    • Saturday's Diamond Notes
      June 24, 2017

Hottest team: Mariners (6-0 past six games, 18-8 past 26 overall)

The Mariners have been rolling right along, racking up six straight victories to get back above .500 and right back into the postseason conversation near the midway point of the season. The M's are also on the positive side with a plus-8 run differential, officially moving back into the black after a 13-3 thrashing of the first-place Astros on Friday. The Mariners are getting healthier, as veteran arms Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma are back to near full health and that's bad news for the rest of the American League West. Sam Gaviglio, one of the pleasant surprises when the Mariners staff was banged up, takes the ball against Lance McCullers Jr. on Saturday.

Coldest team: Tigers (0-7 past seven games, 3-12 past 15 overall)

In recent seasons, the Tigers have been involved in the postseason mix and had magic numbers. Now, the only magic number fans and talking heads are counting are how many more losses skipper Brad Ausmus can endure before he is relieved of his managerial duties. The Tigers were bested 1-0 against the Padres on the left coast, dropping their seventh in a row. The Motor City Kitties have been toothless on offense, averaging just 2.9 runs per game during their losing skid while allowing 5.7 runs per outing. The Tigers turn to Anibal Sanchez to break the losing skid as this rematch of the 1984 World Series continues.

Hottest pitcher: Jason Vargas, Royals (10-3, 2.27 ERA)

The Royals hand the ball to Jason Vargas for Saturday's matinee meeting with the Blue Jays. The southpaw is showing no signs of chinks in the armor, as he continues to show out on a regular basis. He ranks third in the majors in ERA at 2.27, almost two full runs better than his career average (4.05). He has been even better at home, going 5-1 with a 1.81 ERA over seven starts at Kauffman Stadium while holding the opposition to a .227 batting average. He is also 3-0 with a 1.82 ERA in four starts under the sunshine, too.

Coldest pitcher: Marco Estrada, Blue Jays (4-5, 4.98 ERA)

The Blue Jays hand the ball to Estrada looking to get back on track after a pounding in Texas on Thursday, and a bad beat Friday night at the hands of the Royals. It won't be easy, as they'll be facing the aforementioned Vargas. Estrada has been getting tuned up this season, allowing opponents to hit .276 against him. The Jays have managed four wins in the past five outings by Estrada on grass, but they just 3-7 over his past 10 starts with four days of rest. The Jays are also a dismal 4-12 over their past 16 outings against a left-handed starter.

Biggest UNDER run: Twins (5-1 past six games, 8-2 past 10 overall)

The Twins hit the 'under' for the third consecutive game in Friday's series opener, blanking the Tribe in Cleveland. Now, they'll turn to Kyle Gibson to try and duplicate that success in a tough matchup against Corey Kluber and the Indians. The 'under' is 4-1 in Minnesota's past five on the road, 5-1 in their past six divisional games and 13-4 over their past 17 on the road against teams with a winning record. However, the 'over' has been a frequent happening in starts by Kyle Gibson, going 17-5-2 over his past 24 outings overall. The under is also 3-0-1 in Cleveland's past four outings.

Biggest OVER run: Mets (5-0 past five games, 10-1 past 11 overall)

Neither the Mets nor the Giants are playing very good ball lately, and that has meant the 'over' cashing on a regular basis. The 'over' is a surprising 6-0 in Jacob deGrom's past six road outings, 3-0-1 in his past four against teams with a losing record and 14-6 over his past 20 starts with five days of rest. The over is also 33-13-6 in the past 52 by the Mets against a right-handed starter. The over is 4-0 in San Francisco's past four home games, 4-1-2 in the past seven vs. RHP and 8-1-2 in Johnny Cueto's past 11 home starts. It's a start contrast from past seasons when Cueto and deGrom were mostly untouchable.

Matchup to watch: Dodgers vs. Rockies

The Dodgers flexed a little muscle in Friday's series opener, showing the Rockies that they're still considered the class of the National League West. Colorado has won 13 of their past 19 games overall, but they're 1-4 in their past five road games. Now, they have to contend with Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers, who are on an eight-game winning streak. Los Angeles has won 41 of their past 51 when Kershaw toes the slab, and they're an impressive 43-14 in their past 57 games at home. L.A. has also followed up wins with more wins, going 21-5 in their past 26 following a victory. Even more impressive is the fact the Dodgers are 14-2 in Kershaw's past 16 home outings against Colorado and 23-5 in his past 28 assignments overall against the Rox. On the flip side, the Rockies are a dismal 1-6 in Tyler Chatwood's past seven tries against Dodger Blue.

Betcha didn’t know: Kershaw coughed up a career-high four home runs over 6 1/3 innings in Monday's outing against the Mets, although he and the team were able to come away with the win. He has given up a career-high 17 home runs already this season, but is still throwing gas with 115 strikeouts over just 103 1/3 innings. As mentioned above, the Rockies haven't done much against the three-time Cy Young Award winner. He has posted an impressive 20-6 mark with a 3.13 ERA in 35 career outings against Colorado.

Biggest public favorite: Dodgers (-250) vs. Rockies

Biggest public underdog: Tigers (+115) at Padres

Biggest line move: Astros (-125 to -150) at Mariners

CHICAGO (AP) Matt Olson hit his first two major league home runs, Jaycob Brugman and Franklin Barreto also launched their first career shots and the Oakland Athletics routed the Chicago White Sox 10-2 on Saturday.

Barreto homered in his big league debut. He joined Olson and Brugman in becoming the second trio of teammates to hit their first homers in the same game, the Elias Sports Bureau said. It also happened in 1914 with the Kansas City Packers of the Federal League - the rival circuit lasted a couple of seasons, and included many big leaguers.

Former White Sox ace Mark Buehrle had his No. 56 jersey retired in a pregame ceremony. After the 30-minute tribute ended, the A's roughed up James Shields (1-1).

Daniel Gossett (1-2) took advantage of an early 6-0 lead to win for the first time in three big league starts. He gave up two unearned runs in six innings.

White Sox manager Rick Renteria was ejected for the second straight game.

            ORIOLES 8, RAYS 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Dylan Bundy helped Baltimore avoid a dubious pitching record, throwing seven solid innings as the Orioles beat Tampa Bay.

The Orioles had given up at least five runs in 20 straight games, matching the major league mark set by the 1924 Philadelphia Phillies.

Bundy (8-6) allowed three runs and five hits in seven innings.

Jose Alvarado (0-3) walked the only batter he faced, Seth Smith, leading off the seventh. He was replaced by Jumbo Diaz, who gave up a two-run double to Mark Trumbo and Trey Mancini's two-run homer that put Baltimore ahead 7-3.

            NATIONALS 18, REDS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) - Michael Taylor homered twice among his four hits, Trea Turner went 5 for 5 and Washington romped.

Daniel Murphy had four RBIs for the Nationals. All of Turner's career-high five hits were singles including a pair of run-scoring hits.

Joe Ross (4-3) blanked the Reds until Patrick Kivlehan's pinch-hit home run in the sixth.

Homer Bailey (0-1) allowed eight runs and six hits with three walks in 1 2/3 innings in his season debut after shoulder surgery. Cincinnati has lost 13 of 14.

            RANGERS 8, YANKKES 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Austin Bibens-Dirkx pitched seven dazzling innings in his first shot at the New York Yankees after 12 seasons in the minors, and Carlos Gomez homered for Texas.

Robinson Chirinos also went deep and Elvis Andrus had a pair of run-scoring hits for the Rangers, who rebounded quickly from a difficult defeat that ended at 12:19 a.m.

Bibens-Dirkx (3-0), a 32-year-old rookie promoted to the majors last month for the first time, gave up Aaron Judge's major league-leading 26th home run in his fourth big league start.

Luis Cessa (0-2) struck out eight in five innings.

            ROYALS 3, BLUE JAYS 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jason Vargas became the first major league pitcher to reach 11 wins this season, pitching seven efficient innings to lead surging Kansas City over Toronto.

The Royals won for the 11th time in 13 games and moved over .500 for the first time this season at 37-36.

Vargas (11-3) allowed two runs on eight hits. Troy Tulowitzki and Pillar homered off him.

Kelvin Herrera pitched the ninth for his 18th save in 20 chances.

Alex Gordon hit a go-ahead triple in the seventh off Marco Estrada (4-6).

            TWINS 4, INDIANS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Brian Dozier hit a leadoff homer against closer Cody Allen to break an eighth-inning tie and Minnesota defeated Cleveland.

Dozier homered into the left field porch on a 3-2 pitch and narrowed Cleveland's lead over Minnesota in the AL Central to one-half game.

Cleveland's Corey Kluber struck out a season-high 13 and allowed three hits in seven innings.

Taylor Rogers (4-1) got the win and Brandon Kintzler pitched the ninth for his 20th save. Francisco Lindor doubled with two outs, but center fielder Byron Buxton made a diving catch of Jason Kipnis' liner to end the game.

Allen (0-3) was making his first appearance since Sunday. He was on the paternity list when his wife gave birth to the couple's first child.

            BRAVES 3, BREWERS 1

ATLANTA (AP) - Brandon Phillips homered for the third straight game, R.A. Dickey threw seven strong innings and Atlanta beat Milwaukee.

The Braves have won four straight and nine of 12.

Dickey (6-5) allowed one run in seven innings to improve to 5-1 at SunTrust Park. Jim Johnson got his 15th save, stopping the NL Central leaders in the ninth.

Phillips homered off Matt Garza (3-4).

            CUBS 5, MARLINS 3

MIAMI (AP) - Jon Lester gave up a three-run homer to J.T. Realmuto in the first inning and then settled down to help the Chicago Cubs beat Miami.

Lester (5-4) went seven innings, retiring 13 in a row after Realmuto's seventh homer of the year. Wade Davis completed the four-hitter with a 1-2-3 ninth for his 15th save.

The Cubs took the lead for good in the sixth against Nick Wittgren (1-1).

            METS 5, GIANTS 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Jacob deGrom pitched eight strong innings and Wilmer Flores homered as the New York Mets defeated San Francisco.

DeGrom (7-3) struck out seven and allowed one run while scattering four hits.

The Giants, who are on pace to lose more than 100 games for the first time since arriving on the West Coast, have dropped 11 of 12. Sam Dyson (0-1) took the loss.

            PIRATES 7, CARDINALS 3

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jordy Mercer and Josh Harrison homered and starter Gerrit Cole pitched six innings, lifting Pittsburgh over St. Louis.

Cole (6-6) extended his winning streak to three games, allowing five hits and one run with five strikeouts and two walks.

Lance Lynn (5-5) struggled for the second consecutive start.

            ANGELS 6, RED SOX 3

BOSTON (AP) - JC Ramirez rebounded from his shortest career start with six solid innings, Cameron Maybin doubled home a run and scored another and the Los Angeles Angels held off the Boston Red Sox.

Ramirez (7-5) allowed one run and four hits with five strikeouts after lasting just three innings and giving up five runs in his previous start. Blake Parker struck out pinch-hitter Chris Young with the bases loaded for the final out for his first save of the season after Boston scored twice in the ninth.

David Price (2-2) allowed three runs - two earned - with five strikeouts and a walk in six innings. Mitch Moreland hit a solo homer for the Red Sox, who lost for only the third time in their last 13 home games.

Red Sox manager John Farrell was ejected by third-base umpire and crew chief Bill Miller after Fernando Abad was called for a balk, scoring a run that made it 5-1 in the seventh.

Over/under win totals for college football this season

              — Illinois 3.5, under -$120

              — Indiana 6.5, over -$120

              — Iowa 7, over -$120

              — Iowa State 5.5, under -$130

              — Kansas 2.5, under -$130

              ****************************

              Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday………

              13) A’s 10, White Sox 2— Oakland had three players hit their first MLB home run in this game, the first team to do that since 1914- the Kansas City Packers.

White Sox manager Rich Renteria got tossed for the second day in a row; he’s not thrilled with the Jim Wolf/GregGibson umpiring crew.

              12) Franklin Barreto is a highly-touted shortstop prospect for the A’s; he played 2B in his big league debut— he didn’t get to Chicago until Saturday morning, but homered in his first MLB game, which started at 1:30 in the Windy City. Quite a day for the young man.

              11) Its been a decade since the San Francisco Giants had only one player in the All-Star Game; looks like thats going to be the case this season.

              10) Jordan Spieth leads the Hartford Open after three rounds; last seven times he held the 54-hole lead, he won the tournament six times— he T2 at the 2016 Masters.

              9) Canyon Barry (Rick’s son) is playing with the Knicks’ team in the Orlando summer league, but New York doesn’t have a team in Las Vegas this summer— will the Knicks sign him or will he play for someone else in Las Vegas?

Canyon Barry studied nuclear engineering in college, so NBA offenses should be a snap.

              8) If I’m keeping a scorebook at a ball game nowadays, I score where the ball went, and take notes on who actually fielded the ball. If a ball is hit to shortstop but is fielded by the 3B, that is misleading, so I would put 6-3 down (noting it was hit to where the SS normally is) then note it was the 3B who actually fielded the ball.

              7) Baseball transactions:
              — Arizona sent OF Jeremy Hazelbaker to AAA.
              — Tampa Bay activated C Wilson Ramos, DFA’d Derek Norris
              — Bronx DFA’d 1B Chris Carter, brought up 1B Tyler Austin.
              — Texas put P Martin Perez (thumb) on the DL.
              — Astros sent P Joe Musgrove down to AAA, activated Lance McCullers.
              — Giants DFA’d 3B Aaron Hill, brought up rookie 3B Ryder Jones.

              6) Dodger reliever Pedro Baez drew a 4-pitch walk with the bases loaded Thursday night, first pitcher to do that since the Cubs’ Courtney Duncan on May 5, 2001.

              5) Dodgers’ SS Corey Seager got a Grade 1 hamstring strain Friday, isn’t supposed to go on the DL— like the rest of us, he is day-to-day.

              4) I’m skeptical of the pitch speeds radar guns give out in stadiums; those guns can be calibrated to be “hot” or “cold” and can give inaccurate readings.

For instance, when I got my speeding ticket, the gun was “hot” and therefore inaccurate.

              3) Orioles 8, Rays 3— First time since June 2 that Baltimore held a team under five runs.

              2) Mets 5, Giants 2— San Francisco is 27-50; last year, they lost their 50th game on August 12.

Jason deGrom is the first Mets’ pitcher since Johan Santana in 2010 to finish eight innings in three consecutive starts.

              1) Mark Leiter Jr got his first big league win against the Diamondbacks Friday. Arizona is managed by Torey Lovullo.

Lovullo was once traded for Mark Leiter Sr on March 19, 1991, six days after Mark Jr was born.

              • MLB notebook: Jays' Osuna battles anxiety problem
                June 24, 2017

Toronto Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna said Saturday that he is dealing with an anxiety issue, feeling "a little bit lost right now."

Osuna told reporters he is unsure when he will be available to pitch again as he tries to work through his issues. He did not pitch in a save situation for the Blue Jays on Friday night against the Kansas City Royals.

"This has nothing to do with me being on the field," he said. "I feel great out there. It's just when I'm out of baseball, when I'm not on the field, that I feel just weird and a little bit lost."

The 22-year-old has 19 saves and a 2.48 ERA in 31 appearances this season.

--The Texas Rangers placed left-hander Martin Perez on the 10-day disabled list with a fracture and laceration at the tip of his right thumb.

Perez sustained the injury when he caught his thumb in the hinge section of a hotel room door on Thursday night in New York. He tore the nail off his thumb and a team trainer took him to a hospital, where the nail was reattached and X-rays showed a small fracture. The DL move is retroactive to Friday.

Perez, 26, is 4-6 with a 4.70 ERA in 15 starts with the Rangers this season. The Rangers recalled infielder/outfielder Drew Robinson from Triple-A Round Rock to take the roster spot. He was in uniform for Saturday's game against the New York Yankees.

--The Oakland Athletics placed infielder Chad Pinder on the 10-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain after he was removed from Friday night's game against the Chicago White Sox in the sixth inning because of the injury.

Pinder, 25, has started 39 games for the A's this season at five different positions. He hit safely in six of his last eight games, going 9-for-31 (.290). For the season, Pinder is hitting .234 with nine home runs and 25 RBIs in 47 games.

The A's also recalled infielder Franklin Barreto from Triple-A Nashville to take the roster spot. His first appearance with Oakland will mark his major league debut.

                • LEADING OFF: Old-Timers' Day at Yankee Stadium, Barreto pop
                  June 24, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Sunday:

                  WELCOME BACK

Old-Timers' Day is always a popular event at Yankee Stadium, and former catcher Jorge Posada figures to draw a lot of attention when he attends for the first time. Tim Raines, set for induction at the Hall of Fame next month, will be recognized during a special ceremony. The 71st edition will take place before New York hosts Texas.

                  THREE IN A ROW?

White Sox manager Rick Renteria has been ejected two straight games this weekend. He was tossed Friday night vs. the A's for arguing about a foul ball, then got the heave-ho Saturday when he threw his hat and joined third baseman Todd Frazier's dispute about a replay review.

                  FOUR IN A ROW?

Brandon Phillips has homered in three straight games for the Braves. The streak comes after he delivered game-winning hits in back-to-back games last week. The 35-year-old who grew up in the Atlanta metro area is hitting .306 with seven home runs.

                  ENCORE!

Franklin Barreto was a smash in his big league debut, hitting a two-run homer and a single Saturday as the Athletics beat the White Sox. The 21-year-old infielder is a top prospect in the Oakland organization, and was promoted from Triple-A after shortstop Chad Pinder injured his hamstring Friday night and was put on the 10-day disabled list.

                  FINDING HIS WAY

Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna says he is out of sorts mentally and feeling ''anxious.'' The 22-year-old is getting a little break from pitching right now.

''I really don't know how to explain it,'' Osuna said through a translator.

''This has nothing to do with me being on the field,'' he said. ''I feel great out there. It's just when I'm not on the field that I feel weird and a little bit lost. I wish I knew how to get out of this. We're working on it. We're trying to find ways to make me feel better. But, to be honest, I just don't know.''
