  • Ohtani's start pushed back to weekend
    April 30, 2018

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Shohei Ohtani will have his upcoming scheduled start pushed to next weekend after spraining his left ankle on Friday.

The Los Angeles Angels' two-way sensation was slated to pitch Tuesday against Baltimore, but manager Mike Scioscia said Sunday he instead expects Ohtani to start during a three-game series at Seattle that begins Friday.

''We're targeting Shohei to pitching somewhere on the weekend in Seattle just to make sure this is behind him and he gets the proper workout to test it more instead of rushing him and trying to see where he is on Wednesday,'' Scioscia said. ''It's the best course of action for Shohei and for us.''

Ohtani played catch before Sunday's game, and Scioscia said he was available to pinch hit in 2-1 loss to New York on Sunday night. Ohtani will likely be in the lineup against Baltimore.

Ohtani is 2-1 with a 4.43 ERA. The Japanese star won his first two major league starts against Oakland, but went just two innings because of a blister against Boston and gave up four runs in 6 1/3 innings at Houston on Tuesday.

Ohtani is hitting .341 with four home runs and 12 RBIs in 12 games.

      • Astros end Yanks' 9-game win streak with 2-1 victory
        April 30, 2018

HOUSTON (AP) Charlie Morton pitched two-hit ball into the eighth inning and struck out 10 as the Houston Astros snapped the New York Yankees' nine-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory Monday night.

Carlos Correa had two hits and an RBI for Houston in the first meeting between the teams since Game 7 of last year's AL Championship Series, when Morton allowed two hits over five innings for the win in a 4-0 victory that sent the defending champion Astros to the World Series.

Houston has won seven straight at home against the Yankees including the postseason, and the Astros have held them to no more than one run in their past six games here.

Morton (4-0) had allowed just one hit when Gleyber Torres chased him with a two-out double in the eighth. Brad Peacock took over and walked pinch-hitter Aaron Judge, who didn't start for the first time this season, and Torres stole third base.

Chris Devenski replaced Peacock and was greeted with an RBI single by Brett Gardner that cut the lead to 2-1. Devenski then fanned AL player of the week Didi Gregorius on three pitches to end the inning.

Ken Giles struck out the side in the ninth for his third save.

Sonny Gray (1-2) allowed four hits and two runs while walking three in six innings to snap a streak of three straight starts in which he didn't get out of the fifth inning.

        RED SOX 10, ROYALS 6

BOSTON (AP) - Xander Bogaerts hit a grand slam over the Green Monster and Boston finished April with its most wins ever by beating Kansas City.

Mitch Moreland hit a solo homer and had three hits along with Bogaerts for the Red Sox, who posted their 19th victory in April. They had reached 18 three times, the last coming in their World Series-winning 2013 season.

Whit Merrifield had three hits and two RBIs for the Royals, who were coming off their first consecutive wins this season.

Hector Velazquez (4-0), the first of three relievers, worked two scoreless innings of relief for the victory.

Trailing 3-0, Boston scored a run in the second on Moreland's homer and five off Jason Hammel (0-3) in a third inning highlighted by Bogaerts' slam that completely left Fenway Park. Moreland drew a bases-loaded walk for the other run.

It was Boston's sixth slam of the season, tying the 1996 Montreal Expos for most ever in the majors by May 1.

        CUBS 3, ROCKIES 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Jon Lester pitched effectively into the sixth inning, continuing an impressive stretch for Chicago's rotation and helping the Cubs beat the Colorado for their season-high fifth straight victory.

Lester allowed two runs and five hits, struck out five and walked three. Luke Farrell (1-0) worked 1 1/3 innings of perfect relief for his first career win, and Steve Cishek got two outs for his first save.

The Rockies put runners on first and second with two outs in the ninth before Cishek struck out Nolan Arenado.

Lester extended the streak for Chicago's starting pitchers to 33 2/3 innings without giving up an earned run. The Cubs have permitted just four runs and 21 hits during their last five games.

Colorado wasted a solid start by Kyle Freeland (1-4) in its third straight loss. The left-hander pitched seven innings of three-run ball, allowing six hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

        BREWERS 6, REDS 5

CINCINNATI (AP) - Homers by Manny Pina and Lorenzo Cain ended Milwaukee's historically bad slump, and Domingo Santana doubled home the go-ahead runs in the seventh inning for a victory over Cincinnati.

The Brewers managed only two runs while getting swept four games at Wrigley Field, matching their lowest total for a four-game series. They had 14 hits total, their worst for such a series, and were blanked on two hits in each of the past two games.

Wandy Peralta (1-2) gave up a hit and a pair of walks to fuel the rally. A throwing error by catcher Tucker Barnhart let in one run, and Santana doubled over Billy Hamilton's head in center field for a 6-5 lead.

Brandon Woodruff (1-0) retired the four batters he faced. Josh Hader got the last eight outs - all on strikeouts - for his fourth save in as many chances.

Cincinnati fell to 7-22, matching the worst 29-game start in franchise history. The Reds had the same record in 1931 and 1934.

        INDIANS 7, RANGERS 5

CLEVELAND (AP) - Jose Ramirez's RBI double broke an eighth-inning tie and Cleveland rallied for a win over Texas.

Texas scored twice in the top of the eighth to go ahead 4-3, but the Indians quickly regained the lead by scoring four times against Chris Martin (0-1).

Cody Allen (2-0) pitched 1 1/3 innings. The right-hander put two runners on with one out in the ninth. Jurickson Profar grounded out, but Nomar Mazara's infield hit cut the deficit to 7-5.

Allen, the Indians' closer, was pulled after throwing 41 pitches. Jeff Beliveau fell behind Joey Gallo 3-0, but came back to strike him out for his first save of the season and second of his career.

        NATIONALS 3, PIRATES 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Tanner Roark pitched seven efficient innings and drove in his first run since 2016, and Washington beat Pittsburgh.

Roark (2-2) allowed two runs and six hits, struck out four and induced two double play grounders for his first win since April 2 as the Nationals ended a disappointing April with their second straight victory.

Starting pitcher Jameson Taillon (2-3) drove in the first run for the Pirates with a two-out double to deep left-center in the fifth. He worked six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, as NL Central-leading Pittsburgh lost for the first time since his previous start. The Pirates had won five straight.

Brandon Kintzler worked the ninth for his first save in place of regular closer Sean Doolittle, who had pitched in the previous three games.

        BLUE JAYS 7, TWINS 5

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Justin Smoak and Russell Martin homered, Yangervis Solarte had three hits and Toronto edged Minnesota.

Smoak hit a towering, two-run shot to cap a three-run fourth inning to stake Toronto to a 5-0 lead. Martin added a solo homer to the second deck in left field an inning later as the Blue Jays won their second game in a row.

The Twins have lost 10 of their past 11 games.

Aaron Sanchez (2-2) was the beneficiary of the run support. He pitched six innings and allowed four runs and six hits and three walks. Roberto Osuna allowed two hits in the ninth, but stranded runners at second and third to earn his seventh save in eight chances.

Minnesota's Lance Lynn (0-3) struggled with his command again and couldn't get past the fifth inning for the fourth time in five starts this season. Lynn gave up six runs in five innings. He allowed seven hits and walked five batters. He has an 8.37 ERA for the season.

        MARLINS 8, PHILLIES 4

MIAMI (AP) - Brian Anderson homered, drove in four runs and made a diving catch in right field with the bases loaded to preserve a lead, helping Miami beat Jake Arrieta and Philadelphia.

The Marlins have won three games in a row for the first time this season, and five of six. The Phillies lost their third consecutive game.

Arrieta (3-1) lasted only 3 2/3 innings. He allowed six earned runs after giving up three or fewer in each of his past 18 starts.

Jorge Alfaro and Maikel Franco each hit a two-run homer off Dan Straily.

The Phillies' Odubel Herrera singled in the first inning to reach base safely in his 30th consecutive game, the longest active streak in the majors.

Merandy Gonzalez (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings.

        RAYS 3, TIGERS 2

DETROIT (AP) - C.J. Cron and Brad Miller each homered in the ninth inning and Tampa Bay held on for a victory over Detroit.

With the game scoreless, Detroit closer Shane Greene (1-2) walked Denard Span to start the ninth. Cron followed by hitting a 2-0 fastball into the right-center field seats for his seventh homer of the season. After Matt Duffy popped out, Brad Miller homered into the left-field bullpens to make it 3-0 and end Greene's night.

But Detroit loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth on two hit batters and an infield single. Jose Alvarado replaced Chaz Roe and allowed a two-run single to Victor Martinez, then retired James McCann before walking John Hicks to load the bases again. Dixon Machado then grounded into a game-ending force at second to give Alvarado his first career save.

The Rays have won nine of their past 10 games after a 4-13 start.

Rays starter Jake Faria (2-1) had the longest outing of his career, holding the Tigers scoreless for eight innings. He gave up three hits and a walk with six strikeouts in his second win in 11 starts.

Felix Hernandez threw the last perfect game in the major leagues, in 2012.

          Sunday’s quiz
Before this week, Mets had played 14 series at Petco Park in San Diego; they won one of the 14 series, in 2011.

          ******************************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

          13) Victor Oladipo’s 3-pointer at the end of Game 7 of Pacers-Cavaliers didn’t help Indiana win the series (they lost Game 7 by 4) but it helped Pacer backers win their bets. Most sports books opened Game 7 with the Cavaliers as 6.5-point favorites and closed at either 5 or 5.5.

“It was probably a swing of $3 million to $5 million in Nevada. These types of things happen five or more times a week in our industry, whether it’s a two-run home run to cover the run line in the bottom of the ninth or an empty-net goal in the last minute of an NHL game.”
Johnny Avello, head of race and sportsbook for the Wynn in Las Vegas

          12) Review of 40 notable mock drafts by the Arizona Cardinals’ PR guy shows average of 1st round “hits” (right player/right team) was just 3/32; average of the previous five years was 4.2.

For second straight year, NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah led these mock drafters with 8 hits.

          11) Tough times for the Dodgers: Dodgers’ SS Corey Seager will have Tommy John surgery, is out for the season. Yasiel Puig is on the DL after getting hurt running into the wall in San Francisco Saturday. Rich Hill is on the DL with a cracked fingernail, which is a big deal if the nail is on your pitching hand.

          10) Manny Machado is making $16M this season and the Orioles are terrible; he’ll be a free agent after this season. Would the Dodgers trade for Machado to fill Seager’s spot?

          9) In 1983, Palace Station Casino in Las Vegas put up a 126-foot tall sign that contained 9,280 individual lamps; they started taking that sign down Monday, as part of a $192M project to modernize the Palace Station. Hopefully they keep the good Subway sub shop in their sportsbook.

          8) Veteran NBA player Ener Kanter said at the start of his N.B.A. career in 2011, he swore at referees, but exclusively in Turkish, his native tongue. He went his entire first season without referees calling a technical on him- he’s had 15 technicals since- “I should’ve stuck with Turkish,” was how Kanter described those.

At the start of this year’s NBA postseason, 62 foreign-born players from 33 countries were on playoff rosters.

          7) Red Sox (Xander Bogaerts) hit their 6th grand slam of the season last night; 14 teams haven’t hit one yet this season.

          6) Leading money winners on the PGA Tour this season:
          1) Justin Thomas $5,221,300 2) Bubba Watson $3,690,454 3) Patrick Reed $3,580,252

          5) Leading money winners on the Senior Golf Tour this year:
          1) Steve Stricker $630,235 2) Jerry Kelly $539,890 3) Vijay Singh $500,380

          4) High school basketball star Romeo Lankford will stay close to home and go to Indiana this fall; the hoopla surrounding his announcement was ludicrous, with roughly 4,000 people in his high school gym for the event.

Lankford is a 6-5 guard who was listed as the #6 HS prospect in this year’s class, but he was the best prospect who had to yet to commit. This is the first time since 2007 that the Hoosiers signed up the top-ranked senior from Indiana.

          3) An authenticated signed Sandy Koufax jersey that he wore pitching for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1956 was sold for $414,279 at a recent auction.

          2) Cubs 3, Rockies 2— Chicago won its last five games, allowing total of four runs.

1— Guy named Joe Ganim is the mayor of Bridgeport, CT; never heard of him until just now, but he wants to enter the Democratic primary to be governor of Connecticut. He’s been elected mayor of Bridgeport five times, with a little break in between.

The “little break” in between was a 7-year federal prison sentence; from his Wikipedia page:

“On March 19, 2003, Ganim was convicted of 16 federal counts: one count each of racketeering, extortion, racketeering conspiracy and bribery; two counts of bribery conspiracy; eight counts of mail fraud and two counts of filing a false tax return.”

Would you vote for this guy to be governor of your state? Good grief.

          • Giants ace Madison Bumgarner could begin throwing soon
            April 30, 2018

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Hoping for clearance to begin a throwing program, San Francisco Giants ace Madison Bumgarner is headed to Arizona to meet with the same doctor who performed surgery on his left pinkie.

Bumgarner was scheduled to leave the Bay Area on Monday night for a checkup with Dr. Donald Sheridan, who inserted three pins into Bumgarner's pitching hand one day after the 2014 World Series MVP was hit by a line drive late in spring training.

If Bumgarner is cleared to start throwing, the four-time All-Star is still likely a month away from rejoining the big league club.

The Giants also said second baseman Joe Panik underwent surgery on the ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb and will miss at least six weeks. Panik had flown to Los Angeles to get a second opinion before opting for surgery.

It was the latest blow to the injury-ravaged Giants this season.

Left fielder Hunter Pence is rehabbing from a sprained right thumb. Pence's replacement, slugger Mac Williamson, is going through the concussion protocol. San Francisco closer Mark Melancon is slowly working his way back from a right elbow flexor strain. Relief pitchers Josh Osich (right hip strain) and Will Smith (Tommy John surgery) are also on the disabled list, though Smith is expected to come off this week.

Right-hander Jeff Samardzija was scheduled to make his third start of the season Monday after beginning the year on the DL with a pectoral strain.

                      • Books adjust to Cubbies
                        May 1, 2018

What Has Gotten In To The Cubs?

The Chicago Cubs will forever be entrenched as one of America’s sweethearts, so every time you can the sportsbook at BetOnline.ag there’s no doubt you always take a look. But baseball heads who have been with us since opening day know that the Cubbies have been as unbettable as they come. A really rough start, however, has been overcome and the Chicago’s better team faces a patty cake schedule that’s made more attractive given their current hot streak.

At just +67 above the moneyline, the Cubs are just floating in good favor but things are about to get a whole lot easier. With the Rockies currently on tap, and a momentum churning sweep of the Brewers (who the Cubs routinely dominate), Chicago is rolling in to one of the softer part of their schedule against teams that roughly equate to a .500 opponent in the aggregate.

Chicago is 16-10 as of this writing, and thanks to a 3-2 win over Colorado on Monday night. The problem is that despite some early woes, the oddsmakers have not cooled the juice on the Cubs overall. They’re currently heading in to their next game against the lowly Rockies as -157 favorites with Hendricks taking the mound.

Next Games: vs. Colorado (5/1), vs. Colorado (5/2), at St. Louis (5/4-5/6), vs. Miami (5/7-5/9)

The 28-year old Hendricks (who looks like he’s 58 years old) is 2-1 SU in 5 starts this year with a 3.10 ERA and 24 strikeouts. Overall he’s been solid simply because Chicago has found a groove thanks to some terrific infield defence. Hendricks is matched up the uncomfortably vulnerable Jon Gray, who is just 2-4 SU in 6 starts with a 5.79 ERA.

The thing about baseball moneyline odds is that they’re only really valuable if they pan out, and Hendricks has a great matchup for you to gamble on with a strong enough number to make money off of no matter how heavy you lean. And this is the extra part about Chicago’s success – they’re one of those teams that just happens to be good at creating point differential.

The Cubs have gone a dazzling 8-2 SU and 5-5 ATS in their last 10 games. If you’re willing to take the runline against with this team then you’re a braver man than I, but there’s logic in it. Chicago’s batting order has been obnoxiously consistent despite a lack of deep threats. This roster ranks just 25th in the majors in regards to dingers, and are a laughable base stealing team with just 6 on the season (29th overall).

Where they make up for this is with remarkably efficient hitting. Their .746 OPS is ranked 8th in the majors right now, and it’s complimented by the 5th best scoring average where Chicago brings home 5.12 runners per game. Leading the way is – no duh – Kris Bryant, who is batting .291 on the season.

On the flip side, the pitching hasn’t been outstanding, but the defence has been unreal. Chicago ranks 4th in team ERA, a notable MLB betting stat, and are one of the best teams in terms of quality starts (13 total, 8th overall) because of guys like Hendricks, Darvish and the heroic Jon Lester. It’s not a world beating set, but it’s really competitive and the team surrounding them does so many good things in the infield that it balances out their defensive assault.

Teams that do the little things well always present value, and the Cubbies do everything well except the stuff that jumps off the page. They’re not a great base running team, and are a horrible home run hitting team overall. Shutouts are hard to come by because the pitching staff is still vulnerable. So why bother?

Chicago is a grinder’s bet, meaning that they’re not going to be a hot hand but what I absolutely love about them is that they are in a horrifically weak division. The Pirates are coming back to earth, the Brewers never play well against them, the Cardinals are a walking joke and the Reds are one of the worst teams in the league (sorry, Joey). A daily play on them in the right spots will help sustain your winning MLB plays throughout the year.

After a rough start, now’s the time to get back on the wagon of the Chicago Cubs. I’m not entirely sold on them as World Series contenders just yet but their -140 odds to win the otherwise pathetic NL Central are golden odds. Get on board, take the lumps and enjoy the rest of the very profitable ride.

It’s time to invest in the Cubs, and they won’t stop being a good bet until otherwise stated.

                        • May Pitchers Report
                          May 1, 2018

The call to the post in the month of May signals the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. For baseball purists, May is simply the 2nd full month of the season as we head toward the sweltering days of summer. And for die-hard baseball fans that enjoy handicapping America’s pastime, it also signals the arrival of our annual May Good Month/Bad Month pitchers report.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of May. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in May, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts.

To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each May over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s May list.

                          GOOD MONTH PITCHERS

                          *Cueto, Johnny - 11-5 (5-1 H)

Johnny Cueto has been pitching all season like its May after an incredible start. As this month begins he a 0.86 ERA and otherworldly WHIP of 0.69. Opponents are batting just .150 against him. Cueto's deceptive deliveries and various arm angles are working magically thus far.

                          *Greinke, Zack - 11-4 (4-1 A)

In spite of how well Arizona has started the season, Greinke's been more inconsistent than normal. More than anything, he's left too many pitches in the zone, giving up too many base-knocks and home runs. Let's see if the right-hander finds his usual rhythm this month.

                          *Kershaw, Clayton - 13-3 (8-1 H)

Though Kershaw has not walked many batters, he's missed his spots which has hurt him. He's set such a high standard it's almost impossible to maintain and his velocity has dipped now in his 10th season. Still, he's still Kershaw and once the slider and curveball are back hitting their marks, watch the W's start piling up.

                          McCullers Jr., Lance - 9-4 (5-1 A)

Other than one start, McCullers Jr. has been in great form so far in 2018. His curveball is a work of art and among the best in the majors. His tendency to get hurt is what is holding him back from becoming next level hurler. If the hook and the fastball are on, he is one tough customer.

                          *Price, David - 10-3 (5-0 H)

Price's days as a top notch starter appear over, but he can still be a very good pitcher. His command of the fastball is what's changed (along with lower velocity), which makes his breaking pitches and off-speed stuff more of a focus for hitters. Nevertheless, when Price is right (sorry about that), he's more than capable of stringing a groups of victories together.

                          Strasburg, Stephen 12-4 (6-2 A)

Like his team, Strasburg has been up and down in the early part of the season. What has really hurt him is fat tosses in the zone, with seven balls flying over the fence already, after conceding an average of 14 per year since 2015. Just like the Nationals, it's just a matter of time before Strasburg is back in the groove.

                          *Sale, Chris - 13-4 (7-2 H A)

Unquestionably one of the premier pitchers in baseball who has gotten smarter in trying to work deeper into games and pitch to more contact. That does not mean the big lefty cannot dial it up and punch-out a hitter when needed. Sale’s just figured out how to be more valuable to his team.

                          BAD MONTH PITCHERS

                          *Cashner, Andrew - 5-10 (2-8 A)

In the world of baseball betting, this is one of our favorite hurlers. Time and again oddsmakers consider his stuff rather than how he actually pitches. For every two OK starts are three lousy one's, which helps to explain his team's 51-76 record in his starts since 2013 and why Cashner is 43-68 lifetime.

                            May 1, 2018

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                            GOT YOUR NUMBER

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw (1-4, 2.84 ERA) tries to slow down A.J. Pollock and the first-place Diamondbacks (20-8) in Arizona. Pollock hit three home runs Monday night during an 8-5 victory in the series opener as the Diamondbacks won for the 12th time in the last 13 regular-season meetings between the NL West rivals - six of seven this year. In the 2017 playoffs, the Dodgers cruised to a three-game sweep of Arizona, but they've had trouble with Pollock this season. He had a two-homer game at Dodger Stadium on April 14 and is batting .361 with five home runs, 10 RBIs and 10 runs scored in his last nine games. To make matters worse for the injury-depleted Dodgers (12-16), the defending NL champions just learned star shortstop Corey Seager will have season-ending Tommy John surgery this week.

                            GROUNDED IN HOUSTON

Didi Gregorius and the powerful Yankees have been putting up big offensive numbers - except against the World Series champion Astros. New York has lost seven straight in Houston including the postseason, scoring no more than one run in each of its last six games there. This time, the Bronx Bombers face Justin Verlander (4-0, 1.36 ERA), who is 9-0 in 11 regular-season starts for the Astros dating to last year. Charlie Morton pitched Houston to a 2-1 victory in the series opener Monday, stopping New York's nine-game winning streak in the first meeting between the teams since Morton won 4-0 in Game 7 of last year's AL Championship Series.

                            CHECKUP

Hoping for clearance to begin a throwing program, Giants ace Madison Bumgarner traveled to Arizona to see the doctor who performed surgery on his broken left pinkie. Dr. Donald Sheridan inserted three pins into Bumgarner's pinkie after the 2014 World Series MVP was hit by a line drive late in spring training. Even if Bumgarner is cleared to start throwing, the four-time All-Star is still likely a month away from rejoining the big league club. San Francisco also will be without Joe Panik for at least six weeks after the second baseman had surgery on his left thumb.

                            CALENDAR CLUB

Xander Bogaerts and the major league-leading Red Sox (21-7) look for a smooth start to May after ending April with a bang. Bogaerts hit a grand slam over the Green Monster and out of Fenway Park on Monday night as Boston beat Kansas City 10-6 to finish with 19 wins in April, a franchise record for that month. It was Boston's sixth slam this season, tying the 1996 Montreal Expos for the most ever by May 1. The Red Sox didn't even hit one last season.

                            STINGY STAFF

Kyle Hendricks (2-1, 3.10 ERA) tries to extend Chicago's five-game winning streak when the Cubs host Nolan Arenado and the Colorado Rockies at Wrigley Field. Cubs starters have gone 33 2/3 straight innings without giving up an earned run, the longest streak for the team since at least 1974. It's the longest stretch in the majors since Washington's rotation had a streak of 47 1/3 innings in June 2015. Chicago pitchers have permitted only four runs and 21 hits during the last five games.

                            ACES UP

Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer (5-1, 1.62 ERA) starts for Washington, while Noah Syndergaard (2-0, 2.86 ERA) gets the ball for the New York Mets, Chris Sale (2-1, 2.31) is on the mound for Boston, Chris Archer (2-1, 6.61) goes for Tampa Bay, and Felix Hernandez (3-2, 4.96) pitches for Seattle.

                              • Moved to top of order, slumping Harper homers for Nationals
                                May 2, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) Slumping Bryce Harper was moved to the leadoff spot for the first time since 2013 and responded with a three-run homer that helped Max Scherzer win his fifth straight start as the Washington Nationals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-4 Wednesday night.

Harper entered in a 5-for-35 slump and had not gotten an extra-base hit since April 16. He grounded out in the first inning against Chad Kuhl (3-2), followed Wilmer Difo's go-ahead homer in the third with a flyout, then gave the Nationals a 5-0 lead in the fifth with his ninth homer this season.

Scherzer (6-1) allowed two runs and three hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out eight and walked one.

HOUSTON (AP) - Gary Sanchez hit a three-run homer in the ninth off Ken Giles (0-1), who punched himself on the face and chin when he walked to the dugout after he was knocked out later in the inning, then threw a bat in the dugout and kicked it. New York won for the ninth time in 10 games.

Yankees starter Jordan Montgomery was removed after one inning and seven pitches because of tightness in his left elbow and will return to New York on Wednesday to be examined.

Justin Verlander allowed tied a career-high by striking out 14 and allowed just three hits - all singles - in eight innings.

Domingo German, who could take over Montgomery's starting spot, scattered four hits over four innings, and David Robertson (2-1) pitched around Jose Altuve's two-out single in the eighth.
