        • Gregorius powers Yankees past Nationals 3-0
          June 12, 2018

DETROIT (AP) Miguel Cabrera ruptured his left biceps tendon Tuesday night, an injury that will sideline the slugger for the rest of the season, and the Detroit Tigers lost 6-4 to the Minnesota Twins.

The two-time AL MVP will have surgery this week, the Tigers said. Cabrera, playing his 12th game since missing 26 with a hamstring strain, exited in the third inning and underwent an MRI during the game.

Ehire Adrianza hit his first career grand slam to help Minnesota rally. Ryan Pressly (1-1) got three outs for the win, and Fernando Rodney pitched the ninth for his 14th save.

Louis Coleman (3-1) was charged with the loss.

          ASTROS 6, ATHLETICS 3

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Evan Gattis hit a three-run homer and drove in five runs, Carlos Correa returned from a four-game absence and homered on the first pitch he saw, and the Astros earned their sixth straight win.

Lance McCullers Jr. (8-3) pitched seven innings of two-run ball. Ken Giles got three outs for his 11th save in 11 tries.

Correa was back in the lineup at shortstop after missing a series sweep at Texas with soreness in his right side.

Oakland's Daniel Mengden (6-6) was charged with six runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.

          YANKEES 3, NATIONALS 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Didi Gregorius homered twice for New York, Washington slugger Bryce Harper left in the eighth inning after he was hit by a pitch for the second time, and the Yankees earned their 10th win in 12 games.

Harper fell to the ground in pain when hit on the right elbow by a 90 mph pitch from CC Sabathia (4-1) in the fifth inning. The 2015 NL MVP came out after he was hit on the left foot by Dellin Betances' 89 mph slider leading off the eighth.

Gregorius drove a hanging curveball from Tanner Roark (3-7) into the Yankees bullpen in right-center during New York's two-run second. He sent a fastball into the right-field second deck leading off the sixth for his fourth multihomer game.

Sabathia allowed four hits in 5 2/3 innings. Aroldis Chapman pitched a perfect ninth for his 18th save.

          BREWERS 4, CUBS 0

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Chase Anderson pitched seven innings of one-hit ball, and the Brewers moved back into first in the NL Central.

Anderson (5-5) struck out six and walked two. The Brewers had been shut out in Anderson's three most recent starts against Chicago.

Travis Shaw hit a pair of two-run doubles for Milwaukee, which had dropped seven in a row against Chicago.

Cubs right-hander Tyler Chatwood (3-5) worked five innings, yielding four runs, three earned, and five hits.

          RED SOX 6, ORIOLES 4

BALTIMORE (AP) - Home runs by Rafael Devers and Andrew Benintendi helped Eduardo Rodriguez win his fifth straight start, and Boston extended Baltimore's losing streak to six games.

Rodriguez (8-1) gave up two runs and eight hits over 5 2/3 innings to increase a career-best run of success that began on May 20 against the Orioles.

Joey Rickard homered for the Orioles, who own the worst record in the big leagues (19-47). David Hess (2-3) stumbled in his sixth big league start, allowing five runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Baltimore reliever Zach Britton made his season debut, six months after undergoing surgery for a ruptured right Achilles tendon. The lefty pitched a scoreless seventh.

          WHITE SOX 5, INDIANS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Yoan Moncada and Yolmer Sanchez homered to lead off Chicago's three-run first, and James Shields won for the first time since opening day.

Shields (2-7) gave up one run and four hits in seven innings after going 12 starts and 13 appearances without a win. Joakim Soria got one out for his ninth save.

Moncada and Sanchez connected on consecutive pitches from Adam Plutko (3-1), helping the White Sox beat the AL Central leaders after losing their first four meetings this season.

Cleveland had won five of six.

          PHILLIES 5, ROCKIES 4

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Aaron Nola struck out 10 in another dominant performance and Scott Kingery hit a three-run homer, leading Philadelphia to the win.

Nola (8-2) allowed one run and four hits in 6 2/3 innings, lowering his ERA to 2.27. Seranthony Dominguez escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the ninth for his third save.

Kingery drove a 1-2 pitch from Jon Gray (6-7) out to left-center to give the Phillies a 3-0 lead in the first. He added a sacrifice fly in the third.

The Phillies have won two in a row for the first time since a three-game winning streak May 13-17.

The Rockies have lost five straight and nine of 11.

          BRAVES 8, METS 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Ozzie Albies hit a grand slam and Freddie Freeman homered during Atlanta's six-run sixth inning.

Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz pitched five scoreless innings before departing with triceps tightness. Shane Carle (4-1) got two outs for the win.

Ender Inciarte added a pair of RBI singles to help Atlanta shake a rough West Coast trip, when it lost four of six. The Braves moved ahead of Washington for first in the NL East by beating a Mets team that has lost nine of 10 and 16 of 20.

New York's Zack Wheeler (2-5) was charged with six runs in 5 2/3 innings.

          RAYS 4, BLUE JAYS 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Wilson Ramos homered, and six Tampa Bay relievers combined for a five-hitter.

With right-handers Chris Archer and Jake Faria on the disabled list, Tampa Bay is using relievers to start three times through the rotation. Austin Pruitt (2-3) pitched 2 2/3 innings for the win, and Sergio Romo worked the ninth for his second save.

Ramos put the Rays up 2-0 with his two-run drive off Jaime Garcia (2-5) in the third.

          MARLINS 3, GIANTS 1

MIAMI (AP) - Trevor Richards pitched six effective innings for his first major league win, helping the Marlins top the Giants.

Richards (1-3) allowed two hits in his seventh major league start. The 25-year-old right-hander struck out two and walked three.

Brandon Crawford's groundout in the first inning drove in the only run for the Giants, who had just three hits.

Kyle Barraclough pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save in six chances.

JT Riddle had a two-run double for Miami, and Starlin Castro had two hits and knocked in a run.

          PADRES 4, CARDINALS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Eric Hosmer homered for San Diego, and the Padres carried a perfect game into the sixth inning of their 10th win in 14 games.

Matt Strahm started the bullpen game and retired nine batters on 36 pitches, including four strikeouts. It was the team's third bullpen start this season while left-hander Joey Lucchesi recovers from a right hip strain.

Adam Cimber (3-2) retired the next six with two strikeouts before Harrison Bader broke up the perfect game with an infield single in the sixth. Brad Hand pitched the ninth for his 20th save.

Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas (7-2) allowed three runs and six hits in six innings.

          REDS 5, ROYALS 1, 10 INNINGS

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Joey Votto hit a bases-loaded triple for Cincinnati in the 10th inning after Billy Hamilton slipped out of a rundown.

Hamilton got hung up between third and home when Kevin McCarthy (4-3) tipped Tyler Barnhart's line drive with his glove. McCarthy picked up the ball behind the mound and threw home, and Hamilton looked done until he sidestepped Alcides Escobar's tag and dived back safely into third base to leave the bases loaded with one out.

Votto then tripled to the right-center wall, and Eugenio Suarez singled home Votto.

David Hernandez (2-0) worked an inning for the win.

            Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……..

            13) The NBA wanted an “integrity fee” from states with legalized sports betting across the country, but when Lebron James had a broken hand in the NBA Finals and the Cavaliers/NBA kept it under wraps, where was the bleeping “integrity” then?

Every state with legalized sports betting should hire people from Las Vegas to run their legalized gambling; thats the best way to assure that things will be the run the correct way.

            12) Orioles’ DH Chris Davis is hitting .150 thru 57 games this season; Baltimore is on the hook for Davis— $21M a year thru 2022. From 2013-16, Davis hit 164 homers. Now? Not so much.

            11) Andrew Luck threw a football at Colts’ mini-camp Tuesday, first time in over 500 days he threw a football after his shoulder injury. Good news for Indianapolis.

Deshaun Watson is practicing at Houston’s mini-camp with no knee brace. Watson threw for 19 TD’s with only 8 INT’s in seven games (6 starts) LY, before he hurt his knee. Texans were 3-3 in his starts.

            10) Pretty cool pic on Twitter last night of Vegas Golden Knights’ goalie Marc Andre Fleury playing street hockey with kids in his Las Vegas neighborhood. Imagine being a little kid and going outside to play ball with a pro athlete?

            9) Sounds like the NHL’s Ottawa Senators have some problems; the wife of one Senators’ player filed a restraining order against the fiancé of another Senators player.

According to the Ottawa Citizen, “…..the order of protection filed by one player’s wife alleges that the longtime girlfriend of another Ottawa player is behind an extensive and aggressive campaign of harassment against them since at least November of 2017. “

How would you like to be coaching a team where two of your better players’ wife/girlfriend hate each other’s guts?

            8) Dodgers put P Walker Buehler on the DL with a microfracture in his ribs.

A’s put P Trevor Cahill (achilles) on the DL.

Miguel Cabrera left the Tigers’ game early Tuesday with a ruptured left bicep tendon that will require surgery- he is out for the year.

            7) Ken Pomeroy posted that Nevada Wolf Pack called only 0.70 timeouts per game (not counting OT periods) last year; no one else in the country averaged less than 1.13 TO’s per game.

            6) Quote of the Day, part 2: “Having worked at 7 different universities, I can tell you changing AD’s is like the starter’s pistol for exit of coaches.”
Bob Valvano, who was a pretty good college hoop coach himself

            5) Oakland Raiders released QB Christian Hackenberg from its 90-man roster Tuesday, three weeks after getting him from the Jets for a conditional 7th-round draft pick in 2019.

If I were a friend of Hackenberg’s, I’d suggest he play in the Arena League- think it helps develop a QB’s decision-making.

            4) Ravens’ coach John Harbaugh has mentioned “playing two QB’s at once” when Baltimore has the ball this season, which may be a veiled way of suggesting Lamar Jackson will play some WR while not actually saying he will be playing WR, since Jackson sees himself as a QB only.

            3) Mets’ TV guy Ron Darling was frustrated when Zack Wheeler gave up a hit on an 0-2 pitch that allowed the Braves to score a run; Darling hinted that pitchers are hesitant to waste pitches nowadays because it goes against their pitch count, shortens their appearances.

“No way should a batter get anything good to hit on an 0-2 pitch.”

            2) Ashton Grewal of *********** points out that since 2006, CFL underdogs are 115-66-2 against the spread (63.5%) in the first four weeks of the season.

            • Mets & deGrom try for rare win
              June 13, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:

              CABRERA DONE

Miguel Cabrera's season is over, leaving Detroit without its biggest star during a season when there wasn't much else for Tigers fans to latch onto. Cabrera ruptured his left biceps tendon on a swing Tuesday night, ending the two-time MVP's year just a couple of weeks after he returned from a DL stint due to a right hamstring strain. The 35-year-old Cabrera batted .301 with an .848 OPS, three homers and 22 RBIs for a team that wasn't expected to compete in the AL Central.

              JAKE-BITTEN

The Mets try to snap a most puzzling skid when Jacob deGrom pitches against Atlanta. DeGrom has a 1.24 ERA in his past four starts, and yet New York has lost each of those outings. Only the Marlins and Reds have worse records in the NL than the Mets, and general manager Sandy Alderson is shouldering the blame. ''When you're scoring runs at the anemic rate that we have, something hasn't worked. So from that standpoint, I take full responsibility for where we are,'' he said Tuesday. As the All-Star Game next month and the July 31 trade deadline approach, Alderson acknowledged he would consider retooling if the Mets' record doesn't improve.

              GERRIT GOING OFF

Gerrit Cole aims to keep up his stellar season when Houston faces Oakland. Cole (7-1, 2.16 ERA) has won five straight decisions and entered Tuesday leading the AL with 124 strikeouts. He has yet to allow more than three earned runs in a start this season. Paul Blackburn (1-0, 1.50) is up for the A's following a terrific season debut last week against Kansas City.

              MAEDA IT BACK

Kenta Maeda is set to return for the Dodgers against Texas, though most of his usual rotation-mates are still on the disabled list. Maeda has been out with a hip injury since May 29, and he'll come off the DL a day after rookie right-hander Walker Buehler was added to the list. Buehler, Clayton Kershaw, Rich Hill, Hyun-Jin Ryu and Dennis Santana remain on the DL for the Dodgers.

                      • Wednesday's Diamond Notes
                        Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Diamondbacks (11-3 last 14)

After living in the “coldest team” category for most of May, Arizona has vaulted to the “hot” category in June. The D-backs’ offense has been the reason for this recent surge by scoring 51 runs in the last five victories, including 22 in the first two wins in their series against the Pirates. Arizona jumped out to a 6-0 lead over Pittsburgh in the first inning of Wednesday’s 13-8 triumph, while improving to 7-1 in the past eight games at Chase Field.

Zack Greinke takes the ball this afternoon as Arizona seeks the home sweep. Greinke continues to be dominant at Chase Field this season by posting a 3-0 record to go along with a 1.64 ERA at home, while the D-backs own 5-2 record in his home outings. Arizona can build upon its three-game advantage of Los Angeles in the NL West this weekend as the D-backs welcome in the struggling Mets.

Coldest team: Rockies (2-9 last 11)

It wasn’t long ago the Colorado sat atop the NL West race, but the Rockies have slipped of late by losing five straight games. The Rockies’ pitching has caused this descent after getting swept at home by both the Dodgers and Diamondbacks this month, while allowing double-digit runs four times. Colorado fell behind Philadelphia on Tuesday, 5-1 prior to rallying late in a 5-4 loss to the Phillies.

The Rockies send out Tyler Anderson to the mound tonight as the left-hander is winless in his last four starts. Anderson is coming off a quality outing in his previous start at Cincinnati by scattering five hits and allowing two earned runs in seven innings of an extra-innings walk-off loss. The last time Anderson faced Arizona in late March, he was tagged for a season-high seven runs in 2.1 innings of a 9-8 loss, but the Rockies have won his last two starts as a heavy underdog against the Cubs and Nationals.

Hottest pitcher: Jose Berrios, Twins (7-5, 3.66 ERA)

Berrios has rebounded since a rough first five weeks of the season as Minnesota has won four of his past five starts. The right-hander has yielded two earned runs or less in four of his previous five outings, while coming off a complete-game victory against the White Sox in his last trip to the mound. Granted, Minnesota’s last four wins that Berrios has taken the ball have all come at Target Field, as he faces the Tigers at Comerica Park tonight. Berrios shut down the Tigers the last time he saw them on May 21 in a 4-2 home victory by giving up three hits in eight innings and striking out nine batters.

Coldest pitcher: Nick Pivetta, Phillies (4-5, 3.76 ERA)

Pivetta was rolling along in May by winning three straight starts, while striking out 25 batters in this stretch. However, Pivetta has gone backwards of late by failing to win in his last three trips to the mound, including road losses to the Cubs and Giants. The right-hander hasn’t lasted past the fifth inning in any of these three starts, while the Phillies’ offense hasn’t provided much run support by scoring three runs or less in Pivetta’s past four outings. Pivetta will try to turn things around against the Rockies, who enter Wednesday’s action owning a 3-6 record in their last nine road games.

Biggest OVER run: Dodgers (9-1 last 10)

Since dropping six straight games to the Reds and Marlins in May, the Dodgers have picked things up and starting to look like the defending National League champions. Los Angeles is riding an 18-6 run over the last 24 games, while scoring at least five runs in each of its past 11 victories. The Dodgers crushed the Rangers on Tuesday, 12-5, marking the eighth time in 10 June games that Los Angeles has plated at least seven runs. Kenta Maeda takes the mound for the Dodgers tonight as he lasted less than two innings in a 6-1 loss to the Phillies his last time out. Maeda has seen the UNDER hit in five of his past seven starts, while the UNDER is 4-1-1 in his six home outings this season.

Biggest UNDER run: White Sox (10-1 last 11)

Chicago has showed some competitive juices of late by capturing two of three as heavy underdogs at Boston last weekend, while splitting the first two games against Cleveland. The White Sox went deep twice in the first inning of Tuesday’s 5-1 rout of the Indians, as Chicago has allowed four runs or less in nine of the past 10 games. Narrowing that number down in this stretch, Sox pitching has yielded two runs or fewer five times, but Chicago’s inconsistent offense has scored two runs or less five times in the last 10 contests. Dylan Covey has been solid of late for Chicago by allowing one run in his last two starts, while the Sox beat the Red Sox and Brewers in the underdog role.

Matchup to watch: Nationals vs. Yankees

Washington and New York are two teams that may see each other in October for the Fall Classic, as the two teams are hooking up in interleague action this season. However, the first matchup in D.C. back in May was suspended in the sixth inning due to massive rain, while the second game was washed out the following night. The first official matchup between these heavyweights took place in the Bronx on Tuesday as the Yankees blanked the Nationals, 3-0, highlighted by a pair of home runs from shortstop Didi Gregorious.

The Yankees are facing their third straight tough opponent at home after capturing series victories in late May against the Angels and Astros. Sonny Gray has been on fire of late for New York as the right-hander has allowed one earned run and six hits in his last two starts against the Orioles and Blue Jays on the road. The Yankees won each of those games, but Gray has been tagged for 10 runs in his last two home outings, losses to the Angels and Athletics.

The Nationals have been blanked in consecutive games, while right fielder Bryce Harper was plunked twice in last night’s loss. Harper looks to play tonight as Washington sends out right-hander Erick Fedde to the mound trying to slow down the Yankees. Fedde makes his second start of the season, as he lost to the Padres as a -145 home favorite last month, 3-1 in spite of striking out six batters in 5.2 innings of work.

                        Betcha didn’t know:
It’s a special night for Giants’ left-hander Andrew Suarez, who makes his first start in his hometown of Miami in his short career. Suarez, who attended high school in Miami and pitched at the University of Miami, is seeking his third win of the season. The Giants have lost the first two games of their series with the Marlins, but San Francisco has won each of Suarez’s last two starts against Washington and Philadelphia.

                        Biggest public favorite:
                        Cardinals (-200) vs. Padres

                        Biggest public underdog:
                        Royals (+105) vs. Reds

                        Biggest line move:
Indians (-173 to -180) at White Sox

Two of the top teams in the league wrap up a quick two-game series on Wednesday night on ESPN, as the Washington Nationals visit the New York Yankees. The Nationals are battling with Atlanta for first place in the NL East, while the Yankees are fighting with Boston for first in the AL East. The probable pitching matchup for Wednesday has Erick Fedde taking on Sonny Gray. Let’s look at the contest and MLB picks.

Washington Nationals vs. New York Yankees
Date and Time: Wednesday, June 13, 2018, 7:05 p.m. ET
Location: Yankee Stadium, New York, NY
                            MLB Odds: Yankees -210, O/U 9.5
Probable Pitchers: Erick Fedde vs. Sonny Gray
Nationals vs. Yankees TV Coverage: ESPN

The Nationals have been far better on the road this season than on the road. They are just 15-16 at home, but they were 21-11 in their first 32 road games. They went under in 20 of those games, over just 10 times, with two pushes. They are scoring 4.3 runs per game and giving up 3.3 per contest. Washington got a scare on Tuesday when Bryce Harper was hit by a couple of pitches, but Harper is fine and expected to play on Wednesday.

The Yankees have been very good at home and on the road. They were 22-9 in their first 31 home games, with 19 going over, 11 going under, with one push. They are scoring 5.4 runs per game to lead the league and they are 8th in team ERA at just over 3.5 runs allowed per game.

                            Starting Pitchers

The Nationals are expected to call up Erick Fedde for this spot start on Wednesday. Washington was going with a four-man rotation but when Stephen Strasburg went on the DL they had to make a move. Fedde already has a spot on the 40-man roster, and he has one start this season, so he is the logical choice to get this start. He has a 4.76 ERA in 56.2 innings this season with Triple-A Syracuse. His only start this season came against the Padres in late May and he allowed three runs on six hits in 5.2 innings.

Gray is 4-4 with a 4.81 ERA. He pitched really well last time out against Toronto breaking a stretch of one good game and then one bad game. He held the Blue Jays scoreless for eight innings. He is 1-1 with a 3.06 ERA in his last three starts. Gray has quality starts in three of his last four starts.

                            Key Stats

The Nationals are 20-6 in their last 26 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Nationals are 13-4 in their last 17 vs. a team with a winning record. The Yankees are 7-2 in their last 9 vs. the National League East. The Yankees are 36-16 in their last 52 vs. a team with a winning record.

Looking at the total, the Under is 13-3 in the Nationals last 16 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Under is 37-14-6 in the Nationals last 57 road games. The Over is 8-1 in Gray’s last 9 home starts. The Under is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in New York.

                            Nationals vs. Yankees Picks

The value in this game is definitely on the Nationals, but how can you trust Fedde? He hasn’t been anything special in Triple-A and he wasn’t that great in his one start against a weak hitting San Diego team. He gets a far tougher test in this one against a New York team that is pounding the ball. The Yankees would be the choice except that it is hard to trust Gray. He has pitched better in his last two starts, but I need to see more to be able to trust him. The Nationals have been very good on the road and they should find a way to score some runs in this one. I think the best choice in this game is to play the total. The Yankees figure to score at least four or five runs against Fedde and then they get into the Washington bullpen, while the Nationals should be able to get to Gray for at least a few runs. I will go over the total on Wednesday night.

Nationals vs. Yankees Pick: Over the total
Nationals vs. Yankees Score Prediction: Yankees 6, Nationals 5
