You can wager on where players will be taken in the NFL Draft Thursday:

      — Baker Mayfield, under 6.5 (-$120)

      — Bradley Chubb, under 5.5 (-$180)

      — Calvin Ridley 19.5

      Quotes of the Day
“I didn’t look at their playbook as much as I should have. It could have gone a little bit better … but at the same time, I’m prioritizing which playbooks I’m going to learn. No offense to them, but I’ve got a lot on my plate.”
Baker Mayfield, talking about his meeting with the Chargers

“I’m probably not prepared to comment on that. My plate’s pretty full. No offense……”
Chargers’ GM Tom Telesco, when asked about Mayfield’s comment

      Wednesday’s quiz
What two teams did Didi Gregorius play for before coming to New York?

      Tuesday’s quiz
NHL team that used to play in Quebec City was called the Nordiques.

      Monday’s quiz
Oakland is the only current major league baseball team that shares its stadium with an NFL team.

      **********************

      Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

      13) First round draft picks in the last five NFL Drafts:
      SEC 50, ACC 30, Pac-12 29, Big 14 21, Big X 11.

      12) The definition of tone deaf:

Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said Tuesday that Rogers Centre in Toronto is in need of an update. The downtown stadium has been the Blue Jays’ home since 1989.

Not sure if Mr Manfred ever watches CNN, but there was a tragedy in Toronto yesterday, with a van killing ten people in an apparent act of terrorism. I’m guessing that today wasn’t the best time to be asking for improvements to the city’s domed stadium.

      11) 76ers 104, Heat 91— Philly is on to the second round for first time since 2012.

      10) UCLA QB Josh Rosen has good bloodlines for athletic success; his father Charles was a nationally ranked ice skater who nearly qualified for the Olympics in the 1970s; his mother, Liz, was captain of the Princeton lacrosse team.

      9) Mets’ SS Amed Rosario got his 4th walk of the season last night, in his 67th plate appearance; last year, he had three walks in 170 PAs.

      8) Big 14 is already moving to 20 conference games next basketball season. ACC will do the same in 2019-20. Now the Pac-12 might go to 20 league games, too. This will hurt mid-majors trying to get an at large NCAA bid- extra conference games will raise teams’ power ratings.

      7) Reds 9, Braves 7 (12)— Atlanta scored four runs in 9th inning to tie game, but Scooter Gennett sent everyone home happy with a walk-off homer in the 12th inning.

      6) Golfer Matt Kuchar has made 28 consecutive cuts, longest current streak on the PGA Tour.

      5) There have been 77 home runs hit into McCovey Cove behind the RF fence at Giants’ Pac-Bell ballpark in San Francisco; 35 of those were hit by Barry Bonds.

      4) Houston Rockets led 50-49 at halftime in Minnesota Monday night, then outscored the Timberwolves 50-20 in the 3rd quarter, as they took a 3-1 series lead. It was only the second time ever a team had a +30 quarter in a playoff game.

      3) I wonder if someday baseball will go to flat bases, like we used to have in kickball when we were kids. Two reasons:
      a) Players sometimes turn an ankle stepping on a base, especially if it is raining.
      b) Once in a great while, batted balls hit a base and provide a lucky hit.

Not saying I would endorse that, but could see it happening.

      2) 236 players declared as early-entrants for the NBA Draft, 181 from colleges; those who did not sign with an agent can still go back to college. There are only 60 picks in the NBA Draft, so do the math. Salary in the G-League is $35,000 a year, about the same as tuition for a year in college. Some kids have some very interesting choices to make.

      1) I have no sympathy for guys who are eligible for the NBA or NFL Draft who fail a drug test before the draft. You’re on the verge of getting a job that potentially can pay you millions of dollars; you KNOW you’re going to get drug tested. You KNOW it!!!

A wide receiver from Florida failed a drug test at the NFL Combine. At the freakin’ Combine? Not good.

      • LEADING OFF: Cobb faces ex-Tampa Bay pals, Kershaw is 1-3
        April 24, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:
        ---

        REMEMBER HIM?

The Tampa Bay Rays face former teammate Alex Cobb when they play at Camden Yards. They had been set to meet up Tuesday night, but the game in Baltimore was rained out. The 30-year-old Cobb spent his entire career with the Rays before joining the Orioles in late March. Over six years with Tampa Bay, the right-hander was 48-35 and one of the leaders of the staff.

Cobb signed a $57 million, four-year deal with Baltimore. He got off to a late start because he missed most of spring training, and since his return has gone 0-2 with a 15.43 ERA.

        LOOKS ODD

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw has a 2.45 ERA after five starts, not far off his career mark of 2.36. But his won-loss record this season looks unusual - he's 1-3. The three-time NL Cy Young Award winner was a combined 67-18 over the previous four years. He'll try to get back in the victory column when he starts against Miami at Dodger Stadium.

        NEED A DOME!

There have been 28 postponements this season in the majors, the most related to weather through April since the commissioner's office started keeping those records in 1986.

The Detroit-Pittsburgh game was rained out Tuesday night, forcing a doubleheader at PNC Park. It will be the second time they've played a twinbill this year against each other after wintry weather pushed back opening day at Comerica Park on March 29 and caused another matchup to be called off.

The Cubs and Indians played through steady rain Tuesday night in Cleveland. The wet weather intensified throughout the game, leaving puddles in the infield and causing Chicago reliever Steve Cishek to slip on the mound several times.

        STRONG STARTS

Justin Verlander (3-0, 1.10 ERA) makes his sixth start of the season when Houston hosts the Angels. ... Max Scherzer (4-1, 1.36 ERA), winner of the last two NL Cy Young Awards, pitches at San Francisco. ... Phillies newcomer Jake Arrieta (2-0, 2.04 ERA) faces Arizona star Zack Greinke at Citizens Bank Park.

        GRAY AREA

Yankees right-hander Sonny Gray (1-1, 8.27 ERA) has totaled just 16 1/3 innings in four starts this season. He'll aim to add a little length when he pitches against Minnesota at Yankee Stadium.

HOUSTON (AP) Justin Verlander pitched seven sharp innings, AL MVP Jose Altuve hit his first home run of the season and the Houston Astros beat the Angels 5-2 on Wednesday, ending Los Angeles' road winning streak at a team record-tying 11.

Albert Pujols connected off Verlander for his 619th career homer. Pujols has 2,994 hits.

Alex Bregman hit a three-run double and Jake Marisnick homered as Houston avoided a three-game sweep. The Angels also won 11 straight road games in 1988.

Verlander (4-0) held the Angels hitless into the fifth inning before Zack Cozart singled with two outs. Verlander gave up two runs and four hits, striking out nine without a walk. Verlander won his 11th regular-season decision in a row, dating to mid-August last year, before the Detroit traded him to Houston. Ken Giles pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.

Nick Tropeano (1-2) retired the first 11 batters he faced, striking out six.

                      NATIONALS 15, GIANTS 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Trea Turner got five hits, Matt Adams homered and drove in six runs, and the Washington broke out of an offensive funk in a big way, routing San Francisco to end a four-game slid.

The Nationals had totaled just eight runs during their skid. Andrew Stevenson had two doubles, two singles and four RBIs as Washington set season highs for runs and hits (18).

Manager Dave Martinez's ballclub has been stunted by a rash of injuries this season but salvaged the final game of the three-game series at AT&T Park series to end a rough 4-5 trip. Max Scherzer (5-1) did his part, striking out 10 in six innings.

Turner came into the game batting .232, and the leadoff man's slow start had contributed to the Nationals' struggles. He raised his batting average 35 points, tying a career high for hits in a game. He also scored twice, drove in two runs and stole his 10th base this season.

Adams matched his career best for RBIs. He singled as part of a three-run first, put the Nationals up 6-1 with a three-run homer off Jeff Samardzija (1-1) in the fourth and added a two-run single in the eighth. The Nationals scored 14 of their 15 runs with two outs.

                      TIGERS 13, PIRATES 10, 1ST GAME

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Nicholas Castellanos had four hits and a key home run and Detroit used 20 hits to outslug Pittsburgh in the opener of a doubleheader.

The teams combined for 34 hits, including four from Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera and three from Jeimer Candelario. Castellanos was coming off consecutive three-hit games against Kansas City. He's 10 for 15 with two homers and nine RBIs in Detroit's last three games, and he's batting .337 for the season.

Candelario homered, doubled and scored five runs. Leonys Martin led off the game with his third home run of the season, and James McCann also went deep as the Tigers won for the sixth time in eight games.

Pittsburgh's Francisco Cervelli had three hits and a career-high six RBIs, including a three-run homer in the third inning. His two-run double in the eight pulled the Pirates to 12-10.

Corey Dickerson also had three hits for Pittsburgh, and Colin Moran homered.

Daniel Stumpf (1-0) retired all four batters he faced for his first major league win. Shane Greene pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth save in six opportunities. Jameson Taillon (2-2) was the loser.

                      MARINERS 4, WHITE SOX 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Mike Zunino homered and scored twice to back Seattle starter Felix Hernandez.

Zunino doubled and scored in a two-run third and gave the Mariners a 4-3 lead with a solo drive to right against James Shields in the sixth. Nelson Cruz added three hits and two RBIs.

Hernandez (3-2) settled down after a shaky start, scattering three runs and seven hits over six innings. The 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner struck out six and walked two. James Pazos and Juan Nicasio each worked a perfect inning, and Edwin Diaz tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his 10th save.

Shields (1-3) went six innings, allowing four runs and six hits. Chicago's Yoan Moncada hit his first career leadoff homer. At 5-16, the White Sox are off to their worst start since 1950.

                      ROCKIES 5, PADRES 2

DENVER (AP) - Jon Gray struck out 11 in six dominant innings and David Dahl lined a two-run triple, lifting Colorado past San Diego.

Gray (2-4) allowed three hits and walked one to break his three-game slide. The right-hander had at least one strikeout in every inning before being lifted for a pinch-hitter after throwing 101 pitches.

Reliever Bryan Shaw allowed a run in the seventh, and Wade Davis another during a shaky ninth in a nonsave situation. Davis fanned Manuel Margot to end the game and help the Rockies take two of three from San Diego. It was their first home series win of the season.

Tyson Ross (2-2) allowed four runs in four innings and struck out seven as he dropped to 0-6 lifetime at Coors Field.

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

                          13) Here are record of major league teams with best/worst records in games where winning run scores after the 6th inning:

Best: Mets 8-2, Blue Jays 6-1, Phillies 7-2, Rockies 4-0
                          Worst: Bronx 0-5, Indians 1-5, Nationals 1-5, Padres 1-5

                          12) Mentioned yesterday how 181 college players declared early for an NBA Draft where only 60 players will be taken. Last year, 137 players declared early.

                          11) Thing is, if he didn’t hire an agent, the player who declares can go thru workouts, get an evaluation, then drop out of the draft if he isn’t going to be drafted as high as he would like and go back to college— its a no-lose situation for the player, which is why lot of guys do it.

                          10) In last five NFL Drafts, only three teams haven’t drafted a player who has made at least one Pro Bowl; Bills, Broncos, Colts.

                          9) Braves called up prize prospect Ronald Acuna Tuesday night; he was 11 for his last 33 in AAA ball.

                          8) When Marlins’ OF Cameron Maybin was a kid in Asheville, NC, he had an excellent summer job one year. He was batboy for the Asheville Tourists of the South Atlantic League, the same team Crash Davis wound up playing for at the end of the classic movie, Bull Durham.

                          7) Baltimore Orioles are off to an awful 6-17 start; their starting pitching is suspect, and it could be a long year at Camden Yards. Without starting pitching, you have no chance to compete.

From 2013-16, Baltimore hurler Chris Tillman was 56-30 with a 3.62 ERA, a good pitcher. Things have changed.

Since May 24, 2017, in 19 starts, Tillman is 1-11, 9.35. Is he hurt? Is he tipping his pitches? Something is amiss.

                          6) Richmond Spiders had a QB named Kyle Lauletta, who may or may not be drafted tonight; watching some clips of him, one thing is very obvious; Richmond’s football team has great helmets- that spider logo looks tremendous on a helmet, either dark blue or white.

                          5) Former Vikings’ coach Brad Childress will be head coach, Michael Vick offensive coordinator of the Atlanta team in the new AAF, a spring football league that starts next year.

                          4) According to Ian O’Connor of ESPN.com, Josh Rosen went to the Manning Passing Academy in Louisiana in 2016 and did not make a favorable impression while there.

Manning Passing Academy bills itself as “…..the premier offensive football skills camp in the nation for QBs, RBs, WRs, and TEs.”

Friend of mine’s son went there 15 or so years ago; former LSU/Patriots’ QB Tom Hodson was his camp counselor.

                          3) I have two friends who know more about football than any of my other friends; one says Josh Rosen is the best QB in the draft, the other says Baker Mayfield, so go figure.

                          2) Clemson QB Deshaun Watson was the 12th pick in last year’s NFL Draft; I will predict right here that none of the QB’s in this year’s draft will be as good as Watson. Teams messed up last year when they dismissed Watson.

                          1) President Macron of France is 39 years old; his wife just turned 65.

When Macron was 15, he was a student and Brigitte Trogneux was a 40-year old teacher at La Providence, a private school in Amiens, northern France. At the time, she was married with three kids.

In this country, the scandalous affair that followed would have been serious trouble for Ms Trogneaux, who is now Mrs Macron. Not so in France.

In today’s world, it is just another day, another weird day.

                          • LEADING OFF: Indians' Miller out, Cubs' Bryant could return
                            April 26, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

                            AILING

Cleveland reliever Andrew Miller could miss a few days because of a hamstring injury. The left-hander grabbed the back of his leg after throwing two pitches to the Cubs' Anthony Rizzo on Wednesday night. The Indians said he had tightness in the hamstring and would have an MRI.

''He's had it before,'' manager Terry Francona said. ''The hope is, I think last time he said it was 3-4 days. That would really be the hope. We'll know a lot more tomorrow. And hopefully, that's all it is.''

                            BRYANT RECOVERS

Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant has been out of the lineup two straight games, the result of being hit in the helmet by a pitch over the weekend in Colorado. Manager Joe Maddon said the 2016 NL MVP has been checked by doctors and could return for the opener of a four-game series against Milwaukee at Wrigley Field.

''He's fine,'' Maddon said. ''I'd be surprised if it took a turn in the other direction.''

                            WELCOME BACK

Jonny Venters did well in his return to the majors after overcoming four major elbow surgeries. Pitching for Tampa Bay in his first big league appearance since the 2012 NL wild-card game, the 33-year-old lefty faced one batter Wednesday night and retired Chris Davis on a grounder. The Rays called up Venters before the game. The former NL All-Star has had three Tommy John surgeries.

''Oh man, it was an amazing experience, just to get out there on a big league mound in a big league game,'' he said. ''To be able to get an out and help this team win, it was a special thing that I'll never forget the rest of my life.''

                            HOMER AT HOME

Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius has homered in four straight games and leads the majors with 29 RBIs. All nine of his home runs this season have come at Yankee Stadium. He can add to that total when New York finishes up a series against Minnesota.

                            SMOOTH SAILING

The Red Sox try for their 19th win, which would set a team record for victories before May 1. They got a head start this year when Major League Baseball opened the season on March 29.

Boston ace Chris Sale looks to improve on his 4-1 record with a 0.96 ERA in seven appearances at Toronto. Leadoff man Mookie Betts has hit six home runs in his last seven games.
