  • MLB roundup: Dodgers' Bellinger hits for cycle
    July 16, 2017

MIAMI -- Rookie Cody Bellinger hit for the cycle and Alex Wood improved to 11-0 to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 7-1 victory over the Miami Marlins on Saturday night.

The Dodgers have been playing baseball for 128 years, and Bellinger is the first rookie in franchise history to hit for the cycle and the ninth Dodgers player overall. Bellinger singled in the first inning, blasted a two-run homer in the third, slugged an RBI double in the fourth and got his triple when Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton had the ball tip off the top of his glove.

The four hits are a career high for Bellinger, who finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. His homer was his 26th of the season, and it sparked a five-run third inning in which all the scoring was done with two outs.

Wood, a first-time All-Star this year, improved his ERA to 1.56, allowing three hits and one walk in six scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Wood hasn't lost to the Marlins since 2014, going 6-0 against them in that span.

    Yankees 4, Red Sox 1 (16 innings)

BOSTON -- Didi Gregorius ripped a go-ahead RBI single to highlight a three-run 16th inning as New York defeated rival Boston in a five-hour, 50-minute game.

Matt Holliday clubbed a game-tying solo homer in the ninth, his 16th of the season, off closer Craig Kimbrel for New York, which bounced back after blowing a 4-3 ninth-inning lead in Friday's 5-4 loss.

Boston's Chris Sale, the American League starter in the All-Star Game on Tuesday, matched a season high with 13 strikeouts in 7 2/3 scoreless innings. The left-hander allowed three hits and two walks before being relieved by Kimbrel, who proceeded to blow his second save since July 3 and his first at Fenway. Doug Fister (0-3) took the loss.

    Athletics 5, Indians 3

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Khris Davis hit a two-run, walk-off homer to power Oakland past Cleveland.

Davis hit Bryan Shaw's 3-2 fastball over the fence for his 25th home run and second walk-off hit of the season. Yonder Alonso led off with a walk against Andrew Miller (3-3), who gave way to Shaw, and Davis ended the game.

Oakland rookie Matt Chapman hit his first two career home runs, solo shots in the third and eighth innings. Chapman went 3-for-3, scored three runs and also doubled. He had multi extra-base hits in a game for the first time in his career.

    Nationals 10, Reds 7

CINCINNATI -- Anthony Rendon hit two home runs, including his second career grand slam, and drove in six runs to back Max Scherzer's six scoreless innings as Washington defeated Cincinnati.

Rendon was on base five times with a single and two walks for the Nationals. It was his third career multi-homer game. Scherzer (10-5) struck out 10 to extend his National League-leading strikeout total to 183.

The Reds' Luis Castillo (1-2), who picked up his first career win in his last start, worked six innings, allowing three runs, three hits and four walks. Cincinnati scored five runs in the ninth highlighted by Scooter Gennett's three-run homer.

    Cubs 10, Orioles 3

BALTIMORE -- Jake Arrieta threw 6 2/3 strong innings in his return to Baltimore and Jason Heyward added a three-run triple as Chicago hit three home runs in its rout of Baltimore.

The Orioles traded Arrieta (9-7) to the Cubs in 2013, and the right-hander developed into one of the game's best pitchers after going 20-25 with a 5.46 ERA in Baltimore. He's 63-28 as a Cub, including two no-hitters and a Cy Young Award (2015).

Chicago received solo home runs from Albert Almora, Addison Russell and Anthony Rizzo. Heyward's triple was the big hit in a four-run fifth inning that gave the Cubs a 7-0 lead.

    Brewers 3, Phillies 2

MILWAUKEE -- Jimmy Nelson struck out nine and Travis Shaw snapped a tie game with a solo home run in the eighth to lead Milwaukee past Philadelphia.

Pat Neshek struck out the top of the Brewers' lineup in order in the seventh to preserve the tie, but Shaw connected a 1-1 fastball from Joaquin Benoit (1-4) to open the eighth for his 20th home run of the season.

Jacob Barnes (2-1) walked two in a scoreless eighth inning and Corey Knebel kept Philadelphia off the board in the ninth to lock down his 16th save of the season. Nelson allowed two runs and three hits in 6 2/3 innings.

    Rays 6, Angels 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Alex Cobb continued his run of stout starts and Logan Morrison and Steven Souza Jr. homered as Tampa Bay defeated Los Angeles.

Cobb (8-6) allowed one run, six hits and three walks in 7 2/3 innings and was in command from the start. It was Cobb's seventh straight start of six innings or more, a career high. He's allowed only 36 hits in 49 1/3 innings during that span and two earned runs or fewer six times.

Corey Dickerson had four hits and Shane Peterson collected three for the Rays, who are 2 1/2 games behind first-place Boston in the American League East. Luis Valbuena homered twice for the Angels, who are 2-6 in their last eight games.

    Twins 4, Astros 2

HOUSTON -- Eddie Rosario turned a fortuitous bounce into a two-run double as Minnesota squeezed out a victory over Houston.

With the bases loaded and no outs in the sixth inning, Rosario bounced a chopper off the extended glove of Astros left-hander Tony Sipp. The deflected ball squirted past second baseman Jose Altuve, who was sliding in position to field the grounder.

The Twins' Ervin Santana (11-6) allowing two runs, five hits and five walks in six innings. Relievers Tyler Duffey and Taylor Rogers bridged the gap to All-Star closer Brandon Kintzler, who notched his 25th save with a scoreless ninth.

    Braves 8, Diamondbacks 5

ATLANTA -- Pinch hitter Lane Adams delivered a three-run double in a four-run sixth inning as Atlanta defeated Arizona.

The Diamondbacks' Patrick Corbin stretched his scoreless streak against the Braves to 27 2/3 innings before a third-inning homer by Brandon Phillips. He was in line for a fourth victory until Atlanta got the best of the Arizona bullpen.

The key two-out hit was by reserve outfielder Adams, who has eight RBIs on his six pinch hits in 25 at-bats this season. Randall Delgado (1-2) was charged with all four runs in the eighth, allowing three hits and a walk while getting just two outs.

    Rangers 1, Royals
    0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Shin-Soo Choo's opposite-field single with one out in the ninth inning scored pinch runner Joey Gallo and gave Texas the victory over Kansas City.

Jonathan Lucroy led off the ninth with a single and Gallo ran for him. Delino DeShields' sacrifice bunt advanced Gallo to second. Choo, who was mired in a 4-for-33 skid, singled to left on Danny Duffy's next pitch.

Duffy (5-6) permitted one run on five hits over 8 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked none. Texas' Cole Hamels pitched 7 2/3 innings, working out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth.

    Cardinals 4, Pirates 0

PITTSBURGH -- Lance Lynn pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings and singled and scored as St. Louis topped Pittsburgh.

Lynn (8-6) combined with relievers Matt Bowman, Trevor Rosenthal and Tyler Lyons for the nine-hit shutout. Lynn struck out three and walked none as he improved to 5-1 within the National League Central.

Tommy Pham was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Cardinals, who scored one run in the fourth and three in the fifth. The Pirates' Jameson Taillon (5-3) gave up four runs and eight hits in five innings, with five strikeouts and no walks.

    Mets 9, Rockies 3

NEW YORK -- Seth Lugo tossed 6 2/3 solid innings and helped his own cause by homering in the third inning as New York cruised past Colorado.

Lugo (4-2) allowed three runs, seven hits and two walks while striking out five. Jay Bruce belted a three-run homer in the first inning against Rockies right-hander Tyler Chatwood (6-11), who got just one out before departing with a strained calf.

Jose Reyes homered leading off the eighth and finished with two hits and a stolen base for the Mets. New York left fielder Yoenis Cespedes left with a leg injury after sliding awkwardly in pursuit of a foul ball in the sixth inning.

    Padres 5, Giants 3

SAN DIEGO -- Madison Bumgarner was sharp in his return, but San Diego defeated San Francisco.

Bumgarner, a four-time All-Star and the 2014 World Series MVP, didn't show much rust. He worked seven innings and surrendered three runs and four hits. He had five strikeouts and two walks in a 102-pitch effort.

Hector Sanchez's two-run homer off Steven Okert in the ninth inning was the difference. Sanchez, in the lineup for injured Austin Hedges, smacked the first pitch he saw 407 feet into the left-field seats for the Padres' sixth win in nine games.

    Tigers 11, Blue Jays 1

DETROIT -- Michael Fulmer checked Toronto on two hits in eight innings and Detroit utilized the long ball and the wildness of Toronto starter Francisco Liriano in its blowout victory.

J.D. Martinez hit his 15th homer of the season, a three-run shot in the eighth inning, for the Tigers. Jose Iglesias scored on a fielder's choice and Miguel Cabrera clouted a two-run homer, his 12th of the year, during a three-run Detroit sixth.

Liriano (5-5), who left in the third inning without retiring a batter after walking the bases loaded, allowed five earned runs and three hits. Fulmer (10-6) posted his fourth straight victory.

    Mariners 4, White Sox 3

CHICAGO -- Nelson Cruz belted a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth inning, slumping Kyle Seager hit a solo shot in the second and Seattle held on for its third straight victory.

Cruz greeted Anthony Swarzak (4-3), Chicago's second reliever, with his 18th homer on a deep drive to center. Seager's homer was his 11th, but his first -- and only his fourth hit -- in his last 10 games.

The Mariners' Felix Hernandez (5-3) scuffled, but got the win in his fifth start since returning from the disabled list. The 2010 AL Cy Young winner lasted five innings, giving up six hits and three runs (one earned).

    • Sunday’s six-pack

      — ’96 Indians hit a double in 75 consecutive games, which is the all-time record- next highest streak is 51, by the ’99 Braves.

      — Dodgers are first team EVER to have a rookie hit 25+ HR’s three years in a row.

      — Colorado is going to limit some of their young starters’ innings; 4 of their 5 starters are rookies, so this makes sense.

      — Zack Cozart got his donkey from Joey Votto for making the All-Star Game.

      — Johnny Cueto (blisters) is on the DL. This year’s baseballs are giving more pitchers blisters, and that is a problem.

      — RIP Babe Parilli 87; one of the AFL’s best QB’s- he played college ball for Bear Bryant at Kentucky.

      Sunday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind………

      13) Two-way G-League contracts that marginal NBA players will sign (two per team) can be worth as much as $270,000 per player. Beats going over to Europe to play. So technically, NBA teams will have 17-man rosters this year- the two-way players can spend as many as 45 days in the NBA, before their deal would have to be upgraded to a regular NBA contract.

      12) In NBA Summer League, when guys are fighting like hell to get a contract, they run over and pick up teammates after they get fouled. They root for their teammates while they’re on the bench, they do all the little suck-up things that scrubs in high school do when they’re fighting an uphill battle to make the team. It is amusing.

I’ll check back in in November/December and see how much of this is going on once the regular season starts.

      11) Dennis Smith Jr looks like a steal for the Mavericks with the #9 pick in the draft; he had an excellent July in two summer leagues, but he tried to dunk in traffic during Thursday’s game, and missed. He really has great athletic ability- maybe the Knicks should’ve taken him with the 8th pick in the draft.

Anyway, ESPN’s Mark Jones lost his mind on the air about the dunk attempt, gushing over and over about a missed dunk. Luckily the mute button was within arm’s reach.

      10) The one thing you don’t want to hear a scout say about a prospect: “Sometimes I question his motor.” Translated: “He doesn’t try hard all the time.”

      9) White Sox trading Jose Quintana to the Cubs Thursday was the first Windy City trade in 11 years, when the Sox dealt lefty reliever Neal Cotts for David Aardsma and Carlos Vazquez. Over the last 50 years, the two Chicago teams have made 18 trades with each other.

      8) I had never heard of Steve Whitmore until this week; turns out he has been the voice of Kermit the Frog since the death of Muppets creator Jim Henson in 1990. Whitmore was fired as Kermit’s voice this week; Disney, which owns the Muppet Studio, offered no explanation.

Kind of sad that a guy who worked for The Muppets since 1978 is now out of work.

      7) Former Georgetown coach John Thompson III has surfaced as a studio analyst on NBA TV, during the summer league, at least.

      6) Western Kentucky hired Mark Hsu as an assistant basketball coach; he comes from New Mexico State/Cal-Bakersfield— this hire was widely approved on Twitter. Hsu will help the Hilltoppers, who lost two assistants earlier this month.

      5) Knicks traded a 2nd-round pick and cash to Sacramento so they could hire Scott Perry as their new GM. Perry went 19-61 as coach at Eastern Kentucky from 1997-2000, and never was a head coach again after that. Now he is the GM of an NBA team.

      4) ESPN analyst Rip Hamilton said that he used to change sneakers every two games, when he was an NBA star. When you’re a star and the sneakers are free, you can do that.

      3) For whatever reason, Bark at the Park Night has become a popular night at some major league ballparks. No idea why anyone would want to bring their dog to a ballgame, but they do.

      2) Mets 14, Rockies 2— Friday night, Colorado had a runner thrown out at home on a sac fly to fairly deep left field when the score was 9-2. Great throw, horrendous baserunning.

      1) Warren LeGarie is Executive Director of the Las Vegas NBA Summer League; he is also an agent, for both coaches and players— he started as a player agent for guys playing in Europe. Among his current clients are Rick Carlisle, George Karl, Terry Stotts and Dave Joerger.

The success of the summer league is mostly his doing— it has become a fun event to attend, and it is also good on TV. Filled up the baseball All-Star break for me, I know that. Thanks!!!

          • Puig confronts Marlins pitcher after nearly being hit
            July 15, 2017

MIAMI (AP) An angry Yasiel Puig was wrong to take several steps toward the mound after he was nearly hit by a pitch Saturday, his manager said.

The first pitch to the Dodgers slugger in the second inning by Miami's Jose Urena was a 96 mph fastball that just missed Puig's left thigh. Puig shouted at Urena and took several steps as some players and both managers ran onto the field.

Catcher J.T. Realmuto stepped in front of Puig, and after some yelling the confrontation quickly ended. Puig then flied out.

''Yasiel overreacted,'' manager Dave Roberts said. ''It's clear to me there was no intent (by Urena).''

            The Marlins right-hander agreed.

''He got like a little baby,'' Urena said. ''When he was walking (toward) me, that was disrespect. I play the game. I respect the game. If you do something like that, let's go.''

Puig hit two home runs in the Dodgers' win Friday, including a go-ahead, three-run homer in the ninth inning. He finished 0 for 2 Saturday in Los Angeles' 7-1 victory.

Benches cleared when the teams met in Los Angeles in May, prompting the ejections of Marlins manager Don Mattingly, Dodgers reliever Ross Stripling and Dodgers bench coach Bob Geren.

            • LEADING OFF: Quintana debuts for Cubs, Yanks-Bosox twinbill
              July 15, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Sunday:

              RIGHT ON Q

Jose Quintana makes his debut for the Chicago Cubs when he starts at Baltimore. Trying to make a playoff push, the World Series champions acquired the All-Star lefty from the crosstown White Sox on Thursday for four minor leaguers, including two top prospects. Quintana is 4-8 with a 4.49 ERA this year, including a loss at Camden Yards on May 7.

              DOUBLING UP

The Yankees and Red Sox are set for a day-night doubleheader at Fenway Park, a day after they played nearly six hours and 16 innings before New York won 4-1. With the way these AL East rivals drag through games, no telling what time in the wee hours they might eventually end. David Price, with a career 14-11 record in 37 games against the Yankees, starts the nightcap for first-place Boston against Masahiro Tanaka.

              WE'LL SEE

The NL Central-leading Brewers will see how star slugger Ryan Braun is feeling going into the series finale vs. Philadelphia at Miller Park. The former NL MVP has struggled with a strain in his left calf for several weeks, and manager Craig Counsell says the outfielder will be evaluated daily for the rest of the season. Braun has been on the disabled list twice this season with calf trouble.

              ANOTHER TRY

Homer Bailey faces Washington less than a month after the NL East leaders ruined his season debut. The 31-year-old Bailey, who has thrown two no-hitters for the Reds, was tagged for eight runs on six hits and three walks in just 1 2/3 innings June 24 at Nationals Park. Often injured, that was his first game in the majors since last August. He's 2-2 going into this start at Cincinnati.

              BACK ON THE HILL

Dodgers lefty Rich Hill is scheduled to start the series finale in Miami for the NL West leaders. Hill made his most recent appearance at Marlins Park last September, when he threw seven perfect innings before manager Dave Roberts pulled him, mindful the veteran had been sidelined by a blister earlier in the season. Three relievers completed a two-hit shutout.

                          July 16, 2017

Hottest team: Rays (4-0 past four games, 8-3 past 11 overall)

The Dodgers aren't the only team playing well right now. The Rays have ripped off four straight victories, including each of their first two games against the Angels in Anaheim, winning by a combined score of 8-3. Pitching has been the key for Tampa Bay's turnaround, as they have allowed just seven total runs during their four-game winning streak. The Rays have also ripped off five victories over their past six against American League West foes while winning five of their past seven against right-handed starters. They turn to Chris Archer for the sweep, and they have been hot with the Raleigh-born pitcher on the hill. Tampa Bay is 5-1 over Archer's past six outings, including 4-1 over his past five road assignments.

Coldest team: Royals (0-5 past five games overall)

The Royals have climbed back into contention in the wide-open American League Central Division, but if they want to keep their postseason aspirations alive they will need to snap their losing skid. They're one game under .500 as a result of their slide, but they're still just three games back of the first-place Indians, a team experiencing some issues of their own. Danny Duffy pitched into the ninth inning and was on the short end of a 1-0 loss to the Rangers. Pitching hasn't been the problem during their losing streak, but a power outage on offense has been the issue. The Royals are averaging just 2.0 runs per game during their 0-5 run.

Hottest pitcher: Carlos Martinez, Cardinals (6-8, 3.40 ERA)

Martinez is two games under .500, so how can he be the 'hottest pitcher' on the board? Well, of all the starters in the majors on Sunday, C-Mart has the lowest ERA at 3.40. The All-Star also has a stellar .213 opponent batting average and microscopic 1.16 WHIP over 116 1/3 innings across 18 starts. Unfortunately for Martinez, he ranks 16th in the majors with the lowest run support at 3.94 runs per game. The Cardinals are 26-11 over Martinez's past 37 starts against teams with a losing record, and 10-3 in his past 13 assignments on the road against teams with an overall losing mark.

Coldest pitcher: Masahiro Tanaka, Yankees (7-8, 5.47 ERA)

Tanaka will take the ball in Game 2 of Sunday's day-night doubleheader, and he will at least have the luxury of facing some bats slower than normal. That's because the rivals just played into the 16th inning on Saturday, and they'll have another full game under their belts by the time Tanaka toes the slab Sunday night at Fenway Park. Tanaka had things going in the right direction with three consecutive quality starts from June 23-July 3, but he was smacked around for five earnedruns, six hits and two homers in just 4 1/3 innings in a loss against the Brewers on July 9 before the break. The good news is Tanaka will be working under the lights, and there is a reason he isn't working Game 1 during the daytime. He is 0-5 with a 14.81 ERA over six daytime starts and 7-3 with a 3.10 ERA across 12 outings at night.

Biggest UNDER run: Cardinals (0-4 past four overall)

The 'under' has been a frequent occurrence for the Redbirds lately, going 0-4 over the past four outings and 4-1 intheir past five vs. RHP. In addition, the under is an impressive 11-3-3 in Martinez's past 17 outing against divisional foes. That includes a 4-0 under mark in his past four showings against the Pirates. The under has cashed in nine of the past 12 meetings in this series, including the first two in this series where an average of just 5.5 combined runs per game have been scored. The under is also 9-1-1 over Pittsburgh's past 11 outings.

Biggest OVER run: Blue Jays (5-1-1 past seven overall)

Toronto's pitching has struggled mightily in recent games, allowing double-digit run totals in three of the past five outings. That including an 11-run outburst by the Tigers at Comerica Park on Saturday. The Blue Jays are yielding 7.8 runs per game over the past 10 outings. For what it's worth, the 'over' has also cashed in four straight games for Toronto on a Sunday while going 5-1-1 in the past seven during a Game 3 of a series. The under is 11-1 in Marco Estrada's past 12 tries against American League Central foes, however, while the under is 21-9 in the team's past 30 against the Central overall.

Matchup to watch: Red Sox vs. Yankees

The Yankees are Red Sox went 16 innings in Saturday's game, now they turn around and will have a 1:05pm ET start with Bryan Mitchell facing Rick Porcello. In the nightcap, Masahiro Tanaka and David Price will lock horns.

Betcha didn’t know: As always, remember that only a quarter of all doubleheaders end up in a sweep. Looking back at this season's doubleheaders, the past two have been split, each taking place on July 1. In the previous 14 doubleheaders this season, 10 have resulted in splits, three have been a sweep and one saw Game 1 rained out. Two of the teams doing the sweeping were road teams. The Red Sox haven't been involved in a doubleheader this season, but the Yankees split a twin bill with the Astros at The Stadium back on May 14. The Red Sox had one doubleheader last season, splitting a pair in Kansas City on May 18. In 2015, the Yankees were on the short end of two doubleheader sweeps, each against divisional foes. The last time Boston swept a doubleheader was June 18, 2013 against the Rays. The last time the Yankees swept a DH was Aug. 20, 2013 at home against the Blue Jays.

Biggest public favorite: Astros (-190) vs. Twins

Biggest public underdog: White Sox (+115) vs.Mariners

Biggest line move: Athletics (+110 to -105) vs. Indians

                              — A’s 7, Indians 3— Trevor Bauer threw 43 pitches, never finished the first inning.

                              — RIP Martin Landau 89, who passed away Sunday. A great actor; he played the law professor in Rounders. His scenes with Matt Damon were tremendous.

                              ********************

                              Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend……

                              13) Being an A’s fan isn’t as fun as it used to be; Oakland had a great walk-off win Saturday night- they’re 6-2 in their last eight games, but then Sunday they traded Doolittle/Madson to Washington, for two Class A prospects and Blake Treinen, who if he was any good, this trade wouldn’t have happened.

I mentioned the other day how the A’s had roughly $24.5M on the books for 2018-20, total; well, dealing Doolittle/Madsen eliminates about half of that amount.

It is now an annual event, like the swallows returning to Capistrano; the A’s don’t contend, then they sell some of their decent players for minor leaguers in July, then are lousy the rest of the year, they make excuses about being a small market team. Oy.

On July 31, 2014, the then-contending A’s traded Yoenis Cespedes for free agent-to-be Jon Lester and Jonny Gomes- since that genius move, Oakland is 200-270, but no one in the front office gets fired. Coaches on field get fired; they don’t create the roster. Go figure.

                              12) A’s social media was working overtime after the trade was announced, liking every positive tweet that ran after the walk-off win Saturday night, trying to create positive vibes.

Positive vibes come from having a contending team, or at least trying to have one.

                              11) NL Wild Card race is going to get crazy; Rockies are 6-15 in their last 21 games; Arizona is 3-11 in its last 14 games, as the Dodgers pull away in the NL West. The Wild Card pack is going to catch up quickly unless the Rockies/D’Backs wake up.

                              10) Christopher Kamka on Twitter pointed out that Jose Quintana is 9th guy to pitch for both Cubs/White Sox in same season; last one was Matt Karchner, in 1998.

                              9) I’m adamant that when a player assists on a 3-point basket, he should get 1.5 assists; just like if a pass leads to free throws, he should get half an assist for each foul shot made.

                              8) Phillies-Brewers wore late 70’s/early 80’s throwbacks this weekend; Phillies wore light blue road unis, which lot of teams wore back then.

They closed the roof at Miller Park in the 2nd inning, which according to Brewers’ TV guys, changes how fly balls carry in the park. Ryan Braun struggled on a fly ball right after the roof closed. Once the roof is closed during a game, it cannot be re-opened during the game.

                              7) 7-foot and 8-foot high outfield fences are awesome in baseball, because guys can rob home runs. Marcell Ozuna made a great catch Sunday, robbing Kike Hernandez of a homer in the sixth inning. Check out MLB Network for highlights; you worry when a fielder climbs a chain-link fence- you don’t want his cleats to stick in there, but this was a tremendous play.

                              6) Chris Paul’s AAU team won the Peach Jam tournament in Augusta this weekend, which is a very good tournament. Decent amount of NBA players sponsor AAU teams.

                              5) Jordan Spieth’s brother Steven is on the Dallas Mavericks’ squad in the Las Vegas summer league. Steven went to college at Brown; he had 5 points against the Celtics Saturday night.

                              4) Odd Stats of the Day: The Cubs have won their last 13 games played on July 15.

Mets won their last 18 games when one of their pitchers homers in that game.

                              3) Seattle Mariners’ catcher Mike Zunino grew up in Florida; was he destined to play for Seattle? He played for Mariner High School is Cape Coral, FL.

                              2) Jed Lowrie makes $6.5M; he is now the Oakland A’s highest-paid player, which means he will be gone too, soon. Sonny Gray makes $3,575,000 a year; he better not get traded unless they get back really, really strong prospects in return. Good starting pitchers are invaluable.

                              1) Another Bastille Day passes with no mention of Sebastian Cabot, who played Mr French on the 60’s sitcom Family Affair. Who was more French than Mr French?all Capsules

BALTIMORE (AP) Jose Quintana dazzled in his debut for the Chicago Cubs, striking out a season-high 12 in seven innings to beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-0 on Sunday for a three-game sweep.

Acquired by the World Series champions during the All-Star break from the Chicago White Sox for a playoff push, Quintana (1-0) allowed three hits, walked none and joined Matt Garza as the only pitchers in Cubs history to fan 12 in their debut.

Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo homered to help the Cubs move over .500 for the first time since June 29. The Cubs hit 10 home runs during the sweep.

Ubaldo Jimenez (4-5) allowed six runs and 11 hits, one shy of tying a career-high, over 3 2/3 innings.

                              DODGERS 3, MARLINS 2

MIAMI (AP) - Justin Turner homered and singled to increase his batting average to .374, and Los Angeles won for the 29th time in 33 games, including nine in a row.

Five Los Angeles pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts with no walks. Kenley Jansen got the four outs for his 23rd save in as many chances as the Dodgers (64-29) climbed 35 games above .500 for the first time since 1977 by completing their big league-high 11th sweep.

Giancarlo Stanton lost his glove over the 8 1/2-foot wall in right field trying unsuccessfully to catch a triple by Chris Taylor.

Rich Hill (6-4) allowed one run and struck out nine in five innings.

Chris O'Grady (1-1), making his second big league start, gave up three runs in five innings.

                              NATIONALS 14, REDS 4

CINCINNATI (AP) - Daniel Murphy hit two of Washington's five home runs and had five RBIs.

Adam Lind and Jose Lobaton added two-run shots and Anthony Rendon had a solo homer, his third home run in two games, to help the Nationals to their fourth straight victory.

Earlier in the day, the Nationals acquired relievers Ryan Madson and Sean Doolittle from Oakland for right-hander Blake Treinen and a pair of prospects.

Tanner Roark (7-6) allowed three unearned runs in six innings, and Homer Bailey (2-3) gave up eight runs and hits in four innings.

YANKEES 3, RED SOX 0,1ST GAME

                              RED SOX 3, YANKEES 0, 2ND GAME

BOSTON (AP) - Mookie Betts hit a two-run homer and Jackie Bradley Jr. went over the bullpen wall to steal one from Aaron Judge, helping David Price shut down New York and giving Boston a split of the day-night doubleheader.

A day after the teams played 16 innings, they spent another long day at Fenway Park and ended the four-game series the way they started: with the Red Sox 3 1/2 games up in the AL East.

In the night game. Price (5-2) pitched eight innings, allowing seven hits and striking out eight. One night after giving up a tying homer in the ninth, Craig Kimbrel pitched the ninth for his 24th save.

Masahiro Tanaka (7-9) gave up three runs on eight hits in 7 2/3 innings, striking out nine. The Yankees are the last team in the majors to be shut out.

Charlie Blackmon was credited with an inside-the-park home run - even though his drive actually cleared the orange line atop left-center field fence - and Gerardo Parra also went deep to help the Rockies win for only the sixth time in 21 games.

DJ LeMahieu and Mark Reynolds each had four of Colorado's 18 hits to back rookie Jeff Hoffman (6-1), handed a huge early lead while pitching with family and friends in the stands. Choo tried to shield his eyes, but even sunglasses didn't help on Cain's sliced flyball.

Kelvin Herrera (2-2) pitched a spotless ninth. Jason Grilli (2-5), acquired by Rangers from Toronto on July 2, took the loss.

Who was more French than Mr French?
