    • Red Sox, Astros close series
      April 23, 2016

BOSTON RED SOX (8-9) at HOUSTON ASTROS (6-12)

First pitch: Sunday, 8:00 p.m. ET
      Sportsbook.ag Line: Astros -140, Red Sox +120, Total 9

      Game 1 - Boston 6 Houston 2
      Game 2 - Houston 8 Boston 3

Henry Owens and the Red Sox take on Scott Feldman and the Astros in the series finale on Sunday night.

The Astros will look to take the final game of the series behind RHP Scott Feldman (0-2, 4-11 ERA, 10 SO, 7 BB in 15 1/3 innings), who is making his fourth start of the season. The 33-year-old has let up three home runs already on this young season, and he took a step back on April 19 (3 ER in 5 IP vs. the Rangers) after an excellent outing vs. the Royals (0 ER in 6 1/3 IP) on April 13. The Astros have lost all three of Feldman’s starts this season.

On the hill for John Farrell’s club will be LHP Henry Owens, who will be making his first start of the season in front of a national audience on Sunday Night Baseball. The 23-year-old wasn’t particularly impressive in his rookie campaign in 2015, going 4-4 with a 4.57 ERA in 11 starts. The 6’6” starter surrendered 62 hits in 63 innings pitched and recorded 50 strikeouts to 24 walks. The Astros don’t have any key offensive players on the disabled list. For Boston, Pablo Sandoval is on the 15-day DL, thought the former World Series MVP had been relegated to the bench before getting hurt.

Feldman has been in the league since 2005—though most of his career was spent in the American League West—so the the Red Sox have had their fair share of plate appearances against him. 2B Dustin Pedroia has teed off on Feldman, going 10-for-23 with a home run, a double and three RBIs. DH David Ortiz, in the final year of his illustrious career, has also had success against the veteran. Big Papi is 5-for-18 lifetime against Feldman with a pair of home runs, eight RBIs and three walks.

Catcher Christian Vazquez only has five career at-bats against the journeyman, but he’s seen the ball well, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs. LF Brock Holt is 3-for-6 with two doubles, a triple and an RBI against Feldman, and CF Jackie Bradley Jr. is 2-for-5.

The Astros haven’t pitched well in the first month of 2016, but they haven’t had any issue putting runs on the board. A.J. Hinch’s club can beat you in a variety of ways, as they hit a ton of home runs and steal plenty of bases. Making his first start of the season, Owens will have his hands full against this club. What’s working in Owens’ favor, however, is that no players on Houston’s roster have ever faced him. The tall lefty will bring an element of surprise, and that might throw Houston’s timing off. It’s worth noting that left-handed hitters (.293) actually hit Owens better than right-handed hitters (.248) did in 2015. First start or not, though, the Astros’ lineup is a difficult one to contend with.

Rookie 1B Tyler White has hit very well this month, as have two-time American League hits leader Jose Altuve and LF Colby Rasmus. Young stars Carlos Correa and George Springer are two of the most talented players in baseball, and while they’ve played well in April, they’re certainly capable of producing at a higher level. Two-time All-Star Carlos Gomez, who was acquired just prior to the non-waiver trade deadline last season, has gotten off to a dreadful start. If he doesn’t start hitting—or at least start showing signs of coming out of his funk—he might be in danger of losing his starting job and being forced to platoon.

      • LEADING OFF: It's deGrom for Mets, Tigers try to end skid
        April 24, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

        DEGROM RETURNS

Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom starts at Atlanta, back after missing one turn because of a sore right lat muscle and another due to health complications following the birth of his son, Jaxon.

DeGrom said his son had a form of apnea that caused him to stop breathing after falling asleep. Jaxon is doing well now, deGrom said. ''It was definitely scary,'' deGrom said. ''He had to be checked into the NICU and they had to monitor him in there but when all the tests came back and nothing was seriously wrong we were pretty relieved. But at first it was a scary time.''

        ALL SMILES

Drew Smyly is coming off consecutive 11-strikeout games and is emerging as an ace for Tampa Bay's staff. Since coming over from Detroit in a trade for David Price, Smyly is 8-5 with a 2.58 ERA in 22 starts with the Rays, including 0-2 with a 2.91 ERA this season. He opposes Michael Pineda at Yankee Stadium.

        BOUNCE BACK?

The Tigers have lost three in a row and manager Brad Ausmus kept the clubhouse closed for 30 minutes after the most recent defeat. He called it a ''discussion'' but didn't elaborate after Detroit fell for the sixth time in eight games.

The Tigers will try to get back on track when Shane Greene starts in Cleveland against Carlos Carrasco.

        NO STRESS FOR STRAS

Washington ace Stephen Strasburg (3-0, 1.25 ERA) tries to go 4-0 for the first time in his career. The right-hander will start at Nationals Park against the Twins.

        NICE IMPRESSION

Mat Latos (3-0, 0.49) is off to the best start of his career. Now in his eighth season, the White Sox newcomer has given up just one run and six hits in 18 1/3 innings over three outings. He pitches next at home against Texas.

        WELCOME BACK

Red Sox lefty Henry Owens makes his first big league start this season, pitching at night in Houston. The 23-year-old went 1-1 with a 1.00 ERA in three starts for Triple-A Pawtucket before being called up and had a 4.57 ERA in 11 starts with Boston last season.

            • Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

--Cal Bears got good news; big man Ivan Rabb will be back for his sophomore year in Berkeley; he is the highest-rated returning player in the country.

-- Astros have allowed 27 first inning runs in 19 games, most in MLB.

-- Lakers fired coach Byron Scott; he is 102-292 in his last five years as a coach, but he did have success with the Nets/New Orleans. You need good players to win.

-- Celtics 104, Hawks 95-- Atlanta has now lost 10 overtime games in a row.

              -- Islanders 2, Panthers 1 OT-- Florida hasn't won a playoff series since 1996.

-- Prop bet at South Point: Will the Cuibs win 100+ games? Yes +$150, No -$170

              **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend......

              13) Tremendous day of games today, lot of good stuff. Washington beat the Twins in 16 innings, in a game with 516 pitches thrown, 27 players used, 14 pitchers. Game took 5:56, with 27 hits and 32 strikeouts. Great fun.

              12) Cubs are already 6-1 against Cincinnati this year; they've outscored the Reds 60-20 in those seven games. Reds are not a good baseball team.

              11) Yesterday's quiz answer was Hideo Nomo as author of the only no-hitter at Coors Field; Nomo pitched in Denver 10 times. In his other nine starts, aside from the no-hitter, Nomo was 2-1, 9.67, allowing 11 HRs in 44.2 IP.

              10) Pitcher Shelby Miller wound up playing left field for Arizona in the 13th inning yesterday, as SS Nick Ahmed got thrown out for arguing balls/strikes and the Snakes were out of position players. Pitchers Zack Greinke and Jon Niese both had pinch-hits in the game.

              9) Braves' catcher AJ Pierzynski has 1,999 hits; he will become the 10th catcher ever to get 2,000 hits. Pretty impressive; was surprised when I heard it.

              8) Mat Latos is early leader for Comeback Player of the Year; he is 4-0, 0.74 in four starts for the White Sox. In 2014-15, he was a combined 9-15, 4.16 in 37 starts for four different teams.

              7) Saturday night in Las Vegas, four guys bet a cab driver $100 he wouldn't drive thru the In 'n Out Burger drive-thru lane in reverse; they lost.

              6) Hall of Fame pitcher Don Drysdale's widow, Anne Meyers, who was a great hoop player at UCLA, sold lot of her late husband's memorabilia; his 1963 and 1965 World Series rungs netted just under $200,000 combined.

              5) Tanner Roark was awesome Saturday, whiffing 15 Twins in a 2-0 Washington win; he threw 121 pitches, most by any major leaguer this season.

There was a Twitter debate this weekend, where guys were talking about high school coaches having kids throw 160+ pitches in a game. No bueno.

              4) Of the 183 NHL teams who trailed playoff series 3-0, only nine forced a Game 7; those nine teams went 4-5 in the Game 7.

              3) Do big league teams shift too much? Some ex-players in TV booths this weekend were discussing this- their consensus seemed to be that a star pitcher like Kershaw should have veto rights over any shifts, but you have to earn the right to have veto rights over the manager. It is an interesting debate.

              2) Los Angeles Clippers have never led a playoff series, 3-0. Ever.

              1) Phil Simms came out and said Jared Goff is the 3rd-best QB in this week's draft; he may be right or may be wrong, but I don't give rat's ass what Simms says about QBs, despite his having been a very good player himself.

Long time ago, Simms shredded Ben Roethlisberger on Mike Francesa's Sunday radio show when Ben was a senior at Miami; he denies it now, but I remember listening to it and then laughing when Big Ben became such a good player.

The Chicago Cubs continue their run atop our Power Rankings this week with the Washington Nationals closing the gap slightly. The most notable changes are five clubs (Giants, Astros, Yankees, Tigers and Marlins) taking massive nosedives down the list.

The Cubs stay atop the rankings after going 5-2 last week. Chicago is now 14-5 on the season. Chicago’s pitching has been terrific all year, and if their offense gets consistent, the Cubs could be an elite team.

                        (11-7-0) -128 Washington
Washington had another winning week; the Nationals are 14-4 after 18 games this season. The Nationals’ starting pitching has been outstanding. Washington’s offense broke out last week as they’ve scored 27 runs in their last six games.

The Pirates are 10-9 after three weeks of play. Pittsburgh’s offense is in excellent form as they’ve scored 32 total runs in their last four games. Pitching is still a concern as they gave up 25 runs in those four games.

                        6 8 up 2 10-8
                        (9-9-0) -120 St. Louis

                        (8-9-0) -118 NY Mets
The Mets are heating up as they are 6-1 over their last seven games, bringing their season record to 10-7. New York’s offense has come around; they’ve scored 54 runs in their last nine games.

                        8 13 up 5 13-6
                        (10-9-0) -117 Chi. White Sox
The White Sox went 5-2 this past week week, pushing their record to 13-6 on the season. They have played a soft early schedule, but Chicago’s pitching has been excellent as they’ve given up 3 runs or less in 15 of their 19 games.

                        9 14 up 5 11-6
                        (10-7-0) -116 Baltimore
Baltimore is 11-6 on the season. The Orioles have a potent offense, but their pitching is poor. However, the pitching staff has been good recently, allowing 22 runs over their last six games.

                        10 15 up 5 9-7
                        (7-9-0) -115 Cleveland
Cleveland came into this season with high expectations, but the Indians have started their season off slow. Cleveland is 9-7 after sixteen games. The Indians will begin this week with momentum after a 3-game sweep in Detroit over the weekend.

                        11 12 up 1 9-9
                        (10-8-0) -114 Boston
Boston has played .500 baseball over their first 18 games of the season. However, that is pretty good considering the Red Sox have played a brutal schedule so far this year.

                        12 9 down 3 10-10
                        (11-9-0) -114 Toronto
Toronto has been extremely disappointing so far this season. The Blue Jays are just 10-10 over their first twenty games. Toronto has been a streaky team, winning or losing in clusters.

                        13 3 down 10 9-11
                        (9-11-0) -113 San Francisco
San Francisco had another poor week, and the Giants are just 3-9 over their last twelve games. Their last seven games have come at home against weak competition, so there is some concern with this team which prompted a steep drop in the rankings.

                        14 7 down 7 8-9
                        (9-8-0) -112 Detroit
Detroit is in terrible current form. The Tigers are 8-9 overall, but they are just 2-6 over their last eight games. In their defense, they did play the Royals and Indians in their last six games.

                        15 16 up 1 10-9
                        (10-9-0) -105 Texas
The Rangers were hot, but they just got swept in a 3-game series by the White Sox. Texas is still a respectable 10-9 on the season. The Rangers’ offense needs to put-up a lot runs to win because their pitching has been so poor.

                        16 18 up 2 10-10
                        (9-11-0) -102 Arizona
Arizona is 10-10 on the season despite playing a 4-game series with the Cubs, and a 3-game series against the Dodgers. The Diamondbacks’ offense has been fantastic while scoring 30 runs in their last four games.

                        17 19 up 2 9-9
                        (11-7-0) 100 Seattle
The Mariners are 4-1 over their last five games, pushing their record to 9-9 on the season. Seattle’s woeful offense came to life this past week as they scored 26 runs in their last four games.

                        18 24 up 6 10-9
                        (10-9-0) 105 Oakland
Oakland is 10-9 on the season after ripping off a 6-game winning streak. The A’s play in a lot of close games; 54 one run games last season. Oakland has already played in 8 one run games this season; they are 5-3 in those games.

                        19 20 up 1 8-10
                        (8-10-0) 108 Tampa Bay
Tampa Bay is just 8-10 in their eighteen games, but their offense has recently come around. The Rays scored 25 total runs in their last four games, including 15 runs in their 3-game series in New York against the Yankees.

                        20 21 up 1 8-11
                        (8-11-0) 110 LA Angels
Los Angeles is just 8-11 after the first three weeks of the season. Their offense has scored just 57 total runs in those nineteen games. The Angels were a fortunate team last season, but they’ve had no such luck so far this season.

                        21 17 down 4 7-10
                        (6-11-0) 111 NY Yankees
New York had another rough week; they are now just 7-10 on the season. The Yankees’ offense is in an extended slump as they’ve only scored 31 total runs in their last twelve games.

                        22 25 up 3 8-11
                        (9-10-0) 115 Milwaukee
Milwaukee is just 8-11 after three weeks of the season. The Brewers’ pitching continues to be a major concern. They’ve given up 113 total runs; the second most in all of baseball.

                        23 26 up 3 9-10
                        (8-11-0) 118 Cincinnati
After opening the season with a 5-1 record, Cincinnati has gone 4-9 to bring their overall record to 9-10. Their losing ways can be mainly attributed to their poor pitching which has allowed 117 total runs on the season; the most in baseball.

                        24 27 up 3 9-9
                        (11-7-0) 120 Colorado
Colorado is a respectable 9-9 after the first three weeks of the season. The Rockies have played a pretty tough schedule, so this team may be better than projected.

                        25 28 up 3 9-10
                        (9-10-0) 124 Philadelphia
Philadelphia opened the season at 0-4, but they’ve gone 9-6 since. While the Phillies have moved up in the power ratings in consecutive weeks, they are still one of the worst teams in baseball.

                        26 11 down 15 6-13
                        (5-14-0) 125 Houston
The Astros have taken a major drop in the power rankings after opening the season with a 6-13 record. Houston has simply looked terrible on the mound and at the plate, and they won’t be moving up until they show some major improvement.

                        27 29 up 2 7-12
                        (9-10-0) 127 San Diego
The Padres are just 7-12 after nineteen games this season. Aside from scoring 29 runs in two games in Colorado, the San Diego offense had scored a total of 18 runs in their other eleven games. But they’ve come alive lately, scoring 25 runs over their last six games.

                        28 22 down 6 6-11
                        (7-10-0) 128 Miami
Miami’s season continues to be terrible; the Marlins are just 6-11 in their first seventeen games. Miami will stay on the road this upcoming week with 7 away games against the Dodgers and Brewers.

                        29 23 down 6 5-14
                        (9-10-0) 129 Minnesota
The Twins began this season with an 0-9 record, but they’ve gone 5-5 since to raise their record to 5-14. Minnesota is just 1-10 on the road, so their upcoming 6-game homestand will be welcomed with open arms.

                        30 30 same 4-14
                        (8-10-0) 130 Atlanta
The Braves began the season winless at 0-9, but they went 4-5 over their next nine games. However, Atlanta is on a 5-game losing streak, and their next seven games will be against the Red Sox and Cubs.

                        • Drysdale's Series ring sells for $110K
                          April 24, 2016

LOS ANGELES (AP) Don Drysdale's 1963 World Series championship ring with the Los Angeles Dodgers sold for $110,111 in an auction of the late Hall of Fame pitcher's memorabilia.

A spokesman for SCP Auctions says the ring was purchased by an anonymous buyer in the sale that ended late Saturday.

Drysdale's 1962 Cy Young Award as the National League's top pitcher sold for $100,100.

Kelly Drysdale, the pitcher's daughter from his first marriage, previously expressed sadness that she wasn't informed of the auction or offered any items by Drysdale's widow, Hall of Fame basketball player Ann Meyers. Kelly Drysdale says she would have liked the Cy Young Award, which was displayed in her house growing up.

Drysdale's 1965 World Series championship ring went for $90,999, while his 1956 Brooklyn Dodgers game-worn rookie uniform fetched $82,727.

Those buyers also wished to remain anonymous.

Among the other items garnering the highest prices was four of Drysdale's game-worn Dodgers uniforms, including two that he wore during the 1965 World Series. They sold for prices ranging from $25,686 to $41,372. His 1956 Brooklyn Dodgers NL championship ring went for $25,726, and his well-worn, game-used fielder's glove from the 1960s sold for $30,343.

                          • Pujols waits for Reggie's call, Hamels out
                            April 25, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                            LEGENDARY CALL

Albert Pujols will be waiting by the phone to hear from Reggie Jackson after tying the Hall of Famer with his 563rd home run Sunday. ''He always calls me whenever something like that happens,'' Pujols said. ''When I hit those three homers in that World Series game, he called me the next day to congratulate me.''

                            HAMELS SCRATCHED

Rangers lefty Cole Hamels was scratched from his scheduled start because of a strained left groin muscle. The injury isn't considered serious and there is no plan to put him on the disabled list. Lefty Cesar Ramos will be recalled from Triple-A to start in Hamels' spot against Yankees right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (0-2, 6.11 ERA).

                            ALMOST THERE

Indians OF Michael Brantley (shoulder) will meet the Indians in Minnesota for a medical examination and could be activated if he passes. Cleveland manager Terry Francona said Brantley could return to the active roster even if he's not ready to play every day.

                            ANOTHER TOUGH OPPONENT

In his last three starts, Giants ace Madison Bumgarner (1-2, 3.91) has faced Dodgers star Clayton Kershaw twice and Diamondbacks ace Zack Greinke. His next assignment - Padres LHP Drew Pomeranz (2-1, 2.04) - may not be much easier to beat. The 27-year-old Pomeranz struck out 10 his last time out and has 25 strikeouts over 17 2/3 innings this season.

                            HAPPY NEW YEAR?

How good can 27 be for Steven Souza Jr.? It's off to a fine start after the Rays outfielder homered twice on his birthday in an 8-1 win Sunday against the Yankees. Souza became the first major leaguer to hit two homers on his birthday since Minnesota's Trevor Plouffe in June 2012. ''I'll play him next year (again),'' Rays manager Kevin Cash said.
