            • Best and worst MLB starting pitchers to bet on in September
              Marc Lawrence

J.A. Happ was having a good season with the Toronto Blue Jays and has thrived in Yankee pinstripes with an ERA under 2.40.

Like our waistlines after a tasty Labor Day barbeque, MLB rosters expand to accommodate September, the final month of the season. And as College Football and the NFL barge onto the scene, MLB pitchers take the final spotlight in hopes of leading their teams on to the playoff trail. The question is which ones can we count on and which ones figure to be candidates for offseason Weight Watchers meetings?

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team starts the last three seasons during the month of September. On the flip side, we’ve also listed pitchers that struggle in September team starts, winning 33% percent or less of their efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each September over the last three years.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s September’s list. Enjoy the games.

              GOOD SEPTEMBER PITCHERS:

              Carlos Carrasco, Cleveland Indians • 11-4 (7-2 H)

Carrasco is once again finishing the season with a flourish. Since July, he has really gotten in an excellent groove and is on pace to have his fourth straight strong year as a starter. Playing mostly weak opponents all month, Carrasco and Cleveland should pile up more wins this month.

              Cole Hamels, Chicago Cubs • 13-4 (7-2 H)

Hamels has stepped right into the Chicago Cubs rotation and has been motivated by the chance to get back to the playoffs. Cubs coaches have fine-tuned Hamels pitch selection and as a result his ERA is 0.69 with Chicago.

              J.A. Happ, New York Yankees • 11-4 (9-0 A)

Happ is another hurler dialed in with a team that is heading to the postseason. The All Star left-hander was having a good season and has thrived in the Yankee pinstripes with an ERA under 2.40. Likely, more winning days ahead.

              * Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers • 12-4 (6-2 A)

Remember all the talk of the “sky is falling” about Kershaw? Let's face it his ERA was almost 3.00, which by human standards is fantastic. But not for Kershaw, evidently. Since coming off the DL he's been dealing and guess what, his ERA this season now matches his career norms. Look for more W's in September.

              Jon Lester, Chicago Cubs • 13-4 (7-2 H)

After a few bumpy starts in July and August, Lester has gotten back on track and looks to be ready to be the clutch pitcher he's been throughout his career. The lefty has actually been tougher on the road, with more strikeouts, fewer walks and lower batting average allowed as compared to at Wrigley.

              Carlos Martinez, St. Louis Cardinals • 11-5 (6-2 A)

Not sure what to expect from Martinez at the moment. He's not pitched since July 30th and been on the DL with shoulder inflammation. His ERA has steadily been rising since June and his walks are way up. Stay tuned.

              Max Scherzer, Washington Nationals • 13-4 (7-0 A)

As great as Mad Max has pitched since 2013, this year is setting up to be his masterpiece, even on a .500 team. Scherzer's at a career-low for ERA, opposing batters are hitting under.190 against him and have an OBP of under .250. This is not supposed to happen to 34-year-old pitchers. #magnificent

              Luis Severino, New York Yankees • 10-1 (4-0 A)

The Yankees ace was pitching like Scherzer before running into trouble the middle of July. There is no doubt he struggled for a long stretch, however, upon closer inspection, his WHIP, batting average allowed and ERA are very close to career norms. Look for Severino to be fine this month. Note: the 10-1 record is also career mark for Severino.

              * Stephen Strasburg, Washington Nationals • 9-1 (3-0 A)

Once again, Strasburg, after a stellar start, landed on the DL. He's made a couple of late August starts and not been impressive. Typically he finds ways to win games late in the season, even without his best stuff. But can this occur every year?

              Josh Tomlin, Cleveland Indians • 10-3 (6-0 A)

Tomlin was terrible early for the Tribe and was sent to the bullpen and later landed on the DL. Unless he comes back and is fantastic, the 33-year might only get a spot start or two to see if he can make the playoff roster.

              * Justin Verlander, Houston Astros • 12-4 (7-2 A)

The Astros right-hander is on pace to produce a magnificent season like he did in 2011-12 and with Detroit. Like the other great pitchers that are Verlander's age, he made the adjustment and has continued to be outstanding.

              BAD SEPTEMBER PITCHERS:

              * Chris Archer, Pittsburgh Pirates • 3-13 (1-9 A)

It turns out Archer is anything but an ace as his career continues to spiral downward. All those years of him just pitching "in tough luck" cannot hide the fact his record is well below .500 and with an ERA to match. Look for more of the same this month.

              Ivan Nova, Pittsburgh Pirates • 3-10 (1-5 A)

Month by month, Nova has had an 'incredible' season. His first month he's at a 3.37 ERA, which is followed by 7.51. Nova rebounds exceptionally at 1.75 in June and July he's back up to 5.53. August gave us 4.44. September?

              * Chris Sale, Boston Red Sox • 5-10 (2-5 H)

Boston fans and backers have to be concerned with Sale being on the DL twice since July. Their near perfect season could take a major hit if Sale is not pitching well come late September before the playoffs. Buyer beware.

              Jordan Zimmermann, Detroit Tigers • 3-7 (2-5 H)

Zimmerman was on the “Play On” September list last year, but a winless September in 2017 bounces him to the “Play Against” category this season. Similar to other pitchers on this list, Zimmermann is a roller-coaster ride. Here we go again!

                By Joe Williams

                Bringing Their 'A' Game

The Oakland Athletics posted five runs in the first inning on Friday, but frittered the lead away against the Seattle Mariners. It was tied 5-5 after five innings, but the A's rallied and posted a run in the fifth and a run in the sixth to take the game 7-5. As such, the A's continue to nip at the heels of the first-place Astros, sitting just 1 1/2 games back of the defending champs in the American League West. In addition, the A's are keeping the Mariners are arm's length, as Seattle finds themselves seven games back of the Astros despite being 15 games over .500. If the M's are going to play into the postseason, it likely will have to be either winning the division, or at least leapfrogging the A's.

Seattle sends LHP James Paxton to the hill against Oakland RHP Daniel Mengden on Saturday. The Mariners are sinking lately, pun totally intended, as they have dropped four of their past five road games and two of their past seven against a right-handed starter. The good news is that the M's are 13-6 over Paxton's past 19 against a team with a winning record. The A's are 6-2 over Mengden's past eight outings at home, 4-1 in his past five against teams with a winning record and 6-2 in his past eight at home against a winning side. However, the A's are a dismal 3-14 over his past 17 starts inside the AL West. Despite Friday's loss, Seattle is still 21-9 in their past 30 trips to Oakland, and 16-7 over the past 23 meetings overall. The under has hit in eight of the past 10 meetings, including six of the past eight in Oakland.

                HOT OR NOT

                Team Streak Team Over/Under

Chicago White Sox 12-5 past 17 games overall Boston Over 7-3-1 past 11 games

Cincinnati 1-8 past nine games overall L.A. Angels Under 4-1 past five games

St. Louis 18-4 past 22 games overall Milwaukee Over 5-2 past seven games

Tampa Bay 9-2 past 11 games overall St. Louis Under 10-4-1 past 15 games

Texas 0-5 past five games overall Tampa Bay Over 5-2-1 past eight games

                Looking Ahead

                Saturday, Sept. 1

The red-hot Rays and AL Central-leading Indians will square off at Progressive Field on Saturday evening. LHP Blake Snell takes the ball for the Rays, while RHP Shane Bieber goes for the Tribe. Tampa Bay has been on fire lately against right-handed starters, going 9-2 over thei past 11 meetings. They're also 18-7 in the past 25 against teams with a winning overall record, and they're 4-1 in the past five against the AL Central. Tampa Bay sounds like a great side to support, as they're also 4-0 in Snell's past four outings, and 5-0 in his past five against winning teams. However, the Rays are just 10-21 in their past 31 road games against right-handed starters, and a dismal 6-15 in their past 21 road outings against a winning team.

For Cleveland, they're 4-1 in their past five overall, while going 75-35 across the past 110 games at Progressive Field. While they have won four of their past five starts with Bieber on the hill, the Indians are 0-4 in their past four tries against a southpaw. Total bettors might be pounding the 'under', which is a perfect 8-0 across Snell's past eight road outings, and 5-0 in his past five on the road against winning teams. The under is 6-0-1 in Cleveland's past seven at home, and 5-1 in their past six tries vs. LHP. The under is also 4-1-1 in Bieber's past six outings.

It's a battle of southpaws with Diamondbacks LHP Patrick Corbin and Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw butting heads at Chavez Ravine. The Snakes are 6-1 in Corbin's past seven outings, and 7-2 in his past nine on the road. The Dodgers have won six of the past seven overall, and they're 36-16 in their past 52 at home vs. LHP. The Dodgers are also 40-13 in their past 53 with Kershaw facing a team with a winning overall record. The 'under' is listed at seven, and the result might be way lower. The under is a perfect 7-0 in the past seven for Arizona, and 6-0 in their past six on the road. The under is also 6-0 in their past six against NL West foes, and 13-3 in their past 16 on the road against teams with a winning home mark. The under is 6-1-1 in the past eight road outings by Corbin. The over is actually 3-1-1 in Kershaw's past five outings, but 8-3-1 in L.A.'s past 12 at home, and 40-18-2 in Kershaw's past 60 when facing a winning side.

                Weather Report

The wind will be kicking up at AT&T Park, something we've seen frequently this season. There will be a 13-17 mph jetstream from home plate to straightaway center field to affect the Mets and Giants. Also in the bay area, the M's and A's will be negotiating winds blowing from 12-15 mph out to straightaway center field as well.

On the south side of Chicago, the Red Sox and White Sox won't have to deal with wind, but they'll be dodging the raindrops. There is a 40 percent or greater chance of strosm from 7pm-10pm CDT, tailing off later in the evening.

Wind will also be a factor for the Orioles and Royals, blowing 11-14 mph out to left field. Wind will affect the Twins and Rangers, but it will be a hot wind blowing into the face of the batters from left field at a 10-13 mph clip.

                Sunday, Sept. 2

After lefty-on-lefty crime Saturday, it will be a pair of righties on the bump for the Diamondbacks and Dodgers on Saturday. RHP Clay Buchholz faces RHP Walker Buehler. The Snakes are 6-2 over Buchholz's past eight outings, and they're 7-2 in the past nine vs. RHP. In addition, Arizona is 4-1 in their past five against righties. For L.A., they're 11-5 in their past 16 at Dodger Stadium against right-handed starting pitchers. The under is 4-0 in Buchholz's past four, and 5-1 in his past six outings on the road. The under is also 7-3 in the past 10 at home for Los Angeles, and 4-0 in their past four at home with Buehler on the hill. The under is also 4-1 in Buehler's past five inside the division.

On Sunday night, Angels 'rookie' RHP Shohei Ohtani will toe the slab against Astros RHP Gerrit Cole in an intriguing pitching matchup. The Halos aren't going very well, but they're 5-1 in Ohtani's past six starts and 4-0 in his past four inside the division. Houston has had trouble at home, and inside the division lately. They're a stunning 3-12 in the past 15 at Minute Maid Park heding into Saturday's contest, and 1-4 in Cole's past five against AL West foes. They are an impressive 8-2 in his past 10 outings at home, however, and 5-0 in his past five at home against teams with a losing overall record.

                Weather Report

The Cubs and Phillies might have a hard time getting start, as there is a 60 percent chance of thunderstorms from 2-4pm ET. They might be able to get underway, but a lengthy delay could occur. The weather is expected to roll in for the O's and Royals, too, but they should be able to get an official game in.

The Mets and Giants will again be dealing with a strong wind to the left-center field power alley, gusting up to 17 mph at times. In Oakland, the M's and A's will again face winds from 11-14 mph, but blowing to the right-center field power alley this time around.

                  • Bryant has 2 hits in return from DL, Cubs beat Phillies
                    September 1, 2018

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Kyle Hendricks pitched six strong innings, Javier Baez notched his NL-leading 99th RBI and Kris Bryant doubled and had two hits in his return from the disabled list to lead the Chicago Cubs past the Philadelphia Phillies 7-1 on Saturday night.

Ian Happ homered and Baez had three hits for the NL Central-leading Cubs, who have won nine of 11.

Bryant had been sidelined since July 23 with left shoulder inflammation. The 2016 NL MVP doubled and scored in the third and singled in the eighth.

Hendricks (11-10) allowed one run on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Nick Williams had two hits and an RBI for the Phillies, who fell three games behind first-place Atlanta in the NL East.

The Cubs, helped by another Phillies error, scored a pair of runs in the first off Zach Eflin (9-6).

                    DODGERS 3, DIAMONDBACKS 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Matt Kemp slugged a go-ahead, two-strike, three-run homer in the eighth inning, lifting Los Angeles over Arizona and into a tie atop the NL West.

With fans on their feet chanting ''Let's go Dodgers,'' Kemp took two quick strikes from Archie Bradley before launching his 19th homer into center field for a 3-2 lead.

Justin Turner got the rally going with one out in the inning. He singled for the Dodgers' first hit since his double in the third. Manny Machado followed with a 10-pitch walk by Bradley to set up Kemp.

Bradley (4-5) was leading the National League in holds with 31 before Kemp's homer.

Kenta Maeda (8-8) worked a perfect eighth. Kenley Jansen put the tying run on in the ninth. The All-Star closer gave up a two-out double to Nick Ahmed before Ketel Marte popped up to second, giving Jansen his 34th save in 38 opportunities.

                    MARINERS 8, ATHLETICS 7

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - James Paxton returned from the disabled list to strike out 10 batters over five innings, Ben Gamel hit a two-run double and Seattle held off Oakland.

Jean Segura had a two-run single in the fifth, an inning after he was hit by a pitch. He finished with three hits, helping Seattle pull within 4+ games of Oakland for the second AL wild card.

Khris Davis hit his majors-leading 40th home run to start the eighth for Oakland, giving him three straight 40-homer seasons.

Edwin Diaz walked Jed Lowrie to begin the ninth and put the tying run aboard, and then recovered to strike out the side for his club-record 51st save in 55 opportunities.

Reliever Liam Hendriks (0-1), a September call-up, started as the first of nine Oakland pitchers and took the loss.

Paxton (11-5) took the mound for the first time since getting hit on his left forearm by a line drive Aug. 14 at Oakland. He allowed three runs on two hits and walked four.

                    YANKEES 2, TIGERS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Masahiro Tanaka pitched seven strong innings for his first win since July, rookie Gleyber Torres hit a two-run homer and New York beat Detroit.

The Yankees got only two hits, but won for the 11th time in 15 games. New York has the second-best record in the majors, behind AL East-leading Boston.

Andrew McCutchen went 0 for 3 and struck out twice in his Yankees debut. The former NL MVP batted leadoff and played right field, a day after being acquired from San Francisco.

Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez, who missed nearly six weeks with a recurring groin injury, went 0 for 4.

Tanaka (10-5) gave up one run and seven hits for his first victory since July 31. He was 0-3 with a 4.40 ERA in five August starts.

Jonathan Holder pitched a scoreless eighth and Dellin Betances notched his second save in the ninth.

Torres connected in the fifth off Daniel Norris (0-3).

                    ASTROS 7, ANGELS 3

HOUSTON (AP) - Tyler White hit a go-ahead two-run double in a five-run eighth inning, Alex Bregman homered and Houston beat Los Angeles.

With the score tied in the eighth, White hit a pitch to left field off Hansel Robles that missed being a home run by just feet. The ball bounced off the top of the metal scoreboard and back into left field. George Springer and Carlos Correa came around to score, putting the Astros ahead 5-3.

Correa drove in the tying run earlier in the eighth with an RBI single to center off Cam Bedrosian (5-4).

Joe Smith (5-1) got the win after giving up one hit and striking out one in two-thirds of an inning.

The Angels bullpen wasted one of Felix Pena's best starts. Pena gave up just two runs in seven innings, the longest start of his career.

RED SOX 6, WHITE SOX 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Eduardo Rodriguez struck out 12 in 5 2/3 innings in his return from an ankle injury, leading Boston past Chicago.

Jackie Bradley Jr., Ian Kinsler and Eduardo Nunez homered as AL East-leading Boston maintained its 7+-game lead over the New York Yankees. The Red Sox won for the fourth time in five games to run the majors' best record to 94-43, already one more victory than they had when they won the division each of the past two years.

Rodriguez (12-3) allowed one run and three hits in his first major league appearance since he sprained his right ankle while covering first against Toronto on July 14. The left-hander retired his first 12 batters, striking out 10.

Carlos Rodon (6-4) kept the White Sox in the game for a while before committing a costly error in the seventh. With one out and runners on second and third, the lefty fielded Andrew Benintendi's comebacker and threw wildly to first, allowing Christian Vazquez to come home.

                    RAYS 5, INDIANS 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Blake Snell moved into a tie for the major league lead with his 17th win as Tampa Bay beat Cleveland.

Snell (17-5) allowed two runs in 6 2/3 innings, giving up both runs in the second with one being unearned thanks to a throwing error by third baseman Matt Duffy. The left-hander worked around trouble early in the game, but retired nine of the last 10 hitters he faced and struck out the side in the sixth.

Snell is tied with New York's Luis Severino and Cleveland's Corey Kluber - two other top candidates for the AL Cy Young Award - for the most wins in the majors.

Tampa Bay scored four times in the sixth off Shane Bieber (8-3). Matt Duffy tied the game with a two-run double. Tommy Pham's RBI double put the Rays ahead before Kevin Kiermaier added a run-scoring single.

Jason Kipnis, whose playing time will decrease after the Indians acquired third baseman Josh Donaldson from Toronto on Friday, started the ninth with a pinch-hit home run off Chaz Roe.

Roe retired the next two hitters and Adam Kolarek got pinch-hitter Yonder Alonso for his second save.

                    BRAVES 5, PIRATES 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Freddie Freeman hit a tiebreaking, RBI double in the four-run eighth inning, and NL East-leading Atlanta rallied to snap a three-game skid and beat Pittsburgh.

The Braves increased their division lead by three games over Philadelphia. They had dropped five of six overall and seven of eight at home.

After Dansby Swanson's 14th homer cut the lead to 3-2, pinch-hitter Lucas Duda doubled and was replaced by pinch-runner Lane Adams, who advanced to third on Ronald Acuna Jr.'s sacrifice fly.

Adams scored when Ender Inciarte reached safely after striking out on a wild pitch. Inciartie scored on Freeman's double, and Freeman advanced to third on a single and slid safely across the plate to beat a tag attempt on Johan Camargo's sacrifice fly.

All four runs were charged to Keone Kela (3-4), who had allowed just one run in his first 14 games, a stretch of 14 innings, with Pittsburgh.

Jonny Venters (2-0) got the win after facing two batters in the eighth. Braves closer A.J. Minter faced the minimum in the ninth to earn his 12th save in 14 chances.

                    NATIONALS 5, BREWERS 4

WASHINGTON (AP) - Juan Soto's two-run single highlighted a four-run eighth inning, and Washington rallied past Milwaukee.

With Washington trailing 3-1 in the eighth, Adam Eaton capped a nine-pitch at-bat with a two-out double off Joakim Soria (1-1). Trea Turner then lofted a single to left to make it 3-2. After Turner stole second Bryce Harper and Anthony Rendon walked to load the bases.

Milwaukee's Dan Jennings came on to face Soto, who singled up the middle on a 2-2 pitch, scoring Turner and Harper with his third hit of the night. Rendon then scored on a wild pitch by Jordan Lyles.

Washington's Greg Holland (1-2) retired Manny Pina with the bases loaded to end the eighth and Justin Miller survived Tyler Saladino's pinch-hit solo homer in the ninth for his second save.

The game was delayed 1 hour, 57 minutes by rain in the top of the eighth and ended well past midnight.

                    ROCKIES 4, PADRES 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) - D.J. LeMahieu homered and Jon Gray pitched six solid innings as Colorado snapped San Diego's season-high four-game winning streak.

The Rockies broke a 21-inning scoreless string with a three-run fourth when they strung together four straight hits, the biggest one being LeMahieu's 13th homer.

Gray (11-7) allowed two runs and seven hits as the Rockies won for the 10th time in his last 11 starts. The right-hander hung two pitches that Hunter Renfroe hit for homers but otherwise he kept the Padres at bay.

Adam Ottavino and Scott Oberg worked an inning each and Wade Davis pitched the ninth for his 37th save.

Robbie Erlin (3-5) lasted 5 1/3 innings, charged with four runs, seven hits and one walk. The left-hander struck out seven in absorbing his second straight loss.

                    METS 2, GIANTS 1, 11 INNINGS

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Steven Matz struck out a career-high 11 batters, and New York went on to beat San Francisco.

Wilmer Flores doubled to left off Giants reliever Hunter Strickland (3-4) to lead off the 11th. He went to third when Jay Bruce grounded out to second against the shift, and scored on Todd Frazier's fly ball to left.

Jerry Blevins (2-2) pitched a scoreless 10th and Robert Gsellman worked the 11th for his ninth save.

Brandon Nimmo made a diving catch in right field, robbing Austin Slater of a hit to end the game.

The Mets have won six of their last seven games at AT&T Park.

Matz gave up one run in seven innings of three-hit ball.

                    REDS 4, CARDINALS 0

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Luis Castillo and two relievers combined on a two-hitter to lead Cincinnati past St. Louis.

The Reds snapped a three-game losing streak.

St. Louis, which won a major league-best 22 games in August, lost for the second time in six games. The Cardinals fell 4 1/2 games behind Chicago in the NL Central.

Castillo (8-11) gave up two hits and struck out a career-high 11 in 6 2/3 innings. He gave up a leadoff single to Matt Carpenter in the first before retiring 15 of the next 16 hitters.

David Hernandez and Raisel Iglesias completed the two-hitter.

Suarez keyed a three-run outburst against Daniel Poncedeleon (0-1) in the fourth.

                    RANGERS 7, TWINS 4

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Adrian Beltre hit his 470th career homer after 23-year-old sluggers Nomar Mazara and Ronald Guzman went deep, helping the Texas stop a five-game losing streak with a win over Minnesota.

Mazara led off the second inning with his 18th home run and second in as many nights, matching his total from the previous 42 games. Guzman's 13th homer was a three-run shot that capped a four-run second to put the Rangers ahead for good at 4-2.

Beltre's homer leading off the fourth was the 39-year-old's eighth of the season and hit No. 3,143 for his career, breaking a tie with Robin Yount for 17th on the career list.

Yovani Gallardo (8-3) ended a streak of three winless starts, giving up six hits and three runs in five innings. Jose Leclerc struck out two in a perfect ninth for his eighth save in 12 opportunities.

Jose Berrios (11-10) struck out six in four innings, but all three hits he allowed were homers. He gave up five runs.

                    ROYALS 5, ORIOLES 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Whit Merrifield hit a two-run homer with one out in the ninth inning, giving Kansas City a back-and-forth victory over Baltimore.

The Orioles went ahead off Jake Newberry (1-0) in the top of the ninth, when Trey Mancini homered to lead off and Tim Beckham added a two-run double, his fourth hit of the night.

Mychael Givens (0-7) came on to close it out, but he walked Brett Phillips on four pitches to lead off the inning. Cam Gallagher sacrificed Phillips to second, and Merrifield cracked an 0-2 pitch an estimated 415 feet to left field for the first game-winning homer of his career.

Kansas City has won six of seven on its homestand, its best seven-game stretch since July 2017, including the first two of this three-game series between the worst teams in the majors.

                    MARLINS 6, BLUE JAYS 3

MIAMI (AP) - Martin Prado hit a bases-clearing double in his first game in three weeks, Wei-Yin Chen pitched eight strong innings and Miami beat Toronto.

J.T. Realmuto hit his 18th home run and Brian Anderson knocked in two for the Marlins, who snapped a four-game skid.

Chen (6-9) allowed one run on three hits. He struck out seven without walking a batter.

Prado, who had been on the disabled list with an injured quad, delivered a bases-clearing double to left-center field in the fifth inning to give the Marlins a 6-1 lead.

Marco Estrada (7-11) allowed eight hits and six runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a football Saturday

                      13) Oakland Raiders traded star LB Khalil Mack to the Bears Saturday, getting two first round picks in return. Consensus on the Interweb is that this is a good trade for Chicago. Teams also swapped four other draft picks; Bears got a 2nd round pick in 2020, Raiders got a 3rd.

This says that Jon Gruden has all the power in Oakland; GM Reggie McKenzie and owner Mark Davis were supposedly not real anxious to trade Mack, but they also weren’t close to signing him to a new contract, either.

Chicago quickly gave Mack a 6-year, $141M contract extension. After the trade was announced, Bears dropped from 100-1 to 40-1 to win the Super Bowl; Raiders went from 20-1 to 40-1.

                      12) Auburn 21, Washington 16- Huskies gained 398 yards, but scored only one TD; they were 5-14 on 3rd down, -2 in turnovers and missed a short FG. SEC teams are now 9-3 in their last 12 games against Pac-12 opponents.

                      11) Penn State 45, Appalachian State 38, OT— 11 years ago this weekend, App State won at Michigan, when the Wolverines were #5 in country. App State was a I-AA team then; they’re in the Sun Belt now, and was a 24-point underdog here- they scored 28 points in 4th quarter after trailing 24-10, but the Nittany Lions tied the game with 0:42 left and avoided the upset in OT.

                      10) Cincinnati 26, UCLA 17— 6:00 left in the game, Cincy led 19-17; UCLA had 4th-and-1 from its own 36 with a true freshman (backup) QB playing, and the Bruins went for it, threw the ball, and failed miserably. Poor start to the Chip Kelly era in Westwood.

                      9) Maryland 34, Texas 29— For second year in a row, Terrapins upset Texas as a double-digit underdog; this game was delayed a while by stormy weather.

                      8) Michigan State 38, Utah State 31— Spartans were favored by 23.5, but needed a 13-yard TD with 2:00 left to hold off the gritty Aggies, who threw for 319 yards and look to be an improved team this season.

                      7) I-A teams that lost to I-AA teams:
                      — San Jose State (-2.5) lost 44-38 to Cal-Davis.
                      — Temple (-14.5) lost 19-17 to Villanova.
                      — UTEP (+7) lost 30-10 to Northern Arizona.
                      — Kansas (-9) lost 26-23 in OT to Nicholls State.

                      6) Rutgers 35, Texas State 7— Bobcats’ only score came on a pick-6; they had zero INT’s all of last season, which is hard to believe. Not sure I’ve ever heard of a team going thru an entire season with no INT’s. Bobcats were -15 in turnovers LY, -14 the year before, going 2-10 both seasons. Hard to win with terrible turnover margins.

                      5) West Virginia 40, Tennessee 14- Will Grier passed for 429 yards, five TD’s, as Mountaineers opened their season with a decisive win on a neutral field in Charlotte. Total yardage in this game was 547-301.

                      4) Illinois 31, Kent State 24— Huge sigh of relief from Champaign; Illini trailed this game 17-3 at the half. Total yardage was 469-453, not a good omen for the Illini’s Big 14 hopes.

                      3) Ole Miss 47, Texas Tech 27— Signing Day for college football is usually the first Wednesday in February; every year on day after Signing Day, I ask here why Texas Tech doesn’t sign more defensive players, and then in the fall, when their defense sucks, I ask again.

Last two years, Texas Tech lost eight games that they scored 30+ points in.

                      2) Buffalo Bills cut WR Corey Coleman, who they acquired from Cleveland this month; Bills now have $50M of dead money on their salary cap- next highest is Dallas, with $26M in dead money.

                      1) Cowboys’ TE Rico Gathers was arrested on suspicion of marijuana possession by police in Frisco, TX Friday, as he sat on the bubble to make the Dallas roster. No bueno.

Gathers played basketball at Baylor; not sure what else to say here, other than your job as a player is to give the team reasons to keep you, not reasons to cut you.

Somehow, Gathers still made the Cowboys’ 53-man roster; we’ll see if he sticks.

                      • LEADING OFF: Angels' Ohtani returns to mound, Nola vs Lester
                        September 1, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Sunday:

                        SHO TIME

Angels rookie Shohei Ohtani is set to pitch again, and will start at night against the Astros at Minute Maid Park. The two-way sensation from Japan hasn't been on the mound in the majors since spraining the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow nearly three months ago.

Ohtani excelled in his first nine starts before getting hurt, going 4-1 with a 3.10 ERA. He's continued to do well at the plate as a designated hitter.

Gerrit Cole (12-5, 2.85) starts for AL West-leading Houston.

                        ACES

It's a marquee matchup at Citizens Bank Park when Aaron Nola (15-3, 2.10 ERA) starts for playoff-contending Philadelphia vs. lefty Jon Lester (14-5, 3.67) and the NL Central-leading Cubs. Nola has given up more than two runs just once in his last 12 starts, building his case for the Cy Young Award.

                        START HIM UP

Twins manager Paul Molitor says he will use a reliever as the starter in the series finale at Texas, and is leaning toward lefty Gabriel Moya. Molitor said Zack Littell, who has been with Triple-A Rochester since early July, likely will be used as the next pitcher.

It would be the 23-year-old Moya's first career start after 31 relief appearances over two seasons. Moya pitched a scoreless inning Friday in a 10-7 win. Littell, a 22-year-old righty, made his major league debut in June and was primarily a starter in the minors.

''I talked to Zack today about it and I gave him a little heads-up before I talked to the pitchers as a whole, just in case you guys were asked about what he was going to do and he didn't know,'' Molitor said. ''I think he said two or three times where he's gone through it.''

                        AILING

Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford has missed two straight starts. Manager Bruce Bochy says Crawford has a sore left knee, among other minor ailments.

Remember the 3 G's Gambling, Golf, Girls not in any particular order.....
