  • Colon matches Marichal with 243rd victory as Rangers top A's
    June 6, 2018

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Bartolo Colon worked five innings for his 243rd career victory, matching Hall of Fame pitcher Juan Marichal for the most by a player born in the Dominican Republic when the Texas Rangers beat the Oakland Athletics 8-2 on Wednesday night.

The 45-year-old Colon (3-3), in his fourth attempt at the milestone victory, got it against one of the 10 other major league teams he has pitched for since his big league debut in 1997 with Cleveland. He allowed Khris Davis' two-run homer and had one strikeout and two walks.

Colon leads active pitchers with 243 wins and 3,383 2/3 innings pitched. His 2,499 strikeouts are third among active pitchers, behind CC Sabathia and Justin Verlander. Nicaragua's Dennis Martinez, with 245 wins, is the only Latin American native with more victories than Colon.

Jurickson Profar homered twice and had a career-high five RBIs, while Joey Gallo and Ronald Guzman also went deep for the Rangers in the first four innings against Daniel Mengden (6-5).

    YANKEES 3, BLUE JAYS 0, 13 INNINGS

TORONTO (AP) - Aaron Judge hit a two-run homer to snap a scoreless tie in the 13th inning, Giancarlo Stanton went deep moments later and New York blanked Toronto for a two-game sweep.

Yankees starter Sonny Gray allowed two hits in eight sparkling innings. Judge ended an 0-for-15 slump by connecting off Joe Biagini (0-5) for his team-leading 17th home run. Stanton added a laser shot to left field, his 14th, as New York won for the seventh time in eight games.

David Robertson (4-2) worked one inning and Aroldis Chapman finished for his 15th save in 16 opportunities.

Judge returned to the lineup after sitting out Tuesday. He went 0 for 9 with a record eight strikeouts in Monday's doubleheader at Detroit.

The Yankees are the only major league team that hasn't been shut out this season.

    RED SOX 7, TIGERS 1

BOSTON (AP) - Andrew Benintendi and Christian Vazquez each hit a solo homer and had an RBI double to back a strong start by Eduardo Rodriguez, carrying the Red Sox over the Detroit Tigers.

Xander Bogaerts added a two-run double during a four-run third inning for the Red Sox, who won their fourth straight game and improved their major league-best record to 43-19.

Miguel Cabrera and JaCoby Jones each had two hits for Detroit, which has lost four of five. The Tigers have dropped 13 of their last 17 on the road.

Rodriguez (7-1) gave up one run on five hits in 5 2/3 innings with five strikeouts and one walk, improving to 4-1 in his last five starts with a 2.14 ERA. The Red Sox are 11-1 in his starts this season. Trailing 1-0, Boston took charge with its four-run inning against Blaine Hardy (2-1).

    NATIONALS 11, RAYS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Anthony Rendon had four hits and drove in three runs, Tanner Roark pitched six innings and the Nationals routed the Tampa Bay Rays to sweep the two-game series.

Michael A. Taylor had three hits and three RBIs, while Trea Turner and Juan Soto had two hits each for Washington, which has won 11 of its last 15 games. Roark (3-6, 3.56 ERA) allowed two runs on six hits.

C.J. Cron hit his 13th homer and Brad Miller had three hits for the Rays, who have lost six straight and have scored six runs in their last four.

The Nationals reached starter Jonny Venters (1-1) for five runs in the first inning. A reliever being used to ''open'' the game - something the Rays have done eight times in their last 17 games - Venters was starting his first game in his 245 appearances. He lasted only six batters.

    ORIOLES 1, METS 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Manny Machado had a sacrifice fly, Dylan Bundy was stellar over seven scoreless innings and the major league-worst Baltimore Orioles beat the Mets to sweep a two-game interleague series.

Bundy (4-7), who held the Mets to three hits while striking out five and walking three, was sharp through most of the afternoon. Richard Bleier followed Bundy with a scoreless eighth, and Brad Brach picked up his 10th save of the season by retiring three straight batters in the ninth after putting the potential game-tying run at first.

The Orioles, who had lost their previous seven games before arriving in New York, didn't fare well against Mets starter Zach Wheeler, who allowed three hits and had five strikeouts with a walk in seven innings. But Baltimore was able to take the lead against New York closer Jeurys Familia (2-3) in the eighth inning.

    INDIANS 3, BREWERS 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Carlos Carrasco struck out 10 and allowed one run in seven innings, and the Indians defeated the Milwaukee Brewers.

Carrasco (7-4) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the second and threw inning-ending double play balls in the fifth and seventh. The right-hander pumped his fist after Lorenzo Cain bounced into a double play on his 109th and final pitch. Cody Allen got the final four outs for his 11th save and the Indians took both games of the brief series. Chase Anderson (4-5) allowed three runs in 4 1/3 innings. The Brewers have lost three straight for the first time since April 26-29, when they dropped four in a row. Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell was ejected by plate umpire Quinn Wolcott after Shaw was called out on strikes in the eighth.

    PADRES 3, BRAVES 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Matt Strahm and four relievers combined on a four-hitter and the Padres beat Atlanta to take two of three from the Braves.

Strahm went 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run and two hits while striking out two and walking one. He gave up Freddie Freeman's home run with two outs in the first. Rookie Jose Castillo (1-0) allowed one hit and struck out two in 1 2/3 innings. Adam Cimber struck out the side in the fifth. Kirby Yates walked two in two hitless innings.

Closer Brad Hand came on for the eighth and allowed a leadoff double to Ozzie Albies before striking out Dansby Swanson, Freeman and Nick Markakis. Hand then retired the side in the ninth for his 18th save.

Mike Foltynewicz (5-4) took the loss.

    ROCKIES 6, REDS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Ian Desmond hit a two-run homer, and Gerardo Parra and Tony Wolters each drove in a pair of runs as the bottom of Colorado's batting order powered the Rockies past the Reds.

Colorado arrived in town with a season-high four straight losses, all set up by blown leads. Jon Gray (6-6) went five innings and showed signs of emerging from his recent struggles. The bullpen held on to give the Rockies their second consecutive win in the series.

Cincinnati's Scooter Gennett drove in a pair of runs with a double and a sacrifice fly on the one-year anniversary of his four-homer game against St. Louis.

Desmond connected off Sal Romano (3-7). Wade Davis got his NL-leading 20th save in 22 chances.

The Reds fell to 21-41 overall. They've matched the 1950 team for second-worst start in franchise history.

    GIANTS 5, DIAMONDBACKS 4, 10 INNINGS

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Pinch-hitter Alen Hanson had a tying, two-run homer off Brad Boxberger with two outs in the ninth inning, Brandon Crawford singled home Andrew McCutchen in the 10th and the Giants beat the Arizona Diamondbacks for their sixth win in seven games.

Boxberger blew a save for the second time in 16 chances. Arizona had been 29-0 when leading after eight innings.

McCutchen doubled off Andrew Chafin (0-2) with two outs in the 10th, a catchable drive that Jarrod Dyson misjudged and allowed to drop behind him on the warning track in center field. Crawford worked the count full and grounded a single between first and second, into right field, as McCutchen scored standing up.

Hunter Strickland (3-2) got out of a two-on jam in the 10th, striking out Ketel Marte, then retiring Nick Ahmed on a popout with runners at the corners.

    PIRATES 11, DODGERS 9

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Josh Harrison went 2 for 3 with a bases-clearing double, David Freese and Gregory Polanco drove in two runs each and the Pirates broke out of an extended offensive funk by outlasting the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Pirates entered the game coming off consecutive shutout losses, but wasted little time getting to Los Angeles rookie starter Caleb Ferguson and seven relievers, including former Pittsburgh reliever Daniel Hudson (1-2).

Corey Dickerson had three of Pittsburgh's 10 hits and scored four times as the Pirates won for just the fifth time in 18 games to avoid dropping below .500 for the first time all season.

Steven Brault (5-1) picked up the victory in relief of ineffective starter Trevor Williams, who lasted just three innings. Felipe Vazquez worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the ninth for his 11th save.

Matt Kemp hit his 10th home run of the season and drove in five runs for the Dodgers, who saw their four-game winning streak come to an abrupt halt. Cody Bellinger added his 10th home run and second in as many nights.

    MARLINS 11, CARDINALS 3

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Derek Dietrich homered and had four hits to lead the Miami Marlins past the Cardinals.

Lewis Brinson launched two solo homers for Miami, the second multihomer game of his career. The Marlins won their second straight, after snapping a six-game losing streak Tuesday.

Miami starter Wei-Yin Chen needed 91 pitches to get through 4 1/3 innings, failing to last at least five for the sixth time. Drew Ruchinski (1-0) gave up one run in 2 1/3 innings of relief for his first major league win.

Cardinals starter Jack Flaherty (2-2) lasted five innings for the second consecutive start. St. Louis infielder Jedd Gyorko finished the game on the mound, the first time the six-year veteran had pitched in the majors. Gyorko gave up a run, two hits and hit a batter with a pitch.

Before the third inning, the Cardinals announced that Hall of Fame second baseman Red Schoendienst died Wednesday. He was 95.

    WHITE SOX 5, TWINS 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Tim Anderson had two hits and drove in two runs and Hector Santiago earned the victory against his former team as the Chicago White Sox beat the Twins.

Santiago (2-2), who pitched for Minnesota the past two seasons, allowed just two runs on six hits in five innings pitched. And after giving up five home runs combined in his last two starts, the left-hander was able to keep the ball in the park against Minnesota.

Four relievers combined to shut down the Twins the rest of the way. Joakim Soria pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his sixth save.

Twins starter Jake Odorizzi (3-3) labored through five innings before he was knocked out after giving up two hits to start the sixth. He left with a 2-1 lead but took the loss when both runners came around to score.

    CUBS 7, PHILLIES 5

CHICAGO (AP) - Jason Heyward hit a game-ending grand slam off Adam Morgan with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Cubs a victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Heyward's drive against Morgan (0-2) sent the Cubs to their eighth win in 10 games, and it came after Philadelphia's Dylan Cozens hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer against Brandon Morrow in the top half.

Cory Mazzoni (1-0) got two outs in the ninth. Anthony Rizzo homered against Aaron Nola.

Philadelphia's Aaron Altherr greeted Steve Cishek with a tying, three-run homer in the sixth after Jose Quintana dominated for Chicago, but the Phillies lost for the fourth time in five games.

    ASTROS 7, MARINERS 5

HOUSTON (AP) - Evan Gattis hit a two-run homer early and Yuli Gurriel added a two-RBI single in a four-run seventh inning that lifted the Astros over the Seattle Mariners.

The victory ends a three-game skid for Houston and snaps a five-game winning streak by the Mariners. The Astros led 3-1 after four, but had fallen behind 4-3 entering the seventh after the Mariners got a run in sixth and tacked on two more in the seventh.

Chris Devenski (2-1) earned the win in relief of starter Lance McCullers Jr.

Juan Nicasio (1-3) took the loss. Nelson Cruz, Denard Span and Kyle Seager all homered for the Mariners, who still have a one-game lead over the Astros atop the American League West standings.

Thursday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

        13) Can’t be lot of fun for these major league managers of losing teams when they face the media day after day when they’re losing most of their games. Watching Mickey Callaway of the Mets, who is a rookie manager— you try to stay as positive as possible in your press conferences, but losing sucks- Mets have scored two runs in their last 42 innings.

        12) NBA teams that fall behind 2-0 in playoff series have won only 20 of those 301 series.

Lebron James’ teams have fallen behind 2-0 in seven series, but won three of them.

        11) List of pitchers who struck out the side on nine pitches more than once in their career: Lefty Grove, Sandy Koufax, Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson, Max Scherzer.

Scherzer is obviously still active; the other four are all in the Hall of Fame.

        10) During OTA’s this week, new Chicago Bears’ coach Matt Nagy showed his team the JR Smith brain cramp from Game 1 of the NBA Finals as a teaching moment for the importance of proper clock management.

        9) Sounds like Michigan basketball coach John Beilein netted himself roughly a $500K annual raise from the Wolverines after his flirtation with the NBA’s Detroit Pistons.

        8) On the first day of legal sports betting in Delaware, $322,135 was wagered. The governor of Delaware made the first bet, putting $10 on the Phillies (+$190) to win, and they did win.

        7) US Open golf tournament is next week on Long Island; Eldrick Woods will be staying on his 155-foot, $20 million yacht that is docked at the Montauk Yacht Club. Shinnecock CC where the Open will be held is in the town of Southampton, about an hour from the yacht club.

        6) With the US Open next week, there are only nine players out of the world’s top 50 in the Memphis Open this week,

        5) In 46 career games vs Texas, A’s OF Khris Davis has 47 RBI.

        4) JD Martinez hit his 20th home run Tuesday; last year, the first Boston player to reach 20 home runs did so on August 29.

        3) Cardinals pitching prospect Alex Reyes will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery to re-attach a tendon in his lat.

Angels’ SS Andrelton Simmons goes on the DL with an ankle injury.

Diamondbacks acquired OF Jon Jay from the Royals in exchange for pitchers Gabe Speier, Elvis Luciano.

        2) John Calipari’s in-laws have been married for 65 years. Wow, good for them.

        1) Reds lost 9-6 Tuesday, despite getting 17 hits; it was the first time they got 17 hits in a 9-inning game and lost since September, 1984 against San Diego.

        • Fans using cell phones cause brief delay at Fenway
          June 6, 2018

BOSTON (AP) Fans using their cell phone lights caused a brief delay when the Detroit Tigers were batting in the seventh inning at Fenway Park Wednesday night.

It started to grow with one out in the seventh of Boston's 7-1 win and circled the stands when Detroit's Niko Goodrum took a called third strike from pitcher Matt Barnes.

Before Nicholas Castellanos stepped to the plate, he chatted with plate umpire Mike DiMuro. Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire also came out to talk with DiMuro, who walked over to Boston's dugout.

''You ever tried to hit with a light like that in your face? It's not supposed to happen,'' Gardenhire said. ''The umpires should have, in my opinion, stopped it right away. They see it happen - it's right in dead center field.

''The fans are just having fun. I get it. But when it's in dead center field, my hitters are looking right into it. It's dangerous. It's very dangerous, if you've ever been trying to hit with a light in your face. So, we just couldn't let that happen.''

Red Sox security asked fans in the center-field bleachers to stop using the phones as flash lights, and play resumed.

          Castellanos then singled to center.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora joked that ''that's a good weapon.''

Cora said the umpires asked him if they could find a way to make it stop, but security had taken care of the problem.

Says Boston center fielder Andrew Benintendi: ''It was kind of cool.''

Arizona gets Jon Jay from Royals for 2 minor league pitchers
          June 6, 2018

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired outfielder Jon Jay in a trade with the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday in exchange for two minor league pitchers.

With two outfielders on the DL, the 33-year-old Jay gives Arizona an experienced outfielder they desperately need.

A.J. Pollock is out with a fractured thumb, and Steven Souza Jr., with a right pectoral strain.

Jay is a career .290 hitter who's in his ninth year in the majors. He signed a one-year free agent contract with the Royals on March 6 of this year. He was batting .307 with nine doubles, two triples, a homer and 28 runs scored with Kansas City this season.

Jay came up with the Cardinals and was on their 2011 World Series championship team. The Diamondbacks will be his fifth team.

Arizona sent Elvis Luciano and Gabe Speier to Kansas City. Luciano, 18, is a right-hander from Boca Chica in the Dominican Republic.

Speier is a 23-year-old left-hander who's in his sixth year in pro ball. Luciano will report to the Rookie League Burlington Royals, and Speier to Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

                  • Beeks makes big debut in Boston
                    June 7, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                    SAME NAME GAME

Cole Hamels (3-5) pitches for Texas against Gerrit Cole and the visiting Astros in the opener of a four-game series. Hamels, with a 2.89 ERA in his last seven starts, threw six shutout innings vs. Houston on May 11. Cole (6-1, 2.20 ERA), who leads the AL with 116 strikeouts, has a four-game winning streak. The defending World Series champions are hoping for positive news on star shortstop Carlos Correa, who will be re-evaluated after leaving Wednesday's game. Correa experienced discomfort on his right side when he swung the bat in the seventh inning.

                    BIG MOMENT IN BOSTON

Jalen Beeks makes his major league debut for the Red Sox (43-19) when baseball's top team, looking for its fifth straight victory, hosts Detroit. The 24-year-old lefty allowed two or fewer runs in eight of his 10 starts for Triple-A Pawtucket. He said he expects his wife, two kids and ''I'm guessing like 15 others'' to be in the stands. Before the game, Boston star Mookie Betts (10-day disabled list, left abdominal strain) plans to take batting practice and second baseman Dustin Pedroia (left knee inflammation) is expected to resume baseball activities.

                    INFIELD INJURIES

The Chicago Cubs haven't ruled out a trip to the disabled list for shortstop Addison Russell, who has a bruised left middle finger. Russell was out of the lineup for the second straight game Wednesday but ''felt better than he thought he would'' hitting in the cage, according to manager Joe Maddon. Meanwhile, the Angels put Gold Glove shortstop Andrelton Simmons on the 10-day DL because of a right ankle sprain sustained when he slipped going down the dugout steps before Tuesday's game. Third baseman Zack Cozart replaced Simmons at shortstop Wednesday, and Kaleb Cowart started at third after being recalled from Triple-A. Angels manager Mike Scioscia said there's no timeline yet for Simmons' return, but added ''it's certainly going to take a little bit of time'' to recover. Simmons was batting .330 with 34 RBIs.

                    ANOTHER YOUNG ARM

Dodgers rookie Dennis Santana makes his first major league start in the series finale at Pittsburgh. The 22-year-old Santana earned his first victory in the majors by working 3 2/3 innings of relief last week against Colorado. On the mound for the Pirates is Jameson Taillon, who pitched eight shutout innings against St. Louis last Friday.

                    SOMETHING'S GOT TO GIVE

White Sox right-hander James Shields (1-6) faces the Twins again after holding them hitless for 6 1/3 innings May 6 in Chicago. He's pitched at least seven innings in each of his last four starts. Minnesota turns to Jose Berrios (6-5), who is 2-0 against the White Sox this year. He struck out 11 Chicago batters over seven innings in a 4-0 win at Target Field on April 12.

                    • Thursday's Diamond Notes
                      June 7, 2018

Hottest team: Red Sox (9-3 last 12)

Boston dropped the first two games in a playoff rematch at Houston last weekend, but bounced back for victories in the final two contests to pick up the split. The Red Sox have continued that momentum by blowing out the Tigers in each of the first two games at Fenway Park by a combined score of 13-1, while easily cashing on the run-line each time as a heavy favorite.

Left-hander Jalen Beeks makes his Major League debut on Thursday as the Red Sox seek the sweep of Detroit. The former Arkansas Razorback leads the International League (AAA) in strikeouts with 80, while making the spot start in place of the injured Drew Pomeranz. The Red Sox have done an excellent job in closing out teams at home this season by posting an 8-1 record in series finales at Fenway Park.

Coldest team: Rays (0-6 last six)

It’s hard to find a team in baseball that has endured more ups and downs this season than Tampa Bay. The Rays began the season at 4-13, but went on to win nine of 10, then suffer a five-game skid, followed by a 7-1 run. Tampa Bay put together a five-game winning streak towards the end of May, but has yet to win a game in June by dropping six straight, including getting swept in series at Seattle and Washington.

The offense has mustered six runs in the past four games to drop to 28-32, as the Rays face the AL West-leading Mariners for four games at Tropicana Field. Manager Kevin Cash will revert back to his bullpen by committee to start the game philosophy as Ryne Stanek makes his third start of the season. Stanek has yet to last past the second inning, as the Rays look to end a three-game skid in home series openers.

Hottest pitcher: Mike Leake, Mariners (5-3, 4.71 ERA)

Seattle has won five consecutive starts made by the right-hander, while Leake has yielded five runs in his past three trips to the hill. Leake tossed seven innings in his last outing, a 4-3 victory over the Rays last Friday, while not walking a batter in any of his past three starts. The Mariners own a 4-1 record in Leake’s five starts away from Safeco Field this season, but the only loss came in the favorite role against the White Sox on April 23. Leake was tagged for a season-high eight runs in 3.1 innings of a 10-4 loss, but the veteran has earned a shade over eight units for backers this season, which ranks fourth in baseball.

Coldest pitcher: Tyler Anderson, Rockies (3-1, 5.07 ERA)

The Rockies have bounced back nicely after getting swept by the Dodgers at home this past weekend. Colorado looks to pull out the brooms on Cincinnati this afternoon after scoring 15 runs in the first two victories at Great American Ballpark. Anderson tries to get back on track after failing to win in each of his last three starts, which includes a 6-5 home loss to the Reds as a -170 favorite. The Colorado southpaw has allowed 13 earned runs in his last 16.1 innings of work, but the Rockies have managed a 5-2 record in his seven starts away from Coors Field.

Biggest OVER run: Astros (5-0 last five)

Houston snapped a three-game skid on Wednesday by outlasting Seattle, 7-5 to earn a split of its two-game series at Minute Maid Park. The normally reliable Astros’ pitching staff allowed at least five runs for the fourth straight game after giving up more than five runs only 11 times in the first 59 games. Houston’s offense put together a pair of huge innings on Wednesday by scoring three runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the seventh. The Astros make the short trip to Texas to face the Rangers, as Houston has averaged eight runs a game in its past six road series openers.

Biggest UNDER run: White Sox (5-0 last five)

Chicago and Minnesota have played to three straight UNDERS at Target Field, as the White Sox held off the Twins last night, 5-2. Chicago’s pitching staff has performed well in this series by allowing five runs in the last two wins, while not giving up a run until the eighth inning in Tuesday’s 4-2 defeat in the first game of a doubleheader. James Shields takes the mound in today’s series finale as the right-hander has cashed the UNDER in four consecutive starts, while allowing nine earned runs in this stretch.

Matchup to watch: Astros vs. Rangers

Houston and Texas meet up for the 11th time this season coming up tonight in Arlington. The Astros have captured six of the first 10 matchups, but the Rangers have won three of the past five meetings. Houston begins the night one game behind Seattle in the AL West after rallying past the Mariners on Wednesday, 7-5 as -180 favorites. Meanwhile, the Rangers are coming off a two-game home sweep of the Athletics, while plating 15 runs in the series.

Gerrit Cole heads to the mound in the series opener as the Astros own a 2-0 record against the Rangers when the right-hander makes the start. Cole has struck out 25 Rangers in two meetings, while giving up three runs in 14 innings of work. The Astros have won five of Cole’s six road starts this season, but the righty has given up three earned runs in three of his last four outings. Cole delivered double-digit strikeout performances in five of his first seven starts, but hasn’t struck out more than nine batters in any of his last five trips to the hill.

Cole Hamels counters for Texas, as the Rangers have won three of the southpaw’s last four starts. Hamels limited the Astros to one hit in six innings of work in a 1-0 road triumph as a +230 underdog on May 11, marking one of three ‘dog wins at +150 or higher over the last month. All three starts Hamels has made against Houston this season have finished UNDER the total, while each of the past four matchups between these division rivals have cashed the UNDER.

Betcha didn’t know: The Orioles love the Big Apple. For as bad as Baltimore has been this season (19-41), the O’s have compiled a 5-1 record against the Mets and Yankees on the road. However, the Orioles have posted a 4-22 record on the highway outside the Empire State, as Baltimore travels north of the border to face Toronto, who has lost seven of the past eight games.

Biggest public favorite: Twins (-210) vs. White Sox

Biggest public underdog: Orioles (+135) at Blue Jays

Biggest line move: Reds (+105 to -110) vs. Rockies

                        • Red Sox seek sweep of Tigers
                          June 7, 2018

Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Red Sox

One of the top prospects in the Boston Red Sox organization, Jalen Meeks will make his Major League debut on Thursday, as the Red Sox host the Detroit Tigers on ESPN.

Meeks was 3-3 at Triple-A Pawtucket with a 2.56 ERA. The Tigers are expected to send Matthew Boyd to the mound. The Red Sox will be solid home favorites even with a rookie on the mound, as the Tigers have one of the worst road records in the league this season. Let’s look at the contest and MLB picks.

Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Red Sox
Date and Time: Thursday, June 7, 2018, 7:10 p.m. ET
                          Location: Fenway Park, Boston, MA
MLB Odds: Red Sox -170, O/U 9.5 over
Probable Pitchers: Matthew Boyd vs. Jalen Beek
                          TV Coverage: ESPN

The Tigers have been one of the worst road teams in the league this season, as they were just 9-19 in their first 28 road games. Detroit went over just 10 times in those games, while going under 17 times, with one push. The Tigers are scoring about 4.3 runs per game and giving up about 4.3 per contest.

The Red Sox have been one of the top home teams in the league this season, as they were 21-8 in their first 29 home games. They went over 17 times, under 10 times, with two pushes in those games. They are scoring 5.3 runs per game and giving up 3.6 per contest.

                          Starting Pitchers

Boyd has pitched pretty well for Detroit this season, as he is 3-4 with a 3.23 ERA. He struggled a little bit last time out, as he gave up four runs in seven innings against Toronto but the offense bailed him out and he got a no-decision in a game the Tigers won 7-4. Boyd is 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in his last three starts.

Beeks will be making his MLB debut for Boston. He had a 2.56 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP with Triple-A Pawtucket. He allowed just four hits in seven innings in his last start. The only concern for Beeks has been his tendency to give up the gopher ball, as he has given up seven home runs in 10 starts. He is 32-26 in his minor league career with a 3.84 ERA.

                          Key Stats

The Tigers are 19-39 in the last 58 meetings in Boston. The Tigers are 11-26 in their last 37 vs. a team with a winning record. The Tigers are 15-38 in their last 53 road games. The Tigers are 1-8 in Boyd’s last 9 road starts. The Red Sox are 42-17 in their last 59 vs. a team with a losing record. The Red Sox are 3-7 in their last 10 home games vs. a left-handed starter.

Looking at the total, the Under is 7-3 in the Tigers last 10 vs. the American League East. The Under is 4-1 in Boyd’s last 5 road starts. The Over is 5-1 in the Red Sox last 6 games vs. a left-handed starter. The Under is 9-4-1 in the last 14 meetings in Boston. Another interesting trend on the total is on the umpire Jeremie Rehak, as the under is 7-1-1 in his last nine games behind home plate.

                          Tigers vs. Red Sox Picks

The Tigers have been decent at home but they have just been awful on the road. Boyd has actually been one of their better pitchers this season but Detroit rarely wins on the road with Boyd on the mound, as they are 1-9 in their last 10. We don’t really know what we are going to get with Beeks, but he sure won’t be any worse than Pomeranz was.

The price is high, but I like the Red Sox to get the home win. I also can’t ignore the strong trends on the total, as Detroit has been going under on the road, the series in Boston has been low scoring and we get an Under umpire. I will also play the game to go under the total.

Tigers vs. Red Sox Pick: Red Sox and Under the total

Tigers vs. Red Sox Score Prediction: Red Sox 5, Tigers 2

                            • Pederson, Bellinger go deep for Dodgers
                              June 7, 2018

PITTSBURGH (AP) Joc Pederson went deep twice, Cody Bellinger hit his third home run in as many games and the Los Angeles Dodgers used nine pitchers to hold off the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-7 on Thursday.

Pederson led off the game with a solo blast off Jameson Taillon (3-5) and added a two-run shot in the eighth off Michael Feliz for his second multi-home run game in a week. Bellinger finished 3 for 4, including a shot just over the wall in left field in the sixth to give the Dodgers a three-run advantage, and a stream of relievers made it stand as Los Angeles won for the 15th time in its last 20 games to move back to .500 (31-31).

Daniel Hudson made his first start since 2015, working only the first inning, after the Dodgers scratched rookie Dennis Santana from what would have been his first major league start. Santana experienced tightness in his right side during his pregame routine. Pedro Baez (3-3) picked up the win by getting six outs. Kenley Jansen worked around a pinch-hit homer by Francisco Cervelli in the ninth for his 15th save.

                              REDS 7, ROCKIES 5, 13 INNINGS

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jesse Winker hit a two-run homer in the 13th, completing the Reds' late rally that averted a sweep by the Colorado Rockies.

One out away from getting their second series sweep at Great American Ball Park, the Rockies blew the lead in the ninth and wound up losing for the fifth time in seven games. They've blown leads in all of the five losses. Left-hander Chris Rusin (0-2) hit Joey Votto with a pitch to open the 13th. Winker connected on his first game-ending homer, finishing the longest game for both teams this season.

Dylan Floro (2-1) allowed a pair of singles over three innings. He batted in the 12th and grounded out.

                              CUBS 4, PHILLIES 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Anthony Rizzo hit a solo homer and added a second RBI with a sacrifice fly to lead the Cubs past the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Cubs won for the fifth time in six games to close to a half-game behind idle first-place Milwaukee in the NL Central.

Tommy LaStella and Kris Bryant had RBI singles in Chicago's three-run fifth inning. Rizzo's sac fly to left capped the rally after a video review determined Phillies catcher Andrew Knapp had illegally blocked the plate with his left leg as Albert Almora tried to score from third. Almora beat Dylan Cozen's strong throw from left field, but was unable to touch the plate with Knapp in the way. Almora initially was called out before the play was overruled.

Brian Duensing (2-0), the first of five Cubs relievers, got the win despite allowing two runs over one inning. Phillies starter Nick Pivetta (4-5) lost his third straight, yielding four runs on six hits in five innings. Brandon Morrow pitched the ninth for his 15th save.

                              TWINS 7, WHITE SOX 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jose Berrios pitched a six-hitter for his second complete game this season, and the Minnesota Twins hit three home runs against James Shields in a victory over the Chicago White Sox.

Berrios (7-5) retired his first 14 batters before Omar Narvarez's double. By that time, the 23-year-old right-hander already had a 7-0 lead. He struck out 10 and walked none to win for the fourth time in five starts.

Eduardo Escobar hit a two-run homer after a double by Eddie Rosario in the first against Shields (1-7), who has not won in 12 starts since opening day. Ehire Adrianza added a solo shot in the second inning. Then right after Brian Dozier's two-out RBI single in the fourth through a shift-created hole at second base, Rosario turned on an 86 mph cut fastball on the inside corner from Shields for a three-run drive just inside the right-field foul pole.

                              CARDINALS 4, MARLINS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Miles Mikolas rebounded from his first loss of the season to pitch three-hit ball over seven innings and lead the Cardinals over the Miami Marlins.

Mikolas (7-1) allowed an unearned run, struck out five and walked one, lowering his ERA to 2.27 as the Cardinals salvaged the series finale after a pair of losses. Mikolas, coming off a 4-0 loss to Pittsburgh, has pitched at least six innings in 10 of 12 starts this season.

Jordan Hicks pitched around a walk and a hit in the eighth, topping 100 mph on nine of 18 pitches, and Bud Norris finished the four-hitter with a perfect ninth for his 12th save in 13 chances. Jose Martinez homered for St. Louis.

Trevor Richards (0-3), who was born in Aviston, Illinois, 50 miles from St. Louis, gave up three runs and seven hits in five-plus innings.

                              BLUE JAYS 5, ORIOLES 4, 10 INNINGS

TORONTO (AP) - Aledmys Diaz hit a game-winning single in the 10th and the Blue Jays rallied from a three-run deficit in the ninth to beat the Baltimore Orioles.

Teoscar Hernandez doubled off Miguel Castro (1-2) to begin the 10th and Justin Smoak was intentionally walked before Kendrys Morales and Luke Maile struck out. Diaz won it with a single to the wall in left, giving Toronto just its second win in its past 12 home games.

Danny Barnes (2-1) pitched one inning for the win, which looked unlikely when Orioles closer Brad Brach entered with a 4-1 lead in the ninth. Brach had a streak of 10 consecutive scoreless outings, but couldn't extend his run.

Austin Wynns hit his first career home run, and Danny Valencia and Mark Trumbo hit back-to-back home runs for Baltimore. Toronto's Curtis Granderson hit his 46th career leadoff homer.

                              TIGERS 7, RED SOX 2

BOSTON (AP) - Leonys Martin had a two-run homer to cap a five-run first inning and the Detroit Tigers beat the Red Sox.

Detroit's victory ended a four-game win streak for Boston, which had outscored Detroit 13-1 in the first two games of the series.

Left-hander Matthew Boyd (4-4) was solid in his third career start against Boston, allowing just four hits and two runs while striking out six over 6 1/3 innings. He gave up a solo home run to Andrew Benintendi and had three wild pitches.

Detroit's early onslaught spoiled the major-league debut of 24-year-old left-hander Jalen Beeks (0-1), who ended his first big league inning by giving up five runs and four hits, including the two-run shot by Martin to put Detroit in front. That is the most earned runs given up by a Red Sox starter in his first career inning pitched, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

                              MARINERS 5, RAYS 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Mike Leake pitched into the ninth inning, Mitch Haniger homered and drove in three, and the AL West-leading Seattle Mariners beat the Tampa Bay Rays.

Leake (6-3) was lifted with a 5-1 lead after allowing his eighth hit, a leadoff double in the ninth to Wilson Ramos. Johnny Field hit a three-run double off Alex Colome before the former Rays' closer got a game-ending grounder from Daniel Robertson. The Mariners won for the 10th time in 13 games.

Robertson and Denard Span homered for the Rays, who have scored 16 runs during a seven-game losing streak. The slide includes a three-game sweep last weekend in Seattle. Austin Pruitt (1-3) took the loss.

                              ASTROS 5, RANGERS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Evan Gattis hit a two-run homer and an RBI single, and Gerrit Cole allowed one run over six solid innings as the Houston Astros topped the Texas Rangers.

Alex Bregman also homered for the Astros, and Jose Altuve had three singles after coming in with a big league-leading 85.

Cole (7-1) gave up just three singles - and none after the third inning - had eight strikeouts and walked three while throwing 102 pitches. He entered the game leading the American League in strikeouts (116) and was second in opponents' batting average (.171).

Cole Hamels (3-6) didn't allow a hit until Bregman's one-out double in the fourth. Altuve singled home Bregman to tie it at 1 and scored on Gattis' two-out homer. Bregman chased Hamels with his homer in the eighth. Hamels gave up five runs and seven hits, struck out five and walked two in 7 1/3 innings, his longest start of the season.
