Hottest team: Marlins (8-2 last 10)
The Marlins have pulled off a pair of extra-inning victories in Philadelphia to improve to 4-1 since the All-Star break. Christian Yelich’s late heroics helped maintain a one-game edge on the Mets for the National League’s second Wild Card, so it’s important for the Fish to stay hot since they’ll return to South Florida this weekend to welcome in New York for a crucial three-game set. Yelich has hit safely in eight of his last nine games, including six straight, going 13-for-37 with two homers and 9 RBI in that span. Miami has won five of Wei-Yin Chen’s last six starts and is favored (-130) on the road against Jeremy Hellickson. A matinee against the Phillies is on tap for tomorrow and the Marlins will be looking for at least one more win to clinch consecutive road series victories for the first time since late April. Miami is also looking to clinch three straight series conquests for just the second time all season

    Coldest team: Rangers (2-8 last 10, 4-13 last 17)
The Rangers began this dreadful run they’re on when the Yankees broke off a six-run ninth inning on June 29. Didi Gregorius hit a walk-off homer to deliver one of the season’s most improbable losses. Texas had won the first two games in that series, but lost the next day and hasn’t won a series since. The fact the Rangers have played the lowly Twins twice and are in danger of getting swept in Anaheim tells you how bad it has been as the pitching has largely imploded and the defense has regressed over the past few weeks. Houston and Seattle have struggled as well, so Texas’ lead remains healthier than it otherwise would be, but things could get worse since its road trip continues this weekend in Kansas City. The Rangers have dropped 10 of 13 on the road and will look to avoid being swept for the first time since May 16-18 in Oakland, sending Martin Perez (7-6, 4.05) to the mound against Hector Santiago (7-4, 4.27). Perez has allowed 17 runs (12 earned) over his last two starts, so you can understand the L.A. Angels (-138) being favored to win for the 10th time in 12 contests.

Hottest pitcher: Carlos Carrasco (6-3, 2.49 ERA)
Carrasco is still under .500 in his six-year career, but definitely looks like the elite pitcher scouts felt he’d turn into when he was plucked out of Venezuela as a 16-year-old. The Tribe has won five of his last six starts and is 10-3 when Carrasco has taken the mound this season. He’s exhibited great control and the ability to get a strikeout or a double play when he needs it. The Royals have hit the ball hard against him this season, but Carrasco is 6-5 with a 3.63 ERA against Kansas City over his career, which includes a 5-2 mark and 3.02 ERA at Kauffman Stadium. The Indians are favored (-135) to win the rubber match of this three-game set against the Royals, who counter with Ian Kennedy (6-7, 3.86).

Coldest pitcher: Chris Archer (4-13, 4.68 ERA)
Archer’s stock has never been lower. He’s already matched his career-high in losses set in 2015. His ERA is higher than it ended in his rookie year and he’s already given up more home runs (20) through the first four months of 2016 than he had in any of his previous four seasons. Considering he’ll be pitching at Denver’s Coors Field for the first time, Archer’s propensity for surrendering the long ball should be disconcerting. He’s given up home runs in 10 of his last 13 starts, which includes eight of 10 on the road. Tampa Bay has failed to win any of his last seven starts and is 1-10 in his last 11. Colorado (-115) is a slight favorite against the Rays despite losing last night’s game in blowout fashion. Lefty Jorge De La Rosa (6-6, 5.50) will pitch for the Rockies. Only Mark Reynolds and Brandon Barnes have faced Archer in the majors.

Biggest UNDER run: Tigers (8-1 last nine)
Detroit managed a single hit off Tommy Milone entering last night's ninth inning and saw James McCann and Jose Iglesias strike out with the bases loaded in a 6-2 loss. As a result, the under struck again as the Tigers were held to four runs or fewer for the 11th time in 12 games. Miguel Cabrera is on a 4-for-25 run at the plate, while Victor Martinez is on a 3-for-33 streak. Despite those struggles, the Tigers are heavily favored as they (-174) send Justin Verlander (9-6, 3.91) to the mound for this matinee series finale against Minnesota, who will count on Ervin Santana (3-8, 4.12) coming off a wrist ailment.

Biggest OVER run: Dodgers (7-2 last nine road games)
Chase Utley got the party started in DC by hitting the third pitch he saw from rookie Reynaldo Lopez out of Nationals Park, sparking a three-run first inning in an 8-4 win. L.A.'s victorious return to the East Coast was fueled by its bats as it continues a run of high-scoring road games by banging out 13 hits. Every starter besides pitcher Scott Kazmir got a hit. The Dodgers have actually banged out double-digit hit totals in every game they've played since the All-Star break, running their streak of doing so to five games. Washington lefty Gio Gonzalez (5-8, 4.70) will look to slow the Dodgers down and has won two of his last three starts after a dreadful two-month run. L.A. will turn to Bud Norris (5-7, 4.17) for his fourth start since it traded for him. Two of the three starts he's made for the Dodgers have gone over the posted total.

Matchup to watch: Giants at Red Sox
Despite a four-game losing coming out of the break, San Francisco still owns the best record in baseball. Meanwhile, Boston has a chance to pass Baltimore for first place in the AL East with a victory and additional help from the Yankees. The Red Sox will break out their newest toy as lefty Drew Pomeranz (8-7, 2.47) makes his first start since being acquired from San Diego. The All-Star has allowed one run over his last three starts, a span of 21 innings, and will be seeing the Giants for the fourth time this season, owning an 0-2 mark despite a 2.60 ERA due to a lack of run support. Matt Cain (1-5, 5.34) is making his first start since June 13 and only his second appearance since May 27 due to hamstring trouble, so this will be a big night for San Francisco as it hopes to rely on him in the rotation going forward. The Giants were shut out for only the fifth time this season last night and are 2-2 coming off games in which they’ve been blanked. Boston (-195) is a heavy favorite despite an unsettled bullpen situation since Koji Uehara left yesterday’s game with a pectoral injury, likely leaving the closer’s role in the hands of the recently acquired Brad Ziegler, who recorded 18 saves in Arizona but has been used as a set-up guy since arriving earlier this month.

Betcha didn’t know: St. Louis should be aware that the Padres are unbeaten in doubleheaders this season, sweeping a pair from the Cubs on May 11. Keep that in mind since they were heavy underdogs that day too, cashing +220 in the opener and +180 in the nightcap. More than two months later, Rea will be starting another twinbill opener, but that's where the similarities end. Pomeranz started the second game and won a 1-0 pitcher's duel over John Lackey and is now in Boston. Fernando Rodney saved both wins in Chicago and finds himself in Miami, traded there June 30. Ex-Marlins starter Paul Clemens (1-0, 4.73) will take the ball for the second game against the Cardinals, following Rea and making his first start for San Diego after three relief appearances since being claimed off waivers late last month. Clemens was pitching for New Orleans, Miami's Triple-A affiliate, on May 11. Rotation mainstays Carlos Martinez and Jaime Garcia will pitch for the Cards.

Biggest public favorite: Blue Jays (-160) at Diamondbacks

Biggest public underdog: Phillies (+110) vs. Marlins

Biggest line move: Yankees (-130 to -160) vs. Orioles

          • 2016 MLB Trade Deadline Rumors: The Indians' deadline to-do list may be growing

The 2016 non-waiver trade deadline is less than two weeks away now. We've already seen a handful of trades go down in recent weeks, most notably involving James Shields and Drew Pomeranz, and you can be sure many more moves are on the way.
To help you keep track of all the rumors and rumblings, we'll log the day's buzz right here, so make sure you check back often for the latest updates.

            Tribe in outfield market?

            Update: 7:47 pm ET
The Indians got some troubling news on rehabbing outfielder Michael Brantley on Tuesday. Brantley's trying to work his way back from offseason shoulder surgery, and now he's slated for an MRI after possibly suffering a setback.
This is concerning because Brantley is currently on his second DL stint of the season for this very issue. He underwent surgery in November of last year, and the Indians activated him on April 25. By May 14, though, he was back on the disabled list with inflammation in that surgically repaired shoulder. He's logged just 43 plate appearances on the season. Brantley's been outstanding over the last two seasons, so he's missed by the Indians, even as they pace the AL Central.
Obviously, the results of the MRI could show no evidence of a setback, and it's worth noting that Brantley was showing good progress before this latest wrinkle. However, there's no doubt that his recovery from surgery has been anything but smooth.
Cleveland has fared just fine so far, but moving forward, Rajai Davis and Tyler Naquin are regression candidates. As well, Marlon Byrd was of course suspended for 162 games in early June.
If the news is not good on Brantley, then perhaps an outfielder will be added to Cleveland's deadline to-do list. There's not much in the way of specific scuttle on this front, but outfield trade candidates commonly bandied about include Jay Bruce, Josh Reddick, Carlos Gonzalez, Charlie Blackmon, Melvin Upton, and Ryan Braun. It's always possible, of course, that the Indians' front office will opt to go status quo in the outfield and focus on bolstering the bullpen.

            Twins, Red Sox talked trade

            Update: 4:04pm ET
The Twins and Red Sox have talked trades in recent weeks but "aren't a great match at this point," reports Mike Berardino of the Pioneer Press. There had been chatter in recent weeks that the BoSox could pursue Ervin Santana, though the Drew Pomeranz pickup lessens their need for rotation help. The Red Sox are clearly buyers while the last place Twins figure to look to trade away veterans at the deadline. Minnesota fired GM Terry Ryan on Monday.

Indians willing to make big move?

            Update: 3:59pm ET
Rival teams believe the Indians are more open to making a blockbuster trade now than they have been in previous years, reports ESPN's Jerry Crasnick. We buy this rumor, for what it's worth. The first place Indians are looking for a shutdown lefty reliever and have been connected to Andrew Miller. They certainly have the prospects and the motivation to made a big trade; Cleveland has been to the postseason once since 2007, and that was a Wild Card game loss in 2013.

            Rangers scouting Yankees

            Update: 2:20pm ET
According to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, the Rangers are scouting several Yankees players in advance of the trade deadline, including Ivan Nova, Nathan Eovaldi, and even CC Sabathia. They've reportedly expressed interest in Andrew Miller as well. Grant says everyone is asking the Rangers for either Joey Gallo or Jurickson Profar, and while they're not untouchable, they come with a high price tag.

Yanks going 'full bore' into market

            Update: 2:16pm ET
The Yankees are going "full bore" into shaping trades for Aroldis Chapman and others prior to the trade deadline, reports ESPN's Buster Olney. Team ownership is reportedly still on the fence about selling off veterans -- the Yankees have won two straight but are still five games back of a Wild Card spot -- but the baseball operations department is putting themselves in position to swing some deals should they get the green light.

            Yanks scouting Indians' prospects
            Update: 1:20pm ET
According to ESPN's Keith Law, the Yankees had two scouts on hand to see left-hander and top Indians pitching prospect Justus Sheffield pitch Tuesday afternoon. He struck out eight in 6 2/3 scoreless innings (box score). Cleveland is said to have interest in Andrew Miller, so it makes sense that the Yankees would be scouting their High Class-A affiliate. The Indians have many top prospects there even aside from Sheffield.

Indians reluctant to trade for catcher
            Update: 12:01pm ET
Despite losing catcher Yan Gomes to a shoulder injury for 1-2 months, the Indians are reluctant to trade for a catcher, reports Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. The team plans to go with Chris Gimenez and Roberto Perez behind the plate for the time being. It had been speculated the Indians could pursue Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy even before Gomes got hurt.

Marlins working to add a starter
            Update: 11:50am ET
The Marlins are working to add a starting pitcher before the deadline, reports MLB.com's Jon Morosi. Among their targets are Phillies righty Jeremy Hellickson, Padres righty Andrew Cashner, and Yankees righty Michael Pineda. Hellickson and Cashner are rentals while Pineda would remain under team control as an arbitration-eligible player in 2017. The Marlins have a one-game lead over the Mets for the second Wild Card spot at the moment.

            Nats interested in Blackmon

            Update: 11:29am ET
According to MLB.com's Jon Morosi, the Nationals are showing interest in Rockies center fielder Charlie Blackmon. They're looking for an upgrade over Ben Revere in both center field and the leadoff spot. Blackmon, 30, is one of the game's most consistently underrated players. He's hitting .305/.368/.481 (108 OPS+) with 12 homers and 10 steals in 2016, and owns a 106 OPS+ since becoming a regular in 2013. That said, Blackmon has been way better at home in Coors Field (.916 OPS) than on the road (.790) this year.

            Rangers getting calls about Profar
            Update: 11:22am ET
The Rangers are receiving a "ton of calls" about infielder Jurickson Profar, reports MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan. The Rays are among the teams showing the most interest. Profar, who is still only 23, is hitting .318/.366/.455 (114 OPS+) with four homers in 40 games as a supersub this season. He missed the entire 2014-15 seasons with shoulder trouble. Profar was the best prospect in baseball a few years ago, and given his age, it's no surprise teams hope to acquire his talent despite the shoulder woes.

            Cashner drawing interest

            Update: 10:14am ET
Padres righty Andrew Cashner is "drawing trade interest (from) a surprising number of clubs," reports Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. One of those clubs is the Rangers. Cashner, 29, is 4-7 with a 5.05 ERA (78 OPS+) in 14 starts and 67 2/3 innings around hamstring and neck injuries this year. His underlying stats (5.12 FIP) aren't any better. Cashner will be a free agent after the season, so he's a pure rental.

            Pirates doing due diligence

            Update: 10:14am ET
Pirates GM Neal Huntington told Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review he is doing his "due diligence" for all parts of the roster, but acknowledged the pitching staff needs the most help. "We're doing due diligence on all fronts, but the pitching is what seems to need the most help at this point unless we're willing to go with what we've got internally," said Huntington.

            Dodgers open to trading Puig
            Update: 10:06am ET
According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Dodgers are open to trading outfielder Yasiel Puig. We buy this rumor. Puig, who is still only 25, is hitting .257/.321/.379 (91 OPS+) with seven homers in 75 games around a hamstring injury this year. It's by far his worst MLB season to date on a rate basis.

                July 21, 2016

BOSTON (AP) Hanley Ramirez homered three times and drove in a career-high six runs and the Boston Red Sox held on for a 11-7 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night even though newly acquired starter Drew Pomeranz struggled to protect an eight-run lead.

Boston won for the eighth time in nine games and moved into first place in the AL East, a half-game ahead of the Baltimore Orioles.

Ramirez also reached base when he was hit by a pitch in the fourth, glowering at Giants reliever Albert Suarez before the umpire quickly warned both benches. With the crowd chanting Ramirez's name for his final at-bat in the eighth, he grounded out weakly to the pitcher.

Ramirez began the day with eight home runs this season before connecting for his first three-homer game. He hit two-run drives in the second, third and sixth inning. The major league record for home runs in a game is four. It's been done 16 times, most recently by Josh Hamilton for Texas in 2012.

Travis Shaw and Sandy Leon also homered for Boston, and Mookie Betts had three hits.

Matt Barnes (3-3) was awarded the victory as the first effective Red Sox pitcher, coming on with a one-run lead and the bases loaded in the sixth and pitching out of it.

Giants starter Matt Cain (1-6) gave up three homers and five runs in 2 1/3 innings.

                CUBS 6, METS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Anthony Rizzo homered twice off Bartolo Colon, Kyle Hendricks pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings and Chicago beat New York to take two of three in the rematch of last year's NL Championship Series.

Rizzo pulled a slider to right for a solo homer in the third. Two innings later with a runner on, he sent a fastball into the right-field bleachers.

Rizzo also hit a two-run homer Monday in a victory as the Cubs rebounded from a four-game sweep in New York this month. Chicago has won five of its last seven overall.

Hendricks (9-6) gave up seven hits and hasn't allowed an earned run in his last three appearances. He lowered his ERA to 2.27, third best in the majors.

Colon (8-5) gave up six runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings. Wilmer Flores hit his fifth home run in eight games, a two-run drive off Travis Wood in the eighth.

                CARDINALS 4, PADRES 2, 1ST GAME

                CARDINALS 3, PADRES 2, 2ND GAME

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jedd Gyorko homered for the fifth straight game off San Diego pitching, connecting twice and driving in all three RBIs in a 3-2 victory to give St. Louis a doubleheader sweep.

Gyorko, dealt by the Padres in the offseason for outfielder Jon Jay, is 13 for 21 (.619) against his old team with six homers and 10 RBIs. He has 11 homers and 27 RBIs on the year with 40 starts spread across the infield. He started at third base in both games of the doubleheader.

He has four consecutive three-hit games against San Diego and four career multi-homer games, with both long balls in Game 2 off Paul Clemens (1-1).

Carlos Martinez (9-6) was dominant after a shaky first inning and a nosebleed in the second, and the Cardinals took the opener 4-2. Gyorko, Matt Holliday and Yadier Molina homered off Colin Rea (5-4).

Ryan Schimpf homered in both games for San Diego.

Jaime Garcia (7-6) allowed a run in 5 2-3 innings in the second game, and Seung Hwan Oh earned his fourth save in five chances, and second of the day.

                NATIONALS 8, DODGERS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Bryce Harper led an offensive outburst with a home run into the third deck in right field and Washington beat Los Angeles.

Harper's 20th home run of the season, a two-run blast, traveled an estimated 451 feet off Bud Norris in the first inning. The National League MVP later walked and scored on Wilson Ramos' RBI double.

Ben Revere, Jayson Werth and Anthony Rendon also hit home runs and Trea Turner had an RBI triple and stole home for Washington. Gio Gonzalez (6-8) had one of his best starts of the season, allowing one run on three hits and striking out six in six innings.

Norris (5-8) gave up six runs on seven hits in five-plus innings before giving way to the bullpen.

                INDIANS 11, ROYALS 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Tyler Naquin hit two of the Indians' five homers and had a career-high six RBIs, helping Cleveland rout Kansas City.

Carlos Carrasco (7-3) only allowed one hit in six shutout innings, a one-out double by Cheslor Cuthbert in the fourth walked two in the sixth for his only other baserunners.

Naquin had his first multi-homer game, while Mike Napoli went deep for the second straight day. Jason Kipnis and Carlos Santana also hit home runs.

The first four homers were off Ian Kennedy (6-8), whose bizarre line included eight strikeouts and only one walk. But it was the ninth straight game Kennedy has served up a homer, and he has allowed 26 of them this season, tied with teammate Chris Young for most in the majors.

                BLUE JAYS 10, DIAMONDBACKS 4

PHOENIX (AP) - Josh Donaldson and Edwin Encarnacion each hit two-run homers and Toronto beat Arizona.

Donaldson's homer off Patrick Corbin (4-9) landed in the Chase Field swimming pool in the first inning. Encarnacion's soaring shot off Daniel Hudson, projected at 471 feet, landed far down the walkway beyond the left field seats in the eighth. It was Encarnacion's 26th home run of the season and ninth in his last eight games at Chase.

Marcus Stroman (8-4) allowed only an unearned run on eight hits in eight innings to help the Blue Jays sweep the two-game series. Tuffy Gosewisch hit a three-run homer in the ninth for Arizona.

                TWINS 4, TIGERS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Max Kepler and Eddie Rosario homered off Francisco Rodriguez in the ninth and Minnesota Twins scored three runs in the inning to beat Detroit.

Detroit wasted a fine start by Justin Verlander, who gave up a run and two hits in eight innings. Rodriguez (1-1) retired the first two batters of the ninth before Kepler sent a drive to right field to break the 1-all tie. Rodriguez then made a throwing error and appeared to be shaken up, but after a conference at the mound he stayed in the game and allowed a two-run shot by Rosario.

Ryan Pressly (3-5) was the winner, and Brandon Kintzler pitched the ninth for his sixth save.

Minnesota's Joe Mauer and Detroit's Ian Kinsler homered in the first inning.

                YANKEES 5, ORIOLES 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Michael Pineda pitched six innings, Mark Teixeira homered in his return from his latest injury, and New York beat Baltimore to move two games above .500 for the first time since April.

Pineda (4-9) had six strikeouts with runners in scoring position and didn't allow a run for the first time all season. New York has won the first three of the four-game series to improve to 38-36 - the last time the Yankees were two games over .500 was April 12 when they were 4-2.

A stomach bug has been ravaging Baltimore's clubhouse and claimed two more victims in third baseman Manny Machado and manager Buck Showalter. Bench coach John Russell filled in for Showalter. First baseman Chris Davis missed his third straight game with flu-like symptoms.

Yovani Gallardo (3-2) was the loser.

                MARINERS 6, WHITE SOX 5, 11 INNINGS

SEATTLE (AP) - Leonys Martin hit his second home run of the game, a solo shot with one out in the 11th inning that sent Seattle past Chicago.

Martin hit a two-run drive in the second inning. He then drove an 0-2 pitch from Dan Jennings (3-2) over the wall in right for his 13th homer.

Vidal Nuno (1-1) pitched one inning for the victory. Seattle pulled to 5-4 on Mike Zunino's two-run homer in seventh, and tied it on Adam Lind's solo shot in the eighth.

Seattle ace Felix Hernandez, activated off the disabled list earlier in the day, allowed five runs on 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out two and walked two in his first start since May 27.

Todd Frazier hit a three-run homer in the first off Hernandez. Frazier's 28th home run tied him for the major league lead with Baltimore's Mark Trumbo.

                REDS 6, BRAVES 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Tucker Barnhart and Joey Votto hit two-run homers, and Cincinnati rallied to beat Atlanta to win the season series between the NL's worst teams.

Barnhart's homer completed a four-run rally in the sixth off Lucas Harrell (1-2). Votto extended his post-All Star break surge with his 16th homer off Ian Krol in the seventh. Votto is 11 for 20 in the last six games with two homers, a double and six walks.

Anthony DeSclafani (5-0) kept up his streak of solid starts since returning from a strained oblique that sidelined him for most of the first half. The right-hander gave up eight hits, including Freddie Freeman's homer, in eight innings. DeSclafani is 5-0 in his last six starts with a 2.61 ERA.

Adonis Garcia led off the ninth with a homer off Ross Ohlendorf, the 68th homer allowed by Cincinnati's bullpen - by far the most in the majors.

                PHILLIES 4, MARLINS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jeremy Hellickson struck out eight in eight innings, Tyler Goeddel hit a two-run homer and Philadelphia beat Miami.

Hellickson (7-7) allowed one run and five hits, improving his value as the Aug. 1 trade deadline approaches. Miami's Wei-Yin Chen (5-4) gave up four runs and 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Chris Johnson hit a solo homer in the fifth for the Marlins.

Goeddel snapped an 0-for-16 slump with an opposite-field shot to right to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead in the first. He lined an RBI single to right to make it 3-0 in the second.

Jeanmar Gomez finished for his 26th save in 29 tries.

                ASTROS 7, ATHLETICS 0

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Doug Fister pitched seven innings and Jose Altuve continued his torrid hitting to help Houston beat Oakland.

After losing three of his last four decisions, Fister (10-6) threw seven innings of four-hit ball and struck out five. The A's failed to advance a runner past second base against Fister.

Altuve was 2 for 3 with two walks. Baseball's leading hitter is 12 for his last 17 in his last four games. The Astros, who had lost three of their previous four, scored two runs in the second with two outs and nobody on base when five batters reached safely against A's starter Daniel Mengden (1-5).

                ANGELS 7, RANGERS 4

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jefry Marte hit a three-run homer and the Angels shut down a late rally by the AL West-leading Texas Rangers for a win that gave Los Angeles a three-game sweep.

It was the second straight sweep for the Angels, who won their sixth in a row and moved out of last place in the AL West.

Hector Santiago (8-4) pitched five innings for his third straight win.

Martin Perez (7-7) lost his third decision in as many games.

                RAYS 11, ROCKIES 3

DENVER (AP) - Chris Archer struck out 11 over six innings for his first victory since June 6, Tim Beckham had a career-high five hits and Tampa Bay routed Colorado.

Evan Longoria kept up his hot hitting with two doubles to help the Rays take two of three to capture their first road series since June 6-8 at Arizona.

Archer (5-13) allowed two runs and four hits to halt a slide in which he had lost six of seven starts.

Jorge De La Rosa (6-7) lasted only four innings and gave up nine runs, seven of them earned.

                BREWERS 9, PIRATES 5.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Jonathan Lucroy had a two-run single in the sixth inning and finished with three RBIs in Milwaukee's victory over Pittsburgh.

Jonathan Villar, Hernan Perez and Ryan Braun had two hits each for Milwaukee and Chris Carter and Scooter Gennett drove in two runs apiece while the Brewers jumped on starter Jeff Locke (8-6).

Carlos Torres (2-1) won in relief of Chase Anderson, who struggled once again but was bailed out by an offense that took it to Locke (8-6).

                  -- Louisville, Virginia, Arizona-- 20-1

-- Indiana, Xavier 25-1-- Musketeers starting to gain national recognition.

                  **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

                  13) Mariners 6, White Sox 5 (11)-- Can't remember ever seeing a pitcher, umpire go at it over balls/strikes in first inning of a game. Plate ump Andy Fletcher blatantly missed a 3-2 pitch to Justin Morneau that put two on with two out in the first inning, and Hernandez let him have it, with Fletcher taking off his mask and yelling back.

When Todd Frazier hit the next pitch for a 3-run homer, Felix' return from the DL was off to a very bad start.

                  12) RIP Garry Marshall-- A TV genius in the 70s and also a movie maker, he passed away this week at age 81. Odd Couple, Happy Days, Laverne/Shirley, Runaway Bride, just some of Marshall's handiwork. RIP, sir.

                  11) New Orleans Saints rookies are already in training camp at Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia- their first regular season game isn't until September 11th.

                  10) James Loney got thrown out at the plate in top of 4th inning with Mets down 3-0 Wednesday, but replays showed he was safe, but the Mets never challenged the call. No bueno. Some teams have much better replay coaches than others.

                  9) So I spent much of Wednesday and will spend all day today at the adidas Uprising basketball tournament in downtown Las Vegas; saw lot of good games last night, lot of good players. Seven games going on at once under one roof in the Cashman Center, a convention center next to the ballpark where the Mets' AAA team plays.

                  8) Very well-run event; good officials, a main court where the game is shown on a big screen on the wall, comfortable place to watch kids play ball. Lot of the coaches you see on TV all winter were there to recruit- this is the last part of this recruiting season.

Player of the Game is brought to a platform where he is interviewed on camera, which is a good prep for when he goes to college and meets the press.

                  7) With seven games going on at once, how do you choose which game to watch? If you want to see elite players, you look at which big-name coaches are watching each game. If Tom Izzo and Lon Kruger are at one court, thats a good place to be.

If you just want to be comfortable, then pick one spot, stay there and hope the games on that court turn out to be good ones. There are so many good players, the games I saw were mostly all hard-fought, competitive games.

                  6) For kids playing this week, their goal is to get a college scholarship, or land one at as good a basketball program as possible.

One way not to get a scholarship is this: Your team is up 3 with 0:57 left, shot clock is at 0:19-- ball is reversed to you and you quickly jack up a 3-pointer, when the play is to hold the ball, milk the clock-- you can get a 3-pointer anytime.

Basketball IQ is a valuable asset to impress coaches with.

                  5) Surprisingly, the 30-second shot clock came into play a few times; you'd think in AAU games, it would be very fast-paced, but couple teams put on 1-2-2 presses and that slowed their opponents down, so the shot clock did matter.

I was talking to a high school coach from Georgia; his son had never played with a shot clock during his high school career, so this was all new to him.

                  4) A team from Virginia subbed five guys at a time, which makes it tough when a close game comes down to the wire, because which five do you play, or do you mix/match and have kids play together who haven't played together the whole game? This team got beat at the end by a Minnesota team that probably wasn't the better team.

                  3) One of my cab drivers is from Iraq; his English wasn't good, but I asked him what he thought about Donald Trump when he drove past the Trump Hotel, which is just off the Las Vegas Strip. He didn't want to answer, saying "my English isn't too good". He has only been in America three years-- he was a pleasant guy.

                  2) Had chance to talk with North Carolina assistant coach Hubert Davis for a few minutes-- terrific guy. He enjoys coaching more than he did working on ESPN-- he did not like the travel too much that came with working on television.

                  1) I'll have a lot more on this tomorrow, but championship game of this event will be Sunday at 6:00 ET on ESPNU.

Hottest team: Red Sox (10-2 last 12)
Drew Pomeranz didn’t have the debut Boston envisioned, failing to get an out in the fourth inning after being staked to an 8-0 lead against the Giants. The bats and the bullpen bailed the Red Sox out. Hanley Ramirez’s three home runs helped fuel a two-game sweep of San Francisco, which combined with New York’s third straight win over Baltimore, moved Boston into first place in the AL East. Over their current run, the Red Sox have won every time they score at least four runs, averaging 7.2 runs over their 10 victories. A nine-game homestand at Fenway continues with Minnesota coming into town for a four-game set, and even though the Twins come off consecutive wins at Detroit, they still own MLB’s worst road record (15-30). Steven Wright (11-5, 2.78 ERA) owns the lowest ERA among Red Sox starters and can catch Rick Porcello for the team lead in wins if he gets the victory here. Wright surrendered a single unearned run over 7.1 innings in an 8-1 triumph at Minnesota on June 10. Tyler Duffey (5-6, 5.23) was the losing pitcher that night, giving up six runs on 10 hits. It’s therefore no surprise to see Boston so (-220) heavily favored.

Coldest team: White Sox (1-6 last seven)
After surrendering an 11th-inning home run to Leonys Martin, the second walk-off blast they were subjected to in Seattle, the White Sox return to Chicago hoping to avoid a seventh loss in eight games. They’re in danger of falling three games under .500 for the second time, so this four-game series reeks of desperation for both teams since the Tigers come in having lost two straight against the lowly Twins to fall back in the Wild Card chase. Detroit swept the first three meetings between these teams, but dropped two of three in Chicago in mid-June. They’ll play one another 14 more times this season, so it will be interesting to see how both teams respond in this series opener. James Shields (4-11, 5.10) was brought in to help aid a playoff push, so it’s fitting that he gets the ball for Chicago with its season collapsing. After falling flat on his face by giving up 23 runs over three starts where he lasted a total of 8.2 innings, Shields has rebounded by just six runs over 28.1 innings over his last four outings.

Hottest pitcher: Chris Tillman (13-2, 3.29 ERA)
Washington’s Stephen Strasburg (13-0, 2.51) has been brilliant, but we’ll touch on his bid to stay perfect against the Dodgers down below. While the Nationals are 16-1 in Strasburg’s starts, the Orioles are 17-3 when their ace gets the ball, which includes a perfect 12-0 at home. Unfortunately, the Birds find themselves in Yankee Stadium hoping Tillman can prevent a four-game sweep that has cost them their cushion in the division. Tillman has pitched in a pair of victories over the Yanks at Camden Yards, but was hit hard in the last start on June 3 as New York homered three times and produced five runs in 5.2 innings. Tillman closed July by taking his second loss in Seattle, but is a perfect 3-0 this month, giving up just three runs in 21 innings. Tillman snapped Baltimore’s longest losing streak of the season at five games on July 5 with a 5-1 win at Dodger Stadium and will try to prevent a fifth consecutive loss here.

Coldest pitcher: Mike Pelfrey (2-9, 4.95 ERA)
Pelfrey opened July in danger of losing his spot in the rotation, but rebounded by giving the Tigers a pair of starts where the he got into the seventh inning having allowed only one run at Tampa Bay and Toronto. He then couldn’t get out of the second inning on Saturday against Kansas City, walking four of the 14 batters he faced and giving up five runs. Detroit has seen the ‘under’ prevail in nine of its last 10 game, with Pelfrey’s July 16 start serving as the anomaly. The Tigers have scored a total of four runs over the past three games and haven’t scored more than four times in a single contest since way back on July 6, so Pelfrey has little room for error in this matchup with the White Sox, who he’s 1-1 against this season.

Biggest UNDER run: Rays (10-2-2 last 14)
There’s competition here given the aforementioned Tigers run and the ‘under’ on an 8-0 steak in Orioles games, but we’ll concentrate on the Rays here since there’s a pretty good pitching matchup worth examining. Tampa Bay scored 21 runs over the past two days in victories in Colorado, but will now transition to one of the friendliest pitcher’s parks in baseball out in Oakland. Lefty Matt Moore (5-7, 4.33) has pitched in five consecutive games where the number has come in below the posted total. Meanwhile, A’s ace Sonny Gray (4-8, 5.12) is pitching to potentially earn himself a ticket out of town and on to a contender. Although his numbers are horrific, the 26-year-old righty has pitched much better of late, allowing here earned runs or fewer in six of his last eight starts. Gray gave up three homers in a 7-6 win at Tampa Bay on May 15, so we’ll see if his improved form yields better results. Oddsmakers have set this total at 8.

Biggest OVER run: Dodgers (8-2, last 10 road games)
At a time where most teams are playing lower-scoring games, this trend of the Dodgers playing high-scoring games away from Chavez Ravine continued last night after Anthony Rendon’s eighth-inning solo home run eclipsed the posted total of 8.5. Can the run continue against Strasburg? Washington’s ace has allowed no more than a single run in a game over his last four outings and has given up just five hits over 21.2 inning this month upon coming off the disabled list. This will be his first time seeing the Dodgers this season and he really doesn’t have much history against any roster member not named Chase Utley (4-for-27). No current Dodger owns a home run against him, though Adrian Gonzalez is 4-for-9 with a double. Perhaps the Nats can do the heavy lifting on an ‘over’ call against 19-year-old Julio Urias (1-2, 4.95) since they’ve blessed Strasburg with tremendous run support all season. The lowest output Washington has managed in a Strasburg start this season has been three runs and it has averaged 6.7 runs per game over his 17 starts. Urias had been pitching out of the bullpen in Triple-A before being called up to take this start, his first since surrendering five runs in just 3.1 innings on July 4 against Baltimore. Oddsmakers have set the total at 8. The WestgateLV Superbook had it available at 7.5 on Thursday morning.

Matchup to watch: Marlins at Phillies
Because all three games thus far have been tightly contested and Miami returns home for a huge three-game set against the Mets this weekend, we’ve got our eyes on this series finale. The Marlins dropped a 4-1 decision against Jeremy Hellickson and the Phillies on Wednesday night but remain one game ahead of New York and St. Louis for possession of the second NL Wild Card. The Dodgers own the first one, just one game up themselves. Although over two months remain, the Fish have to take advantage of games against inferior competition if they’re going to reach the postseason. They’re 4-8 against the lowly Braves and are just 4-5 against the Phillies entering this one. This one is going off as basically a pick’em, so we’ll see if the Marlins can rise up to avoid squandering another opportunity against a sub-.500 team. Righties Tom Koehler (6-8, 4.68) and Jerad Eickhoff (6-10, 3.76) square off. Miami’s Koehler is 0-1 against the Phils despite a 1.93 ERA over 14 innings, while Eickhoff lost at home 5-3 on May 16. He pitched six shutout innings in South Florida to win his major league debut against the Marlins last season. Philadelphia has won six of the last eight times he’s taken the mound.

Betcha didn’t know: Cardinals third-baseman Jedd Gyorko, filling in for the injured Matt Carpenter, is tormenting his former team, hitting three home runs in Wednesday's doubleheader sweep. He's 7-for-10 with four homers in the series and will be looking to join Barry Bonds and Chipper Jones as the only players ever to homer in six straight games against San Diego. The Padres are doing some thumping themselves, having gone deep in 18 straight contests, which is the National League's longest streak since 2010 (Reds). In order to extend that run, they'll have to snap Adam Wainwright's run of not allowing a homer in eight straight contests. Wil Myers homered off Wainwright (9-5, 4.15) in the first inning of a 4-1 win back on April 15, setting the tone. Padres starter Andrew Cashner (4-7, 5.05) will face his former teammate Gyorko for the first time.
