        • LEADING OFF: Ortiz might get a rest, Indians minus Carrasco
          September 18, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

          RESTING UP?

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz might get the night off when the AL East leaders try to finish a four-game sweep of the Yankees at Fenway Park. Boston manager John Farrell said the 40-year-old designated hitter might get a break after running a lot the last couple of days. New York will see how second baseman Starlin Castro feels, a day after he strained his right hamstring and exited early.

          TOUGH BREAK

The AL Central-leading Indians will play for the first time since losing starter Carlos Carrasco to a broken right hand. He was injured Saturday on his second pitch of the game when he was struck by a line drive from Detroit's Ian Kinsler. Carrasco was the team's No. 2 starter - Cleveland already was missing No. 3 starter Danny Salazar, who has not pitched since Sept. 9 because of a strained right forearm and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

          ROLLIN'

Cubs righty Kyle Hendricks starts for the NL Central champions when Milwaukee plays at Wrigley Field. Hendricks leads the majors with a 2.03 ERA and took a no-hit bid into the ninth inning in his last start at St. Louis. He is 11-1 with a 1.27 ERA in his last 16 outings.

          MAYBE READY

Major league home run leader Mark Trumbo has missed two straight games for Baltimore because of back spasms. He's hit 42 homers and could return for the series wrapup against Tampa Bay at Camden Yards.

          NICE START

Ivan Nova pitches for the Pirates in the series final at Cincinnati. He is 5-0 with a 2.41 ERA in eight starts since Pittsburgh got him in a trade with the Yankees.

Bettis (13-7) helped himself with two walks and an RBI. Adam Ottavino got his fifth save.

Jarred Cosart (0-4) took the loss.

                5) Cincinnati Bengals, +3.5 (401)- L

                4) Kansas City Chiefs, +3 (419)- L

                3) Jacksonville Jaguars, +3 (426)- L

                2) Green Bay Packers, -2.5 (507)

                1) Seattle Seahawks, -4.5 (541)- L (Ha!!!!)

                Top 6 season record: 4-7

Monday’s List of 14: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday

Titans 16, Lions 15–Detroit blew 21-3 lead last week, rallied to win; they led this game 15-3 after 3rd quarter. Tennessee has allowed one offensive TD in two games. 79-year old Dick LeBeau is the Titans’ DC; he played his whole 14-year career in the Motor City.

Texans 19, Chiefs 12–KC has been outscored 34-6 in first half of its two games; they didn’t score a TD here. There have been 63 offensive TDs scored this week with 65 FGs tried, compared to 77 TDs LW, with 65 FGs tried. Favorites are 7-7 vs spread so far this week.

Patriots 31, Dolphins 24– Jimmy Garoppolo posted a 21-0 lead before he hurt his shoulder and left for the day. Rookie Jacoby Brissett took over; Miami stormed back but couldn’t catch up, so now heading into a Week 3 Thursday game with Houston, the Patriots have a rookie QB and no one to back him up- by time you read this, they’ll probably have signed someone.

Garoppolo’s stint as the #1 QB may be over, unless he can play in Week 4; Brady returns October 9 in Cleveland.

Ravens 25, Browns 20– Cleveland took a 20-0 lead with its third TD of the day with 4:34 left in first quarter; Luke McCown looked like Frank Ryan or Brian Sipe, but Ravens blocked the PAT, ran it back for two points, and the Browns never scored again.

Gut-punch loss for young Browns, who will get a big boost in Week 5 when their best WR (Josh Gordon) returns from a suspension. Ravens were 10-16 on 3rd down in this game.

Steelers 24, Bengals 16– Rained during this game; Bengals threw for 366 yards, ran for only 46, making their 2-game totals 690 passing yards, 103 on the ground– not nearly balanced enough. Of course, Cincy hasn’t played a home game yet either.

Cowboys 27, Redskins 23– Cousins threw an end zone pick with Redskins up 23-20 with 10:35 left, then rookie QB Prescott led Dallas to the winning TD, driving 80 yards in 11 plays (5:50). Cowboys are now 9-4 vs spread in their last 13 NFC East road games. When you start the season with two home games and are 0-2, no bueno.

Giants 16, Saints 13– Last year Denver won two games without scoring an offensive TD, the only two NFL games to end that way all year. So far this year, there have been three– Minnesota LW and Giants/Rams this week.

Last year, Saints beat Giants 52-49 in Superdome; this game had one TD on offense, and Giants scored a TD on blocked FG which obviously was a huge factor in the game. New York won with a -3 turnover ratio, and that is pretty rare in the NFL.

Panthers 46, 49ers 27– Weird game; 7 turnovers, 7 TDs, 6 FGs tried. Total yardage was 529-302 Carolina. Over is 8-6 so far this week; of the 63 TDs this week, 18 came on plays of 20+ yards (28.6%), compared to 17 of 77 last week (22.1%).

Cardinals 40, Buccaneers 7– Awful game for Tampa Bay; they turned ball over five times, averaged 4.0 yards/pass attempt- they have to be happy to be 1-1 going into their home opener next week. Arizona has long trip to Buffalo next week (better September than December) in its road opener.

Rams 9, Seahawks 3– Russell Wilson is playing thru a high ankle sprain; he cannot run well and until he can, Seattle’s offense is in trouble- they scored one TD in their first two games.

As for the Rams, typical Jeff Fisher; beat the good team (Seattle), lose to the cruddy 49ers. LA has not scored a TD yet, though the offense had nice drives in this game which flipped field position and took pressure off the defense, which was excellent here.

Winning is better than losing, especially when 91,000 people showed up for the home opener. But rookie QB Jared Goff will play soon and rookie WRs Spruce and Cooper have to get into the lineup too.

It was a happier day at Armadillo World Headquarters.

Broncos 34, Colts 20– Denver scored two defensive TDs, held Colts to 253 yards (Andrew Luck was only 21-40 passing). Indy is 0-2, allowing 73 points in two games.

Was reading something on the Interweb last week, debating Luck vs Cam Newton as a QB; put me down for Newton, no doubt about it.

Falcons 35, Raiders 28– Atlanta averaged 11.1 yards/pass attempt, losing despite a 9-yard edge in average field position. Oakland is only NFL team that shares its home field with a big league baseball team- they allowed 69 points in splitting their first two games.

Chargers 38, Jaguars 14– San Diego blew a 21-0 lead LW, had a 35-0 lead in this game; that’s impressive. Chargers drove 75 yards for a TD on their first drive of both games this season- that’s good coaching and a veteran QB who is one of the best.

                    • LEADING OFF: Bumgarner vs Kershaw again, Porcello vs O's
                      September 18, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors on Monday:

                      HELLO AGAIN

Giants left-hander Madison Bumgarner (14-9, 2.66 ERA) faces three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw (11-3, 1.81) in what will be the 11th matchup between the two southpaws, including the third this season. The Dodgers won the previous two matchups, even when Bumgarner homered off Kershaw on April 9. Kershaw is making his third start since returning from the disabled list. He's 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA over eight innings since coming back, averaging 65 pitches in two starts.

                      KINGS OF THE HILL

Rick Porcello (20-4, 3.12) looks to strengthen his Cy Young Award case in a pivotal start against Baltimore. AL East-leading Boston likely ended the Yankees' hopes of winning the division over the weekend, and it has a chance to do the same in a four-game series with the O's this week. Porcello pitched eight dominant innings last time out against Baltimore, but the Red Sox lost to Kevin Gausman and the O's 1-0. Dylan Bundy (9-5, 3.88) opposes Porcello in this series opener.

                      THOR TO THE RESCUE

Noah Syndergaard (13-8, 2.43) tries to cover some innings for the well-worn Mets bullpen in a game against Atlanta. Including the 4 2/3 innings Gabriel Ynoa pitched Sunday in a spot start for scratched Jacob deGrom, New York's bullpen has worked 18 innings over New York's past two games. Syndergaard already has a career-high 174 innings pitched this season for the Mets, who lead the NL wild-card race by one game over the Giants.

                      DRIVE FOR 100

The Cubs open a series against Cincinnati hoping not just to edge closer to home-field advantage, but also their 100th victory. Chicago has 94 wins. ''It's a pretty neat number. I've never done that before,'' said manager Joe Maddon, who won 97 in 2008 with Tampa and last year with Chicago.

                      TESTY AND TESTED

The Tigers hope for good news after Ian Kinsler was sent for concussion tests Sunday. Kinsler got his helmet knocked off by a pitch from Trevor Bauer in a 9-5 victory over Cleveland. He grabbed the side of his head after being struck, was examined and went to first. Kinsler later yelled at Bauer when the pitcher plunked Victor Martinez, and then was ejected a couple innings later. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Kinsler, who committed a fielding error at second base in the fifth, showed symptoms later in the game.

                      • D'backs part ways with Watson; La Russa says he may be next
                        September 18, 2016

PHOENIX (AP) The Arizona Diamondbacks are parting with senior vice president of baseball operations De Jon Watson, and chief baseball officer Tony La Russa says he and general manager Dave Stewart may also be fired after the season.

La Russa announced Watson's departure after a 10-9 win over the Dodgers on Sunday.

La Russa says he will meet with owner Ken Kendrick and president and CEO Derrick Hall eventually about his status. La Russa says ''if it gets turned over to the next person, you gladly turn it over'' because the team is more than 20 games under .500.

Arizona aggressively acquired pitchers Zack Greinke and Shelby Miller in the offseason, but the club is just one game out of last place in the NL West at 63-86. La Russa called himself ''the most responsible person'' for the disappointing season.

Watson was in his second season with the club and oversaw the franchise's player development and professional, amateur and international scouting departments.

The Royals look to put a crimp in the Cleveland Indians' plans of locking up the American League Central when the teams kick off a three-game series Monday night at Progressive Field.

Our MLB cheat sheet breaks down the best MLB betting notes so you can handicap every series like a pro this week, including the Kansas City Royals who will look to spoil the Cleveland Indians' party.

                              Royal Pain

The Kansas City Royals look to put a crimp in the Cleveland Indians' plans of locking up the American League Central when the teams kick off a three-game series Monday night at Progressive Field. Kansas City could be in tough this week, as it has dropped five of six games it has played in Cleveland this season and was the underdog in all six. The Royals also won't be able to rely on new staff ace Danny Duffy, who pitched Sunday against the Chicago White Sox.

                              Legendary Lefties

Two of the best left-handers in baseball square off Monday night on the West coast as Madison Bumgarner and the San Francisco Giants visit Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The two have faced off twice this season, with Kershaw's Dodgers prevailing both times - but both outings came back in April, before Bumgarner caught fire to emerge as the Cy Young favorite. Bumgarner's Giants won three of four head-to-head meetings in 2015, going Under in three of the four starts.

                              Eastern Showdown

Top spot in the American League East is up for grabs this week as the Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles duel in a four-game series beginning Monday at Camden Yards. The Orioles may have the momentum after taking two of three from division-leading Boston at Fenway Park earlier this month, but the teams have played the season series to a near-stalemate, with the Orioles having won eight of 15 meetings to date.

                              Injury Updates

                              * To say the Indians are in trouble without the services of starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco may be an understatement. Carrasco, who will miss the remainder of the season with a broken hand, was one of the top pitchers in the AL Central this season, with the Indians going 16-9 in his 25 starts in 2015.

                              * New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes is considered day-to-day after leaving Sunday's game against the Minnesota Twins with nausea and dizziness. The Mets can ill afford to be without Cespedes in its quest for a National League playoff spot; they're 12-15 for a whopping -574 units in 27 games with Cespedes out of the lineup.

                              Hitting Notes

                              * Mark Trumbo continues to mash, returning from a two-game absence to belt his major league-leading 43rd home run in Sunday's triumph over Tampa Bay. The Orioles have Trumbo to thank for their spot in the pennant race; they're 29-9 in games in which Trumbo has gone deep at least once.

                              * Washington Nationals shortstop Trea Turner is making doubters out of even his staunchest critics - especially those based in Atlanta. The rookie infielder has obliterated the Braves this season, batting .475 with five doubles, six home runs, seven stolen bases, 12 RBIs and a stunning 20 runs scored in just 13 games.

                              Pitching Notes

                              * J.A. Happ looks to cap a dream season with his 20th win of the season as he leads the Toronto Blue Jays into Seattle for a date with his former team on Tuesday night. Happ, who is aiming to become the majors' second 20-game winner, enters the week ranked sixth in the majors in units won ($1,189).

                              * Rich Hill has been making Under bettors happy since joining the Los Angeles Dodgers in a trade with Oakland earlier this summer. Hill is 0-3-1 in four starts with the Dodgers; that four-game stretch increases his streak of starts without an Over to nine (0-8-1) going into Tuesday's outing against Johnny Cueto and the Giants.

                              Totals Trend

Keep riding that Kansas City Over streak - it isn't showing any signs of slowing down. The Royals went 2-1 O/U against the White Sox over the weekend, extending their sensational run to 18-3-1 O/U since the end of August.
