Saturday’s List of 13: things I’m looking for this weekend…….
13) Last seven times the Dallas Cowboys played on Monday Night Football, they lost the following week; four of those games were at home. Cowboys-Rams is an interesting game Sunday afternoon.
12) Underdogs covered five of last six Colorado-UCLA games; Buffs’ win LY was their first in last six games against the Bruins, who allowed 106 points in losing the last two weeks.
11) Giants are 0-3; they visit Tampa Bay, where Bucs’ offense is struggling big time. Loser of this game will be looking for the panic button.
10) Navy beat Tulsa the last two years, 42-40/44-21; Middies covered six of their last seven games as a road favorite. Tulsa is 2-8 in its last 10 games as a home underdog.
9) Another 9:30am game from England; but Saints-Dolphins might be worth getting out of bed to watch. Miami’s travel schedule this season has been ridiculous; their first home game of the season will be next Sunday, October 8th.
8) Ole Miss covered nine of its last 12 games with Alabama, winning two of last three SU. Wager against the Crimson Tide at your own risk.
7) Ravens looked terrible in London last week, now they play their rivals from Pittsburgh without benefit of a bye week after the trip over the pond. Baltimore has done well against the Steelers recently; this will be interesting, with both teams coming off a loss.
6) Road team won last seven Buffalo-Kent State games SU; Bulls won their last five visits here. Kent State is 0-3 vs I-A teams this year, outscored 119-6.
5) Jacoby Brissett is starting his 4th NFL game (for 2 teams), but Sunday night in Seattle will be his first NFL road start. Tough environment to play in, against a very good defense.
4) Underdogs covered last five Georgia-Tennessee games, with average total in last five, 72.2. Vols beat Georgia the last two years, after trailing both games by 17 points.
3) Winner of Jets-Jaguars will be an “early season surprise”. Jacksonville crushed the Ravens last week; how come teams don’t take the bye week after London games anymore?
2) Middle Tennessee won its last nine games with Florida Atlantic; they beat the Owls 77-56 LY, gaining 757 yards, 495 on the ground. I’m guessing FAU has this game circled on the calendar.
1) 0-3 Bengals visit Cleveland; Marvin Lewis needs a win here. Cincinnati played well last week at Lambeau Field, but they need a win, not a moral victory, and they need a win this week.

MLB roundup: Red Sox wrap up AL East title
September 30, 2017
BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox clinched their second consecutive American League East title with a 6-3 win over the Houston Astros on Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park.
Mitch Moreland had a pair of RBIs, Mookie Betts hit a solo home run, and Hanley Ramirez, Rafael Devers and Andrew Benintendi each drove in one run for the Red Sox, who needed a win or a New York Yankees loss to clinch. It marked the first time since division play began in 1969 that the Red Sox have won back-to-back AL East crowns.
Boston's Drew Pomeranz (17-6) bounced back from a short start last Monday to toss six-plus innings, allowing one run, striking out three and giving up two hits and two walks.
Brian McCann launched a solo home run, his 18th, and Evan Gattis and Yuli Gurriel each had RBI singles for AL West champion Houston (100-61), which will finish with the second-best record in the league behind the Cleveland Indians and is set to face the Red Sox in the AL Division Series. Game 1 of the series is Thursday in Houston.
Yankees 2, Blue Jays 1
NEW YORK -- Aaron Judge broke Babe Ruth's team record for home runs at home, and CC Sabathia pitched effectively into the sixth, but New York was eliminated from the AL East race shortly after beating Toronto.
The Yankees needed to win out and for the Red Sox to lose their remaining two games to have a shot at the division title. The Red Sox secured a 6-3 victory over the Astros 21 minutes after the Yankees closed out their 21st win in 29 games. It officially confirmed that New York will host the wild-card game Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins.
Judge extended his rookie record by opening the fourth with his league-leading 52nd homer. He broke Ruth's record with his 33rd home run at Yankee Stadium. Ruth set the home record in 1921 when the Yankees played across the Harlem River at Manhattan's Polo Grounds in the team's first pennant-winning season.
Dodgers 5, Rockies 3
DENVER -- The celebration began in the clubhouse before Colorado took the field and wound up losing to Los Angeles.
The Rockies erupted with joy at 5:28 p.m. local time after watching former Colorado starter and now St. Louis Cardinals closer Juan Nicasio strike out Milwaukee's Brett Phillips with the tying run on second base to seal a 7-6 comeback win over the Brewers. The loss assured the Rockies of the second National League wild card and a berth in the postseason for the first time since 2009 and the fourth time in the 25-year history of the franchise.
The Dodgers were assured of home-field advantage throughout the postseason when the Houston Astros and Cleveland Indians lost Saturday before Los Angeles won. Brandon Morrow (6-0), the third of seven Dodgers pitchers, got the win. Closer Kenley Jansen, pitching on his 30th birthday, got the final four outs for his 41st save in 42 opportunities.
Cardinals 7, Brewers 6
ST. LOUIS -- Milwaukee blew an early six-run lead in a loss to St. Louis that ended its hopes for a National League wild card.
After scoring four times in the third to pull back into contention, the Cardinals delivered the killing blow with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Harrison Bader's two-strike, two-out RBI single to left scored Stephen Piscotty with the winning run.
The Brewers got the tying run to second with two outs in the ninth after Orlando Arcia's infield single and a stolen base by pinch-runner Quintin Berry. But Brett Phillips swung through a 2-2 fastball from Juan Nicasio for the last out and the end of a surprise bid for the playoffs.
Pirates 4, Nationals 1
WASHINGTON -- Sean Rodriguez tied the game with a single with two outs in the ninth and Max Moroff had a bases-loaded triple later in the inning as Pittsburgh rallied to beat Washington.
Nationals starting pitcher Max Scherzer left the game in the top of the fourth with a possible injury. A.J. Cole, who has made eight starts this year, came in and did not allow a hit in 3 2/3 innings.
The Pirates had just one hit going into the ninth but erupted against Brandon Kintzler (2-1), who was going for his second save with the Nationals (97-64) and 30th overall this year. The winner was George Kontos (1-1), who pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Former Washington reliever Felipe Rivero pitched the ninth for the Pirates to get his 21st save.
White Sox 2, Indians 1
CLEVELAND -- Kevan Smith had two hits and two RBIs and six Chicago pitchers combined on a three-hitter as the White Sox snapped Cleveland's three-game winning streak.
Despite the loss, the Indians, with a record of 101-60, clinched the home-field advantage throughout the American League portion of the postseason, by virtue of Houston's loss to Boston earlier in the day.
Ace Corey Kluber, in a tuneup for his start Thursday in Game 1 of the American League Division Series vs. the winner of Tuesday's wild-card game between Minnesota and the New York Yankees. pitched five innings, allowing one run on six hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Kluber lowered his AL-leading ERA to 2.25.
Tigers 3, Twins 2
MINNEAPOLIS -- Andrew Romine became the fifth player in major league history and the first since 2000 to play all nine positions in a single game and Detroit beat Minnesota.
Romine became the first player since Detroit's Shane Halter in 2000 to accomplish the feat. He also had a hit and a walk in the game as Tigers starter Buck Farmer (5-5) pitched five innings with one run allowed. Shane Greene pitched a scoreless ninth for his ninth save.
Minnesota's Aaron Slegers (0-1) gave up three runs -- two earned -- in 4 1/3 innings for his first major league decision. The Twins were already set as the second wild card in the American League and it was determined earlier in the day they will face the New York Yankees in Tuesday's wild-card game.
Marlins 10, Braves 2
MIAMI -- Giancarlo Stanton failed to hit his 60th homer in the penultimate game of the season, but Miami still defeated Atlanta.
Stanton, who has 59 homers, went 1-for-5 with one RBI and two strikeouts. In his final at-bat of the night, he struck out looking at a 94-mph fastball on the outside corner from reliever Jim Johnson. On Sunday, Stanton will get one more game in which to try to reach the magical mark of 60 homers as Miami hosts Atlanta in its regular-season finale.
One player did reach 60 on Saturday -- Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon, who reached that total in steals. Gordon went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two steals. He also became only the fifth player in Marlins history to reach 200 hits in one season.
Royals 4, Diamondbacks 3
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jake Junis logged his ninth victory and Jorge Bonifacio blasted a three-run homer as the rookies rallied Kansas City past Arizona.
Junis shares the American League lead for rookie pitchers. He limited the Diamondbacks to two runs and five hits in six innings. One of the hits was a home run by A.J. Pollock in the sixth.
Bonifacio's sixth-inning home run was his 17th of the season, the most by a Royals rookie since Eric Hosmer hit 19 in 2011. Hosmer homered on a 2-2 offering off Archie Bradley (3-3).
Cubs 9, Reds 0
CHICAGO -- Jon Lester threw five scoreless innings and Kyle Schwarber homered and drove in four runs to lead Chicago to a rout of Cincinnati.
Schwarber hit his 30th home run and had a two-run single in the regular season's penultimate game for the National League Central champions, who have won 15 of their last 18 games.
Lester (13-8) struck out seven and gave up four hits and no walks in his fifth victory in six starts and second scoreless outing of the season. He also threw seven scoreless innings April 16 against Pittsburgh. Starter Jackson Stephens (2-1) gave up four runs and four hits, struck out five and walked three in four innings for the Reds, who have lost 10 of their last 11 games.
Padres 3, Giants 2
SAN FRANCISCO -- Austin Hedges lashed a two-strike, two-run double with two outs in the ninth inning, sending San Diego to a victory over San Francisco and ruining right-hander Matt Cain's on-field retirement party.
Hunter Pence drove in runs with a second-inning fielder's choice and a seventh-inning single, handing the Giants a 2-1 lead they took into the ninth. Giants closer Sam Dyson (3-4) retired the first batter he faced, but usually reliable shortstop Brandon Crawford threw wildly to first base on Christian Villanueva's slow roller, allowing him to reach second.
Villanueva was credited with a hit. After Cory Spangenberg singled pinch-runner Matt Szczur to third, Dyson struck out Hunter Renfroe before Hedges' liner to right-center barely eluded right fielder Pence, easily scoring both runners for a 3-2 lead. Padres closer Brad Hand pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 21st save.
Rays 4, Orioles 3
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Brad Miller hit a three-run homer and Chris Archer threw five shutout innings, leading Tampa Bay over Baltimore.
The Rays won their third straight and clinched the season series with the Orioles, who have dropped six of their last seven games and 18 of 22.
Baltimore made it interesting in the ninth off Rays closer Alex Colome while facing a 4-2 deficit, as J.J. Hardy led off with a double and Chance Sisco followed with a single to put the tying run on base. Anthony Santander's sacrifice fly pulled the Orioles within a run with two outs, but Colome got Jonathan Schoop to line out to center for his major league-leading 47th save.
Mariners 6, Angels 4
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Kyle Seager hit a three-run homer in a five-run eighth inning and visiting Seattle held on to beat Los Angeles.
Seattle right-fielder Mitch Haniger went 5-for-5 with three doubles. The Angels took a 4-1 lead into the eighth, but the Mariners greeted reliever Cam Bedrosian with three consecutive singles before Seager blasted his 27th home run of the season over the fence in center for a 5-4 lead.
Yonder Alonso then followed with his 28th home run to make it 6-4. Kole Calhoun had three hits, including a solo home run, and Luis Valbuena drove in two runs to lead the Angels, who are guaranteed to have back-to-back losing seasons for the first time since posting three straight losing years from 1992 to 1994.
Rangers 8, Athletics 4
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Joey Gallo hit two home runs and had three RBIs in Texas' victory over Oakland.
Gallo hit a two-run homer in Texas' four-run second off Oakland starter Daniel Gossett and a towering solo shot to right in the third off right-hander Simon Castro. The multi-home run game was the fourth of his career, all this season. He has a team-leading 41 home runs this season.
Willie Calhoun and Elvis Andrus had RBI singles in the sixth. Jared Hoying and Delino DeShields also had RBIs for Texas to help make a winner out of right-hander Andrew Cashner (11-11). Designated hitter Khris Davis (2-for-3) and third baseman Matt Chapman had RBIs for Oakland.
Mets 7, Phillies 4 (11)
PHILADELPHIA -- Asdrubal Cabrera hit New York's 224th home run of the season to extend a franchise record in the top of the 11th inning, lifting the Mets over Philadelphia.
The three-run homer off Phillies reliever Adam Morgan (3-3) capped a four-hit night for Cabrera, who finished a triple shy of the cycle, and gave the Mets their 70th victory of the season.
New York's Seth Lugo went four innings, surrendering six hits and two earned runs in his final start of the season. Henderson Alvarez struggled in his final start of the season for the Phillies. He gave up three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings but walked six batters and failed to post a strikeout.

Leading Off: Playoff pairings set; Stanton's last licks
September 30, 2017
A look at what's happening around the majors Sunday:
THAT'S A WRAP
Even though all 15 games start just after 3 p.m. EDT, the final day of the regular season figures to be a quiet one. With every spot secured and pairings already set, all 10 playoff teams can rest up and prepare for the postseason, which begins Tuesday night with Minnesota at the New York Yankees in the AL wild-card game. Boston clinched consecutive AL East titles for the first time in franchise history Saturday with a 6-3 victory over Houston. Colorado took the last playoff berth when Milwaukee wasted a six-run lead in a 7-6 loss to St. Louis. The Rockies play at division rival Arizona in the NL wild-card game Wednesday.
LAST LICKS
Giancarlo Stanton gets one more shot at hitting his 60th home run when the Marlins host the Braves. Rookie left-hander Max Fried (1-1, 3.74 ERA) starts for Atlanta. Stanton is trying to become the first player to reach the milestone since 2001 when Barry Bonds hit 73 and Sammy Sosa had 64. There have been five players in history to hit at least 60 in a season. Stanton remained at 59 after going 1 for 5 with an RBI single Saturday night during Miami's 10-2 win.
FINGERS CROSSED
With slugger Bryce Harper just back from a knee injury, the last thing Washington wants going into the playoffs is to be worrying about Max Scherzer's health. The ace right-hander was pulled from his start Saturday night against Pittsburgh because of an apparent injury to his right leg. Scherzer stumbled on a fourth-inning pitch, but the NL East champions didn't provide immediate word on his condition. It was his final tuneup before the Nationals play the Chicago Cubs in a best-of-five Division Series beginning Friday. Scherzer, a top contender for his third Cy Young Award, leads the National League with 268 strikeouts. He is 16-6 with a 2.51 ERA.
MAYBE THIS TIME
Perhaps outfielder Michael Brantley will get a few more at-bats for the Indians in their regular-season finale against the White Sox. Brantley was activated from the disabled list Saturday, and Cleveland is deciding whether to include him on the roster for its AL Division Series, which starts Thursday at home against the Yankees or Twins. Brantley had been sidelined since Aug. 9 with a right ankle injury. The two-time All-Star pinch-hit and singled sharply off right-hander Carson Fulmer. ''I just want to make sure that we're not putting him in a spot that isn't right, so we're going to talk for a little bit,'' Indians manager Terry Francona said before the game. ''He's tried so hard to come back, and believe me, we appreciate what he's trying to do. I just want to talk to him at length because he's got a career ahead of himself.'' The 30-year-old Brantley was hitting .301 with nine homers and 52 RBIs in 89 games. He missed the postseason last year - and Cleveland's dramatic run to the World Series - after undergoing right shoulder surgery.
JUST ME AND YOU
The Astros and Red Sox wrap up the regular season at Fenway Park before beginning an immediate rematch in the ALDS, starting Thursday in Houston. ''We're both division champions,'' Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. ''We'll obviously see a lot of each other over the next 10 days.'' Not surprisingly, both teams plan to hold back top starters Sunday and prep them for the playoff series. Collin McHugh pitches for Houston instead of Dallas Keuchel, who will throw a simulated game. Hector Velazquez goes for the Red Sox in place of ace Chris Sale. ''Chris is deserving of a couple of extra days to just get some rest,'' Boston manager John Farrell said.

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……
13) Oklahoma State 41, Texas Tech 34— OSU’s kicker clanked two really short FG’s off the right upright, but the Cowboys overcame all that and scored a TD with 1:12 left to send the fans home unhappy in Lubbock. Good ballgame, except for Gus Johnson’s occasional screaming on FOX.
12) Florida State 26, Wake Forest 19— Seminoles ran opening kickoff back for a TD, it was called back by a penalty. From that point on, Wake outgained them 367-270 but FSU hit a long pass in the last minute to win game. If you knew nothing about reputations/teams and just watched this game, you could have easily thought that Wake Forest is the better team.
11) Troy 24, LSU 21— Troy State is in Alabama; they play in the Sun Belt; they got a check for $985,000 to come and be a patsy to help LSU get ready for SEC play. Problem is, they won.
Last year, LSU fired Les Miles, who was 62-28 in SEC games while coaching the Tigers. LSU then hired Ed Orgeron, who is 7-24 in SEC games in 4+ years as coach at Ole Miss/LSU. This was administrative malpractice, replacing a really good head coach with a career assistant.
Don’t believe me? Go find the book Meat Market, written by Bruce Feldman; it details one of the recruiting periods during Orgeron’s tenure at Ole Miss. If you read that book and think Orgeron should be an SEC head coach, then we’ll agree to disagree.
10) Upsets of the Day— wasn’t a big day for surprises:
Troy +20.5 won 24-21 at LSU
Maryland +13 won 31-24 at Minnesota
North Texas +8.5 won 43-28 at Southern Mississippi
9) Washington State 30, USC 27— One of season’s best games ended way after midnight Friday night. Three of USC’s five starting offensive linemen are hurt and they don’t have a week off until November, which will make Sam Darnold’s season a lot more difficult.
8) Maryland 31, Minnesota 24— Terrapins win here as a 13-point underdog with their #3 QB playing- their top two QB’s are out for the year.
7) Florida 38, Vanderbilt 24— Two starting QB’s here are both sons of NFL coaches; Florida’s Luke Del Rio is the son of the Raiders’ coach, Vandy’s Kyle Shurmur is the son of the Vikings’ offensive coordinator. Del Rio broke his collarbone here, is out for the year.
6) Georgia 41, Tennessee 0— If you’re an aspiring college football coach and you’d like to coach in the SEC, send your resume to:
Athletic Director
University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Knoxville, Tennessee 37996
Believe me, you couldn’t do any worse than the guy who has that job now.
5) Stanford 34, Arizona State 24— Bryce Love ran for 301 yards and three TD’s.
4) Utah State 40, BYU 24— This is the worst BYU team I can remember; they need to get into a league, makes your schedule more balanced. Cougars turned ball over seven times in this game; that makes it difficult to win.
Maybe when the Raiders’ dome gets built in Las Vegas and UNLV moves into it, they and BYU can join the Big X or the Pac-12 as a western tandem.
3) Clemson 31, Virginia Tech 17— It is October 1st; Tigers have already won at Louisville and Virginia Tech; they beat Auburn at home. How do you win as much as Clemson has the last few years and remain somewhat under the radar?
2) NFL Network has a pregame show that starts at 7am Sunday; I get that some people are awake on Sunday morning, whether it be for work or church, but do people really get up on Sunday morning and watch TV? At 7am? College games don’t get over until 2am or so on Saturday night— got to sleep sometime.
1) No drama for the last day of baseball season; Colorado-Arizona and Minnesota-New York are the two Wild Card games. There are probably executives at ESPN that don’t even know that there are major league teams in Denver/Phoenix, Lord knows they never show ‘em on TV.][I]Sunday’s six-pack
