  • Tuesday’s six-pack

Six baseball contracts that surprised me:

    — Jordan Zimmerman, Det: 3 years, $74M left after this year

    — Jose Altuve, Hst: 4 years, $12.5M; club option for 2018. Think they’ll take it?

    — David Wright, NYM: Mets are on hook for 3 more years, $47M

    — Francisco Cervelli, Pitt: 2 years, $22M left after this year

    — Albert Pujols, LAA: 4 years left, $114M left after this year. Oy.

    — Mike Trout, LAA: 3 years left, $102M left after this year.

    *******************************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……..

    13) Hurricane happenings:
    — Astros-Rangers series this week moves to the Trop in St Petersburg.
    — Texans-Cowboys exhibition game Thursday moves to Dallas.
    — BYU-LSU football Saturday moves to the Superdome in New Orleans.

    12) This storm in Texas might be the worst storm ever; another 15-25 inches of rain is expected between now and Thursday. We pray for everyone down there; stay safe!!!!

    11) Only two New York Mets have been active for all their games this season; Jerry Blevins and Jacob deGrom.

    10) Mets’ 1B prospect Dominic Smith is batting .161 in his first 59 major league AB’s; it is too early to worry about him (Rhys Hoskins started 0-12 and look how he’s doing) but I saw Smith play in Las Vegas in July and wasn’t all that impressed by him then. Time will tell.

    9) June Jones is now the coach of the Hamilton TigerCats of the CFL after the TiCats got off to an awful start this season; he’s brought in former Baylor coach Art Briles as an assistant.

    8) Rice University’s football team came back from its game in Australia and has relocated at TCU in Fort Worth, as they wait out the storm/flooding near their campus.

    7) Indianapolis Colts traded long snapper Thomas Hennessy to Jets in exchange for safety Ronald Martin. Unusual trade.

    6) Miami Marlins have new owners, a team that is rolling right now and the best outfield in all of baseball, but I keep seeing articles on how the the team might trade Giancarlo Stanton at the end of the season. Is that a good idea?

Stanton has a HUGE contract that has a long way to go on it; trading him is a bold move, since he is having a great season and is hugely popular in Miami. What could they get back for him? Tough early decision for the new ownership.

    5) The profile of Ivy League basketball is getting bigger; Yale-St Bonaventure game on December 9 is going to be shown on ESPNU.

    4) Jets named Josh McCown their starting QB, which if he is healthy, is the only possible choice they could’ve made. Bryce Petty played well Saturday but hurt his knee; the other options were not good at all.

    3) Clayton Kershaw is going to be activated later this week and will start either Friday/Saturday against the Padres in San Diego. He threw five innings in a AAA rehab start Saturday.

    2) If you want to replace those statues that have been taken down recently, how about a statue of a first responder carrying two little kids out of a flooded house? Those guys are heroes, for sure.

    1) DeShone Kizer will be the Cleveland Browns’ 27th different starting QB since 1999.

          • Tuesday's Diamond Notes
            August 29, 2017

Hottest team: Orioles (6-1 last seven) vs. Mariners

Baltimore isn’t ready to fly south for the winter as the Orioles pulled off their fifth straight win on Monday. The O’s edged the Mariners, 7-6 in a back-and-forth affair to avoid a letdown following a three-game sweep of the Red Sox at Fenway Park this past weekend. Baltimore improved to 5-2 in its previous seven home series openers, while topping the seven-run mark in each of its past five home victories.

Dylan Bundy heads to the mound for Baltimore in the second game of its set against Seattle, as the right-hander is unbeaten in his last six starts dating back to the All-Star break. Bundy has delivered four consecutive quality outings, while Baltimore is 4-0 in his past four home starts.

Coldest team: Royals (0-5 last five) vs. Rays

Amazingly, Kansas City hasn’t scored a run since last Thursday against Colorado. The Royals have played four games since and have been shut out in each one, three by Cleveland and last night by Tampa Bay. The 2015 World Series champions were on the cusp of a playoff spot in the American League in late July, but the Royals have dropped eight of their last 12 games overall.

The question heading into Tuesday isn’t if Kansas City can win, but if the Royals cross home plate even once? The Royals turn to right-hander Jake Junis, who is winless in each of his past two starts at home. Kansas City has lost more than five straight games only once this season, coming back in April when it dropped nine in a row.

Hottest pitcher: Trevor Bauer, Indians (13-8, 4.59 ERA)

After Corey Kluber won last night against the Yankees, Bauer looks to keep up with the former Cy Young winner as he has won his last six decisions. Bauer allowed four earned runs in his previous appearance against the Red Sox last Thursday, but was helped by tremendous run support in a 13-6 blowout. The right-hander has been sharp on the road of late by picking up victories at Kansas City and Boston, while giving up three earned runs and striking out 15 batters in those outings.

Coldest pitcher: Zack Godley, Diamondbacks (5-7, 3.15 ERA)

Godley is winless in his last three starts, while not receiving solid run support at the D-backs haven’t scored more than three runs in a game during this stretch. The good news is he has pitched well against the Dodgers, giving up four earned runs in 12.1 innings, while beating Los Angeles as a home underdog the last time he faced them earlier this month at Chase Field.

Biggest OVER run: Nationals (5-1 last six)

Washington’s bats have come alive recently after dropping 11 runs on Miami in Monday’s home blowout. The Nationals have scored at least five runs in each of their past four games, while hitting the OVER in three of the last four matchups with the Marlins. The OVER streak may be in jeopardy with Edwin Jackson taking the mound tonight as the right-hander has finished UNDER the total in six of his seven starts with Washington.

Biggest UNDER run: Brewers (9-0 last nine)

Milwaukee ended its west coast trip on a positive note by pulling out a pair of victories over Los Angeles as a sizable underdog, while limiting the Dodgers to a total of five runs in the entire series. In fact, all nine games on the road swing finished UNDER the total, while the Brewers didn’t allow more than three runs in five of the final six games. The Brew Crew is back at home this evening to face the Cardinals, as Matt Garza has seen the UNDER cash in five of his past six starts at Miller Park.

Matchup to watch: Rangers vs. Astros

Times are tough in Texas with the catastrophic flooding nailing the Houston area and surrounding parts. The Astros won’t be returning to Minute Maid Park for a while as their home series with the rival Rangers has been moved to Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg. Houston won two of three games over the weekend against the Angels, but will be road tripping for at least the next two weeks with their next series against the Mets being played at an undetermined location followed by visits to Seattle, Oakland, and Los Angeles.

The Astros will try to maintain their focus with Mike Fiers heading to the mound as Houston is just 2-4 in his past six outings. Fiers was knocked around by the Rangers the last time he faced them in Arlington earlier this month by allowing six earned runs in four innings of an 8-3 defeat. In two starts this season against Texas, Fiers has given up 11 earned runs, while the Astros are 1-1 in those outings.

Martin Perez counters for Texas, as the Rangers look to bounce back after getting swept by the Athletics this past weekend. Perez has won four straight starts, including terrific showings in road victories over the Mets and Angels this month, as he yielded only one earned run in those wins. In Perez’s lone start against Houston this season, the southpaw was racked in a 7-2 defeat by allowing six runs in 3.2 innings back on June 4.

            Betcha didn’t know:
The Tigers don’t like winning consecutive games. Amazingly, Detroit’s longest hot streak this season is four games as the Tigers go for back-to-back wins tonight at Colorado. However, Detroit has dropped six straight contests following a win, but the Rockies have lost four of their past five games at Coors Field.

Biggest public favorite: Twins (-215) vs. White Sox

Biggest public underdog: D-backs (+110) vs. Dodgers

Biggest line move: Padres (-110 to -120) vs. Giants

TORONTO -- Chris Sale struck out 11 in seven-plus scoreless innings and became the fastest pitcher to reach 1,500 strikeouts when the Boston Red Sox defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 3-0 on Tuesday night.

Sale (15-6) held Toronto to three hits and did not allow a walk. He reached 1,500 strikeouts in 1,290 innings. Kerry Wood was the fastest to 1,500 Ks previously, accomplishing it in 1,303 innings, according to STATS.

Hanley Ramirez homered for Boston. Craig Kimbrel pitched a perfect ninth, with two strikeouts, for his 31st save of the season.

Kendrys Morales had a second-inning double and an eighth-inning single for the Blue Jays. Brett Anderson (2-3) allowed six hits and one run in 5 2/3 innings in his Toronto debut. The left-hander struck out three and did not walk a batter.

                Royals 6, Rays 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Eric Hosmer hit a three-run shot, and Whit Merrifield and Jorge Bonifacio contributed solo home runs as Kansas City topped Tampa Bay to snap a five-game losing streak and a 45-inning scoreless drought.

The Royals' Jake Junis (6-2) allowed one run and struck out a career-high eight in 5 2/3 innings while striking out a career-best eight with no walks. Kansas City's scoreless streak was three shy of the major league record.

Alex Cobb (9-9) allowing three runs and seven hits, including two home runs, and throwing three wild pitches. Junis held the Rays hitless until Corey Dickerson singled with two outs in the fifth.

                Orioles 4, Mariners 0

BALTIMORE -- Dylan Bundy threw a one-hitter and struck out a career-high 12 batters and Manny Machado led a four-homer attack with two solo shots as Baltimore won its sixth straight.

Bundy (13-8), who returned from the bereavement list, allowed a fourth-inning bunt single from Kyle Seager and walked two -- both in the third inning. It was the 33rd individual one-hitter in team history and first since Jason Hammel threw one in 2012.

Jonathan Schoop gave the Orioles the lead with his solo homer in the first. Machado (sixth, eighth) and Castillo (seventh) added insurance later. Seattle's Erasmo Ramirez (5-5) allowed two runs and five hits in six innings.

                Rangers 12, Astros 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Playing 780 miles from home, where extensive flooding from Hurricane Harvey put much of Houston underwater, the Astros lost to Texas.

The Rangers halted a three-game skid, getting three hits from Shin-Soo Choo, including a three-run homer in the fifth inning to make it 11-2. Texas' Martin Perez (10-10) scattered eight hits and limited the Astros to two runs in seven innings.

The Rangers' Adrian Beltre had three RBIs to give him 1,637 for his career, moving him past Ernie Banks into 28th on the all-time list. Houston's Mike Fiers (8-9) gave up eight runs and eight hits in four innings.

                Twins 6, White Sox 4

MINNEAPOLIS -- Jorge Polanco continued his assault on Chicago pitching with two home runs as Minnesota prevailed.

Polanco has hit nine home runs this season with seven coming against the White Sox. Byron Buxton continued his hot August with an early RBI, and Eduardo Escobar drove in two runs to back a strong start from Ervin Santana.

Polanco went deep from both sides of the plate for the first multi-homer game of his career. Santana (14-7) allowed three runs in 6 2/3 innings while striking out seven. Jose Abreu went 4-for-4 for Chicago and drove in two runs.

                Rockies 7, Tigers 3

DENVER -- Nolan Arenado hit a three-run homer in a four-run seventh inning as Colorado defeated Detroit.

Arenado's blast capped a rally that included two singles, a walk and a sacrifice fly. He had three hits in his previous 23 at-bats and had gone hitless in 10 straight at-bats with runners in scoring position before he went deep and broke up the game.

The Rockies' German Marquez allowed three runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings with one walk and a career-high-tying 10 strikeouts. He is 6-0 with a 3.26 ERA in his last nine home starts.

                Cubs 4, Pirates 1

CHICAGO -- Jake Arrieta tossed six scoreless innings and Ben Zobrist broke a scoreless tie with a solo homer to help lift Chicago over Pittsburgh.

Arrieta (14-8) allowed two hits and two walks with four strikeouts. He closed August with a 4-1 record and one no-decision. Wade Davis, the fifth Cubs pitcher of the night, worked the ninth for his 27th save.

The Pirates' Chad Kuhl (6-10) worked 5 1/3 innings, his second straight defeat and third in his past four outings. After allowing Zobrist's home run in the sixth, Alex Avila chased him with an RBI single to make it 2-0.

                Cardinals 10, Brewers 2

MILWAUKEE -- Luke Weaver struck out 10 batters and Matt Carpenter hit his 18th home run of the season as St. Louis routed Milwaukee.

Luke Voit knocked in four runs and Paul DeJong had three RBIs for the Cardinals, who had 11 hits. Weaver (3-1) worked 5 2/3 innings, holding the Brewers to two runs, eight hits and a walk.

Only three of the six runs allowed by Milwaukee's Matt Garza (6-8) were earned, but the veteran right-hander struggled, allowing four runs while walking five in 3 1/3 innings. Carpenter's two-run shot in the fifth put St. Louis up 9-1.

                Nationals 8, Marlins 3

WASHINGTON -- Edwin Jackson allowed two earned runs in six innings against his former team and Daniel Murphy was 2-for-3 with two RBIs as Washington defeated Miami.

Jackson (5-3), in his eighth start for the Nationals this year, defeated the Marlins for the second time in his career. Jackson, now with his 12th team, began the 2016 season with Miami and entered with a 5.87 ERA against the Marlins in his career.

Giancarlo Stanton hit his 51st home run of the season for Miami. Vance Worley (2-4), who was in spring training with Washington, gave up nine hits and five runs with three walks and two strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.

                Reds 14, Mets 4

CINCINNATI -- Scott Schebler hit a grand slam and tied a career high with five RBIs, and Adam Duvall added a three-run shot in the ninth inning to lift Cincinnati past New York.

Cincinnati snapped a 14-game losing streak to New York dating to 2014 and an eight-game head-to-head skid at Great American Ball Park. Eugenio Suarez went 3-for-4 with a double and a RBI, and rookie Sal Romano (4-5) allowed three runs and six hits in xix innings.

The Reds' Joey Votto drew three walks and hit an RBI single in the ninth. His walk in the first inning was his sixth in six consecutive plate appearances.

                Indians at Yankees, ppd., rain

NEW YORK -- The game between the Cleveland Indians and New York Yankees was postponed because of rain.

The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.

The original pitching matchup for Tuesday was Cleveland right-hander Trevor Bauer (13-8, 4.59 ERA) versus New York lefty Jaime Garcia (5-8, 4.52). That will be the matchup for the opener with the nightcap featuring Indians lefty Ryan Merritt (1-0, 1.76) against Yankees lefty Jordan Montgomery (7-6, 4.00) as New York decided to push CC Sabathia back to face the Boston Red Sox on Thursday.

                Braves at Phillies, ppd., rain

PHILADELPHIA -- The game between the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies was postponed because of rain.

The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.

Philadelphia right-hander Jerad Eickhoff (4-7, 4.36 ERA) opposes Atlanta righty R.A. Dickey (8-8, 4.06) in Game 1. Phillies right-hander Mark Leiter Jr. (2-3, 3.86) faces Braves right-hander Julio Teheran (8-11, 4.90 ERA) in Game 2.

                  *******************************

                  Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                  13) Matthew Stafford is the highest paid player in NFL history? A 5-year contract extension worth $135M??? Wow.

If he is that valuable, how in the name of Wayne Fontes is their left tackle Greg Robinson? Stafford is going to get pummeled this season with Robinson playing LT.

This note from Paul Howard: Stafford is 4-43 in his career against teams that finished the season with a winning record- 1-21 on the road.

                  12) Rangers wanted the Astros to play their series in Arlington this week, but they didn’t want to flip-flop home series, giving Houston three home games later on this season, which is why the series is being played in Florida. I’m guessing there is now some tension between front offices, if there wasn’t before.

                  11) Dale Sveum is the Royals’ batting coach; Brian Buchanan is his assistant. Has to be a very long week for them, with Kansas City not scoring a run for 43 consecutive innings.

1992 Cubs are the last team to get blanked four games in a row; no team with a DH had ever been shut out in four straight games.

                  10) If you see Chad Whitson umping home plate, know that you have a hitter’s umpire that night. Every game they work may not go over, but they squeeze pitchers, for sure.

Jordan Baker is also a hitters’ umpire, but his strike zone usually widens some as the game goes on. Whitson squeezes pitchers for all nine innings.

                  9) Politics intruded into the CFL this week; the league stepped in and basically vetoed former Baylor coach Art Briles being hired as an assistant coach by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Briles’ players at Baylor got into a lot of off-field trouble and it cost him his job. Briles himself did not commit a crime, but he is being treated as if he did.

                  8) TV evangelist Joel Osteen has a church in Houston that seats 16,000 people? Damn, thats a big church; must take forever to pass the collection baskets there.

                  7) A guy went to Hooters’ Casino in Las Vegas, bet $1.21M on Floyd Mayweather, and netted himself $242,000. Hooters is an unlikely sportsbook for such a large bet to be made.

                  6) Weird moment Sunday; Phillies pitcher Nick Pivetta tossed a pickoff throw to first base, but the runner (Anthony Rizzo) was still standing on first base. Never saw that before; he looked at Pivetta like, “What are you doing?”

                  5) Last four years, the four AFC South teams are a combined 15-28-1 vs spread as a home underdog in non-divisional games.

Last two years, the four AFC West teams are 13-3-1 vs spread when they’re road favorites in non-divisional games.

                  4) Denver’s backup QB Paxton Lynch has an injured throwing shoulder and will miss some games; will the Broncos sign Colin Kaepernick?

As of right now, Denver has starter Trevor Siemian, who is backed up by Kyle Sloter, who played WR, then QB at Southern Miss, then at Northern Colorado. They also have Chad Kelly as a developmental QB, but he is still hurt from his college days and won’t play this year. Denver has to sign another QB for their opener, you would think.

                  3) Tickets for the Texans-Cowboys exhibition game in Dallas Thursday are $25. Proceeds will go to the United Way’s relief fund. Excellent idea.

                  2) Scooter Gennett and Babe Ruth are only two major leaguers ever who hit their 20th homer of the season and also pitched on that same day.

                  1) RIP Jud Heathcote 90, the former Michigan State coach passed away Monday. Spartans have had only two basketball coaches the last 42 years, Heathcote and Tom Izzo.

Heathcote’s 1979 Michigan State team, led by Magic Johnson/Greg Kelser, won a national title, sparking the increased popularity of college basketball, thanks to Magic’s rivalry with Larry Bird.

                  • MLB notebook: Astros' McCullers blasts Rangers
                    August 29, 2017

Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers expressed his displeasure with the Texas Rangers via social media after the teams failed to agree to a scenario in which this week's games would be played in Arlington, Texas.

Instead, the Lone Star State teams will travel to Florida and play their upcoming series at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg with Houston enduring historic flooding from now-Tropical Storm Harvey.

Astros president Reid Ryan told reporters that the Rangers declined a proposed swap of dates that would have Houston host a series initially scheduled for Arlington in late September. McCullers provided his own take on Twitter.

"Classy as always, should be absolutely ashamed," McCullers posted. "Greed never takes off days, apparently. Stay strong #Htown! We hope to be home soon"

Ryan offered the following comment shortly after Major League Baseball announced the relocation of the series, which starts Tuesday:

"We went to the Rangers and said, 'Hey let's switch series. You guys have our home series. We'll take your home series,'" Ryan said. "They rejected that and didn't want to do that. The Rangers wanted us to play the next three days at their place, but they did not want to trade series with us. They wanted all six of our games at their park."

--Kansas City Royals left-hander Danny Duffy was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol in Overland Park, Kan., authorities said.

Duffy was charged on Sunday evening and is scheduled for arraignment on Sept. 19, the Kansas City Star reported.

"We are obviously disappointed in the news we have received regarding Danny Duffy's DUI arrest on Sunday night," Royals general manager Dayton Moore said in a statement. "Danny was not part of the team traveling back from Cleveland on Sunday because he had returned to Kansas City a day earlier to undergo an MRI examination.

"We are still in the early stages of gathering the details, but I do know that Danny has always been accountable as a member of this organization and we expect the same accountability from him as this process moves forward.

"We obviously do not condone anyone driving while under the influence, but this is now a legal matter and we will allow the process to unfold and cannot comment any further."

--The Washington Nationals reinstated shortstop Trea Turner from the 60-day disabled list and optioned infielder Adrian Sanchez to Triple-A Syracuse.

Turner sat out 51 games after suffering a right wrist fracture and returns to a Nationals' team that owns a 13-game lead over the Miami Marlins in the National League East. The 24-year-old still leads Washington in steals (35) and batted .279 with seven homers and 53 runs scored in 68 games before suffering the injury.

--The Texas Rangers activated infielder/outfielder Joey Gallo from the seven-day concussion list and optioned outfielder Ryan Rua to Triple-A Round Rock.

Gallo, who is tied for fourth in the American League with 35 home runs, suffered the concussion in a collision with pitcher Matt Bush while chasing a pop-up against the Chicago White Sox on August 20. He also suffered a non-displaced nasal fracture in the collision.

Gallo is batting .246 with 10 home runs and 18 RBIs in August -- his best numbers in any month this season.

--The Baltimore Orioles reinstated right-hander Dylan Bundy from the bereavement list and optioned left-hander Donnie Hart to Triple-A Norfolk.

Bundy got off to a strong start in 2017 before falling off in June and July but has picked it back up this month, going 3-0 with a 2.67 ERA in four August starts while benefitting from extra rest in between outings.

The 24-year-old is scheduled to start against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday and is looking to record his fifth consecutive quality start.

--St. Louis Cardinals first baseman and Texas native Matt Carpenter already pledged to help residents of his home state recover from the devastating impact of Hurricane Harvey, and his organization is stepping up as well.

Carpenter pledged to donate $10,000 for every home run he hits from now until the end of the season to relief efforts, and the Cardinals on Tuesday announced that they will match his pledge.

Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright also pledged to match Carpenter's $10,000 donation for each homer.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Texas and the entire Gulf Coast," said Bill DeWitt Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for the St. Louis Cardinals. "We want to do our part to help those in need and were inspired by Matt's leadership, as well as his and Adam's spontaneous generosity."

                    • LEADING OFF: Stanton chases record; NL Central showdown
                      August 29, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Wednesday:

                      AUGUST RUSH

Giancarlo Stanton has two games left to match Sammy Sosa's mark for home runs in a month. Stanton tied the record Tuesday for long balls in August with 18, and he's two shy of the 20 Sosa hit in June 1998. Stanton has 51 homers through 131 games, approximating the pace set by Sosa (51) and Mark McGwire (53) when they surpassed Roger Maris' longtime record of 61 home runs in a season in 1998. Stanton will face Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg before Miami returns home to begin a series against Philadelphia on Thursday.

                      CENTRAL SHOWDOWN

Cardinals right-hander Carlos Martinez and Brewers righty Chase Anderson square off to close out a two-game series between NL Central playoff contenders. Martinez (10-9, 3.48 ERA) has won three straight decisions and is 4-1 in his past six starts. Anderson (7-3, 2.87) has allowed three runs over 10 innings in two starts since returning from a left oblique strain.

                      DOUBLE DIP

After getting rained out Tuesday night, the Indians and Yankees play a single-admission doubleheader in New York. Left-hander Jaime Garcia starts the opener for the Yankees. In the second game, it will be rookie Jordan Montgomery (7-6), who will be recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Cleveland will counter with Trevor Bauer (13-8) and Ryan Merritt (1-0). New York slugger Aaron Judge will return to the lineup after sitting out Monday. CC Sabathia (10-5) had been scheduled to pitch for the Yankees but will be pushed back to start Thursday against the AL East-leading Red Sox. Cleveland, which leads the AL Central, has won five straight. The Indians will now play two road doubleheaders in a three-day span, with a day off in between. They have a split doubleheader against Detroit on Friday.

                      BACK ON THE BOARD

Finally off the schneid, the Royals will send Jason Vargas out to face the Rays in a bid to make up ground in the crowded AL wild-card race. Kansas City ended its scoreless streak Tuesday night at 45 innings, three shy of the major league record held by the 1968 Chicago Cubs and 1906 Philadelphia Athletics. Despite losing four straight shutouts during the skid, the Royals are still among eight teams that entered Tuesday within three games of the final AL postseason spot.

                      ON THE MEND

With a four-game lead in the AL East, the Boston Red Sox are trying to get healthy and whole for the stretch drive. Second baseman Dustin Pedroia (left knee) plans to run the bases for the second straight day in Toronto. If all goes well, Pedroia hopes to return to the lineup during Boston's four-game series with the second-place Yankees beginning Thursday night in New York. In addition, David Price (left elbow) is expected to throw off a mound Wednesday for the first time since his July 22 start against the Angels.

                      RAY'S RETURN

Arizona left-hander Robbie Ray (10-5, 3.06 ERA) makes his second start since returning from a scary injury when the Diamondbacks face the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ray was sharp last Thursday, holding the New York Mets to a run in five innings of a 3-2 win in his first start since being struck on the head by a line drive in July. PHILLY TWINBILL

Phillies rookie Rhys Hoskins looks to resume his power-packed start at the plate when Philadelphia and Atlanta play a traditional doubleheader after getting rained out Tuesday night. Hoskins is batting .395 during a 10-game hitting streak and has an RBI in six straight games. His 25 RBIs in August are the most by a Phillies rookie in a month since Willie Montanez had 29 in June 1971. Hoskins failed to homer Monday night, ending his streak at five consecutive games. But he is the fastest player ever to reach 11 home runs, doing it in 18 games and 64 at-bats. The last-place Phillies have gone 12-2 against the Braves this season and won all eight meetings at Citizens Bank Park.

Umpire Everitt leaves game with injury
                        August 29, 2017

DENVER (AP) Home plate umpire Mike Everitt has left the game between the Detroit Tigers and Colorado Rockies in the first inning after being hit by a warmup pitch.

Everitt was crouched behind Tigers catcher James McCann on Tuesday night as starter Michael Fulmer threw warm-up pitches in the middle of the inning. One pitch got past McCann and hit Everitt in the upper right thigh area. He was attended to by a Rockies trainer and left the game.

Tom Woodring moved from second base to home plate and the rest of the game was played with three umpires. The game was delayed 12 minutes.
