together eight innings of two-hit ball. The Rockies are 1-8 in his last nine trips to the mound, while allowing 25 earned runs in his past five starts. Colorado won seven of Anderson’s first 10 road starts of the season, but the Rockies are 0-3 in his past three outings away from Coors Field.

Biggest OVER run: Athletics (9-3 last 12)

Oakland remains on the east coast after failing to pull off a sweep of Baltimore. The A’s travel to Tampa Bay to square off with a red-hot Rays’ squad that has won 13 of its past 14 games at Tropicana Field. Oakland’s six-game winning streak came to a halt on Thursday as the A’s were limited to less than six runs for the third time in 12 games. Edwin Jackson gets the start against his former team tonight as the A’s have hit the OVER in each of his past two outings. However, the A’s are 4-0-2 to the UNDER in his six road starts this season.

Biggest UNDER run: Angels (8-3 last 11)

The Angels’ offense has dried up of late by scoring two runs or fewer in four of the last five games, while splitting the first four games on their homestand. The Mariners limited the Angels to two runs in last night’s 8-2 blowout, while ending Los Angeles’ four-game UNDER streak. The Angels have won each of Matt Shoemaker’s last two starts since getting activated off the disabled list, while the right-hander makes his first home start of the season. Four of Shoemaker’s past six starts against the Mariners have cashed the OVER since 2016, including two OVERS last season.

Matchup to watch: Diamondbacks vs. Astros

Houston is seeking consecutive World Series titles as the Astros on the doorstep of clinching a playoff spot. The Astros are rolling of late by winning nine of their past 10 games, including pulling off a three-game road sweep of the Tigers with all three victories coming by one run apiece. Houston welcomes in Arizona for a key interleague set as the D-backs took two of three from the Astros at Chase Field in May.

Arizona has slid backwards of late after dropping three of four at home to Atlanta, followed by losing three of four games at Colorado to slip 4 ½ games back of the Rockies in the NL West race. Robbie Ray tries to turn around the Snakes’ luck tonight as the D-backs are 3-7 in the southpaw’s 10 starts since the All-Star break. Arizona is unbeaten in Ray’s last two road starts against the Dodgers and Padres, while the team is 6-4 in his 10 away assignments.

Dallas Keuchel counters for Houston, as the former Cy Young winner was tagged for five runs in six innings of a 6-5 defeat at Boston last Sunday. Keuchel has endured an up and down season following a 14-5 campaign in 2017 as the Astros have lost seven of his past 12 starts at Minute Maid Park. Since dropping nine consecutive home games in July and August, the Astros have regained their home-field advantage by winning eight of their last 11 home contests.

                    Betcha didn’t know:
The Braves are creeping closer to their first NL East title since 2013 following a successful road trip at Arizona and San Francisco. However, home is not where the heart is for Atlanta, who owns a 3-10 record in the past 13 games at SunTrust Park as the Braves welcome in the Nationals tonight. Oh by the way, Cy Young front-runner Max Scherzer takes the hill for the Nationals, but Washington has split his four starts against Atlanta this season.

                    Biggest pubic favorite:
                    Yankees (-280) vs. Blue Jays

                    Biggest public underdog:
                    Cardinals (+112) vs. Dodgers

                    Biggest line move:
Astros (-170 to -190) vs. Diamondbacks

                          Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

                          Streaking:
Cole Hamels, Chicago Cubs (9-9, 3.71 ERA, $338)

Hamels finally wasn’t lights out for the Cubs in his last start, but it was no where near bad enough to not call him our streaking starter for the day.

Hamels allowed three runs on just three hits last time out, but his numbers since joining Chicago are still spectacular. The south paw’s ERA is an outstanding 1.42 with a WHIP of 1.05. He and the Cubs host Matt Harvey and the Reds tonight, where Chicago is currently a -213 home fave.

                          Slumping:
Zach Eflin, Philadelphia Phillies (9-7, 4.42 ERA, $61)

It seems like all of the Phillies started slumping at about the same time and have seen their postseason hopes all but fade off into the sunset.

The Phillies have lost Eflin’s last four starts, where he owns an ERA of 7.71 and a WHIP of 2.04 while allowing opponents to get on base at a .414 clip. Eflin and the Phillies are currently -170 home favorites for tonight’s matchup with the Marlins.

                            • Judge returns, Yankees rout Jays 11-0
                              September 14, 2018
                              By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Aaron Judge returned to the Yankees for the first time since his right wrist was broken seven weeks ago, taking over in right field for the final two innings of New York's 11-0 romp over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night.

Judge had not played since July 26, when he was hit by a pitch from Kansas City's Jakob Junis. The Yankees say for now Judge will be limited to defense and pinch running, but they hope he will become a regular at some point in the regular season's final two weeks.

Masahiro Tanaka (12-5), bidding to start a likely wild-card game against Oakland on Oct. 3, extended his scoreless streak to 20 innings and won his third straight start. Dominating with a sharp splitter, Tanaka struck out eight in six innings and allowed four hits. Luis Cessa got his second save in New York's largest shutout win margin since a 15-0 victory over the Mets on June 14, 2009.

New York improved to 13-4 against Toronto this season. Starting their final homestand, the Yankees remained 1 1/2 games ahead of the Athletics for home field in the wild-card game.

Andrew McCutchen hit his third home run since the Yankees acquired him from San Francisco on Aug. 31. Didi Gregorius also homered for the Yankees.

Marco Estrada (7-12) was the loser.

                              GIANTS 2, ROCKIES 0

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Chris Stratton pitched a two-hitter for his first career shutout, Austin Slater backed him with a two-run single, and San Francisco snapped an 11-game losing streak by beating Colorado.

The NL West-leading Rockies had their division lead trimmed to a half-game over the Los Angeles Dodgers, who won at St. Louis. Colorado had its seven-game winning streak against San Francisco snapped.

Stratton (10-9) struck out seven and walked two, throwing 114 pitches to finish the 2-hour, 20-minute game. He allowed only one baserunner to reach second with Trevor Story getting there in the second.

Tyler Anderson (6-9) hasn't won in 12 starts since beating the Giants on July 4, going 0-6 during that span. He allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings, struck out six and didn't walk a batter.

                              METS 8, RED SOX 0

BOSTON (AP) - Noah Syndergaard pitched seven innings of three-hit ball and New York hit four homers to snap Boston's four-game winning streak.

The Red Sox, who lead the majors with 101 victories, had their lead over the New York Yankees in the AL East reduced to 9 1/2 games. The only team in baseball to have already secured a playoff berth, Boston's magic number to clinch its third straight division title remained at six.

Syndergaard (12-3) struck out six and walked three to lead the Mets to their fourth straight victory and sixth win in their last seven games. Jay Bruce hit a three-run homer in the third, Austin Jackson hit a two-run shot in the eighth, and Jeff McNeil and Amed Rosario had solo shots for New York.

Bruce also had a run-scoring double in the first against Red Sox emergency starter William Cuevas (0-1), who made his first major league start because Hector Velazquez got sick.

                              TIGERS 5, INDIANS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) - Andrew Miller gave up two RBI doubles in the seventh inning as Cleveland's march to the AL Central title was slowed by Detroit.

Miller, making his third appearance since coming off the disabled list, relieved Adam Cimber (0-2) in the seventh, but couldn't stop the Tigers from snapping a 2-2 tie and ending a 10-game losing streak at Progressive Field.

Jeimer Candelario, who homered in the first, doubled home one run and Victor Martinez also doubled off Miller. Josh Donaldson homered and went 2 for 4 in his home debut for Cleveland, and Edwin Encarnacion connected for his 31st homer. Drew VerHagen (3-2) got two outs in the sixth and Greene worked a shaky ninth for his 29th save.

                              ATHLETICS 2, RAYS 1, 10 INNINGS

ST .PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Khris Davis led off the 10th inning with his major league-leading 42nd homer, and Oakland beat Tampa Bay.

Oakland extended its lead for the second AL wild card to nine games over the Rays. The A's remained 1 1/2 games behind the New York Yankees for the first wild card.

Davis' drive to center off Jaime Schultz (2-1) was his 40th this season as a designated hitter. He joins David Ortiz has the only DHs to have 40 or more homers.

Blake Treinen (7-2) went two scoreless innings for the win. Sergio Romo retired all three batters in the ninth in his second appearance for the Rays since Aug. 25.

                              CUBS 3, REDS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Ian Happ hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning, Jorge De La Rosa worked a shaky ninth for his first career save and Chicago beat.

De La Rosa surrendered a one-out double to Curt Casali and walked Billy Hamilton with two down before Scott Schebler flied out to center. It was the first save opportunity for Chicago since Pedro Strop strained his left hamstring trying to beat out a double-play grounder Thursday in a 4-3 victory at Washington, shelving the key reliever for the rest of the regular season.

Ben Zobrist had three hits for NL Central-leading Chicago, which entered with a 1 1/2-game advantage over second-place Milwaukee. After Cole Hamels allowed two runs over 6 2/3 innings, Dillon Maples (1-0) got the final out of the seventh for his first career victory.

David Hernandez (5-1) was the loser.

                              DODGERS 3, CARDINALS 0

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Rookie Walker Buehler allowed two hits in eight innings, Yasiel Puig homered twice and Los Angeles drew even with St. Louis in the NL wild-card race.

Buehler (7-5) pitched beyond the seventh inning for the first time and earned his first victory since Aug. 17.

Puig homered in the second off Jack Flaherty (8-7) and connected again in the ninth off Tyler Webb.

Kenley Jansen hit Yairo Munoz with a pitch to open the ninth but retired the next three batters to finish the two-hitter, earning his 35th save in 39 opportunities.

                              DIAMONDBACKS 4, ASTROS 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Pinch-hitter Jon Jay's tiebreaking triple in the eighth inning helped Arizona beat Houston, tightening a pair of playoff races.

The AL West-leading Astros had their edge cut by Oakland to 2 1/2 games. Arizona moved within three games of St. Louis and Los Angeles for the second NL wild-card spot.

It was 2-all when Nick Ahmed doubled off Hector Rondon (2-4) with one out in the Arizona eighth. Jay hit a two-out, tiebreaking drive into the right field corner and scored when a flyball by A.J. Pollock dropped in shallow center field for a single.

Brad Ziegler (2-6) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings and Yoshihisa Hirano allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth for his second save.

                              BRAVES 10, NATIONALS 5

ATLANTA (AP) - Ronald Acuna Jr. went 4 for 5, had two RBIs and scored the tiebreaking run in the fourth inning to help NL East-leading Atlanta beat Washington for its season-best sixth straight victory.

The Braves stayed 7 1/2 games ahead of second-place Philadelphia. Any combination of nine Atlanta victories or Phillies' losses will give the Braves their first division title since 2013.

Nationals ace Max Scherzer (17-7) endured his shortest outing of the year, four innings, while allowing six runs - a season high - and seven hits in 102 pitches.

Kevin Gausman (10-10) gave up seven hits, two walks and four runs - three earned - in 5 2/3 innings.

                              MARINERS 5, ANGELS 0

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Ryon Healy and Dee Gordon each hit a two-run single and six Seattle relief pitchers combined on a six-hitter.

Roenis Elias gave up just one hit over 3 2/3 innings as a replacement starter for James Paxton, who was sidelined by pneumonia. Adam Warren (3-2) got four outs and Shawn Armstrong, Nick Vincent, Zach Duke and Ryan Cook each pitched an inning.

The Mariners went ahead to stay against Matt Shoemaker (2-1) in the fourth inning. Robinson Cano singled in Mitch Haniger for his 13th RBI in 27 games since being reinstated from an 80-game drug suspension.

With two out and runners on second and third, Healy made it 3-0 with a ground ball into left field.

The Angels nearly got to Elias in the fourth on Mike Trout's deep fly ball to center, but Gordon drifted back to the padded wall and reached up to make the catch before falling onto the warning track.

                              WHITE SOX 8, ORIOLES 6

BALTIMORE (AP) - James Shields picked up his first road victory since opening day and Chicago beat Baltimore on a soggy night.

Ryan Cordell got his first career hit with a homer in the eighth that provided a key insurance run. Omar Narvaez and Avisail Garcia also homered for the White Sox.

Shields (7-16) leads the majors in losses. He allowed two runs and four hits with five strikeouts and one walk over six innings. He had gone winless in his 12 previous road appearances.

Jace Fry contained the Orioles down with a scoreless eighth, setting up Nate Jones to pick up his fifth save.

Luis Ortiz (0-1), obtained in the Jonathan Schoop trade with Milwaukee on July 31, made his first major league start for Baltimore and threw 1 2/3 innings before leaving with an apparent leg injury. Trey Mancini hit two homers for the Orioles.

                              ROYALS 8, TWINS 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Salvador Perez capped Kansas City's five-run ninth inning with a game-ending grand slam, lifting the Royals past Minnesota.

Rosell Herrera sparked the winning rally with a one-out double off Trevor Hildenberger (4-4), who took over as Minnesota's closer after Fernando Rodney was traded to Oakland last month. Whit Merrifield then hit an RBI single and advanced to third on Adalberto Mondesi's base hit.

Manager Paul Molitor then put in Logan Forsythe, giving the Twins five infielders, and Alex Gordon was intentionally walked to load the bases. But Perez thwarted the strategy with a drive to center for his 26th homer. The Twins' loss lowered Cleveland's magic number for clinching the AL Central title to one.

Jason Hammel (3-13) was the winner.

                              BREWERS 7 PIRATES 4

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Christian Yelich, Travis Shaw and Mike Moustakas homered to lead Milwaukee past Pittsburgh.

Orlando Arcia drove in two runs with a bunt double for the Brewers, who stayed 1 1/2 games behind first-place Chicago in the NL Central.

Yelich belted a two-run homer to center off Chris Archer in the first to give the Brewers an early lead. Shaw followed two batters later with a solo shot to make it 3-0.

Corbin Burns (5-0) picked up the win in relief. Jeremy Jeffress worked a scoreless ninth for his 12th save. Orlando Arcia (4-8) was the loser.

Pittsburgh's Pablo Reyes hit his first career homer.

                              PHILLIES 14, MARLINS 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Aaron Altherr homered twice and drove in five runs in Philadelphia's victory over Miami.

Roman Quinn, Rhys Hoskins and Mitch Walding also connected to help the Phillies snap a five-game losing streak. Zach Eflin (10-7) pitched 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball.

J.T. Realmuto homered for Miami. Wei-Yin Chen (6-11) was the loser.

                              RANGERS 4, PADRES 0

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Jurickson Profar had a two-run home run among his three hits and Yohander Mendez followed ''opener'' Connor Sadzeck by scattering three hits in five relief innings to lead Texas past San Diego.

After hitting singles in his first two at-bats, Profar drove the first pitch he saw from Phil Maton into the seats in right with one out in the seventh, his 17th. He drove in two runs and scored twice in the matchup of last-place teams.

Mendez (2-1) struck out five, walked three and was backed by two double plays. Four Rangers pitchers combined to five-hit San Diego.

Padres starter Robbie Erlin (3-7) allowed two runs and six hits in 6 1-3 innings, struck out six and walked none.

LEADING OFF: Cubs lose their closer, Indians try to clinch
                                September 15, 2018
                                By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Saturday:

                                PEN PALS

The Cubs will try a closer-by-committee approach down the stretch after learning Pedro Strop is out for the rest of the regular season because of a strained left hamstring. Strop, who had posted 11 saves since closer Brandon Morrow went on the disabled list in July, hurt himself trying to beat out a double-play grounder this week.

On Friday night, Jorge De La Rosa worked around a double and walk in the ninth inning for his first career save, preserving a 3-2 win over Cincinnati at Wrigley Field. Cubs manager Joe Maddon said he envisions calling on veterans including Steve Cishek, Justin Wilson and Jesse Chavez to finish games.

                                ONE MORE

Mike Clevinger starts at Progressive Field as Cleveland tries to clinch its third straight AL Central title. The Indians have a magic number of one - they can wrap up the division with a win over Detroit, or a loss by Minnesota at Kansas City.

                                RATS!

The New York Mets had an unwelcome visitor to their dugout as their series opened at Fenway Park: a rat that sent the players scurrying away. No word on whether it was the same one that rattled the Red Sox in their dugout on Tuesday night. Boston players paid tribute to their guest Friday night with a (presumably fake) rat skeleton on their dugout railing.

                                GETTING CLOSER

Injured Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman is set to throw a bullpen session, then will pitch a simulated game on Monday. If all goes well, he could be activated in the middle of next week. The New York lefty hasn't pitched in a game since Aug. 21 because of left knee tendinitis.

                                THEY ALL COUNT

All during the month, a lot of September call-ups from the minors will be getting their first hit in the majors. It happened for Mitch Walding of the Phillies on Friday night when he homered - off Miami catcher Bryan Holaday, who was pitching in a blowout. Walding had been 0 for 14 with 10 strikeouts in the big leagues.

''I was speechless,'' Walding said. ''Probably one of the happiest moments I've ever had in my life. ''It was very special and something, obviously, I'll never forget the rest of my life.''

                                FOR STARTERS

The A's and Rays, two of the primary teams using relievers as openers to start games, will employ the strategy against each other for the first time. Tampa Bay will go with Ryne Stanek (2-3) while Oakland counters with Liam Hendriks (0-1) at Tropicana Field.

''It's just trying to take advantage of what you have,'' Athletics manager Bob Melvin said.
