    • Zimmerman powers Nationals past Lester, Cubs 9-4
      August 11, 2018

CHICAGO (AP) Ryan Zimmerman hit two home runs off a shaky Jon Lester and tied a career high with six RBIs, sending the Washington Nationals over the Chicago Cubs 9-4 on Saturday.

Zimmerman hit a two-run homer in the first inning and a sacrifice fly to the warning track in the third. He chased Lester with a three-run drive in the fourth that made it 9-1. He is batting .355 (16 for 45) with four homers and 16 RBIs in 14 games since returning from the disabled list last month.

Daniel Murphy also homered and had three hits, helping Tanner Roark (7-12) win his fourth straight start.

Lester (12-5) was tagged for eight earned runs and 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings. The left-hander is winless in his last five starts for the NL Central leaders, going 0-3 with a 10.32 ERA during that span.

Anthony Rizzo got his 1,000th career hit for the Cubs.

      MARINERS 3, ASTROS 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Ryon Healy had three hits and drove in the go-ahead run for Seattle, and Guillermo Heredia made a spectacular catch to preserve the lead in the eighth inning.

It was yet another win in a close game by the Mariners, who have taken three straight from their AL West rivals and improved to 44-17 this season in games decided by one or two runs.

With no outs and a runner at first in the eighth, Houston's Tony Kemp hit a ball to center field that looked sure to drop in. Heredia raced to track it down and grabbed it as he fell to the ground. He threw to first to complete the double play.

Wade LeBlanc (7-2) got the win, and Edwin Diaz earned his MLB-leading 45th save in 48 opportunities.

Charlie Morton (12-3) yielded three runs in six innings for his first loss since July 1.

      INDIANS 3, WHITE SOX 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Cleveland's Trevor Bauer pitched two-hit ball into the seventh inning before getting struck in the right leg by a line drive, and Michael Brantley and Jose Ramirez hit back-to-back home runs.

Bauer gave up one run and struck out eight before Jose Abreu's liner leading off the seventh struck him high in the back of his leg. The Indians brought in Brad Hand, ending another dominant start. Bauer is 5-0 with a 1.72 ERA in his past eight outings.

Cody Allen worked the ninth for his 22nd save in 25 chances.

White Sox right-hander James Shields (4-14) allowed two earned runs in seven innings. Yoan Moncada homered in the third, but the White Sox committed three errors.

      YANKEES 5, RANGERS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Rain pouring off his hat, Aroldis Chapman struck out Jurickson Profar with the bases loaded in a steady storm, preserving the Yankees' win.

Rookie Miguel Andujar hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the seventh inning, helping New York to its fifth victory in six games. Dellin Betances (3-3) got four outs for the win.

Chapman took over to begin the ninth and the Rangers tried to rally with a walk and a single. With home plate beginning to turn into a puddle, Chapman hit Adrian Beltre to load the bases with two outs.

Chapman fell behind Profar in the count 3-1, then came back to get him to swing through strike three for his 30th save.

Chris Martin (1-3) got the loss.

      RED SOX 5, ORIOLES 0, GAME 1

      RED SOX 6, ORIOLES 4, GAME 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - J.D. Martinez hit two home runs, including a tiebreaking two-run drive in the eighth inning, and the Red Sox finished off a doubleheader sweep.

In the opener, Boston's David Price (12-6) struck out 10 over six sparkling innings, and Jackie Bradley Jr. hit two solo homers.

The Red Sox have won nine of 10 to improve their big league-best record to 84-35.

Martinez hit his 37th homer in the eighth off Mike Wright (3-1). Martinez leads the majors in homers, RBIs (104) and hits (143).

Joe Kelly (4-0) pitched an inning for the win, and Craig Kimbrel worked the ninth for his 34th save.

Joey Rickard and Trey Mancini homered for the Orioles, who will try to avoid a four-game sweep on Sunday. Baltimore is 2-13 against the Red Sox this season.

Jimmy Yacabonis (0-1) got the loss in Game 1, yielding three runs over 4 2/3 innings.

      BREWERS 4, BRAVES 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Mike Moustakas hit a two-run double in the eighth inning for Milwaukee, and Josh Hader recorded a two-inning save.

The Brewers stopped a two-game slide and pulled within two games of the NL Central lead.

Milwaukee scored three times in the eighth for a 4-2 lead. Braves reliever Jesse Biddle (3-1) let Christian Yelich reach on an error when he dropped the ball at the bag after catching first baseman Freddie Freeman's underhand toss. Lorenzo Cain singled, and both runners scored on Moustakas' double.

Corbin Burnes (3-0) got the win, and Hader earned his ninth save in 12 chances.

      CARDINALS 8, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jack Flaherty struck out nine in seven innings, and St. Louis earned its fourth straight win.

Harrison Bader and Jose Martinez each hit a two-run homer, helping the Cardinals move seven games above .500 for the first time since June 12. They are 15-9 since Mike Shildt was named interim manager on July 15.

Flaherty (6-6) was charged with two runs and three hits. Jordan Hicks got four outs for his third save.

Alcides Escobar hit a two-run homer for Kansas City. Danny Duffy (7-11) allowed six runs in 5 1/3 innings.

      REDS 6, DIAMONDBACKS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Pinch-hitter Tucker Barnhart's two-run double highlighted Cincinnati's four-run rally in the eighth inning.

Archie Bradley (3-4) hit Eugenio Suarez leading off the inning and walked Curt Casali with two outs. Barnhart then lined a 3-2 pitch into the gap in left-center, and Billy Hamilton and Joey Votto followed with RBI singles off T.J. McFarland.

Arizona dropped back-to-back games for the first time in more than two weeks. The Diamondbacks also remained in a tie for the NL West lead with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who lost 3-2 at Colorado.

Amir Garrett (1-2) got the final out of the eighth for the win. Raisel Iglesias pitched the ninth for his 23rd save.

      MARLINS 4, METS 3, 11 INNINGS

MIAMI (AP) - Bryan Holaday delivered a pinch-hit RBI single with one out in the 11th inning, giving Miami the win.

Miguel Rojas led off the 11th with a single off Jacob Rhame (0-2) and moved to second on Magneuris Sierra's sacrifice. Holaday followed with a grounder past third baseman Todd Frazier that easily scored Rojas.

It was Holaday's second career game-ending hit, both this season, and the eighth walk-off victory for the Marlins. Holaday batted for Javy Guerra (1-0), who pitched the 11th.

      RAYS 3, BLUE JAYS 1

TORONTO (AP) - Willy Adames had two hits and drove in the decisive run, helping Tampa Bay to its seventh win in eight meetings with Toronto this season.

Diego Castillo (3-2) pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings for the win. Sergio Romo worked a perfect ninth for his 15th save in 22 opportunities.

Aledmys Diaz homered for the Blue Jays, who have lost five of six.

Toronto's Sam Gaviglio (2-5) allowed two runs, one earned, and six hits in 5 1/3 innings. Gaviglio is winless in 14 starts since a May 25 victory at Philadelphia.

      TWINS 4, TIGERS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Tyler Austin hit a two-run homer in his Minnesota debut, helping the Twins to the win.

Austin was acquired in the July 30 trade that sent Lance Lynn to the Yankees. He was recalled from Triple-A Rochester on Friday.

Kyle Gibson (6-9) pitched seven effective innings as Minnesota improved to 2-4 on its seven-game trip.

Detroit lost for the seventh time in eight games. Francisco Liriano (3-7) allowed three runs and six hits in five innings.

Trevor Hildenberger yielded a two-run homer to Niko Goodrum in the ninth before finishing for his first save of the season.

          — If you play fantasy football, buy the Warren Sharp football preview. Well worth it.

          — Announced crowd at Mets-Marlins game Friday in Miami: 6,996.

          — Kid named McKenzie on Denver had one of the best punt return TD’s I’ve ever seen last night; if he doesn’t make the Broncos, some other team will definitely sign him.

          — Maryland put football coach DJ Durkin on administrative leave.

          — Don Drysdale was the last Brooklyn Dodger who was active in the major leagues; he retired in 1969.

          — Indians OF Leonys Martin has an undisclosed illness and is on the DL. He is in a hospital getting treatment; we wish him well.

          Tweet of the Day
“They’ve got all these super nerds in the front office that know nothing about baseball but they like to project numbers and project players. … I think it’s killing the game. It’s to the point where just put computers out there. Just put laptops and what have you, just put them out there and let them play. We don’t even need to go out there anymore. It’s a joke.”
          Former major leaguer Jayson Werth

          ********************

Sunday’s Den: Notes, trends on AFC teams

Baltimore— Missed playoffs last three years, four of five years since Ray Lewis retired. Ravens are 6-2-1 vs spread on natural grass last two years. Since ’08, Ravens are 9-6-1 as road favorites in divisional games, 6-12 in non-divisional tilts.

Buffalo— Bills made playoffs LY for first time in 18 years, but now QB Tyrod Taylor plays for the Browns, and Buffalo’s three QB’s have a combined five NFL starts. When does rookie QB Josh Allen get the nod? Last three years, Bills are 6-2-1 as non-divisional home favorites.

Cincinnati— Marvin Lewis is 125-112-3 with Bengals, but 0-7 in playoff games. Over last decade, Bengals are 24-13-3 vs spread when playing an NFC opponent- surprisingly, they won seven of their last nine games with Baltimore. Under is 21-11 in their road games last four years.

For the record, Lewis may be 0-7 in playoff games, but the Bengals’ three head coaches before him were a combined 52-124 over 11 seasons.

Cleveland— Browns are 1-31 the last two years; since coming back to NFL in 1999, they’re 1-18 in season openers. Cleveland was a ridiculously-bad -28 in turnovers LY; having Taylor at QB will improve that a great deal. Last eight years, Browns are 21-39-3 vs spread at home.

Denver— Keenum will be Broncos’ 7th different #1 QB the last 12 years; they’re 5-2 as home underdogs last three years, vs 5-11 vs spread on the road. Denver was 1-7 on road LY, with only win at Indianapolis in December; previous six years, they were 31-17 on foreign soil

Houston— Texans scored 34-33-38 points in last three games rookie QB Watson played, but after his injury, Houston scored 16 or fewer points in 8 of their last 9 games. Last nine years, Texans are 6-11 as home underdogs; under O’Brien, they’re 9-3-1 when favored by 3 or fewer points.

Indianapolis— Andrew Luck returns at QB after missing LY; they change coaches after missing playoffs last 3 years (8-8/8-8/4-12). Last two years, Colts are 2-7-1 vs spread in games coming off a win, 13-8 in games coming off a loss. Frank Reich has never been a head coach before; he was the Eagles’ OC the last two years.

Jacksonville— Jaguars were +10 in turnovers LY as they made playoffs for first time in 10 years; can they force 33 takeaways again? Over is 15-8 in Jaguar home games the last three years. Last five years, Jax is 3-17 vs spread when playing an NFC team; they open with Giants this year.

Kansas City— Last three years, Chiefs were +14/+16/+15 in turnovers, but Alex Smith is gone, Patrick Mahomes (1 career start) is the starter now and KC’s turnover ratio figures to regress some this year. Chiefs were -3 in turnovers in 2014, the only time in Andy Reid’s five years in KC the Chiefs failed to make the playoffs.

LA Chargers— Bolts started out 0-4 LY, with three losses by 2 or 3 points; their kickers were terrible in September, and it cost them a playoff spot. Chargers made playoffs once in last eight years; they’re 9-13 as home favorites the last four years.

Chargers play in Cleveland in Week 6, then play in London against the Titans in Week 7, before their bye week. In Week 9, they play in Seattle and the next week they visit Oakland- tough five-week stretch.

Miami— Dolphins haven’t been in playoffs since 2008; their last playoff win was in 2000. Jay Cutler was Miami’s QB LY; now he’s on a reality show with his actress wife and Ryan Tannehill is back at QB. Miami is 5-2-1 as home dogs under coach Gase; they’re 5-15 vs spread in their last 20 games on artificial turf.

New England— Last time Patriots went out in their first playoff game was 2010; they’re 14-6-3 as home favorites the last three years, but NE is replacing DC Matt Patricia this year- he is the Lions’ new coach. Over last decade, Patriots are 24-10 vs spread when they’re coming off a loss. Last five years, NE is 3-9 vs spread as a road favorite in divisional games.

NJ Jets— Jets haven’t made playoffs since 2010; they were outscored 94-32 in losing their last four games LY. Will Sam Darnold start? Will they keep three QB’s? Two of their first three games this year are in primetime. Last four years, Jets are -29 in turnovers; they’re 15-8-1 vs spread at home the last three years.

Oakland— Jon Gruden already got rid of his punter and his kicker; special teams coach Bisaccia will have his hands full. Oakland hasn’t won a playoff game (0-1) since Gruden beat them in Super Bowl with Bucs 16 years ago. Last five years, Raiders are 13-6-1 vs spread as a non-divisional road underdog.

Pittsburgh— Steelers have had only three head coaches since 1969; they made playoffs last four years, but haven’t won Super Bowl since 2008. Last three years, under is 18-4-1 in Pitt’s away games. Since 2010, Steelers are 27-15-1 vs spread when coming off a loss.

Tennessee— Titans made playoffs for first time in nine years, then fired the coach; they’re 7-3-2 vs spread as home favorites the last two years, but 5-10-1 vs spread on road. Over last decade, Tennessee is 8-21-1 vs spread in AFC South road games.

Developing young QB Marcus Mariota will be QB coach Pat O’Hara, whose resume is fascinating— he played at USC, played and coached in the Arena League, was the #3 QB for the Miami Sharks in the movie Any Given Sunday, backing up Dennis Quaid and Jamie Foxx.

          • LEADING OFF: Scherzer vs Hamels, Wright returns, Arenado out
            August 11, 2018

A look at what's happening around baseball Sunday:

            MAX MATCHUP

Nationals ace Max Scherzer (15-5, 2.28 ERA) will try to become the first 16-game winner in the majors when he starts the Sunday night game at Wrigley Field. Owner of three Cy Young Awards, he also leads the majors in strikeouts this year with 216 in 161 2/3 innings. Cole Hamels starts for the Cubs - he's allowed just one earned run in 11 innings during the first two starts since being acquired from Texas.

            SALE SET

Red Sox ace Chris Sale returns from a two-week stint on the disabled list because of shoulder inflammation. Manager Alex Cora said the lefty could throw 100 pitches if he's not too rusty. Sale (11-4) leads the AL with a 2.04 ERA and will try to pitch Boston to a four-game sweep of the Orioles at Camden Yards.

            WELCOME BACK

Mets third baseman David Wright is set to play in a minor league game, more than two years since the oft-injured team captain last appeared in the majors. The 35-year-old Wright has been beset by back, neck and shoulder trouble. He's scheduled to start a rehab assignment by playing five innings in the field for Class A St. Lucie. His last game in the bigs was May 27, 2016 - he had brief stint in the minors last August before being shut down.

            WAITING

The Rockies will see how third baseman Nolan Arenado is feeling, a day after he was out of the starting lineup at Coors Field against the Dodgers. The All-Star third baseman left Friday night's game with a strained right shoulder. Arenado is hitting .307 with 29 home runs and 82 RBIs, and Colorado is hoping he can avoid a trip to the disabled list.

            MISS HIM

The AL Central-leading Indians have put slugger Edwin Encarnacion on the disabled list because of swelling in his left biceps. The cleanup man has struggled since being hit on the right hand by Yankees reliever Chad Green before the All-Star break.

            SWEET SWING

Blue Jays prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has hit four home runs in the last four games for Triple-A Buffalo. The 19-year-old son of a Hall of Famer is batting a combined .406 with 18 home runs at four levels of the minor leagues. The Bisons host the Toledo Mud Hens to wrap up the weekend.

CHICAGO (AP) Pinch-hitter David Bote smashed a grand slam against Ryan Madson with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Chicago Cubs to a 4-3 victory over the Washington Nationals on Sunday night.

Bote's long drive to center field came after Washington's Max Scherzer and Chicago's Cole Hamels delivered simply dominant starts.

Madson (2-5) came in with a 3-0 lead to start the ninth and quickly ran into trouble. He gave up an infield single to Jason Heyward with one out and hit Albert Almora with a pitch. Madson then retired Kyle Schwarber on a foul pop before hitting Contreras to load the bases, but Bote drove a 2-2 pitch well beyond the center-field wall.

Bote's drive made a winner of Justin Wilson (4-3), who got the final two outs in the ninth.

                        RED SOX 4, ORIOLES 1

BALTIMORE (AP) - Chris Sale celebrated his return from the disabled list by striking out 12 over five dominant innings, and the Boston Red Sox moved 50 games over .500 by completing a sweep of the lowly Orioles.

Sale (12-4) was placed on the DL on July 28 with left shoulder inflammation. Judging by his performance, the injury is no longer an issue.

The left-hander allowed just one hit, a clean third-inning single to left field by Renato Nunez, and walked none. Craig Kimbrel, the last of five Boston relievers, worked the ninth for his 35th save.

Steve Pearce homered for the Red Sox, who have won 10 of 11 to improve to 85-35.

Alex Cobb (3-15) took the loss despite allowing only two runs, one earned, over seven innings.

                        MARINERS 4, ASTROS 3, 10 INNINGS

HOUSTON (AP) - Ryon Healy hit a tying homer with two out in the ninth inning, Mitch Haniger delivered an RBI double in the 10th and the Mariners swept a four-game series from the AL West-leading Astros.

It's the first time in franchise history that Seattle swept a four-game series from Houston. The third-place Mariners pulled within four games of the Astros.

Healy's solo drive off Hector Rondon made it 3-all. Pinch-hitter Dee Gordon singled against Roberto Osuna (1-1) with one out in the 10th, and the speedster easily scored on Haniger's double that skipped down the left field line.

Zach Duke (5-4) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the win. Edwin Diaz got three outs for his 46th save.

                        ROCKIES 4, DODGERS 3

DENVER (AP) - Chris Iannetta drew a bases-loaded walk with two out in the ninth inning, and the Rockies beat the Dodgers after squandering a late lead.

It was the second walk-off win in as many days for Colorado. Ryan McMahon lined a three-run homer in the ninth on Saturday.

McMahon was walked intentionally to load the bases for Iannetta, who drew a five-pitch walk off Dylan Floro (4-3).

The loss dropped the Dodgers out of a first-place tie with Arizona in the NL West.

Wade Davis (2-6) pitched a shaky ninth for the win after Colorado failed to protect a 3-0 lead.

                        YANKEES 7, RANGERS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - CC Sabathia threw six shutout innings, Giancarlo Stanton homered again and the Yankees won for the sixth time in seven games.

Didi Gregorius also homered and turned in a nifty defensive play for New York. Sabathia (7-4) allowed one hit in his first win since July 4.

Joey Gallo had two hits for Texas, which dropped three of four in the series. He also reached over the left-field wall to take a home run away from Austin Romine in the eighth.

Stanton hit his 30th homer, giving New York a first-inning lead for the second straight day by connecting off Martin Perez (2-5). The slugger has five homers in his last six games.

                        CARDINALS 8, ROYALS 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Yadier Molina hit a tiebreaking two-run single in the seventh inning, and St. Louis matched a season high with its fifth consecutive win.

The Cardinals moved eight games above .500, equaling their season high set on June 11, and improved to a National League-best 12-4 since July 27.

Molina's bases-loaded single scored Harrison Bader and Patrick Wisdom, who had two hits, drove in a run and scored twice in his major league debut.

Tyson Ross (7-9) pitched six solid innings in his St. Louis debut after he was claimed him on waivers last week from San Diego. Ross stepped in for Luke Weaver, who was scratched after cutting his right index finger on the aluminum foil cover of his clubhouse meal on Saturday night.

The lowly Royals have dropped nine of 10. Jason Hammel (2-12) got the loss.

                        BRAVES 8, BREWERS 7

ATLANTA (AP) - Ozzie Albies led off the seventh inning with a tiebreaking homer, one of three for Atlanta, and the Braves overcame 19 hits by Milwaukee.

Ronald Acuna Jr. and Dansby Swanson each hit a two-run homer for Atlanta, which took two of three in a matchup of playoff contenders. Jonny Venters (2-1) pitched a scoreless inning for the win, and A.J. Minter worked the ninth for his 10th save.

Jesus Aguilar hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs for Milwaukee. The Brewers left 13 runners on base.

Albies gave Atlanta the lead by lining his 21st homer over the left-field wall on a slider from Dan Jennings (4-4).

                        ATHLETICS 8, ANGELS 7

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jed Lowrie homered and moved over 1,000 hits for his career, and Oakland held on for its ninth win in 11 games.

The A's, who currently occupy the second AL wild-card spot, moved within 2 1/2 games of first-place Houston in the AL West.

Fernando Rodney (4-2) pitched a scoreless inning for his first victory with Oakland. Blake Treinen struck out the side in the ninth for his 30th save.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia went with a bullpen day. Taylor Cole (0-3), making his first career start, allowed three runs in 1 1/3 innings.

                        DIAMONDBACKS 9, REDS 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Paul Goldschmidt hit two of Arizona's five homers, and the Diamondbacks avoided a sweep.

Daniel Descalso, Eduardo Escobar and David Peralta also connected for Arizona, and Zack Godley (13-6) pitched 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball. Goldschmidt finished with three hits and three RBIs.

Last-place Cincinnati had won three of four, including the first two games of the weekend series. Jose Peraza and Eugenio Suarez each had two hits, but Luis Castillo (6-10) was tagged for five runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings.

                        PADRES 9, PHILLIES 3

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Freddy Galvis hit a grand slam for San Diego, and Travis Jankowski stole four bases and scored three times.

Galvis connected against Jake Arrieta (9-7) in the third inning, hitting a two-out drive to center for his first career slam. It was his third homer in his last seven games and No. 8 on the season.

Last-place San Diego won for the fifth time in seven games, including two of three against NL East-leading Philadelphia. Joey Lucchesi (6-6) struck out six in six scoreless innings.

                        INDIANS 9, WHITE SOX 7

Carlos Carrasco struck out nine in seven innings, and the Indians held on for the win.

AL Central-leading Cleveland had a 9-1 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth, and almost blew it. Run-scoring singles by Tim Anderson and Kevan Smith trimmed the Indians' lead to 9-5 in the ninth before manager Terry Francona replaced Dan Otero with Cody Allen.

Adam Engel greeted the closer with a two-run triple before Allen struck out Nicky Delmonico and Yolmer Sanchez for his 23rd save in 26 chances.

Carrasco (14-6) allowed three hits. Melky Cabrera hit a three-run homer against one of his former teams, helping the Indians take two of three in the series.

DETROIT (AP) - Matthew Boyd pitched six strong innings and the Tigers beat the Twins on Jack Morris Day at Comerica Park.

The game started 20 minutes late because of the ceremony to retire Morris' No. 47 jersey. Morris and longtime teammate Alan Trammell were inducted into the Hall of Fame earlier this month.

Boyd (7-10) won for the third time in four starts, giving up one run and two hits. Shane Greene pitched the ninth for his 25th save.

Syndergaard (8-2) allowed three runs and seven hits. He improved to 4-1 in his last five starts.

Bote's grand slam in 9th lifts Cubs over Nationals 4-3
                        August 12, 2018

Teammates mobbed him as he crossed the plate and fans chanted ''Bote! Bote!'' It was quite a turn after the Cubs got shut down for most of the night. But they managed to take two of three in the first meeting between these teams since Chicago won the NL Division Series last year.

Bote's drive made a winner of Justin Wilson (4-3), who got the final two outs in the ninth.

The Nationals managed just three hits, but looked as though they were on their way with Scherzer tossing three-hit ball over seven scoreless innings. The three-time Cy Young Award winner struck out 11 and walked one.

Hamels was about as good, giving up just one run and one hit in seven innings. He struck out nine and walked one in his third start since Chicago acquired him from Texas.

The only hit he allowed was Daniel Murphy's single in the second to put runners on first and third. Mark Reynolds then drove in Ryan Zimmerman with a sacrifice fly.

The Nationals did not get another hit until Trea Turner tripled against Brandon Kintzler in the ninth. Back-to-back walks to Juan Soto and Bryce Harper - the second being intentional - loaded the bases for Zimmerman, who then chased Kintzler with an RBI single.

Wilson then retired Murphy on fly to left before Reynolds struck out looking.

                        TRAINER'S ROOM

Nationals: The Nationals held 3B Anthony Rendon out of the lineup for the second straight game because of a sore left wrist. ... Closer Sean Doolittle (left toe inflammation) hopes to start throwing off the mound in the next day or two. He has not pitched since July 6.

Cubs: The Cubs activated RHP Anthony Bass (right mid-thoracic strain) and assigned him to Triple-A Iowa after he cleared waivers.

                        UP NEXT

Nationals: Washington opens a four-game series at surging St. Louis, with LHP Tommy Milone (1-1, 5.50 ERA) starting for the Nationals and RHP Miles Mikolas (12-3, 2.74) pitching for the Cardinals.

Cubs: Send LHP Jose Quintana (10-8, 4.28) to the mound when they open a two-game series against Milwaukee on Tuesday. Quintana is 3-0 in his past four starts at Wrigley Field. RHP Jhoulys Chacin (11-4, 3.91) pitches for the Brewers.

                          • Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

                            — Eduardo Paredes has been recalled by the Angels 10 times this season, including Sunday; he must have some serious frequent flier miles.

                            — Cubs 4, Nationals 3— David Bote hits a walk-off grand slam for the Cubs.

                            — Dodger closer Kenley Jansen is out for a month with an irregular heartbeat.
Here are some incentives that Kenta Maeda is likely to miss by going to the bullpen:

                            — $1M each for his 25th, 30th, and 32nd start.

                            — $250,000 each for his 110th, 120th, 130th, 140th, 150th, 160th, 170th, 180th, and 190th inning pitched. (He is at 109 IP now, so he’ll hit some of these).

                            — $750,000 for his 200th inning.

                            **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

                            13) All NFL teams should carry three QB’s; the #3 QB should be a 48th roster spot that is mandated to protect the quality of games, should a starter get hurt early in the game.

Couple years ago in Houston, the Texans’ QB got hurt very early; they didn’t have a #3 QB active, so they had to play a very conservative game, so the backup didn’t get hurt. It ruined the game, just made it an awful football game to watch.

NFL teams are all rich as hell; spend a few bucks and activate three QB’s every week.

                            12) Josh McCown is the veteran QB the Jets hope will mentor rookie Sam Darnold; McCown’s daughter is six months younger than Darnold.

                            11) There are only five players who have hit 100+ homers for three different teams: Reggie Jackson, Alex Rodriguez, Jim Thome, Darrell Evans and Adrian Beltre.

Fred McGriff hit 100+ homers for Atlanta and Toronto, “only” 99 for Tampa Bay.

                            10) When Kenta Maeda made his 20th start of the season for the Dodgers Friday night, it earned him a $1M bonus. He earns another $1.5M if/when he gets to 25 starts, but even though the Dodgers are in a tight pennant race, he’s going to the bullpen after his recent struggles.

Hyun-jin Ryu will take Maeda’s turn in the rotation Wednesday.

                            9) David Wright played in a minor league rehab game Sunday; the 35-year old Wright hasn’t played in major league game since May 27, 2016. He went 0-3.

                            8) Former major league pitcher Esteban Loaiza pled guilty Friday to possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. Authorities found about 20 kilograms of cocaine in a house he was renting. Loaiza is facing a minimum of 10 years in prison with a maximum of life. He’ll be sentenced on November 2.

46-year old Loaiza pitched in the majors for 14 years, went 126-114; he earned a total of $43,734,000 as a major league player. Now he is looking at a minimum of 10 years in jail.

                            7) Makes me laugh when you see ballplayers wearing their sunglasses on their hats on a sunny day. Not going to help you much there, buddy.

                            6) Sounds like Chad Kelly has moved ahead of Paxton Lynch on the Broncos’ depth chart at QB. Kelly is an Ole Miss alum who is also Jim Kelly’s nephew- he is Case Keenum’s backup, for now.

                            5) Saw something Friday I haven’t seen much; Nationals’ OF Juan Soto got picked off first twice in the same game, once by the pitcher, once by the catcher. When you lose 3-2, getting picked off twice isn’t ideal.

                            4) I’m guessing there are more kick returns in NFL exhibition games than in regular season games; say you’re a guy trying to make the roster as a special teamer. Taking a knee in the end zone ain’t getting you on a roster, so you run the ball out of the end zone and try to make a big play so you get noticed.

In the regular season, a returner takes the ball out of the end zone and screws up his team’s field position, you’re going to get cut. You take a knee, your club gets the ball on the 25 and you keep your job. Once you have a job, you become conservative to keep it.

                            3) San Francisco Giants retired Barry Bonds’ #25 Saturday night; I’m neutral on Bonds, but any event with Willie Mays and Willie McCovey present is automatically a cool event.

                            2) Is the PGA Tour in trouble? Every week, no matter what happens, we get “Tiger Woods shot a 73, finished at 4-under par. Oh by the way, Player X shot 62 on Sunday and won by six strokes”, as if every other golfer is an afterthought.

If Eldrick Woods never wins another golf tournament, what happens to the PGA Tour? The guy will be 43 in December; he is on the downside of his career, no matter what. Golf had its heyday when Woods was unstoppable, but that was a long time ago.

Maybe all the writers covering golf are fearful their gravy train could be de-railed when Woods is finished playing, so they’re hoping like hell he can regain his winning touch.

                            1) Maryland put its head coach, two athletic trainers and a strength coach on administrative leave as the school reviews circumstances surrounding the death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair June 13.

It isn’t the most important thing, but hard to believe the coach is going to keep his job after this debacle. Not sure why stuff like this still happens, but it does.
