Hottest team: Cardinals (9-1 last 10)

Less than a month ago, St. Louis sat with a .500 record at 51-51 after dropping two of three at Cincinnati. The Cardinals have caught fire ever since by winning 14 of their last 18 games, including seven consecutive victories. St. Louis pulled off a three-game sweep of rival Kansas City last weekend, followed by a pair of home wins over a fading Washington squad to pull within four games of first place Chicago in the NL Central.

The Redbirds have done most of their damage of late from the plate by scoring at least six runs in each of their last six wins. Austin Gomber takes the mound for the Cardinals in the third game of their four-game set with the Nationals tonight as the southpaw is coming off a five-inning scoreless effort against Kansas City in his past start.

Coldest team: Astros (0-5 last five)

The wheels are falling off the wagon for the defending champion Astros, who haven’t won a home game since July 14. Amazingly, Houston hasn’t picked up a victory at Minute Maid Park in the second half of the season by compiling an 0-8 mark in its last eight home contests. The latest setback came in Tuesday’s 5-1 loss to the Rockies as a -200 favorite, marking eight units lost by Houston in the last four home games alone.

Houston’s offense can take blame for this recent skid by scoring three runs or less in seven of the past eight games, while Jose Altuve and George Springer remain sidelined. The Astros try to pick up a split of their two-game set with the Rockies as Gerrit Cole looks to not only end the team’s skid, but his own personal slump. Cole is winless in his last three starts, while allowing seven earned runs in his past two outings.

Hottest pitcher: Robbie Erlin, Padres (2-3, 3.36 ERA)

San Diego is coming off a successful series against Philadelphia this past weekend, but the Padres are on the verge of getting swept by the Angels at home. Erlin is coming off a pair of solid performances as a road underdog as the Padres beat the Cubs and Brewers on their recent road trip. The southpaw tossed five innings in each of those two starts, including allowing two hits and one earned run in a 6-1 victory at Chicago. Erlin is seeking his first win at Petco Park since September 2015 against Arizona, but the Padres are 2-6 this season when trying to avoid a home sweep.

Coldest pitcher: Jose Urena, Marlins (3-12, 4.74 ERA)

Urena won 14 games last season, but has dropped 12 decisions in 2018 as he seeks his fourth win of the season tonight in Atlanta. The Miami right-hander has yielded 16 hits and 10 earned runs in his past two starts, losses to division rivals New York and Philadelphia. Urena was knocked around by Atlanta the last time he faced them in late July by giving up five earned runs in a 12-1 defeat. In three starts this season against the Braves, Urena is 0-3, but the Marlins are 4-3 in his past seven outings.

Biggest OVER run: Reds (5-1 last six)

Cincinnati’s offense carried them from June through July, but the runs are drying up. The Reds have been limited to six runs in the last three losses to the Diamondbacks and Indians after scoring six against Arizona last Saturday. The reason for this recent OVER run has been poor pitching as the Reds have given up 9, 10, and 8 runs the past three games. The Reds try to avoid the sweep against the Indians tonight as Robert Stephenson makes his second start this season for Cincinnati. Stephenson lasted four innings in an 8-0 loss to the Mets his last time out, while he opposes Cleveland’s Shane Bieber, who is riding a three-start UNDER streak.

Biggest UNDER run: Twins (6-1 last seven)

Minnesota bounced back from a tough road trip to rally past Pittsburgh, 5-2 on Tuesday to cash its fourth straight UNDER. The offense didn’t produce more than four runs in any of their previous seven games prior to last night’s victory. Minnesota seeks the two-game sweep of Pittsburgh as both teams send out strong right-handers to the mound as Jose Berrios opposes Chris Archer. Berrios has suffered plenty of ups and downs since late June as the Twins are 3-5 in his past eight starts, while the OVER has hit in his last two home outings.

Matchup to watch: Giants vs. Dodgers

The heated rivalry between San Francisco and Los Angeles reached another boiling point on Tuesday as Dodgers’ outfielder Yasiel Puig was ejected after starting a benches-clearing brawl following a scuffle with Giants’ catcher Nick Hundley. The Giants knocked off the Dodgers for the second straight night with a ninth-inning rally as San Francisco broke a 1-1 tie to pick up a 2-1 victory as +175 underdogs.

The Giants seek the sweep of the Dodgers tonight at Chavez Ravine as San Francisco has won each of Derek Holland’s last three starts. Holland wasn’t sharp in his past outing against Pittsburgh by giving up 10 hits and five runs in 6.1 innings of a 13-10 victory. The Giants have dropped two of Holland’s three starts against the Dodgers this season, but San Francisco has won five of nine matchups at Los Angeles.

Los Angeles is in the midst of a five-game skid as Hyun-Jin Ryu tries to put the Dodgers back on the winning track. Ryu is making his first start since May 2 as he has been sidelined with a groin injury. The left-hander put up a solid 2.12 ERA in his first six starts of the season, which included a no-decision against the Giants in a 6-4 loss on April 27. The Dodgers are looking to avoid their second home sweep of the season as Cincinnati pulled the broom on Los Angeles in a four-game set back in May.

Betcha didn’t know: The Mets were tripped up by the Orioles on Tuesday, but New York sends out right-hander Zack Wheeler to the mound tonight. Wheeler is undefeated in his last six starts for New York, while tossing at least seven innings in four of his past five outings. The last time Wheeler faced the Orioles at Citi Field earlier this season, he scattered three hits in seven scoreless innings, but the Mets dropped a 1-0 decision.

Biggest public favorite: Braves (-220) vs. Marlins

Biggest public underdog: Phillies (+105) vs. Red Sox

Biggest line move: Padres (-115 to -125) vs. Angels

    • Diamond Trends - Wednesday
      Vince Akins

SU Play ON Trend of the Day:

-- The Orioles are 17-0 SU in the last game of a series vs a team that is not on a five-plus game winning streak when they are off a home game in which they scored more runs off the bullpen than they did off the starter and it is post All-Star break

SU Play AGAINST Trend of the Day:

-- The Pirates are 0-12 SU as a dog in the last game of a series when their starters have produced quality starts for three straight and it is post All-Star break.

      Hitter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- The Indians are 13-0 SU as a road 140+ favorite after a game as a road favorite in which Jose Ramirez hit a home run. Since July, Cleveland has outscored their opponent by an average of 10.8 to 3.2 runs

      Starter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- The Dodgers are 10-0 SU when Hyun Jin Ryu starts as a 140+ favorite and he had more strikeouts than hits allowed in his last start. LA is 8-0 their last 8 on the run-line in this spot.

        Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

        Streaking:
Zack Wheeler, New York Mets (7-6, 3.82 ERA, $-138)

Winning games as a starting pitcher for the New York Metropolitans is hard, just ask Jacob deGrom, so that fact that Zack Wheeler has won five consecutive starts (team wins in six straight) is truly impressive. From an individual stats perspective he's been "lights out" in his last three outings with an ERA of 0.90, a WHIP of 0.75, an opponent's on-base percentage of .200, and 24 strikeouts with only three walks.

Wheeler and the Mets have another winnable game today as -130 favorites in Baltimore against Dylan Bundy and the Orioles.

        Slumping:
        Jose Urena, Miami Marlins (3-12, 4.74, $-889)

The Miami Marlins are who we thought they were - terrible at, pretty much, every aspect of baseball. Jose Urena is supposed to be their ace but it must be really difficult with Double-A players at almost every position on the field. Urena will mix in a gem occassionally, like he did against the Nationals a couple of weeks ago, but mostly things have not gone well for the righty. Over his last five starts, including six innings of shutout pitching against the Nats, he's dealing with an ERA of 7.40 and a WHIP of 1.6438.

Urena will hope to have one of his "don't forget about me" outings today as a +195 underdog in Atlanta against Kevin Gausman and the Braves.

        Amazing Acuña

It’s hard to fathom just how hot Braves rookie Ronald Acuña Jr. is right now. The 20-year-old in his first big league season has hit eight home runs in the last eight games and is the youngest player ever to homer in five consecutive games, which includes a leadoff dinger in the last three games. Oh, and over the last eight games he’s hitting a measly .471 with a 1.749 OPS!!! Just, wow.

That doesn’t bode well for today’s slumping starter Jose Urena, who has a first inning ERA of 4.30. We like Acuña and the NL East leading Braves to stay hot, making Bottom 1st Run: Yes (+150) a strong (and fun) play here.

Houston, We Have a (Home) Problem

What is going on in Houston? The Astros have now lost nine consecutive games at Minute Maid Park and lead the surging A’s by just one game in the AL West. The Astros starters haven’t been as ridiculously good as they were early on, but they’re not the problem here as it’s Houston’s bats that have gone silent.

During the home losing skid, the are scoring just 2.8 runs per game and since the All-Star break the Astros rank 27th in runs scored and OPS, and 28th in batting average. With the Astros bats in a funk and Gerrit Cole on the bump, look at the Under 7.5 in the Astros matchup with Rockies tonight.

        Hell(ickson) of an Under Run

Nationals starter Jeremy Hellickson has found at least some of the form from his early days in Tampa Bay, producing his lowest ERA since 2012. The result? The Under is 14-2 in his last 16 starts.

Hellickson’s ERA is solid at 3.54, but it’s his WHIP that’s really impressive at 1.07 as he is once again creating the soft contact that made him so successful in the past. The Under First 5 Innings is always the play in Hellickson’s starts so to avoid the awful Nats bullpen. Today against the Carindals Under 5 is -130.

              Quote of the Day
“I think (Josh) Allen is trash. I don’t care what nobody say. He’s trash. And it’s gonna show too. That’s a stupid draft pick to me. We play them this year, and I’m excited as hell. I hope he’s their starting quarterback. He played at Wyoming. Every time they played a big school — like, they played Iowa State, which is not a big school in my opinion because I went to Florida State, and he threw five interceptions, and they lost by a couple touchdowns or something like that. He never beat a big school…..”

              *********************

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…..

              13) By the end of the week, Colorado Rockies will have played their last 46 games against teams with an above .500 record, which will tie the all-time NL record. The all-time major league record is 51 games in a row.

Rockies play San Diego on Tuesday, which will end their streak.

              12) Umpire Joe West has now worked 5,164 major league games, passing Bruce Froemming for second place on the all-time list.

Bill Kelm holds the all-time record, at 5,369.

              11) Long time ago (1989-90), I worked in a county courthouse for 10 months; my job was a court assistant, swearing in witnesses, keeping track of evidence, stuff like that.

One of the things I remember hearing people say around the courthouse was this: In a criminal trial, the jury (for the most part) wants to see the defendant get on the stand and say he or she is not guilty. If the defendant does not do that, it generally is bad news for him/her.

              10) Chicago Cubs have used 33 pitchers this season, most in the majors; five of the 33 guys are position players.

              9) New Jersey’s three casinos and two racetracks took in $40.6M in sports bets in July, the first full month sports wagering was legal in the Garden State.

New York took in zero dollars, because their politicians have their heads up their butts.

              8) Mets got off to an 11-1 start this year, but are now 50-67; there’s a chance they could wind up with the worst record ever, for a team that started out 11-1.

Right now, the ’02 Indians hold that mark- they finished 74-88 after their 11-1 start.

              7) Modern baseball: Oakland A’s went from June 10-August 11 without any of their starting pitches getting an out after the 7th inning.

              The ’89 A’s threw 17 complete games; the ’74 A’s threw 49 complete games.

              6) One odd part of Hard Knocks so far was in the first episode, when Hue Jackson was telling his offensive coordinator Todd Haley that WR Josh Gordon would be out of camp for a while. Haley asked why he would be out, and Jackson wouldn’t tell him.

Now maybe/probably Jackson didn’t want the answer on camera/national TV and he told Haley when they were off camera. but maybe he didn’t, and that would be unusual.

              5) Ever hear of Gale Gilbert? He was a journeyman QB who started four NFL games (0-4) in an 11-year career that included stops in Seattle, Buffalo, San Diego.

The thing is this; Gilbert was the #3 QB in Buffalo during their 49-15 run from 1990-93, when they won the AFC title all four years, but lost all four Super Bowls. Then Gilbert moved on to San Diego in 1994; Chargers started that season 0-4, then won the AFC West and the AFC title before getting crushed in the Super Bowl.

Gilbert is the only player to go to the Super Bowl five years in a row; his son Garrett Gilbert is listed as the #2 QB on the Carolina Panthers’ depth chart this year.

              4) Furman QB Harris Roberts is enrolled in a cooperative educational partnership program between Furman and Clemson that has allowed him to continue playing for the Paladins while pursuing an engineering degree at Clemson. The schools are 30 miles apart.

Furman’s first football game this season is against……..Clemson, so the Tigers will be facing a QB who goes to their own engineering school.

              3) Last week, LSU had a 4-way QB competition; today, two of those four guys have transferred out of Baton Rouge, leaving sophomore Myles Brennan and Ohio State transfer Joe Burrow to battle it out for the starting job, with not a whole lot of depth behind them.

To twist around an old quote by Garry Templeton, the Padres’ shortstop a long time ago, “If I ain’t starting, then I’ll be departing.” Could be a similar situation at Alabama pretty soon.

              2) From ***********: the six best teams to bet on this season (thru Tuesday)

              1. Red Sox (86-35) +$3,384
              2. A’s (72-48) +$3,002

              1) Political/reality show trivia: Omarosa Manigault also worked in Vice President Al Gore’s office during the Clinton administration. Gore’s office administrator, Mary Margaret Overbey, said that Omarosa “was the worst hire we ever made”.

Finally, Democrats and Republicans agree on something.

              • LEADING OFF: Braves-Marlins melee, Cards soaring, Lester up
                August 16, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

                HOT TEMPERS

Suspensions could be on deck after Wednesday night's melee between the Braves and Marlins. Ronald Acuna's chance to extend his home run streak was put on hold when Miami pitcher Jose Urena hit the rookie slugger in the left elbow with his first pitch, a 97 mph fastball that left Acuna in obvious pain. The benches and bullpens for both teams emptied twice. Urena and Atlanta manager Brian Snitker were ejected, and Snitker had angry words for the pitcher. The 20-year-old Acuna exited in the second inning - the Braves said X-rays were negative and results of further tests would be announced Thursday. Atlanta won 5-2 to complete a four-game sweep.

                REDBIRDS SOARING

Marcell Ozuna and the Cardinals try to extend their season-best winning streak to nine games when they go for a four-game sweep of fading Washington. St. Louis, which is 18-9 since the All-Star break, hopes to have Matt Carpenter back in the lineup. On a major tear at the plate, Carpenter was removed from Wednesday night's game as a precaution after being hit on the hand by a pitch in the seventh inning. X-rays were negative, and Carpenter doesn't expect to miss any time. ''The pain and swelling started to go down a bit,'' he said. ''I definitely dodged a bullet there.'' Before leaving, Carpenter extended his on-base streak to 33 games. He has 17 homers and 30 RBIs during the run.

                TRYING TO FIND IT

Struggling lefty Jon Lester and the first-place Cubs visit Pittsburgh in the opener of a four-game series between NL Central rivals. Lester (12-5, 3.89 ERA) is 0-3 with a 10.32 ERA in five starts since the All-Star break. Ivan Nova (7-6, 4.42) gets the ball for the Pirates.

                LET'S PLAY FIVE

Philadelphia hosts the New York Mets in an odd five-game series that begins with a single-admission doubleheader and ends with a ''home'' game about 180 miles northeast of Citizens Bank Park. The doubleheader Thursday includes the makeup of a May 12 rainout. Aaron Nola (13-3, 2.28 ERA) starts the opener for the Phillies, who trail first-place Atlanta by two games in the NL East. Steven Matz is set to come off the disabled list for New York. Zach Eflin opposes Mets rookie Corey Oswalt in the nightcap. The teams then have a 6:05 p.m. start time Friday because of a postgame concert. They play a late-afternoon game Saturday before traveling to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, for Sunday's Little League Classic.

IF YOU CAN MAKE IT THERE ...

Tampa Bay has lost 12 consecutive series at Yankee Stadium dating to September 2014, but Blake Snell and the Rays can end that dubious streak in the finale of a three-game set. Snell (13-5, 2.18 ERA) makes his second start after a stint on the disabled list because of left shoulder fatigue. He faced Toronto in his previous outing and was perfect through five innings before being pulled. Masahiro Tanaka (9-3, 4.08) pitches for New York.

                        • Column: Suspend Urena for rest of season for plunking Acuna
                          August 16, 2018

ATLANTA (AP) Ronald Acuna Jr. is good for baseball.

Jose Urena and his defenders are not.

Jose, take the rest of the season off.

And while you're at it, take Keith Hernandez with you.

In a nod to the bad ol' days when it was apparently acceptable to plunk a guy who was playing too well, Urena unleashed a 97 mph fastball to Acuna's left forearm with his very first pitch of Wednesday night's game in Atlanta .

Fortunately, it appears Acuna escaped serious injury. The Braves said X-rays on his elbow were negative and results of further tests would be announced on Thursday.

Nevertheless, Major League Baseball should act swiftly to show that this sort of barbarism will not be tolerated in the national pastime.

Urena deserves to be suspended for the rest of the season.

                          Nothing less.

Urena apparently thought it was perfectly acceptable to assault - hey, let's call it what it was - one of the game's shining young stars, a 20-year-old who plays the game with pure joy and great skill for the first-place Braves.

                          Acuna's crime?

Going deep four times in the previous three games against the woeful Miami Marlins (and homering in five straight games overall), a remarkable run that included one of baseball's rarest feats - a pair of leadoff homers in Monday's doubleheader sweep by Atlanta.

Acuna started Tuesday's game with his third straight leadoff homer.

Urena made sure the streak didn't reach four before the Marlins left town.

''This young man is just playing the game, doing what he loves to do,'' said Brian Snitker, the Braves' manager. ''It's a damn shame.''

Urena was ejected. So was Snitker for leading his team onto the field to confront the Miami pitcher.

After the game, won by the Braves 5-2 to complete a four-game sweep, the manager was still fuming.

''It's beyond ... I don't know,'' Snitker said, struggling to find words in the non-profanity category. ''I've had three hours to calm down and all of a sudden I'm not real good right now.''

Snitker's counterpart, Miami manager Don Mattingly, hardly came to his pitcher's defense .

''This kid's swinging the bat good. We've got to figure out how to get him out,'' Mattingly said. ''That's what we said to Jose. I don't want to see this kid get hit. He's a great player. He's going to be great for a long time. He's beat us up. But this is not the way we want to handle that situation.''

He wasn't the least bit surprised that Snitker and his players came storming out of the dugout.

''I understand,'' Mattingly said. ''If we were on the other side and our guy was hitting homers all over the place and that happens, you're going to be fired up.''

Laughably, and with a completely straight face, Urena tried to make himself out as the real victim in all this .

''It seems like people get upset and things like that,'' he said. ''But I get upset, too. I've got to wait five days to just go out there, make one pitch and get kicked out of the game? That don't make sense.''

                          Actually, it makes perfect sense.

Now, baseball must take it to the next level.

Instead of a typical suspension that might cost Urena a start or two, the lords of discipline at MLB need to really bring the hammer down. Send a message, once and for all, that this sort of Neanderthal-like behavior will no longer be tolerated.

Even if the players' union appeals, even if it succeeds in overturning a rest-of-the-season ban, baseball would be sending a much-needed message and, hopefully, sparking a long-overdue dialogue to stamp out this sort of brutality.

                          It won't be easy.

Hernandez, a former All-Star first baseman and NL MVP who now works as a New York Mets broadcaster, quickly threw his support to Urena based on that ridiculous code of ethics passed down through the ages , the one that supposedly allows a pitcher to take the law into his own hands when a guy keeps hitting the ball into the seats.

''You've lost three games. He's hit three homers. You've got to hit him,'' Hernandez said during the Mets-Orioles game, sounding like someone who needs to be led gently into a pasture and left there. ''I'm sorry. People are not going to like that, but you've got to hit him. Knock him down (at least). I mean, seriously knock him down if you don't hit him.''

Then, stressing there's a proper way to carry out this painful but necessary justice, Hernandez offered a caveat.

''Never throw at anybody's head,'' he said, delivering a spot-on impression of that crazy uncle going on some nonsensical rant around the Thanksgiving table while everyone else stares at their food in uncomfortable silence. ''Never throw at anybody's head or neck. Hit him in the back. Hit him in the fanny.''

                          Here's the thing:

Maybe that's what Urena was trying to do - hit Acuna in the back or fanny, as was so eloquently stated in The World According To Keith. But sometimes, a guy throwing a baseball almost 100 mph doesn't put it exactly where he wants. Or maybe the batter reacts in a way that the pitcher wasn't expecting, ducking into a pitch instead of leaping away. All of which points to the ludicrousness of anyone, even someone such as Hernandez who spent 17 years in the big leagues, trying to brush this off as just part of the game.

Urena claimed he was merely trying to work inside against Acuna, apparently relying on the fact that he's hit 11 batters overall this season, tied for the most in the National League.

''I try to get something inside and move his feet,'' the right-hander insisted. ''Then we can go back outside, because he's been hot.''

Once MLB dismisses that ludicrous defense - Urena's defiant reaction on the mound hardly indicated that the pitch got away and he was really, really sorry about it - there's another issue to consider.

Baseball isn't exactly flourishing at the moment, especially with young people.

A thrilling player such as Acuna could help to reverse that trend, but not if he has to step to the plate after every homer wondering if he's going to get plunked again. Not if he's laid up with a broken arm. Not if he's driven from the game by a fractured skull.

Acuna is the future of baseball.

Urena and Hernandez are best left in the past.

                            • Rockies snap Acuna's HR streak, beat Braves 5-3
                              August 16, 2018

ATLANTA (AP) Colorado snapped Ronald Acuna Jr.'s home run streak and Atlanta's five-game winning streak, rallying for three unearned runs in the ninth inning to beat the Braves 5-3 on Thursday night.

David Dahl homered in the third and capped the winning rally with a two-out, two-run single off Brad Brach (1-3). The Rockies took advantage of an error by shortstop Danby Swanson leading off the ninth to win for the fifth time in six games.

One night after being plunked in the left arm by Miami's Jose Urena, Acuna was back in the lineup looking to extend his homer streak to six games. Wearing a red protective guard, the 20-year-old slugger received a standing ovation his first time up and lined the second pitch - one more than he saw the previous game - into center field for a single, extending his hitting streak to nine games.

That was the highlight of his night. Acuna finished 1 for 4, lining out to right in the eighth in his last chance to become the first player in Braves franchise history to homer in six straight games.

Seunghwan Oh (5-3) earned the win and Wade Davis worked a scoreless ninth for his 33rd save.

                              RANGERS 8, ANGELS 6

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Jurickson Profar started an especially rare triple play and homered to help Texas rally from an early five-run deficit for a victory over Los Angeles.

Rougned Odor singled home the go-ahead run in the eighth after an out call that would have ended the inning was reversed. Nomar Mazara went deep in his return from the disabled list, and Joey Gallo also homered for the Rangers.

Texas turned the sixth triple play in franchise history in the fourth. With the bases loaded, David Fletcher hit a low liner toward third base that Profar picked on a short hop. Playing near the bag, Profar stepped on third to force out Eric Young Jr. and then tagged Taylor Ward, who had stumbled off the base into foul territory. Profar then threw to Odor, and the second baseman tagged Kole Calhoun between first and second.

It was the majors' first triple play without retiring the batter since June 3, 1912, when the Brooklyn Dodgers turned the trick against the Cincinnati Reds.

                              NATIONALS 5, CARDINALS 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Bryce Harper had three hits and drove in three runs, and a beleaguered bullpen held on as Washington snapped a four-game losing streak.

The Nationals won for just the third time in their last 10 games and snapped the Cardinals' season-high, eight-game winning streak.

Tanner Roark (8-12) gave up four runs, three earned, in six innings.

A bullpen that had blown two leads to start the losing streak took care of the rest. Justin Miller pitched two scoreless innings and Koda Glover earned the save in the first opportunity since Ryan Madson was placed on the disabled list on Tuesday.

Just two of the four runs Luke Weaver (6-11) allowed in his 3 2/3 innings were earned. He gave up seven hits, including two to Roark, who scored both times.

                              METS 24, PHILLIES 4, 1ST GAME

                              PHILLIES 9, METS 6, 2ND GAME

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Rhys Hoskins hit a three-run homer, Scott Kingery had a solo shot and Philadelphia beat New York to split their doubleheader.

In the first game, Jose Bautista hit a grand slam and had a career-high seven RBIs as the Mets set a franchise record for runs, prompting the Phillies to use two position players to pitch the final three innings of a 24-4 rout.

The Mets kept on hitting in the nightcap with three straight doubles on Zach Eflin's first four pitches. Michael Conforto's two-run double made it 2-0.

But then Hoskins crushed one high off the foul pole to give the Phillies a 3-2 lead in the bottom half against Steven Matz (5-10), just activated from the disabled list. Hoskins, who went deep in both ends of the twinbill, has 11 of his 25 homers since the All-Star break - and three in the last four games.

In the opener, Corey Oswalt (2-2) allowed four solo homers in six innings, Amed Rosario hit a leadoff homer and had three RBIs and the Mets took advantage of four errors to score 11 unearned runs.

                              CUBS 1, PIRATES 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Jon Lester pitched six innings to win for the first time in just over a month and Ian Happ homered as Chicago beat Pittsburgh.

Lester (13-5) allowed five hits, struck out eight and had no walks while improving to 3-1 against the Pirates this season. His previous victory came July 15 at San Diego and he had gone 0-3 with a 10.32 ERA in five starts since the All-Star break.

Steve Cishek, Carl Edwards Jr. and Pedro Strop each pitched one inning to complete the six-hitter. Strop hit David Freese with a pitch with two outs in the ninth but converted his 10th save in 13 opportunities.

Happ connected with one out in the fourth inning off Ivan Nova (7-7) for his 13th home run, a drive deep into the right-center seats that was the game's only extra-base hit. There was a fair share of cheers while Happ rounded the bases as he is from suburban Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania.

                              RAYS 3, YANKEES 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Rookie left-hander Adam Kolarek pitched out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the ninth inning to lift Tampa Bay over New York to win its first series at Yankee Stadium since 2014.

Tampa Bay had lost 12 straight series in the Bronx, a record since the ballpark opened in 2009.

The Rays' bullpen mostly cruised following Blake Snell's five sharp innings until Sergio Romo allowed consecutive singles to Didi Gregorius and Gleyber Torres in the ninth - Torres' bloop ended his 0-for-17 skid. Romo walked Neil Walker on four pitches, then was replaced by Kolarek, a side-arming lefty who earned his first career save.

Tommy Pham helped the Rays jump on Masahiro Tanaka (9-3) with an RBI double during a two-run first inning, and Snell (14-5) and the bullpen took over from there.

                              TWINS 15, TIGERS 8

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Logan Forsythe had a career-high five hits and Jorge Polanco drove in four runs as Minnesota outslugged Detroit.

The teams combined for seven homers, with Polanco's three-run shot accounting for one of three by the Twins. Miguel Sano and Ehire Adrianza also went deep for Minnesota, which broke the game open with a seven-run sixth inning.

Forsythe raised his batting average to .449 (22 for 49) since joining the Twins in a trade that sent Brian Dozier to the Dodgers.

Minnesota chased Tigers lefty Francisco Liriano (3-8) in the second. A two-run, opposite-field homer by Sano ended Liriano's night after he allowed eight runs, four earned.
