                • MLB roundup: Twins crush Royals 17-0
                  September 3, 2017

MINNEAPOLIS -- Eduardo Escobar had three hits and six RBIs, including two homers, and Joe Mauer added four hits as the Minnesota Twins hammered out 14 hits in a 17-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night.

Brian Dozier added a three-run homer and Byron Buxton had three hits in his return to the lineup for Minnesota, which remained a game behind the New York Yankees for the top wild card in the American League.

But the Twins' offense has been the key during its resurgence since the trade deadline. Minnesota has outscored opponents 200-124 in its last 31 games. In the process, the Twins' season run differential went for minus-73 to plus-1.

Kyle Gibson (9-10) won his third straight start with six scoreless innings. He gave up five hits and struck out five. The first five hitters in Minnesota's lineup went 13-for-23 with three homers against Kansas City, which has lost seven of its past nine games.

                  Yankees 5, Red Sox 1

NEW YORK -- Matt Holliday hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the sixth inning as New York defeated Boston.

Holliday appeared in his first game since missing nearly a month with a back injury. The designated hitter drove a first-pitch fastball from Drew Pomeranz (14-5) 443 feet into the left-field seats, giving the Yankees a 4-1 lead.

Holliday's homer helped Masahiro Tanaka (11-10) win his third straight since returning from a shoulder injury. He allowed one run and five hits in seven-plus innings, helping the Yankees get back to 4 1/2 games behind the first-place Red Sox in the American League East.

                  Astros 12, Mets 8 (1st game)

HOUSTON -- George Springer clubbed his career-best 30th home run and was one of six starters to record multi-hit games in Houston's interleague victory over New York in the first game of a doubleheader.

Springer, who finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, drilled an 0-2 fastball from the Mets' Matt Harvey (4-4) in the second inning to extend the Houston lead to 6-0 in the first game at Minute Maid Park since Hurricane Harvey ravaged the Gulf Coast last weekend.

The Astros plated four runs in the first inning off Harvey, making his first start since June 14 after being sidelined with a stress injury to the scapula bone in his shoulder. Harvey allowed seven earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts over two innings, the shortest outing of his career.

                  Astros 4, Mets 1 (2nd game)

HOUSTON -- Josh Reddick and Marwin Gonzalez recorded run-scoring hits to fuel a four-run, sixth-inning rally as Houston completed a doubleheader sweep of New York.

Reddick and Gonzalez plated Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve, respectively, after Bregman opened the sixth with a single off Mets right-hander Seth Lugo (5-4) before Altuve followed with a walk.

Brian McCann and J.D. Davis parlayed productive outs into RBIs against New York's Hansel Robles to extend the lead. Brad Peacock carried a shutout into the sixth inning before the Mets' Juan Lagares tripled and scored on Dominic Smith's double.

                  Cubs 14, Braves 12

CHICAGO -- Rene Rivera clubbed a grand slam while Anthony Rizzo capped a 2-for-5 day with a bases-clearing triple as Chicago won its sixth straight game.

The Cubs' Jon Lester (9-7) survived one rocky inning as he came off a 14-day disabled list stay for the start and win. Atlanta's Lucas Sims (2-5) dropped his second straight in a three-plus innings outing, his shortest of the season.

The Braves scored eight runs over the final three innings, including a three-run ninth off relievers Brian Duensing and Wade Davis. Davis finally quelled the rally as Freddie Freeman, the potential tying run, struck out.

                  Angels 7, Rangers 4 (10 innings)

ARLINGTON, Texas -- C.J. Cron belted a game-tying two-home run homer in the ninth inning and Kole Calhoun delivered a two-run tiebreaking single in the 10th as Los Angeles stunned Texas.

The Angels were down to their last strike when Luis Valbuena doubled to set the stage for Cron, who added a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning. Jose Leclerc (2-3) walked all three batters he faced to start the 10th inning and all three scored.

Blake Parker notched his fifth save in support of Yusmeiro Petit (4-0), who pitched a perfect ninth. The Rangers' A.J. Griffin retired the first 10 batters before Mike Trout doubled in the fourth.

                  Diamondbacks 6, Rockies 2

DENVER -- J.D. Martinez hit a three-run homer as Arizona won its ninth straight game.

The Diamondbacks' Patrick Corbin (13-11) gave up two hits and two runs (one earned) in 5 1/3 innings with three walks and four strikeouts in his 96-pitch outing. In his past five starts (35 2/3 innings), Corbin is 5-0 with a 0.50 ERA, eight walks and 33 strikeouts.

Jon Gray (6-4) gave up five hits and three runs over five innings as Colorado fell 5 1/2 games behind Arizona for the top wild-card spot in the National League. The Rockies lead Milwaukee by 1 1/2 games for the second position.

                  Marlins 10, Phillies 9

MIAMI -- Giancarlo Stanton hit his major league-leading 52nd home run of the season to help Miami defeat Philadelphia.

Stanton's homer, a solo shot in the first inning that traveled 445 feet to left-center, was his first since Tuesday. Entering that first at-bat Saturday, he had endured a 1-for-17 slump.

Marcell Ozuna was another Marlins hitting star. He went 3-for-5 with his 32nd homer of the season and four RBIs. He has 107 RBIs this season, four behind Stanton for team honors.

                  Padres 6, Dodgers 5 (1st game)

SAN DIEGO -- Yangervis Solarte's ninth-inning home run lifted San Diego past Los Angeles in the first game of a split doubleheader.

Solarte drove Pedro Baez's 96 mph fastball into the right-field seats for his first career walk-off homer. Baez (3-3) took the loss after the Dodgers had rallied in the top of the inning.

Los Angeles tied the game in the ninth on pinch hitter Justin Turner's two-run homer off closer Brad Hand (3-4). The Dodgers' Cody Bellinger smashed his 35th homer -- a fourth-inning, 412-foot solo blast that tied him with Mike Piazza for the franchise's rookie home run mark set in 1993.

                  Indians 5, Tigers 2

DETROIT -- Abraham Almonte drove in three runs with a double and a single and Corey Kluber scattered eight hits over eight innings to win his 14th game as Cleveland defeated Detroit.

Kluber (14-4), who is 7-7 lifetime versus the Tigers, shut out Detroit through six innings but Mikie Mahtook doubled leading off the seventh, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Bryan Holaday's single to right center.

Jordan Zimmermann (8-12) allowed five runs and 12 hits on 98 pitches spread over his five innings. Detroit's Alex Presley recorded the first four-hit game of his career. There were no walks in the game.

                  Nationals 3, Brewers 2

MILWAUKEE -- Michael A. Taylor homered and Trea Turner hit a go-ahead double as Washington scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning to defeat Milwaukee.

Ryan Madson (5-4) earned the win in relief by pitching a scoreless seventh inning in his first outing since Aug. 12. With the tying run on first base, closer Sean Doolittle got pinch-hitter Manny Pina to fly out to Taylor at the base of the wall to end the game.

Max Scherzer lasted only five innings and 75 pitches after being struck in the left leg by a line drive hit by Travis Shaw in the first inning. The right-hander, who was clearly bothered by his plant leg, limited the Brewers to one run on two hits.

                  Giants 2, Cardinals 1 (10 innings)

SAN FRANCISCO -- Nick Hundley hit the second pitch of the 10th inning for a solo home run, lifting San Francisco over St. Louis.

The walk-off homer, the second of Hundley's career, came one inning after the Giants had rallied to force extra innings on an RBI single by Buster Posey. San Francisco had lost its previous four games, including the first two of this series.

The game began as a pitchers' duel between veteran right-handers Lance Lynn of the Cardinals and Jeff Samardzija of the Giants. Lynn allowed only one hit in eight innings, Samardzija two in seven.

                  Blue Jays 7, Orioles 2

BALTIMORE -- Kevin Pillar, Josh Donaldson and Darwin Barney each homered to lead Toronto over Baltimore.

Pillar homered against Orioles starter Wade Miley (8-11) on an 0-2 pitch to lead off the fifth inning, staking Toronto to a 1-0 lead.

Donaldson followed with two outs in the seventh by blasting his 24th home run of the season deep into the left-field seats off Orioles reliever Richard Rodriguez, 27, who was making his major league debut. That three-run homer extended the Blue Jays' lead to 5-0. Barney made in 7-0 in the eighth with a two-run homer off Orioles reliever Alec Asher.

                  White Sox 5, Rays 4

CHICAGO -- Avisail Garcia, Omar Narvaez, Alen Hanson and Yolmer Sanchez all homered as Chicago snapped a four-game losing streak.

Garcia's two-run homer in the seventh inning gave the White Sox some breathing room after Tampa Bay got within a run on Logan Morrison's solo home run in the sixth. The Rays pulled within 5-3 on Adeiny Hechavarria's RBI single in the eighth inning.

The Rays then loaded the bases with three straight singles and got within a run when Danny Espinosa scored on Evan Longoria's fielder's choice. But with the go-ahead run at the plate, Juan Minaya closed out the victory by striking out Morrison for his fourth save.

                  Pirates 5, Reds 0

PITTSBURGH -- Rookie Jordan Luplow hit a three-run homer in the eighth as Pittsburgh ended a four-game losing streak.

Luplow, who earlier in the game got his first major league hit, lofted a one-out homer to left to make it 4-0. Starling Marte drove in another with a fielder's choice later that inning.

The Pirates' Jameson Taillon pitched six scoreless innings, allowing three hits with four strikeouts and one intentional walk. Reliever A.J. Schugel (4-0) pitched the seventh and got the win.

                  • LEADING OFF: Slumping Dodgers getting healthy
                    September 2, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                    BACK TO EARTH

While they're still the best team in the majors by far, the Dodgers have been less otherworldly for the past week, dropping six of their last seven. But their weekend series in San Diego has been encouraging nonetheless, because two stars are healthy again.

Rookie phenom Cody Bellinger, who missed nine games with a sprained ankle, hit his first homer since Aug. 12 and 35th of the season in Saturday's loss to the Padres. Clayton Kershaw got Los Angeles' only win this week on Friday with six scoreless innings. The Dodgers send Alex Wood (14-1, 2.41 ERA) to the mound in Sunday's series finale.

                    FORMER ACE

The Orioles have gotten back into the AL wild-card race without much help from the formerly reliable Chris Tillman, who made three straight Opening Day starts for Baltimore before he missed this season's opener with an injury. A brief demotion to the bullpen didn't change much for the struggling right-hander, who's allowed 10 runs over 10 2/3 innings in two starts since rejoining the rotation. Tillman (1-7, 7.91 ERA) takes the mound Sunday against Toronto.

                    NO SALE

Red Sox ace Chris Sale tops the majors with 264 strikeouts, and has fanned 44 in 29 2/3 innings against the Yankees. But the lefty is 0-2 in four starts vs. New York this year despite a 2.12 ERA in those matchups. Sale (15-6) can tie for the big league lead in wins with a night-time victory at Yankee Stadium in the last scheduled game between the rivals this season.

Luis Severino (11-6, 3.14) faces Boston for the fourth time this season. After two sharp starts, he was tagged for a career-worst 10 runs by the Red Sox on Aug. 12.

                    STILL WAITING

No word yet from Major League Baseball on the appeals by Yankees catchers Gary Sanchez (four games) and Austin Romine (two games) of their suspensions from recent brawls in Detroit. Tigers star Miguel Cabrera and reliever Alex Wilson had their penalties cut by a game apiece after appeals to MLB.

                    • Sunday’s six-pack

                      — Undrafted rookie Cooper Rush won the backup QB job in Dallas.

                      — Patriots traded #3 QB Jacoby Brissett to the Colts for WR Phillip Dorsett, who was their first round draft pick in 2015.

                      — JJ Watt’s tremendous fundraising efforts have now raised over $17M.

                      — Marlins 7, Phillies 4— Giancarlo Stanton hit his 52nd home run.

                      — Miguel Cabrera’s suspension was reduced to six games; it started Saturday.

                      — Get well soon to Tigers DH Victor Martinez, who will undergo cardiac ablation surgery to fix a recurring heartbeat issue.

                      ****************************

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

                      13) Alabama 24, Florida State 7— Horrific night for the Seminoles; QB Francois looks like he suffered a serious knee injury late in the game- they have no experience behind him.

FSU’s special teams imploded late in the third quarter, allowing a blocked punt, then fumbling the ensuing kickoff after an Alabama FG.

                      12) Maryland 51, Texas 41— Longhorns scored TD’s on defense, on a blocked FG and on a punt return, but STILL LOST BY 10 POINTS!!!! Texas was favored by 18.5. Oy.

Maryland also scored a TD on a blocked FG; they ran ball for 263 yards, threw it for 219 and their backup QB played the whole 4th quarter. Great win for the Terrapins.

                      11) USC 49, Western Michigan 31— Amazingly misleading final score; game was tied 14-14 at the half, was 28-28 with 7:30 left in 4th quarter. It was 35-31 with 4:00 left, but Trojans scored two TD’s in last 3:49 and won their opener, gaining 521 total yards.

USC has a backup long snapper named Jake Olsen who has been blind since he was 12 years old. He came in and made a perfect snap on a USC PAT late in the game. Good for him.

                      10) Oklahoma State 59, Tulsa 24— Cowboys averaged over 10 yards a play, but Tulsa converted 16-26 on third down, ran 98 plays, which is a huge red flag for an OSU defense that has to try and stop Big X offenses down the road.

                      9) Michigan 33, Florida 17— Gators’ defense had two pick-6’s in a 1:29 span early in 2nd quarter, but those were Gators’ only two TD’s of the game. Young Wolverines made two FG’s of 50+ yards and added a defensive TD late in the game. Florida had ten kids suspended for this game; for their sake, hope those ten kids are mostly on offense.

                      8) James Madison 34, East Carolina 14— Not only did the Pirates lose at home to a I-AA team, JMU was a 2.5-point road favorite. Not often a I-AA team is a road favorite at a I-A opponent.

                      7) There have already been 45 games this year where a I-A team played a I-AA team. Lot of schools treat these I-AA games are dress rehearsals for their conference games, an “exhibition” game with regular season prices, where you can work some of the kinks out. Not sure how much they help, especially if you lose, like East Carolina, Georgia State and Baylor did.

                      6) Liberty 48, Baylor 45— Speaking of which, Matt Rhule’s debut in Waco didn’t go very well.

Missouri 72, Missouri State 43— This game was 48-35 at the half. when you give up 35 points in a half to any team, especially a I-AA team, you have defensive issues.

Mizzou gained 815 yards, threw for 521, but they’re an SEC team and if you’re going to win SEC games, you damn sure better have a solid defense.

                      5) California 35, North Carolina 30— Golden Bears (+12.5) come east and post the upset, with soph QB Bowers throwing for 363 yards and four TD’s, including passes of 54, 67 yards.

                      4) Illinois 24, Ball State 21— Cardinals outgained the Illini 375-216 but couldn’t give the MAC an upset win. Illinois scored the winning TD with 2:06 left, then Ball State missed a 54-yard FG at the end. Cardinals were 12-21 on third down.

                      3) Nebraska 43, Arkansas State 36— Red Wolves have only 2 returning starts on their offensive line this year- that almost never happens!!! Despite being so young up front, junior QB named Hansen threw for 415 yards and three TD’s. Cornhuskers led 41-26 with 10:00 left, but when the game ended, Arkansas State had the ball on the Nebraska 10-yard line.

                      2) Louisville 35, Purdue 28— Lot tougher than expected. Cardinals committed 16 penalties for 110 yards, offsetting the 524 yards they gained from scrimmage.

                      1) Iowa 24, Wyoming 3— Hawkeyes held Cowboys’ QB Josh Allen without a TD, in a game where total offense was only 263-233 in good weather. Iowa’s offense has lot of work to do.

Flashback to 2003: Iowa (-10) beat Miami OH 21-3 in both team’s opener. Miami came to Iowa City with a highly-touted veteran QB, but also failed to score a touchdown that day.

Before you write off Josh Allen, remember that Miami’s QB that day was Ben Roethlisberger.
