  • LEADING OFF: Tigers chase Tribe; Cards face Giants again
    September 16, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors Friday:

    NOW OR NEVER

Miguel Cabrera and the Detroit Tigers open a three-game series in Cleveland, perhaps their last chance to get back in the AL Central race. The Indians hold a six-game lead with 16 to play, and their magic number for clinching the division title is 11. There's a marquee matchup on the mound, with Rookie of the Year favorite Michael Fulmer (10-6, 2.76 ERA) and the Tigers facing Cy Young Award contender Corey Kluber (16-9, 3.05). Cleveland catcher Yan Gomes, on the disabled list since July 18, could be activated before the game.

    ROUND 2

San Francisco hosts St. Louis in the second game of a pivotal, four-game series between NL wild-card contenders. On the mound for the Giants is left-hander Matt Moore, who is 3-4 in eight starts since he was acquired from Tampa Bay at the Aug. 1 trade deadline. Rookie right-hander Luke Weaver (1-2) pitches for the Cardinals. He has 39 strikeouts and eight walks in six major league starts covering 31 innings.

    NOT DONE YET

Making a fierce charge in the wild-card race, the Mariners send ace Felix Hernandez (11-5) to the mound against AL West rival Houston. Hernandez is 7-1 with a 4.22 ERA in his last 11 starts since returning from the disabled list July 20. Collin McHugh (10-10) seeks his fourth straight win for the Astros. The right-hander is 8-3 in his career against Seattle, including 3-0 this season with a 1.50 ERA.

    ROYAL FLUSH

The defending World Series champions are fading fast. Kansas City was just outscored 43-12 at home during a four-game sweep by an Oakland team that was running last in the AL West when it arrived in town. Ian Kennedy (11-9) tries to get the Royals back on track when they host Chris Sale (15-8, 3.03) and the White Sox. Kennedy is 5-0 with a 2.16 ERA since the start of August.

    • Friday’s six-pack

      — Jets 37, Bills 31– Surprisingly fun game; Jets’ coach Bowles needs to learn about game management– when Jets scored to make it 36-24 with 4:02 left, he has to go for 2 there. Not doing so almost cost him dearly.

      — I’ll have more on this later on, but MLB suspended San Diego Padres’ GM AJ Preller for 30 days without pay for hiding medical records of Padre players, and not disclosing info they have to potential trade partners.

      — Padres’ GM/Ivy League genius Preller has had a couple of run-ins with MLB rules before; wonder if he is a Patriots’ fan?

      — Georgia Tech picks up a good hoop recruit in Jose Alvarado– new Tech coach Josh Pastner gets Alvarado out of Rutgers’ backyard.

      — Want to win a bar bet? Indians’ Francisco Lindor leads MLB this year, with 12 sacrifice flies. Matt Kemp has 11.

      — North Dakota State has been paid a total of $1.675 million for playing its last five I-A opponents on road. Bison won all five games- they play at Iowa this week.

Friday’s List of 13: Things I’m looking for this weekend

      13) Miami Dolphins played good defense at Seattle LW, lost 12-10 in last minute to a Super Bowl-winning QB. How will they do against Jimmy Garoppolo in his Foxboro debut?

      12) Florida State-Louisville is a damn good noon game; lot of offense, with Seminoles’ frosh QB Francois getting his first road start.

      11) Cleveland Browns may be 1-17 in season openers, but they’re 5-2 in Week 2 home games. Ravens struggled to a 13-7 home win over Buffalo last week; how will they do in their road opener in their old home?

      10) Stanford won six of its last eight games with USC; Trojans won last week, but a win here would do a lot more to help soothe the beatdown they took from Alabama.

      9) Steelers knocked Cincinnati out of the playoffs LY; Lewis is now 0-7 as a playoff coach. This is a legit rivalry; can Bengals win on road two weeks in a row?

      8) LSU is 15-1 in its last 16 games vs Mississippi State, but only QB to beat the Tigers plays for the Dallas Cowboys now. Fournette is expected to play; would expect LSU to show a more balanced offense with Efling at QB.

      7) Will Josh Norman stay on one side of the field like he did Monday night, or will they figure out how he can cover Dez Bryant all over the field?

      6) When Nick Saban exploded on the sideline at the end of last week’s easy win, he was already preparing for this game with Ole Miss, which beat the Crimson Tide the last two years. I’m guessing practice was a little intense in Tuscaloosa this week.

      5) Rams are under the gun in their first Coliseum home game since 1979; they were so bad Monday night in Santa Clara, natives will be restless if they fall on their faces again. Rams actually swept Seattle last year.

      4) Oklahoma Sooners are a home underdog for the first time in 16 years. Ohio State has only three senior starters, only six starters back from LY.

      3) Tough duty for the Colts, heading to Denver after they lost 39-35 at home to Detroit LW. Siemian was good enough to win in Denver’s opener; Broncos had three extra days to prep after their Thursday night win.

      2) Total in the Oregon-Nebraska game is 74; people in Lincoln are going to be puzzled with having the Cornhuskers play shootouts, when they’ve been such a great running team through the years.

1– Vikings open their new domed stadium Sunday night against Green Bay. Still not sure why they didn’t put a dome on their baseball stadium, but fans have to be happy they don’t have to sit outside on December weekends anymore.

-Tiebreaker games will be played to determine Division Championships, even if the two tied Clubs are assured of participating in the Postseason. If a Division Championship tiebreaker game is necessary, the head-to-head record between the tied Clubs will determine home-field advantage. If the head-to-head record is tied, then division record will be the next tiebreaker.

-In the event of a tie for the division championship or a Wild Card spot, a one-game playoff will break the tie. If three or four clubs are tied for first place in a division at the end of the regular season, and the two non-division winners would NOT be Wild Card clubs, a playoff will be played among the teams in question.

-If two Clubs are tied for both Wild Card berths, home-field advantage will be determined by the head-to-head record between the tied Clubs. If the head-to-head record is tied, then division record will be the next tiebreaker.

() - A team's Elimination Number is determined by adding the leading team's number of wins to the trailing team's number of losses. Subtract that total from 163. The first-place team's Magic Number is the same as the second-place team's Elimination Number.
                  (E) - A team has been eliminated from the division race. Note that a team eliminated from the division race may still be a contender in the Wild-card race.
                  x - Clinched division title
                  y - Clinched wild-card
                  z - Clinched playoff berth

                        • MLB betting cheat sheet and odds: Bucking the trend at Coors

The San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies will undoubtedly be looking at huge totals during their three-game weekend series at Coors Field.

Our MLB cheat sheet breaks down the best MLB betting notes so you can handicap every series like a pro this weekend, including the Padres and Rockies who have had an interesting recent history at baseball's offensive wonderland.

                          Bucking the Trend at Coors

The San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies will undoubtedly be looking at huge totals during their three-game weekend series at Coors Field. But bettors should consider the teams’ recent history in Colorado; after combining to score 38 runs in their first two meetings of the season, the teams have gone 0-3-1 O/U in their next four games at Coors. The Padres have been a decent low-total play of late, going 2-4 O/U in their last six games. The Rockies are coming off a wild series in Arizona that saw the teams play to the Over in all three games, scoring a combined 53 runs.

                          Not-so-Sub Mariners

The hottest team in baseball can be found in the Pacific Northwest. The Seattle Mariners have surged back into the American League playoff race after reeling off eight consecutive victories - the last three coming against the Los Angeles Angels, who managed just a pair of runs in the series. Solid pitching has been the key to the winning streak for the Mariners, who are 0-3-1 O/U in their last four games and haven’t allowed more than three runs in any game during the run. They’ll look to keep the good times going against the visiting Houston Astros, who have lost six of eight.

                          Armed and Dangerous

No Stephen Strasburg? No problem at all for the Washington Nationals, who have used sensational pitching performances to close in on clinching the National League East title. The Nats have won eight of 10 games heading into Friday’s opener of a three-game set in Atlanta, and have been particularly stingy of late, allowing two runs or fewer in four of their last five contests. Washington is 0-6-1 O/U in its last seven, but might struggle to extend that streak of low totals against an Atlanta team that has played to the Over in eight of its last nine games.

                          Injury Updates

                          * The Mariners continue to march into the AL wild card picture despite being without veteran first baseman Adam Lind, who is out indefinitely with a finger injury. Seattle has won all three games since losing Lind, and are 4-1 in his absence so far this season.

                          * Cincinnati may wind up as one of the top Over plays of the season, but things have gone differently with speedy outfielder Billy Hamilton out of the lineup. The Reds are 3-7 O/U in 10 games since losing Hamilton to an oblique injury; despite this, they’re still 76-59-10 O/U on the season.

                          Hitting Notes

                          * Jose Abreu’s solo home run provided the lone offense for the Chicago White Sox in a 2-1 loss to Cleveland on Thursday. Abreu has been red-hot since the All-Star break, slashing .336/.385/.547 with 12 homers and 42 RBIs in just 223 second-half at-bats.

                          * Arizona SS Jean Segura was the catalyst for the Diamondbacks’ three-game sweep of Colorado, blasting four homers among his eight hits in the series. The Diamondbacks came into the series just 5-6 SU in games in which Segura had gone deep.

                          Pitching Notes

                          * Chris Archer has some work to do in order to finish as anything other than the worst money pitcher in baseball. The Tampa Bay right-hander has been abysmal for the majority of the season, having lost 1,455 units entering Friday’s start against the host Baltimore Orioles.

                          * Chicago Cubs ace Jake Arrieta hasn’t been a great money starter, but he has been a sensational parlay heading into Saturday’s encounter with the visiting Milwaukee Brewers. The Win-Under combo has hit in 15 of Arrieta’s 28 starts so far this season, with the Cubs 19-9 in those games.

                          Totals Trend

Kansas City Royals games have been a lot of fun for fans of offense. Kansas City enters a four-game series with the Chicago White Sox having gone a stunning 16-2-1 O/U in its last 19 games.

                          • Friday's Diamond Notes
                            September 16, 2016

Hottest team: Mariners (8-0 last eight)

Seattle is heating up at the right time with consecutive road sweeps over Oakland and Los Angeles to move two games behind Baltimore in the AL Wild Card race. In five wins on their recent road swing, Seattle’s pitching stepped up by allowing two runs or less, while each starting pitcher tossed at least six innings. The Mariners have won six straight home openers as they host the struggling Astros tonight at Safeco Field. Felix Hernandez heads to the mound as the Mariners are a perfect 5-0 in his past five home starts since the All-Star break.

Coldest team: Royals (2-6 last eight)

The last thing Kansas City could afford against Oakland was to lose a home series. It was worse. The Royals were outscored 43-12 by the Athletics in a four-game sweep as the defending champions fell six games out in the AL Wild Card race. Kansas City has dropped eight of its past nine home contests, but is 5-1 this season at home against the White Sox with the lone loss coming in extra innings. Ian Kennedy looks to stop Kansas City’s losing ways as the Royals have won six of his past seven starts, including a road triumph over the White Sox in his last outing.

Hottest pitcher: Corey Kluber, Indians (16-9, 3.05 ERA)

Kluber has rebounded from a disappointing 2015 season by returning to his Cy Young form of 2014 as Cleveland is 8-1 in the right-hander’s last nine starts. Since the beginning of June, the Indians have won seven of Kluber’s past eight home outings as he looks to bounce back from a loss in his previous start at Progressive Field against Houston. In two starts against Detroit this season, Kluber has allowed one earned runs in 17 innings of work, while striking out 17 batters in a pair of victories.

Coldest pitcher: Ryan Vogelsong, Pirates (3-5, 4.66 ERA)

Pittsburgh isn’t technically out of the playoff race, but time is running out on the underachieving Pirates. Vogelsong is winless in his last three starts, while allowing 16 earned runs in 13 innings, including six earned runs in four innings of an 8-0 loss to Cincinnati his last time out. Vogelsong faces the Reds once again tonight in Cincinnati as the Pirates have slumped to a 4-13 record in the past 17 games.

                            Biggest UNDER run:
                            Nationals (6-0-1 last seven)

Washington and Atlanta are playing their fourth series since the start of August and each of their meetings have seen plenty of runs. Each of the past 10 matchups have flown OVER the total, while the Nationals put up at least six runs in each of the four games at Turner Field last month. However, Washington is riding a nice UNDER run as six of the past seven contests have stayed UNDER the total, while allowing two runs or less in four of the past five games. Five of the previous seven starts by Max Scherzer have finished UNDER the total as the former Cy Young winner takes the mound in Atlanta.

Biggest OVER run: Rockies (5-2 last seven)

Colorado’s pitching has gone south recently, allowing 34 runs in a three-game sweep at the hands of Arizona earlier this week. None of Colorado’s starting pitchers lasted longer than the fifth inning in the Diamondbacks series, while the Rockies gave up double-digit runs four times on their recent road trip. Three of the past four matchups at Coors Field between the Rockies and Padres have finished UNDER the total, as a pitcher’s duel is expected tonight. Tyler Chatwood has beaten San Diego three times this season, while Padres’ southpaw Christian Friedrich has given up one run in 13 innings against Colorado.

Matchup to watch: Cardinals vs. Giants

San Francisco created a bit of breathing room in the NL Wild Card standings after cruising past St. Louis last night, 6-2 in the opener of their four-game set at AT&T Park. Johnny Cueto tossed a complete game victory for the Giants to help them bounce back from a three-game sweep by the Padres earlier this week. San Francisco leads New York by one game and St. Louis by two games in the Wild Card race as the Giants and Cardinals continue their series tonight.

Matt Moore heads to the mound for San Francisco this evening, coming off a stellar performance at Arizona his last time out by striking out 11 batters in seven innings of a 5-3 triumph. The Giants have won three of Moore’s last four starts, but San Francisco has won consecutive games at home just twice since the All-Star break. The Cardinals have lost four of their past five contests, while scoring two runs or less in each of their last four defeats. Luke Weaver tries to turn things around for St. Louis, as the Cardinals’ right-hander has provided quality starts in three of his past four trips to the hill.

                            Betcha didn’t know:
The Red Sox provided plenty of excitement on Thursday night by erasing a late 5-1 deficit to shock the Yankees, 7-5 on Hanley Ramirez’s three-run walk-off home run. Clay Buchholz looks to keep up Boston’s momentum tonight against New York, but it won’t be easy. The Red Sox are 0-5 in Buchholz’s last five starts against the Bronx Bombers since 2014, but he hasn’t started against the Yankees this season.

Biggest public favorite: Nationals (-240) at Braves

Biggest public underdog: Cardinals (+110) at Giants

Biggest line move: Astros (+135 to +115) at Mariners

                            • LEADING OFF: Tigers chase Tribe; M's go for 9th straight
                              September 16, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                              NOT DONE YET

Making a fierce charge in the wild-card race, the Mariners go for their ninth consecutive victory when they send ace Felix Hernandez (11-5) to the mound against AL West rival Houston. Hernandez is 7-1 with a 4.22 ERA in his last 11 starts since returning from the disabled list July 20. Collin McHugh (10-10) seeks his fourth straight win for the Astros. He is 8-3 in his career against Seattle, including 3-0 this season with a 1.50 ERA.

One day after wrapping up the NL Central crown, the Cubs plan to celebrate following their Wrigley Field matinee against Milwaukee. It might be a bit anticlimactic, but they took all the drama out of the division race long ago. ''This is just the first step,'' manager Joe Maddon said. ''I mean, we have much larger baseball fish to fry in our skillet.''

Chicago (93-53) wasted a chance to clinch on its own Thursday night, losing 5-4 to the Brewers. But about 90 minutes later, St. Louis' 6-2 loss in San Francisco completed the Cubs' season-long dominance of the division. Wrigley Field was just about empty when the final out was made on the West Coast, yet a loud cheer and chants went up in the neighborhood around the iconic ballpark. Several people honked their car horns.

                              ROYAL FLUSH

The defending World Series champions are fading fast. Kansas City was just outscored 43-12 at home during a four-game sweep by an Oakland team that was running last in the AL West when it arrived in town. Ian Kennedy (11-9) tries to get the Royals back on track when they host Chris Sale (15-8, 3.03 ERA) and the White Sox. Kennedy is 5-0 with a 2.16 ERA since the start of August.

                              SECOND CHANCES

Arizona right-hander Zack Greinke (12-6) gets another shot at the NL West-leading Dodgers. Greinke was rocked by his former teammates for eight runs and nine hits - including five homers - the last time he faced them in Los Angeles.
