    • Wednesday's Diamond Notes
      June 28, 2017

Hottest team: Athletics (4-0 past four games, 8-4 past 12 overall)

The Athletics kicked off their series Tuesday in Houston with a 6-4 win, hanging on in the ninth inning for the road win. It comes on the heels of a three-game sweep at Chicago White Sox when they outscored the Pale Hose 18-5 in the three-game road sweep. It's the second four-game winning streak to the Athletics since June 15, and they followed up their last one with a four-game losing streak. Before the current four-game road winning streak the A's were just 5-23 in their past previous 28 outings away from home. Since they're bucking trends, perhaps they'll buck another one Wednesdawy. The A's are 0-6 over Jesse Hahn's past six road outings and 1-5 in his past six on the road against a winning team.

Coldest team: Rockies (0-7 past seven games)

The Rockies haven't appeared on the cold list this season, but they have dropped seven in a row to fall behind the Dodgers and Diamondbacks in the National League West. While pair of losses to close out their series against the D-Backs, and a three-game sweep on the road against the Dodgers wasn't completely shocking, two setbacks and being outscored 13-5 by the cellar-dwelling Giants certainly has been stunning. The Rox turn to Kyle Freelan to stem the tide of losing. They're 6-2 over Freeland's past eight road outings, 9-4 across his past 13 starts overall and 5-1 in his past six starts inside the division.

Hottest pitcher: Zack Godley, Diamondbacks (3-1, 2.53 ERA)

Godley has been a godsend for the Snakes this season, posting a 3-1 record with a 2.53 ERA and .202 opponent batting average across 57 innings over nine starts. He also sports an impressive 1.00 WHIP while striking out 52 batters and walking just 17. A huge key to his success has been his ability to keep the ball in the yard, limiting opposing hitters to just four homers so far. Last season, when he appeared in 27 games (nine starts), he had a 6.39 ERA with 53 homers allowing over 74 2/3 innings. Perhaps the Cardinals are the perfect opponent for Godley to stay hot, as St. Louis is just 3-12 over their past 15 road games and 3-12 across their past 15 road games vs. RHP.

Coldest pitcher: John Lackey, Cubs (5-8, 4.74 ERA)

Lackey takes the ball in Wednesday's battle against Stephen Strasburg and the Nationals. He has a decent .255 opponent batting average through 87 1/3 innings across 15 starts, but he has served up 21 home runs, which is third-most in the majors behind Cincinnati's Bronson Arroyo and L.A. Angels' Ricky Nolasco (23). The defending champion Cubs are just 6-14 over their past 20 games on the road, 0-4 in their past four against a right-handed starter and 2-5 in Lackey's past seven outings.

Biggest UNDER run: Cubs (5-0 past five games, 10-1 past 11 overall)

The 'under' has cashed in five in a row for the defending champs, as they have scored just 13 runs (2.6 runs per game). Chicago's pitching continues to be solid, allowing an average of just 2.6 runs per game over the past 10. That lack of hitting and solid pitching is a perfect recipe for 'under' results, and lots of them. While Lackey (see above) has served up plenty of homers, he has actually been decent on the road. The 'under' is 5-1-1 over his past seven starts overall, and 5-0 in the past five on the road. The under is 23-9 in Chicago's past 32 games while going 20-6 in their past 26 tries vs. RHP.

Biggest OVER run: Reds (40-18-2 past 60 overall, 5-2 past seven home games)

The 'over' has been making total bettors a lot of money if they've been pounding Cincinnati games all season long. The over is an impressive 40-18-2 over the past 60 games, 33-16-2 in their past 51 inside the NL Central Division and 5-2 over their past seven at home. In addition, the over is a whopping 21-5 over the past 26 for Cincinnati when facing a team with an overall winning record. They have also handled the twig well against teams using a right-handed starter, as the over is 8-1 in those situations. And the over is a perfect 4-0 in the past four meetings with the Brewers, including Tuesday's 8-6 slugfest win.

Matchup to watch: Padres vs. Braves

The Braves welcome back veteran Bartolo Colon (oblique, back) from the 10-day disabled list to pitch against the Padres. While he has an ugly 2-7 record and 7.78 ERA through 59 innings this season, his best start came against San Diego back on April 16. He allowed just one run and one hit over seven innings with six strikeouts in a win against the Padres. That was just one of two quality starts for Colon in 12 outings this season. The Padres turn to Luis Perdomo, and they're 4-1 over his past five starts at home, including 4-0 in his past four at home against teams with a losing overall mark. The Padres are also an impressive 10-4 in their past 14 home games against a team with a losing road mark.

Betcha didn’t know: If you look at the league leaders in ERA, you'll see a lot of the usual suspects. But Milwaukee's Chase Anderson might be one of the more unheralded pitchers on the list, checking in 10th in the majors with a 2.92 ERA through 15 starts. He has recorded 84 strikeouts through 89 1/3 innings while holding the opposition to a .226 average. While all of that is well and good, the Brewers are still just 7-15 over Anderson's past 22 road starts. While he has been solid at home with a 3-0 record, 2.15 ERA and .202 opponent average, he is a mediocre 3-2 with a 3.92 ERA and a .255 opponent batting average over seven outings on the road.

Biggest public favorite: Mariners (-190) vs. Phillies

Biggest public underdog: Rockies (+110) at Giants

Biggest line move: Angels (+130 to +105) vs. Dodgers

          • MLB Daily Line Drive: Wednesday's Picks, Betting Odds and Analysis

            Double-Play Picks

New York Yankees at Chicago White Sox (+120, 9)

The early season good feelings surrounding the Yankees, due to a hot start and the emergence of Aaron Judge, has faded slightly since the Bronx Bombers have stumbled a bit of late, especially on the road. Despite the struggles, New York will try to take the third game of a four-game set against the White Sox in Chicago.

New York has lost seven of their last eight road games and seven of their last 10 overall, but were able to take Game 1 of this series 6-5 on Monday night, before falling just short of a comeback win in a 4-3 loss last night.

The Yankees hand the ball to Masahiro Tanaka for Game 3. The Japanese right-hander has been inconsistent this season, but is coming off eight innings of shutout ball against the Rangers, in which he allowed just three hits and struck out nine.

Tanaka has dominated the White Sox over the course of his career as well, going 3-0 with a 2.05 ERA and a 1.253 WHIP with 25 strikeouts and eight walks in four starts. The Yankees are also 7-0 in Tanaka’s last seven starts versus American League Central opponents.

He faces a White Sox lineup that ranks 20th in runs per game, 23rd in OPS and 23rd in home runs.

Meanwhile the White Sox counter with Carlos Rodon, who is making his first start of the season. Rodon missed almost the first three months of the season due to a bursitis in his left bicep (his throwing arm).

The hard-throwing south paw has been roughed up by the Yanks in the past, pitching to a 9.64 ERA and a 2.571 in three career starts and that was pre-awesome Aaron Judge.

The Yankees offense has slowed a little, but this is a situation in which they could really explode.

            Pick: Yankees -141

St. Louis Cardinals at Arizona Cardinals (-130, 9.5)

The Cardinals and Diamondbacks collide for Game 2 of their three-game series in the desert Wednesday night. The blazing hot D-Backs took the opener Tuesday by taking down the Cards, in a game started by ace Carlos Martinez, in a late-inning comeback and tenth inning walk-off, 6-5.

Tonight the Diamondbacks will send their hottest arm NOT named Robbie Ray to the hill. Arizona has won seven of Zack Godley's last eight starts, including his last five outings. Over those last five games Godley owns an ERA of 2.59, a WHIP of 0.9574, 32 strikeouts in 31.1 innings pitched, and has only allowed two home runs.

Godley will be countered on the Cardinals' side by veteran right-hander Adam Wainwright. The Cards have lost three of "Waino's" last four starts and he has been absolutely trashed in his last two appearances on the road. In previous road starts in Baltimore against the Orioles and in Cincinnati against the Reds, Wainwright has allowed nine earned runs in 1.2 innings pitched and nine earned runs over 3.2 innings respectively. The math on that works out to an ERA of 30.38 and he allowed three home runs during those 1.2 innings in Baltimore.

The D-Backs own the second best home record in baseball at 30-10 and they are 15-2 in their last 17 games at Chase Field. The Cards, on the other hand, are 3-12 in their last 15 road games.

            Pick: Diamondbacks (-130)

            Yesterday's Picks: 0-2
            Season To Date: 74-66-7

            Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

            Streaking:
Luis Perdomo, San Diego Padres (2-4, 4.56, $-211)

You don't often hear much about the San Diego Padres pitching staff, unless it's for very negative reasons like Jered Weaver, but young right-hander Luis Perdomo has been putting together some good starts lately.

Over his last three outings, Perdomo is 2-1 with a 2.41 ERA. His walks are slightly high at nine but the Padres average runs against in those three starts is only 1.67. He owns a ground ball to fly ball ratio of 4.00 over his last three (and 4.86 this season overall) so he's getting out of jams with double-play balls.

Perdomo and the Padres are -120 favorites at home tonight against the Braves.

            Slumping:
Ty Blach, San Francisco Giants (4-5, 4.86 ERA, $-319)

Giants’ right-hander Ty Blach has be the epitome of a slumping starter after initially giving the San Francisco pitching staff a boost when he joined the rotation at the end of April.

The Giants have lost the rookie southpaw’s last four starts, where he has pitched to a 9.28 ERA and a 1.922 WHIP.

Blach and the Giants are currently slight -102 home dogs this afternoon against the visiting Rockies.

            Wednesday's Top Trends

            * The Colorado Rockies are 0-7 in their last seven overall. -108 today @ Giants.
            * The Chicago Cubs are 7-0 in their last seven games following a loss. +145 today @ Nationals.
            * Under is 15-3 in the last 18 meetings between the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays. O/U: 9.5.
            * The Detroit Tigers are 0-6 in their last six games vs. a right-handed starter. -140 today vs. Royals (Ian Kennedy).

Weather To Keep An Eye On

The only chance of precipitation in today's MLB forecast is Chicago where the White Sox will host the New York Yankees tonight. Everything should be fine if the game moves along at a reasonable pace, but there are thunderstorms expected to move in at around 11:00 PM local time.

There is a 15 mile per hour hitter's wind blowing out to left-center field for this afternoon's game between the Rockies and Giants at AT&T Park. This wind is a usual occurrence in San Francisco and the total is currently at 9. There will also be a strong hitter's wind in Cleveland for tonight's game between the Rangers and Indians. A 10-15 mile per hour wind is expected to be blowing out to right-center field and the total for this one is also currently set at 9.

The strongest wind of the day will be a 22-25 mile per hour right-to-left cross wind for the Yanks/White Sox game in Chicago. The total for that one is also set at 9.

            Ump Of The Day

Jeff Nelson will be behind the plate this afternoon in San Francisco for the game between the Rockies and Giants. In Nelson's last 11 games behind the plate this season the Over is 8-1-2 and his games this season are averaging 3.13 home runs per contest.

The total for this one is set at 9.

              Wednesday MLB Betting Preview
Baltimore Orioles vs. Toronto Blue Jays

Sportsbook.ag Odds: Baltimore (+175), Toronto (-205); Total set at 9.5

It's been a few games since Baltimore's pitching staff set the mark for futility with 5+ runs allowed in double-digit games, and the Orioles have actually gone 3-0 SU since that streak was snapped.

Allowing just a single run off a solo HR in the bottom of the ninth last night was quite the performance by their pitchers, and manager Buck Showalter would love to see that become more of the norm.

Sadly, that likely won't be the case as Baltimore as too many holes throughout their pitching staff to let a few solid performances persuade some into believing they've righted that ship.

              Odds per - Sportsbook.ag

              Best Bet: Baltimore/Toronto Over 9.5

Baltimore has been one of the best 'over' bets in the American League with their 41-32 O/U mark on the year and that ratio will likely only increase as the season wears on. Last night's performance was quite good, but Toronto's had tremendous trouble hitting with runners in scoring position all year long and it might have been a perfect spot for the Orioles pitching staff to bounce back.

Baltimore is still built to win those 6-5 type games that are predominant in AL East games with mashing lineups and small ballparks and tonight's Game 2 of this series could end up being a classic example of that.

For one, Toronto's starter Marcus Stroman – who doesn't deserve to be laying -205 by the way – is coming off one of his roughest outings of the year in an 11-4 loss at Texas. Stroman gave up three HR's and 7 runs in just four innings of work that day and faces another tough lineup tonight. For all the narratives of him being a great pitcher in this league and primed for a bounce-back tonight, I simply don't buy it as his problems arise when his pitches aren't staying down in the strike zone.

Baltimore can be a patient team at the plate when they want to be and will look to force Stroman to get the ball up this evening so they can take advantage. This Orioles lineup hasn't faced Stroman yet this season, but they've seen plenty of him in the past, and in four of the seven games they've faced him, they've managed to put up at least 4 runs. We also can't forget that for all the people that will tell you Stroman is dominant – and he can be when he's on – Toronto still has an 8-6 O/U record this year in his 14 starts.

Part of that O/U record is due to Toronto's own offense giving Stroman plenty of support (5.7/game) and we could easily see them hit that number tonight. Lefty Wade Miley is on the hill for Baltimore and this will be his third time seeing the Jays already this year. His first start was a 6-4 win in Toronto at the beginning of the year and this game could very well play out in a similar fashion.

Toronto has a right-handed heavy lineup and while they haven't mashed southpaws nearly as well as they did in 2015, they can still get it done from that side of the plate and should be quite determined to prove themselves offensively after last night's lackluster performance.

Finally, while it didn't work out for us last night, we've got another umpire behind the dish who is quite favorable to offenses.

Quinn Walcott has a 10-4 O/U record this year behind the plate and those 14 games have seen an average of 11.2 runs scored/game. He's a perfect 2-0 O/U when there is a righty vs lefty like we've got tonight and he's already seen both of these two teams this year. In two games involving Toronto this year, Walcott saw 11 and 16 runners cross the dish, and his lone game involving Baltimore capped out at 16 combined runs.

              • Montero says goodbye to Cubs hours after blasting Arrieta
                June 28, 2017

WASHINGTON (AP) Catcher Miguel Montero is saying his goodbyes to the Cubs and city of Chicago.

Montero posted a series of tweets Wednesday, one day after blaming pitcher Jake Arrieta for allowing seven stolen bases by the Washington Nationals. The team had no immediate comment amid reports that the 33-year-old Montero was being designated for assignment.

''It was an honor to play for the Chicago Cubs organization,'' Montero tweeted . ''Chicago will always be in my heart.''

Montero has thrown out one of 31 potential base stealers this season, hitting .286 with four home runs and eight RBIs in 44 games.

Montero unloaded on Arrieta following the Cubs' 6-1 loss at Washington on Tuesday night, saying the Nationals were running all over the right-hander because they knew he was slow to the plate and that he was giving him no time to throw anyone out.

''It really sucked because the stolen bases go to me, and when you really look at it, the pitcher doesn't give me any time,'' Montero said. ''So it's just like, `Yeah, OK, Miggy can't throw nobody out,' but my pitcher doesn't hold anybody on.''

Trea Turner stole four bases, Michael Taylor two and Anthony Rendon one for a Montreal Expos/Nationals franchise record. Montero had a throwing error that led to a run scoring.

First baseman Anthony Rizzo said on ESPN1000-AM radio in Chicago that Montero's comments were unprofessional and not acceptable.

''We win as a team, we lose as a team,'' Rizzo said. ''If you start pointing fingers, I think that just labels you as a selfish player. I disagree. I think we have another catcher that throws out anyone who steals.''

Willson Contreras has thrown out 16 of 31 potential base stealers this season and is the Cubs' starting catcher. After the game, manager Joe Maddon said Arrieta and Montero working together was ''an imperfect situation.''

''It's not about the move to first; it's about time to the plate more than anything,'' Maddon said. ''He's a little bit slow... It's something that he works on. There are times he's quicker or better with it, but guys like Turner who are premier runners, it's really difficult to get down to the number that makes it amenable even for a Willson. The best anecdote is to keep that guy off the base.''

Montero drove in what wound up being the winning run in Game 7 of the World Series against Cleveland, ending the Cubs' championship drought. During spring training, Montero expressed frustration at being a backup catcher again. Maddon at the time said: ''We do not win the ring without him.''

                  • MLB notebook: Cubs designate Montero for assignment
                    June 28, 2017

The Chicago Cubs designated Miguel Montero for assignment on Wednesday, one day after the catcher publicly called out starter Jake Arrieta for seven stolen bases by the Washington Nationals.

The Cubs didn't officially announce the move until the afternoon, but Montero confirmed it to MLB.com and took to social media to thank the city of Chicago and teammates for their support.

Montero's comments following Tuesday night's 6-1 setback to the Nationals likely played a role in the Cubs' decision to let him go.

"That's the reason they were running left and right (Tuesday) because they were slow to the plate," Montero said of his pitchers, including Arrieta, following the loss. "Simple as that. It's a shame it's my fault because I didn't throw anyone out.

"It really (stunk) because the stolen bases go on me, but when you really look at it the pitcher doesn't give me any time, so yeah, 'Miggy can't throw anyone out,' but my pitchers don't hold anyone on."

Montero, who was 1-for-32 in throwing out basestealers this season, told ESPN 1000 Chicago on Wednesday that he apologized to Arrieta for his comments.

The Cubs called up catcher Victor Caratini from Triple-A Iowa.

--Seattle Mariners left-hander Drew Smyly will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the 2017 season, the team announced.

Dr. James Andrews is scheduled to perform an ulnar collateral reconstruction on Smyly's left elbow on July 6 in Birmingham, Ala., according to Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto.

Typical recovery time from a UCL reconstruction surgery is 12 to 15 months, meaning Smyly is likely to miss most or all of the 2018 season as well.

--San Francisco Giants closer Mark Melancon was placed on the 10-day disabled list with the same injury that sidelined him in May.

Melancon, who was sidelined nearly two weeks in May with a right pronator strain in his forearm, had a recurrence of the injury. The Giants recalled right-hander Dan Slania from Double-A Richmond in a corresponding move.

San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said that Sam Dyson would fill the closer role until further notice.

Signed to a four-year, $62 million deal in the offseason as a free agent, Melancon allowed seven earned runs in 10 innings since returning May 19. He has 11 saves with a 1-2 record and 4.35 ERA this season.

--The New York Mets placed right-hander Robert Gsellman on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring.

Infielder Matt Reynolds was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to take the roster spot of Gsellman, who became the sixth Mets' starting pitcher to go on the disabled list this season.

The 23-year-old Gsellman owns a 5-5 mark with a 6.16 ERA in 17 appearances (14 starts) this season.

--The New York Yankees placed designated hitter Matt Holliday on the 10-day disabled list with a viral infection.

Third baseman Miguel Andujar was called up from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take the roster spot of Holliday, who admitted he had no energy over the last few days. Holliday's move to the disabled list is retroactive to June 25.

Also, the Yankees announced first baseman Chris Carter has accepted an assignment to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

                    • LEADING OFF: Kershaw starts for Dodgers
                      June 28, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Thursday:

                      KERSHAW DAY

The Los Angeles Dodgers send Clayton Kershaw to the mound for the finale of their four-game Freeway Series against the rival Angels. Kershaw is 7-0 with a 2.38 ERA in his last 10 starts. The three-time NL Cy Young Award winner is 5-2 with a 2.69 ERA in nine career starts against the Angels. He will be opposed by JC Ramirez, who pitched six effective innings in a win at Boston in his previous start on Saturday.

                      SLIDING ROCKIES

The Colorado Rockies get a sorely needed day off before beginning a weekend series at surging Arizona. Colorado has dropped a season-high eight in a row, falling off the pace in the loaded NL West. The Rockies have been outscored 66-23 during the skid. Right-hander Jon Gray, who started on opening day for Colorado, is set to come off the disabled list and start the series opener against the Diamondbacks. He has been out since April with a stress fracture on his left foot.

                      HERE COMES KLUBER

Corey Kluber looks to continue his roll when he pitches for Cleveland in the finale of a four-game set against Texas. The 2014 AL Cy Young Award winner is 3-0 with a sparkling 1.29 ERA in his last five starts. The right-hander has struck out at least 10 batters in four of his five June outings. Andrew Cashner is expected to come off the disabled list to start for the Rangers. He has been sidelined by a strained left oblique.

                      FENWAY FUN

Kyle Gibson is hoping to add to a successful June when Minnesota closes out a four-game series at Boston on the anniversary of his major league debut in 2013. The 29-year-old right-hander is 3-1 with a 4.13 ERA in five starts so far this month. He has allowed only one run in 15 innings in two career starts at Fenway Park. David Price gets the ball for the Red Sox. Price has won his last five decisions against the Twins.

                        • Safe at home; MLB umpire Tumpane rescues woman on bridge
                          June 29, 2017

PITTSBURGH (AP) John Tumpane can't explain why he approached the woman as she hopped over the railing of the Roberto Clemente Bridge on Wednesday afternoon.

The woman told Tumpane she just wanted to get a better view of the Allegheny River below. The look on her face and the tone of her voice suggested otherwise to Tumpane, a major league baseball umpire in town to work the series between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Tampa Bay Rays.

So the 34-year-old Tumpane reached for the woman even as she urged him to let her go.

''It was just pure instinct,'' Tumpane said . ''You hear kind of stories of this all the time, different scenarios, people aiding and situation where I was lucky enough to be there to help and try to think of everything I could do, hanging on to her. At times she wanted to go the other way. I was like, `not on my watch, please.' We were just hanging on.''

                          And saving a life.

Tumpane secured one of her arms. A bystander walked up and grabbed the other while another - Mike Weinman, an employee for the Rays - clutched her legs and pinned them to the railing while Tumpane mouthed to someone in the crowd to call 911.

What followed were chaotic moments of panic, fear and ultimately, grace.

''I couldn't tell you how long we were waiting for everyone else to get in place,'' Tumpane said. `Obviously another power comes into be when you're hanging on and you know what the alternative is of you letting go and not having other people to help you.''

Tumpane, Weinman and the third volunteer clung to the unidentified woman until emergency responders arrived. A police boat raced up the river to the iconic yellow bridge named for the Pirates Hall of Famer who died on Dec. 31, 1972, when a plane making humanitarian deliveries to earthquake victims in Nicaragua crashed. Now, 45 years later a crowd thrust together by fate brought a complete stranger back from the brink. Together.

''Once they were able to secure her, we were able to talk her back to help us out and we got her back on this side,'' Tumpane said. ''After that I went up to her, she said, `You'll just forget me after this' and I said, `No, I'll never forget you.' This was an unbelievable day and I'm glad to say she can have another day with us and I'm glad I was in the right place at the right time.''

Tumpane, who grew up in the Chicago suburbs, got into umpiring as a teenager, made his major-league debut in 2012 and received his full-time MLB commission in 2016, stressed he's no hero.

''I just happened to be there,'' he said. ''I think I've been a caring person in my life. I saw somebody in need, and it looked like a situation to obviously insert myself and help out.''

The aftermath was a bit surreal. After the woman was taken away, Tumpane called his wife, his arms still shaking.

''Not too many times you call your wife and say you helped save somebody's life,'' he said. ''A really special moment.''

One that stayed with him even as he prepared to call balls and strikes behind home plate Wednesday night. During breaks in the action his eyes would drift to the bridge just a few hundred feet behind the center field wall at PNC Park.

''It's also hard when you stand back behind home plate and look and you see the bridge in the distance, In between innings and whatnot, just thinking of how things could have maybe been,'' he said. ''Glad it was this way.''

Tumpane has no experience in crisis management or suicide prevention. He's spent 16 years living the nomadic life of an umpire. Asked what was going through his head while he tried to coax the woman back to safety, Tumpane just shrugged his shoulders. How do you explain the unexplainable?

''I happened to be in the right spot at the right time,'' he said. ''Tried to be as comforting as I could and talk her through it. Thankfully that was the outcome.''

                          • Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……..

                            13) James Dolan owns the Knicks and he also owns Cablevision; he fired Phil Jackson and has to eat $24M in salary. Cable TV customers in NYC and Long Island can expect their cable bills to go a little bit higher fairly soon. Someone has to pay for Dolan’s incompetence.

Now the question is this: Will the Knicks buy out Carmelo Anthony’s contract and let him walk for nothing (Houston? Cleveland?)

                            12) Speaking of the Rockets, they traded Patrick Beverly, Lou Williams and Sam Dekker, plus a #1 draft pick to the Clippers for Chris Paul. Paul and James Harden both ranked in the top 7 in the NBA last year in time of possession with the ball, so someone (Harden) is going to have to adjust to having the ball less.

                            11) Quote of the Day, part 2: Washington Nationals stole seven bases against the Cubs Tuesday night; Chicago catcher Miguel Montero wasn’t happy about it. He said this:

“That’s the reason they were running left and right today, because they [pitcher Jake Arrieta] were slow to the plate,. Simple as that. It’s a shame it’s my fault because I didn’t throw anyone out.

“It really sucked, because the stolen bases go on me. But when you really look at it, the pitcher doesn’t give me any time, so yeah, ‘Miggy can’t throw anyone out,’ but my pitchers don’t hold anyone on.”

Montero was DFA’d Wednesday, which means he basically got cut, unless they can find a trade partner in the next 10 days.

                            10) UCLA guard Bryce Alford will be on Golden State’s summer league team next week in Las Vegas. Summer league is great if you like the NBA— you can meet lot of people there, because everyone comes/goes out the same doors. I had great fun on my visits to the summer league.

                            9) Colorado Rockies pitcher Jeff Hoffman is 3-0, 1.67 in four road starts, 1-1, 8.22 in three home starts at Coors Field. He is doing really well in his rookie season.

Mr Hoffman is from Colonie, NY (just outside Albany), went to Shaker HS, which is in north Colonie— I live in south Colonie. Sam Perkins, the former NBA star, also went to Shaker High before moving on to play ball at North Carolina.

                            8) In extra innings at AT&T Park in San Francisco, when the seagulls are hovering over the field waiting for the game to end so they can swoop down into the bleachers and get their dinner, what happens if a fly ball hits one of the seagulls? Is it a live ball?

I asked on Twitter and it turns out if a batted ball hits a seagull, it is a live ball, much as if the ball hit an umpire. Seagulls are a part of the field, it turns out.

                            7) Major league umpire John Tumpane umped the plate in the Rays-Pirates game last night, but he got a very important save hours before the game even started.

Tumpane saved a woman’s life Wednesday; the woman was going to jump off the Roberto Clemente Bridge in Pittsburgh, but Tumpane, on his way back to his hotel from lunch, noticed her and talked her out of jumping.

He spent several minutes with the woman, 911 was called and the woman was taken away in an ambulance. Hope things work out well for her.

                            6) There is a ballpark in the AA Texas League that has a swimming pool in right-center field, kind of like the Diamondbacks’ ballpark, except this pool is elevated— takes a longer poke to hit the ball in this pool than the pool in Phoenix.

                            5) Quote of the Day, part 3:

“I’d see a quarterback and be like, ‘Dude is garbage, and I’m over here in the kitchen cooking turkey necks!?’ I hate to name-drop, but [Ryan] Fitzpatrick is still playing!? He leads the league in interceptions, and he’s still (bleep)ing getting paid? I mean, what the (bleep) is going on?”
                            Former NFL QB Vince Young

                            4) Baseball transactions:
                            — Reds put Brandon Finnegan (shoulder) on the DL, activated Austin Brice
                            — Royals recalled LF Jorge Soler from AAA.
                            — Giants put 3B Conor Gillaspie, P Mark Melancon on the DL, brought up 3B Jae-Gyun Hwang and P Dan Slania
                            — New York put DH Matt Holliday on DL, recalled 3B Miguel Andujar
                            — Detroit activated DH Victor Martinez, sent John Hicks down to AAA.
                            — Arizona put Nick Ahmed (hand) on DL, brought Ketel Marte up from AAA
                            — Mets put P Robert Gsellman (hamstring) on DL, brought Matt Reynolds up from AAA.
                            — Atlanta activated P Bartolo Colon off the DL, sent Jason Hursh to AAA.

                            3) Happy birthday to a pair of legends this week: NASCAR’s Richard Petty turned 80 years old, and comic genius Mel Brooks turned 91.

                            2) Chicago Cubs currently have 15 players on their active roster age 27 or younger; nine of Cubs’ 10 players who are 28+ are pitchers.

                            1) Was surprised to hear that when Sean McVay interviewed for the Rams’ coaching job, in his very first interview with the team, he spent two hours watching film with QB Jared Goff. I’m pretty sure that is highly unusual, for a coaching candidate to spend that much time with a player BEFORE he has the job.

                              — Angels 3, Dodgers 2— Game ended when Dodgers’ catcher threw the ball into RF trying to throw batter out at first after a strikeout/wild pitch. Winning run scored from second.

                              — Giants 5, Colorado 3— Rockies have scored 23 runs, hit .206 during 8-game skid.

                              — Phillies 5, Mariners 4— Seattle’s bullpen blew lead in ninth inning.

                              — Nationals 8, Cubs 4— Chicago swung at 54 Strasburg pitches, missed 26 times.

                              — Diamondbacks’ SS Nick Ahmed broke a bone in his hand Tuesday night when he was hit on the hand with a pitch. Tough blow for a red-hot Arizona squad.

                              — Chase Anderson, Milwaukee’s best pitcher, strained his oblique while batting in the second inning last night. No bueno.
