      • LEADING OFF: Big Sexy vs Bronx Bombers; Harper in walk year
        May 20, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

BIG SEXY AND THE BRONX BOMBERS

Three days before his 45th birthday, Bartolo Colon (2-1, 2.82 ERA) pitches for last-place Texas against the hard-hitting New York Yankees, who socked nine homers and totaled 18 runs in the final two games of their series at Kansas City. Colon is 6-9 with a 6.11 ERA in 21 career appearances against the Yankees, one of his former teams. Masahiro Tanaka (4-2, 4.73) starts for New York.

        SNAKE BIT

Paul Goldschmidt and the slumping Diamondbacks try to snap out of their funk in Milwaukee. Arizona, which still leads the NL West, has lost four in a row and 10 of 11 - scoring just 22 runs in that span. ''Everybody here is a victim of trying to do too much,'' manager Torey Lovullo said. ''They want it so bad that we're doing things in a pressing manner. I just want us to remember that we're good when we're ourselves.'' Zack Greinke (3-2) goes on an extra day of rest against right-hander Chase Anderson (3-3), who is set to come off the disabled list. Anderson hasn't started since May 6 because of an illness. Greinke is 16-3 at Miller Park, including a 15-0 stretch when he pitched for the Brewers.

        WALK YEAR

In his final season before free agency, Bryce Harper has more walks (42) than hits (34). The 2015 NL MVP is stuck in a monthlong slump as the injury-depleted Nationals have struggled to protect him in the lineup. Since April 17, Harper has had three multihit games and 15 hitless games, and his batting average has dropped from .315 to a season-low .224. His 13 home runs are still tied for fourth-most in the majors, but he's gone deep just once since May 4. He went 1 for 10 with five strikeouts as Washington was swept by the Dodgers. Next up, Harper and the Nats host last-place San Diego.

        STATE RIVALS

The struggling Royals head to the other side of Missouri for an I-70 interleague series in St. Louis. Miles Mikolas (5-0, 2.63 ERA) opposes Kansas City right-hander Ian Kennedy (1-4, 4.98) in the opener of a three-game set. Mikolas has held opponents to two runs or fewer in his last six starts.

        TRY AGAIN

Jason Vargas gets another chance for his first win with the Mets after a miserable first three outings that led to him being skipped in the rotation. The left-hander, signed to a $16 million, two-year contract in February to provide veteran depth in New York's rotation, is 0-3 with a 13.86 ERA. He hasn't pitched since May 8, when he allowed four runs in four innings during a loss to the Reds. Vargas went 18-11 with a 4.16 ERA for Kansas City last year, tying for the major league lead in wins.

Odds to win the CFL’s Grey Cup this coming season:

              2-1: Calgary Stampeders

              5-1: Hamilton Tiger-Cats

              6-1: Saskatchewan, Winnipeg, Toronto

              7-1: Edmonton Eskimos

              12-1: BC Lions, Ottawa RedBlacks

              18-1: Montreal Alouettes

              **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

              13) Major League Baseball has something they need to clean up, for their own good, if they want to promote their product. I’m thinking it would be a pretty simple fix.

There was one 10pm Eastern time game Monday night; Rockies-Dodgers, but the game wasn’t shown in the Westgate SuperBook because Dodger games are blacked out in Las Vegas. Why?

              12) LA and Las Vegas are 265 miles apart, a 4-hour drive; why in God’s name would Dodger games be blacked out here?

There were over 100 people in the SuperBook when the NBA game ended Monday; lot of them would’ve stuck around and watched the ballgame, and thats good for the sport, but they all either went home or played blackjack or whatever.

They’re playing ballgames in Japan and England next year, to “grow the game”. How about showing the Dodgers in Las Vegas? That would grow the game, too.

              11) Was playing video poker Monday and was talking to a guy who is a Chicago cop; good guy. He told me the Westgate comps him his room because he plays video poker for ten hours at a time. Ten hours!!!! I wouldn’t be able to see the screen after half that long.

              10) SuperBook had ESPN’s volume on Monday night; the 90 minutes before the Celtics-Cavs game was a seemingly eternal pre-game show. I mean, a 2-hour game doesn’t need a 90-minute pregame show, where very little, if anything new is ever said.

Best of the on-air personalities is Jalen Rose, who actually says stuff you can learn from, or will at least make you think. He claimed Monday night that Kyrie Irving won’t be happy if Boston wins the NBA title with him sitting out, since it would increase the chances that he would have to move elsewhere when his contract comes up.

Interesting theory; not sure if it is true, but it something to consider going forward.

              9) 19-year old Juan Soto hit his first major league homer for the Nationals Monday night; he started this season in A ball, got only 35 plate appearances in AA before getting the call to the major leagues.

If Soto does real well in Washington, it’ll put pressure on Toronto’s brass to promote their #1 prospect, 19-year old Vladimir Guerrero Jr, who is batting .421 in the AA Eastern League. Thats .421 in 39 games, roughly 25% of a season.

              8) Orioles 3, White Sox 2— Chicago had guys on 1st and 3rd, two out and Jose Abreu up in the 9th inning; he was quickly walked intentionally, which isn’t a surprise. Abreu is the White Sox’ best hitter, and Buck Showalter doesn’t let the other team’s best hitter beat him, if he can help it.

When he was managing Arizona, Showalter once walked Barry Bonds intentionally in the ninth inning, with the bases loaded and the Diamondbacks nursing a 2-run lead. He walked a guy with bases loaded!!! Next guy lined out to right to end the game, by the way.

              7) Nationals 10, Padres 2— Padres’ 22-year old prospect Franmil Reyes hit his first big league homer Monday night in Washington; he is 3 for 20 in his first seven MLB games. He had 14 HR’s in 130 AB’s in AAA ball this season, before he was called up.

Reyes is listed at 6-5, 275; he looks bigger than that; his future may be as a DH. He didn’t look so good playing right field Monday.

              6) Washington 3, Tampa Bay 0— Golden Knight fans were delighted when Washington won and forced a Game 7, while the Las Vegas team rests its tired legs.

              5) Cavaliers 111, Celtics 102— This was by far the best game of this round of the playoffs, and it wasn’t that good. Home teams are 6-1 SU/ATS in the conference finals so far.

              4) Phillies 3, Braves 0— Atlanta got shut out only once in its first 42 games; they’ve been blanked twice in their last four games.

              3) 53% of NBA players have played in the G-League, which surprised me.

              2) New Jersey Giants’ coach Pat Shurmur threw out the first pitch at a Mets’ game this weekend, after they were turned down by #1 draft pick Saquon Barkley, who was born in the Bronx and has different baseball allegiances.

              1) Something I’m curious about but will probably never know: when good players leave the Patriots and go play somewhere else, are they happier away from Foxboro?

I’m not inferring they are or aren’t, other than I’ve read some stuff lately that suggests that maybe some guys are. Brady/Gronkowski aren’t at OTA’s this week; thats not a good sign.

Hottest team: Athletics (7-3 last 10)

The AL West race is turning into the most competitive one in baseball so far. The Astros are still leading the way with the Mariners right behind, followed by the Angels and Athletics. Oakland returns home from a highly successful 7-3 road trip against New York, Boston, and Toronto, capped off by a four-game sweep of the Blue Jays. In six of the seven victories, the Athletics’ offense carried them by scoring at least five runs, while also forging above the .500 mark on the road.

Oakland welcomes in Seattle for a key three-game series as the Mariners are riding a three-game winning streak. Trevor Cahill takes the mound for the A’s in the opener, as Oakland is unbeaten in his two home starts this season. Cahill struck out 12 batters in six innings of work in a 2-0 victory over Baltimore on May 5, as the A’s are hosting the Mariners for the first time this season. Seattle captured four of the first six meetings at Safeco Field, while three of the last four matchups have finished UNDER the total.

Coldest team: Diamondbacks (1-11 last 12)

What happened to the Arizona team that was running away with the NL West division following a 24-11 start? A lack of hitting is the answer, as the D-backs have scored two runs or less in nine of the past 12 games, while falling out of first place with the Rockies jumping them for the top spot. The Rockies edged the Dodgers on Monday, coupled with Arizona’s 4-2 defeat at Milwaukee as Zack Greinke allowed three home runs in the loss.

Arizona has lost five straight road games as the D-backs try to end that skid tonight with Matt Koch taking the mound. Koch seeks a better effort against the Brewers after getting tagged for eight runs and nine hits in 4.1 innings of work in an 8-2 home loss to Milwaukee last Wednesday. Brewers’ right-hander Jhoulys Chacin limited the D-backs to two hits and one run in seven innings in his last appearance against Arizona last week, but the Snakes picked up a 2-1 win.

Hottest pitcher: Vince Velasquez, Phillies (4-4, 4.37 ERA)

Philadelphia captured the opener against Atlanta on Monday, 3-0 to creep within a half-game of first place in the NL East. Velasquez heads to the hill for the Phillies in Game 2 looking to stay hot, while also trying to figure out this Braves’ lineup. The right-hander is coming off three straight wins over the Nationals, Giants, and Cardinals, while tossing six scoreless innings at St. Louis in his last outing. However, Velasquez has not been able to slow down Atlanta in three starts by going 0-3, as the righty has given up 13 earned runs in 12.2 innings.

Coldest pitcher: Andrew Suarez, Giants (1-3, 4.88 ERA)

San Francisco hasn’t had much luck when Suarez starts this season by posting a 1-4 team record. The southpaw has delivered a solid 28/5 strikeout to walk ratio, but was knocked around for four runs in the opening inning of a 6-3 defeat to the last-place Reds in his past outing. Suarez and the Giants have a tall task traveling to Houston to face the defending champion Astros as heavy underdogs. The good news for San Francisco is Houston’s 3-4 record in the last seven home series openers, while the Astros have scored three runs or less six times in this situation.

Biggest OVER run: Padres (5-2 last seven)

San Diego continues its road swing at Washington after getting blown out at Washington on Monday, 10-2. The Padres’ offense swung the bats well in the final two wins at Pittsburgh this past weekend by scoring 14 runs before Monday’s blowout loss. San Diego’s lineup has actually performed better of late by plating four runs or more in seven of the past 10 games, as Eric Lauer heads to the mound tonight. Lauer has been tagged for 10 runs in his last two starts, resulting in OVERS against the Cardinals and Pirates.

Biggest UNDER run: White Sox (7-1 last eight)

It took until late May for Chicago to finally win a home series, doing so this past weekend against Texas. The White Sox followed up that successful weekend with a home loss to the Orioles on Monday, 3-2. Chicago’s pitching has actually carried them of late by allowing three runs or less in five of the past six games, while the White Sox are turning around their total record at home following a 5-1 OVER mark in their previous homestand. James Shields heads to the mound for Chicago tonight as the righty has cashed the UNDER in four of the past five starts, while coming off his best outing of the season by allowing three hits and one run in seven innings against Texas.

Matchup to watch: Indians vs. Cubs

The second portion of this interleague series continues over the next two nights at Wrigley Field. The rematch of the 2016 World Series began in Cleveland last month as the Cubs blew out the Indians in opener, followed by a 4-1 victory by the Tribe.

Cleveland sits atop the AL Central in spite of owning a below .500 record at 22-23. The Indians dropped two of three at Houston this past weekend, as Cleveland sends out right-hander Trevor Bauer in the opener of this set. Bauer shut down the Cubs the last time he faced them at Progressive Field on April 25 by allowing one earned run and four hits in 6.2 innings of work. The former UCLA standout is coming off his first scoreless effort of the season in a 6-0 road victory at Detroit, while striking out 10 in eight innings last Wednesday.

The Cubs return home after grabbing three of four at Cincinnati as Tyler Chatwood heads to the hill. Chatwood has won his last two starts at Wrigley Field, while beating the Indians in the opener of their interleague set last month by tossing six solid innings and giving up one run. The Cubs look to extend their winning streak to five in home series openers dating back to late April, while hosting the Indians for the first time since Game 5 of the 2016 World Series.

Betcha didn’t know: Since getting blown out at Baltimore 17-1 on May 13, the Rays have caught fire by winning six of seven to close out their road trip. Tampa Bay went the unconventional route in its last two games against the Angels by starting reliever Sergio Romo in each of those contests. Romo pitched a total of 2.1 innings, but was able to shut down the top of the Angels’ lineup, possibly starting a trend where the bullpen would start the game and perhaps turn it over to a starter to eat up innings. Tampa Bay comes back home to battle Boston as Jake Faria heads to the hill with the Rays winning five of his past six starts.

                      Biggest public favorite
                      : Astros (-270) vs. Giants

Biggest public underdog: Tigers (+145) at Twins

Biggest line move: Rangers (+153 to +145) vs. Yankees

                      • LEADING OFF: Soto swings away, Harvey's home debut with Reds
                        May 21, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                        ENCORE!

Nationals outfielder Juan Soto looks to add to his hit total. The youngest player in the majors at 19, he launched a 442-foot home run Monday night in his first big league start. Soto also singled while driving in three runs at home against San Diego. According to Baseball-Reference.com, he was the first teenager to hit a home run in a major league game since Washington teammate Bryce Harper on Sept. 30, 2012.

                        COLE ON A ROLL

Gerrit Cole starts at home for Houston, facing the Giants. The right-hander has been dominant in his first season with the Astros, going 4-1 with a 1.75 ERA while striking out 93 in 61 2/3 innings.

                        OCTOBER FLASHBACKS

It's another rematch of the 2016 World Series when the Chicago Cubs host Cleveland at Wrigley Field. Trevor Bauer (3-3, 2.59 ERA) pitches for the Indians after throwing eight shutout innings with 10 strikeouts last Wednesday in Detroit. Tyler Chatwood (3-3, 3.14) goes for the Cubs. Bauer and Chatwood both won when the teams split a two-game series last month in Cleveland. Of course, it was the Cubs who rallied to win the World Series in seven games two years ago, taking Game 7 in extra innings at Cleveland for their first championship since 1908.

                        YOU, AGAIN

For the fourth time already this season, Braves right-hander Brandon McCarthy pitches against Vince Velasquez of the Phillies. It was the same thing Monday night when Atlanta's Mike Foltynewicz and Philadelphia's Nick Pivetta squared off for the fourth time this year. McCarthy (4-2, 5.05 ERA) will look to improve to 4-0 against the Phillies. He has a 2.25 ERA in three starts spanning 16 innings. Velasquez (4-4, 4.37) is 0-3 versus the Braves. He's lasted just 12 2/3 innings in those three outings.

                        FIRST IMPRESSION

Matt Harvey makes his home debut for Cincinnati against Pittsburgh. Acquired in a May 8 trade with the Mets, the former ace has started twice on the road for the Reds with mixed results in a pair of no-decisions. He threw four shutout innings of one-hit ball at Dodger Stadium and then was touched up for three runs and seven hits in four innings at San Francisco. One bright spot: Harvey hasn't walked a batter since joining the Reds' rotation, striking out seven. Jameson Taillon gets the ball as the Pirates try to snap a three-game skid. He is 0-3 in his last seven starts.

                        BEEN A WHILE

Both starters in the Yankees-Rangers matchup have had a lot of extra time to rest. Texas lefty Cole Hamels (2-4) will be pitching for the first time in 11 days, and Domingo German (0-1) is going to the mound for the first time in 10 days. Hamels was scratched from his last turn in the rotation because of neck stiffness. German, a rookie right-hander, got pushed back because New York had two scheduled off days in what turned out to be a rainy week.

                        D-BACKS DROUGHT

Arizona has lost five in a row and 11 of 12, scoring just 24 runs in that span. The Diamondbacks were playing well atop the NL West when their skid began. Matt Koch looks for big improvement in his start at Milwaukee - in his last outing, the Brewers tagged him for four home runs in 4 1/3 innings.

                          • Betts powers Red Sox past Rays 4-2
                            May 22, 2018

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Mookie Betts hit his major league-leading 16th homer, Chris Sale struck out nine in 7 2/3 innings and the Boston Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-2 on Tuesday night.

Sale (5-1) gave up four hits and walked two. He has allowed three runs or fewer in his first 11 starts, the longest stretch by a Boston pitcher to open a season since Pedro Martinez's 12 in 2001.

Joe Kelly finished the eighth, and Craig Kimbrel got into a bases-loaded jam before finishing his 14th save in 16 chances when Mallex Smith grounded into a game-ending forceout.

Willy Adames made his big league debut and hit a solo home run off Sale in his second at-bat. The 22-year-old shortstop prospect went 1 for 4 with three strikeouts.

Betts hit a three-run drive in the third off Jake Faria (3-3), who left two batters later because of a strained left oblique.

Two hitters following Faria's departure, Wilson Ramos was taken out due to a bruised left hand after Austin Pruitt's 0-2 pitch to Xander Bogaerts bounced and struck the catcher.

                            BRAVES 3, PHILLIES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ozzie Albies hit his 14th homer and Brandon McCarthy tossed 5 2/3 sharp innings, leading Atlanta to the victory.

McCarthy (5-2) allowed one run and four hits. He is 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA against Philadelphia this season and 1-2 with a 6.60 ERA against the rest of the league.

Vince Velasquez (4-5) gave up two runs - one earned - and fanned nine in 4 2/3 innings. He fell to 0-4 against the Braves.

The NL East's top two teams have already met 11 times, with Atlanta winning seven games.

Arodys Vizcaino finished with a perfect inning for his ninth save in 11 tries.

                            INDIANS 10, CUBS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Jose Ramirez hit his 14th homer and the Indians routed the Cubs in their first meeting at Wrigley Field since the 2016 World Series.

The AL Central leaders moved back to .500 with an easy victory against the team that beat them two years ago to end a 108-year championship drought.

Ramirez got the blowout going with his three-run drive in the third. The Indians scored four times in the inning while chasing a wild Tyler Chatwood (3-4).

Trevor Bauer (4-3) went six innings in his second straight scoreless start. The right-hander gave up seven hits and struck out six.

Yonder Alonso had three of Cleveland's 11 hits, including a three-run double in the fifth.

Chicago's Ian Happ led off the ninth with a pinch-hit homer against Josh Tomlin.

                            ASTROS 11, GIANTS 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Gerrit Cole struck out eight in six innings, leading Houston to the victory.

Both of the runs off Cole (5-1) scored on a fifth-inning homer by Brandon Crawford, whose sister Amy is married to Cole.

Tony Kemp had two hits and a career-high five RBIs as Houston won for the fifth time in six games.

San Francisco's Andrew Suarez (1-4) was tagged for five runs and in four-plus innings in his sixth major league start.

                            RANGERS 6, YANKEES 4

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Texas ace Cole Hamels limited the slugging Yankees to four hits over seven innings, and Jurickson Profar and Ronald Guzman homered for the last-place Rangers.

Profar's three-run homer in the first that just cleared the 8-foot wall in center put the Rangers ahead to stay against Domingo German (0-2). Guzman started the fourth with a liner into the right field seats, making it 6-1 only a few batters before the Yankees starter came out.
