  • MLB notebook: Raines relishes spot in Hall of Fame lineup
    July 29, 2017

Nobody knows what Tim Raines will be feeling on Sunday afternoon more than his best friend in baseball, Andre Dawson. And Dawson knows there's nothing he can say to Raines to properly prepare him for the task of delivering a Hall of Fame acceptance speech that will serve as the culmination of his career in baseball.

"With Tim, I'm sure it's going to be a lot of humor and some fun to it," Dawson said after an autograph signing Friday. "I just hope he's not too impacted by what he sees when he steps out at that podium."

Raines and the rest of the Hall of Fame Class of 2017 -- fellow former players Jeff Bagwell and Ivan Rodriguez as well as former commissioner Bud Selig and former Kansas City Royals and Atlanta Braves general manager John Schuerholz -- will all be uncertain of what to expect in a familiar environment Sunday when they will be inducted in front of a crowd of more than 30,000 expected at Clark Sports Center.

Raines, who will be the third Hall of Famer to represent the Montreal Expos, attended the inductions of his predecessors -- Dawson in 2010 and the late Gary Carter in 2003. He knows watching Dawson and Carter speak will be nothing like actually stepping to the microphone himself.

"I kind of got a chance to get a feel for that, what it's like being up there," Raines said during a press availability Saturday afternoon. "It's definitely a different kind of feeling when you're on the other side. I'm certainly looking forward to that."

--The Toronto Blue Jays placed shortstop Troy Tulowitzki on the 10-day disabled list with a sprained right ankle and called up infielder Rob Refsnyder from Triple-A Buffalo.

The Blue Jays also sent right-handed pitcher Chris Smith to Buffalo on option and activated right-hander Mike Bolsinger from the 10-day disabled list, where he had been with left knee inflammation.

Tulowitzki fell after stepping on first base as he tried to beat out a grounder during the third inning of the 7-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night. He was helped off the field by two trainers.

Refsnyder was acquired last Sunday from the New York Yankees in exchange for first baseman Ryan McBroom, who was with Double-A New Hampshire.

--The Los Angeles Angels designated infielder Nick Franklin for assignment and called up right-handed pitcher Troy Scribner from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Franklin was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers on June 30 for a player to be named or cash considerations. He was 3-for-24, batting .125/.300/.167 with two RBIs in 13 games for the Angels.

Scribner was 10-3 with a 4.16 ERA in 18 games (17 starts) at Salt Lake. He was called up to bolster the bullpen with reliever Yusmeiro Petit starting the game in Toronto on Saturday.

    • LEADING OFF: Hall of a day for Bagwell, Pudge, Raines
      July 29, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Sunday:

      FOREVER FAMOUS

There may be no crying in baseball, but likely there will be a tear or two shed during the speeches on induction day at the Hall of Fame. Star players Jeff Bagwell, Tim Raines and Ivan Rodriguez, former Commissioner Bud Selig and longtime executive John Schuerholz take their places in the shrine at Cooperstown, New York. The forecast calls for sunny skies for the thousands of fans who will gather on a giant field to watch the ceremonies.

      COUNTDOWN TO 3,000

Adrian Beltre needs one more hit for the 3,000th of his career. The Rangers third baseman is on deck to become the 31st major leaguer to reach the milestone. He got No. 2,999 on Saturday night in Texas, and will try to hit the mark at home against Baltimore lefty Wade Miley.

      BIG TEN

The Cleveland Indians go for their 10th straight win when Josh Tomlin (7-9, 5.59 ERA) starts for the AL Central leaders in Chicago vs. White Sox lefty Carlos Rodon (1-4, 6.29).

      HOLD THAT TIGER?

Detroit ace Justin Verlander (5-7, 4.50 ERA) makes his final start before Monday's trade deadline - he's been mentioned in swap speculation. The 34-year-old righty has spent his entire career with the Tigers, and is sure to get a big cheer at Comerica Park when he faces Houston. Verlander is 4-0 with a 2.83 ERA in eight starts against the Astros.

      SOLID DUDA

Lucas Duda has homered in his first two games since being traded from the New York Mets to Tampa Bay. The longballs haven't been enough to hold off the Yankees, who try to complete a four-game sweep of the visiting Rays. Brett Gardner already has two walkoff hits in the series for the AL East leaders, who have won six in a row overall.

      CHECK HIM

The Mariners will see how outfielder Mitch Haniger is doing, a day after being hit in the face by a 95 mph fastball from Mets ace Jacob deGrom. Blood was dripping from Haniger's mouth as he walked off the field. Seattle manager Scott Servais said Haniger probably is going on the disabled list.

''Obviously when something like that happens, it's scary,'' Servais said. He's got no fractures, his teeth are OK, and he's got a pretty severe laceration on his upper lip. He's getting some work done on that now. It could have been a lot worse.''

      • Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Odds on some long shots to win the college football national title:

        Auburn 30-1

        Texas, Oklahoma State 40-1

        Florida, Miami 50-1

        Tennessee, Kansas State 80-1

        Nebraska, Boise State 100-1

        Iowa, Arkansas 300-1

        **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Stuff for a summer Sunday……..

        13) Las Vegas sports books are usually pretty quiet, just the announcers on games/races drowning out conversations. When a big run or touchdown is scored, there is some yelling, but it is usually subdued and business-like (and a lot of fun).

Last night I sat down for the 7pm ET baseball games; the Houston-Detroit game was in the bottom of the 2nd. Immediately I could hear the guy behind me moaning at every out made. I figured he had the Tigers, who trailed 3-0.

But then the Astros came to bat and he kept it up:
        — “You bleeping idiot”
        — “You goddamn bleep-bleeper”
        — “How can you take that pitch?”— This one made me laugh; it was the first pitch of an inning and the guy exploded because the batter took it.

In the 4th inning he got a phone call: “I have to sweat out 8 more runs. These bleeps are terrible.” Just then, someone hit into a double play; he was not happy.

Obviously, this guy had bet the over, which was 10.5. Detroit won 5-3, and the guy was gone, off to make someone else’s night a little more pleasant.

        12) A’s 5, Twins 4— Rajai Davis ht a walk-off homer as Oakland ended a 5-game skid and gave manager Bob Melvin his 1,000th win as a major league skipper.

Melvin is a very good manager; too bad he works for an ownership that doesn’t give a rat’s ass about winning, just about making $$$$.

        11) Class A Salem Red Sox are 61-44 this year, good news for manager Joe Oliver, since two of his players are the sons of big league managers Mike Matheny/Torey Lovullo. Can move up the ranks a lot quicker if you impress people at the major league level.

        10) Edwin Nunez is 5-9 in his first two games for Boston; looks like the Red Sox found their missing infielder.

        9) Red Sox have had 53 runners thrown out running the bases this season; no one else has made more than 46 outs on the basepaths.

        8) Speaking of Boston, Eduardo Rodriguez threw 107 pitches last night, but only finished four innings. Part of why guys like Kershaw/Scherzer make a freakin’ fortune is that they eat up innings and take a lot of stress off the bullpen, which over a 162-game in 182-day season, is very important.

        7) Zack Cozart/Matt Kemp/Troy Tulowitzki go on the DL; Robbie Ray goes on the concussion DL after he got beaned with a line drive Friday night.

        6) Dave Stewart threw a no-hitter in Toronto in 1990; until this week, he had never seen a replay of the game, just clips of Dave Henderson catching the last out in CF. Monte Moore, who was the Kansas City A’s radio guy in the 60’s/70’s, had a CD of the 1990 broadcast and sent it to the A’s TV people, who showed it to Stewart this week.

        5) Dodgers have won the last 51 games in which they led; that is a major league record and the old record was only 32 games.

        4) Dodgers are 18-0 this season when Cody Bellinger drives in 2+ runs. It is weird that Bellinger didn’t come to the majors until April 25; they obviously had very little idea how good he is.

        3) When umpire Tom Hallion calls a third strike on a hitter, he prances like Leslie Nelson in The Naked Gun movies, pretty much showing up the hitter. Do hitters get mad at this? Why doesn’t he get all excited when a pitcher walks a guy?

        2) Congrats to the late Bill King’s family, after Mr King was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame this weekend. Mr King broadcast the A’s/Raiders/Warriors; he is on NFL Films a lot in the old Raiders’ highlights. He was also in Moneyball, when Scott Hatteberg hits a walk-off for the A’s 20th straight win: “How do you explain it? Crazy!!! Just plain crazy!!!”

        Congrats, sir.

        1) I’m not fond of trade rumors; I know these writers get paid to provide information, but it gets old: “…..Sonny Gray will get traded to (fill in blank)”

Or “Justin Verlander will only get traded to the Cubs” or “Dodgers really want Yu Darvish”

Hey, I’d like to date Gina Gershon, but it ain’t happening. You can’t always get what you want. Just give me the facts, people.

                • Sunday's Diamond Notes
                  July 30, 2017

Hottest team: Indians (9-0 past nine overall)

The Indians have won nine straight games to seize a three-game lead in the American League Central over the Kansas City Royals. They've also ascended to the second-best record in the American League, going 12 games over .500, including 29-21 in 50 games away from home. Their plus-103 run differential is also third-best in the AL, and sixth-best in the majors. They'll face LHP Carlos Rodon in Sunday's road series finale. Cleveland is 10-3 in their past 13 gameso n Sunday, and 9-3 over their past 12 vs. LHP, including 6-2 in their past eight on the road against southpaws. They turn to Josh Tomlin to cap off the sweep. While the Indians are 20-8 over his past 28 against teams with a losing record, they're just 1-4 over his past five road outings and 0-4 in his past four inside the division.

Coldest team: White Sox (1-14 past 15 overall)

The White Sox sold off key parts of their team in recent weeks, and they resemble more of a high-end Triple-A team with some major league parts rather than a club ready to make any noise. They have dropped 36 of their past 51 games overall, including seven in a row at home against teams with a winning road record. They're also 0-4 in their past four vs. RHP and 3-13 over their past 16 games inside the division. The White Sox turn to Carlos Rodon, who is 1-4 with a 6.29 ERA overall, but 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA against the Indians over his career. On the flip side, Cleveland's starter Josh Tomlin has served up 10 runs in just 4 1/3 innings across two starts against the ChiSox this season.

Hottest pitcher: Lance Lynn, Cardinals (8-6, 3.21 ERA)

Lynn has been pitching well despite the fact he is just two games over .500 after 21 starts. He still ranks 11th in the majors in ERA at 3.21, and opponents are hitting just .210 against him over 120 2/3 innings with 107 strikeouts and a strong 1.10 WHIP. Lynn takes the ball at home against the Diamondbacks looking to work on his already impressive ERA at Busch Stadium II. The right-hander is 4-3 with a 2.53 ERA over nine home starts with a 42:16 K/9 ratio and stellar .199 opponent batting average, serving up just six homers over 53 1/3 innings. He has caught fire in July, going 2-1 with a 1.17 ERA over five starts, allowing just four runs and five walks with 21 strikeouts over 30 2/3 innings.

Coldest pitcher: Clayton Richard, Padres (5-11, 5.37 ERA)

Richard takes the mound against a Pirates team certain to be angry after dropping each of their past four games, including the first two in this series. In fact, after ascending to within two games of first place in the National League Central, the Pirates have dropped six of their past seven. Still, nothing comes easy for Richard. He is tied for the major league lead with 76 earned runs allowed over 127 1/3 innings while opponents are hitting a robust .329 against him over 21 starts while he has posted a dismal 1.61 WHIP. San Diego is just 1-6 over Richard's past seven outings, and 0-4 in his past four at home.

Biggest UNDER run: Pirates (20-6-1 past 27 overall)

The 'under' has been a great play in games involving the Bucs, going 20-6-1 over the past 27 games overall and 14-2 over their past 16 games following a loss. Gerrit Cole has been ace-like lately, too, with the 'under' going 14-5 over his past 19 outings. That includes an impressive 8-3 'under' mark over Cole's past 11 road outings, although the 'over' has hit in six of Pittsburgh's past seven on the road against left-handed starting pitching. The over is also 7-1-1 in San Diego's past nine home games, and 9-1 in their past 10 vs. RHP. As mentioned, Richard has been terrible, too, and the over is 5-0-1 across his past six home starts and 5-1 over his past six overall.

Biggest OVER run: Mets (5-1 past six road games)

The Mets are the only team in the majors with 60 or more 'over' results this season, going 60-31-11 through 102 games. The overh as connected in five of their past six road games, five of the past six against teams with a losing overall record and four in a row on the road in interleague games against a left-handed starter. The over has also been a frequent occurrence with Seth Lugo on the bump, going 5-1-1 over his past seven, including 3-0-1 in his past four road assignments. The over hasn't been coming through in starts by James Paxton lately, as the 'under' is 4-1 over his past five starts. However, the over is 4-1 in his past five interleague matchups and the over is 7-3-1 in Seattle's past 11 interleague home games against a right-handed starter.

Matchup to watch: Dodgers vs. Giants

These archrivals are going in completely opposite directions this season, as the Giants are 21 games under .500 while the Dodgers are 25 games over the break-even mark. As such, San Francisco finds themselves a whopping 33 1/2 games back in the National League West. Don't look for the Giants to lay down, however, as they've fought hard in the first two games of the series. Ty Blach pitched well in a 2-1 loss against Rich Hill in the second battle of southpaws in as many nights. The Giants have won just six of their past 19 games overall, though, and they're 1-7 across their past eight divisional games. Madison Bumgarner won for the first time in 2017 last time out, but the Giants are 1-6 over his past seven outings and 0-4 in his past four on the road. The Dodgers have buried southpaws, as L.A. is 22-4 over their past 26 games vs. LHP while going 11-1 in their past 12 inside the division.

                  Betcha didn’t know:
The Dodgers turn to Hyun-Jin Ryu to keep the ball rolling against MadBum and the Giants. He hasn't been able to make it through six innings in five consecutive outings, although he has yielded just two runs in each of the past four while the Dodgers are 3-1 across his past four assignments. He is 4-5 with a 3.79 ERA across 10 career starts vs. the Giants, but many of those meetings were against much, much better San Francisco offenses. Bumgarner should bring his best as the Giants look to avoid the broom. He is 14-9 with a 2.70 ERA over his career against the rivals, as the team elected to move up his scheduled start from Monday to Sunday to give the Dodgers a run for their money.

Biggest public favorite: Dodgers (-270) vs. Giants

Biggest public underdog: Braves (+120) at Phillies

Biggest line move: Blue Jays (-125 to -145) vs. Angels

                        July 30, 2017

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Adrian Beltre doubled for his 3,000th career hit Sunday, reaching the milestone in the Texas Rangers' 10-6 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

The Rangers already were down 4-0 when the 38-year-old third baseman, who went 1 for 5 in his 2,771st game, had a hard hit down the line past third base in the fourth inning.

Beltre became the first player from the Dominican Republic, and 31st overall, to join the 3,000-hit club in the major leagues.

Jonathan Schoop and Welington Castillo homered in a five-run fifth for a 9-2 Orioles lead. Castillo also had the last of three consecutive RBI singles off lefty Martin Perez (5-9) in the fourth.

Wade Miley (5-9) went five innings and one of the four hits he allowed being to Beltre, who grounded a 3-0 pitch that went past the bag and then ricocheted off the side wall into left field.

                        CUBS 4, BREWERS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Victor Caratini hit his first career home run, a solo shot that broke a tie in the seventh and backed John Lackey's solid six-inning start to help Chicago beat Milwaukee.

Caratini homered to straightaway center off a 1-2 fastball from Zach Davies (12-5) with one out in the seventh for a 3-2 lead, delighting the bevy of Cubs fans who made the trek north from Chicago. The Cubs took two of three games in an important series at Miller Park.

With the non-waiver trade deadline looming Monday, the Cubs increased their lead in the National League Central over the second-place Brewers to 2 1/2 games.

Lackey (8-9) struck out seven and allowed five hits over six innings, including Domingo Santana's game-tying, two-run homer in the sixth that just landed beyond outfielder Jason Heyward's outstretched glove in the right-field corner.

                        TIGERS 13, ASTROS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Justin Verlander pitched six scoreless innings in what could be his last start with Detroit.

Justin Upton matched a career best with six RBIs for the Tigers, who handed the Astros their first back-to-back losses since June 12-13.

Upton had four hits, including a seventh-inning grand slam, and scored twice.

In his last start before Monday's trade deadline, Verlander (6-7) gave up five singles and three walks while striking out six.

The subject of trade rumors since last winter, Verlander received a long standing ovation from the crowd of 31,970 when he walked off the mound after the sixth inning.

Lance McCullers Jr. (7-3), whose dad pitched for the Tigers in 1990, allowed five runs on eight hits in five-plus innings.

                        MARINERS 9, METS 1

SEATTLE (AP) - James Paxton tossed six scoreless innings, becoming the first Mariners pitcher to win six games in a single month, and Nelson Cruz had a three-run homer to pace Seattle.

Cruz provided Paxton with an early cushion with a three-run shot in the first inning and Leonys Martin, recalled earlier in the day from Triple-A, homered in his first at-bat and saved a possible run with a diving catch in right field.

Paxton (11-3) had runners aboard in each of his six innings. The lefthander scattered six hits, striking out eight and walking none, with two hit batters in a 108-pitch outing. Paxton, sidelined most of May with a left forearm strain, was 6-0 in six July starts, allowing six earned runs in 39 1/3 innings with no home runs.

Seth Lugo (5-3) allowed five runs on eight hits in five innings, striking out five and walking none.

                        PIRATES 7, PADRES 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Andrew McCutchen hit three home runs for the third time in his career to lift Pittsburgh over San Diego.

McCutchen's big day backed Gerrit Cole (9-7), who pitched seven innings of five-hit ball for the Pirates.

It was just the second win in eight games for the Pirates, who ended the Padres' four-game winning streak.

McCutchen has 22 homers. He connected with two outs in the first off left-hander Clayton Richard (5-12), with the ball clearing the fence just out of the reach of center fielder Manuel Margot. He went deep again in the eighth off rookie Jose Torres and then homered off the right-field foul pole with two outs in the ninth.

It was McCutchen's third multi-homer game of the season and 15th of his career. He also made a nice diving catch in center field to end the eighth.

                        RAYS 5, YANKEES 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Corey Dickerson hit a go-ahead, two-run single in a three-run third, and Tampa Bay'S bullpen allowed one hit over five scoreless innings to salvage the finale of a four-game series.

Sergio Romo, Dan Jennings, Steve Cishek and Tommy Hunter pitched hitless relief after rookie Jacob Faria started just four of 20 batters with strikes and got only 12 outs on his 24th birthday.

Cishek (2-1) pitched 1 2/3 innings, and Colome got three outs for his 30th save in 35 chances. Brett Gardner singled with one out in the ninth, advanced on a wild pitch and Clint Frazier walked. Colome then retired Aaron Judge on a flyout and Matt Holliday on a groundout.

Tampa Bay, which had been 0-6 at Yankee Stadium this year, won despite striking out 16 times. The Rays had lost eight of their previous 10 games.

Ronald Torreyes homered and drove in a career-high three RBIs for the Yankees, who had won six straight and eight of nine.

                        ROYALS 5, RED SOX 3

BOSTON (AP) - Alex Gordon's two-run triple capped a four-run eighth inning, and Kansas City rallied to beat Boston a day after its season-high, nine-game winning streak was snapped.

Alcides Escobar added a two-run single in the eighth and drove in three runs for the Royals, who lost in extra innings on Saturday after taking the series opener.

Rookie Rafael Devers hit a solo homer for Boston and starter Drew Pomeranz gave up one run on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings in his 100th career start.

Jason Hammel (5-8) allowed three runs on seven hits to end a six-start winless streak. His last victory also came against the Red Sox, at home on June 19.

Kelvin Herrera got the final three outs for his 23rd save, getting Mookie Betts to fly out with the bases loaded.

                        BLUE JAYS 11, ANGELS 10

TORONTO (AP) - Steve Pearce hit his second game-ending grand slam in just four days Toronto pulled off the biggest ninth-inning comeback in team history, rallying for seven runs to beat Los Angeles.

Pearce connected with one out off Bud Norris (1-4). On Thursday, Pearce's slam with two outs in the 10th inning lifted Toronto over Oakland 8-4.

Matt Dermody (1-0) worked three innings for the win.

Albert Pujols hit two home runs for the Angels, who were bidding for their first sweep since May.

                        WHITE SOX 3, INDIANS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Matt Davidson hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning, and Chicago ended Cleveland's nine-game winning streak.

Chicago had lost 14 of 15 coming into the game, including seven straight at home, and traded fan favorite Melky Cabrera to Kansas City shortly before the first pitch as part of a roster overhaul.

Jose Abreu got the ninth-inning rally started with a double off Bryan Shaw (4-5) to set up Davidon's heroics, the 21st home run of his rookie season.

Tyler Clippard (2-6) pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the win, the first for the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field since July 2. That game featured strong pitching from Jose Quintana and David Robertson, both of whom have since been traded.

                        CARDINALS 3, DIAMONDBACKS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Lance Lynn threw six strong innings and Jose Martinez homered and drove in three runs as St. Louis beat Arizona for its fifth win in seven games.

Lynn (9-6), the subject of trade rumors the past few days, gave up two runs and four hits. He has allowed no more than two earned runs in each of his last six starts.

Lynn retired the last eight batters he faced in improving to 5-0 lifetime against Arizona. Trevor Rosenthal struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his sixth save in eight opportunities.

Martinez hit a two-run drive in the fourth to tie it, then had a sacrifice fly in the sixth that scored Jedd Gyorko with the go-ahead run.

Taijuan Walker (6-5) allowed three runs on four hits over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out 10.

                        REDS 6, MARLINS 4

MIAMI (AP) - Rookie Luis Castillo pitched a career-best eight innings, Tucker Barnhart drove in three runs and Cincinnati ended a six-game skid.

Castillo (2-4) allowed one run on three hits, striking out six and walking one. He outpitched Dan Straily (7-7) - the right-handers were traded for each last January as part of a four-player deal.

The Marlins, who got a three-run homer from Marcell Ozuna in the ninth off reliever Raisel Iglesias, had their four-game winning streak snapped. NL home run leader Giancarlo Stanton was held out of Miami's lineup for the first time since May 31.

                        PHILLIES 2, BRAVES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Freddy Galvis hit a bases-loaded single to right field in the ninth inning to give Philadelphia its second straight walk-off win.

Andrew Knapp led off the ninth with a double to left off Rex Brothers (1-2). Manager Brian Snitker lifted Brothers for Akeel Morris.

Morris walked pinch-hitter Ty Kelly to put runners on first and second. Cesar Hernandez was trying to advance the runners with a sacrifice, but his bunt stayed just inside the third-base line and Freddie Freeman's throw was not in time, loading the bases with no outs.

Galvis pulled Morris' second pitch into right to score Knapp and lift the Phillies to their fourth straight victory and eighth in the last 11.

Kelly's RBI single in the 11th on Saturday night gave Philadelphia a 4-3 win.

Hector Neris (4-4) pitched a scoreless ninth.

                        NATIONALS 3, ROCKIES 1, 2ND GAME

WASHINGTON (AP) - Adam Lind and Brian Goodwin homered in the fifth inning, and Washington beat Colorado to split a day-night doubleheader.

In the first game, Charlie Blackmon had four hits and scored four runs, and the Rockies roughed up Erick Fedde in his major league debut.

The Rockies had a 1-0 lead in the second game before Lind's two-run homer off Jon Gray (3-2). One out later, Goodwin followed with his homer for a two-run lead.

Edwin Jackson (2-1) allowed four hits in seven innings, striking out six. Sean Doolittle got his third save.

In the opener, Kyle Freeland (11-7) went five innings, allowing nine hits and four runs while striking out four.

                        ATHLETICS 6, TWINS 5, 12 INNINGS

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Yonder Alonso homered in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift the Oakland over Minnesota.

Alonzo's 22nd homer of the season came on the first pitch he saw from Tyler Duffey (0-3) and was his second game-ending home run of his career.

Oakland, which won its second straight after a six-game skid, came in tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the major league lead with eight game-ending hits.

Josh Smith (1-0) pitched two innings to pick up the win.

The Twins lost for the sixth time in seven games and fell to 1-5 on a disastrous West Coast road trip in which they've blown leads in every game.

                          ****************************

                          Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

                          13) The Jaime Garcia Era in Minnesota was short and sweet; in fact, Garcia never stepped foot in Minnesota during the six-day long era— he won a game in Oakland Friday night, but was traded to the Bronx Sunday, less than a week after the Twins acquired him from Atlanta.

                          — Colorado acquired catcher Jonathan Lucroy from the Rangers.

                          12) They played the Cubs-Brewers volume at the Westgate Sportsbook Sunday; good choice. Ernie Johnson doing a ballgame with Ron Darling is about as good as televised baseball gets.

Every game is on in the sportsbook, but only one has the volume turned up. Before the game in Milwaukee, they had the YES Network on with Michael Kay/Paul O’Neill— no thanks.

                          11) White Sox 3, Indians 1— Josh Tomlin didn’t allow a hit in the first four innings, but then his hamstring tightened up and he left the game. Matt Davidson had the walk-off hit for Chicago.

                          10) Cardinals 3, Arizona 2— Diamondbacks’ TV guy Bob Brenly doesn’t think DJ Reyburn is a good umpire; he said on the air Sunday, “This won’t be fixed until he retires,” meaning Arizona’s thinking that Reyburn is a terrible umpire who also may not like the Diamondback team.

                          9) Guy wearing a Dodger hat sitting by the first base dugout in San Diego Sunday had a t-shirt with “Arrogant Bastard” in big letters on the front. Alrighty then.

                          8) Still seems weird that the Dodgers haven’t been in a World Series since 1988. I do not want to talk about the ’88 World Series, but thats the last time LA has been in one.

                          7) If the Astros started the playoffs tomorrow, who would their #1 starter be?

Lance McCullers is 0-2, 10.61 in his last four starts; Dallas Keuchel threw 79 pitches in only three innings of work in his first start back from the DL. Very surprised they haven’t added a starting pitcher at the trade deadline.

                          6) Congrats to Adrian Beltre on his 3,000th hit, a double against the Orioles; Saturday, some goofball on TV listed his top 4 third basemen of all time and left Brooks Robinson off.

Um, no. Schmidt-Brett-Robinson would be my top three, then you can have a healthy debate on who #4 would be, with Beltre included.

                          5) Blue Jays 11, Angels 10— There is no clock in baseball; Angels led 10-4 after 8.5 innings, but then the Halos couldn’t even get an out in the bottom of the 9th, as Toronto scored seven runs. Steve Pearce hit his second walk-off grand slam in four days for Toronto.

                          4) Lucas Duda is 3-7 with two homers, four walks in his first three games for Tampa Bay.

                          3) LA Clippers’ forward Danilo Gallinari broke his thumb in a fight while playing in some international basketball game Sunday. He punched a guy and broke his own thumb— no bueno.

                          2) Very happy to see that Tim Raines got into the Hall of Fame Sunday; he was an underrated player because in his prime, and he was really great in his prime, he played for the Montreal Expos, an obscure team. When the ’94 Expos had a legit chance to win the World Series, the Series was cancelled by a work stoppage.

                          1) I’m thinking the Cubs benefitted from having only one guy in the All-Star Game; their position players could rest for four days, and they’ve gone 13-3 since the All-Star break.

I’m thinking back to 2014, when the A’s had seven guys in the All-Star Game and then they limped to the finish line, with a tired nucleus of older players.

                          • MLB notebook: Beltre doubles for 3,000th hit
                            July 30, 2017

Texas Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre became the 31st player in major league history to record 3,000 hits Sunday when he ripped a bouncing double on a 3-0 pitch down the third base line in the bottom of the fourth inning against the Baltimore Orioles.

Beltre became the first player in a Rangers uniform to reach 3,000 hits, and the first player to reach the milestone in Arlington, Texas. He also became the first Dominican-born player to reach 3,000 hits in his career.

The double was Beltre's 605th, tying Milwaukee Brewers great Paul Molitor and the Pittsburgh Pirates' Paul Waner for 13th on the all-time list.

--The New York Yankees acquired left-hander Jaime Garcia from the Minnesota Twins, and the starting pitcher will be changing teams for the second time in less than a week.

Garcia, a free agent after the season, joined the Twins on Monday after the Atlanta Braves dealt him, catcher Anthony Recker and cash considerations for a minor league pitching prospect.

In the latest trade, the Twins will get two pitching prospects from the Yankees: left-hander Dietrich Enns and right-hander Zack Littell.

Garcia, 31, is 5-7 with a 4.29 ERA over 119 2/3 innings in 19 starts this season with the Braves and Twins.

--The Kansas City Royals acquired outfielder Melky Cabrera and cash considerations from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for minor league pitchers Andre Davis and A.J. Puckett.

Cabrera, who is in the final season of a three-year contract with the White Sox, rejoins the Royals after spending 2011 with the club.

Cabrera, 32, has spent the past two-plus seasons with the White Sox and is hitting .288 with 13 home runs and 56 RBIs in 98 games this year.

--Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Chris Owings broke the middle finger on his right hand while fouling off a pitch.

Owings tried to avoid a 92 mph fastball from St. Louis' Lance Lynn, but plate umpire D.J. Reyburn said the ball hit the bat. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo argued briefly that Owings was hit by the pitch, but the call stood after a brief conference of the umpires.

It is unclear how long Owings will be sidelined, but he is expected to be out several weeks.

--Los Angeles Angels right fielder Kole Calhoun left the game against the Toronto Blue Jays with a sore right hamstring.

Calhoun will have an MRI exam Monday. He was replaced by pinch runner Shane Robinson in the third inning.

The 29-year-old Calhoun is hitting .231/.312/.368 with 13 home runs and 45 RBIs this season.

--Lee May, who hit 354 career home runs playing for four major league teams, died Saturday. He was 74.

No cause of death has been announced.

May played parts of 18 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, Cincinnati Reds, Houston Astros and Kansas City Royals. He was a three-time All-Star (1969, 1971, 1972) and led the American League in RBIs with 109 as a member of the Orioles in 1976.

                            • LEADING OFF: Will Gray, Darvish go or stay on deadline day?
                              July 30, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Monday:

                              DEAL `EM UP

Sonny Gray, Yu Darvish and Justin Verlander have been mentioned as possible trade targets as the 4 p.m. EDT deadline nears for making deals without waivers. So, too, has dominant Baltimore closer Zach Britton.

In the past few weeks, J.D. Martinez, Todd Frazier, Melky Cabrera and others have been dealt - lefty Jaime Garcia has been traded twice, from Atlanta to Minnesota to the Yankees.

Arizona already got Martinez, and might be tempted to make another move after infielder Chris Owings broke his finger trying to bunt Sunday.

                              JUDGE'S SLUMP

Talk of Yankees rookie Aaron Judge contending for a Triple Crown has faded since his prodigious display at the All-Star Home Run Derby. Since the break, Judge is hitting .158 (9 for 57) with 25 strikeouts. He went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts and a walk on Sunday. His 33 homers still lead the AL, but his average has dropped to .302, 65 points behind league leader Jose Altuve, going into the series opener vs. Detroit.

                              CLIMB THAT CHART

Now that Adrian Beltre has gotten his 3,000 hit, he can quickly move up the all-time list. He's tied with Roberto Clemente for 30th place - next up are Al Kaline (3,007) and Wade Boggs (3,010). Beltre and Texas are set to face Felix Hernandez and the Mariners.

                              RAYS PEN

The Tampa Bay Rays and their new-look bullpen head to Houston as they try to make up ground in the AL wild-card race. Tampa Bay has traded for relievers Sergio Romo, Dan Jennings and Steve Cishek - who combined for three hitless innings in a win over the Yankees on Sunday - and designated hitter Lucas Duda, who's off to a 7 for 12 start. Facing the Astros, who have the best record in the AL, the Rays will start Alex Cobb (9-6, 3.46 ERA) against Charlie Morton (8-4, 3.83).

                              • Rockies pick up C Lucroy in deal with Rangers
                                July 30, 2017

WASHINGTON -- The Colorado Rockies acquired catcher Jonathan Lucroy from the Texas Rangers on Sunday in exchange for a player to be named.

The deal was announced in the middle of the Rockies' game Sunday night at Nationals Park, the nightcap of a doubleheader with the Washington Nationals.

"Getting Jonathan gives us a guy with some veteran presence behind the plate, just like Ryan Hanigan, as our young starters go into uncharted territory in the next two months," Rockies manager Bud Black said after Colorado lost 3-1 to split the doubleheader. "His track record is pretty good. The guy's an All-Star. He's had success in the major leagues both offensively and defensively, so we should feel good about this one."

Lucroy batted .242 with four home runs and 27 RBIs in 77 games with the Rangers this season, making a team-high 65 starts behind the plate as well as 10 starts as the designated hitter.

He threw out 13 of 44 attempted base-stealers, and he leads all major league catchers with 159 runners caught stealing since 2011.

"To get this type of player, it's going to pick everybody up," Black said.

Acquired by Texas in an Aug. 1, 2016, trade with Milwaukee, Lucroy finished a nearly year-long stint with the Rangers having batted .254 with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs in 124 contests for the club.

Rockies catchers Tony Wolters and Hanigan are hitting a combined .251 with two homers and 27 RBIs.

"From what we've done so far, I love everything we're doing," Rockies pitcher Jon Gray said. "I'm not an expert on all the trade stuff, but I completely trust what they're doing."

The Rangers claimed infielder Tyler Smith off waivers from the Seattle Mariners earlier in the day and optioned him to Triple-A Round Rock.

Smith, 26, made his major league debut with the Mariners this season, going 3-for-16 with a double and walk in 10 games.
