      Does Defense Matter?

Everyone has heard the saying 'Defense Wins Championships', but does that equate to the national pastime? Not necessarily. Some of the best defensive clubs in baseball actually have a poor overall winning percentage, as offense, pitching, etc. can overcome defensive deficiencies. So if you like to target certain aspects of the game, avoid the best defensive clubs theory, as it can be hit or miss. For instance, the Chicago Cubs rank 23rd in fielding percentage at .983, but they are just a half-game back of the Milwaukee Brewers for first place. And the Brewers are just ahead of them at 22nd on the list. The Kansas City Royals are one of the best defensive clubs in the American League, ranking third with a .987 fielding percentage. However, K.C. has the worst winning percentage in baseball at .280.

      FIELDING PERCENTAGE VS. WINNING PERCENTAGE
      Team Record Team Record
      Arizona .990 - .547 St. Louis .978 - .511
      Colorado .990 - .521 Chicago White Sox .979 - .344
      Washington .989 - .500 Texas .980 - .432
      Houston .989 - .649 Philadelphia .980 - .570
      L.A. Angels .987 - .511 Toronto .982 - .462

      Looking Ahead

      Saturday, July 14

The Giants and Athletics continue their Bay Bridge Series on Saturday night from AT&T Park. San Francisco pounded Oakland in Friday's game by a 7-1 score as the total pushed. The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the A's against National League West teams and a 6-0 run in interleague games. Despite the loss they're still 19-8 across the past 27 games overall. Oakland looks to bounce back, and they're 4-1 in their past five during the second game of a series, and they're 5-1 in the past six against right-handed starting pitchers. However, Brett Anderson isn't exactly a key to success. The A's are just 3-7 over his past 10 starts against a team with a winning record, and 2-5 in his past seven on the road against a team with a winning overall mark. The Giants improved to 19-7 in their past 26 at home with Friday's victory. They'll really put that to the test with Jeff Samardzija on the hill. The Giants are 1-4 over his past five home starts, and 0-6 in his past six overall. San Francisco is also just 9-26 across Samardzija's past 35 starts against a team with a winning overall mark.

The Brewers and Pirates hook up for a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Remember, approximately 26 percent of all double dips result in a sweep, meaning nearly three-quarters end in a split. Pittsburgh has won five of the past six in the opening game of a doubleheader. Of coure, they're 4-0 in the past four seconds games of a doubleheader, too. That doesn't sound good for the Brewers, especially since they're 2-6 in their past eight against the National League Central Division, while going 1-6 in their past seven road outings. It sounds all Pittsburgh all day according to the trends, but the Bucs are 1-7 in the past eight Saturday contests, for whatever that's worth.

The Yankees and Indians have split the first two games of the series. They'll face former Indians hurler CC Sabathia while countering with Mike Clevinger. The current assortment of Indians haven't handled the twig against the hefty lefty very well, as the current Indians roster is collectively hitting .212 against CC, with just two homers, 16 RBI, 14 walks and 53 strikeouts over 208 at-bats with a subpar .547 OPS. Edwin Encarnacion is the only Cleveland batter with any measure of success, going 15-for-57 (.263) with four doubles and four RBI. The Yankees are 20-6 in Sabathia's past 26 starts against a team with a winning record, and 41-19 in the past 60 against AL Central foes. However, they're 1-4 in the past five road outings by Sabathia.

      Weather Report

The Royals and White Sox might have some difficulty getting started on Saturday. There is a 45 percent chance of thunderstorms at first pitch, and the forecast calls for 60 percent of greater chance of precipitation throughout the late afternoon and evening hours. The Diamondbacks and Braves will also experiencing a 50 percent or greater chance of thunderstorms from 4:10pm ET through at least 8pm, so a lengthy delay or postponement is possible.

In New York, the Nationals and Mets won't be worrying about precipitation. However, there will be a stiff wind affecting play. The forecast calls for winds from 12-15 mph blowing out from home plate to straightaway center field.

      Sunday, July 15

The Tigers will face former ace Justin Verlander and the Astros on Sunday. It will be his first time facing the Tigers since being traded at the non-waiver trade deadline last season. While he has been impressive overall this season with a 9-4 record, 2.05 ERA and 160 strikeouts over 131 2/3 innings over 20 starts, he has been even better at home. Verlander is 2- with a 2.10 ERA in 11 starts at home with 97 strikeouts over 73 innings while holding the opposition to a .166 average. Only two current Tigers have faced Verlander more than 13 times, with Victor Martinez with the longest history. He is 13-for-46 (.283) with three doubles, four homers and nine RBI while posting a .907 OPS.

The Angels have hit the skids after starting the season on the roll away from home. The Halos have dropped another one against the Dodgers on Friday night, 3-2. The Angels slipped to 4-14 across the past 18 road outings, and they're now 7-16 over the past 23 against a team with a winning overall record. For the Dodgers, it's the complete opposite, as they have won five in a row at home, while going 24-9 in the past 33 interleague games at Dodger Stadium. They also improved to 20-8 in their past 28 against teams with a winning record after Friday's outing.

The under cashed in Friday's Freeway Series battle, and is now 7-1 in the past eight meetings overall in this series. The under is also 12-5 in the past 17 at Chavez Ravine, not including Saturday's battle. For the Angels, the under is 6-1-1 in the past eight on the road, and 4-0-1 in the past five against NL West clubs. The under is also a whopping 15-2-1 in the past 18 interleague battles aginst a team with a winning overall mark after Friday's result. The under is also 6-2 in the past eight for the Angels against winning teams. For the Dodgers, the under on Friday was their first in five tries at home. However, the under is an impressive 7-1 in their past eight overall heading into Saturday.

The Cubs will finish off the second half with a battle against the Padres. Chicago is 5-0 in Jon Lester's past five road outings, and an impressive 32-6 in the past 38 starts against a team with a losing record. Chicago is also 11-4 in the past 15 starts against National League West foes. They're also 15-3 in the past 18 road outings against a team with a losing record, and 50-21 in his past 71 starts overall. He is working on six days of rest, and the Cubbies are 6-2 in his past eight when facing six or more days of rest. On the flip side, the Padres are 6-18 in the past 24 against left-handed starting pitchers.

      Weather Report

On Sunday, it looks like a day free of precipitation. However, winds will be a factor in at least two California venues. at AT&T Park, the battle between the A's and Giants will see winds gusting from 17-20 mph from home plate to straightaway center field. For the Cubs-Padres game, the winds will be blowing from left to right at a 10-13 mph clip.

      • LEADING OFF: Utley retirement tour, Gray back from minors
        July 13, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

        STEPPING AWAY

The Chase Utley retirement tour is underway. Utley announced Friday that he will retire at the end of the season, capping a 16-year career that included a World Series championship with Philadelphia and an elder statesman role with the Dodgers. The six-time All-Star said he's leaving to spend more time with his wife and two young sons. Utley announced his decision at a jammed news conference at Dodger Stadium, with several of his teammates surprising him by crowding into the small room. Utley has 259 career homers with a .276 average and 1,880 hits, though he'll likely get some Hall of Fame support from voters inclined toward advanced analytics.

        WELCOME BACK

Jon Gray is set to return from Triple-A and start for Colorado against Seattle. Gray was expected to be the Rockies' ace, but he's been hit hard this season, going 7-7 with a 5.77 ERA before being demoted to work on mechanics and clear his head at Albuquerque. Gray will face emerging left-hander Wade LeBlanc (5-0, 3.39), who is having a breakout season at 33 years old.

        NOLA'S STAR

Phillies righty Aaron Nola (12-2, 2.27) will make his last start before possibly starting next week's All-Star Game when Philadelphia visits Miami. Nola ranks third in the NL in ERA, and the timing of his start Saturday could make him the best option for NL manager Dave Roberts in next Tuesday's All-Star showdown. It will be Nola's first All-Star appearance.

        COLE RETURN

Houston starter Gerrit Cole will come off the bereavement list when the Astros host Detroit. Cole (9-2) was placed on the list Tuesday following the death of his grandmother, a day after throwing six scoreless innings in a loss to Oakland. In his first season with Houston following an offseason trade from Pittsburgh, Cole is sixth in the AL in ERA (2.57) and second in strikeouts (169).

        HAMMY WHAMMY

The NL Central-leading Brewers are hoping for good news on slugger Eric Thames a day after he left a game with a tight right hamstring. Thames was making a rare start in right field and was injured while playing a ball hit into the corner. Milwaukee has asked Thames recently to handle more outfield duties to make space for All-Star Jesus Aguilar at first base, but now the Brewers may be without their hulking leadoff hitter, who is batting .250 with 13 homers and a .344 on-base percentage. Milwaukee has a doubleheader scheduled against Pittsburgh.

        CC IN CLEVELAND

CC Sabathia pitches at Progressive Field as the Yankees and Indians continue a four-game series. Sabathia is 51-41 in 123 career starts at the stadium, including during his run as Cleveland's ace from 2001-08. The Indians will counter with Mike Clevinger (7-4, 3.34) as they try to stretch their AL Central lead heading into the All-Star break.

        VOTH'S TURN

Nationals right-hander Austin Voth has been promoted to the majors four times this season, only to be sent back down the first three times without making an appearance. Voth is expected to finally make his debut in a start again the Mets. Voth has gone 4-5 with a 3.55 ERA in 15 starts this season for Triple-A Syracuse.

          • Bogaerts' grand slam gets Red Sox back to winning ways
            July 14, 2018

BOSTON (AP) Xander Bogaerts hit a game-ending grand slam with one out in the 10th inning, and J.D. Martinez hit his major league-leading 29th homer to carry the Boston Red Sox to a 6-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday.

Martinez increased his major league-leading RBI total to 80 with a solo shot and red-hot Mookie Betts extended his hitting streak to 12 games with three singles to raise his majors' best average to .362 for Boston.

The AL East-leading Red Sox had their 10-game winning streak halted Friday. They haven't lost two straight since June 19 and 20.

Betts reached on error against Chris Rowley (0-1) when shortstop Gurriel, who moved there in the top of the inning, had his grounder go right through his legs. Brock Holt had a hit-and-run single and Martinez was intentionally walked before Bogaerts hit his shot to left-center.

Craig Kimbrel (2-1) pitched a hitless 10th for the victory.

            ANGELS 5, DODGERS 4, 10 INNINGS

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Kole Calhoun homered on his first pitch from All-Star closer Kenley Jansen (0-3) in the 10th inning, lifting the Angels over the Dodgers after blowing two leads.

Four of the Angels' five games against the Dodgers this season have been decided by one run. The Angels lead the season series 3-2.

The Angels led 3-0 in the second and 4-3 in the seventh before the Dodgers rallied twice to tie the game. The Dodgers put the potential tying run on in the bottom of the 10th when Andrew Toles doubled to deep left. Justin Upton collided with the wall trying to make the catch and the trainer came out to check on him, although he stayed in the game.

Toles took third on a passed ball by but pinch-hitter Chase Utley flied out to center and Yasmani Grandal struck out swinging against Jose Alvarez (4-3) to end the game.

            ROYALS 5, WHITE SOX 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Jorge Bonifacio homered for the first time since he was suspended for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance, and Kansas City beat Chicago for just its second win in July.

The 25-year-old Bonifacio broke into the majors last year, hitting 17 homers in 113 games for Kansas City. But he missed the first part of this season after a positive test for Boldenone, resulting in an 80-game suspension.

Duffy (5-8) struck out eight while pitching seven innings of four-hit ball. He tossed six scoreless innings at Minnesota on Monday night, but left with a no-decision after the Twins rallied for a 3-1 win.

The White Sox lost for the seventh time in nine games. Reynaldo Lopez (4-7) allowed five runs and nine hits in 7 2/3 innings in his first start since his wife, Jhilaris, gave birth to a baby girl named Zoe on Friday.

            MARLINS 2, PHILLIES 0

MIAMI (AP) - All-Star Aaron Nola gave up two runs in the first inning and Philadelphia never recovered, losing to Miami.

The NL East-leading Phillies have scored only 24 runs in their past nine games.

Nola (12-3) needed 31 pitches to get through the first. After he loaded the bases with none out, one run scored on a groundout, and another came home on Martin Prado's two-out single. In that one inning, Nola surrendered as many runs as he had given up in his previous three starts combined.

Trevor Richards (3-5) pitched six innings and didn't allow a run. Three relievers completed the eight-hitter, and Kyle Barraclough pitched around a pair of two-out singles in the ninth for his ninth save and the Marlins' eighth shutout.

            DIAMONDBACKS 3, BRAVES 0

ATLANTA (AP) - Zack Greinke added another road win to his strong first half by allowing only four hits in 7 2/3 innings, extending Atlanta's offensive slump, and Arizona shut out the Braves.

Greinke (10-5), named to the NL All-Star team on Thursday as a replacement for Chicago's Jon Lester, has won five straight decisions. The 34-year-old right-hander has been especially strong away from home, winning five straight road starts since June 8.

Ketel Marte hit a sixth-inning homer for Arizona, who has won the first two games of the three-game series and has matched its 2017 team record of 53 wins before the All-Star break. Brad Boxberger pitched around a one-out single by Nick Markakis in the ninth for his 24th save.

Sean Newcomb (8-5) allowed three runs on four hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings. He has issued 12 walks in three starts this month.

            ASTROS 9, TIGERS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Gerrit Cole struck out eight in 5 2/3 strong innings, and Houston hit three home runs in a win over Detroit.

Cole (10-2) allowed one run and three hits with four walks after being activated from the bereavement list prior to the game. He threw six shutout innings in his last start Monday against Oakland.

Josh Reddick and Evan Gattis hit back-to-back solo homers in the fifth to chase Detroit starter Michael Fulmer (3-9). Tyler White added a two-run shot to left in the seventh.

Fulmer gave up seven runs and a season-high 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings. He lost his fourth straight decision and has allowed at least three runs in each of his last five outings.

            METS 7, NATIONALS 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Zack Wheeler won for the first time since April 29, Michael Conforto homered and New York defeated Washington.

Wilmer Flores, Jose Reyes and Kevin Plawecki each had two hits as the light-hitting Mets scored seven runs for the first time since June 24. New York came into the game last in the National League in batting average and was tied with San Diego for the third-fewest runs scored in the majors.

Wheeler (3-6) was brilliant for seven innings before tiring in the eighth in his longest outing since June 19, 2014. He struck out seven and allowed just one hit through the first five innings.

New York roughed up Austin Voth (0-1), who allowed all seven runs and struck out three in his major league debut.

Jeurys Familia pitched a perfect for his 17th save in 21 chances.

            RAYS 19, TWINS 6

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jake Bauers homered for the second straight game and drove in four runs, Carlos Gomez homered and had two RBIs, and Tampa Bay Ray scored 15 times in the final three innings to rally past Minnesota.

C.J. Cron hit a two-run homer and Jesus Sucre, who entered in the sixth for injured catcher Wilson Ramos, drove in two runs for Tampa Bay. The Rays posted season-highs in runs and hits (20) after entering the game 2-34 this season when trailing after six innings.

Jamie Schultz (1-0) walked three batters in 2 2/3 hitless innings as Tampa Bay overcame a short start by Chris Archer.

Zach Duke (3-3) gave up three runs and managed to retire just two batters in relief of Minnesota starter Jose Berrios. Eddie Rosario had three hits and two RBIs, but the Twins fell for the second time in nine games on their current homestand.

            PIRATES 2, BREWERS, FIRST GAME

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Starling Marte and Gregory Polanco hit back-to-back homers in the first inning, and that was enough to push Pittsburgh victory over the Milwaukee in the first game of a doubleheader.

Marte sent an 0-1 pitch from Chase Anderson (6-7) over the center field wall to put the Pirates ahead 1-0. Polanco then drove Anderson's 3-2 offering over the wall in right for his 15th long ball.

Richard Rodriguez (2-2) got the win, retiring all four batters he faced in relief of starter Ivan Nova.

Felipe Vazquez got the final three outs to earn his career-best 22nd save in 26 opportunities.

PIRATES 6, BREWERS 2, SECOND GAME

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Starling Marte and Gregory Polanco hit back-to-back home runs for the second time on the day, and Pittsburgh won the second game of a doubleheader over Milwaukee.

With the Pirates leading 3-0 in the eighth, Marte hit his 13th homer over the left-field wall before Polanco hit his 16th over the wall in right-center to make it 5-0.

Marte extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a ground-rule double in the sixth.

In his second major league start, Clay Holmes (1-1) allowed no runs on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks for his first win.

Brent Suter (8-6) went five innings for Milwaukee, allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

            ATHLETICS 4, GIANTS 3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Pinch-hitter Mark Canha hit a go-ahead home run in the seventh inning and Oakland continued its late-game success, rallying to beat San Francisco.

Stephen Piscotty and Marcus Semien had two hits apiece. Khris Davis added a sacrifice fly to help the A's improve to 20-6 since June 16, tied with Boston for the best record in the majors during that stretch.

Josh Phegley started the seventh with a leadoff single against Tony Watson (2-3). Canha followed with his 12th home run, a towering two-run blast, and emphatically flipped his bat and stared into the A's dugout before trotting around the bases.

Yusmeiro Petit (4-2) retired eight batters to win. All-Star closer Blake Treinen pitched the ninth for his 24th save.

            YANKEES 5, INDIANS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) - Austin Romine came all the way around to score when Cleveland committed two errors on his routine double in the seventh inning, and New York edged the Indians.

Didi Gregorius hit a three-run homer and Greg Bird added a solo shot for the Yankees, who moved 30 games over. 500 and kept pace with the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox.

Indians All-Star Jose Ramirez belted his 29th homer, giving the third baseman as many homers as he had all last season - and tying Mickey Mantle's record for the most by a switch-hitter before the break.

David Robertson (7-3) struck out three, Dellin Bentances worked the eighth and Aroldis Chapman got his 26th save in 27 tries.

After the Indians tied it in the sixth when Ramirez scored from second on an infield single, the Yankees took a 5-4 lead in the seventh off Mike Clevinger (7-5).

            CUBS 11, PADRES 6

SAN DIEGO (AP) - All-Star slugger Javier Baez hit a three-run home run and drove in five, Kyle Schwarber and Ian Happ also went deep and NL Central-leading Chicago beat San Diego.

Baez, voted to start at second base in his first All-Star Game, hit a no-doubt shot to right-center field off Phil Hughes in the ninth inning, and the thousands of Cubs fans at Petco Park chanted ''Javy! Javy! Javy!'' as the 25-year-old from Puerto Rico rounded the bases. It was his 19th.

Kyle Hendricks (6-8) won for the first time in five starts, holding San Diego to two runs and five hits in five innings, with three strikeouts and no walks. He allowed Eric Hosmer's two-run homer in the first, his 10th.

That lead was gone by the fourth. Happ homered to center field off Luis Perdomo (1-4) leading off the second, his 11th. Schwarber homered to left on a line shot after Happ walked opening the fourth. It was Schwarber's 18th.

            ROCKIES 4, MARINERS 1

DENVER (AP) - Jon Gray returned from a two-week demotion to the minors to pitch effectively into the eighth inning, Carlos Gonzalez homered and Colorado extended its strong finish to the season's first half by beating Seattle.

Ian Desmond added a one-out RBI triple in the fifth that chased Wade LeBlanc (5-1), who lost for the first time in his 22 career starts for Seattle. Nolan Arenado, on his bobblehead night, doubled, singled and drove in a run, helping Colorado win for the ninth time in 11 games heading into Sunday's final game before the All-Star break.

Gray (8-7) allowed one run on five hits in 7 1/3 innings while striking out six and walking none. He did not allow a hit until Jean Segura singled to start the fourth.

Wade Davis pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 27th save.

            ORIOLES 1, RANGERS 0

BALTIMORE (AP) - Rookie Yefry Ramirez and four relievers combined on a four-hitter, Jonathan Schoop drove in a run with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly and Baltimore beat Texas in a matchup of last-place teams.

Making his fourth start and bidding for his first major league victory, Ramirez pitched five innings of two-hit ball before being pulled in a scoreless game.

Brad Brach (1-2), Donnie Hart and Mychal Givens followed before Zach Britton worked the ninth for his third save.

After languishing on the disabled list for 11 weeks, Rangers lefty Martin Perez (2-4) allowed one run and five hits over seven innings in his first start since April 29. It was the best of his six starts this season, but he didn't get a win to show for it.

            REDS 8, CARDINALS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jose Peraza had a career-best five hits, Scooter Gennett drove in two runs and Cincinnati waited out a pair of rain delays before beating St. Louis.

St. Louis fired manager Mike Matheny after the game. Matheny was 591-473 over seven seasons as Cardinals manager.

Following the two days that totaled 2 hours, 43 minutes, Cincinnati trailed 2-0 after five innings before rallying for eight runs in its final four at-bats.

Gennett hit a 100 mph fastball off Jordan Hicks (3-2) to right field for a single to drive in Billy Hamilton with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to put the Reds ahead 3-2.

Austin Brice (2-2) retired both batters he faced in the sixth after replacing Kyle Crockett, who opened the inning.

                Sunday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……..

                13) No Sunday Night Baseball this week on ESPN? They have a freakin’ softball game on ESPN at 8:00 Sunday night. How about baseball/ESPN actually trying to promote the sport and put the Futures’ Game on Sunday night? You know, the stars of the future?

                12) Does baseball need more 8-foot high outfield fences? Spectacular catches like the one Billy Hamilton made in St Louis Friday night make for great highlights.

                11) Matt Harvey is 4-1, 2.38 in his last six starts; can the Reds get anything for him at the trading deadline?

                10) Mookie Betts is first player with two triples and two runs scored in first two innings of a game since September 23, 1995, when Lance Johnson did it for the White Sox against Minnesota.

                9) Mets’ manager Mickey Callaway talked with Dom Smith Saturday; there is concern that Smith has lost focus because he is worrying about getting demoted back to AAA. The Mets are a mess.

                8) Players receive a total of $1,500 in meal money during the 12-day Las Vegas Summer League; each player has his own room in a 5-star hotel, and gets a free plane ticket to anywhere in the country when the tournament is finished.

                7) Notre Dame alum Jack Cooley is playing in the Las Vegas Summer League for the 6th year in a row; he played in his 32nd summer league game Friday, tying the all-time record (Dionte Christmas).

Cooley has played in 23 NBA games, seven with San Antonio LY.

                6) Zac Rosscup will be the 27th different pitcher used by the Dodgers this season, and it is only the All-Star break; their team record is 31, set in 2015, ’16.

                5) Quote of the Day, part 2, from Celtics’ Jaylen Brown:
“I think if you can serve in the military at 18, you should be able to play in the NBA. That would be my argument.”

                Alrighty then.

                4) NBA doings:
                — Georges Niang signed a three-year, $5M contract with Utah Jazz that contains a first-year guarantee.
                — Jabari Parker signs with the Chicago Bulls, a two-year, $40M deal. In his 4-year NBA career, Parker has missed 145 of 328 games due to injuries.

                3) Former Wisconsin/Arkansas coach Bret Bielema is now a defensive assistant coach with the Patriots. New England lost DC Matt Patricia to the Lions last winter.

                2) Oakland A’s gave their first-round draft pick Kyler Murray a $4.6M signing bonus; Murray will be Oklahoma’s QB this fall, before starting his baseball career.

Murray’s coach at Oklahoma is Lincoln Riley; he makes $4.8M a year.

                1) FBI informed Maryland officials that the state’s voter registration, election management system operate on a software platform owned by a Russian-financed firm, AltPoint Capital Partners, whose largest investor is a Russian oligarch, Vladimir Potanin.

                Nothing to worry about there.

                • LEADING OFF: Braves skidding into break, Ramos out of ASG
                  July 14, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Sunday:

                  STAR-STUDDED SLIDE

Despite boasting an NL-best four All-Stars, the Braves are freefalling going into the midsummer break. Atlanta has lost 8 of 10, including the first two games of its series against Arizona, to drop out of first place in the NL East. Julio Teheran (6-6, 4.26) tries to get the Braves a victory to close out the unofficial first half against the Diamondbacks' Patrick Corbin (6-3, 3.09).

                  AILING ALL-STAR

Rays catcher Wilson Ramos said he's ''probably'' going to the DL after experiencing left hamstring tightness Saturday and will miss next week's All-Star Game as well. Ramos was voted the AL's starting catcher, his second All-Star nod overall, and has hit .297 with 14 home runs and 53 RBIs this season. ''I worked really hard to make that team,'' a disappointed Ramos said. Cleveland catcher Yan Gomes was named to the AL team in Ramos' place.

                  KRAKEN SIGHTING

Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez is expected to begin a rehab stint with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as he recovers from a groin strain. Sanchez has been sidelined since June 25, but has steadily improved in recent days and is ready to return to the field. New York manager Aaron Boone said that if Sanchez continues to progress, the plan is for him to start behind the plate in the club's first game after the All-Star break - July 20 against the Mets.

                  ALL-STAR RETURN

Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas will make his final appearance before Tuesday's All-Star Game when he starts the series finale against Cincinnati. Mikolas (10-3, 2.65) has been one of the bright spots in an otherwise up-and-down season for St. Louis, doing so in his first year back in the U.S. after three seasons in Japan. The right-hander won't pitch in the All-Star Game because of his start on the first half's final day, but he'll still receive the full honors in Washington.

                  KERSHAW IN FORM

It's been a frustrating season physically for Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, who has made two trips to the disabled list - one because of biceps tendinitis and another with a lower back strain. The left-hander has made four starts since his latest return, and he looked like his usual dominant self in his last outing while throwing six scoreless innings in a win over San Diego earlier this week. Kershaw (3-4, 2.61) will close out the first half when he starts against the Angels.

                      • Cardinals fire Matheny with team hovering near .500
                        July 14, 2018

ST. LOUIS (AP) The St. Louis Cardinals aren't accustomed to stretches of mediocrity, and certainly not to reports of clubhouse unrest.

The prospect of a third straight year without a postseason berth has spelled the end for manager Mike Matheny.

Matheny was stunningly fired Saturday night following an 8-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds, a defeat that dropped St. Louis to 47-46 and seven games back of the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs.

Bench coach Mike Shildt was named the team's interim manager. Hitting coach John Mabry and assistant hitting coach Bill Mueller were also fired.

The Cardinals haven't missed three straight postseasons since 1997-99.

''These decisions are never easy, but we felt that a change in leadership was necessary as the team prepares to enter into the second half of the season,'' Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak said. ''I would like to thank Mike for his exceptional commitment and devotion to the Cardinals organization, including many fond memories of our years working together.''

This will be the club's first midseason managerial change since Joe Torre was replaced by Mike Jorgensen in 1995.

Matheny went 591-473 as manager, and his tenure included a loss to the Boston Red Sox in the 2013 World Series. Matheny was a Gold Glove Award-winning catcher with St. Louis from 2000-04 before getting his first managerial job with the club prior to the 2012 season.

The Cardinals made the playoffs in Matheny's first four years before missing the past two postseasons.

Near the end of last season, St. Louis chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. defended and praised Matheny, telling the St. Louis Post-Dispatch the manager was ''the right guy to lead us into the future.''

That future ended 93 games into this season. The Cardinals have underperformed on offense and struggled in recent weeks amid reports of locker room discontent - primarily between struggling outfielder Dexter Fowler and Matheny.

This season started with promise. The Cardinals acquired cleanup hitter Marcell Ozuna from the Miami Marlins during the offseason, and they had high hopes for right-hander Alex Reyes in his return to the rotation after missing all of last season following Tommy John surgery.

Ozuna has failed to live up to lofty expectations, entering Saturday night's game hitting .270 and with 10 home runs. Reyes missed the first two months of the season while rehabbing, then was lost again for the year after injuring his shoulder in his first start back with St. Louis.

Fowler, in his second season since leaving the Chicago Cubs to join St. Louis, has been at the center of the Cardinals' offensive woes - hitting just .169 entering Saturday's game and the focal point of reported clubhouse tension.

Matheny has limited the outfielder's playing time of late, and Mozeliak recently said he couldn't defend Fowler's ''effort and his energy level.'' The Athletic cited multiple sources in reporting that Matheny and Fowler have barely spoken in months. The Athletic also reported this week about a rocky relationship between veteran closer Bud Norris and rookie setup man Jordan Hicks.

It was the rise of the 2016 World Series champion Cubs, who have won the Central in each of the last two years, that put Matheny's future in doubt with many St. Louis fans. The Cardinals finished 17 + games back of Chicago in 2016 and nine games back of Chicago in third place a year ago - due in large part of St. Louis' 4-15 record against its rival to the north. Matheny's in-game moves were also routinely criticized by advocates of advanced analytics.

Matheny agreed to a three-year contract extension after the 2016 season to keep him with St. Louis through the 2020 season.

Since DeWitt Jr. bought the team in 2005, Matheny was one of only two managers for the Cardinals - along with Tony La Russa.

The 47-year-old Matheny won three of his four Gold Gloves with St. Louis and was part of three postseason efforts, including a World Series. He became a team leader playing for La Russa, who retired just days after leading the team to his second World Series title in 2011. Matheny was announced as La Russa's replacement later that month.
