      • Didi hits 2 HRs, Stanton hitless vs Marlins, Yanks romp 12-1
        April 16, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) Didi Gregorius homered twice for the second time this season, Gary Sanchez had three hits and three RBIs, and the New York Yankees romped to a 12-1 victory over Derek Jeter's Miami Marlins on Monday night.

The only Yankees bopper who didn't join the hit parade was Giancarlo Stanton, who went hitless and got booed again by the hometown fans in his first game against his former team.

Aaron Judge became the fastest major leaguer to hit 60 career homers, and Gregorius finished with three RBIs. New York scored in each of the first five innings and built an 11-0 lead for Luis Severino (3-1), who allowed one hit in six scoreless innings and struck out eight.

Judge hit his fourth home run this season and reached 60 in 197 games, five fewer than Mark McGwire.

Jeter did not attend the game, the first between the teams since the former Yankees captain became Marlins CEO last October.

Stanton went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts, a bases-loaded foulout, a walk and was hit by a pitch. The four-time All-Star, two-time NL home run champion and reigning NL MVP was dealt to the Yankees in December as part of a Jeter-directed payroll purge.

Caleb Smith (0-2), who pitched in nine games for the Yankees last year, needed 42 pitches to get the first three outs and lasted just 2 1/3 innings.

        NATIONALS 8, METS 6

Bryce Harper hit a startling, broken-bat homer early, then grounded a key single during a six-run surge in the eighth inning that sent Washington past New York.

The Nationals rallied against five pitchers in their big burst, winning for just the fourth time in 13 games. The Mets had been off to the best start in franchise history behind the top bullpen in the majors before collapsing.

Trailing 6-1, Washington combined five hits, three walks and a hit batter to take the lead.

Harper's two-run single off Jerry Blevins made it 6-3. Wilmer Difo tied it with a two-out, two-run single off Jeurys Familia, and Michael A. Taylor drew a bases-loaded walk from the Mets closer for the go-ahead run.

Howie Kendrick added a solo homer in the ninth.

Harper's major league-leading eighth home run was a show of shear power and strength. His bat broke into two pieces, but the ball still flew an estimated 406 feet to right-center field.

Harper connected for a solo drive in the first inning off Jacob deGrom, who struck out 12 in 7 1/3 innings, the longest outing by a Mets pitcher this season. He left with two on, one out and a five-run lead.

A.J. Cole (1-1) got the win despite giving up Asdrubal Cabrera's two-run homer in the seventh that made it 6-1. Ryan Madson earned his second save.

AJ Ramos (0-1) took the loss.

        RAYS 8, RANGERS 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Mallex Smith had four hits and Blake Snell struck out nine to help Tampa Bay stop a four-game losing streak.

Smith bunted for a single against Martin Perez (1-2) in a four-run second inning that gave the Rays a 5-0 lead. He doubled and scored in the third on his way to a second four-hit game in eight days.

Snell (2-1) gave up one run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Joey Gallo became the first left-handed hitter to homer against Snell, who has made 47 career starts. Nomar Mazara added a three-run shot in the eighth.

Wilson Ramos had three hits for the Rays and drove in two runs. C.J. Cron and Daniel Robertson homered for Tampa Bay. Perez gave up seven earned runs and 10 hits in four innings.

        ROCKIES 6, PIRATES 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Trevor Story drilled a three-run home run, German Marquez pitched six effective innings and Colorado kept its road surge going.

Story bounced back from a miserable series in Washington by going 2 for 3 and driving in three runs, all of them coming when he sent a pitch from Steven Brault (2-1) into the bleachers in left field with one out in the fourth at frigid and blustery PNC Park to break open a close game.

Charlie Blackmon added his team-leading seventh home run of the season for Colorado. The Rockies have won five of six overall and are 8-2 in their last 10 games away from Coors Field.

Marquez (1-1) held the Pirates without a hit until a one-out triple by Francisco Cervelli in the fifth. He left after six innings, giving up two runs, two hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

        BRAVES 2, PHILLIES 1

ATLANTA (AP) - Julio Teheran outpitched Aaron Nola for a rare night of success at SunTrust Park and Atlanta snapped Philadelphia's six-game winning streak.

Teheran (1-1) allowed one run, five hits and three walks with nine strikeouts in six innings. He began the night 3-10 with a 6.20 ERA and 21 homers allowed in 19 starts at the Braves' second-year stadium, but Teheran kept the Phillies guessing with a tough slider.

Atlanta became the last team in the majors to record a save as closer Arodys Vizcaino ended it on Carlos Santana's groundout.

Nola (1-1) gave up four hits, two runs and two walks in six innings. The Phillies' 24-year-old ace struck out two.

        REDS 10, BREWERS 4

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Billy Hamilton drove in three runs and Cincinnati ended an eight-game losing streak.

The Reds won for just the third time in 16 games this season. Cincinnati is tied with Kansas City for the fewest wins in the majors. Joey Votto had an RBI double for his first extra-base hit of the season.

Cincinnati starter Luis Castillo (1-2) shut out the Brewers for six innings before allowing four runs in the seventh.

Milwaukee starter Brent Suter (1-2) allowed three runs and six hits over five innings and struck out four.

          • Tuesday’s 6-pack

            — Rockies 6, Pirates 2— Colorado TV guys estimated the crowd for this game at 1,500 on a cold, snowy night.

            — Nationals 8, Mets 6— New York bullpen blew a 6-1, 8th inning lead.

            — Bryce Harper got sawed off on the fists and still hit a HR into the RF bullpen.

            — Heat 113, 76ers 103— Series is now tied 1-1.

            — Big guy Omar Yurtseven transfers from NC State to Georgetown; not good for the Wolfpack.

            — RIP Harry Anderson 65, who played a funny judge on the TV show Night Court for nine years.

            Quote of the Day
“I’d feel a little bit uneasy if I were at the top of this draft and I decided I had to have a quarterback. The pressure to get a quarterback is so great in this league, I get that. But we can’t create ’em. I wouldn’t be surprised if only one of these guys is left standing in four or five years, and if so, I’d guess it would be Sam Darnold.”
            Sean Payton

            Tuesday’s quiz
What state is Vice-President Mike Pence from?

            Monday’s quiz
Bartolo Colon begin his major league career with the Cleveland Indians, in 1997.

            Sunday’s quiz

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…..
            13) Tonight in Oakland, the A’s commemorate the 50th anniversary of their first-ever game in the Oakland Coliseum. Admission is free, place will be packed as the A’s play the White Sox.

50 years ago, the A’s lost 4-1 to Baltimore in their home opener; Rick Monday hit a solo homer for the A’s only run. A pinch-hitter named Tony LaRussa had Oakland’s only other hit.

            12) If I was a D-I college basketball coach, I’d make sure my school offered a course called Financial Literacy, and all my players/support staff would take it.

How to write a check, open a savings account, invest money, divorce laws, child support, stock market- all that stuff would be covered. Every day things you will need whether you play in the NBA or not.

You read about a lot of pro athletes going broke after they’ve made millions and it makes you want to puke. They need to learn how to handle their own money instead of trusting others— in this crazy world of ours, it is a debatable strategy to trust strangers with your money.

            11) Ice problems in Toronto; CN Tower was closed Monday, after reports of ice chunks falling off the tower, endangering buildings and pedestrians.

The roof on Rogers Centre was damaged by falling ice; Royals-Blue Jays game was postponed.

A chunk of ice also flew off the roof of one of the Kansas City Royals’ team buses and broke the windshield of the second bus. One of the players grabbed the wheel of the bus after the driver was hit by a piece of the broken glass.

            10) Nickname of the Day: Teams at the U of Arkansas-Monticello are known as the Boll Weevils.

            9) Arizona Wildcats are hurting for basketball players; they signed 6-6 wing Omar Thielemans from Belgium, who was described this way: “……..is a good athlete who is a “mid-major” level player.” That description came from someone who has seen Thielemans play in Europe, and it didn’t sound like much of an endorsement for a kid headed to the Pac-12.

            8) For the record, the last major league baseball game to have only one hit: Sandy Koufax’s perfect game against the Cubs on September 9, 1965.

Astros-Rangers was headed that way Sunday night; Bartolo Colon was still throwing 92 in the 8th inning, and he is 44 years old.

            7) High school football games in Alabama are going to have instant replay at every game starting this fall. Note to self: Never, ever visit Alabama- it seems like a very strange place.

Even Texas doesn’t have instant replay for high school games; they probably will now.

            6) Sports Illustrated’s Peter King mentioned more than once in his weekly column Monday that the Bills might trade as many as three first-round draft picks to move into the top 4 of the draft next week. If I owned an NFL team that had a top 4 pick, I’d tell my GM to accept any offer of three first round picks in a trade, or else I’d fire him. First round picks are gold.

Say the Browns draft a QB with the first pick, doesn’t matter which one; the Giants take either Barkley or Chubb, and the Jets take the QB they want. Then if I’m the Browns and Buffalo calls and wants to give me three #1 picks for the 4th pick, I’m just fine with that.

            5) Guy I know who knows a lot about the NFL is down on Wyoming QB Josh Allen, and that is being kind. Allen won me a lot of units when I picked Wyoming on this site, but he has to become a more accurate passer and he damn well better learn how to slide when he runs with the ball. I still like him, but the accuracy thing reminds me a little of Jake Locker.

            4) My thought is that FOX should put together a QB classroom TV show like the one Jon Gruden used to do, using Troy Aikman in Gruden’s role. I think he’d be very good at it, and I’d think he’d enjoy doing it.

            3) Baseball injuries:
            — Pirates lost 2B Josh Harrison (broken hand) for six weeks
            — Rays lost OF Kevin Kiermaier (thumb ligaments) for 8-12 weeks

            2) This spring, someone in my fantasy baseball league offered me Aaron Sanchez and Braves’ prospect Ronald Acuna for Giancarlo Stanton— not a strong offer, but Acuna is being touted as God’s gift to baseball and the second coming of Barry Bonds— I declined.

Acuna started the season at AAA Gwinnett so the Braves can keep him under team control for an extra season; as you read this, he is hitting .139 in AAA.

            1) It was windy as hell and raining sideways for the Boston Marathon Monday; too bad. People work so hard to get ready to run the 26-mile marathon. Hell, I get tired driving 26 miles.

            • Red Sox, Angels meet in series of American League's best
              April 17, 2018

The two teams with the best records in the American League will open a three-game series on Tuesday when the Los Angeles Angels host the Boston Red Sox at Angel Stadium.

The Angels (13-3) have won seven straight for the first time since Sept. 22-29, 2015, and are off to their best 16-game start in franchise history.

The Red Sox (13-2) have won 13 of their past 14 for the best start in their 118-year history.

Red Sox left-hander Chris Sale told MLB.com after pitching five innings in a 13-2 victory against the visiting Baltimore Orioles on Sunday that the atmosphere in the clubhouse is enjoyable.

"You can't beat it," he said. "It's coming in, having fun, expecting to win every single day, coming into the clubhouse after the game and the music is playing. You can't beat that. That's what we're looking for. We're going to stay on it and keep doing what we've got to do to maintain that."

The series opener added even more appeal when the series finale between the Angels and Kansas City Royals was postponed on Sunday because of freezing temperatures in Kansas City. Japanese rookie sensation Shohei Ohtani (2-0, 2.08 ERA) was scheduled to start on the mound on Sunday, but instead will face off against Boston left-hander David Price (1-1, 2.40) on Tuesday.

Ohtani, who also serves as a part-time designated hitter, took a perfect game into the seventh inning in his last start April 8 against the visiting Oakland A's. He exited after allowing one hit and one walk in the seventh inning. He finished with 12 strikeouts in the 6-1 victory.

"That's as good a game as you could ever see pitched," Angels manager Mike Scioscia told reporters after the game.

The Angels sold 44,742 tickets for Ohtani's last start on the mound, the most for any regular-season day game since Angel Stadium was downsized 20 years ago.

The Angels currently lead the majors in several offensive categories, including batting average (.291), home runs (26) and OPS (.825).

They'll be up against a starting pitching staff for the Red Sox that's a combined 9-1 with the best ERA in the majors at 2.06.

Price, the 2012 AL Cy Young winner and two-time AL ERA leader, hasn't had as much success against the Angels as he's had against other teams, particularly at Angel Stadium'

He's 5-7 in his career against Los Angeles with a 3.53 ERA. Of the 16 major league teams Price has made at least five starts against, only the Angels and Texas Rangers (5-4) have a winning record against him. Price is 4-5 in 10 career starts at Angel Stadium with a 3.67 ERA.

Price left his last start after one inning on Wednesday because of numbness in his pitching hand. He had allowed four runs and three hits to the New York Yankees, who eventually won 10-7, Boston's only loss since Opening Day.

"I told (manager Alex Cora) I was fine for Monday, or I could come back on Saturday or Sunday, go sit in the pen if needed," Price told WEEI on Friday. "I told him I'd go out there any one. He thought Tuesday would be better weather-wise."

The Red Sox were scheduled to host the Orioles on Monday at Fenway Park, but the game was postponed on Sunday because extended periods of sustained rain were forecasted throughout the day and into the evening.

                      • LEADING OFF: Ohtani day, baseball in San Juan, DH in Toronto
                        April 17, 2018

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                        SHOWTIME

Shohei Ohtani makes his third major league start when the Los Angeles Angels (13-3) host David Price and the Red Sox (13-2) in a marquee matchup between the top two teams in the majors. Ohtani is 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 13 innings on the mound. The two-way rookie sensation from Japan, also batting .367 with three homers and 11 RBIs, had his outing pushed back from Sunday because of a cold-weather postponement in Kansas City. Price (1-1, 2.40) pitches the opener of Boston's nine-game road trip. He left his last start Wednesday after feeling a ''sensation'' in his throwing hand.

                        PUERTO RICO HOMECOMING

The Twins and Indians begin a two-game series in Puerto Rico, a day after several players spent the off day with kids on the storm-ravaged island. Cleveland star Francisco Lindor went back to his first school in his hometown, and Minnesota pitcher Jose Berrios visited a children's hospital in San Juan with many of his teammates. Cleveland ace Corey Kluber (1-1, 1.57 ERA) will face Jake Odorizzi (1-0, 2.20) in the opener at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan.

                        THE CEILING IS THE ROOF

Here's how much all the wintry weather has wreaked havoc with the major league schedule early this season: Even though the Toronto Blue Jays play in a dome, their game against Kansas City was postponed Monday night after chunks of ice crashed down from the nearby CN Tower and punctured the roof at Rogers Centre. Following the first postponement in Toronto since 2001, the teams will play a doubleheader Tuesday. ''If you come to a dome and get banged, something ain't right,'' Royals manager Ned Yost said.

The Blue Jays will be taking the field for the first time since Friday following a pair of postponements at Cleveland last weekend. Cold weather also wiped out Kansas City's scheduled home game Sunday against the Angels - two of six games around the majors to be postponed that day. There were three more postponements Monday.

                        G WHIZ

Nationals lefty Gio Gonzalez pitches at Citi Field, where he's 10-1 with a 1.69 ERA in 15 career starts. He's joked in the past that he looks forward to the tasty Latin food in the clubhouse, likes to see the planes fly overhead and enjoys the ballpark's features. All kidding aside, he says there's no real secret to his success at the Mets' home.

                        HERE'S JOHNNY

Giants right-hander Johnny Cueto (1-0, 0.69 ERA) is expected to come off the disabled list at Arizona. Cueto has been out since spraining his left knee during an indoor workout April 7, slowing a strong start to the season that included seven innings of one-hit ball against the Dodgers on March 30. The Diamondbacks counter with Patrick Corbin (2-0, 2.45), who has 29 strikeouts in 18 1/3 innings this season.

                          • Lindor homers in native Puerto Rico as Indians top Twins 6-1
                            April 17, 2018

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) Francisco Lindor homered in his native Puerto Rico, Corey Kluber allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings and the Cleveland Indians beat the Minnesota Twins 6-1 on Tuesday night in the first regular-season game on the island commonwealth since 2010.

Michael Brantley and Jose Ramirez each had three hits for Cleveland before a sold-out crowd of 19,516 at Hiram Bithorn Stadium. Brantley and Ramirez hit consecutive homers in the sixth, and Yonder Alonso added a solo homer in the eighth.

Kluber (2-1) allowed five hits and struck out six, lowering his ERA to 1.52. Minnesota's Jake Odorizzi (1-1) gave up four runs and six hits in five-plus innings.

                            DIAMONDBACKS 1, GIANTS 0

PHOENIX (AP) - Patrick Corbin lost his no-hit bid on a checked-swing infield single with two outs in the eighth inning but finished a one-hitter to lift Arizona.

Corbin (3-0) walked one but otherwise was cruising toward what would have been the franchise's third no-hitter. Brandon Belt ended it with a softly hit ball to the left side of Arizona's shifted infield, beating shortstop Nick Ahmed's throw by a step to send a groan across Chase Field.

Corbin struck out eight and threw 100 pitches in his first career complete-game shutout. The Diamondbacks have tied the best start in franchise history (with 2000, 2008) at 12-4.

David Peralta lined a run-scoring single off Tony Watson (1-1) in the bottom of the eighth, the deciding blow in a duel between Corbin and San Francisco's Johnny Cueto.

TORONTO (AP) - Luke Maile singled down the right-field line off Brian Flynn (0-1) with the bases loaded in the 10th inning to complete a doubleheader sweep. Toronto has swept all three doubleheaders at its retractable-roof stadium, which opened in 1989. Kansas City has a seven-game losing streak.

Tyler Clippard (2-0) worked a scoreless 10th for his 50th career victory.

In the first game, Yangervis Solarte homered off Erik Skoglund (0-2) in the first inning and drove in four runs, and Randal Grichuk went deep for the second time this season. Jaime Garcia (2-0) gave up three runs and eight hits in five innings.

                            MARLINS 9, YANKEES 1

NEW YORK (AP) - J.T. Realmuto hit a three-run homer off Masahiro Tanaka (2-2) in the fifth inning and drove in four runs in his season debut after coming off the disabled list.

Jarlin Garcia (1-0) gave up one hit in five shutout innings, overcoming five early walks to win for the first time as a starter. Garcia held the New York Mets hitless for six innings last week at home in his first major league start.

Giancarlo Stanton struck out two more times and grounded into a double play, finishing 0 for 4 and drawing boos from Yankees fans again. He is 3 for 35 (.086) with 20 strikeouts at home this season.

                            TIGERS 4, ORIOLES 2

DETROIT (AP) - Victor Martinez homered for the first time since Aug. 18, a two-run drive in the second off Andrew Cashner (1-2), and Detroit stopped a five-game losing streak. Jeimer Candelario hit a tiebreaking triple in the fifth for Detroit.

Francisco Liriano (2-1) allowed two runs and five hits in five innings. Shane Greene pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.

Miguel Cabrera went 0 for 2 with two walks before leaving with back tightness.

Trey Mancini hit a solo homer for the Orioles, who lost their fourth straight.

CHICAGO (AP) - Adam Wainwright (1-2) outpitched Tyler Chatwood in frigid conditions at Wrigley Field, where the gametime temperature was 35 degrees and a 10 mph wind made it feel like 29.

Wainwright allowed an unearned run and four hits as St. Louis won its fifth straight, and he improved to 11-2 in 24 games at Wrigley. Matt Carpenter had two hits and three RBIs.

Chatwood (0-3) issued seven walks in 4 2/3 innings, one off his career high, and yielded two runs and one hit.

                            ROCKIES 2, PIRATES 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Chad Bettis (3-0) allowed five hits in 7 1/3 innings and combined with three relievers on a five-hitter on a snowy night with a first-pitch temperature of 34 degrees. The announced attendance was 8,869, but there appeared to be fewer than 2,000 fans at PNC Park.

Wade Davis pitched a perfect ninth for his NL-leading eighth save and the Rockies improved to 5-1 on a seven-game trip that started in Washington.

Trevor Williams (3-1) gave up two runs and four hits in six innings, pitching in short sleeves. Carlos Gonzalez hit into a run-scoring forceout in the first and rookie Ryan McMahon had an RBI single in the fourth.

                            RANGERS 7, RAYS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Matt Moore (1-3) allowed an unearned run and five hits over seven innings and struck out six in his first start against his former team.

Moore (1-3) went 39-28 with Tampa Bay before being dealt to San Francisco in 2016 and was acquired by Texas in December. Daniel Robertson scored on shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa's throwing error in the third.

Adrian Beltre, Ronald Guzman and Shin-Soo Choo had two RBIs each for the Rangers. Kiner-Falefa had four hits, including a double.

Yonny Chirinos (0-1) gave up six runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.

                            NATIONALS 5, METS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Gio Gonzalez (2-1) allowed two runs in 5 1/3 innings and improved to 11-1 at Citi Field,.

A day after Washington topped the Mets with an eighth-inning rally that overcame a five-run deficit, Bryce Harper put the Nationals ahead early with a sacrifice fly. The Mets, whose 12-3 start had matched the best in team history, lost back-to-back games for the first time under new manager Mickey Callaway.

Trea Turner doubled twice, singled and walked, scoring two runs and stealing his major league-leading eighth base. Sean Doolittle closed for his third save.

Zack Wheeler (1-1) gave up three runs in six innings.

                            BREWERS 2, REDS 0

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Eric Thames hit a two-run homer in the sixth off Sal Romano (0-2).

Dan Jennings (2-0) got one out in the relief of starter Junior Guerra. Josh Hader pitched two innings for his second save, completing a four-pitcher three-hitter.

                            PHILLIES 5, BRAVES 1

ATLANTA (AP) - Rhys Hoskins hit a tiebreaking, two-out, two-run double off Jose Ramirez (0-2) in the 10th and Maikel Franco added another two-run double.

Hector Neris (1-1) pitched a scoreless ninth before 17,913, the second-smallest crowd at 2-year-old SunTrust Park, ahead of only Monday's 17,812.

                                Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

Its easy to shred the Miami Marlins after they traded their whole OF from last year, plus 2B Dee Gordon. A team that went 77-85 last year is off to a 5-12 start this season.

What did the Marlins get back for those four players? Here is a look at the 14 players they got back in their fire sale:

                                13) Players acquired from Bronx for Giancarlo Stanton, a move that was a salary dump:
                                — Starlin Castro 2B— 28-year old major league infielder who has a .282 career BA in nine big league seasons; he is likely to get flipped for more prospects in July. Castro is hitting .295 so far this season.
                                — Jose Devers SS— 18-year old hit .245 in A ball last year; his season hasn’t started yet.
                                — Jorge Guzman P— 22-year old was 5-3, 2.30 in 13 starts in NY-Penn League LY, a Class A short season league. His season hasn’t started yet.

                                12) Players acquired from St Louis for Marcell Ozuna:
                                — Daniel Castano P— 23-year old who is still in A ball— He is 2-0, 4.35 in Florida State League this month; Class A hitters are batting .275 against him.
                                — Zac Gallen P— 22-year old is 1-1, 3.18 in three AAA starts, allowing 23 hits in 17 IP this season.
                                — Sandy Alcantara P— 22-year old is said to be the best prospect Miami landed in these four deals. He is 0-0, 4.82 in two starts (9.1 IP) this season, allowing 8 hits, 8 walks in 9.1 IP, with 12 strikeouts. Alcantara allowed six runs in 8.1 IP in the majors (8 games) last year.
                                — Magneuris Sierra OF— 22-year old is 6-44 (.136) in AAA this season; he was 19-60 (.317) hitting in 22 games with St Louis last season.

                                11) Players acquired from Milwaukee for Christian Yelich:
                                — Iban Diaz 2B— 21-year old hit .222 in A-ball last year; he is off to a 1-24 start in the AA Southern League this year.
                                — Monte Harrison OF— 22-year old is off to a 5-31 (.161) start in AA, wth 16 strikeouts.
                                — Jordan Yamamoto P— 21-year old is heading into his 5th season of A ball; he was 17-19, 4.19 in his first four minor league seasons. Class A hitters have hit .267 against him.
                                — Lewis Brinson OF— 23-year old is hitting .131 for the Marlins this season. He hit .106 in 47 AB’s for Milwaukee last season.

                                10) Players acquired from Seattle for Dee Gordon:
                                — Robert Dugger P— 22-year old is 1-1, 4.91 in two starts in A ball; last year, he was 6-6, 2.75 in 31 games (18 starts) in A ball last year.
                                — Nick Neidert P— 21-year old is 1-0, 5.19 in two AA starts, allowing 14 hits in 8.2 IP. He was 1-3, 6.56 in the AA Texas League last year.
                                — Chris Torres SS— 20-year old hit .248 in three years of A ball; his 4th season of A ball hasn’t started yet.

It is still very early this season and most of these guys are young, but if you were a Marlins’ fan, how many of the 14 players they traded for would make you optimistic for the future?

                                Elsewhere in the world…….
                                9) Reading lot of stuff about Montreal and Portland, OR getting MLB expansion teams, which would put baseball at 32 teams and actually make scheduling easier, with an even amount of teams in both leagues. Wouldn’t have to have interleague games every day.

                                8) Lot of college athletic programs have fundraisers at golf courses; boosters pay to play golf with coaches or former players and programs raise a lot of money that way. UNLV’s football team had one of those this week at Spanish Trail golf course.

Boy, times have changed; back when UNLV basketball was a national power, Jerry Tarkanian wouldn’t hire an assistant coach who owned golf clubs. Seriously.

                                7) Atlanta 2B Ozzie Albies is the youngest player in the major leagues (21 years, 100 days old) and he is a damn good second baseman.

                                6) Mavericks-76ers will play couple of preseason games in China in October; Yale-Stanford will also play in China, in the annual game AliBaba sponsors.

                                5) Marlins 9, New York 1— JT Realmuto comes off the DL and hit a 3-run homer as Miami won in the Bronx. Rookie Jarwin Garcia allowed only one hit in five shutout innings; in his two starts this season, he’s allowed one hit, no runs in 11 IP.

Marlins’ payroll for their Opening Day lineup was $21,092,142.

Giancarlo Stanton is making $25,000,000 this season; he is 3-35 at home. No sympathy for him getting booed at home— he chose to go to New York, as opposed to St Louis/San Francisco.

                                4) Brett Favre tried out for the analyst’s job on Monday Night Football recently and apparently didn’t do too well- he won’t be hired.

NFL schedule comes out on Thursday and ESPN still doesn’t know who will be calling their MNF games. Sounds like Joe Tessitore will be the play-by-play guy.

                                3) It was so cold at the Rockies-Pirates game last night in Pittsburgh that all fans got a ticket voucher good for a free ticket to a future (Mon-Thurs) home game.

                                2) Question of the Day: If you owned an NFL team and had a really good QB, like Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady or Ben Roethlisberger, would you seek his input on personnel decisions regarding the offense? I’m curious what people think about this.

                                1) RIP Barbara Bush, 92. Only two people have been both a First Lady and the mother of a President, Mrs Bush and Abigail Adams. RIP, ma’am.
