  • LEADING OFF: Sale tries for 9th double-digit K game in row
    May 23, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Wednesday:

    A BIG FAN

Red Sox ace Chris Sale can set a major league record by striking out at least 10 batters in his ninth straight game when he starts against Texas at Fenway Park. The lefty has already matched the mark of eight in a row, which he did in 2015 with the White Sox and Pedro Martinez accomplished with Boston in 1999. Sale has fanned 95 in 65 2/3 over nine starts in his first year with the Red Sox.

    TWIN WIN

Minnesota goes for its first three-game sweep at Camden Yards since 1996 when emerging right-hander Jose Berrios pitches against Chris Tillman. The AL Central-leading Twins won the series opener 14-7, then turned to pitching as Ervin Santana shut out the Orioles 2-0 Tuesday night.

    NEED HELP

Jeremy Hellickson is off to a nice start for the Phillies, taking a 5-1 record into this outing at home vs. Colorado. But he could use some help - he has more wins the rest of Philadelphia's rotation has combined (four).

    NICE START

Mariners righty Sam Gaviglio looks to build upon his first big league start, when he threw five shutout innings against the White Sox last week. Gaviglio will pitch in Washington, where Bryce Harper and the Nationals homered four times in romping past Seattle 10-1 Tuesday night.

            • Wednesday's Diamond Notes
              May 24, 2017

Hottest team: Rockies (7-2 past nine games, 12-5 past 17 overall)

The Rockies remained red hot, rolling the Phillies by an 8-2 score in Tuesday's game. They have outscored the Phils 16-3 through the first two games. Colorado has also rolled up six or more runs in five stragiht and eight of the past nine games. A lot of casual baseball fans might roll their eyes, figuring the offensive totals are propped up by the rarefied air of Coors Field, but only one of the past nine outings has come at home. The Rockies are 8-2 in their past 10 road games agaisnt right-handed pitching, and they're an impressive 12-2 in their past 14 outings against teams with a winning percentage of .400 or worse. Their winning ways will be put to the test with Tyler Chatwood on the bump, as the team is just 1-4 over his past five starts.

Coldest team Phillies (1-8 past nine games, 4-19 past 23 overall)

The Phillies have been horrendous after a surprisingly good April. Since flipping the calendar to May the Fightin' Phils have managed to rattle off just three wins in 19 outings. A major reason for the losing ways has been a lack of hitting, averaging just 1.5 runs per game over the past four outings. Philadelphia's pitching has also let them down, yielding 6.11 runs per game over the past 19. There is very little reason not to fade the Phillies right now, as they're just bottoming out and not even coming close. They have dropped their past 10 losses by an average of 3.9 runs per game, so run line bettors might want to pay attention, too.

              Hottest pitcher:
Mike Leake, Cardinals (4-2, 2.03 ERA)

The former standout at Arizona State has had plenty of ups and downs in his career. A light has gone off this season, however, as he checks in fourth in the majors with a 2.03 ERA. The key to his success this season has been his limited walks (10) through 53 1/3 innings. Opponents are hitting just .217 against Leake while he brings in an impressive 0.99 WHIP to Wednesday's performance. The Cardinals have struggled overall, winning just once in the past six outings. However, their extra-innings loss on Tuesday was their first setback in the past 10 outings on the road.

Coldest pitcher: Matt Moore, Giants (2-4, 5.37 ERA)

Moore has recorded two much-needed quality starts over his past two outings, but his overall body of work still needs plenty of, well, work. Despite the two quality starts he has walked three batters in each of the outings, and he has issued a whopping 21 free passes in just 52 innings thusfar. His 1.52 WHIP and 5.37 ERA are well above his career numbers. He will work against the struggling defending champion Cubs at Wrigley Field on Wednesday. It has been a nightmare pitching away from home, as Moore is 0-3 with an 8.63 ERA across five starts while the opposition is hitting .343 against him.

Biggest UNDER run: Tigers (6-3 past nine games)

The 'under' hit in two of the three games at home against the Rangers as the Tigers allowed just 13 total runs in the series. The 'under' is 5-1 in Detroit's past six against American League West Division foes while going 4-1 in the past five road games for the Tigers. However, the 'over' is 4-1 in Michael Fulmer's past five road outings, 4-1 in his past five starts overall and 5-2 in his past seven against teams with a winning overall record. The good news is the 'under' is 6-2 in his past eight against AL West teams and 4-1 in his past five against teams with a winning overall mark.

Biggest OVER run: Rockies (5-0 past five games, 5-0 past five road games)

The Rockies helped 'over' bettors cash another winning ticket in Tuesday's game, smashing the Phillies by an 8-2 score. The over is 5-0 in the past five road games, 5-0 in Colorado's past five against right-handed starters and an impressive 16-5 in their past 21 meetings with National League East foes. The over will be put to the test with Chatwood on the hill, as the 'under' is 4-1 over his past five road outings and 7-3 in his past 10 starts overall. With the struggles of the Phillies, the 'over' is a good bet, however. The over is 5-1-1 in Philadelphia's past seven overall and 8-2-1 across their past 11 vs. RHP.

Matchup to watch: Dodgers vs. Cardinals

Will the Cardinals and Dodgers be too tired to push across runs on Wednesday? Lance Lynn and Clayton Kershaw were locked in a pitcher's duel on Tuesday, as extra innings were needed to decide a winner. It wasn't until Logan Forsythe's RBI double in the bottom of the 13th inning before the home crowd went away with a smile on their face. Now, about 19 hours later, they'll meet again. The Dodgers have to contend with the red-hot Leake (see above), while the Cardinals will square off against left-hander Rich Hill. The Cardinals rank 21st in the majors with a .230 average against left-handed hitting and they rank dead-last in the National League (29th overall) with only five homers vs. southpaws.

Betcha didn’t know: The Red Sox will try and contend with Rangers LHP Martin Perez in Wednesday's game in Fenway Park. Boston ranks 30th in the majors with just four homers against left-handed pitching, although they rank seventh in the majors with a .265 average vs. LHP. Boston is 10-1 over their past 11 at home against left-handed starters amd they're 4-1 over the past five home starts by Chris Sale. The Red Sox will look to cool off the red-hot Rangers, a team which is 11-2 over the past 13 games and 5-2 in their past seven against left-handed starting pitching.

Biggest public favorite: Red Sox (-270) vs. Rangers

Biggest public underdog: Cardinals (+170) at Dodgers

Biggest line move: Twins (-140 to -115) at Orioles

NEW YORK (AP) Helped by a great first-inning catch that forced center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury from the game with a concussion and sprained neck, Luis Severino won for the first time in a month and led the New York Yankees to a 3-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night.

On the first pitch of the game, Ellsbury sprinted 107 feet and raised his glove above his head to catch Alcides Escobar's fly. Ellsbury's head jarred into the wall as the ball landed in his glove, and he crumpled to the field. After being checked by manager Joe Girardi and head athletic trainer Steve Donohue, he remained in the game but was replaced by Aaron Hicks starting the second.

Didi Gregorius homered against Jason Hammel (1-6) leading off the third inning.

Severino (3-2) allowed four hits and struck out seven over eight innings. Dellin Betances struck out the side in a perfect ninth for his fourth save.

                    DIAMONDBACKS 8, WHITE SOX 6

PHOENIX (AP) - Jake Lamb homered off a left-hander for only the second time this season, five Diamondbacks drove in at least one run and Arizona completed a three-game sweep and won for the eighth time in nine games.

The Diamondbacks scored six runs in the fifth inning, chasing starter Jose Quintana (2-6) and building a six-run lead, but they had to hold off a White Sox rally.

Jose Abreu and Leury Garcia homered for the White Sox, who were swept for the second time on a 3-7 road trip. The Los Angeles Angels did it to start the trip.

Andrew Chafin (1-0) threw a scoreless fifth inning to get the victory in relief of Randall Delgado.

                    TWINS 4, ORIOLES 3

BALTIMORE (AP) - Jose Berrios took a two-hitter into the seventh inning, Kennys Vargas drove in two runs and Minnesota completed its first three-game sweep in Baltimore since 1996.

Eduardo Escobar had two hits and an RBI for the first-place Twins, who have won six of seven and are a major league best 14-5 on the road.

Berrios (3-0) allowed three runs and four hits over 6 1/3 innings, striking out seven. He was pulled in the seventh after solo homers by Chris Davis and Jonathan Schoop got Baltimore to 4-3.

Brandon Kintzler got the last three outs for his 12th save in 13 tries.

Orioles starter Chris Tillman (1-1) gave up four runs and nine hits in five innings.

                    BLUE JAYS 8, BREWERS 4

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Ryan Goins hit his first career grand slam, one of four homers for Toronto as it swept two-game interleague series and won three straight to finish a seven-game trip.

Kevin Pillar, Devon Travis and Jose Bautista hit solo shots for the Blue Jays, who have homered in four straight games. Bautista's towering shot caromed off the Miller Lite sign high above the center-field wall 400 feet from the plate.

Marcus Stroman (5-2) allowed four hits and a season-high four walks but won his fourth straight game, pitching into the sixth before Domingo Santana's two-out, three-run homer cut Toronto's lead to four.

                    ATHLETICS 4, MARLINS 1

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Sonny Gray struck out a season-high 11 over seven innings in his best start in two years and Khris Davis homered to lead Oakland.

Jed Lowrie matched his career high with four hits including a pair of doubles, and Matt Joyce reached base three times and scored to help the A's earn a split of the two-game interleague series.

Gray (2-1) was dominant while earning his second straight win. He walked one and allowed three hits.

Santiago Casilla got the last three outs for his seventh save.

Edinson Volquez (0-7) allowed three runs over six innings and tied the Marlins franchise record for most consecutive losses to open a season.

                    NATIONALS 5, MARINERS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Anthony Rendon hit a three-run homer for his eighth of the season and Tanner Roark allowed a run over seven innings to lead Washington.

Rendon has three homers and eight RBIs in the Nationals' two victories to open this three-game series.

Roark (4-2) completed seven innings for the first time in seven starts and held the Mariners to 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position.

Mariners rookie Sam Gaviglio (0-1) allowed all five runs - one earned - over six innings as the Mariners lost their fifth straight.

                    Seattle's Robinson Cano went 3 for 4.

                    RED SOX 9, RANGERS 4

BOSTON (AP) - Dustin Pedroia waved home the tiebreaking run on a wild pitch, then singled in two more during Boston's seven-run seventh inning as the Red Sox won their third straight.

Chris Sale (5-2) struck out six, falling short in his attempt to become the first pitcher in baseball's modern era to strike out at least 10 batters in nine straight games in one season. He allowed three earned runs, six hits and a walk in 7 1/3 innings and received more runs of support in the seventh inning alone than in any previous game this season.

Sam Dyson (1-5) faced seven batters in relief of Martin Perez and gave up four hits, three walks - two intentional - and a wild pitch without retiring a batter. Mike Napoli homered for Texas, which has lost three of four to follow a 10-game winning streak.

                    PIRATES 12, BRAVES 5, 10 INNINGS

ATLANTA (AP) - Gift Ngoepe doubled to drive in Andrew McCutchen for the go-ahead run before Pittsburgh Pirates hit three straight homers during a seven-run 10th inning to beat Atlanta.

Pittsburgh's Jose Osuna hit a bases-loaded, two-run single off Jose Ramirez in the ninth to tie it at 5.

After Ngoepe's double, the Pirates put the game away with Josh Harrison's two-run single, followed by homers from David Freese, Osuna and Jordy Mercer - all off Josh Collmenter (0-2). Freese's homer was a two-run shot.

McCutchen snapped a 0-for-15 slump with a pinch-hit single to lead off the 10th.

The last time the Pirates hit three straight homers was Sept. 13, 2013 against the Cubs. Adam Frazier hit a three-run homer in the second.

Felipe Rivero (2-1) pitched a scoreless ninth.

                    RAYS 5, ANGELS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Steven Souza Jr. homered twice to rally Tampa Bay past Los Angeles.

Colby Rasmus also went deep for the Rays and Erasmo Ramirez pitched six strong innings in his third start of the season.

Albert Pujols hit his 597th career home run, a two run shot in the first for the Angels. It was his sixth of the season.

Ramirez (3-0) gave up four hits and walked one while striking out two. Alex Colome got the last three outs for his 12th save.

Souza tied it with a two-run homer off Ricky Nolasco (2-4) in the second. Back-to-back doubles by Corey Dickerson and Kevin Kiermaier put the Rays up 3-2 in the third. Rasmus and Souza then homered in the seventh.

                    ROCKIES 7, PHILLIES 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Tyler Chatwood allowed just one hit in seven scoreless innings, Carlos Gonzalez homered and Colorado beat Philadelphia.

Chatwood befuddled the Phillies, striking out a season-high eight batters and only allowing a single by Andrew Knapp in the fifth inning. It was the third time Chatwood (4-6) earned a win in his career while allowing just one hit.

Gonzalez hit a three-run homer for the Rockies, who have won four straight. It was their major league-best 18th win on the road.

The Rockies pounded starter Jeremy Hellickson (5-2) for seven runs in the third.

                    CUBS 5, GIANTS 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Anthony Rizzo hit two home runs, Kyle Hendricks tossed seven strong innings and Chicago held on to beat San Francisco.

Rizzo hit solo homers off Matt Moore (2-5) in the second and fourth innings for his 14th career multi-home run game. He has four homers over his last four games and 11 on the season.

Javier Baez made it 3-2 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Miguel Montero doubled and scored in the seventh. Jason Heyward tripled and came around on Jon Jay's sacrifice fly in the eighth after the Giants left the bases loaded.

Hendricks (4-2) gave up two runs and five hits. He struck out five and walked none over seven innings, retiring 15 of the last 16 batters he faced.

Wade Davis gave up a two-run homer to Mac Williamson with one out in the ninth to make it 5-4 before finishing up for his 10th savein 10 chances.

                    TIGERS 6, ASTROS 3

HOUSTON (AP) - Jose Iglesias finished a triple shy of the cycle, Ian Kinsler had two hits and scored twice, and Detroit snapped a three-game skid.

Iglesias, who scored three runs, doubled to lead off the eighth. He moved to second on a single by Kinsler before scoring on Alex Avila's RBI grounder off Chris Devenski (3-3) to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead. Following an intentional walk to Miguel Cabrera, Kinsler scored on Victor Martinez RBI grounder.

Iglesias then hit a two-run homer in the ninth.

In the third, Iglesias scored on Charlie Morton's wild pitch before Kinsler scored on Cabrera's double-play grounder to give Detroit a 2-0 lead.

Shane Greene (1-0) retired all five batters he faced for the win.

                    PADRES 6, METS 5

NEW YORK (AP) - Hunter Renfroe snapped an eighth-inning tie with a titanic home run, Brad Hand pitched out of a huge jam in the ninth and San Diego rallied for the win.

New York loaded the bases with nobody out against Hand on two singles and a walk. But the left-hander struck out Curtis Granderson and Rene Rivera on breaking balls before Juan Lagares flied out to end it.

An excited Hand pounded his glove after holding on for his third major league save and first this season.

After trailing by four, the Padres pulled even when Wil Myers rocketed a two-run single off the top of the right-center fence in the seventh. Renfroe then homered off Josh Smoker (0-2).

Ryan Buchter (3-2) worked a hitless inning for the win.

                    REDS 4, INDIANS 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Billy Hamilton scored from first base on Zack Cozart's two-run single with two outs in the ninth inning against closer Cody Allen to lift Cincinnati.

The speedy Hamilton reached after narrowly beating out an apparent game-ending double play - he was ruled safe after a replay review, putting runners at first and third for Cozart.

With Hamilton running, Cozart hit a sinking liner to left. Michael Brantley couldn't make a diving catch and the ball rolled a few feet away. Pinch-runner Arismendy Alcantara scored to tie it and Hamilton also raced home.

Allen (0-2) blew his first save since Aug. 17. He had recorded 22 consecutive saves.

Michael Lorenzen (3-0) pitched the eighth, and Raisel Iglesias retired Brantley with two on in the ninth for his eighth save.

The game was delayed by rain in the top of the sixth inning for 2 hours, 1 minute.

35-1— Adam Hadwin, Tony Finau, Zach Johnson

                      ********************************

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……..

                      13) Dodgers beat St Louis 2-1 in 13 innings late Tuesday night, but Cardinals tied the game in the 9th inning in an odd way. Clayton Kershaw was going for a complete game shutout but threw a wild pitch with a man on second and Randall Grichuk scored all the way from second with the tying run. Don’t see that more than a couple of times a year.

                      12) That game Tuesday started the Cardinals out on a 47-game in 48-day stretch that takes them up to the All-Star break. Has to be a makeup game in there somewhere, since teams generally aren’t allowed to play more than 20 consecutive days.

                      11) They had a 3:12 rain delay in Atlanta Tuesday nite; with non-division opponents only visiting a city once a year, teams don’t want to have to play doubleheaders, so they wait the rain out and finish the game when they can, which in this case was close to 2am.

                      10) If you’re trying to develop young pitchers, like the Milwaukee Brewers are, is it smart to have your AAA farm team in the high altitude of Colorado Springs?

Arizona, Colorado, Milwaukee, San Diego and the Mets all have their AAA teams in high altitude cities.

                      9) North Carolina’s 6-10 Tony Bradley scored 7.1 pts/game in 14.6 minutes per game, but he is bolting to the NBA, UNC’s first one/done player since 2007 (Brandan Wright).

                      8) Most overused word in English language these days: “process”. If ballplayers don’t know what to say during an interview, they “trust the process”- its become a cliche.

                      7) Former Duke guard Frank Jackson had a stress reaction in his foot last winter at Duke but reportedly played pain-free through the season, but decided to have surgery on the foot now to begin the rehabilitation process- he is expected to be back by late July, but summer league is in early July.

Unless the kid got a promise from an NBA team that they will draft him, what on earth was he thinking, signing with an agent? That prevented him from going back to school, having the operation on Duke’s dime, rehabbing all summer and then playing for the Blue Devils next winter.

                      6) Purdue’s chances of making the Final Four next spring went down the drain when big man Caleb Swanigan stayed in the NBA Draft. Matt Painter is suspect as a game coach, so they probably wouldn’t have made it anyway, but having Swanigan gave them an advantage.

                      5) All-time, there have been 18,988 major league baseball players; Houston’s new backup catcher Juan Centeno became the 875th all-time Astro this week.

                      4) Colorado’s Charlie Blackmon has 44 RBI, most in the major leagues and he bats leadoff— part of that is because Colorado has sacrificed 22 times (most in MLB) this year, giving him lot of guys in scoring position when he bats.

Blackmon has come to bat with a guy on 3rd base 15 times this year (T2 in MLB), also 15 times with a man on second base (most in MLB). Makes it easier to get a lot of RBI that way.

                      3) Phillies were 12-12 on May 1st; they are 3-17 since then, with all three wins in games started by Jeremy Hellickson- they’ve lost their last 15 games not started by Hellickson.

                      2) If/when David Ortiz gets in the Hall of Fame and I think he will, then Edgar Martinez has to get in, too, since that would eliminate the anti-DH bias. Playing in Seattle shouldn’t work against him; Ortiz played in the eastern media spotlight, Martinez didn’t.

Martinez had a career on-base percentage of .418, he hit .312 with 309 homers. A great hitter.

                      1) Eagles’ QB Carson Wentz spent 10 days in LA this spring with QB gurus Adam Dedeaux and Tom House (of baseball fame), to improve his throwing mechanics, I guess. Doug Pederson is the Eagles’ coach, a former NFL QB and apparently he wasn’t all that happy Wentz did that.

                        • LEADING OFF: Cubs stage "Anchorman" trip, Pujols nears 600
                          May 24, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Thursday:

                          STAY CLASSY, CHICAGO

With his Chicago Cubs hovering just over .500, manager Joe Maddon is borrowing inspiration from the Channel 4 news team: new suits! The Cubs will sport ''Anchorman'' themed outfits when they leave Chicago for Los Angeles to begin a road trip that will also take them through San Diego, site of Will Ferrell's comedy about a local news station. There will be plenty of Ron Burgundys and Brian Fantanas on the flight, to be sure, but Maddon had one request: to dress infielder Tommy La Stella as weatherman Brick Tamland. ''They're like two interchangeable guys,'' Maddon said. ''I see Brick, I see Tommy. I see Tommy, I see Brick. Put some glasses on Tommy, dress him up, some sideburns ... I got Brick.''

                          PUJOLS' PURSUIT

Albert Pujols is within striking distance of 600 home runs. He slugged the 597th of his career Wednesday, and he'll resume his quest to become the ninth member of the 600-homer club when the Angels complete a series at Tampa Bay. Los Angeles then travels for three games at Miami before returning to Anaheim for a seven-game homestand.

                          SHAKING UP THE STANDINGS

Two of the NL's biggest surprises open a four-game series when the Brewers host the Diamondbacks. Milwaukee leads the NL Central buoyed by one of the majors' top offenses, though it will be looking to snap a three-game skid behind right-hander Zach Davies (5-2, 5.44 ERA). Arizona, meanwhile, has won eight of nine games and is 10 games over .500 (29-19) for the first time since 2011. Diamondbacks lefty Robbie Ray (3-3, 3.91) pitched shutout ball into the eighth inning against San Diego last time out.

                          PITCHING IN

Jacob deGrom (3-1, 3.56) fought through a ripped callus on his pitching hand to finish a strong start last time out, and now he'll hope to avoid any lingering issues in an outing against San Diego. The New York Mets well-coifed righty has piled up 76 strikeouts in 55 2/3 innings this season, easily the best rate of his career. The rebuilding Padres will call up right-hander Dinelson Lamet to start their series finale in place of injured Jered Weaver (left hip inflammation). It will be the major league debut for Lamet, who is 3-2 with a 3.23 ERA in eight starts at Triple-A El Paso. ''Looking forward to watching Lamet go show his big league stuff,'' manager Andy Green said. ''I know we're excited about that.''

                          BIG 44 FOR BARTOLO

Bartolo Colon celebrated his 44th birthday Wednesday, but another big number is of greater concern heading into his start against Pittsburgh: his ERA. Colon has a 6.38 mark, easily the highest of his career. Only two of his nine outings this season have been quality starts, a sharp drop off from his solid 2016 season with the New York Mets. Even so, Braves manager Brian Snitker says Colon ''has helped his younger teammates a lot with how he goes about things.''
