      Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

      Streaking:
Max Scherzer, Washington Nationals (7-1, 1.69 ERA, $635)

News flash! Max Scherzer is good.

The two-time reigning National League Cy Young Award winner is well on his way to a third consecutive award with a team win/loss of 8-1, an ERA of 1.69, a WHIP of 0.82, and 91 strikeouts with only 13 walks,

"Mad Max" is on the hill for the Nationals today as -165 home favorites against CC Sabathia and the New York Yankees.

      Slumping:
Jason Hammel, Kansas City Royals (0-4, 6.13 ERA, $-553)

As good as Max Scherzer has been in 2018, Jason Hammel of the Kansas City Royals has been on the absolute opposite side of the spectrum. Hammel owns a 1-7 team win/loss record and it hasn't been simply the fact that he pitches for a bad team - some of this is on him. In his last three outings he's 0-2, 12.00 ERA, 2.07 WHIP, .413 opponent's on-base percentage, and he's allowed five home runs.

Hammel will try to clean it up today at home as a slight +100 underdog against Jake Faria and the Tampa Bay Rays.

      Wednesday's Top Trends

      * Over is 11-1 in Bauer's last 12 starts vs. Tigers. CLE/DET total: 9.5.
      * Twins are 15-3 in their last 18 interleague games. +100 today vs. Cardinals.
      * Mets are 0-9 in their last nine games following a win. +120 today vs. Blue Jays.
      * Royals are 2-11 in their last 13 home games vs. a right-handed starter. +100 today vs. Rays.
      * Diamondbacks are 1-6 in their last seven overall. +105 today vs. Brewers.
      * Giants are 6-1 in their last seven home games. -160 today vs. Reds.
      * Under is 10-1 in Nationals' last 11 interleague games. NYY/WAS total: 7.5.
      * Cubs are 6-0 in the last six meetings with the Braves in Atlanta. -110 today at ATL.

      Weather Watch

Wind will not be a factor at any Major League Baseball stadiums Wednesday, but rain will still be a major issue in the Northeast.

For the afternoon slate of games there is a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms rolling through during the Pirates game against the White Sox, there is an increasing chance of rain all day in Baltimore where the Orioles are scheduled to take on the Phillies, and the Blue Jays and Mets might have a tough time getting their game in today at Citi Field with rain in the forecast all day.

As for the evening, we'd be surprised if the Yankees and Nationals were able to squeeze anything in tonight at Nationals Park with rain expected all evening in the nation's capital and there are thunderstorms in the Atlanta area tonight where the Braves are scheduled to take on the Cubs.

      Ump of the Day

Doug Eddings will be calling balls and strikes today in San Francisco where the Giants will take on the Reds. Eddings has been an Under machine thus far in 2018 at 6-1, and dating back to last season the Under is 16-5-1 in his last 22 games behind the plate.

The total for today's game in San Francisco is currently set at 8.5.

      • LEADING OFF: Gordon gets 2nd chance at 2B? Yanks-Nats resume
        May 16, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

        SECOND CHANCE

Dee Gordon and the Mariners are contemplating a move back to second base for the 2015 Gold Glove Award winner. Gordon was moved to center field following an offseason trade to Seattle from Miami, but now the Mariners need help at the keystone with Robinson Cano serving an 80-game suspension for violating baseball's drug agreement. Gordon Beckham and Andrew Romine will play second for the short-term, but Gordon took infield practice Tuesday and could find himself back on the dirt in a game soon.

        RAIN GAMES

The Nationals and Yankees will resume a game suspended Tuesday night in the middle of the sixth inning before playing the finale of a two-game set. The score is tied 3-3, with New York rallying from three down behind Tyler Austin's two-run homer and a sacrifice fly. Of course, rain is also in the forecast Wednesday in Washington, and Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he did not think the teams would make up those games on both team's scheduled day off Thursday if they're postponed Wednesday.

        SITTING CESPEDES?

Mets star Yoenis Cespedes may be headed to the disabled list with a strained right hip flexor. The outfielder has been dealing with the nagging injury for more than a week, but general manager Sandy Alderson is weighing a 10-day DL stint because ''we're better off taking a more precautionary approach.'' Cespedes was held out of the starting lineup Tuesday.

        SNAKE BIT

The Diamondbacks will try to maintain their hold on the NL West without A.J. Pollock for the next 1-2 months after he was diagnosed with a broken left thumb Tuesday. Pollock was injured diving for a line drive in the outfield Monday and saw a specialist Tuesday. Pollock leads the team with a .293 average, 11 home runs and 33 RBIs. He hasn't played a full healthy season since 2015.

        HARVEY DAY

Matt Harvey makes his second start for the Reds in a game at San Francisco. The right-hander pitched four scoreless innings in his Cincinnati debut after being cut by the Mets. He was limited to 55 pitches in a 6-2 win over the Dodgers and pushed his fastball to a season-best 95.8 mph. He'll be on a limited pitch count again against the Giants.

        MILES MAGIC

Miles Mikolas tries to improve to 6-0 when St. Louis faces Minnesota. Mikolas has a 2.51 ERA in seven starts since returning from a three-year stint in Japan. He's been doing it with outstanding control, walking only three batters over 46 2/3 innings.

        SIDELINED

The Pirates are hoping for good news on injured center fielder Starling Marte, who left a game Tuesday night with right side discomfort. Marte is hitting .308 with six home runs and 19 RBIs. He doubled and scored in the first inning before leaving the game against the Chicago White Sox.

          May 16, 2018

Hottest team: Phillies (7-3 last 10)

Philadelphia didn’t have an opportunity to play last night thanks to the rain in the Beltway. The Phillies enter their interleague series with the Orioles off a successful 5-1 homestand, which includes a four-game sweep of the Giants. Philadelphia split a two-game series with the Mets as the lone loss came in the opener as New York scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to win, 3-1.

The pitching has carried the Phillies of late as the staff has allowed three runs or less in six straight games. Right-hander Nick Pivetta heads to the mound this afternoon as Philadelphia has won six of his eight starts this season. Pivetta is coming off his second scoreless effort of the season after tossing five innings and allowing four hits in an 11-3 rout of the Giants on May 9.

Coldest team: Dodgers (2-8 last 10)

How bad has it been for the defending National League champions? Los Angeles enters tonight’s play at Miami owning a one-game edge over the Marlins, a team that was expected to lose 100 games this season. The Marlins picked up their third win in four tries against the Dodgers this season in Tuesday’s 4-2 victory as +160 underdogs, marking the fifth consecutive loss by L.A. To make matters worse, all five of these losses have come to last-place teams with the first four coming courtesy of the Reds this past weekend.

The most consistent pitcher for the Dodgers with Clayton Kershaw sidelined is Walker Buehler, who toes the rubber tonight. Buehler has allowed two earned runs or less in all four starts this season, including spearheading a no-hit performance by the Dodgers’ staff in a win over the Padres in Mexico on May 4. The right-hander struck out eight in six innings in his last outing, a 4-1 defeat to Cincinnati as a -175 home favorite.

Hottest pitcher: Miles Mikolas, Cardinals (5-0, 2.51 ERA)

The Twins have had the Cardinals’ number in three matchups this season, limiting St. Louis to three runs in three victories. St. Louis seeks a split of its two-game set at Target Field as Mikolas looks to keep his record unblemished. Mikolas has yielded five earned runs in past five starts combined, while coming off a 2-1 victory at San Diego last Thursday as a -150 favorite. The right-hander has pitched into the seventh inning in six consecutive outings, as the Cardinals look to avoid their first four-game losing streak of the season.

Coldest pitcher: Jason Hammel, Royals (0-4, 6.13 ERA)

Normally a pitcher wouldn’t be featured here if their team is off a win in his last start. The Royals erased a five-run deficit to beat the Indians in Hammel’s last start, 10-9, but the right-hander was tagged for nine runs in less than four innings of work. The victory was actually the first for the Royals with Hammel starting this season in eight outings. Kansas City tries to avoid the sweep against Tampa Bay this afternoon as the Royals own an 0-3 mark in Hammel’s three home starts in 2018.

Biggest OVER run: Tigers (6-1-1 last eight)

The AL Central race is tightening up at the top, although the leader still doesn’t have a winning record. The Indians are 20-21 following last night’s meltdown loss at Detroit, 9-8 after blowing a pair of five-run leads. Detroit’s offense has opened up of late by scoring 20 runs in the last three victories, while plating at least four runs in eight consecutive contests. The task won’t be easy against the Indians today as Trevor Bauer heads to the hill, owning an ERA of 3.00 in eight starts, while beating the Tigers earlier this season, 9-3.

Biggest UNDER run: Astros (9-1-1 last 11)

We’ll double-dip on the defending champions with the latest UNDER streak along with their series finale against the Angels. Houston rallied for a 5-3 victory on Tuesday night as the Astros haven’t allowed more than three runs in nine consecutive games. Gerrit Cole has been tremendous this season for Houston, but two of his shakiest starts have come against the Angels, as the right-hander yielded three earned runs in five innings on Tuesday, before the Astros scored four late runs to manage a PUSH on an 8 total.

Matchup to watch: Astros vs. Angels

Houston has won six of its last eight games, all coming against AL West opponents to own a one-game advantage over Los Angeles and Seattle heading into Wednesday’s action. Jose Altuve’s bases-clearing double in the eighth inning on Tuesday helped spark a late rally as the Astros topped the Angels, 5-3 to cash as -160 favorites. The Astros improved to 2-3 against the Angels this season, as Houston sends out one of its Cy Young winners in the finale.

Justin Verlander has compiled a miniscule 1.21 ERA this season, but is winless in his last two starts. Houston’s offense came up dry for Verlander in losses to Arizona and Texas by scoring a combined one run, although the ace allowed three hits and one earned run in six innings of work each time. Verlander topped the Halos at Minute Maid Park last month as a -200 favorite, 5-2 by striking out nine batters in seven innings of work.

Garrett Richards counters for the Angels, as Los Angeles has put together a 6-2 record in his eight starts this season. The right-hander has received fantastic run support of late as the Angels have scored 12 runs in his past two outings, while L.A. has plated at least five runs in six of his appearances. In two September starts last season against Houston, Richards held his own by giving up five hits and one earned run in 12 innings of work, but the Angels lost the two games, 1-0 and 3-0.

Betcha didn’t know: The Athletics have had their way with the Red Sox this season by capturing four of five matchups. Oakland shoots for the unlikely sweep at Fenway Park tonight, but the Red Sox have two things on their side. First, Boston is sending out ace Chris Sale, as the Red Sox haven’t lost consecutive starts made by the southpaw this season coming off a 5-3 defeat at Toronto. Secondly, Boston has compiled a superb 11-1 record in Game 3’s of a series, including a perfect 5-0 mark at home.

          Biggest public favorite:
          Red Sox (-250) vs. Athletics

Biggest public underdog: Braves (+100) vs. Cubs

Biggest line move: Royals (+105 to -105) vs. Rays

              Wednesday MLB Best Bet
              Chicago Cubs vs Atlanta Braves

The Cubs and Braves do battle in Game 3 of a four-game series tonight with the first two games split right down the middle. Each team has a one-run win in this “modified” series – Atlanta's win in Game 1 was actually in Chicago as a makeup game – but the Cubs bounced back yesterday with a 3-2 win on Atlanta's field thanks to a two-run comeback in the top of the 9th on a Ben Zobrist single.

Tonight's game has already seen some significant line movement in Atlanta's favor, but late losses like that can be hard to bounce back from immediately. Will the Braves be able to do it and prove all their betting steam as correct?

Chicago (-102), Atlanta (-108); Total set at 9.5

First off let's get to the line movement here as it can't be ignored. Chicago actually opened up as -120ish favorites for this game and stayed in the -115 range overnight until the morning wave of bettors got up and pounded the Braves. Whether they all had dreams of seeing Atlanta win tonight I don't know, but the Braves have now flipped over to being favorites tonight, which is rather surprising when you see who they've got on the mound.

Atlanta is starting veteran Brandon McCarthy who has actually been a sore spot for the Braves despite their 25-16 start to the season. Atlanta is 5-3 SU in McCarthy's eight starts this year, but it's really no thanks to him as he's got a 5.58 ERA and a 1.71 WHIP in those outings, allowing 54 hits in just 40.1 IP.

Those Braves victories have been because the offense has averaged 7.1 runs per game in support for McCarthy (the 'overs' are 7-1) and erased most of his mistakes in that time. Relying on that type of production is a slippery slope as without question, McCarthy's results have way over-produced compared to his performance.

Speaking of that, McCarthy has gone from bad to worse of late as his ERA sits at 9.88 over his last three starts and the 28 hits he's allowed in just 13.2 IP during that span is just awful. In fact, the only really success he's had this year has been against the Philadelphia Phillies – McCarthy has pitched three times against Philly and has won all three games (15-2, 7-3, and 10-1) – and while the Phillies may be a team on the upswing, they don't have the offensive talent that the Cubs do.

Hell, in McCarthy's last two starts he's allowed 12 and 11 hits to the “offensive juggernaut” teams from Miami and San Francisco (I kid about the offensive juggernaut status), and yet he's a guy that bettors are putting their faith in tonight by flipping Atlanta to the favorites? I simply don't buy it.

Chicago counters with Tyler Chatwood, and while the Cubs are just 3-4 SU in his seven starts this year, Chatwood has done his part. He's got a 3.35 ERA on the season (2.81 over his last three starts), and has started to show signs of being a reliable fifth starter the Cubs were looking for when they signed him. There is no shortage of 'pop' behind Chatwood in the field for the Cubs, and they are just the sort of lineup that loves pounding on a struggling pitcher like McCarthy.

With last night's late comeback win the kindling for a potential hot streak the Cubs may have brewing and the line move being what it is, I've got no problem taking a better price on the better team in my opinion.

Atlanta – and especially McCarthy – don't deserve all this support they've gotten already today as it would not shock me to see Chicago light up McCarthy early and win this game going away.

              Best Bet: Chicago (-102)

              • Yankees, Nats clash
                May 16, 2018

                By Tom Wilkinson

New York Yankees vs. Washington Nationals

Two of the top teams in the league meet on Wednesday night on ESPN, as the New York Yankees visit the Washington Nationals.

The Yankees are battling with the Red Sox for first place in the AL East, while the Nationals are just behind the Braves in the NL East.

The probable pitching matchup for Wednesday night has CC Sabathia going against Max Scherzer. Let’s look at the contest and MLB picks.

New York Yankees vs. Washington Nationals
Date and Time: Wednesday, May 16, 2018, 7:05 p.m. ET
                Location: Nationals Park, Washington, D.C.
                MLB Odds : Nationals -166, O/U 7.5 under
Probable Pitchers: CC Sabathia vs. Max Scherzer
Yankees vs. Nationals TV Coverage: ESPN

The Yankees have been winning regardless of whether they are at home or on the road. They were 10-5 in their first 15 road games, with six games going over the total, eight going under, with one push. New York leads the league in runs per game, as they are scoring just over 5.7 runs per game. They are 10th in ERA, allowing about 3.7 runs per contest. It is extremely rare to see a team winning by an average of two runs per game, but that is the scoring margin for the Yankees so far this season.

The Nationals have not been that good at home this season and that is the main reason they are not in first place. They were just 10-10 in their first 20 home games, with nine games going over the total and 11 going under. They are scoring about 4.5 runs per game and giving up about 3.4 per contest.

                Starting Pitchers

Sabathia is 2-0 on the season with a 2.23 ERA. He has made just seven starts this season because he was injured but most of his starts have been really good. His last start against Boston was an exception, as he gave up four runs and nine hits in four innings. He is 2-1 in his career against the Nationals with a 2.25 ERA.

Scherzer is 7-1 on the season with a 1.69 ERA. He continues to dominate opposing teams and pitch at least six innings. He has gone at least six innings in each of his last seven starts. He was set to start on Friday against the Dodgers, but the Nationals had an off day on Monday, so Scherzer was moved up in the rotation to pitch on his normal four days of rest. Tanner Roark will now be moved back to start on Friday. Scherzer has not faced the Yankees since 2015 and New York is a much different team now than they were three years ago.

                Key Stats

The Yankees are 4-1 in their last 5 road games vs. a right-handed starter. The Yankees are 4-1 in Sabathia’s last 5 starts. They are 18-7 in Sabathia’s last 25 interleague starts. The Nationals are 3-8 in their last 11 vs. the American League East. The Nationals are 3-9 in their last 12 games vs. a left-handed starter. The Nationals are 19-7 in Scherzer’s last 26 home starts.

Looking at the total, the Over is 18-7-1 in the Yankees last 26 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Under is 16-5-2 in Sabathia’s last 23 road starts. The Under is 7-0 in the Nationals last 7 games vs. a left-handed starter. The Over is 5-1 in Scherzer’s last 6 starts overall.

                Yankees vs. Nationals Picks

The Yankees are the better team, but the Nationals have the pitching advantage in this contest, so I will avoid a side and look at the total. The Nationals have really struggled against left-handed starters this season and Sabathia has been pitching really well for most of this year. Scherzer has been excellent all season and he should be able to hold down the potent New York lineup. Sabathia’s road starts normally go under the total and Washington’s last seven games against a left-handed starter have gone under the total. I will go under the total in this Wednesday night contest.

Yankees vs. Nationals Pick: Under the Total
Yankees vs. Nationals Score Prediction: Nationals 3, Yankees 2

                  • Colon pitches Rangers over Mariners
                    May 16, 2018

SEATTLE (AP) Bartolo Colon laughed off having Jean Segura's line drive hit him in the stomach, allowing four hits in 7 2/3 shutout innings and giving the Texas Rangers a 5-1 win over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday.

Colon (2-1), who turns 45 on May 24, struck out two, walked none and threw 71 of 96 pitches for strikes.

Delino DeShields gave Texas the lead with a two-out RBI double in the eighth inning that scored Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who had singled off James Pazos (1-1). The Rangers added four more in the ninth, all after Ryon Healy's two-out error.

                    ASTROS 2, ANGELS 0

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Justin Verlander pitched a five-hitter for his first shutout in three years and Evan Gattis hit a two-run homer as Houston beat Los Angeles.

Verlander (5-2) was superb in ending his two-game skid, finishing with seven strikeouts to reach 2,500 for his career. He walked one and lowered his ERA from 1.21 to 1.05.

The right-hander threw 118 pitches in his 24th career complete game and first since 2016 with Detroit. With two runners on, he retired Zack Cozart on an infield popup to polish off his eighth major league shutout and first since 2015 with the Tigers.

Houston took two of three in the series and holds a two-game lead in the AL West over the Angels.

Gattis' fourth home run came off hard-luck loser Garrett Richards (4-2) in the second after a two-out throwing error by Cozart at third base.

                    MARLINS 6, DODGERS 5

MIAMI (AP) - The Los Angeles Dodgers erased a four-run deficit and still lost their sixth game in a row when J.T. Realmuto's tiebreaking homer in the sixth inning helped Miami win.

The Marlins clinched the series after another last-place team, Cincinnati, swept a four-game set at Los Angeles. The defending NL champion Dodgers and the rebuilding Marlins have identical 16-26 records.

Miami's Justin Bour hit a two-run homer. Starlin Castro tied a career high with four hits to hike his batting average to .300.

Yasmani Grandal hit his seventh homer and singled in a run for the Dodgers.

Drew Steckenrider (2-1) got the win. Brad Ziegler pitched around a leadoff single in the ninth for his seventh save, with Justin Turner bouncing into a game-ending double play.

Pedro Baez (1-2) gave up the homer by Realmuto, who has at least one hit in all 21 career games against the Dodgers.

                    RED SOX 6, ATHLETICS 4

BOSTON (AP) - Xander Bogaerts hit a three-run homer, J.D. Martinez added a two-run shot and Boston avoided its first series sweep this season by beating Oakland.

The win also prevented the Red Sox from matching their season-high losing streak of three games.

Chris Sale (4-1) gave up two runs and two hits in five innings, striking out nine and walking four - his most base on balls since also issuing four on Aug. 31, 2016.

Craig Kimbrel, the fourth reliever, got three outs for his 12th save.

Marcus Semien hit a two-run homer, and Matt Joyce and Matt Olson each had a solo shot for the Athletics, who won the season series 4-2. Trevor Cahill (1-2) gave up three runs to the first four batters he faced, but held the Red Sox scoreless the rest of his five innings.

                    BRAVES 4, CUBS 1

ATLANTA (AP) - Ronald Acuna Jr. drove in Ozzie Albies with the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning to send Atlanta past Chicago.

Carl Edwards Jr. (2-1) allowed five straight baserunners in Atlanta's three-run eighth, including a bases-loaded walk to Tyler Flowers, without getting an out. Justin Hancock also forced in a run with a walk to Johan Camargo.

The Braves' big inning was set up by Albies' triple to the wall in center field past Albert Almora Jr., who robbed Flowers of a probable home run earlier in the game.

Albies scored on Acuna's second hit, a sharp single off Edwards. Albies also scored Atlanta's first run after his leadoff double in the first.

A.J. Minter (2-0) stranded two runners in the eighth. Arodys Vizcaino, who blew a save opportunity in Tuesday night's 3-2 loss to Chicago, pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save in 10 chances.

Kris Bryant had three hits for the Cubs.

                    PHILLIES 4, ORIOLES 1

BALTIMORE (AP) - Nick Pivetta (3-2) tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts, and Cesar Hernandez homered as Philadelphia (24-16) climbed eight games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 2011 season.

Odubel Herrera singled in the first and extended his on-base streak to 42 games for the Phillies, who have won six of seven.

Andrew Cashner (1-5) allowed three runs, five hits and three walks over 5 2/3 innings. He has not won since April 5. Baltimore (13-29) has the second-worst record in the AL.

                    PIRATES 3, WHITE SOX 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pinch-hitter Josh Bell singled off Joakim Soria (0-2) to break a 2-2 tie in the seventh.

Pittsburgh has won seven of eight and improved to 10-2 in interleague play this season. Chicago has lost eight of nine and 13 of 15. A major league-worst 10-29, the White Sox have matched their worst start since 1948.

Rookie Edgar Santana (1-0) allowed one hit in 1 1/3 scoreless innings for his first major league win, and Felipe Vazquez remained perfect in eight save opportunities.

                    INDIANS 6, TIGERS 0

DETROIT (AP) - Trevor Bauer (3-3) struck out 10 in eight innings and allowed four hits as Cleveland avoided a three-game sweep.

Ryan Carpenter (0-1) gave up six runs - five earned - and seven hits in five innings, and his throwing error to first on a comebacker allowed the first run to score. Tigers center fielder JaCoby Jones left in the third with a left hip injury.

Michael Brantley had three hits, including a solo homer.

                    CARDINALS 7, TWINS 5

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Dexter Fowler reached base four times and drove in two runs in his return to the lineup. Matt Carpenter had three hits after being demoted to seventh in the batting order, and Tommy Pham added two hits, including his eighth homer of the year.

Jordan Hicks (2-1) pitched a scoreless inning, and Bud Norris got five outs for his ninth save.

Former Cardinal Lance Lynn (1-4) gave up three runs, four hits and four walks in three innings.

                    BLUE JAYS 12, METS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - J.A. Happ (5-3) reached three times and allowed only two runners over seven innings, and Toronto got its first road victory at the Mets after going 0-12.

Happ struck out 10 while pitching two-hit ball. The left-hander also singled twice and walked in his first multihit game since 2011, when he had two hits for Houston at Citi Field.

New York's Brandon Nimmo homered off Danny Barnes with two outs in the ninth and Wilmer Flores added a double before Barnes finished a four-hitter.

Justin Smoak, Teoscar Hernandez and Richard Urena each homered and drove in three runs as Toronto piled up 15 hits.

Zack Wheeler (2-3) was charged with six runs, seven hits and three walks in four-plus innings, bringing his ERA to 5.92.

                    RAYS 5, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - C.J. Cron homered and scored three runs, and Tampa Bay completed a three-game sweep of the woeful Royals.

Cron extended his on-base streak to 22 games when he was hit by a pitch from Jason Hammel (0-5) in a three-run first that included Brad Miller's RBI groundout and Adeiny Hechavarria's two-run single.

Matt Andriese (1-1) allowed three hits in three scoreless innings, and Alex Colome pitched a one-hit ninth for his ninth save. Tampa Bay swept the Royals for the first time since 2011.

Kansas City has lost five straight, dropping to 13-30 for its worst start since 2006. Hammel gave up five runs and 10 hits in six innings and is 0-8 with a 7.28 ERA in 13 starts since winning at Detroit on Sept. 6.

PHOENIX (AP) - Travis Shaw, Domingo Santana, Christian Yelich and Tyler Saladino homered in the first four innings off Matt Koch (2-2), who allowed all eight runs.

Brandon Woodruff (2-0) gave up one hit in five innings, Daniel Descalso's two-run homer in the first.

Milwaukee has won three of four, outscoring opponents 23-9. Arizona finished a 1-6 homestand and has lost seven of eight heading into a nine-game trip.

                    REDS 6, GIANTS 3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Scooter Gennett homered a half-inning after the second baseman saved two runs with a diving catch on a difficult popup, helping Cincinnati avoid a sweep. Adam Duvall hit a three-run homer in the first, and Jared Hughes (2-2) pitched two scoreless innings as Cincinnati won for the seventh time in nine games.

Staked to a 4-0 first-inning lead, Reds Matt Harvey allowed three runs, seven hits and four walks in four innings. Raisel Iglesias got three outs for his eighth save.

Andrew Suarez (1-3) gave up five runs and eight hits in six innings.
