    Double-Play Picks

Los Angeles Dodgers at Atlanta Braves (+210, 8.5)*

The Dodgers look to be cruising to their fifth consecutive National League West title - they are the current favorites to win the World Series at 9/4, they hit a home run by acquiring Yu Darvish at the trade deadline and they have won 20 of their last 23 games.

Funny thing is, all three of those losses have come to the same team, a team you wouldn’t expect if you haven’t been playing close attention. That would be the Atlanta Braves.

Atlanta has played the Dodgers tough this year splitting their six meetings thus far and outscoring them 31-23 in the process. However, the Dodgers know this and will have revenge on their minds when they play the rubber match of their three-game set in Atlanta Thursday night.

Speaking of revenge, Dodgers starter Alex Wood will be looking for some in this matchup as well. Wood had allowed just 15 earned runs in his first 14 starts for the Dodgers this season, before the Braves (his former team) jumped all over him for seven earned runs on nine hits overs 4.2 innings.

The Dodgers lefty has struggled in his last two starts, but his overall numbers are outstanding at 12-1 with a 2.38 ERA and a 0.986 WHIP. On the road, he is 4-0 with a 1.56 ERA and a 0.917 WHIP. The Dodgers are also 10-3 against the runline in his last 13 starts.

Atlanta counters with a southpaw of their own in rookie Sean Newcomb. The 24-year-old got his career off to a good start, allowing just four earned runs in his first four starts. Since then, it has been more of a struggle. The Braves have lost his last five starts, while he has pitched to a 7.61 ERA with a WHIP of 1.860.

Expect the Dodgers to exact some revenge Thursday night.

    *Pick: Dodgers -1.5 (-145)

Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Angels (-160, 9)*

The Phillies and Angels meet Thursday night in Anaheim for the final game of their interleague series. The Halos dominated the first two games of the series as the Philadelphia offense has struggled against the Angels' mediocre pitching staff.

That mediocre Angels' pitching staff will run its best starter out to the mound tonight. Parker Bridwell may be new on the scene, but he has quickly established himself as the best arm in their rotation. The Angels are 7-1 in his eight career starts and he owns an ERA of 2.83. Bridwell has been especially stingy over his last four outings with a team win/loss of 4-0, an ERA of 1.69, and a WHIP of 0.90.

Philly will send out right-hander Jerad Eickhoff and he has proven over the last few weeks that he is capable of spinning a very good start and holding his opponents down on the score sheet. In four of his last five starts he has held the opposing team to two runs or less and his ERA over those five outings is a very solid 2.89.

Both clubs, of course, feature really bad offenses. The Angels rank last in the American League in almost every offensive category - most notably runs scored (456) and team OPS (.704). The Phillies rank second from the bottom in the National League in runs scored (422) and sit in the bottom five in every other offensive category.

Since this is an interleague matchup, the recent meetings go back a long way. Even so, it's worth noting that Under is 10-1-1 in the last 12 head-to-head meetings (dating back to 2003).

    *Pick: Under 9*

    Yesterday's Picks: 0-2
    Season To Date: 103-94-10

    *Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

Streaking:* Sonny Gray, New York Yankees (6-5, 3.42 ERA, $-66)

Monday’s non-waiver trade deadline was highlighted by two big moves by two of baseball’s biggest franchises. Yu Darvish to the Dodgers and Sonny Gray to Yankees. The latter makes his first start in pinstripes today and if he can continue the pace he was on in Oakland, the Yankees will be dangerous.

Over his last five starts, Gray owns a 1.39 ERA and a WHIP of .8351.

Gray gets the ball in Cleveland against Corey Kluber in what could be a Game 1 playoff preview and the Yankees are +120 dogs.
    *
Slumping:* Trevor Cahill, Kansas City Royals (4-3, 4.15 ERA, $525)

In one of the more under-the-radar, deadline moves the Kansas City Royals traded for relievers Brandon Maurer, Ryan Butcher and starter Trevor Cahill. Cahill makes his second start for the Royals and things didn’t go so well the first time. The Red Sox shelled the righty for five runs in four innings.

In his last two trips to the mound (one with Kansas City and one with San Diego), Cahill’s ERA is 11.74 with a WHIP of 2.7392. Not what you want to see in the first week of August heading into a playoff push.

Cahill and Royals are -130 home chalk against the Mariners.

    *Thursday's Top Trends*

    * The Cincinnati Reds are 8-0 in their last eight meetings with the Pirates in Pittsburgh. +150 today @ Pirates.
    * The Baltimore Orioles are 8-0 in Chris Tillman's last eight starts vs. Detroit. -135 today vs. Tigers.
    * The Cleveland Indians are 10-1 in their last 11 home games. -155 today vs. Yankees.
    * The Tampa Bay Rays are 1-7 in Blake Snell's last eight starts. +140 today @ Astros.

*Weather To Keep An Eye On*

There is a slight chance of rain and thunderstorms in Colorado and Cleveland. The Rockies are hosting the New York Mets and thunderstorms are in the forecast for late in the afternoon and could impact the later innings. Jim Reynolds might be a little loose with the strike zone to get this game done before the storm rolls in. The opposite is the case in Cleveland where first pitch could get pushed because of rain and thunderstorms but they should be able to get this in as the weather should improve as the night progresses.

The forecast is calling for a 30-50 percent chance of rain in Minnesota and a 14-18 mile per hour wind going left to right across the diamond.

The most notable hitters wind today will be at AT&T Park in San Francisco where the Athletics are in town and will be greeted with a 12-14 mile per hour blowing to straight center field. The total is currently sitting at 8.5.

    *Ump Of The Day*

Dan Iassogna will be calling balls and strikes today at SunTrust Park and that is interesting because the juggernaut Dodgers are in town. Iassogna is near the top of our Homer Umpire table at 13-4 (76.5 percent) for the season and 10 for the last 11. Adding to that streak, the Braves have won five of the last six games that Iassogna has been behind the plate.

That’s a bit of home bias and the Braves will need every bit of it.

The Braves are massive +210 home dogs against the major league leading Dodgers.

    • MLB roundup: Goldschmidt's 3 HRs power D-backs past Cubs
      August 3, 2017

CHICAGO -- Paul Goldschmidt hit three home runs, including a go-ahead solo shot in the ninth inning, and drove in a career-high six runs to lift the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 10-8 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Thursday.

J.D. Martinez also homered in the ninth off Chicago closer Wade Davis (2-1), who worked the ninth following a 30-minute rain delay, the third delay of the day.

Fernando Rodney got the save by pitching a scoreless ninth for Arizona, which took two of three games from the defending World Series champions. Rodney walked two before striking out Ian Happ and Jason Heyward to close out the victory.

Jake Barrett (1-0) pitched two-thirds of an inning to earn the win. Zack Greinke allowed six runs and nine hits while striking out eight in six innings while Cubs starter Jose Quintana yielded six runs and six hits with six strikeouts in five innings.

      Indians 5, Yankees 1

CLEVELAND -- Corey Kluber pitched a three-hitter for his third complete game of the season as Cleveland defeated New York.

Kluber (9-3) struck out 11 and walked one. The Yankees' only run came on a solo homer by Gary Sanchez in the seventh inning. Francisco Lindor homered and Yan Gomes had two RBIs for the Indians, who snapped their three-game losing streak. Lindor extended his hitting streak to a career-high 13 games.

In his New York debut, Sonny Gray (6-6) pitched six innings, allowing four runs (two earned) and four hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

      Dodgers 7, Braves 4

ATLANTA -- Alex Wood atoned for his only loss of the season as Los Angeles avoided its first series defeat since early June with a victory over Atlanta.

Leadoff hitter Chris Taylor backed Wood's solid six innings with a three-hit game that included a two-run homer and three runs as the Dodgers improved to 41-7 in their last 48 games. The only three losses in their past 24 games were to the Braves.

Wood (13-1), who gave up nine runs (seven earned) in 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Braves on July 21, allowed a run and seven hits Thursday. Atlanta rookie second baseman Ozzie Albies belted a three-run homer for his first major league hit.

Red Sox 9, White Sox 5

BOSTON -- Rick Porcello, backed by two-run homers from rookie sensation Rafael Devers and Mookie Betts, battled through 5 1/3 innings for his first win since June 23 as Boston topped Chicago.

The Red Sox, who have broken out of their hitting slump by scoring 27 runs in their past three games, had given the reigning American League Cy Young winner Porcello (5-14) four runs of support while he lost four straight starts.

Andrew Benintendi, rested for two games to deal with a batting slump, had three hits, an RBI, two runs and two walks for Boston. Hanley Ramirez drove in two for the Red Sox.

      Brewers 2, Cardinals 1

MILWAUKEE -- Jesus Aguilar homered for the second consecutive game, and Matt Garza worked into the sixth inning as Milwaukee won a series for only the second time since the All-Star break.

Garza (5-5), fresh off a short stint on the disabled list for a strained right calf, held St. Louis to a run on four hits and two walks while striking out four over 5 2/3 innings. Garza retired 11 of his first 12 batters.

Michael Wacha went four innings for the Cardinals, allowing one run -- the solo homer by Aguilar in the third inning -- on five hits and three walks while striking out five. Keon Broxton's RBI single off Brett Cecil (1-4) in the fifth inning made it 2-1.

      Rockies 5, Mets 4

DENVER -- Nolan Arenado drew a bases-loaded walk with one out in the ninth inning as Colorado won the rubber match of its series with New York.

Hansel Robles (6-3) hit Jonathan Lucroy to open the ninth, and pinch hitter Pat Valaika sacrificed the runner to second. After Charlie Blackmon was intentionally walked, DJ LeMahieu walked on five pitches to load the bases.

Robles walked Arenado on six pitches, throwing a 3-2 pitch over Arenado's head to the backstop. Closer Greg Holland (2-1) worked the ninth, pitching for the first time since he cut his right index finger reaching for a knife in soapy water Tuesday.

      Rays 5, Astros 3

HOUSTON -- Steven Souza Jr. homered and delivered a go-ahead two-run double as Tampa Bay rallied past Houston.

Souza, hampered by a left foot contusion, clubbed his 23rd home run and limped noticeably around the bases in the sixth inning. In the seventh, his two-out double to left field off Astros All-Star reliever Chris Devenski snapped a 3-3 tie and scored Lucas Duda and Evan Longoria.

The Astros matched their season-long losing streak at three games while falling for the sixth time in eight games.

      Royals 6, Mariners 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Lorenzo Cain and Melky Cabrera singled home runs in the decisive seventh inning as Kansas City downed Seattle.

Brandon Moss belted a pair of home runs and drove in three for the Royals, who are 4-0 versus the Mariners this season. Ryan Buchter (1-0), acquired from San Diego on July 24, picked up the victory with a one-pitch out to end the seventh.

Emilio Pagan (0-2) gave up the runs in the seventh, one of them unearned after a Danny Valencia error. Cain's hit broke a 3-3 tie, while Cabrera followed to make it 5-3.

      Angels 5, Phillies 4

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Andrelton Simmons doubled in the eighth inning and scored the winning run on a wild pitch, giving Los Angeles a series sweep of Philadelphia.

Yusmeiro Petit (3-0) threw two scoreless innings for the win, and Bud Norris worked the ninth for his 17th save. The victory was the fifth in six games for the Angels, keeping them three games behind Kansas City for the second American League wild-card spot.

Mike Trout hit his 21st home run of the season for Los Angeles. Rookie Nick Williams belted his fifth homer for the Phillies.

      Tigers 7, Orioles 5

BALTIMORE -- Ian Kinsler and Justin Upton hit first-inning homers as Detroit snapped Baltimore's five-game winning streak.

The Orioles pulled to within 7-5 in the eighth inning on a solo homer by Tim Beckham off Edward Mujica, who was recalled from Triple-A Toledo prior to the game. Shane Greene picked up his third save with a scoreless ninth.

Chris Tillman (1-7) struggled for Baltimore, allowing seven runs (five earned) on six hits in two-plus innings. He is winless in his past 14 starts and has an 8.10 ERA.

      Rangers 4, Twins 1

MINNEAPOLIS -- Joey Gallo crushed a three-run homer and A.J. Griffin cruised through six innings in his return from the disabled list as Texas beat Minnesota.

Gallo's 29th home run of the year was another towering shot for the big slugger, who has eight homers in his past 13 games and four in his past three.

Griffin (5-2) allowed two hits and a walk, surrendering one run and striking out four batters. Adalberto Mejia (4-5) gave up four runs on seven hits and three walks in four innings.

      Pirates 6, Reds 0

PITTSBURGH -- Chad Kuhl pitched seven scoreless innings to highlight Pittsburgh's victory over Cincinnati.

After allowing two runs in 5 1/3 innings in his previous start, Kuhl (4-7) built on that performance Thursday for his first win since July 6. He went seven innings for the second time in 22 starts this season, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out six.

A.J. Schugel and Dovydas Neverauskas each pitched a scoreless inning to cap the four-hit shutout. Andrew McCutchen and David Freese drove in two runs apiece for the Pirates.

      Giants 11, A's 2

SAN FRANCISCO -- Ty Blach tossed eight innings and hit his first career homer, a three-run shot, as San Francisco routed Oakland.

Blach allowed six hits and two runs, walked one and struck out four.

Brandon Belt hit a two-run homer, and Jarrett Parker, just off the disabled list, had three hits and three RBIs for the Giants.

      • Friday’s six-pack

        — Paul Goldschmidt hit three HR’s Thursday in a 10-8 Arizona win that had three rain delays.

        — Colorado 5, Mets 4— Nolan Arenado had the walk-off walk for the Rockies.

        — Cardinals’ WR Larry Fitzgerald has visited 97 countries. Not sure if I can name 97 countries.

        — NFL footballs are made in Ada, Ohio.

        — There is a Chick-fil-A within walking distance of my hotel; at 2pm Thursday, the line at the drive-thru window was wrapped around the building. We need a Chick-fil-A in Albany.

        — Rumors are that John Harbaugh/Ozzie Newsome want to sign Colin Kaepernick, but the owner is hesitant about signing him.

        *******************************

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……

        13) Pretty cool that Lorenzo Neal will be the presenter for LaDanian Tomlinson at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony Saturday night. Neal was the fullback for the Chargers who cleared holes for Tomlinson for most of his career; now he is leading his way into the Hall of Fame.

        12) Denmark’s flag is flying over Tom Benson Stadium here; Morten Andersen lived in Denmark for a few years until moving here as a kid.

        11) Jets’ owner Woody Johnson was named the US ambassador to the United Kingdom.

        10) Dallas Cowboys’ backup QB Kellen Moore is the only lefty QB on any NFL roster. He was 50-3 as a starter at Boise State.

        9) Blaine Gabbert is competing with Drew Stanton for the backup QB job in Arizona; he is in his 7th NFL season, playing for his third team, 8th head coach, 7th offensive coordinator. He played really well last night against Dallas.

        8) In 1989, Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys for $150M; now Forbes Magazine says they’re worth $4.2B. If there was a Money Hall of Fame, Mr Jones would be in there, too.

        7) Four oldest active players in the NFL are all punters/kickers; Tom Brady is the 5th-oldest active player— he turned 40 on Thursday.

        6) Tony Romo/Jim Nantz were in Canton last night, doing a practice broadcast as Romo crams for his first season as a TV analyst. Will be interesting to hear what he has to say next month.

        5) Nick Saban has won five national titles at Alabama, with four different play callers. He has to be tough to work for; that, and he wins a lot, so his assistants move on to better jobs.

        4) Miami QB Ryan Tannehill had a non-contact knee injury Thursday; Dolphins fear he will need season-ending knee surgery, however no decision on the operation has been made yet.

There will be second and third opinions; Tannehill still could decide to rest it for six to eight weeks and try to come back without season-ending surgery. There are rumors that Jay Cutler may delay retirement to come back and he the Dolphins’ starting QB.

        3) Weird summer in the NFL; Luck-Newton-Flacco-Tannehill are all hurt. Hard to have a great training camp if your quarterback isn’t practicing.

        2) Steph Curry shot 74 (+4) on the web.com tour Thursday. Impressive, competing against pros. His caddy is Jonnie West, son of Jerry West, who played college ball at West Virginia a few years ago.

        1) Rico Gathers caught a TD pass for Dallas last night; he was a basketball player at Baylor and a good one— he didn’t play football from his 8th grade season until last year, but he has a shot to make the Cowboys’ squad now. Interesting story, like Antonio Gates with the Chargers.

          • MLB notebook: Tigers place Fulmer on disabled list
            August 3, 2017

Detroit Tigers right-hander Michael Fulmer, the American League Rookie of the Year in 2016, was placed on the 10-day disabled list with right elbow ulnar neuritis, or inflammation, on Thursday.

There is no set timeline for Fulmer's return, but there is no ligament damage, according to manager Brad Ausmus.

Fulmer is 10-9 with a 3.59 ERA in 21 starts. The Tigers have not decided which pitcher will take in Fulmer's spot Saturday against Baltimore.

In a corresponding move, Detroit selected the contract of right-handed reliever Edward Mujica from Triple-A Toledo.

--Colorado Rockies closer Greg Holland returned from a cut on his right index finger, an injury that manager Bud Black said occurred Tuesday in a kitchen accident.

Holland picked up the win over the New York Mets on Thursday when he pitched one inning of scoreless relief.

Holland leads the majors with 33 saves, but was unavailable Tuesday and Wednesday because of the injury.

The 31-year-old Holland had missed all of 2016 because of Tommy John surgery.

--The Oakland Athletics activated right-hander Kendall Graveman from the 10-day disabled list in order to make Thursday's scheduled start against the San Francisco Giants.

Graveman, who was Oakland's Opening Day starter, has missed the past two-plus months due to a shoulder injury. The 26-year-old is 2-2 with a 3.83 ERA in eight starts.

Oakland optioned right-hander Daniel Gossett to Triple-A Nashville to open up a roster spot. Gossett was 3-6 with a 5.09 ERA in 10 starts for the Athletics.

            • LEADING OFF: Darvish makes Dodgers debut; Judge off bench
              August 4, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Friday:

              YU TURN

Yu Darvish makes his Los Angeles Dodgers debut when the top team in the majors takes on Jacob deGrom (12-4, 3.29 ERA) and the New York Mets in a marquee pitching matchup at Citi Field. The Dodgers acquired Darvish from Texas just before Monday's trade deadline.

              OCTOBER ON MY MIND

In a potential playoff preview, the Nationals visit the Cubs for a Wrigley Field matinee as the teams begin a three-game series. Chicago has lost consecutive games for the first time since the All-Star break, trimming its NL Central lead over Milwaukee to 1+ games. ''They've turned it up,'' Washington manager Dusty Baker said. ''There will be a lot of fan excitement.'' Kyle Hendricks (4-3, 3.80 ERA) makes his third start for the Cubs since coming off the disabled list July 24. Tanner Roark (8-7, 4.93) is on the mound for the Nationals.

              OFF THE BENCH

Slumping slugger Aaron Judge is expected back in the lineup when left-hander Jaime Garcia makes his Yankees debut at Cleveland. Judge, who leads the majors with 34 homers, was rested in the series opener Thursday night. ''I just felt maybe a day off would do him some good,'' manager Joe Girardi said. Judge is batting .164 (11 of 67) with four homers, nine RBIs and 29 strikeouts since the All-Star break. His batting average has dropped from .329 to .299, and the 25-year-old rookie struck out in 21 consecutive games. ''Mechanically, he's a little bit off,'' Girardi said. Struggling designated hitter Matt Holliday also is expected to play for New York after getting a night off Thursday. Garcia, who began the season with Atlanta, made one start for Minnesota before the Twins traded him to the Yankees last weekend.

              BIG BOPPER

Paul Goldschmidt tries to follow up a huge game at the plate when Arizona faces Madison Bumgarner (1-4, 2.92 ERA) in San Francisco. Goldschmidt hit three long homers Thursday in Chicago, snapping a ninth-inning tie when he connected off All-Star closer Wade Davis, and the Diamondbacks pulled out a rain-delayed victory over the Cubs. Goldschmidt's first career three-homer game gave him 25 for the season, and his six RBIs matched a career high. Arizona remained percentage points ahead of Colorado for the top NL wild card. Bumgarner makes his fifth start since returning from the disabled list July 15. Against the Dodgers on Sunday, he tossed seven scoreless innings.

                        • Friday's Diamond Notes
                          August 4, 2017

Hottest team: Marlins (9-4 last 13) at Braves

The Dodgers have won 41 of their last 48 games, but the National League team with the second-best record since May 28 is Miami. The Marlins won’t catch the Nationals in the NL East, while sitting 9 ½ games behind Colorado for the second Wild Card berth in the National League. However, Miami has captured four consecutive series, including taking two of three at home from Washington this week.

Miami makes the short trip to Atlanta to face the Braves for the first time since mid-June. Southpaw Adam Conley has strung together three consecutive quality starts since the All-Star break, including victories over Texas and Cincinnati. Conley has been excellent away from Marlins Park this season by compiling a 3-0 record and 1.54 ERA, while going 2-0 in three starts against Atlanta in 2016.

Coldest team: White Sox (3-17 last 20) at Red Sox

Chicago has folded up shop at this point and is looking ahead to the future. Since the All-Star break, the Sox have won just three times, with two of those victories coming in walk-off fashion earlier this week at home against the Indians and Blue Jays. The Sox dropped the opener of their four-game series at Boston on Thursday, 9-5, while falling to 2-6 in their last eight Game 1’s of a series.

Left-hander Carlos Rodon struggled throughout most of July before rebounding with a solid outing in a 3-1 win over Cleveland on Sunday. Rodon scattered six hits and allowed one earned run while striking out nine in 6.2 innings. Chicago faces southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez tonight, looking to snap a nine-game skid against left-handed starting pitchers.

Hottest pitcher: Brad Peacock, Astros (9-1, 2.62 ERA)

The last time Houston faced Toronto in the game prior to the All-Star break, the Astros pulverized the Blue Jays, 19-1. The two teams hook up at Minute Maid Park for a weekend series as Peacock tossed six scoreless innings in the 18-run blowout last month. With Dallas Keuchel recently activated from the disabled list and Lance McCullers, Jr. struggling, Peacock has been a nice surprise as the Astros have won each of his last six starts.

Coldest pitcher: Yu Darvish, Dodgers (6-9, 4.01 ERA)

Darvish makes his Los Angeles debut after getting dealt by Texas earlier in the week. The right-hander finished his Texas tenure by winning only one of his final 12 starts, while the Rangers compiled a 2-10 record in that span. The final start in a Rangers’ uniform was his worst of the season, allowing 10 earned runs in in 3.2 innings of a 22-10 drubbing at the hands of the Marlins on July 26. The Dodgers swept a four-game series from the Mets in June as Los Angeles will look to stay hot at Citi Field, but face Jacob deGrom, who owns an 8-1 record in his last nine starts.

Biggest OVER run: Athletics (4-1 last five)

Oakland finished off its Bay Bridge Series by getting thumped, 11-2 by San Francisco to cash three OVERS in the four-game set. The Giants lit up A’s pitching for double-digit runs twice in the final three games, while Oakland scored six and eight runs in its two victories over their Bay Area rival. The A’s head down to Anaheim for a weekend series with the Angels as right-hander Jharel Cotton tries to put his recent struggles behind him. Cotton has allowed nine earned runs in two July starts, but Oakland has finished UNDER the total in three of his previous four road assignments.

Biggest UNDER run: Padres (5-0 last five)

San Diego travels east to face Pittsburgh for the second straight weekend after the Padres captured two of three from the Pirates at Petco Park to wrap up July. All three games in that series stayed UNDER the total as the Pirates were limited to two runs apiece in their two defeats. Since scoring 13 runs combined in the final two victories over the Mets on July 26 and 27, the Padres have pushed across only 13 runs in the past five contests. Travis Wood makes his second start for San Diego since getting dealt from Kansas City as the southpaw limited Pittsburgh to two runs and two hits in six innings of a 3-2 triumph last Friday.

Matchup to watch: Mariners vs. Royals

Kansas City rebounded after getting swept at Baltimore by rallying past Seattle on Thursday, 6-4. The Royals remained 2 ½ games behind the Indians in the AL Central as Kansas City knocked off Seattle for the fourth time in four tries this season. The Mariners dropped their second straight game following a four-game winning streak as Seattle fell 2 ½ games back of Kansas City for the second Wild Card spot in the American League.

The M’s are flipped to a road favorite on Friday as James Paxton heads to the mound. The southpaw won all six of his July starts, while not allowing a single run in his previous two outings against the Red Sox and Mets. Paxton didn’t face the Royals when Kansas City swept Seattle at Safeco Field in early July, while tossing eight innings in a 4-3 loss at Kauffman Stadium last season after the M’s squandered a 3-0 lead.

Jason Hammel counters for the Royals, as Kansas City shoots for its sixth consecutive home victory. The Royals are unbeaten in Hammel’s last three appearances, including a pair of underdog wins at Detroit and Boston. Hammel hasn’t had much luck pitching at home this season as Kansas City owns a 4-9 record, while the righty has turned into an UNDER machine of late by hitting five straight UNDERS.

Betcha didn’t know: The Twins have performed better on the road than at home this season, as Minnesota dropped the opener of its series to Texas on Thursday. However, Minnesota owns a 4-1 record at Target Field in its last five opportunities following a home loss since mid-June, while Texas is riding a four-game road winning streak.

Biggest public favorite: Red Sox (-210) vs. White Sox

Biggest public underdog: Athletics (+115) at Angels

Biggest line move: Yankees (+140 to +120) at Indians

                          • Yu Darvish makes Dodgers debut
                            August 4, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                              • Weekend Outlook
                                August 4, 2017

Washington (63-43) at Chicago Cubs (57-50)
Scheduled Rotation: Roark (8-7) vs. Hendricks (4-3), TBA vs. Lackey (8-9), Jackson (2-1) vs. Lester (8-6)
Series Price: Cubs -200, Nationals +170

Be sure to check the wind speed and direction before betting each of these games in regards to the total. It's going to be swirling around fast in "The Windy City" through Monday. If its blowing out, bet 'over' the number. If it's blowing in, then bet the 'under.' Washington's NL-best offense averaging a 5.5 to 4.5 score this season might seem like a tough team to bet 'under' with, but they're just 51-50-5 to the 'over.' The Cubs have won 14 of their past 19 games while the Nationals have won nine of their last 13 road games.

They split four games at D.C. in late June. The last time these two teams met at Wrigley Field was May of 2016 with the Cubs taking a four-game sweep. The Cubs have won nine of the past 13 meetings. A fun game to play within the game is guessing how many walks Bryce Harper will get. In that four-game series at Wrigley last season Harper was walked 13 times, including six in the series finale.

San Diego (48-59) at Pittsburgh (52-56)
Scheduled Rotation: Wood (2-3) vs. Nova (10-8), Lamet (5-4) vs. Cole (9-7), Richard (5-12) vs. Taillon (6-5)
Series Price: Pirates -280, Padres +230

The Pirates have lost six of their last eight and have stayed 'under' in six of their last seven. They're inching up on Cleveland as baseball's best 'under' team (60-41-5) cashing at 59.4 percent. Pittsburgh is 59-42-7 to the 'under' cashing at 58.4 percent. They met last weekend for three at Petco Park with the Padres getting wins on Saturday and Sunday. All three games stayed 'under' making it 5-0 to the low side in their last five meetings. Pittsburgh is 20-5-1 to the 'under' in its last 26 games at PNC Park. The Padres have won five of their last seven and their last five have stayed 'under' the closing total. Seems like a theme here this weekend with the total.

LA Dodgers (76-32) at NY Mets (49-57)
Scheduled Rotation: Darvish (6-9) vs. deGrom (12-4), Hill (8-4) vs. Lugo (5-3), Ryu (3-6) vs. Matz (2-4)
Series Price: Dodgers -150, Mets +130

The Dodgers have been masters of the one-run games going 19-10. For you run-line bettors, consider that in 29 of the Dodgers 108 games, you have no chance of winning. Run-line bettors are still up +15.30 units, but betting just to win every game you'd be up +27.5 units (MLB-best). These guys have won 15 of 18 since the All-Star break. They're currently on a 43-10 run, which includes a four-game sweep against the Mets on June 19 at Dodger Stadium. All four of those games went 'over' which isn't surprising since the Mets are the best 'over' team on the majors by far. The Mets have gone 62-34-10 to the 'over' cashing at 64.6 percent. The next best 'over' team is the Astros (58-43-7) at 64.6 percent. The Dodgers have gone 13-6 in their last 19 games at Citi Field. The Mets are -14 units this season.

                                Miami (51-55) at Atlanta (49-58)
Scheduled Rotation: Conley (4-3) vs. Dickey (6-7), Straily (7-7) vs. Foltynewicz (9-6), Urena (9-5) vs. Sims (0-1)
Series Price: Braves -110, Marlins -110

The Braves have spent the most days in second-place of the National League Central, but the Marlins have just zipped past them to take that spot and the Braves have fallen to fourth just a half-game behind the Mets. Atlanta has lost seven of its last eight games while Miami has won six of its last eight. Miami has also won seven of its last nine road games. The Braves have won five of eight meetings, but it appears the table has turned since they last met in June. The Marlins are playing good ball and should win this series.

Arizona (62-46) at San Francisco (42-68)
Scheduled Rotation: Banda (0-1) vs. Bumgarner (1-4), Walker (6-5) vs. Stratton (0-2), Corbin (8-10) vs. Samardzija (6-11)
Series Price: Giants -135, Diamondbacks +115

These teams haven't met since April at a time we didn't know how good the Diamondbacks would be or how bad the Giants would become. Arizona took three of four at Chase Field to open the season. A week later the Giants took two of three at AT&T. The Giants have been in the National League West cellar since mid-June. Arizona has the third-best record in the NL and are currently on a 6-3 run which culminated Thursday with a second straight win at Wrigley Field. The Giants have won 16 of the past 22 meetings. Arizona is almost unbeatable at home (36-18) but are just 26-28 on the road. However, this series price with SF -135 is about 25 cents too high.

                                Toronto (51-57) at Houston (69-39)
Scheduled Rotation: Valdez (1-0) vs. Peacock (9-1), Estrada (4-7) vs. Morton (9-4), Stroman (10-5) vs. Fiers (7-6)
Series Price: Astros -180, Blue Jays +160

These two met last month in Toronto and split a four-game series with Houston winning by a combined score of 31-3 in their two wins and Toronto winning 14-6 in its two wins. All four of those games went 'over' the total. The Astros +22.7 units is the second-best profit in baseball, but most of that has come on the road where they are 38-15. At home, Houston 31-24 which equates to a minus-4.8 units; they're usually big favorites at home, so a loss stands out more than a win. They average 7.1 runs on the road and bat .303. At home, they average 'just' 4.8 runs and bat .280. It's equated to more 'under' tickets.

Houston just got slapped around at home by Tampa Bay, who took three of the final four games. The Astros have now lost five of their past six and have lost two straight series. The Blue Jays have won seven of their last 10 and have won 10 of their last 14 against the Astros.

Milwaukee (57-53) at Tampa Bay (57-53)
Scheduled Rotation: Woodruff (0-0) vs. Faria (5-1), Davies (12-5) vs. Cobb (9-7), Nelson (9-5) vs. Archer (8-6)
Series Price: Rays -160, Brewers +140

The Brewers (+12.4 units) just took two of three at home against the Cardinals, but they've still lost five of their last eight. The Rays (+3.4) just took took the final three of four at mighty Houston; it was quite impressive. Tampa Bay is now just 3.5 games behind in the American League East behind the Red Sox and Yankees and they're only a half-game behind the Royals in the AL Wild Card chase. Who would've thought the Rays at the beginning of the season? Milwaukee is batting only .204 in its last 10 games. These teams last met in 2014 (TB 2-1) and Tampa Bay has won six of its last eight Interleague home games. Look for the Rays to keep their roll going and win the series.
