CLEVELAND (AP) Edwin Encarnacion and the Cleveland Indians won their 16th straight game, extending the best streak in franchise history by beating the Baltimore Orioles 5-0 Friday night.

Encarnacion hit a three-run homer in the first inning into some trees next to Heritage Park, the team's hallowed area where past Cleveland stars and teams are immortalized.

Mike Clevinger (9-5) improved his chances to pitch in the postseason with six strong innings as AL Central leaders became just the third team in the expansion era - since 1961 - to win 16 straight in a season.

Cleveland's string is the longest in the majors since Oakland won 20 straight in 2002. The longest winning streak in major league history is 21 by the 1935 Chicago Cubs.

The 1916 New York Giants had a string of 26 wins and one tie.

Encarnacion hit his 34th home run, connecting off Wade Miley (8-12).

      PADRES 10, DIAMONDBACKS 6

PHOENIX (AP) - The Arizona Diamondbacks' team-record 13-game winning streak ended when Manuel Margot drove in four runs that led San Diego.

Down 8-0, the Diamondbacks scored twice in the fifth and then added four more runs in the sixth. Padres reliever Craig Stammen retired two batters with the bases loaded to preserve an 8-6 lead.

Jordan Lyles (1-2), in his second start for the Padres, pitched into the sixth.

The Padres rocked Patrick Corbin (13-12) for eight runs on 11 hits, seven for extra bases, in 4 1-3 innings.

      ROCKIES 5, DODGERS 4

LOS ANGELES (AP) - DJ LeMahieu doubled home the go-ahead run and Colorado sent NL West-leading Los Angeles to its eighth straight loss.

The Dodgers blew a 4-1 lead in the first behind Yu Darvish (2-3), who was chased after giving up four runs in the fifth.

Los Angeles still owns the best record in baseball at 92-49, but has equaled its longest skid since May 2013. The majors' best team at home this season has lost seven straight at Chavez Ravine for the first time since August 1999. The Dodgers have dropped 13 of 14 overall.

Chris Rusin (5-0) won in relief and Greg Holland got his 38th save.

      ATHLETICS 9, ASTROS 8

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Jed Lowrie singled home the winning run in the ninth inning after Boog Powell's tying home run, and Oakland snapped Houston's seven-game winning streak.

Marcus Semien hit a grand slam for the Athletics.

Josh Reddick homered, doubled twice and drove in four runs for the AL West-leading Astros. Jose Altuve and Yuli Gurriel added two-run homers.

Blake Treinen (2-4) got the win. Ken Giles (1-3) took the loss.

Houston starter Collin McHugh exited after just three innings because of a fingernail injury. The Astros had won 10 in a row at the Coliseum.

      MARINERS 4, ANGELS 3

SEATTLE (AP) - Ben Gamel hit a three-run homer to give Seattle an early lead, Mike Leake overcame first-inning problems to pitch six solid innings, and the Mariners snapped a three-game losing streak.

Leake (2-0) allowed two earned runs and struck out five, as Seattle got a needed victory to continue hanging around the edges of the AL wild-card race.

Los Angeles starter Ricky Nolasco (6-13) was unable to make it out of the fourth.

      NATIONALS 11, PHILLIES 10

WASHINGTON (AP) - Michael A. Taylor raced for an inside-the-park grand slam when center fielder Odubel Herrera misplayed his line drive, and Washington eliminated Philadelphia from postseason contention.

Herrera misread Taylor's hit off Jake Thompson (1-2) in the third inning, taking a few steps in before leaping as the ball soared over his head. Herrera chased it down on the warning track and threw to the infield, but shortstop J.P. Crawford missed up the third-base line with his relay, allowing Taylor to slide home safely.

Taylor set a career high with five RBIs and matched a personal best with four hits. Trea Turner homered and drove in three, and Max Scherzer (14-5) allowed four runs over six innings.

Washington has won five straight and reduced its magic number for winning the division to three. Philadelphia is the first team in the majors eliminated from playoff contention.

Herrera extended his hitting streak to 21 games, longest in the majors this year.

      RED SOX 9, RAYS 3

BOSTON (AP) - Drew Pomeranz did not allow a hit until the fifth inning and gave up two runs over six and Mookie Betts hit a three-run homer for the Red Sox.

It was the third straight victory for the Red Sox, who lead the second-place New York Yankees by 4 1/2 games atop the AL East.

Pomeranz (15-5) struck out seven, allowed two hits and walked two en route to tying Chris Sale for the team lead in victories.

Jesus Sucre hit a two-run homer for the Rays, who have homered in a season franchise record 18 straight games.

Chris Archer (9-9) was roughed up for a season-high eight runs, six earned, and nine hits in three-plus innings.

Betts clanged his homer off Pesky's Pole in right field in the first inning.

      BREWERS 2, CUBS 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Ryan Braun hit his 300th homer and Jimmy Nelson combined with three relievers on a five-hitter as Milwaukee beat Chicago in the first regular-season Friday night game at Wrigley Field.

Milwaukee pulled within four games of Chicago for the NL Central lead.

Braun hit a two-run drive in the first inning against John Lackey. Nelson pitched four-hit ball over five innings before leaving with a sore right arm, and the Brewers opened the weekend series on a winning note after dropping four of five.

Nelson (12-6) struck out seven and walked two while winning his third straight start.

Corey Knebel worked the ninth for his 33rd save in 38 chances.

Lackey (11-11) settled down after Braun connected, holding the Brewers to two runs and four hits over seven innings. He struck out nine and walked two.

      RANGERS 11, YANKEES 5

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Martin Perez won his seventh straight start after playoff-hopeful Texas rallied from an early four-run deficit and beat the AL wild card-leading Yankees.

Elvis Andrus had three hits, including the tiebreaking two-run single in the fifth that put the Rangers up 7-5.

Perez (12-10) became the first Rangers pitcher to win seven straight starts since Kenny Rogers set the club record in 2005 with eight in a row. The left-hander allowed five runs, only two earned, while giving up eight hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Nomar Mazara homered for Texas, which stayed within 2 1/2 games of Minnesota for the AL's second wild card.

Andrus, hitting .400 (28 of 70) over his last 16 games, also had two doubles.

Masahiro Tanaka (11-11) had won his last three starts.

      TIGERS 5, BLUE JAYS 4

TORONTO (AP) - Third baseman Jeimer Candelario started Detroit's first triple play in 16 years, Nicholas Castellanos slugged his third career grand slam and the Tigers beat Toronto.

With runners at first and second, Candelario backhanded Kevin Pillar's grounder and stepped on the bag. Second baseman Ian Kinsler took his feed and made a quick turn for the second out, and his throw to first narrowly beat Pillar for the Tigers' first triple play since Aug. 1, 2001.

It was the first time Detroit had a triple play and a grand slam in the same game.

Castellanos hit his slam off Marcus Stroman (11-7) in the third inning, and Kinsler added a solo shot in the seventh.

Buck Farmer (4-2) allowed two runs, one earned, in five innings. Shane Greene got his seventh save.

      TWINS 8, ROYALS 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Eddie Rosario homered and drove in four runs, helping Minnesota beat Kansas City.

Rosario had a sacrifice fly in the first inning, hit his 21st home run in the third inning off Ian Kennedy (4-11) and knocked a two-out, bases-loaded single in the fourth. Rosario has 10 home runs and 28 RBIs in his past 30 games.

Ervin Santana (15-7) gave up four runs and five hits over five innings for the victory. He is 4-0 in nine starts since a July 21 loss. His 15 victories are tied for the AL lead.

Matt Belisle pitched the ninth for his seventh save.

      CARDINALS 4, PIRATES 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Luke Weaver pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning and also drove in a run, helping St. Louis improve its postseason hopes.

The Cardinals have won seven of nine, pulling within four games of the NL Central-leading Cubs. St. Louis is even closer in the chase for the second wild-card spot.

Pittsburgh has lost three in a row.

Waver (5-1) has won four straight decisions. He gave up seven hits, walked none and struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings.

Juan Nicasio made his St. Louis debut and got four outs for his third save.

Trevor Williams (6-8) allowed four runs in 4 2/3 innings.

      METS 5, REDS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Jose Reyes homered twice, Seth Lugo pitched six shutout innings and New York beat Cincinnati for its third straight win.

Travis Taijeron got the Mets started when the 28-year-old rookie led off the second with his first major league home run. New York, which leads the National League in homers, has won 17 of its last 19 games against the Reds - including eight straight at Citi Field.

Reyes went deep off Amir Garrett (3-7) in the fifth, scoring Lugo and giving New York a 4-0 lead. Reyes also clubbed a solo shot in the third, becoming the 13th player to hit 100 homers in a Mets uniform.

Lugo (6-4) allowed four hits and walked one in his first win since July 25. A.J. Ramos got two outs for his 27th save.

      GIANTS 9, WHITE SOX 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Pablo Sandoval snapped his 0-for-39 skid with a three-run homer, and Matt Moore pitched San Francisco past Chicago in an interleague game between last-place teams.

Denard Span also homered and Brandon Crawford had three hits with an RBI for the Giants, who have won back-to-back games after losing seven of eight.

Sandoval went 1 for 3 with four RBIs. His previous hit was a single on Aug. 25 at Arizona.

Avisail Garcia homered for the White Sox, who have dropped five straight.

Moore (5-13) allowed two runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings. He won for just the second time in eight decisions.

Lucas Giolito (2-2) gave up five runs, three earned, and three hits in 5 1/3 innings. He was ejected by plate umpire Gabe Morales after he was lifted. White Sox manager Rick Renteria also was tossed, by crew chief Eric Cooper.

      MARLINS 7, BRAVES 1

ATLANTA (AP) - Jose Urena allowed only three hits in 6 1/3 innings and added his first career RBI to stop Miami's five-game skid.

Urena (13-6) gave up a fourth-inning homer to Freddie Freeman but little else. Atlanta's only other hits off Urena were a second-inning single by Tyler Flowers in the second and a bunt single by Ozzie Albies in the sixth.

Miguel Rojas and Urena had back-to-back RBI singles off Mike Foltynewicz (10-12) in the second. Urena took a .077 batting average into the game and had not driven in a run in 69 career at-bats.

      • LEADING OFF: Yankees-Rays moved to Citi Field; Sale's pitch
        September 8, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

        CLOSER AND CLOSER

The Cleveland Indians try for their 17th straight win when Josh Tomlin starts at home against Baltimore. The longest winning streak in major league history is 21 games by the 1935 Chicago Cubs. The defending AL champion Indians have trailed only twice during their string and have outscored opponents 114-28. Gabriel Ynoa, recently recalled from Triple-A, makes his first start this season for the Orioles.

        GOOD SEATS AVAILABLE

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. at www.Mets.com/Irma and the Citi Field box office for next week's Yankees-Rays series, moved from St. Petersburg, Florida, to the Mets' home ballpark in New York due to Hurricane Irma. Field Level reserved seating will be $25, with no purchase fees. Major League Baseball considered other neutral sites, like Baltimore and Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, but hotel availability was limited in both cities, and in New York only the Rays need lodging. It was the Rays who opened their stadium to Houston and Texas after Hurricane Harvey. Now, they'll be guests of the Mets as the home team in the series. That means the Yankees - who are 2-0 at Citi Field this year, part of their four-game season sweep of the Mets - will again be the visiting team in their own city. Meanwhile, the Mets will be in Chicago to play the Cubs.

        GOOD AS GOLD

Diamondbacks star Paul Goldschmidt was held out of the starting lineup Friday for the fifth straight game because of stiffness in his right elbow. The first baseman says he thinks he could play - he was hitting .314 with 33 home runs and 109 RBIs. Arizona is in firm control of the top NL wild-card spot and had won 13 in a row going into the start of a weekend series vs. the visiting Padres.

        SALE'S PITCH

AL Cy Young Award candidate Chris Sale (15-7, 2.85 ERA) can polish his resume when Boston hosts Tampa Bay. The lanky lefty is a favorite to win his first prize as the AL's best pitcher, but he has struggled recently, going 1-3 with a 5.48 ERA over his past four starts, including a pair of losses to the rival Yankees. He's still piling up the strikeouts, though, and is four shy of matching his career best of 274.

        PAIR OF 10s

Luis Severino and Andrew Cashner go head-to-head in a 12:05 p.m. local start at Texas following a night game in the series opener between the Yankees and Rangers. Severino (12-6) has allowed no more than one earned run in eight of his last 10 starts, going 7-2 with a 2.15 ERA during that span for New York. Cashner (9-9) is 6-2 with a 2.62 ERA in his past 10 starts for Texas.

        JJ IS OK

Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy is off the disabled list after missing nearly three months because of a broken right wrist. He was activated from the 60-day disabled list Friday but didn't start at Cleveland. Hardy is batting .211 with three home runs and 21 RBIs in 64 games this season. Tim Beckham, acquired from Tampa Bay at the July 31 trade deadline, has taken over at shortstop and went into the weekend hitting .359 with seven homers and 20 RBIs since the deal.

        • Saturday’s six-pack

          — 85-year old Vince Dooley, the former Georgia football coach, threw out the first pitch before the Brewers-Cubs game. Dawgs play Notre Dame Saturday night, so lot of their fans were in Chicago last night to see the Cubs play.

          — Indians 5, Orioles 0— Sixteen wins in a row for Cleveland.

          — As of 9:30 Friday night, there were 2,649 entries in the Westgate Super Contest, at $1,500 a pop. First place will be over a million bucks.

          — Pablo Sandoval homered last night, ending an 0-for-39 slump that was longest hitless streak EVER by a Giants’ position player.

          — Miami Dolphins will practice in Los Angeles next week; Jaguars will stay in Houston Sunday nite until they can determine if it is safe to return to Jacksonville.

          — New York-Tampa Bay 3-game series scheduled for the Trop next week has been moved to Citi Field in NYC because of Hurricane Irma.

          **************************

Saturday’s List of 13: Things I’m looking for this weekend…….

          13) Ohio State went to Norman and whacked Oklahoma 45-24 LY; now the teams meet in the Horseshoe, with two senior QB’s and two experienced offensive lines.

          12) Ezekiel Elliott will play; unsure if Odell Beckham (ankle) will, but Giant-Cowboy games are usually fun, which is why they’re always in primetime games together.

          11) Louisville plays Clemson next week, but first they visit a North Carolina squad that lost as a double digit home favorite to Cal last week. Trap game for the Cardinals.

          10) Browns cut CB Joe Haden couple weeks ago; Steelers gave him $27M for three years about a half hour later. Haden meets up with his old teammates Sunday when Pittsburgh visits Cleveland.

          9) Iowa’s offense didn’t look like much last week in a win over Wyoming. Hawkeyes usually beat rival Iowa State, but the Cyclones were 4-1 as a home underdog last year.

          8) Super Bowl losers usually struggle the next year, especially in season openers (2-12 vs spread the last 14 years). Falcons are favored in Chicago after their 0-4 preseason. Mike Glennon makes his debut at QB for the Bears.

          7) Pittsburgh beat Penn State last year, but the Panthers needed OT to beat I-AA Youngstown last week. Penn State crushed Akron last week. Revenge could be in the cards in Happy Valley.

          6) Raiders/Texans both improved a lot last year; then both lost their QB late in the season. Oakland re-tooled its defense a lot in the offseason; this will be a good test for them.

          5) Stanford has had the upper hand over USC for the last decade now; Trojans need to win this game to stake their claim to the top of the Pac-12. If you’re a Jet fan, watching this game might be more interesting than the game in Buffalo Sunday, seeing how USC’s QB Sam Darnold figures to be the first QB taken in next spring’s draft.

          4) Jacksonville is going to try and play old school football, running ball more to protect its defense and its suspect QB. Houston Texans have obviously had tremendous distractions the last few weeks; for three hours, the Texans and their fans can block all that out, maybe.

          3) Mike Riley used to be Oregon State’s coach; he didn’t do that well vs rival Oregon, but now he brings his Nebraska Cornhuskers to Eugene. There have been wildfires in Oregon this week that messed with the air quality in Eugene; the Ducks moved their practices closer to the ocean.

          2) Can’t wait to see how Jared Goff looks after being coached this summer; Rams-Colts game is a little weird. LA doesn’t have Aaron Donald, its best defensive player. Indy doesn’t have its QB Andrew Luck, or its center.

          1) Kansas hasn’t been 2-0 in football since 2011; they host a Central Michigan squad here that needed OT last week to beat a I-AA team. Jayhawks are favored to get to that 2-0 mark.

                      • LEADING OFF: Indians go for 18, Brewers can sweep Cubs
                        September 9, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Sunday:

                        SUNDAY NIGHT STREAKING

The Indians will play for their 18th straight victory in a nationally televised game against the Orioles. Francisco Lindor homered to help Cleveland win its franchise-record 17th straight on Saturday, the longest run in the majors since Oakland took 20 straight in 2002. The best streak in baseball history belongs to the New York Giants, who had a 26-game run in 1916, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The Giants' stretch included a tie, which doesn't count as a completed game in baseball. Cleveland right-hander Trevor Bauer (15-8, 4.39 ERA) seeks to extend his career-long winning streak to nine games in a matchup against Jeremy Hellickson (2-3, 6.87).

                        ''WE NEED IT''

The Brewers can complete a timely sweep of the NL Central-leading Cubs at Wrigley Field. Milwaukee pulled within three games of the defending World Series champions with a 15-2 win Saturday, riding big hits from Travis Shaw and Orlando Arcia during an eight-run third inning. Zach Davies (16-8, 3.77) goes for the Brewers against Kyle Hendricks (6-4, 3.29). ''We need it,'' Shaw said of Sunday's showdown. ''We're running out of time. Every game is kind of a must-win at this point.'' It wasn't all rosy for Milwaukee on Saturday, though, as Jimmy Nelson was ruled out for the season because of a shoulder injury.

                        DAY OF REST

The Nationals can clinch the NL East with a win against Philadelphia and a Miami loss, but don't expect to see Anthony Rendon, Daniel Murphy and Ryan Zimmerman fighting for the title. Manager Dusty Baker had planned to rest most of his regulars, and he's standing by that even with Washington's magic number at two. ''We've got some young players that are going to play tomorrow,'' Baker said. ''Twenty-one games in 20 days - these guys need a blow and tomorrow is the perfect time to give them one.''

                        PAINFUL TIMING

Three postseason contenders could be without key players after they got hurt Saturday: Texas center fielder Carlos Gomez rolled his right ankle on a swing against the Yankees. He didn't even make it halfway to first base on his groundout and needed help getting off the field. Gomez was on crutches with a walking boot after the game. ... Red Sox utility infielder Eduardo Nunez came up limping vs. Tampa Bay after legging out an infield hit. He was replaced at shortstop by regular starter Xander Bogaerts. Acquired from San Francisco in late July, Nunez has provided a spark in Boston's lineup, batting .312 in 37 games with eight homers and 27 RBIs. ... Cardinals center fielder Dexter Fowler bruised his left knee against Pittsburgh when he crashed into the wall trying to catch a long drive by Adam Frazier that turned into an inside-the-park home run. Fowler was replaced in center by Randal Grichuk.

                        JUST IN TIME

The Astros are at risk of being swept by the Athletics, but first, Oakland will have to solve Houston ace Dallas Keuchel (12-3, 2.88). The A's took the first three games of a four-game series against the AL West leaders, but Keuchel is 3-0 with an 0.83 ERA in three starts against Oakland this year, including seven scoreless innings during a 3-1 victory on Aug. 18.

                          Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday…….

                          13) Oklahoma 31, Ohio State 16— Buckeyes play Army, UNLV and Rutgers their next three games; going to be some serious butt-kicking going on there, after this showing in the second half.

Senior QB Mayfield was 27-35 for 386 yards and three TD’s for the Sooners, who outscored Ohio State 28-13 in the second half.

                          12) USC 42, Stanford 24— Trojans gained over 600 yards of offense; hope they left some points on that field for the Rams today. USC was 10-12 on third down, ran for 307 yards. Impressive.

                          11) Clemson 14, Auburn 6— Gus Malzahn won the national title at Auburn in 2013; since then, he is 24-17 on the Plains, 11-13 in SEC games. No bueno.

Gene Chizik won the national title at Auburn in 2010; he got fired two years later, after going 11-14 in 2011-12. My point here? Not a lot of patience at Auburn- they gained a total of 117 yards in this game. The natives are officially restless.

                          10) Iowa 44, Iowa State 41 OT— Cyclones’ QB Jacob Park was South Carolina’s Mr Football in 2013; he went to Georgia, redshirted in 2014, then transferred to Trident Technical School, and then Northeasterm Oklahoma- he didn’t play ball at the those places.

He started three games at Iowa State last year; Saturday he completed 25-46 passes for 347 yards and four TD’s as the Cyclones lost in OT to their in-state rivals.

Iowa State’s starting QB for most of last year was Joel Lanning; he is now the Cyclones’ middle linebacker. You don’t see that a lot.

                          9) TCU 28, Arkansas 7— Horned Frogs ran the ball well and played solid defense. In its last three games against Power 5 opponents (Mizzou, Va Tech, TCU), the Razorbacks have scored zero second half points. No bueno.

Arkansas’ kicker missed 22 and 23-yard FG’s; TCU fumbled on the Arkansas 3-yard line.

                          8) Middle Tennessee 30, Syracuse 23— MTSU coach Rick Stockstill played QB at Florida State back in the day; his son Brent plays QB for the Blue Raiders now. Wonder what that is like, a coach needing to win to keep his job, and his most important player is his son. No pressure there.

The great basketball coach Al McGuire coached his son Allie at Marquette; when a point guard on the team complained that Allie was starting ahead of him, McGuire said: “I like you, but I LOVE my son.” End of discussion.

                          7) Indians 4, Orioles 2— Cleveland has outscored opponents 118-30 during its 17-game winning streak, 57-12 in the first three innings.

The A’s swept a doubleheader from Houston Saturday; I should’ve bought a lottery ticket.

                          6) Milwaukee Brewers’ pitcher Jimmy Nelson is out for the year; he hurt his shoulder diving head-first back into first base on a pickoff attempt Friday night. Oy.

                          5) Louisville 47, North Carolina 35— Lamar Jackson was 25-39 passing for 393 yards and three TD’s, and also ran for 132 yards and three TD’s, as the Tar Heels got beat at home for the second week in a row. Cardinals play Clemson next week- they gained 705 yards in this game.

                          4) Kent State 38, Howard 31— Cam Newton’s brother is Howard’s QB; he’s put up 74 points as the Bison split a pair of games against lower-level I-A programs. Not bad.

                          3) Georgia 20, Notre Dame 19— Dawgs had 12 penalties for 126 yards; teams combined to convert only 7-34 on third down, but this is a huge road win for Georgia, with a freshman QB.

                          2) Mississippi State 57, Louisiana Tech 21— Tech actually LOST 87 YARDS ON ONE PLAY late in this game!!! They wound up with 3rd-and-goal from their own 7-yard line, which has to be a record of some sort.

                          1) Next Saturday’s Miami-Florida State game was moved to October 7 because of the hurricane; Miami’s October 12 game was pushed back two days to the 14th.

Our thoughts-prayers to all the people affected by the storms. Please stay safe, though you’re probably not reading this anyway.
