        • Tuesday's Diamond Notes
          August 8, 2017

Hottest team: Red Sox (6-0 past six overall, 9-3 past 12 at home)

The Red Sox hit the road for St. Petersburg, looking to ride Chris Sale to another win. However, he is looking to rebound after an uncharacteristically poor performance at home against the Indians last time out. Despite that ugly performance, the Red Sox still won 12-10 against Cleveland, one of their six wins in a row dating back to July 30. Boston's offense is averaging 6.7 runs per game during the six-game winning streak. The BoSox struggled in their most recent trip to the Tropicana, dropping three of four games while getting outscored 10-4 in the three losses. One of those outings was with Sale on the mound, as he was outpitched by Jacob Faria on July 6. Tampa Bay has won five of the past seven meetings between these rivals, but they roll out untested Austin Pruitt for this one. They're just 7-11 over the past 18 games dating back to July 19.

Coldest team: White Sox (0-6 past six games, 4-23 past 27 overall)

The White Sox continue to fumble right along, as they have dropped six in a row. It's their sixth losing streak of five or more games this season, and their third just since July 8. They're not a bad team to fade, although you certainly have to eat a lot of chalk most nights. That includes Tuesday night, as the Astros are between -210 and -220 at most shops as over early Tuesday morning despite the fact they're on the road. Chicago is averaging just 2.7 runs per game during their six-game skid, and only one of their losses has been decided by one or fewer runs. Meanwhile, Houston opens the series with the best road record in the majors at 38-15.

Hottest pitcher: Corey Kluber, Indians (9-3, 2.77 ERA)

The All-Star Kluber takes the ball for the interleague series home opener against the Rockies at Progressive Field. He ranks sixth in the majors in ERA at 2.77, just behind Boston's Chris Sale who will also be in action on Tuesday. He has racked up 172 strikeouts over 123 2/3 innings across 18 starts while yielding just 90 hits with 28 walks. The opposition is also hitting just .201 against him with a sparkling 0.95 WHIP, one of just four starts with a sub-1.00 in the category. The Klubot is even better at home, posting a 7-1 record with a 2.22 ERA across 77 innings over 11 starts while the opponent is hitting just .187 against him.

Coldest pitcher: Julio Teheran, Braves (7-9, 5.10 ERA)

Teheran has been extremely inconsistent this season, slipping two games under .500. He is tied for 10th in the majors, allowing 71 earned runs over 125 1/3 innings across 22 starts. The opponent is also hitting .261 against him this season. He limps into this one after recovering from a thigh injury, and if that's not bad enough he has been atrocious at home. He is 1-7 with a 6.91 ERA over 57 1/3 innings over 11 starts at SunTrust Park and the opponent is hitting .284 against him. He is actually a respectable 6-2 with a 3.57 ERA across his 11 road outings. He was tuned up in Philadelphia on July 28 in his first meeting against the Phillies, allowing eight earned runs and seven hits with three homers in just 4 2/3 innings in a loss.

Biggest UNDER run: Marlins (4-0-1 past five overall)

The 'under' for Miami lately has been a combination of poor offense and some outstanding pitching. Over the past seven outings Miami's offense has generated 3.6 runs per game while allowing just 3.3 runs per outing. That's a perfect combination for under victories at the betting window. The Nationals have played along with the 'under' trend, too, especially at home with the under 3-1 in the past four at Nationals Park. That includes Monday's series opener which went to the home team, 3-2.

Biggest OVER run: Blue Jays (6-2 past eight overall)

The 'over' has connected in six of the past eight outings, as their offense has come alive lately. The Toronto offense is on the move lately, averaging 6.2 runs per game over the past 10 outings. Their pitching has also gone south, allowing 6.5 runs during the same 10-game span. With almost 13 total runs per game, the 'over' is going to be a fairly common result. Lately there haven't been very many teams with that kind of consistency, or inconsistency, in terms of pitching.

Matchup to watch: Rockies vs. Indians

The Indians have opened up a three-game lead in the American League Central, and it's probably a good thing they're in the AL and not the National League. Cleveland has stumbled to a 5-13 record against the NL this season, including a two-game sweep in Coors Field back on June 6-7. The Rockies outscored the Indians 19-4 in the mini series, but that was also in the rarefied air of Denver. The Indians have won 12 of their past 15 games at Progressive Field, while the Rockies are just 5-17 over their past 22 forays away from the Mile High City.

Betcha didn’t know: The Mariners acquired All-Star 1B Yonder Alonso from the Athletics, and now he'll get a chance to face his former mates immediately. He is expected to make his team debut in the opener of the two-game set on Tuesday in Oakland. Alonso sits with a .266 average, career-high 22 homers and 49 RBI in 100 games with the Athletics this season. However, the power for the 30-year-old is completely stunning, as he entered the season with 39 homers through his first 664 major league games. His previous career high was nine homers, set back in 2012, so the power has come out of nowhere for the former University of Miami Hurricanes standout.

Biggest public favorite: Indians (-240) vs. Rockies

Biggest public underdog: Yankees (+125) at Blue Jays

Biggest line move: Indians (-215 to -240) vs. Rockies

PHOENIX (AP) Jake Lamb hit his second career grand slam in the seventh inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied to beat Los Angeles 6-3 on Tuesday night, handing the major league-leading Dodgers their eighth loss in the last 52 games.

Lamb, who also connected for a solo homer in the sixth, was hitting .143 against left-handers this season when he drove Tony Watson's 1-2 pitch off the right-field foul pole to put Arizona up 6-3.

Justin Turner homered twice for the Dodgers, who led 3-2 entering the bottom of the seventh. Watson (5-4) was charged with the loss.

David Hernandez (2-0) got one out for the win and Fernando Rodney worked the ninth for his 26th save in 31 tries.

              RED SOX 2, RAYS 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Chris Sale struck out 13 in eight innings, and the Red Sox earned their seventh straight victory.

Sale (14-4) reached double digits in strikeouts for the 15th time this season. He allowed two hits, and Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth for his 28th save.

The win pushed Boston's AL East lead over the New York Yankees to four games.

Dustin Pedroia, who returned to the lineup as the designated hitter after a stint on the disabled list with left knee inflammation, scored Boston's first run on a fielder's choice in the fourth. A bad throw by Austin Pruitt (6-3) prevented a possible inning-ending double play on Rafael Devers' chopper to the mound.

It was the only run allowed by Pruitt in his fourth major league start. He pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings in a win at Houston last Wednesday.

              INDIANS 4, ROCKIES 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Yan Gomes hit a three-run homer off Greg Holland with two outs in the ninth inning, lifting Corey Kluber and Cleveland to the victory.

After Austin Jackson tied it with a two-out bloop RBI single, Gomes connected on the first pitch from Holland (2-3), driving it into the seats in center field to touch off a wild celebration in Progressive Field.

Gomes flung his helmet and skipped around the bases as the Indians players danced out of their dugout at the improbable walk-off win.

Kluber (10-3) struck out 11 in his second straight complete game. He allowed three hits and walked none.

Charlie Blackmon homered for the Rockies.

              BLUE JAYS 4, YANKEES 2

TORONTO (AP) - Josh Donaldson hit two two-run homers for the Blue Jays, and J.A. Happ won his sixth straight decision against the Yankees.

Donaldson connected twice against CC Sabathia (9-5), who came in with an AL-best 2.29 ERA in 10 road starts. The 2015 AL MVP hit a drive to right-center in the first, and hooked one down the left field line in the third.

It was Donaldson's 12th multihomer game and his second this season, both coming against the Yankees.

Happ (5-8) allowed one run and four hits in 5 2/3 innings, improving to 6-0 in 10 starts against the Yankees since 2014.

Roberto Osuna got three outs for his 29th save in 36 chances.

              MARLINS 7, NATIONALS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) - Miami slugger Giancarlo Stanton hit his career-high and major league-leading 38th homer of the season and drove in three runs.

Stanton crushed a first-pitch fastball from A.J. Cole (1-2) deep into the center-field stands in the fifth for a 4-1 lead following singles by Miguel Rojas and Dee Gordon.

Derek Dietrich also homered and drove in three runs for the Marlins. Gordon's RBI double and Dietrich's two-run single put Miami up 7-1 in the seventh.

Vance Worley (2-2) beat the Nationals for the second time in nine days. He allowed one run in six innings after holding Washington to two hits while pitching seven innings in Miami's 7-0 win on July 31.

              CARDINALS 10, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Yadier Molina, Jedd Gyorko and Randal Grichuk homered, leading St. Louis to its fourth straight win.

Michael Wacha (9-4) allowed a three-run double to Cheslor Cuthbert but otherwise kept the Royals in check, surrendering six hits over six innings to win for the sixth time in seven decisions.

Molina connected against Jason Vargas (13-6) in the fourth and Grichuk and Gyorko connected to highlight the six-run fifth, when the crown-shaped videoboard at Kauffman Stadium suddenly went dark.

About half of it came back online in the seventh, when the Cardinals were tacking on runs.

              WHITE SOX 8, ASTROS 5

CHICAGO (AP) - Rookie Kevan Smith homered and drove in four runs, and the last-place White Sox stopped a six-game losing streak.

Left-hander Derek Holland (6-11) earned his first win since June 13, despite issuing seven walks in 5 2/3 innings. He had been 0-5 in eight starts and one relief appearance since beating Baltimore.

Dallas Keuchel (9-2) allowed a season-high eight runs and 10 hits in four innings for AL-leading Houston. He had a 1.67 ERA when he went on the disabled list for the second time with a neck injury, on June 8. The All-Star left-hander has a 10.50 ERA in three starts since his return.

Tyler Clippard pitched the ninth for his second save.

              METS 5, RANGERS 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Rookie Chris Flexen got his first big league win and hit, and the Mets stopped a four-game losing streak.

Michael Conforto, Yoenis Cespedes and Travis d'Arnaud homered for New York, which led 4-0 after two innings. Cespedes went deep at Citi Field for just the third time this season, his first since June 17. D'Arnaud hit his first at home this year after nine on the road.

Joey Gallo, Adrian Beltre and Robinson Chirinos homered for Texas.

Flexen (1-1) allowed three runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings in his third big league start. A.J. Ramos gave up Chirinos' two-out homer in the ninth, then retired Drew Robinson on a groundout for his 21st save.

Texas' A.J. Griffin (5-3) allowed four runs and four hits in five innings.

              PADRES 7, REDS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jose Pirela had four hits and Yangervis Solarte had a homer among his three hits, powering the Padres to the victory.

San Diego's Luis Perdomo (6-6) escaped threats by inducing three ground-ball double plays - his specialty - while pitching into the seventh.

Cincinnati catcher Tucker Barnhart hit a three-run homer off Jose Torres.

The Padres improved to 4-1 against the Reds, who haven't won a season series from them since 2012. The Reds have gone 7-18 since the All-Star break.

San Diego piled up nine hits and five runs off Sal Romano (2-4), who was in trouble in each of his six innings. Austin Hedges homered for a 5-0 lead in the sixth. Solarte connected for a two-run shot an inning later.

              TWINS 11, BREWERS 4

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Brian Dozier hit his first career grand slam and Max Kepler and Eddie Rosario each homered twice, powering Minnesota to a two-game sweep of Milwaukee.

Matt Garza (5-6) turned in his shortest and worst start of the season with eight hits and eight runs allowed in 3 1/3 innings for the Brewers, who fell to 4-11 in their last 15 road games.

Twins starter Adalberto Mejia was pulled with one out in the fourth inning with pain in his upper left arm, after allowing seven hits and three runs. Tyler Duffey (1-3) relieved with two innings for his first victory of the season, and Dillon Gee struck out five over four scoreless innings for his first career save.

              PIRATES 6, TIGERS 3

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Andrew McCutchen hit his 23rd homer, leading Pittsburgh to its fifth win in six games.

Pirates right-hander Chad Kuhl (5-7) allowed three runs and five hits in six innings in his second straight win. He also picked up the first two RBIs of his big league career on a two-run single in the fourth off Matthew Boyd (5-6).

McCutchen took Boyd to the seats in center field leading off the fourth for his franchise-record 13th interleague home run. David Freese added two hits for the Pirates, and Felipe Rivero worked a perfect ninth for his 10th save.

Detroit has dropped four in a row.

              PHILLIES 5, BRAVES 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Odubel Herrera hit a two-run homer, Zach Eflin pitched seven strong innings following his recall from the minors, and the Phillies continued their season-long mastery of the Braves.

After Maikel Franco drove in Freddie Galvis with a line-drive single to right field in the fifth inning, Herrera reached down to pull a low pitch from Julio Teheran (7-10) into the restaurant behind the right-field wall.

Freddie Freeman hit a first-inning homer off Eflin, who was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley before the game and earned his first win of the season. Eflin (1-3) allowed two runs and seven hits.

The Phillies have won 10 of 12 against Atlanta this season.

Hector Neris pitched a perfect ninth for his 12th save in 15 chances.

Wednesday’s List of 13: Random notes on AFC teams…..

Baltimore: With Flacco hurting, who will the QB be? Backup Mallett is shaky, at best. Ravens ran ball for only 91.4 yards/game LY (28th). Ravens lost their last six road games- they allowed 28.5 pts/game during 1-3 stumble at end of year, after they started season 7-5.

Buffalo: Another new head coach, and now they have 4th offensive coordinator in last four years; Bills finished 3-7 LY after a 4-2 start, were 2-6 in games decided by 7 or less points. Haven’t been in playoffs since 1999, longest drought in league, longer than even the Browns.

Cincinnati: Dropped from 7th in scoring in 2015 to 24th LY, then two offensive linemen left in free agency last winter. Missed playoffs LY for first time in six years, but Marvin Lewis is 0-7 in playoff games. Bengal fans have forgotten how bad the Bengals were before Lewis got there.

Cleveland: Who is the QB? Browns are 2-10-1 vs spread as a home underdog last two years- five of their 15 losses were by 6 or less points. Cleveland hasn’t won much; since 2010, Browns are 10-17-2 vs spread in game following a win. Cleveland last made the playoffs in 2002.

Denver: Have new coach, young QB’s, after going 9-7 in first season since Peyton Manning retired, missing playoffs for first time in six years. Broncos won last five season openers, all at home; they open at home against the Chargers on a Monday night this season.

Houston: Finished 9-7 in all three of O’Brien’s seasons; he is 16-5-1 vs spread as a favorite with the Texans, 12-4-1 at home— he is 9-15-1 as an underdog. Houston is 12-7-1 vs spread in game following their last 20 losses. How long before rookie QB Watson plays?

Indianapolis: How is Luck’s shoulder? Without him, Colts are screwed. Indy made playoffs in 12 of last 16 years, but missed the last two years (8-8/8-8). Colts finished 10th in yardage LY. Indy lost four of last five season openers- they visit the Rams in Week 1 this year.

Jacksonville: Tom Coughlin runs franchise now; they’re 22-74 the last six years, are -26 in turnovers in their last 32 games. Jags will try to run ball more to take pressure off QB Bortles, who is struggling in training camp this summer. Since 2012, Jax is 13-26-2 vs spread at home.

Kansas City: Chiefs are 43-21 in regular season under Reid, 1-3 in playoff games- they’re 11-2 vs spread as road favorites under Reid, 13-17 as home favorites. New OC Matt Nagy played in the Arena League for six years; Chiefs are +30 in turnovers in their last 32 regular season games.

LA Chargers: Year of transition; Bolts will play in 30,000-seat soccer stadium the next three years. Philip Rivers will be 36 in December; new coach Anthony Lynn has two very experienced coordinators, smart of him to do. Chargers were 8-16 vs spread at home the last three years.

Miami: Jay Cutler (68-71 career record) gets $10M to try and salvage the Dolphins’ season, with Ryan Tannehill (knee) out for at least half the year. In 11 years, Cutler is 1-1 in playoff games. Miami was 9-1 LY when they scored more than 17 points, 1-6 if they scored 17 or less points.

New England: Have had same OC/DC since 2012; they’re +40 in turnovers the last four years, are 17-8-3 vs spread as home favorites since ’13, covering last seven tries as a double digit fave. Offensive line was healthy LY, after using 39 different line combinations in 2015.

NJ Jets: Their long snapper is having a rough camp; they’re looking at new guys for that job. 38-year old McCown was signed for year to play QB; their two young backup QB’s are suspects. Since ’07, Jets are 5-13-1 vs spread as a home favorite in divisional games, but 8-3 as home dogs.

Oakland: Made playoffs LY for first time since 2002; they were +16 in turnovers LY, after being -23 in turnovers previous three years combined. Oakland is 12-3 vs spread on road under Del Rio, 8-2 as road dogs. Raiders made change at OC this year, promoting QB coach Downing.

Pittsburgh: Steelers were 4-5 at one point LY, then won nine games in row before losing AFC title game in Foxboro. Pitt is 18-12 vs spread as a favorite last two years, 9-3 as non-division home favorite the last three years; they’re 12-5 in last 17 games as a favorite of 3 or less points.

Tennessee: Had first winning season since 2011 LY; still haven’t made playoffs since 2008- their last playoff win was in ’03. Jumped from 30th to 11th in yards gained LY; six of their nine wins were by 6 or less points. Titans were even in turnovers LY; they were -24 from 2013-15.

                • MLB notebook: Mariners' Hernandez to miss 3-4 weeks
                  August 8, 2017

The Seattle Mariners suffered a big blow Tuesday when it was revealed right-hander Felix Hernandez will miss three to four weeks with bursitis in his pitching shoulder.

Hernandez was scratched from his Saturday start against the Kansas City Royals and placed on the 10-day disabled list. Medical tests performed Monday in Seattle detected the seriousness of the injury.

In addition, right-hander David Phelps was placed on the disabled list with an impingement in his pitching elbow. He is slated to miss 2-to-3 weeks. Phelps was injured during Sunday's game against Kansas City and departed after facing one batter.

Seattle is in the mix for an American League wild-card berth and the loss of the two pitchers could hurt that quest.

Hernandez, a former Cy Young Award winner, is just 5-4 with a 4.28 ERA this season but still ranks as the club's second-best starter behind left-hander James Paxton.

--Chicago White Sox right fielder Avisail Garcia returned from his rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte and was reinstated from the 10-day disabled list, the team announced.

Garcia, 26, takes the roster spot of third baseman Matt Davidson, who the White Sox placed on the 10-day DL on Monday with a right wrist contusion.

Garcia, a first-time All-Star in 2017, is batting .303 with 13 home runs and 54 RBIs through 88 games with Chicago this season. He was placed on the DL retroactive to July 26 with a strained right thumb and missed 12 games.

Davidson, 26, was scheduled to return from his wrist injury Sunday against the Red Sox in Boston after being listed as the starting designated hitter, but was a late scratch before first pitch. He is batting .238 with a team-high 22 homers and 51 RBIs in 88 games this season.

--Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Alex Cobb was placed on the 10-day disabled with turf toe in his right big toe, the team announced.

The move was made retroactive to Aug. 6. Cobb told reporters he expects to be ready when his 10 days on the DL conclude.

Cobb last pitched Saturday when he gave up one run and five hits over six innings during a 3-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. He is 9-8 with a 3.80 ERA in 23 starts this season.

Left-hander Blake Snell was recalled from Triple-A Durham and will start Thursday's game against the Cleveland Indians. Snell is 0-6 with a 4.98 ERA in 14 major league starts this season.

--Texas Rangers right-hander Andrew Cashner, who was scheduled to start the opener of a two-game series against the New York Mets, was scratched due to a stiff neck and replaced by Wednesday's scheduled starter, A.J. Griffin.

Rangers manager Jeff Banister said Cashner woke up with a stiff neck Tuesday morning and called him in the early afternoon to let him know he didn't think he'd be able to take the mound.

Texas also placed right-handed reliever Keone Kela on the 10-day disabled list due to right shoulder stiffness and purchased the contract of right-hander Ricardo Rodriguez from Double-A Frisco.

The club also made a minor trade later in the afternoon when it dealt right-hander Ernesto Frieri to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for cash considerations. Frieri, who appeared in six games for Texas earlier this season, was pitching at Triple-A Round Rock, for whom he had a 1.42 ERA in seven appearances.

--The Oakland Athletics recalled top prospect Matt Olson from Triple-A Nashville and are expected to give him a long look in terms of being the club's new first baseman.

Oakland traded All-Star first baseman Yonder Alonso to the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, a move that gives the 23-year-old Olson another shot in the majors.

Olson batted just .196 with 22 strikeouts in 51 at-bats with the Athletics earlier this season, but the left-handed hitter created some positive vibes with four homers during the stint. At Nashville, Olson was batting .272 with 23 homers and 60 RBIs.

Oakland also outrighted catcher Ryan Lavarnway to Nashville. Lavarnway had been designated for assignment on Saturday.

--The New York Yankees recalled right-handed pitcher Bryan Mitchell from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Mitchell, 26, takes the roster spot of left-hander Jordan Montgomery after he was demoted to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday. Mitchell is 1-1 with a 4.29 ERA in 13 appearances (one start) with the Yankees this season.

The former 16th round pick of the Yankees in the 2009 amateur draft last pitched in the majors on July 17, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts in a five-inning spot start against the Twins in Minnesota.

Mitchell is 2-3 with a 3.44 ERA in 12 starts with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season.

                  • LEADING OFF: MadBum vs Cubs; Swanson returning?
                    August 8, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Wednesday:

                    FINDING HIS GROOVE

San Francisco's Madison Bumgarner, 1-2 despite a 2.78 ERA in five starts since his return from an April 20 dirt bike accident, faces the visiting Chicago Cubs. Bumgarner is 8-2 with a 2.25 ERA in 12 regular-season starts against the Cubs, including 5-0 with a 1.74 ERA in his last six outings vs. Chicago.

                    ---

                    SWANSON WATCH

Atlanta rookie shortstop Johan Camargo, who took over as the starter when Dansby Swanson was demoted to Triple-A Gwinnett on July 27, bruised a bone in his right knee when running onto the field at the start of Tuesday night's game. Shortly after the injury, Swanson was pulled out of Gwinnett's lineup, a possible indication he could be headed back to Atlanta.

                    DIFFERENT DEMOGRAPHIC

When the Brewers and Twins take their two-game interleague series east for the Milwaukee edition on Wednesday, the starting pitchers will have an age gap of 20 years. Brewers right-hander Brandon Woodruff will take the mound after throwing 6 1/3 scoreless innings in his major league debut last week. Minnesota right-hander Bartolo Colon, who's 44, will make his 518th start. He's coming off his first victory for the Twins, a complete game last week.

                    REDS WRECKER

Jose Pirela tries to extend his season-long hitting spree against Cincinnati. The outfielder had his first career multihomer game on Monday, and followed it with four hits on Tuesday night. In five games against the Reds this season, he's 10 for 20 with three doubles and a pair of homers.

                    • Umpire Joe West suspended 3 games
                      August 8, 2017

NEW YORK (AP) Joe West, the major leagues' senior umpire, has been suspended for three days without pay for comments he made about Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre.

In a USA Today report published June 20 timed to coincide with the umpire's 5,000th regular-season game, West said ''it's got to be Adrian Beltre'' when asked who was the biggest complainer in the major leagues.

''Every pitch you call that's a strike, he says, `Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!' I had a game with him recently and the pitch was right down the middle. He tells me, `That ball is outside,''' West was quoted as saying.

''I told him, `You may be a great ballplayer, but you're the worst umpire in the league. You stink,''' West also was quoted as saying.

West was to have worked the Los Angeles Dodgers-Arizona Diamondbacks series in Phoenix, but the World Umpires Association said Tuesday that West was serving the first game of the suspension. It said Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred told the union in an Aug. 3 letter the discipline created an ''appearance of lack of impartiality.''

''Joking interactions between umpires and players are a routine part of the game,'' the union said in a statement. ''We disagree strongly with the decision to punish Joe West simply for sharing a humorous exchange with a player.''

                      MLB did not comment.

''I don't think that it was necessary to suspend him,'' Beltre said after the Rangers' 5-4 loss to the New York Mets. ''Obviously, I know that he was kidding and after it happened a couple of weeks ago he came back home and I asked him exactly what happened and he told me he was just kidding with the reporter.''

The 64-year-old West made his big league debut in September 1976 and trails only Bill Klemm (5,375) and Bruce Froemming (5,163) among regular-season games worked. West's 123 postseason games are 10 behind Gerry Davis' record.

''I play around with him. He plays around with me. And that was it,'' Beltre said. ''I didn't think it was a big deal. I'm sad that it happened.''

Rangers manager Jeff Banister did not fault West.

''There's no part of me that ever would think that any person - especially Joe West - would be partial to anything,'' Banister said.
