MLB Preview – St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs

The St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs continue their long series on Saturday night in a game that can be seen on FOX. The teams played the opener of this five-game series on Thursday and this will be the second of two games on Saturday.

This is a huge series for the Cardinals, as they started on Thursday 7.5 games behind the Cubs in the NL Central and a bad series could end any chance for St. Louis in the division.

The probable pitching matchup for Saturday night has John Gant going against Tyler Chatwood.

Let’s look at the matchup and MLB picks.

The Cardinals won their first game under interim manager Mike Shildt, but it will be interesting to see if the change from Matheny to Shildt will make a difference. St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina said to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the team has enough talent to make a run. “The franchise decided to make a move on the manager, and hopefully that wakes everybody up,” Molina said, “I don’t think we need anybody. We’ve got the talent. We need to play better.”

The Cardinals were 24-22 in their first 46 road games, with 21 games going over, 22 going under, with three pushes. They are scoring 4.4 runs per game and giving up 3.8 per contest.

The Cubs were 28-15 in their first 43 home games, with 18 games going over, 24 going under, with one push. They are scoring 5.1 runs per game and giving up 3.6 per contest.

Starting Pitchers

Gant is 3-3 on the season with a 3.49 ERA. He gave up five hits and two runs last time out against the Giants, but the Cardinals did little on offense and lost 3-2. Gant is 1-1 with a 3.52 ERA in his last three starts.

Chatwood has been a mess for most of this season. He pitched okay last time out against San Diego, as he allowed three earned runs in five innings. Chatwood has a 5.04 ERA this season and walks are a huge problem for him. He leads the league in walks, having given up 73 in 84 innings.

Key Stats

The Cubs are 6-1 in their last 7 home games vs. a right-handed starter. The Cubs are 47-23 in their last 70 home games. The Under is 11-5 in the Cubs last 16 home games vs. a right-handed starter. The Cardinals have had all kinds of trouble against the Cubs at Wrigley, as they were 1-6 in the last seven meetings before this five-game series began.

Cardinals vs. Cubs Picks

The value in this contest is definitely on the Cardinals simply because Chatwood has been awful for Chicago. The Cubs are stubbornly sticking with Chatwood in the rotation, but that patience is going to run out. The Cubs are expected to make a deal before the trading deadline to add a starting pitcher and there is a good chance that Chatwood will lose his starting spot. Gant has been okay for the Cardinals and St. Louis has actually been a decent team on the road. It is somewhat concerning that the Cardinals struggle in Chicago, but at the plus price I will take St. Louis.

I think a hedge is also a good idea in this contest on Saturday night with the total. If the Cubs are going to win this game you have to think it will be a high scoring game simply because Chatwood has been awful. The best case scenario is that the Cardinals win this game and get to Chatwood early and often and that the Cubs also get a few runs. I will take the over in this contest as well and hope to get a win by the Cardinals in a high scoring contest.

MLB Weekend Series Prices Best Bets

Heading into the All-Star break last weekend saw my weekend series best bets split the board for a small profit as Oakland was able to cash as +130 underdogs with wins on Saturday and Sunday over the Giants, while Seattle got swept at Coors Field by Colorado. Hopefully after a refreshing few days off from the baseball scene during the break, I can get back to hitting a few of these weekend series wagers and continue this nice little stretch of weeks I've had with only a minor hiccup or two in-between.

This weekend we've got all the MLB teams back in action, including Oakland hosting San Francisco in a return matchup, but with so many mismatches (at least on paper) out there this week, there are plenty of sizable underdogs that are worth consideration. So let's get right to this week's selections:

L.A Dodgers (-200) vs Milwaukee Brewers (+170)

This is the first matchup that stood out to me as both the Dodgers and Brewers come into the 2nd half of the season with identical 53-43 SU records. Obviously, the Dodgers are the ones that most believe are, and will be the better team this year, especially after they acquired Manny Machado from Baltimore the other day, but I wouldn't be sleeping on this Milwaukee team this weekend, especially with them being at home.

The Brewers are 30-18 SU at home this year and have thrived in the underdog role all year long. They know that the Dodgers are the “flashier” team that everyone expects to win here, but as we've seen with countless other examples in all sports in the past, sometimes it takes a good team a few games to adjust to bringing in a superstar into their fold. Machado will unquestionably help in L.A's pursuit to get back to the World Series this year, but assuming the Dodgers are just going to plug him into their roster and win 10+ games in a row would be a mistake. Milwaukee isn't a bad team by any means and I expect them to thrive this weekend.

Milwaukee is trying to get to L.A's level and with this being the first meeting between these two teams this year, this is a great “measuring stick” series for the Brewers. To get where they want to go, Milwaukee knows they'll have to beat quality teams like the Dodgers in series' and there is no better place to first accomplis that goal then at home. At +170, Milwaukee is loaded with value and potential – even with a struggling Clayton Kershaw slated to start on Saturday – and they've already seen their ML price drop on Friday from +135ish to +120. That's a significant move and whether they win tonight or not (obviously it's better if they do win on Friday), I expect the Brewers to take two of the three games with L.A this weekend.

Best Bet: Milwaukee to win the series (+170)

Baltimore Orioles (+210) vs Toronto Blue Jays (-250)

Speaking of Manny Machado, his former team is in Toronto this weekend for a three-game set against a Blue Jays team that is sizing up their own unloading of assets in the coming days. Baltimore's 2018 campaign has been done for a long time now, and although losing Machado does make them “worse”, really how much worse can they be? I mean once you're wet/soaked, you aren't getting any wetter right?

In fact, now that the Machado trade rumors/talk is done and over with, Baltimore could be on their way to finally drying off (metaphorically speaking) and becoming a fun-loving, free-wheeling team that goes out there and enjoys just playing the game. That's not to say they'll all of a sudden look like a 100-win team, but there often can be addition by subtraction in pro sports and getting rid of all the Machado talk has to be a good thing on some level for Baltimore. But this play is more about playing an overvalued Toronto team here who gets a price bump simply because they are the first one to face a Machado-less Baltimore team.

Toronto is still a team that's nine games below the .500 mark themselves, and with all the news in the city this entire month focused on other professional sports teams – the Maple Leafs signing John Tavares and the Raptors trading for Kawhi Leonard – this Jays team is one I would think could start to look like the 2018 Baltimore Orioles from April to early July until they unload their players who have been the subject of plenty of trade rumors. The Jays are a team that really shouldn't be trusted at any price, at any location, over the next few weeks as they are essentially a “lame duck team” with so many potential trade candidates out there. In other sports bettors always worry about backing a team with a lame duck head coach, and here we've got a team laying -250 that's basically in a similar role. Not one I'd ever want to back and one I'd have no problem betting against.

Best Bet: Baltimore to win the series (+210)

WOOD WORK

A day after hitting three homers and two doubles in just six innings, Cardinals slugger Matt Carpenter tries to torment the Cubs over a doubleheader. Carpenter drove in seven before getting pulled early in St. Louis' 18-5 thrashing at Wrigley Field on Friday. He tied the major league record for extra-base hits in a game, and became the first player to do it in just six innings. He'll look to inflict more damage against starters Tyler Chatwood (3-5, 5.04) and Mike Montgomery (3-3, 3.91).

DEGROM WATCH

Jacob deGrom knows he could be traded this month, but he says his preference is to remain with the Mets. His agent, Brodie van Wagenen, said this week that if New York is not interested in a long-term deal for the 30-year-old All-Star right-hander, it should consider trade options. DeGrom said Friday in New York that ''I want to win here'' and he hopes ''the feeling is mutual.''

Mets assistant general manager John Ricco said the team has been in touch with van Wagenen but that New York will do what's best for the organization.

''We certainly respect Jacob's position clearly,'' Ricco said. ''But we also have an obligation to do what's best for the organization, whether that's trading him, extending him or letting the contract play out.''

HEATING UP

Big Sexy might look more like Big Sweaty in Texas.

Bartolo Colon, the Rangers' portly 45-year-old right-hander, pitches on a weekend featuring record heat in Arlington. The Rangers opened a series against Cleveland on Friday night with a first-pitch temperature of 107 degrees, the highest ever at the start of a game at Texas' 25-year-old ballpark. The expected high Saturday is 109 degrees, with the teams set to play at night. The forecast during Sunday afternoon's finale calls for a high of 108. The hottest temperature for a game this season is 108 degrees, set when the Angels hosted the Dodgers on July 7.

Colon is making his third attempt to break a tie with Dennis Martinez for the most wins in the majors by a native of Latin America. Colon and Martinez each have 245 victories.

OZZIE OUT

The Braves are being cautious with All-Star second baseman Ozzie Albies after he was pulled Friday with right hamstring tightness, likely holding him out for a couple of days to recover. The 21-year-old returned from the All-Star break leading the NL in at-bats (405) and runs (74), and he was tied for the league lead in doubles (29) with teammate and fellow All-Star Nick Markakis. Albies is batting .283 with 20 home runs and 55 RBIs. Atlanta will continue a series against the Nationals.

Sunday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) Damn, there was some serious drama in my neighborhood Saturday.

I live on a quiet suburban street just outside Albany; went out to meet my cousin for dinner at 7:00 last night and Central Avenue, the main street in town, was totally barracaded off west of my street by the local police. That never happens here.

Turns out a Cadillac was speeding in the eastbound lanes towards Albany and the police gave chase— finally the Cadillac smashed into one of the police cars. The Cadillac was disabled on the side of the road, missing a tire. Everyone was OK- they shut down the road to do the CSI-type re-creation of the scene, for the investigation of whatever other crime there was.

12) So a word of thanks to the Colonie Police for protecting us and keeping our town safe.

11) Bad news for the Mets: Yoenis Cespedes says the cause of his medical issues is calcification in both heels. He says the only way to fix the issue is surgery; the recovery time is apparently 8-10 months. Might as well get it done now, right?

10) This from an outstanding article written by West Virginia alum/Memphis Grizzlies’ rookie Jevon Carter, talking about practices under his college coach, Bob Huggins:

“And the treadmill was our punishment if we made a mistake in practice. POWER SURGE

Matt Carpenter tries to homer in his seventh straight game when the Cardinals complete a five-game series against the rival Cubs at Wrigley Field. The teams split a day-night doubleheader Saturday and Carpenter homered in both ends - even though he didn't start the second game. He entered as a defensive replacement in the sixth inning and hit a solo drive in the seventh for his fifth homer in two days. He also had a solo shot in the opener after going 5 for 5 with three homers and seven RBIs while playing just six innings in St. Louis' 18-5 victory Friday. Carpenter became the first player in Cardinals history to homer in six consecutive games during one season. He matched the club record held by Mark McGwire, who connected in six straight games over two years.

PRIME TIME IN THE BIG APPLE

In the rubber game of their Subway Series at Yankee Stadium, the New York Mets send All-Star ace Jacob deGrom (5-4, 1.68 ERA) to the mound against Aaron Judge and the Bronx Bombers at 8:05 p.m. EDT. Sporting the lowest ERA in the majors this season, deGrom is 0-2 with an 8.03 ERA in two career starts at Yankee Stadium. Masahiro Tanaka (7-2, 4.54) pitches for the Yankees.

BUCS BARRELING ALONG

Corey Dickerson and the Pirates go for their ninth victory in a row when they face Matt Harvey and the Reds in Cincinnati. Dickerson hit two first-pitch home runs Saturday night during a 6-2 win that extended Pittsburgh's longest streak since an eight-game run in September 2015. Ivan Nova (5-6) opposes Harvey (5-5), who is 4-0 over his last five starts and hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in any of them.

BULLPEN BOOST

The surprising Athletics, who have surged into the AL wild-card picture, could have a new arm in the bullpen for their interleague game against Bay Area rival San Francisco. Oakland obtained reliever Jeurys Familia from the Mets on Saturday for two minor leaguers and $1 million in international signing bonus pool allotment. Familia, an All-Star in 2016, was at Yankee Stadium on Saturday morning but left before the start of the Mets' 7-6 loss. He'll join an A's relief corps that includes All-Star closer Blake Treinen. ''For already having a good bullpen, to be able to bring in an arm like this, man, it's pretty significant,'' manager Bob Melvin said. ''I'll certainly talk to him before I say how this is going to be deployed as far as what innings for who. But this is a real significant pickup for us. You can't ask for much more.''

ALL-STAR ARMS

After getting rained out Saturday, the NL East rival Braves and Nationals are scheduled to conclude their series in Washington with a potential matchup of All-Stars on the mound. Padres-Phillies to play DH on Sunday

PHILADELPHIA (AP) The game between the San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies has been postponed because of the threat of all-day rain, forcing the teams to play a day-night doubleheader Sunday.

It's the 40th postponement of the season, one more than 2017.

Sunday's regularly scheduled game will move up from 1:35 p.m. to 12:05 p.m. The second game is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.

All fans holding tickets for Saturday's postponed game may attend the second game Sunday using their original tickets.

Nick Pivetta (6-7) will start for the NL East-leading Phillies and Luis Perdomo (1-4) will go for the Padres in the first game. Vince Velasquez (5-8) is set to start the second game for Philadelphia. San Diego hasn't announced its starter.

Braves-Nationals rained out on Saturday

WASHINGTON (AP) The game between the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals has been postponed because of the threat of all-day rain.

The makeup date was not announced at the time of the postponement Saturday.

The series between the NL East rivals is scheduled to conclude Sunday with the All-Star pitching matchup of Mike Foltynewicz (7-5, 2.66) against Max Scherzer (12-5, 2.41). That game is to start 1:35 p.m., though rain is forecast.

Braves pitcher Sean Newcomb (8-5, 3.51 ERA) and the Nationals' Gio Gonzalez (6-6, 3.72) were Saturday's scheduled starting pitchers.

The Braves, battling Philadelphia for the division lead, beat Washington 8-5 on Friday. Washington fell to 48-49 with the loss and has dropped three of four games.
