ARGOS, TICATS RENEW HISTORIC LABOUR DAY CLASSIC RIVALRY

HAMILTON — The Toronto Argonauts and Hamilton Tiger-Cats will add another chapter in their historic Labour Day Classic rivalry when they close out Mark’s Labour Day Weekend on Monday.

If this year’s game is anything like the 2016 version, CFL fans are certainly in for a treat.

Last year, the Ticats battled back from a 13-point half-time deficit, outscoring the Argos 32-6 in the final 30 minutes to defeat Toronto 49-36.

The Argos are looking for their first Labour Day Classic win since 2012.

The Boatmen couldn’t hold off the surging Stampeders in Week 10, falling 23-7 to the top team in the league. Toronto kept pace through the first two quarters, heading into halftime trailing only 9-7. But Marc Trestman’s revamped offence was held off the scoreboard in the final 30 minutes. Toronto quarterback Ricky Ray was held to only 220 yards and no touchdowns.

The Argos’ only points were from an impressive 115-yard pick six by former Ticat Cassius Vaughn.

“There are no moral victories, but I thought our defence really, really played an excellent football game,” Trestman told Argonauts.ca after the loss. “Other than a couple of pre-snap penalties, I thought they played extremely hard with a huge sense of urgency throughout the game… Anytime you can hold a team to 21, 22, 23 points, that really says something about the way you’re playing defence.”

Toronto’s defence has been one of the best in the league heading into Week 11. That unit ranks second in total yards given up per game (347.1) and passing yards allowed per game (250) through the first half of the season.

The Argos will still be without a key cog in their defence as Victor Butler is a no-go for Labour Day. There were reports that the CFL leader in sacks was likely to play his first game since being sidelined in Week 5 with a knee injury.

Argos receiver S.J. Green could become the second player could this year to reach the 1,000-yard mark. The 32-year-old needs 101 yards on Monday to reach the milestone for the fifth time in his career.

Plenty of urgency is riding on Monday’s game for the Argos, who are 4-1 against their division this season. They’ve still got Hamilton twice more and sweeping the season series with the Tabbies could be key to taking the East Division, which has a new leader in the Ottawa REDBLACKS following their win on Thursday night.

The rival Hamilton Tiger-Cats don’t plan on making a Labour Day win easy at Tim Hortons Field.

The Black and Gold used their bye week to make a number of changes on and off the field.

The Ticats have tabbed Jeremiah Masoil to start on Monday in favour of Zach Collaros. It is the first time since Collaros arrived in Hamilton from Toronto in 2014 that he will play a backup role. The 29-year-old has lost 12 straight as a starter, just one game short of a CFL record.

The start marks Masoli’s first ever on Labour Day.

Monday will also mark June Jones’ first game as a CFL head coach. Vice President of Football Operations Kent Austin stepped down as the Ticats bench boss last week, promoting Jones from assistant head coach. The 64-year-old has head coaching experience in the NCAA and NFL.

Jones says that his offence will have to step up if the Ticats want to secure their first win of 2017 on Labour Day.

“I think our defence has played well enough to win the last two weeks,” Jones told Ticats.ca. “I thought if we were really productive offensively we had a chance to win both of those games. We’ll see what happens. The kids have a lot of pride… I think the scheme is something they have confidence in and we’ll get going.”

Craig Butler will make his CFL coaching debut in the Labour Day Classic. The Ticats defensive back announced his retirement last week and has joined the coaching staff as an assistant coach.

The Ticats last played on Aug. 18, falling to the Ottawa REDBLACKS 37-18. Luke Tasker led the Ticats offence with 93 yards and a touchdown on six catches. Collaros completed 9 of 17 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown before being replaced by Masoli midway through the third quarter.

Linebacker Larry Dean racked up a career high 10 tackles in the loss.

On Monday, the Ticats will play their first game without John Chick. The veteran defensive end was traded to the Edmonton Eskimos following a loss to Ottawa.

Ricky Collins, acquired from the Saskatchewan Roughriders, will make his Tiger-Cats debut.

    By The Numbers

8 – League-leading pass knockdowns for Ticats defensive back Richard Leonard. He has at least one in his last five games.

20.3 – Average margin of defeat for the Ticats this year. Only Saskatchewan in 1959 has ever finished with a scoring differential for a season worse than the Ticats this year (22.2).

98 – Receiving targets for S.J. Green, the most in the league.

210 – Career starts for Ricky Ray including Monday’s Labour Day Classic.

    The Skinny

The clock is ticking on the Ticats to salvage their so-far winless season. Hamilton has a history of success on Labour Day, and a victory against their bitter rivals could be the confidence boost the team needs to get back on track.

The Ticats have an overall record of 32-13-1 in Labour Day matchups against the Argos and have won the last three straight. Ricky Ray is 1-2 in Labour Day game against Hamilton.

While history is on the Ticats’ side, the more recent past is not in their favour.

Hamilton established Tim Hortons Field as one of the toughest stadiums for opposing teams to play in when it was built three years ago. The inaugural game was Labour Day of 2014. Hamilton won their first 10 games in front of a hometown crowd. There first loss at the new field was not until Aug. 27, 2015.

Flash forward to now and the Ticats have dropped their last eight games on home turf, a losing skid that has carried over from last season.

On the other hand, the Toronto Argonauts have never won a regular season game at the Ticats’ new home.

Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. ET and can be followed live via CFL.ca Game Tracker and seen on TSN and ESPN 3.

LOS ANGELES (AP) J.D. Martinez tied a major league record by hitting four home runs and the Arizona Diamondbacks routed the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers 13-0 on Monday night for their 11th straight victory.

Martinez became the 18th player in major league history to hit four homers in a game, and the 16th in the modern era. Earlier this year, Scooter Gennett accomplished the feat for Cincinnati.

Martinez hit a two-run shot in the fourth off Dodgers starter Rich Hill (9-7). Martinez added solo homers in the seventh and eighth innings before capping his power show with a two-run drive in the ninth.

Robbie Ray (12-5) struck out a career-high 14 in 7 2/3 innings. The last time Arizona won 11 in a row was June 18-30, 2003.

        INDIANS 5, WHITE SOX 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Jose Ramirez homered again, Trevor Bauer earned his eighth straight win and the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago White Sox 5-3 on Monday for their 12th victory in a row.

Ramirez connected a day after tying the major league record with five extra-base hits, including two homers.

Bauer (15-8) gave up two runs on three hits, striking out nine in 6 1/3 innings. The AL Central leaders moved closer to the team-record 14-game winning streak they posted last season.

James Shields (2-6) kept the White Sox in the game before taking a line drive by Francisco Mejia off the knee in the seventh. Shields limped off the field after his 11th consecutive start without a win, and is considered day-to-day.

Cody Allen worked around two walks to pitch a scoreless ninth for his 24th save in 28 chances.

        PIRATES 12, CUBS 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Cubs ace Jake Arrieta exited in the third inning with a hamstring cramp, and Pittsburgh routed the NL Central leaders.

Arrieta (14-9) clutched his leg in obvious pain. The 2015 Cy Young Award winner tried to stretch out his right leg during a visit by manager Joe Maddon and the trainers, but a test pitch ended with Arrieta unable to let go of the ball.

Arrieta said he thinks he'll be able to make his next scheduled start on Saturday against Milwaukee.

Josh Bell broke the NL record for most home runs by a rookie switch-hitter with his 24th. He topped the 23 by Chipper Jones for Atlanta in 1995.

Chad Kuhl (7-10) allowed four hits in seven innings. The Pirates have won three in a row.

BLUE JAYS 10, RED SOX 4

BOSTON (AP) - Steve Pearce had three hits as Toronto sent Red Sox starter Rick Porcello to his major league-leading 16th loss.

Boston fell for the fourth time in five games. Its lead in the AL East was trimmed to 2 1/2 games over the Yankees.

Kendrys Morales hit a three-run shot for Toronto in the first inning. Jose Bautista connected for a solo drive in the third, and Raffy Lopez chased Porcello (9-16) with a two-run homer in the sixth.

Porcello, who had won five of his previous six starts, allowed seven runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings. He won the 2016 AL Cy Young Award.

The Blue Jays added three more in the ninth, highlighted by Justin Smoak's 37th homer and a run-scoring double for Morales.

J.A. Happ (7-10) gave up one earned in 5 2/3 innings.

        RAYS 11, TWINS 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Corey Dickerson hit his 26th home run and also doubled twice, powering Tampa Bay past Minnesota.

The Twins' lead for the second wild-card spot was trimmed to a half-game by the Angels.

Logan Morrison, who got his 36th homer, and Kevin Kiermaier each added three hits for the Rays. Evan Longoria drove in three runs with a pair of singles.

Alex Cobb (10-9) gave up one run on three hits 5 2/3 innings. Jose Berrios (12-7) alllowed five runs on seven hits in five innings.

        NATIONALS 7, MARLINS 2

MIAMI (AP) - Anthony Rendon drove in four runs, Daniel Murphy drove in three more and Washington overcame a camera-denting home run by Giancarlo Stanton to beat Miami.

Rendon and Murphy each homered, doubled and singled.

Stanton hit his major league-leading 53rd home run, with the ball striking a TV camera just over the right-field wall.

A.J. Cole (2-4) allowed one earned run in 5 2/3 innings. Adam Conley (6-7) took the loss.

        RANGERS 8, BRAVES 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Elvis Andrus, Nomar Mazara and Rougned Odor homered, Andrew Cashner pitched six strong innings and Texas beat Atlanta.

The Rangers lead the majors with 215 homers, matching their total from last season.

Cashner (9-9) is 6-2 with a 2.62 ERA in his last 10 starts. R.A. Dickey (9-9) took the loss.

        ANGELS 11, ATHLETICS 9, 11 INNINGS

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Los Angeles employed an American League-record 12 pitchers on Labor Day, and Kole Calhoun hit a two-run triple in the 11th inning to beat Oakland.

Fernando Salas (1-0), the ninth Angels pitcher, tossed a perfect 10th for the victory. Keynan Middleton came in as the third pitcher of the 11th and got his third career save as the Angels tried to move up in the wild-card race. The A's have lost a season-worst seven in a row.

Three Angels pitchers didn't record an out. The 12 pitchers overall topped the previous AL mark of 11 done four times, most recently by Tampa Bay in 2013. The Colorado Rockies set a major league record by using 13 pitchers in 2015 during a 16-inning game.

Angels star Mike Trout fouled a ball off his lower right leg in the 11th but stayed in the game after being checked by manager Mike Scioscia and a trainer.

Matt Olson homered twice for Oakland, including a tying, two-run drive with two outs in the ninth against Blake Parker.

Blake Treinen (1-3) gave up Calhoun's go-ahead hit.

        ASTROS 6, MARINERS 2

SEATTLE (AP) - Dallas Keuchel pitched effectively into the eighth inning as Houston won its fifth in a row.

Alex Bregman hit a tiebreaking, two-run double in the seventh inning for the AL West leaders.

Keuchel (12-3) allowed two runs and seven hits in 7 2/3 innings. He struck out five and walked two in his longest outing since April 5. The left-hander started the season 9-0, but was 2-3 with a 5.35 ERA in his seven previous starts since coming off the disabled list on July 28.

Yuli Gurriel and Brian McCann homered for Houston. Marc Rzepcynski (2-1) took the loss.

        YANKEES 7, ORIOLES 4

BALTIMORE (AP) - Starlin Castro homered and drove in three runs, Didi Gregorius also went deep and New York fueled its playoff push with a win over Baltimore.

After spotting the Orioles an early lead, New York bounced back for its fourth win in five games. The Yankees enhanced their position atop the AL wild-card race - they're 2 + games behind AL East-leading Boston.

Aaron Judge drew a career-high four walks, singled and scored a run to help the Yankees extend their wild-card lead over Baltimore to 4 + games.

The Yankees played without catcher Gary Sanchez, who began serving a suspension that was reduced to three games from four. The MLB suspension stemmed from an Aug. 24 brawl during a game against Detroit.

Tim Beckham, Chris Davis and Welington Castillo homered for the Orioles, who have lost three of five following a seven-game winning streak.

Chad Green (3-0) struck out four in 2 1/3 innings after starter Jordan Montgomery got two outs in the fifth.

Dylan Bundy (13-9) gave up five runs, five hits and four walks in four-plus innings.

        ROCKIES 4, GIANTS 3

DENVER (AP) - Carlos Gonzalez drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning, and Colorado halted a four-game skid.

The game at Coors Field was played in hazy conditions because of smoke from the Western wildfires.

San Francisco reliever Steven Okert (1-1) gave the Rockies their walkoff walk. Greg Holland (3-5) pitched a perfect ninth.

Charlie Blackmon hit his 33rd homer as the Rockies increased their lead to 1 1/2 games over Milwaukee for the second wild-card spot. Colorado is 8-0 at home against the Giants this season.

        REDS 5, BREWERS 4

CINCINNATI (AP) - Billy Hamilton hit a solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting Cincinnati over Milwaukee.

Hamilton, who leads the majors with 58 stolen bases, sent a drive into the left-field seats for his fourth homer of the season. He connected off Josh Hader (1-3).

The last-place Reds opened a three-game series by stopping the playoff-contending Brewers. Raisel Iglesias (3-2) pitched a perfect ninth for the win.

It was the second career shutout and complete game for Martinez (11-10). Luis Perdomo (7-9) took the loss.

        METS 11, PHILLIES 7

NEW YORK (AP) - Jose Reyes and Asdrubal Cabrera each homered and the Mets built a big lead, beating Philadelphia to end a four-game losing streak.

The Mets were up 10-0 by the fourth inning.

Rafael Montero (4-9) won his second straight start. New York chased Mark Leiter Jr. (2-5) with a six-run fourth.

        ROYALS 7, TIGERS 6

DETROIT (AP) - Eric Hosmer, Salvador Perez and Alcides Escobar homered for Kansas City, which denied Detroit with its defense.

Alex Gordon reached well over the left-field fence to rob Mikie Mahtook of a three-run homer, while Lorenzo Cain's sliding catch took two RBIs away from Jose Iglesias.

Since trading Justin Verlander and Justin Upton on Thursday, the Tigers are 0-5 and have been outscored 36-11.

The Tigers trailed 7-3 going into the ninth, but Nicholas Castellanos hit a three-run homer off Brandon Maurer with one out. Maurer struck out Efren Navarro before James McCann and Jeimer Candelario singled to put the potential winning run on base. Scott Alexander replaced Maurer and retired Mahtook for his third save in five chances.

Jake Junis (7-2) improved to 5-0 in his last seven starts, giving up three runs on seven hits in five innings. Artie Lewicki (0-1) pitched five innings in his major league debut, allowing five runs on 11 hits and a walk.

        • MLB notebook: Sanchez suspension trimmed to three games
          September 4, 2017

Major League Baseball reduced the suspension of catcher Gary Sanchez to three games.

Sanchez, initially suspended four games, apologized for his role in the benches-clearing-brawl at Detroit that led to multiple suspensions. Sanchez entered the scrum from the Yankees' dugout and landed punches on Miguel Cabrera and Nick Castellanos.

The fracas began when Yankees relief pitcher Tommy Kahnle threw a pitch behind Cabrera. Sanchez was hit in the thigh by a pitch earlier in the game, after hitting his fourth homer in the three-game series.

"I want to apologize for my actions during the last Detroit Tigers series," Sanchez said in a Facebook post. "The heat of the moment and my desire to protect my teammates led me to commit some errors during the brawl. It's an incident I regret and from which I have learned. I know to some these may be mere words, but they are words that I feel the need to express because I sincerely feel this way, and for respect to you, the fans, the Yankees organization, the Detroit Tigers and the game of Baseball."

Sanchez, who is hitting .276 with 28 home runs despite missing several weeks because of injury to start the season, began his suspension on Monday and miss the three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles.

-- David Wright's ongoing injury saga continued Monday as the New York Mets announced he decided to undergo surgery to repair a right rotator cuff.

The 34-year-old third baseman will have shoulder surgery Tuesday in New York.

Wright has appeared in just 75 games since 2015 because of various shoulder, back and neck issues. He was originally injured April 14, 2015, stealing second base and the original diagnosis was a right hamstring strain.

He was eventually diagnosed with spinal stenosis, which is the narrowing of the spinal column that will affect him throughout his life. Last year, Wright underwent surgery to repair a herniated disk in his neck and did not play after May 27.

Wright reported to spring training hoping to play but experienced shoulder weakness. He made it back to the field by appearing in three rehab games with Class A St. Lucie but last Monday, the Mets announced he was shutting it down due to shoulder pain.

Besides Wright, the Mets also announced three other players will undergo season-ending surgery.

Michael Conforto, who tore the posterior capsule in his left shoulder on Aug. 24, will undergo surgery this week.

T.J. Rivera will undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow this week and reliever Josh Edgin will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Tuesday.

--Bryan Price will manage the Cincinnati Reds for at least one more season. As first reported by The Cincinnati Enquirer on Saturday, the Reds picked up a club option on Price for 2018.

Price addressed the report with local media on Monday morning.

"In this business, a lot of people don't get this opportunity," he said. "I'm really grateful that they're sticking with me to see this thing through."

Cincinnati is in last place in the National League Central and while there has been some improvement in stabilizing the lineup and developing the club's pitching prospects, the Reds are still a ways away from declaring an end to their rebuilding process.

--Chicago White Sox starter James Shields left Monday's game against the Cleveland Indians with a right knee contusion.

Shields exited after getting struck on the right knee by Francisco Mejia's line drive in the top of the seventh inning.

After Shields was checked out by White Sox trainers, he was able to walk off the mound. X-Rays were negative on Shields and the White Sox said he is day to day.

Before getting hurt, Shields allowed four runs in 6 1/3 innings. In 17 starts this season, Shields owns a 5.72 ERA.

          • LEADING OFF: Verlander debut for Astros, Indians go for 13th
            September 4, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Tuesday:

            STREAKING

J.D. Martinez and the Arizona Diamondbacks try to continue a pair of impressive streaks against the major league-leading Dodgers. Martinez homered in his final four at-bats during Monday night's 13-0 victory against Los Angeles, including the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. The Diamondbacks will go for their 12th straight win when the series resumes Tuesday night. Zack Greinke gets the ball for Arizona, while Hyun-Jin Ryu tries to cool off Martinez and company.

            NEW STRIPES

Justin Verlander makes his much-anticipated debut for the Houston Astros when he starts at Seattle. The AL West leaders got the longtime Tigers ace last week minutes before the trade deadline, hoping he can help them win the World Series for the first time. The 34-year-old righty waived his no-trade rights to accept the deal. Verlander (10-8, 3.82 ERA) went 5-1 and his last seven starts for Detroit, striking out 56 and only once permitting more than two earned runs.

            GETTING CLOSE

The Cleveland Indians go for their 13th straight victory, which would put them just one away from tying the longest winning streak in team history set last year. Jose Ramirez homered Monday as the AL Central leaders beat the White Sox 5-3 - on Sunday, he tied a major league record by getting five extra-base hits in a game. Danny Salazar (5-6, 4.30 ERA) starts in Chicago vs. lefty David Holmberg (2-3, 3.55 ERA).

            CHECK HIM

The Cubs will see how pitcher Jake Arrieta is feeling, a day after he left his start in Pittsburgh because of tightness in his right hamstring. Brilliant in August, Arrieta says he thinks he'll be OK to keep pitching for the NL Central leaders.

            HOT AND NOT

Odubel Herrera has an 18-game hitting streak for the Phillies. He extended the string with a pinch-hit single Monday against the Mets. The outfielder was activated from the disabled list earlier in the day after being out because of a strained left hamstring. ... Pablo Sandoval is hitless in his last 33 at-bats for San Francisco. The 2012 World Series MVP for the Giants returned to the team this summer after being cut by Boston, but has just one home run and four RBIs in 27 games following another 0-fer at Colorado.

            MIGHTY THIN

The Yankees have only three outfielders on their roster - Aaron Judge, Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury. Aaron Hicks was put on the disabled list over the weekend, leaving New York without a backup who has a lot of outfield experience. Manager Joe Girardi says the playoff contenders could use infielders Ronald Torreyes or Tyler Wade as a fill-in this week in Baltimore.

            HE'S BACK

Angels righty Garrett Richards makes his first start since April 5, when he strained his right biceps in his season debut. That was his first appearance in 11 months after an elbow injury cut short his 2016 season. Richards is set to start at Oakland. He won't be on an exact pitch count, but manager Mike Scioscia said, ''there's definitely a range. ... We still have to take baby steps with him.''

            • Report: Bucs, Hurdle agree to extension
              September 4, 2017

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle has reportedly signed a four-year contract extension to remain with the club through the 2021 season.

Hurdle, 60, has been with the club since the beginning of the 2011 season. His contract was set to expire at the end of the 2017 season, but the Pirates possessed an option for the 2018 season.

It's been a down season for the Pirates, who are 9 1/2 games out of first place in the National League Central with under a month to go. They will likely miss the postseason for the second straight year after making the playoffs three straight seasons from 2013 to 2015.

The down year combined with his contract status led to speculation that Hurdle might not return, but the Pittsburgh-Post Gazette reported Monday that Hurdle had agreed to terms on a new deal. Hurdle declined to reveal specifics.

"I'm going to wait on the organization to get everything they need in place," Hurdle told the newspaper following Monday's game. "I've made it clear from the beginning that a contract would work out when it was meant to work out. I love working here. I love working in this organization. I'm proud to be a Pirate. I have been proud to be a Pirate. I'm going to do everything I can, if I get an opportunity to move forward, to bring a world championship to this city.

"The players in there, we're in a good place. The staff in there, we're in a good place. It would be humbling."

Hurdle has a 575-434 record as the Pirates manager and a 1,109-1,159 major league record, which includes eight years at the helm of the Colorado Rockies. Hurdle has also been a coach in the majors with Rockies and Texas Rangers. He played for four teams in his 10-year major league career, most notably with the Kansas City Royals, who drafted him in the first round in 1975.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                13) Think I say this every summer, but every NFL team should carry three QB’s for every game, even if the league mandates a 3rd QB roster spot that is apart from the normal 53-man roster. It should be done for the quality of the product.

Couple years ago, Houston Texans lost their QB to an injury on the first series of the game; for the rest of the afternoon, they had to be ultra-cautious with their backup QB, since he had no backup, so if he got hurt, Houston would’ve had to use a WR at QB and run Wildcat offense. What resulted was a terrible game to watch and a Houston loss.

For the good of the viewing audience, all teams should carry three QB’s for every game.

                12) I’ll keep this short: Aaron Donald has two years left on his contract, so I have no sympathy for him in his holdout. Come in, be the great player you are and eventually you’ll get paid. His agent is screwing him over if he allows Donald to miss games.

                11) Gus Johnson was calling UCLA’s 45-44 comeback win over Texas A&M on FOX Sunday night; Johnson is good at calling games until they get dramatic at the end, then he gets full of himself and starts screaming, so everyone knows HE is calling the action.

Let the game speak for itself, please?!?!?!

                10) Speaking of that game, a Texas A&M regent went on a Facebook rant after the game, saying Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin should be fired. I’m thinking this where if you’re this regent, you type the rant, count to 10, read it again, count to 10 again, then hit the “delete” key, so you don’t make yourself look like a fool. But thats just me.

                9) When a football official throws a flag in the defensive backfield, it is funny how often one of his fellow officials also throws a flag, to “sell the call”, as in “if two refs threw the flag it MUST HAVE BEEN a penalty.” Actually, it is fairly annoying, like we’re not smart enough to notice that BS.

                8) Sun Belt teams were 5-1 against the spread this weekend; Big 14 teams were 8-4. Conference-USA teams were 2-6, ACC teams 2-5 against the spread.

                7) Odd baseball game in Seattle Sunday; Oakland A’s lost 10-2 to lefty Andrew Albers, who isn’t exactly Sandy Koufax. A’s swung at 71 of Albers’ 101 pitches, but got only one hit- they fouled off 41 of his pitches!!! Thats a major league high for the last three years.

Albers induced only five swings/misses; 13 balls were put in play. Very unusual stat line for him.

                6) I mentioned recently that the Reds should bat Joey Votto leadoff, because of his .448 OB%. Turns out his on-base % leading off an inning this year is “only” .373— he’s led off 86 innings. From 2014-16, his on-base %age leading off an inning was .419.

                5) The last 23 times umpire Doug Eddings worked the plate, the underdog is 19-4.

                4) When the Dodgers lost five games in a row last week, it was their first 5-game skid since April 25-30, 2016. In between those two losing streaks, the other 29 big league teams had a combined 131 five+-game losing streaks.

                3) Giancarlo Stanton has had 45 games this year when he didn’t get a hit; the Marlins are 10-35 in those games, 57-34 in all their other games.

                2) Andrew Luck has been declared out for the Colts’ opener in Los Angeles Sunday, meaning Scott Tolzien (0-2-1 as an NFL starter) gets the nod at QB for Indianapolis.

                1) You read about this Dreamers program, where children of illegal immigrants might get deported, as many as 800,000 of them. At least 250 of those people work at Apple— do we really want 250 smart people deported? Deport criminals, not productive people.

                              Tuesday MLB Best Bet

                              Houston Astros vs Seattle Mariners

HeritageSports.eu Odds: Houston (-156) vs. Seattle (+146); Total set at 9.5

After an emotional return to Houston for the Astros over the weekend, they are now back out on the road for a 10-game road trip, all against division rivals. The trip got started out on the right foot last night with a 6-2 win over Seattle, knocking the Mariners back down to the .500 mark and trailing a handful of teams in the wildcard race. Houston's playoff position has been locked up for months atop the AL West, but tonight is their first look at their new prized pitching acquisition – Justin Verlander – on the mound.

Verlander is making his first start for the 1st place Astros tonight, and after all the complaining Houston players did after the July trade deadline, many have to be excited to see Verlander in an Astros uniform. He is exactly the time of big time name with an established pedigree that the Houston players were hoping to get in late-July, and tonight's their first opportunity to back up those thoughts they shared by giving Verlander plenty of offensive support.

It will be the 5th time this year that Houston's hitters have faced Seattle starter Ariel Miranda, and in three of the four previous outings the Astros have hit two HR's. Verlander would love to get that kind of help tonight, because you know he's feeling the weight of the heavy expectations thrust upon his shoulders as being that “big name” guy that can hopefully put Houston over the top in 2017.

That type of pressure can do funny things to a player, especially a pitcher trying to prove to his new team that he's definitely worth the price they paid for him. Verlander's last start with Detroit was a good one as he struck out nine and allowed just three hits over six innings at a hitter-friendly park in Coors Field. But his last start vs. Seattle this season was one where it was feast or famine for Verlander. He struck out 11 over 5.2 innings of work, but also game up three runs on four hits in just 5.2 innings of work. He's lost his last three starts overall vs the Mariners, and is just 2-5 SU vs. Seattle in his last seven.

With the added pressure on Verlander with him trying to prove his worth, maybe getting his first start in an Astros uniform against Seattle isn't the best option for Houston tonight. Throw in the likely emotional letdown coming for the Astros soon after their very emotional trip back home over the weekend (they are likely running on fumes right now), and the -160ish price tag on the Astros looks quite steep.

Seattle's Ariel Miranda is 2-2 SU vs. Houston this year, but both losses have come at home. Facing a team for the 5th time in a season does Miranda no favors tonight, but from a situational standpoint, he and his Seattle teammates do have a bit of an edge. All eyes (and the pressure) will be on Verlander in his Astros debut, and after everything that's gone on in Houston the past 10+ days, the rest of the Houston team may not be at their best to back Verlander up.

After numerous Astros players complained about management not being active at the trade deadline in July, it would be poetic justice that Houston's offense runs out of gas in the first start of the big name pitcher management finally went out and got.

Seattle was in last night's series opener until a four-run 7th did them in, and Seattle is on a 7-2 SU run when Miranda is on the hill after a full five days of rest. The Mariners are also 5-1 SU in their last six at home, and are definitely the more desperate team in terms of needing this win for their playoff aspirations.

Conversely, Houston is just 2-10 SU in their last 12 against a southpaw starter – including 1-5 SU in their last six on the road – and with much more pressure on them tonight with Verlander making his debut, I believe we see the emotionally drained Astros run out of gas tonight.

Home underdogs are ones I have no problem playing when the right situation presents itself, and tonight's situation is one where Seattle is more than capable of spoiling Verlander's debut. Add in the fact that more than 90% of the wagers have come in on Houston ML so far according to VegasInsider.com's betting percentage numbers, and the odds have actually moved in Seattle's favor since opening, and I'm taking a shot with the Mariners tonight.

HeritageSports.eu Best Bet: Seattle Mariners ML +146
