    Thursday MLB Best Bet
    Baltimore Orioles vs. Texas Rangers

Thursdays are known as travel days in MLB, but for some they can be the beginning of a four-game weekend set in a given city. That's the case for all but one of the MLB games on Thursday night as only the Brewers and Dodgers are using today to wrap up a series between them.

The rest are all new matchups, and while one of them is going to receive all the attention and hype (Red Sox/Yankees), it's another AL series between two teams that have long been playing out the stretch that caught my attention.

Odds: Baltimore (+128) vs Texas (-139); Total set at 10.5

The Orioles have long been out of any sort of contention this year and completed a mass exodus this week when they traded numerous guys around the league after Manny Machado was the first two go after the All-Star break. However, as many teams tend to do when an uncertain cloud that hangs over a locker room for months finally leaves (Machado finally getting traded), the team becomes a lot more relaxed and often play much better.

The Orioles are no exception to that case at least lately, as they start this series with the Rangers having won four of their last five and five of their last seven overall. Young guys are getting more opportunities now and seem to be making the most of it.

Texas just sent off Cole Hamels earlier this week, but have been on a nice little run themselves. The Rangers swept Houston IN Houston last weekend (when the Rangers were +180 underdogs or greater in every game), and then followed that up with a series split in a brief two-game set with Arizona.

The Rangers now return home to face another franchise they know is in the same situation as themselves, and when that's the case, motivation on both sides can be difficult to assume/expect. It's what tends to keep me off ML plays in these MLB matchups the rest of the way and this game is no exception. The total however is a different story, as it appears odds makers suspect that motivation, at least from an offensive standpoint won't be a problem for either side with a 10.5 number.

Texas totals can often be a shade inflated because of the potential for winds to kick up there and make games easily go one way or the other, but I'm not sure the number is quite high enough for this game. VegasInsider.com is already showing that it's about a 60/40 split in favor of the 'under', but I'm actually looking the other way here.

To start, both of tonight's starters have been great 'over' bets lately with Baltimore's Andrew Cashner 3-0 O/U in his last three starts, and the Rangers' Yovani Gallardo is 6-1 O/U on the year. Both guys have ERA's above the 4.30 mark and Cashner's 121 hits allowed in 112.1 IP shows that he's fairly consistent about being hit hard too.

Cashner is no stranger to this mound either having pitched for Texas a season ago. That may help with understanding potential winds out there, but this is still a guy that's had his opponents score at least five runs on the Orioles in six straight starts and seven of his last eight. Knowing what a light wind in (projected 7 mph in from left-center) is going to do isn't going to help Cashner and the Orioles much at all if he's still serving meatballs across the heart of the plate, and until I see otherwise, 'over's' will always be on my radar in Cashner starts the rest of the way – his 6-14 O/U record is bound to regress to the mean if his pitching continues as is.

But it takes two to tango and for a total of 10.5 to get surpassed, we are going to need some help from Yovani Gallardo in that area as well.

Baltimore playing well in winning four of their last five is a good sign, but what is more helpful to the 'over' cause here is the fact that the O's put up at least 7 runs in all of those four wins. In fact, in Baltimore's last six wins they've scored 6 or more runs, and considering Gallardo has allowed an average of 5.1/game in his seven starts this year, chances are we see Baltimore threaten that 6+ run total tonight.

Finally, with Texas giving Gallardo 8.6 runs/game in support in those seven starts, don't think that if Baltimore does end up with 6+ tonight it will equate to a win for them. Texas is 3-0-2 O/U the last five times Gallardo has opened up a series, and after scoring two runs or less like they did in Arizona last time out, the Rangers are on a 11-5-1 O/U run. More specifically, after getting shutout like they did in that game with Arizona, Texas is 4-1 O/U this year, with the fewest total runs scored in any of those 'overs' being 11. More than enough for tonight.

So with Baltimore on a 6-1 O/U run on the road, including 4-1 O/U when they are facing a losing team, I'm expecting the scoreboard operator to be plenty busy in Texas tonight as the crooked numbers come in bunches here.

    Best Bet: Over 10.5 runs

      • Pearce hits 3 homers, Red Sox boost AL East lead over Yanks
        August 3, 2018

BOSTON (AP) Steve Pearce homered three times, the second a three-run drive in an eight-run fourth inning as the Boston Red Sox rallied from an early deficit to beat the New York Yankees 15-7 on Thursday night and take a season-high 6+-game lead in the AL East.

In the opener of a four-game series that gave New York the potential to erase most of its division deficit, the Red Sox instead opened a bigger gap, taking advantage of manager Aaron Boone's decision to pull starter CC Sabathia after three innings with a 4-2 lead. Jonathan Holder (1-2) faced seven batters and did not record an out.

Mookie Betts had four hits and two walks, reaching safely all six times he came to the plate. Pearce, J.D. Martinez, Ian Kinsler and Andrew Benintendi had three hits apiece for Boston.

Didi Grigorius homered twice, Aaron Hicks hit one and Giancarlo Stanton got his 25th of the season for the Yankees, who have lost just twice in the past week but dropped two games in the division.

Brian Johnson (2-3), making a spot start because AL ERA and strikeout leader Chris Sale went on the disabled list, fanned a career-high 11 for his first victory since April 2.

        CARDINALS 3, ROCKIES 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Pinch-hitter Jose Martinez sliced an opposite-field single to the right-center field gap off Wade Davis with one out in the ninth inning, driving in the tying and go-ahead runs and lifting St. Louis over Colorado.

Greg Garcia singled with one out against Davis (2-4) and took third on a single by rookie Harrison Bader.

Bader stole second, and Martinez singled on a high fastball, giving the Cardinals their ninth walk-off win this season.

Davis has a career-high five blown saves in 36 chances.

Chasen Shreve (3-2), acquired from the New York Yankees on Saturday, pitched a perfect ninth in his second appearance for the Cardinals.

        DODGERS 21, BREWERS 5

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Cody Bellinger hit a grand slam, Joc Pederson and Yasiel Puig hit two homers each, and the Dodgers cruised past Milwaukee.

Brian Dozier and Justin Turner also went deep as the Dodgers finished with their highest scoring total at Dodger Stadium. Los Angeles hit a season high-tying seven homers, and also set season highs for runs in a game, and in an inning when they had nine in the seventh.

Clayton Kershaw (5-5) gave up two runs and five hits over six innings, winning his second consecutive start.

Christian Yelich and Jesus Augilar each hit home runs for the Brewers, who lost for just the fifth time in 13 games.

Bellinger snapped an 0-for-13 slide when he lifted a 0-1 pitch from Brewers starter Jhoulys Chacin (10-4) off the right-field foul pole for his 18th of the season. It was his second grand slam this season and third of his two-year career.

Chacin (10-4) gave up nine runs and five hits with four walks over 4 1/3 innings.

        RANGERS 17, ORIOLES 8

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Jurickson Profar hit a three-run home run and a run-scoring single as Texas scored 10 runs during the first two innings, Rougned Odor homered and walked a career-high five times, and the Rangers routed Baltimore.

Yovani Gallardo (6-1) won his third straight start but lasted only 5 1/3 innings despite having a 13-1 lead through four. Gallardo, a former Oriole, allowed five runs on nine hits, including home runs by Mark Trumbo and Caleb Joseph, plus two walks on a season-high 104 pitches.

The Rangers have won five of their last six games for their best stretch since winning seven straight from June 16-23.

The 17 runs and 18 hits were season highs for Texas, while the Orioles allowed their most runs this year.

Andrew Cashner (3-10) retired only five batters, allowing eight runs on seven hits. He struck out one, walked one and had a wild pitch.

        PADRES 6, CUBS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Austin Hedges hit a go-ahead, three-run homer, Robbie Erlin pitched two-hit ball over five innings in a spot start, and San Diego beat Chicago.

The Padres ended a season-high, seven-game losing streak.

Hedges homered off Jesse Chavez (3-2) in the sixth inning for a 3-1 lead, his third homer in six games and seventh overall. Hedges and Manuel Margot each had three of the Padres' 15 hits, and Margot, Eric Hosmer and A.J. Ellis drove in runs.

Erlin (2-3) allowed one run, struck out four and walked one in his third start this season and first since May 21. Four relievers followed in a three-hitter for the Padres.

        NATIONALS 10, REDS 4

WASHINGTON (AP) - Max Scherzer struck out 10 in six innings for his fifth win in as many starts, helping the Washington beat Cincinnati..

Scherzer (15-5) also singled in a run off Tyler Mahle (7-9) during a six-run second inning as the Nationals won their third straight and moved two games above .500 for the first time since July 7.

Washington slugger Bryce Harper hit his 26th homer of the season, a blast into the second deck in right-center in the eighth.

Trea Turner connected for his 14th homer in the same inning and finished with four RBIs for the third-place Nationals, who remained five games back of Philadelphia and 4+ behind Atlanta in the NL East.

Mahle failed to make it through the second inning for a second consecutive start.

        PHILLIES 5, MARLINS 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Maikel Franco hit a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to lift Philadelphia past Miami.

Nick Williams drove in the tying run with a bases-loaded groundout off Kyle Barraclough (0-5) in the ninth.

Franco followed with a high drive on a 2-0 pitch into the seats in left. He flipped his bat backward between home plate and first base, jogged without a helmet and was swarmed by teammates after he circled the bases.

The Phillies remained a half-game in front of Atlanta in the NL East. The Braves beat the Mets 4-2.

Tommy Hunter (3-1) earned the win with a scoreless inning in relief. Philadelphia's Nick Pivetta gave up two runs and four hits, striking out seven in six innings.

        GIANTS 8, DIAMONDBACKS 1

PHOENIX (AP) - Madison Bumgarner worked through traffic in five innings to out-pitch Zack Greinke in a duel of aces, lifting San Francisco past Arizona.

Bumgarner (4-4) pitched with runners on in every inning, yet limited the Diamondbacks to a run on seven hits. He stranded nine runners and struck out five.

Evan Longoria hit a solo homer off Greinke (12-6) and San Francisco broke open a close games five runs in the eighth inning. Austin Slater had two RBIs and scored three times for the Giants, who have won four straight.

Greinke gave up two runs on four hits and struck five in six innings to lose for the first time in nine starts.

Arizona's David Peralta had four hits after missing the previous two games with right shoulder tightness.

        BRAVES 4, METS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Ronald Acuna Jr. led off with his first big league triple and reached three times, Johan Camargo hit a two-run double in a three-run third inning, and Atlanta extended its winning streak to four by beating New York.

Mike Foltynewicz (8-7) won for the first time since July 11, allowing two runs and five hits in six innings. Three pitchers followed with one-hit relief as the Braves improved to 10-3 against the Mets this year.

New York dropped a season-low 18 games under .500 at 44-62. The Mets have lost 41 of their last 60 games overall and 23 of their last 32 home games.

Jason Vargas (2-7) allowed four runs and six hits in five innings. He has not pitched past the fifth in any of his 11 starts.

        WHITE SOX 6, ROYALS 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Jose Abreu hit a tying home run off Jason Adam in the eighth and pinch-hitter Daniel Palka had a three-run homer off Jason Hammel later in the inning, giving Chicago the win over Kansas City.

In a matchup of teams on track to both lose 100 or more games, the White Sox avoided getting swept in the three-game series.

Kansas City overcame a 2-0 deficit when pinch-hitter Whit Merrifield hit a three-run homer in the eighth off Xavier Cedeno (1-0), but Abreu homered with one out in the bottom half against Adam (0-3). Abreu's 141st big league homer moved him ahead of Ron Kittle into sole possession of 10th on the White Sox career list.

Avisail Garcia doubled, Omar Narvaez was intentionally walked and Hammel relieved. Palka drove a hanging slider a half-dozen rows in the right-center field bleachers.

        BLUE JAYS 7, MARINERS 3

SEATTLE (AP) - Kendrys Morales homered in the seventh inning to back Mike Hauschild's impressive Blue Jays debut as Toronto beat Seattle.

With two outs in the seventh, a runner on first base and the score tied 2-2, Morales hit a fastball from Juan Nicasio (1-6) over the wall in right-center field. It was Morales' 13th home run of the season.

Hauschild (1-0), signed by Toronto after being released by Houston, was pitching in his first game in the majors since April 19, 2017. He entered the game in the second inning after Nelson Cruz's two-run homer off reliever-turned-spot-starter Tyler Clippard gave the Mariners a quick 2-0 lead in the first. Hauschild pitched six scoreless innings, limiting the Mariners to four singles and one walk while striking out five.

The Blue Jays tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the second against Mariners starter Felix Hernandez. Yangervis Solarte led off with a single and Teoscar Hernandez doubled him to third. With one out, Luke Maile walked to load the bases, and Devon Travis had a two-run single.

        RAYS 4, ANGELS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Jalen Beeks got his first major league win, C.J. Cron had a two-run single and Tampa Bay completed a three-game sweep of Los Angeles.

Beeks (1-1), the second pitcher on a bullpen day, allowed two runs and two hits in five innings.

Tampa Bay's Hunter Wood struck out five and allowed one hit over the first two innings. Diego Castillo and Sergio Romo, who worked the ninth for his 13th save, completed a three-hitter.

Angels star Mike Trout didn't play because of a sore right wrist.

Cron drove in two with a single during a four-run fourth off Andrew Heaney (6-7). The Rays were aided by two batters hit by pitches and a wild pitch that allowed Tommy Pham to score from third.

            ***********************

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here……

            13) Oregon State visits Columbus in Ohio State’s football opener; smart people in Las Vegas dropped the spread on the game from 39 to 35.5, on the thought that Urban Meyer might get a one-game slap on the wrist for lying about whatever he knew/didn’t know about the domestic violence situation one of his former assistants was involved in.

Laying 35 instead of 38.5 will still take some onions, if Meyer isn’t coaching.

            12) Pretty sad that people are already speculating that Iowa State coach Matt Campbell will be the guy who replaces Meyer if the OSU administration cans him.

So an Ohio State assistant coach was accused of domestic violence, the head coach apparently lied about knowing the situation existed, and as punishment, Iowa State loses its coach? Seems fair to me.

            11) New Jersey joined Nevada this week as the only states with legalized digital sports wagering. It is still amazing to me how New Jersey was right on top of getting sports betting off the ground, but neighboring NY/Pennsylvania are still dragging their feet.

            10) Philip Evans started Wednesday’s game at 2B for the Mets; he broke his leg when a runner slid into him trying to break up a double play.

Jose Reyes took his place and homered from both sides of the plate, making him the first Met ever to homer from both sides of the plate in a game that he didn’t start.

            9) Every now and then, I do my list of favorite movie scenes and one I’ve neglected to put on there is when Roy Hobbs hits the game-winning homer at the end of The Natural. Amazing music, with Hobbs rounding the bases and the lights from the fireworks reflecting off the glasses of manager Wilford Brimley.

Music is so cool that 35 years later, the Texas Rangers still play it every time one of their players hits a home run in one of their home games.

            8) No idea what to make of it, but supposedly Patrick Mahomes is struggling badly early in Chiefs’ camp— he played one game last year, so he is still a rookie, and all rookies are suspect until they aren’t suspect anymore.

In case you’re wondering (I was), Chad Henne and Matt McGloin are the Chiefs’ backups. Not exactly Earl Morrall or Steve Young as a backup.

You have to remember, the last three years, Kansas City was +14/+16/+15 in turnovers; hard to replicate that with a rookie QB who is likely to make some mistakes. Play-it-safe QB Alex Smith works for the Redskins now.

            7) Caesars Entertainment stock fell 14.8% Wednesday (it was down 24% at one point) as the gaming company revealed a cautious forecast for the upcoming quarter. Not good.

            6) In case you need to borrow some money, Apple now has $243.7B in cash on hand, thats billion, with a B. They had $267.2B on hand in March; meanwhile, I’m going thru the couch cushions trying to get enough money to go to McDonald’s. Must be nice.

            5) Hue Jackson is coach of the Cleveland Browns, the team HBO is focused on this summer as it films Hard Knocks. Coach Jackson’s mother and brother both died in the last two weeks— can’t imagine what that is like, trying to coach your team when you know another bad year will cost you your job- then two of your closest relatives die within two weeks of each other, all while cameras follow you all over training camp.

Jackson’s mom had been ill for a long time, but his brother passed away unexpectedly.

            4) Because of rainouts, Braves are playing 42 days the next 42 days, with two doubleheaders and two days off in there.

            3) Guy I know is a big Chicago Bears fan; he and his wife are headed to Canton today to see Brian Uhrlacher get inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame Saturday night. Hope they have a great time.

Big weekend in that area, with the PGA Tour up the road in Akron.

            2) Few years ago, no pro sports leagues would touch Las Vegas; then the Golden Knights took off on The Strip, the Raiders are a hot ticket with 2020 and a new domed stadium on the horizon and now the NBA is making noise about putting a team in America’s favorite city. Interesting.

            1) I went grocery shopping today; no one asked me for a photo ID. Must’ve been an oversight on their part.

            • LEADING OFF: Archer to make Pirates debut, Rays roll at home
              August 2, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

              MORE THAN A RENTAL

Chris Archer makes his first start for the Pirates in what the team hopes could be the beginning of a long and productive stint in Pittsburgh. The Pirates acquired Archer from the Tampa Bay Rays ahead of Tuesday's non-waiver trade deadline. Pittsburgh also got closer Keone Kela from the Texas Rangers and drew praise around baseball for acquiring players who will remain under team control for years. Archer has options in his contract that could keep him in Pittsburgh through 2021. Kela won't be eligible for free agency until after the 2021 season.

The 29-year-old Archer, a former All-Star, hopes to help the Pirates earn a playoff spot. He made the postseason once in seven seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays. Pittsburgh got back into contention with an 11-game winning streak last month.

              EMPTY HOME-FIELD ADVANTAGE

Tropicana Field is known as a tough place to play - not necessarily because of the Tampa Bay Rays, but because of the quiet, sterile atmosphere and the odd catwalks that sometimes catch balls in play. Tampa Bay ranks 29th among the 30 teams in average attendance, drawing 14,851 per game.

Lately, though, the Rays have done their part. Tampa Bay is 20-4 at the Trop since June 11, the best home record in the majors during that span, and can improve on that mark by winning the opener of a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox on Friday. The Rays have increasingly turned to "bullpen days" during their surge - using a reliever as the ''opener'' to work an inning or two and then turning to a long reliever. That's what they'll do on Friday, too, with Ryne Stanek scheduled to start against Chicago's Lucas Giolito.

              STRUGGLING SEVERINO

The Yankees hope their ace will get back on track amid turmoil at the bottom of their starting rotation. Luis Severino has allowed 17 earned runs over 19 1/3 innings in his last four starts, and the All-Star's ERA has risen from 1.98 to 2.94 during that span. His most recent outing was the worst of the bunch as he allowed six runs in 4 1/3 innings in a loss to Kansas City. He takes the mound Friday against the rival Boston Red Sox and Rick Porcello (13-4, 4.03).

              BRYCE BASHES

The Washington Nationals are scoring runs in bunches, and Bryce Harper is a big reason why. Harper is 7 for 13 over his past four games with a homer and five RBIs, and the Nats followed up their 25-4 romp over the Mets by scoring 15 runs in winning their next two games. Having Adam Eaton and Daniel Murphy healthy enough to play every day has made a difference, along with the emergence of rookie Juan Soto, who's been hitting behind Harper after Washington struggled to protect him through much of the first half.

''When your seven-hole hitter is Daniel Murphy, you've got a chance,'' Harper said after Wednesday's game. ''It's a special lineup.''

                • Giants' Sandoval out for the season
                  August 2, 2018

PHOENIX (AP) San Francisco Giants infielder Pablo Sandoval will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his right hamstring while sliding.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Thursday that the 2012 World Series MVP has a significant tear requiring surgery. Sandoval was injured while sliding into home plate Sunday against San Diego.

The 31-year-old Sandoval was hitting .248 with nine homers and 40 RBIs. He also played first and third base during his second stint with San Francisco.

Sandoval played his first seven seasons with the Giants, then became a free agent and signed a $95 million, five-year contract with Boston after the 2014 season.

He was released by the Red Sox in 2017 and signed with the Giants three days later. San Francisco is paying the $545,000 minimum this year, which is offset against the $18 million Sandoval is owed by Boston.

                        • Friday's Diamond Notes
                          Tony Mejia

                          Hottest team: A's (9-3 last 12, 30-10 +2500 last 40)

After scoring only four runs in Colorado, wasting a great effort from a pitching staff that only surrendered 10 over a three-game span at Coors Field, the A’s have gotten back on track with a sweep of the Blue Jays. They’ve won 75 percent of their games since June 16 and have moved back ahead of Seattle for the second wild card spot behind the Yankees.

Oakland (-175) will be favored all weekend after outscoring Toronto by 24-6 margin in breaking out the brooms and sends lefty Brett Anderson (2-3, 5.55) to the mound for this series opener against fellow southpaw Blaine Hardy (4-3, 3.61). The A’s are 3-1 in Anderson’s starts since returning from the disabled list but have only seen him pitch once at County Stadium all season, his first back with the team since leaving in 2013. The Astros beat him for nine runs on 10 hits over three innings in a 16-2 loss in May.

Coldest team: Marlins (0-3 last three, 3-7, -315 last 10)

The Fish had some fun frustrating the Nationals in consecutive games but fell in Atlanta twice before being rained out and lost the opener of a four-game set in Philadelphia on Thursday, faltering 5-2. They won two of three over the Phillies entering the All-Star break and will look to cool off the surprising NL East leaders, who they will have nine games remaining against counting tonight.

Rookie Trevor Richards (3-5, 4.06) has been a bright spot of late, coming off six shutout innings in a weekend win over Washington and is 1-0 with a 2.30 ERA over his last five outings, so there will probably be some takers on Miami as a ‘dog of about +160. Philadelphia is countering with Vince Velasquez, who is 3-1 with a 2.48 ERA since June 8 and has dominated hitters. He’s been terribly inconsistent throughout his short career and is just 5-5 with a 5.31 ERA at Citizens Bank Park this season. Velasquez won his only start against the Marlins this season and is 3-1 against them over his short career. Philly is playing its only four home games in the midst of a 16-game stretch, so continuing to play well is vital. The Phils have won 11 of their last 14 there.

Hottest pitcher: Marco Gonzales, Mariners (12-5, 3.37)

Over his last 12 starts, the Mariners have won 10 times, which included five straight decisions from June 29-July 29. He’s given up six runs over the past 34 innings, walking just five hitters while striking out 31. Gonzales has the Mariners heavily favored (-160) to rebound from last night’s upset loss to the Blue Jays, who counter with promising rookie lefty Ryan Borucki, who hasn’t allowed a home run in 35 innings. He’s put together five quality starts in his six outings but has pitched in four losses due to three runs of support combined, which bodes well for Gonzales if his groove continues. Seattle’s lefty has never faced anyone in the Toronto lineup besides Troy Tulowitzki, who hasn’t played all season.

Coldest pitcher: Luis Severino, Yankees (14-4, 2.94)

Severino has given up more home runs in his past four starts (7) than he had in his previous 18. He’s failed to get through more than five innings in any of those starts and has dropped consecutive decisions for the first time since last July. The 24-year-old now has to snap out of his slump in time to play stopper with New York in danger of dropping three straight games on the heels of a 15-7 Thursday thumping. The Red Sox could put major distance between themselves and the Yankees if they continue to rake, so their Dominican ace has to step up. He pitched in an 11-1 win on July 1 over the Red Sox and a 3-2 win on May 8 after suffering his first loss of the season in April by a 14-1 count. He’s 3-5 over 11 career appearances against Boston and 1-2 at Fenway, though he’s never given up a home run there. Andrew Benintendi has owned him, hitting 10-for-22 with a pair of homers. Severino will be opposed Rick Porcello but the Yanks are still favored (-130).

Biggest OVER run: Diamondbacks (6-1 last seven)

Only the Cubs (-200) were a larger favorite on Friday morning than the Snakes (-190), who send Patrick Corbin to the mound in the midst of a nice run that has seen him give up two or fewer runs in five of his last seven starts. That might give you pause in backing Arizona's run on the high side to continue despite the number (8.5). Madison Bumgarner ended a D'Backs run of scoring at least five runs in six straight games and 10 of their last 11. Chris Stratton (8-6, 5.14) is coming off the disabled list but was terrific in his only appearance at Chase Field this season, allowing one run over seven innings.

Biggest UNDER run: Twins (9-3 last 12)

The Twins moved Brian Dozier and Eduardo Escobar, so it’s no surprise that there’s been a power outage of late. Minnesota has scored three or fewer runs in five of their last seven and will look to try and break through after a day off against Royals rookie Heath Fillmyer (0-1, 3.29). Jake Odorizzi (4-7, 4.58) has been inconsistent of late, but the books are bullish on him winning this duel despite a 4.44 ERA over five July starts and a rough history against Alex Gordon and Whit Merrifield, posting the slumping Twins as a heavy chalk (-185). Kansas City at +170 could be tempting, especially since Fillmyer gained confidence in pitching well against the Yankees over the weekend. The total has been set at 9.

Matchup to watch: Astros vs. Dodgers

Houston rolls into L.A. as the betting co-favorite (9/4 per Westgate) in the American League alongside Boston. The Dodgers are the N.L. co-favorite with the Cubs (5/2). So, yes, these teams may indeed meet in a second straight World Series, which makes this one tremendous sneak peek.

The Astros are looking for their 70th win, while the Dodgers come off a 21-run explosion in last night's rout of the Brewers to move back into sole possession of first in the NL West. This is definitely a summit meeting, one that bookmakers are granting the proper respect in this opener, basically labeling it a pick'em. .

Kenta Maeda opposes Lance McCullers, Jr. on Saturday and the series wraps up with a great matchup between impressive rookie Walker Buehler and Gerrit Cole, but this series opener has plenty of juice even though Clayton Kershaw worked last night. Lefty Alex Wood (7-5, 3.68) has won his last six decisions and was excellent in last year's postseason against Houston, alllowing one run in 7.2 innings. Justin Verlander (10-6, 2.24) started a pair of games in the 2017 Fall Classic and contributed to the title run, so this is a good spot for him to bounce back since he's 1-4 with a 3.54 ERA over his last eight starts.

Chase Utley landed on the DL for the Dodgers, but Brian Dozier has hit the ground running since being acquired from the Twins and has helped his new team's reach another level. The Astros come in banged up with Jose Altuve (knee), Carlos Correa (back) and Brian McCann (knee) all on the DL and reigning World Series MVP George Springer nursing a sore shoulder.

                          Betcha didn’t know:
Chris Archer didn’t face the Cardinals in his first five seasons in the bigs but finally ran into them for the first time late last August, so it’s interesting they’re who he is matched up against in his first start as National League pitcher. Archer struck out eight Cards in seven innings, one of his finest outings of the season. That means the only hitter he’ll be facing who has had any success against him in the majors will be Greg Garcia, who has two hits in three at-bats. The other Cardinals who have seen him, are a combined 3-for-22 (.136). Archer has only pitched one game at his new home ballpark, losing a 4-0 decision at PNC Park, giving up a pair of homers over an otherwise solid six innings. He’s struck out 50 and allowed only two homers over the last 43.1 innings in Tampa, so the Pirates are hoping he’ll be able to carry that form over to help aid Pittsburgh’s two-month push towards a playoff berth that seemed highly unlikely when the season began. The Pirates are a heavy favorite in the -140/-150 range against the Cards, who come into town with an identical 56-53 record and will throw young John Gant (3-4, 3.49) out there.

Biggest public underdog: Tigers (+165) vs. A's

Biggest line move: Pirates (-133 to -150) vs. Cardinals

                                August 3, 2018

CLEVELAND (AP) Shohei Ohtani hit two home runs in a game for the first time in the major leagues, and the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Cleveland Indians 7-4 on Friday night.

Ohtani, whose four hits were also the most of his big league career, singled in the eighth and scored the go-ahead run on David Fletcher's double.

The Angels won at Progressive Field for the first time since June 17, 2014, breaking a 10-game skid.

Ohtani hit a two-run homer in the first and a solo home run in the third off Mike Clevinger.

Justin Anderson (3-2) pitched the seventh and the Angels' bullpen held the Indians to one run over the final four innings.

Cleveland's bullpen allowed four runs in the eighth to break a 3-all tie. Ohtani started the rally with a one-out single off Oliver Perez (0-1). He stole second and Albert Pujols was intentionally walked with a 3-0 count.

BOSTON (AP) - Rick Porcello pitched a one-hitter, Steve Pearce homered for the fourth time in two nights and Boston beat New York after manager Alex Cora's ejection to open a season-high 7+-game lead in the AL East.

Miguel Andujar's leadoff homer in the third was the only hit allowed by Porcello (13-4), who matched his season high with nine strikeouts and walked none. He retired the last 21 batters and needed only 86 pitches in his first complete game this season.

Cora was ejected one pitch into the bottom of the first. Porcello hit Brett Gardner with an 0-2 pitch starting the game, and New York's Luis Severino (14-5) answered with a high-and-inside fastball when Mookie Betts led off the bottom half.

Severino (14-5) pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs, seven hits and three walks.

                                BREWERS 5, ROCKIES 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Eric Thames hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth off embattled Rockies closer Wade Davis, and Milwaukee beat Colorado.

It was Davis' sixth blown save of the season and his second in as many days after losing in St. Louis on Thursday.

Davis (1-5) struck out Mike Moustakas to start the inning before allowing a pair of one-out walks. After Jonathan Schoop popped out, Thames hit a 1-1 pitch deep into the right-field bleachers to end it.

Miller Park continues to be a house of horrors for Davis, who also allowed a walk-off homer to Travis Shaw in his last appearance at Milwaukee with the Cubs on Sept. 23, 2017.

Corbin Burnes (2-0) came in with a runner on first in the ninth and retired the side for the win.

                                PIRATES 7, CARDINALS 6

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Adam Frazier's RBI single in the eighth inning helped Pittsburgh beat St. Louis in Chris Archer's Pirates debut.

Pittsburgh overcame a rough outing by Archer, acquired from Tampa Bay earlier in the week, as gave up five runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out six and walked four.

The Pirates broke a 6-6 tie in the eighth when Josh Harrison singled with one out off Jordan Hicks (3-3) and Jordy Mercer walked. After pinch-hitter Jose Osuna struck out, Frazier drove in Harrison by grounding a single into center field.

Kyle Crick (2-1) gave up Jedd Gyorko's tying RBI grounder in the top of the eighth.

Felipe Vazquez pitched a scoreless ninth for his 25th save, the most in a season by a Pirates left-hander.

                                BRAVES 2, METS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Ozzie Albies hit a tiebreaking double off Jacob deGrom, Anibal Sanchez pitched six effective innings and Atlanta beat New York for its fifth straight win.

Johan Camargo homered in the second, a drive off the facing of the second deck in right field. DeGrom hit a tying single in the third against Anibal Sanchez (5-7), then allowed Ozzie Albies' go-ahead double in the fifth.

DeGrom (5-7) gave up six hits in eight inning innings while striking out nine and retiring his final 12 batters after Albies doubled. He leads the major leagues with a 1.85 ERA but is 0-5 in seven starts since June 18, tying the most consecutive decisions he has lost in his big league career.

A.J. Minter worked around an error in the ninth to remain perfect in eight save chances.

                                CUBS 5, PADRES 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Javier Baez tied his career high with his 23rd home run and took over the National League lead with 84 RBIs, helping Chicago beat San Diego.

Jose Quintana (10-7) allowed one run and four hits in six innings, leaving with a 3-1 lead.

Pedro Strop nearly wasted a 5-2 advantage, allowing Cory Spangenberg's RBI double and Travis Jankowski's run-scoring grounder before third baseman David Bote threw out Spangenberg at the plate trying to score on Manuel Margot's grounder. Baez had thrown out Jankowski at the plate in the eighth when Jankowski tried to score on Hunter Renfroe's grounder to second.

Strop struck out pinch-hitter Austin Hedges with a man on for his sixth save in nine chances.

Tyson Ross (6-9) gave up three runs and six hits in five innings as the Padres lost for the eighth time in their last nine games.

                                PHILLIES 5, MARLINS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Vince Velasquez allowed two hits in 6 1/3 scoreless innings to lead Philadelphia past Miami.

Seranthony Dominguez recorded the final four outs for his 12th save in 13 chances as the Phillies won their third straight to remain a half-game in front of Atlanta for first place in the NL East.

Velasquez (8-8) struck out seven and walked one to continue his strong form. The right-hander has a 0.71 ERA in his last five appearances. Velasquez didn't allow a hit until Miguel Rojas' two-out single in the fifth.

Brian Anderson had two hits with a double and an RBI for the Marlins, who have lost four in a row.

Velasquez helped himself in the third when the Phillies took a 1-0 lead. He led off with a double to right off Trevor Richards (3-6) for his second extra-base hit in his 97th career at-bat and scored on Rhys Hoskins' single.

                                WHITE SOX 3, RAYS 2, 10 INNINGS

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Yoan Moncada hit a go-ahead double in the 10th inning, lifting Chicago past Tampa Bay.

Nicky Delmonico had a two-out double in the 10th off Jose Alvarado (1-4) and was replaced by pinch-runner Adam Engel. Tim Anderson was intentionally walked, and Moncada hit a liner over left fielder Jake Bauers.

Tyler Danish (1-0) struck out Jesus Sucre with two on and two outs in the ninth, and Hector Santiago got his first save since 2012. He walked Mallex Smith leading off the bottom half of the 10th, Kevin Kiermaier popped up a bunt and Matt Duffy grounded into a double play.

Jose Abreu homered for the White Sox, who won for the ninth time in 24 games and are just 39-70. Tampa Bay is 20-5 at home since June 11.

                                RANGERS 11, ORIOLES 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Rougned Odor hit a grand slam and Joey Gallo and Robinson Chirinos had back-to-back homers in a seven-run fourth inning as Texas beat Baltimore.

Texas has outscored the Orioles 28-11 in winning the first two of a four-game series between last-place teams.

Rookie right-hander Ariel Jurado (2-1) won his second straight start for Texas after a loss in his major league debut. He has twice been recalled from Double-A Frisco, where he was 5-3 with a 3.28 ERA.

Another rookie, Baltimore's David Hess (2-6), didn't make it out of the fourth inning in his 10th major league start.
