WASHINGTON (AP) Stephen Strasburg struck out a career-high 15 while allowing three hits over seven innings to lead the Washington Nationals over the Padres 3-0 on Saturday.

Strasburg (6-1) singled and scored Washington's first run on Bryce Harper's third-inning grounder, and Michael A. Taylor hit a two-run homer for the second consecutive game. Matt Albers and Koda Glover provided hitless relief, with Glover getting his fifth save.

Clayton Richard (3-6) gave up three runs and 10 hits in six innings.

        ANGELS 5, MARLINS 2

MIAMI (AP) - Mike Trout hit his major league-leading 16th homer, a first-inning drive into the left field beer garden estimated at 443 feet.

J.C. Ramirez (5-3) limited Miami to an unearned run in seven innings.

Cameron Maybin put Los Angeles ahead to stay in the third when he tripled and scored on Andrelton Simmons' groundout. Maybin also singled, stole two bases and scored three times.

Vance Worley (0-2) allowed two runs and two hits in five innings.

        RED SOX 6, MARINERS 0

BOSTON (AP) - Brian Johnson (2-0) pitched a five-hitter, struck out eight and walked none in his first big league appearance at Fenway Park, and Boston stretched its winning streak to a season-high six games. He became the first Red Sox pitcher to throw a shutout in his first Fenway start since Pedro Martinez on April 11, 1998.

Xander Bogaerts' RBI single triggered a three-run first inning and Bradley hit a two-run homer in the sixth

Rob Whalen (0-1) gave up five runs and seven hits over 5 1/3 innings in debut for Seattle, which has lost seven of eight.

        YANKEES 3, ATHLETICS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Rookie Jharel Cotton (3-5), brought up before the game, held the Yankees hitless until Matt Holliday's tiebreaking, two-run homer with two outs in the sixth. New York won with only two hits - the first time the Yankees have done that with so few at home since 1988.

Sabathia (5-2) gave up two runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings, struck out nine and walked three. He has won three straight starts for the first time since 2013.

Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge was in the right spot for a pair of key catches to boost the AL East leaders, who won with just two hits.

Dellin Betances escaped a second-and-third, one-out jam in the eighth, an inning that included the ejections of A's hitter Jed Lowrie and manager Bob Melvin for arguing strike three calls, and closed for his fifth save.

        BLUE JAYS 3, RANGERS 1

TORONTO (AP) - Jose Bautista hit a three-run homer in the fifth off Yu Darvish (5-3) and Toronto matched its longest winning streak this season at five.

Shin-soo Choo homered on the first pitch of the game from Marco Estrada (4-2), who allowed four hits in six innings. Roberto Osuna threw a perfect ninth for his ninth save, completing a six-hitter.

        WHITE SOX 3, TIGERS 0

        TIGERS 4, WHITE SOX 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Buck Farmer (1-0) struck out a career-high 11 and allowed three hits in 6 1/3 innings of a doubleheader nightcap, getting his first big league win after going 0-6 with a 6.84 ERA in 32 games since his debut in 2014.

Yolmer Sanchez hit a two-run triple with one out in the ninth off Justin Wilson, who struck out Todd Frazier and rookie Adam Engel.

John Hicks and Victor Martinez homered for Detroit. Derek Holland (4-4) allowed seven hits and four walks in six innings.

Tyler Danish (1-0) worked around six walks in the opener while allowing three hits over five innings for his first major league win, and David Robertson finished the four-hitter for his sixth save in seven chances. Michael Fulmer (5-3) allowed nine hits in his first complete game this season.

Tim Anderson scored on a double play in the fifth, and Leury Garcia hit an RBI triple in the eighth and scored on Jose Abreu's single.

        TWINS 5, RAYS 3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Brian Dozier hit a tiebreaking two-run homer off Tommy Hunter with two outs in the eighth, an inning that began when Danny Farquhar (2-2) walked Chris Gimenez.

Taylor Rogers (2-1) followed with a perfect bottom half, and Brandon Kintzler got his 13th save, despite a two-out home run by Colby Rasmus.

        PHILLIES 4, REDS 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Tommy Joseph hit a solo homer in the fourth inning and a game-ending single in the ninth off Michael Lorenzen (3-1) as Philadelphia won for the third time in 13 games. Cesar Hernandez and Michael Saunders also homered for the Phillies.

Hector Neris (2-2) pitched the ninth, combining with Edubray Ramos, Pat Neshek and Joaquin Benoit for 3 2/3 shutout innings.

        BREWERS 6, DIAMONDBACKS 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Chase Anderson (3-1) didn't allow a hit until Nick Ahmed singled up the middle off the glove of second baseman Eric Sogard leading off the eighth. On Aug. 16, 2015, Ahmed blooped a single to right-center leading off the eighth inning for the Diamondbacks' first hit against Atlanta's Shelby Miller.

Anderson (3-1), who then left, struck out a career-high 11 and walked three, throwing a career-high 114 pitches.

Jett Bandy hit a three-run double off Zack Greinke (6-3) in the fourth, and Jesus Aguilar homered. Arizona had won its previous five games.

        ROYALS 5, INDIANS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Alex Gordon hit a tying single off Boone Logan in the sixth inning and scored on Alcides Escobar' two-run double against Nick Goody. Danny Salazar (3-5) walked Whit Merrifield starting the inning.

Jason Vargas (6-3) allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings. Kelvin Herrera worked the ninth for his second save in two days and No. 11 on the season.

        DODGERS 5, CUBS 0

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Chase Utley drove in three runs with a pair of two-out singles, Chris Taylor hit a two-run homer in a four-run fifth inning and Brandon McCarthy (5-1) and Ross Stripling combined on a three-hitter as Los Angeles won for the eighth time in 10 games.

McCarthy (5-1) allowed two hits in six innings, and Stripling for nine outs for his first big league save.

Chicago has been shut out in three consecutive road games. John Lackey (4-5) gave up five runs, six hits and four walks in six innings.

        ASTROS 5, ORIOLES 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Dallas Keuchel (8-0) returned from a disabled list stint caused by a pinched nerve in his neck and became the major leagues' first eight-game winner, allowing one run and four hits in six innings with eight strikeouts. Will Harris struck out two in a perfect ninth for his second save.

George Springer hit a two-run homer for a 4-1 lead in the fourth against Wade Miley (1-3), who gave up four runs and eight hits in five innings.

        PIRATES 5, METS 4

PITTSBURGH (AP) - John Jaso singled home the tying run against Addison Reed in the ninth inning and the winning run off Josh Edgin with two outs in the 10th.

Tony Watson (3-1) struck out Travis d'Arnaud to strand two runners in the 10th, and the Pirates loaded the bases in the bottom half against Tyler Pill (0-1), who made his big league debut.

On manager Terry Collins' 68th birthday, the Mets blew a save for the fifth time in their last seven chances.

        CARDINALS 3, ROCKIES 0

DENVER (AP) - Adam Wainwright kept up his mastery of the Rockies by scattering three hits over seven innings, Tommy Pham hit a two-run homer and the St. Louis Cardinals beat Colorado. Wainwright (5-3) struck out six and retired the last 10 batters he faced as he moved to 10-1 with a 1.56 ERA over his career against Colorado.

Yadier Molina extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a run-scoring single in the third. Pham had the big blow in the fifth, when he lined a slider Kyle Freeland (5-3) into the left-center seats.

The Cardinals withstood a scare in the eighth, with Trevor Rosenthal working his way out of a bases loaded jam by getting Carlos Gonzalez to ground out. Seung Hwan Oh pitched the ninth for his 11th save.

        GIANTS 6, BRAVES 3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Ty Blach (3-2) pitched shutout ball into the eighth inning and gave San Francisco's struggling offense a boost with an RBI single during a three-run fourth that helped the Giants snap a four-game losing streak.

Nick Hundley homered and drove in three runs and Brandon Belt added a solo shot against Mike Foltynewicz (3-5) as the Giants' bats broke out after being held to six runs during the four-game skid.

        • LEADING OFF: Suzuki learning Dickey; rookies lead Rockies
          May 27, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Sunday:

          KNUCKLE DOWN

Kurt Suzuki had three passed balls in his first game catching knuckleballer R.A. Dickey for Atlanta this season but committed just one in Dickey's next eight starts. Dickey (3-3) makes his 10th start for the Braves in the series finale in San Francisco against Johnny Cueto (4-4) and the Giants.

          ---

          HOT ROOKIE

Rockies right-hander German Marquez will be the third straight rookie the Colorado Rockies have started against St. Louis in the series that concludes Sunday. The rookie trio of Antonio Senzatela, Kyle Freeland and Marquez seem to feed off of each other's performances. Marquez is 3-0 with a 0.95 ERA over his last three starts.

          ---

          GOING DEEP

Tampa Bay's Alex Cobb starts Sunday at Minnesota after pitching seven innings in consecutive starts for the first time since September 2014. He missed 2015 and much of 2016 while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

          • MLB notebook: Hall of Famer Bunning dies
            May 27, 2017

Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Bunning, who went on to serve in Congress as a Kentucky politician, died overnight at the age of 85, the Philadelphia Phillies announced Saturday.

Bunning, a nine-time All-Star, pitched for the Detroit Tigers, Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Dodgers over a 17-year career from 1955 to 1971.

Bunning, one of 23 players in major league history to throw a perfect game in the modern era, was selected to the Hall in 1996 by the Veterans Committee.

In his career, Bunning recorded a 224-184 record and 3.27 ERA with 2,855 strikeouts, which ranks 17th on the all-time major league list. He threw two no-hitters, becoming the first pitcher after 1900 to throw no-hitters in both the American and National League.

--The Chicago White Sox signed free agent Cuban outfielder Luis Robert to a minor league contract, including a $26-million signing bonus, the team announced.

Robert, 19, has played the last four seasons for Ciego de Avila in the Cuban National Series, Cuba's top-level league. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Robert made his debut with the team in 2013 at age 16.

The Cuban prospect became eligible to be signed as a free agent last Saturday after Major League Baseball informed clubs last month that he would not be subject to the June first-year player draft.

--The Chicago White Sox placed infielder Tyler Saladino on the 10-day disabled list with back spasms.

The team also recalled outfield prospect Adam Engel from Triple-A Charlotte prior to Saturday's doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers. Engel has no major league experience.

Saladino, 27, is batting .200 with four RBIs and 10 runs scored in 30 games with the White Sox this season.

--Washington second baseman Daniel Murphy was out of the starting lineup for the second day in a row, as Wilmer Difo started at second for the Nationals on Saturday against the San Diego Padres.

Nationals bench coach Chris Speier, filling in for manager Dusty Baker, said before the game that Murphy was ill. Murphy entered the day batting .316 with nine home runs and 33 RBIs.

--The Oakland Athletics placed right-hander Jesse Hahn on the 10-day disabled list Saturday with a right triceps strain.

Hahn was removed from his last start on Tuesday against the Miami Marlins after two innings and 51 pitches, giving up five runs on seven hits while striking out two. The DL move is retroactive to May 24.

The A's also recalled right-hander Jharel Cotton from Triple-A Nashville to start Saturday afternoon's game against New York at Yankee Stadium.

--The Texas Rangers placed right-hander A.J. Griffin on the 10-day disabled list because of with a left intercostal muscle strain.

Griffin was forced to leave Friday night's game due to the injury after 1 1/3 innings in his start against the Toronto Blue Jays. Griffin is 4-2 with a 5.77 ERA in eight starts with Texas this season.

To replace Griffin on the active roster, the Rangers recalled right-hander Dillon Gee from Triple-A Round Rock.

            • Sunday’s six-pack

Odds on some long shots to win the US Open golf tourney next month:

              — Ernie Els, Angel Cabrera 300-1

              — Harris English, Danny Lee 250-1

              — Ian Poulter, Luke Donald 200-1

              — Webb Simpson, Ryan Palmer 150-1

              — Graeme McDowell, Tony Finau 125-1

              — Jim Furyk, Kevin Kisner 100-1

              *****************************

              Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……

              13) The last four times umpire Alan Porter worked home plate, there have been a total of 41 walks (11-11-11-10); this is only the second such streak in 2016-17 in the major leagues- David Rackley had a 4-game streak with 10+ walks LY, but three of his four games went extra innings, including a 13-inning and a 17-inning game. None of Porter’s games went extra frames.

If you care about such things, over is 5-1-1 in Porter’s last seven games behind the plate.

              12) Aaron Rodgers gave his offensive linemen $20,000 ATV’s for presents this week; have to take care of the people who protect you.

              11) This is the first time ever the Colorado Rockies have had both a winning April and a winning May to start the season.

              10) Marlins were down 2-1 in bottom of 5th, had bases loaded and Giancarlo Stanton up, so of course, Dee Gordon gets picked off first by the catcher to end the inning. Do we have a metric for stupidity? Can the numbers guys quantify how deflating something like this is? I didn’t think so……

              9) Dodgers pitcher Alex Wood hasn’t allowed a run in his last 25.2 IP; in his last six starts, he is 5-0 with a 1.31 RA. Pretty important guy for a team whose pitchers have been injury-plagued.

              8) On July 2, 2013, Jake Arrieta was traded by the Orioles with Pedro Strop and cash to the Cubs for Steve Clevinger and Scott Feldman. Looking back on the trade, it was a huge blunder by the Orioles.

But Arrieta’s career turned around after the trade, when he saw a Pilates studio while walking around Chicago with his wife; he got into a class, he got himself into much better shape and his career took off from there.

About 10-12 years ago, I actually tried Pilates for a couple of weeks (stop laughing); it was really, really hard and I quit (it was hard and I am soft). Sitting on the couch is way more fun.

              7) Toronto Blue Jays got Troy Tulowitzki and Josh Donaldson back from injuries this weekend; would expect them to go on a roll soon.

              6) I have an odd fascination with actors’ resumes, and the roles they’ve played.

Finally saw the Tom Hanks movie about the pilot Sully who landed a commercial airliner in the Hudson River, with no fatalities; his co-pilot in the movie is the same guy who was Al Pacino’s offensive coordinator in Any Given Sunday.

Aaron Eckhart is the guy; very good actor. He also played Texas Longhorns’ coaching legend Darrell Royal in a movie about the Longhorns.

              5) A junior high teacher in Houston gave out certificates to students, included one given to a student that said “Most likely to become a terrorist.” Apparently, the teacher wasn’t kidding.

What would inspire someone to actually do that? Do they want to get fired? If you don’t like your students, fine; just keep it to yourself.

              4) Found a new bad TV show to watch late at night; Second Wives’ Club, on E! about these young women who married rich, older men who had all been married at least once before. Not sure why I enjoy watching it, but the people in it are so repulsive it is hard to turn it off.

              3) White Sox 3, Tigers 1— Chicago pitchers walked nine, struck out 15 as Tyler Danish won his first major league start. Very unusual for a team to walk 9+ guys in a game and win, much less toss a shutout. Detroit left 12 men on base, in the first game of a twinbill.

Detroit’s Michael Fulmer threw 96 pitches in his 8-inning complete game. White Sox pitchers threw a total of 185 pitches in nine innings. Weird game.

              2) Red Sox 6, Mariners 0— Seattle lost six of last seven games; they’re 1-7 in last eight road tilts. In their first two games at Fenway this weekend, Mariners didn’t scored a run.

              1) RIP to Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Bunning 85, who pitched 17 years in the big leagues, tossed a perfect game, and later served 24 years in Congress. Thats a full life. RIP, sir.

              ****************************

Sunday Extra: Trying not to get aggravated…….

I tried not to get aggravated Saturday when the A’s lost 3-2 in the Bronx; the home plate ump tossed Jed Lowrie, tossed Bob Melvin. Let’s put it this way; a friend of mine who is a New York fan texted me during the game to tell me how bad home plate umpire Will Little is.

Late Saturday night, got an e-mail from another friend, asking what I thought of Little’s performance Saturday. So I went to my umpire records and looked up how New York has done with Little behind the plate the last three years. Here are the facts from 2015-17:

              2015
              Bronx W5-2 @ Baltimore +$123 U9
              Bronx W3-1 @ Seattle -$115 U7

              2016
              Bronx W6-3 vs Tampa Bay +$103 O8
              Bronx W7-3 vs Kansas City -$130 O8

              2017
              Bronx W3-2 vs St Louis +$123, U8
              Bronx W3-2 vs Oakland -$145, U9.5

Not going to say another bleeping word except this: if you were a big league manager, would you want Will Little umping the plate in a road game in the Bronx?

                            May 28, 2017

Hottest team: Red Sox (6-0 past six games, 8-3 past 11 at home)

The Red Sox haven't been very good hosts to the Mariners, winning the first two games by a combined 9-0 score. Boston is a perfect 5-0 on the homestand and they have won six in a row overall. Now they'll have 2016 AL Cy Young award winner Rick Porcello on the hill against Christian Bergman in a game that looks like a mismatch on paper. The Mariners are 8-20 over their past 28 road games, 1-7 in their past eight overall and just 1-10 in their past 11 against American League East foes. Boston is 7-1 in Porcello's past eight home starts agaisnt a team with a losing record and 20-8 in his past 28 at Fenway overall.

Coldest team: Rangers (0-5 past five games overall)

The Rangers rattled off 10 consecutive victories from May 9-19, but they have followed that impressive run up with a 1-6 record over the past seven outings, all on the road. They rallied nicely in Friday's series opener in Toronto, falling 7-6, but Marco Estrada outpitched Yu Darvish in Saturday's middle game for a 3-1 victory. Texas is also 0-4 in their past four against right-handed starters, 0-4 in Andrew Cashner's past four road outings and 4-18 in their past 22 games against AL East opponents.

Hottest pitcher: Clayton Kershaw, Dodgers (7-2, 2.01 ERA)

Kershaw will match up with Jon Lester of the Cubs in a marquee pitching matchup on Sunday afternoon. Kershaw has limited to the Cubs to a .218 batting average in eight career starts while posting 68 strikeouts over 53 2/3 innings. He tied a season best with 10 strikeouts last time out against St. Louis, and he has 10 quality starts in 10 outings so far. Kershaw has been outstanding at home or on the road, but he is especially hot when pitching under the sun. He is 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA in two day starts, walking none, striking out 13 and limiting the opposition to a .106 average.

Coldest pitcher: Josh Tomlin, Indians (2-6, 6.70 ERA)

Tomlin won a career-high 13 games last season, but he is on pace to lose 21 games if he doesn't start to turn things around. He has shown no signs of that, allowing 10 earned runs in just 8 2/3 innings over his past two outings, both losses. The Indians are 1-5 over Tomlin's past six home starts while the Indians are 0-5 over their past five at home. The Indians are also 3-7 in Tomlin's past 10 starts while the Royals are an impressive 7-3 over their past 10 games against a right-handed starter. Kansas City is also just 1-6 in their past seven with Tomlin on the hil and 3-7 in their past 10 with Tomlin on the bump at Progressive Field.

Biggest UNDER run: Nationals (1-6 past seven games overall)

The Nationals pitching staff has been on point lately, allowing a total of nine runs over the past six outings. They have outscored the Padres by an 8-1 margin in the first two games of the series. Joe Ross has a 5.32 ERA overall, but he is coming off an eight-inning outing Tuesday against the Mariners when he allowed just one earned run with five hits and six strikeouts. The 'under' is also 5-2 in San Diego's past seven against teams with a winning record, although the 'over' has cashed in five of Jhoulys Chacin's past six starts overall, including 4-0 in his past four road outings. The 'over' is also 6-0 in Ross' past six starts overall, and 6-0 in his past six in D.C.

Biggest OVER run: Pirates (5-0 past five games overall)

The 'over' cashed in five straight for the Pirates, although they needed late-inning heroics from John Jaso in Saturday's extra-innings victory. Jaso came up as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning and delivered the game-tying single to force extras, then he belted an RBI single in the 10th to send the PNC Park crowd to the parking lot with smiles on their faces. Pittsburgh won 5-4 with a line of 8 1/2 runs as 'under' bettors cursed closer Addison Reed, who blew his second save in eight chances.

Matchup to watch: Pirates vs. Mets

The Mets and Pirates will lock horns in Sunday's nationally televised game at night. Matt Harvey has a 3-3 record with a 5.36 ERA this season, and he hasn't won back-to-back starts since April 6-11. The former standout at the University of North Carolina has had difficulty with walks, issuing three or more free passes in each of his past five outings while walking two or more in seven consecutive starts. New York is just 3-7 in their past 10 following a loss, and they're 4-11 in their past 15 games overall. They're also a dismal 1-10 over their past 11 in Game 3 of a series. The Pirates are 11-4 in their past 15 against the Mets, including 7-2 in the past nine meetings in the Steel City.

Betcha didn’t know: San Francisco's Johnny Cueto has dropped back-to-back starts as he has been affected by blisters on his pitching hand. As such he has yielded nine runs over 12 innings during the two-start span. The veteran has compiled a 1-3 record with a 3.86 ERA across seven career starts against the Braves, who have won or tied in each of their past five series (3-0-2). It will be a contrast in styles, as Atlanta rolls out knuckleballer R.A. Dickey. The veteran has walked 28 batters and struck out 25 this season, although he is 2-1 with a 2.88 ERA in five career starts against San Francisco.

Biggest public favorite: Astros (-225) vs. Orioles

Biggest public underdog: Diamondbacks (+120) at Brewers

Biggest line move: Marlins (+120 to -110) vs. Angels
