  • LEADING OFF: Yankees' skid at 7, Scherzer rides K streak
    June 20, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Wednesday:

    HITTING THE SKIDS

Despite another home run by Aaron Judge, who leads the majors with 24, the Yankees lost their seventh straight game Tuesday night - their longest slide in a single season since April 2007. A week ago, New York led the AL East by four games after winning the opener of a West Coast trip. But even with the return of closer Aroldis Chapman from the disabled list, the Yankees have dropped out of first place for the first time since mid-May. Rookie left-hander Jordan Montgomery (4-4, 3.78 ERA) attempts to stop the skid against Ricky Nolasco (2-8, 5.01) and the Angels. Nolasco is winless in nine starts since April 27, losing his last six.

    MAD MAX

Nationals ace Max Scherzer (8-4, 2.26) tries to extend his career-best streak of double-digit strikeout games to six when he faces Giancarlo Stanton, Marcell Ozuna and the Marlins. ''It's a cool accomplishment. That's not easy to do,'' Scherzer said after his most recent outing against the Mets. ''Your pitches have to be sharp every single time out.'' The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner leads the league in ERA and strikeouts (134). He has won four of his last five starts. ''You cannot let him get the lead,'' Mets manager Terry Collins said. ''You watch his demeanor on the mound. When he starts walking around with that big, long pace that he's got, he's locked in.''

    GETTING CLOSER

Rangers lefty Cole Hamels makes his second rehab start with Double-A Frisco, against Midland. Hamels has been out since early May with a strained muscle on his right side but could rejoin the Texas rotation next week in Cleveland. He threw three scoreless innings last Friday for Frisco. Hamels is 2-0 with a 3.03 ERA over five starts in his third season with the Rangers. He got hurt while warming up before his scheduled start May 2 at Houston.

    IMPERFECT 10

Giants right-hander Jeff Samardzija (2-9, 4.81 ERA) hopes to avoid becoming the first big league pitcher with 10 losses this season when he starts in Atlanta against Matt Kemp and the Braves. Samardzija is tied for most losses in the majors with Boston right-hander Rick Porcello, last year's AL Cy Young Award winner.

    ROCK SOLID

Jeff Hoffman (4-0, 2.25) can extend a dominant stretch to begin the season when the Rockies continue a surprisingly meaningful NL West series against the Diamondbacks. Hoffman, a rookie right-hander acquired from Toronto in a trade for Troy Tulowitzki in 2015, gave up seven runs in his lone appearance against Arizona last season, but he's been a different pitcher this year for contending Colorado. He'll face right-hander Taijuan Walker (5-3, 3.32), who has allowed one run in 11 innings over his past two starts.

    PAX PANIC?

Mariners left-hander James Paxton hasn't been the same since a left forearm strain landed him on the disabled list, and he'll try to get right in a start against Justin Verlander and the Tigers. Paxton (5-2, 3.23) had a 1.43 ERA through six starts before going on the DL, but he's given up 14 earned runs in 18 innings over four starts since. Paxton's fastball averaged just under 95 mph in his last start, down nearly 3 mph from opening day. Verlander (4-4, 4.50) hasn't won since May 20, but did throw seven innings of two-run ball against Tampa Bay last time out.

    • Umpire Joe West works 5,000th game
      June 20, 2017

DENVER (AP) Umpire Joe West worked his 5,000th regular season game Tuesday night at Coors Field, and he vividly remembers his first more than 40 years ago.

''It was in Atlanta's Fulton County Stadium and Bob Watson hit this long fly ball down the left field line, and at the last second I called it foul and I was praying, `I hope I'm right,''' he said before Tuesday's game. ''I remember all those things.''

West was behind the plate for a matchup between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies for his milestone game. The 64-year-old, nicknamed ''Cowboy'' Joe, is the third umpire to work at least 5,000 games, joining Hall of Famer Bill Klem (5,375) and Bruce Froemming (5,163).

West arrived at Coors Field with his brother, John. He got a congratulatory pat at home plate from his crew just before the game started and then called a strike on Gregor Blanco to start a key NL West matchup.

The milestone was recognized with a short video in the middle of the fifth inning, and West waved to the fans who cheered him.

West made his major league debut as a 23-year-old on Sept. 14, 1976, in a game between the Braves and Houston Astros. He joined the NL staff full time in 1978. His 40 seasons umpiring in the majors are the most by any umpire, but he will need to keep working for a few more years to umpire the most games.

''I've been here more years, but you've got to realize when Bill Klem worked, they didn't have a week off at a time, he didn't go to replay and he didn't have those luxuries that the smart union chief has gotten for the umpires now,'' West said.

West has also worked two All-Star Games, 123 postseason games and six World Series, including 2016.

He was on the crew during the historic 2004 AL Championship Series when the Boston Red Sox rallied to beat the New York Yankees after losing the first three games of the series. Among the most memorable plays was during Game 6, when New York's Alex Rodriguez slapped the ball out of Bronson Arroyo's glove as the pitcher tried to tag him on the first base line.

      The umpires called Rodriguez out.

''When we called it, we knew we were right and we knew we'd get killed,'' West said. ''The crazy thing was the next day when we walked out to work the game, they gave us a standing ovation. It wasn't a happy standing ovation because the Yankees lost, but they respected what we did.''

West also has a rich history with both of Tuesday's managers. He was friends with the father of Arizona skipper Torey Lovullo.

''Joe popped up in my dad's life from time to time,'' Lovullo said. ''Probably the most touching thing was he came to my dad's funeral arrangement in Nashville. Joe got up and spoke about my father in a very endearing way that I will never forget.''

Colorado's Bud Black said his first ejection as a manager was by West when he was a rookie manager with San Diego 10 years ago. West changed a home run by Padres catcher Josh Bard to a ground-rule double, and Black didn't agree with the call.

''Josh Bard charged out of the dugout in full equipment, went out to second base, to the umpires,'' Black said. ''So I followed him out there. And then from there, without getting overly verbal, I was ejected.''

West remembered the game after some reflection.

''He followed me around the infield until I kicked him out,'' West said. ''He wanted me to kick him out.''

West has worked multiple no-hitters and witnessed the 400th career home run of Albert Pujols and Willie McCovey's 500th homer. He said the best games are the ones without controversy.

''I had Nolan Ryan's fifth no-hitter at first base and I had Clay Buchholz's first no-hitter. You look back on all those things and you're a piece of history every day,'' he said. ''I always like it when we come off the field and we didn't leave a missed play out there.''

      • Judge invited to All-Star Home Derby
        June 20, 2017

NEW YORK (AP) Yankees rookie sensation Aaron Judge has been invited to participate in next month's Home Run Derby.

Judge said Tuesday that he received the invitation last week through his agent but had not yet decided whether to accept.

The 25-year-old outfielder, a towering presence at 6-foot-7, tops the major leagues with 24 home runs after connecting Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Angels. He is second in the American League with a .333 batting average and 54 RBIs.

''I'm going to think about it for a while,'' Judge said. ''Just haven't honestly thought about. I'm more focused on what I can do for the team right now, and we'll see what I decide to do.''

The derby will be held at Marlins Park in Miami on July 10. Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton is the defending champion after winning last year at San Diego's Petco Park.

Judge hit the longest home run of the season, at 495 feet. Growing up, he had thought about what it would be like to swing in the slugger smash-athon.

''Never really dreamed that it would actually happen. It was pretty surreal,'' he said.

New York manager Joe Girardi said he isn't worried about Judge picking up bad habits in his swing because of the repeated exertions in the derby and extra batting practice before the event.

''I watch him take BP, and he uses the whole field. So he'll do the same thing,'' Girardi said. ''Players, you want them to go enjoy the All-Star Game because it's something they've earned. But you do worry about fatigue for those guys because they've got to travel. The good thing is we have a Sunday day game here. It'll be easy to get down there. So it shouldn't be too bad.''

Judge leads AL with 2.6 million votes in fan balloting for starters for the All-Star Game, to be played July 11. Only Washington outfielder Bryce Harper, who tops the National League at 2.8 million, has more.

Judge homered in his first big league plate appearance last Aug. 13. He has hit 11 home runs to the opposite field in right this year, four to center and nine to left, according to Fangraphs.

ESPN, which televises the derby, hopes Judge agrees to join.

''Fans would truly anticipate and enjoy having Aaron Judge, one of the game's top young stars, take part in this great annual baseball showcase,'' network spokesman Josh Krulewitz said.

        • Phillies making moves
          June 20, 2017

The Philadelphia Phillies may have the worst record in the major leagues, but they are still making moves.

In a somewhat surprising transaction, the Phillies designated right-handed pitcher Jeanmar Gomez and outfielder Michael Saunders for assignment.

They called up left-hander Hoby Milner and outfielder Cameron Perkins from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take their place on the roster.

Gomez was the team's closer last season, when he recorded 37 saves, and is making $4.2 million this season. Gomez lost his closer's job early this season and has a 7.25 ERA in 18 appearances in 2017.

Saunders was selected to the 2016 All-Star Game while playing for the Toronto Blue Jays. He was batting .298 with 16 homers at the break last season, although his numbers declined in the second half and he finished the season batting .253 with 24 homers.

Signed as a free agent by the Phillies in the offseason, Saunders is making $9 million, but is hitting just .205 with six homers. He has four hits in his last 40 at-bats.

It suggests the Phillies are ridding themselves of veterans in an attempt to rebuild.

Hoby was 1-2 with a 2.60 ERA for Lehigh Valley this season, while Perkins was hitting .298 with six homers.

The Phillies also placed Jerad Eickhoff on the 10-day disabled list with an upper back strain.

Eickhoff, 26, went 11-14 with a 3.65 ERA last season, but he is 0-7 with a 4.81 ERA this year.

The Phillies have not yet decided how they will fill Eickhoff's spot in the rotation.

To replace Eickhoff on the roster, the Phillies called up first baseman Brock Stassi from Lehigh Valley. Stassi hit just .197 in an earlier stint with the Phillies this season.

                    • Wednesday's Diamond Notes
                      June 21, 2017

Hottest team: Rockies (6-0 past seven games, 13-3 past 16 overall)

The Rockies opened their key National League West battle with the Diamondbacks with a narrow 4-3 in behind German Marquez, winning for the sixth consecutive game to take over the perch in the division. The Colorado pitching staff has allowed a total of just nine runs over the past three games, all at Coors Field, which is a feat in and of itself. The Rockies have won seven in a row at Coors Field, 13 of their past 16 overall and they're 20-8 in their past 28 games against right-handed starting pitching. They're also an impressive 5-0 in Jeff Hoffman's past five outings. The Diamondbacks have won six of Taijuan Walker's past eight starts, and four of his past five against divisional foes, so it should be a good battle.

Coldest team: Phillies (0-4 past four games, 1-12 past 13 overall)

The Phillies have dropped four in a row, but two of the losses came by one run and yesterday's loss was decided in the 11th inning. If things break slightly differently, the Phillies could be playing .500 ball or better during the past 13 games, but instead their 1-12. Six of the losses during the span are of the one-run variety. They'll try to get things right against the Cardinals on Wednesday, but it won't be easy. The Cardinals have won 20 of Michael Wacha's past 28 starts against teams with a losing overall record. The Phillies, on the other hand, are just 15-43 in their past 58 vs. RHP while winning just two of their past 10 home outings against righties.

Hottest pitcher: Max Scherzer, Nationals (8-4, 2.26 ERA)

Scherzer takes the ball in the first game of the day at 12:10 p.m. ET in Miami, looking for his fourth consecutive victory on the road. He has been on fire all season away from the nation's capital, going 6-1 with a 1.84 ERA over 58 2/3 innings acrosss eight starts while holding the opposition to an amazing .155 batting average. His 0.84 WHIP leads the league, and he also has managed 134 strikeouts over 99 2/3 innings in 14 starts overall. It will be his first start of the season against the Marlins, a team he is 6-2 with a 3.86 ERA against in nine outings since the start of the 2014 season.

Coldest pitcher: Kevin Gausman, Orioles (3-6, 6.60 ERA)

Gausman takes the ball looking to get on track with a win against the Indians, but it won't be easy. Cleveland has won six of their past seven outings, and they're 5-1 in their past six home games while going 7-1 in Carlos Carrasco's past eight assignments. Gausman has fallen off big time, allowing 55 earned runs over just 75 innings with an unsightly 1.92 WHIP and .338 opponent batting average. The reason for his struggles has been multi-fold, but his inability to keep the ball in the park and his frequent issuing of free passes are the two biggest reasons. The Orioles have won just four of thier past 13 games overall, and they're 1-7 in their past eight against teams with a winning overall mark.

Biggest UNDER run: Indians (19-7-3 past 29 road games overall)

The Indians has been hard on the opposition, especially when on the road or when Carrasco is on the hill. The Tribe has posted a 19-7-3 'under' mark in 29 road games overall while going 11-3 over Carrasco's past 14 outings. They're also 13-4 over the past 17 road starts by Carrasco. The under will be difficult against an Orioles team cashing the over on a regular basis lately. The over is 7-0-1 in Baltimore's past eight home games, 13-2-1 in their past 16 against a right-handed starter and 6-0-1 in Gausman's past seven home starts. The total was a push in Tuesday's battle, and the under is 3-1-1 in the past five meetings, while going 7-1-1 in the past nine meetings at Camden Yards.

Biggest OVER run: Reds (4-0 past four games, 10-3-1 past 14 overall)

The young Reds pitching staff has been very giving lately, allowing 27 runs over the past four outings. It's no surprise the 'over' has hit in each of those four contests. The over is 6-1-1 in the past eight road games for Cincinnati while going 4-1 in their past five vs. RHP. The over is also 22-8 in their past 30 against teams with a winning record while going 5-2 in Tim Adleman's past seven tries against a team with a winning overall mark. They're playing a perfect opponent, as Tampa has had the total hit the over very frequently in recent weeks. The over is 16-5-1 in the past 22 games, 7-0 in their past seven at home and 5-1 in Erasmo Ramirez's past six home outings.

Matchup to watch: Mariners vs. Tigers

The Mariners will look to continue hurting the Tigers, while Detroit looks for their first win of the series. Seattle has won three in a row, doing it with some pitching and timely hitting. They're average 6.2 runs per game over the nine past outings while yielding just 3.0 runs per game over their past six outings at Safeco Field. That's a recipe for success. Justin Verlander is on the bump trying to get the Tigers pointed back in the right direction again, although Detroit is 0-4 over his past four assignments on the road. The Tigers have also managed just one victory over their past five tries against a left-handed starter on the road. That includes a loss Tuesday against LHP Ariel Miranda and the M's.

Betcha didn’t know: The Mets will recall Tyler Pill from Triple-A Las Vegas to start Wednesday's game, as they needed a Rafael Montero to work in relief on Monday after Zack Wheeler struggled early. Pill has been up with the big club before, working a scoreless frame out of the bullpen in Atlanta on June 10, and he has an 0-2 record with a 3.75 ERA overall for the big club. At Vegas he has a 4-1 record with a 2.04 ERA in eight starts. He'll be up against a tough customer, as Rich Hill has posted a 3-1 record with a 2.83 ERA in six starts this season at Chavez Ravine.

Biggest public favorite: Twins (-200) vs. White Sox

Biggest public underdog: Tigers (+135) at Mariners

Biggest line move: Twins (-170 to -200) vs. White Sox

                        • Thursday’s six-pack

                          — Indians 5, Orioles 1— Carrasco tossed six shutout innings for the Tribe.

                          — Toronto 7, Texas 5— Blue Jays scored six runs in the first inning.

                          — Los Angeles Dodgers have 28 home runs in their last 11 games.

                          — Twins 4, White Sox 2— Berrios is 7-1, 2.67 for Minnesota.

                          — Cardinals 7, Phillies 6 (10)- -Philly led 5-1 in sixth inning.

                          — New Orleans Pelicans traded G Tim Frazier to the Washington Wizards for the No. 52 pick in tonight’s NBA Draft.

                          *************************

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

                          13) Miami 2, Washington 1— Nationals are way ahead in a weak NL East, but this was a tough loss. Max Scherzer had a no-hitter in the 8th inning, but gave up an infield hit that bounced off his glove, then Trea Turner bounced a throw to 1B for an error that kept the inning alive, before a wild pitch tied the game 1-1.

Giancarlo Stanton hit Scherzer’s 119th pitch for a single to left that drove in the winning run.

Scherzer and Nolan Ryan are now only two pitchers in history to go 8 IP, not give up an earned run, give up two or less hits, strike out at least 11 and lose the game.

Game ended when Adam Lind was called out on strikes on a pitch that was a good six inches outside. Home plate ump Dana Demuth should be fined for that— I could care less who won the game, but to end the game on a pitch that bad was disgraceful.

                          12) Odd news note #1 of the day: Police in Winfield, WV say a man found asleep in a stranger’s home has been charged with burglary.

A homeowner called police dispatchers after finding a glass door broken in his house and a stranger asleep in his bed. The napping trespasser was charged with burglary and destruction of property.

                          11) Surprising stat: Angels are 11-10 since Mike Trout got hurt; Braves are 16-17 since Freddie Freeman got hurt. Would’ve thought both teams would’ve done much worse.

                          10) Matt Adams has been so productive for the Braves that when Freeman comes back from his wrist injury, he may give third base a try, to keep both bats in the lineup.

                          9) Justin Verlander apparently thinks Major League Baseball has changed the actual baseball that is used in games- he says since the 2015 All-Star break, baseballs used are harder and also the seams are different, which has resulted in batted balls traveling farther.

As soon as I typed this sentence, Ian Happ hit a home run at Wrigley. Maybe Verlander is right.

                          8) Odd news note #2 of the day: A couple has gotten back nearly $100,000 they mistakenly donated to Goodwill Industries in Ohio.

Two Goodwill employees in Zanesville, OH initially thought it was play money or counterfeit cash after finding $97,000 in hundred dollar bills in a duffel bag inside a box of clothes last week. The duffel bag also contained legal documents and the last will and testament for the couple. Oy.

                          7) Best cumulative scores at the Hartford Open the last five years: Bubba Watson -52, Marc Leishman -43, Chris Stroud -41, Charley Hoffman -35. Ryan Moore -32

                          6) When Dwight Howard plays for the Charlotte Hornets this fall, they’ll be his 5th team in the last seven years.

                          5) Quote of the Day, part 2, from Browns’ QB Brock Osweiler:

“The best part is I’m getting coached hard on my fundamentals. And I believe firmly that when your fundamentals and your feet are right as a quarterback, you’re going to make great decisions and you’re going to throw accurate footballs.

I think that’s something that slid last season. I’m not going to go into great detail on that, but they did. My fundamentals slid, and because of that, you saw some poor decisions and some poor throws. If you go back to 2015, I feel like my fundamentals were pretty tight.”

Coaches in Houston, Osweiler’s last stop, should just love that quote.

                          4) San Diego Padres CF Franchy Cordero found out the hard way yesterday that there is a brick wall underneath all that ivy on the outfield fences at Wrigley Field. He caught the ball on the warning track, then got a face full of ivy and ran into that brick wall that has zero give to it. Terrific catch.

Wind must’ve been blowing in, since Contreras did a bat flip when hit the ball, thinking it would wind up in the bleachers.

                          3) Golf Channel and NBC Sports will show every shot of the British Open, which means you have to get up pretty darn early if you want to watch it all.

Couple years ago, I was in Las Vegas during the British Open; they had the start of the golf on at one of the bars, while at the same time, the Diamondbacks’ game was in the 13th inning, so I was watching Wednesday night baseball and Thursday morning golf at the same time. Muy bueno.

                          2) Quote of the Day, part 3, from Kansas’ Josh Jackson, who declined to work out for the Celtics after they traded down into the #3 slot:

“They did a little bit of moving around with their pick. I felt like they made it pretty clear who they were going to draft with the No. 1 pick, so I didn’t really feel like it was worth either of our times for me to work out with them. But then when they, you know, did the flip and went to No. 3, by then it was too late.”

                          1) Mike Krzyzewski came out again in favor of high school players being eligible for the NBA Draft; the baseball rule makes sense— here is who is eligible for the baseball draft:

•- High school players, if they have graduated from high school and have not yet attended college or junior college.

•- College players, from four-year colleges who have either completed their junior or senior years or are at least 21 years old. (So college players play three years before they can be drafted)

•- Junior college players, regardless of how many years of school they have completed

                          • LEADING OFF: NL West showdown at Coors, M's Moore debuts
                            June 21, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Thursday:

                            WEST WINGS

The high-flying Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado wrap up their three-game series at Coors Field with a matchup of talented right-handers. Antonio Senzatela, a 22-year-old rookie, is 9-2 with a 4.10 ERA for the Rockies while Zack Godley is 2-1 with a 2.34 ERA. The NL West rivals have two of the best four records in the majors.

                            WELCOME

Seattle pitching prospect Andrew Moore is set to make his major league debut, facing Miguel Cabrera and the Tigers at Safeco Field. The 23-year-old righty was called up this week from Triple-A Tacoma, where he was 3-1 with a 3.19 ERA. A second-round draft pick from Oregon State, Moore began this year at Double-A Arkansas.

                            LOOSENING UP

Atlanta star first baseman Freddie Freeman says he's ''100 percent'' ready to try playing third base, a move that would let the Braves keep Matt Adams' bat in the lineup. Freeman has been out since May 17 with a broken left wrist and hopes to return July 14. He took grounders at third base before batting practice Wednesday and made throws across the diamond. Adams was acquired from St. Louis after Freeman got hurt and has provided pop, but is limited defensively beyond first base.

                            HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Marlins Spanish-language announcer Rafael ''Felo'' Ramirez is back in Miami following a lengthy hospital stay in Philadelphia after he fell stepping off the team bus. Ramirez, who has called games since the team's inaugural 1993 season, turns 94.
