Hottest team: Athletics (won four straight)

Looking to pull off a sweep in the Bronx, Oakland will look to win its fifth straight and remain perfect on the road in the young season. They’ll play at Toronto and Detroit next, so that unbeaten run will likely end sooner than later, but the A’s will send lefty Rich Hill (1-2, 4.13) to the mound in the hopes of ensuring that first loss doesn’t come today.
A’s pitching has surrendered just a pair of runs in each of the last three games and has yet to give up more than two in any game they’ve played outside Oakland, hence the road warrior status. Hill surrendered a single run over six innings in his lone road start in Seattle, striking out 10. The bullpen has allowed just one run in eight innings they’ve worked thus far against the Yanks, who they’ve now beaten in 20 of the last 28. Third baseman Danny Valencia left Wednesday’s win with a hamstring strain, so manager Bob Melvin will likely have Chris Coghlan or Mark Canha in his place at the hot corner here. The ‘under’ has prevailed in 10 of 12 A’s games, including all five of their road wins.

Coldest team: Giants (lost three straight)

The Giants suffered their seventh loss in eight games when Zack Greinke continued his mastery in AT&T Park, winning a pitcher’s duel against Madison Bumgarner 2-1. The Diamondbacks now go in search of a four-game sweep with Shelby Miller (0-1, 8.53) taking the mound against Johnny Cueto (3-0, 3.38), the only Giants pitcher who has picked up a victory since April 12. Cueto is a perfect 3-0 with San Francisco and has given up a single run in two of his three starts, though both of those efforts came on the road. He struggled in his first start in front of the paying customer, surrendering six runs on 10 Dodgers hits in a game where the offense bailed him out. Maybe his presence will help wake up his team’s bats, since they’ve only managed to score more than a single run once in the last four games.
San Francisco hitters went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position against Greinke and the D'backs bullpen and are 3-for-30 during his losing streak. The Diamondbacks have won in San Francisco in 11 of their last 13 contests and have won seven of the last eight overall. Miller has yet to win in an Arizona uniform and left his last start early with a lacerated index finger. Mechanics issues led to him banging his hand on the ground after releasing pitches as he worked just 1.2 innings in San Diego, facing 10 batters.

Hottest pitcher: Jake Arrieta (3-0, 1.23 ERA)

Chicago's ace has picked up right where he left last season, running his streak to 14 consecutive decisions won. He hasn't allowed a run in two of his three starts this season and hasn't surrendered one in Wrigley Field since July 25 of last season, a streak of six consecutive scoreless outings. No one in baseball history had ever done that before. Arrieta's first loss last season came at home against Cincinnati, but he's a heavy favorite (-200) here.

Coldest pitcher: Taylor Jungmann (0-2, 9.00 ERA)

The Brewers knew this season would have its rough patches, but were counting on seeing their young players make significant strides to ease the ride. Thus far, the rocky road has been as promised -- they're 7-8 -- but some unpolished gems are flaming out. Keon Broxton has already been sent down, while Jungmann, the top pitching prospect, has followed up a promising 9-8 rookie season by losing his first two decisions of 2016, rocking a pretty grimy ERA. This will be his first time ever seeing the Twins. He's got a tidy 1.80 home ERA after working five strong innings at Miller Park this season and was excellent there last year, going 5-2 with a 2.21 ERA.

Biggest UNDER run: Blue Jays (7-0 last seven)

Toronto averaged 5.5 runs per game last season, but has plated just 4.0 runs per game in 2016 after Wednesday's 4-3 extra-inning loss at Baltimore. They went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position. The 'under' has prevailed in nine of the Jays' last 10 games. They've also played 13 of 16 games that have been decided by two runs or less this season.

Biggest OVER run: Braves (5-0-1 last six)

Atlanta got clipped in extra innings by the Dodgers, snapping a four-game winning streak. The 5-3 result reached the projected total of eight runs, pushing and keeping the team's streak of 'overs' intact. The Braves have scored 29 runs (5.8 per game) over their last five games, but haven't hit a home run since Drew Stubbs left the yard on April 10. Atlanta ranks last in MLB with three HRs, but is 4-1 since moving Nick Markakis into the leadoff spot, taking full advantage of his run of reaching safely in an MLB-best 26 consecutive games. They'll run into Clayton Kershaw (2-0, 1.64) on Thursday, so they're going to be hard-pressed to continue this high-scoring run. The total is set at 6.5.

Matchup to watch: Tigers at Royals

Sure, it's early -- we're barely 10 percent into baseball's regular season -- but the AL Central Division has seen the White Sox get off to an unexpected strong start, which means the winner of this one gets to keep pace while the loser leaves Kansas City stuck in third. The teams have split the first two meetings in riveting contests and will get another national showcase on FS-1 for this rubber game. Tigers starter Mike Pelfrey (0-2, 2.79) has yet to win for his new team and has walked more batters (7) than he's struck out (6), but he gave up a single run in six innings at Houston last time out, suffering a hard-luck 1-0 loss. Edinson Volquez (2-0, 2.04) is off to an excellent start for the Royals, but he'll have to be wary of a slumping Miguel Cabrera, who is 5-for-8 against him in his career, reaching based eight times in 11 plate appearances.

Betcha didn’t know: Although Colorado's Trevor Story has stolen the show among rookies, Astros 1B Tyler White has been no slouch. The early favorite for AL Rookie of the Year already has one Player of the Week honor under his belt and smacked his fifth homer of the season to supply his team's lone run in Wednesday's 2-1 loss. He had been hitting .167 with 11 strikeouts over the last week prior to going 1-for-4, but hasn't had a hit that hasn't left the yard in each of the past six games and has struck out at least once in eight consecutive contests. He'll look to help the Astros snap a two-game losing streak and avoid a sweep in Arlington behind Dallas Keuchel (2-1, 2.18). At this point, Houston has been MLB's biggest disappointment.

Biggest public favorite: Dodgers (-250) at Braves

Biggest public underdog: Tigers (+150) at Royals

Biggest line move: Mariners (+110 to -107) at Indians

    • ESPN fires former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling as analyst
      April 21, 2016

Curt Schilling helped the Boston Red Sox end an 86-year championship drought and then immediately started squandering the goodwill he had earned.

Even before the celebratory champagne could go flat, Schilling irritated Democrats in presidential candidate John Kerry's home state - many of them Red Sox fans - by blurting out on national TV, ''Vote Bush.'' He toyed with public office himself in 2009 after U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy died, a plan that was complicated because, as an unenrolled voter, Schilling would have had to run as an independent.

That was the essence of the pitcher known in Boston as ''The Big Schill'': Outspoken, controversial, supremely confident in his opinions in the moment only to realize soon enough that he hadn't quite thought things through.

On Wednesday, Schilling was fired from his job as an ESPN baseball analyst after comments on Facebook critical of transgender rights.

The post included an image of a man wearing a long blond wig and revealing women's clothing and the phrase, ''Let him in! To the restroom with your daughter or else you're a narrow minded, judgmental, unloving, racist bigot who needs to die!!!''

In response to recent laws in several states that restrict bathroom access for transgender people, Schilling added: ''A man is a man no matter what they call themselves,'' and, ''Now you need laws telling us differently? Pathetic.''

The network, which suspended Schilling from the Little League World Series last year over a tweet in which he compared Muslim extremists to Nazi-era Germans, said Wednesday night that he had been fired.

''ESPN is an inclusive company,'' the network said in a statement. ''Curt Schilling has been advised that his conduct was unacceptable and his employment with ESPN has been terminated.''

The 49-year-old Schilling, did not immediately respond to a text message sent to the telephone number he had when he pitched for the Red Sox. But he wrote on his blog on Tuesday that his critics were ''just dying to be offended so you can create some sort of faux cause to rally behind.''

''There are things I have deeply held beliefs in, things I have that are core to who I am, things I am passionate about. If you ask me about them it's likely I'll give you a passionate answer,'' he wrote. ''Whether you like that answer or not is completely up to you. I am not going to give you answers to make sure you like what I say, let the rest of the insecure world do that.''

An undisputed workhorse on the pitcher's mound, Schilling had a 216-146 record in a 20-year career with five teams, adding a .846 playoff winning percentage that is among the best in baseball history. He became eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2013 and this year, his fourth on the ballot, he received more than half of the votes but far short of the 75 percent needed for induction.

A year earlier, Schilling accused the members of the Baseball Writers Association of America who vote for the Hall of holding it against him because he is a Republican. He later said he was joking.

      It's a common pattern.

His strident criticism of steroid users earned him an invitation to a congressional hearing, but when called to testify, Schilling said: ''The issue was grossly overstated by people, including myself.''

Still, two years later he called out Barry Bonds for using performance-enhancing drugs, saying as the slugger approached baseball's career home run record: ''He admitted to cheating on his wife, cheating on his taxes and cheating on the game.''

      The next day, Schilling apologized.

''Everyone has days and events in life they'd love to push the rewind button on, yesterday was one of those days,'' he wrote on the blog that was a must-read during his days in Boston.

More significantly: He bankrupted his video game business, putting nearly 300 people out of work, after burning through $75 million in loans guaranteed by Rhode Island. To satisfy his creditors, he auctioned off the contents of his home.

Schilling blamed state officials for pulling the plug prematurely.

If he was chastened by any of it, he isn't letting it show.

''I'm loud, I talk too much, I think I know more than I do, those and a billion other issues I know I have,'' he wrote on the blog this week after his transgender comments went viral. ''Like everyone one of you I have flaws, but I'm ok with my flaws, they're what make me, me.''

      • LEADING OFF: Price faces the Rays, Kershaw and Arrieta throw
        April 21, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

        OLD FRIEND

Red Sox LHP David Price (2-0, 4.50) is set to face Tampa Bay, the team he entered the majors with in 2008. It'll be his fourth career start against the Rays. He's 1-2 with a 4.26 ERA in his previous three.

        DALLAS IN ARLINGTON

AL Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel (2-1, 2.18) has made 14 career starts against Texas, most of any opponent for the lefty. His four wins against the Rangers are tied for the most by a Houston pitcher with Collin McHugh, Roy Oswalt and Wandy Rodriguez. He'll face A.J. Griffin, who has had seven days of rest.

        OTHER ACES TO WATCH

Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw will try to improve to 3-0 this season and 3-0 in his career against the Braves. He has a 1.79 ERA in six career starts against Atlanta. ... Cubs RHP Jake Arrieta (3-0, 1.23) will open a four-game series at Cincinnati against LHP Brandon Finnegan (1-0, 2.04). Arrieta has recorded three straight quality starts to begin the season. ... Max Scherzer (2-0, 3.15) goes for the Nationals against Miami, and Gerrit Cole (0-2, 4.22) pitches for Pittsburgh against San Diego.

        NOT PITCHING IN

Twins pitchers went 3 for 20 (.150) in interleague play last season and are 56 for 374 since it started in 1997. Manager Paul Molitor worries more about his staff getting injured than driving the ball. ''You're always a little bit fearful when you're asking guys to do things they don't normally do,'' he said. ''You just hope nobody does anything too crazy, either get carried away with their swings or if they do get a chance to run the bases. You hate to lose somebody because of a rare opportunity to get into the game offensively as a pitcher.'' Starter Tommy Milone did have two hits for Minnesota in a 10-5 loss to Milwaukee on Wednesday night.

        UP-HILL BATTLE

The Yankees had trouble against left-handed pitching last season and get a tough matchup against Oakland's Rich Hill. The southpaw has 19 strikeouts in 13 innings this season and has furthered the improbable comeback he began last season from independent ball to a major league rotation.

              • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Some pointspreads on NFL games after Week 1- they were released Thursday:

Week 2-- Seahawks (-4) @ Rams-- Rams' first home game in Coliseum since 1979.

Week 2-- Packers @ Vikings (even)-- Minnesota's first game in its new dome.

Week 4-- Browns @ Redskins (-7.5)-- RGIII returns to Maryland.

Week 5-- Patriots (-7) @ Browns-- Belichick returns to Cleveland.

Week 7-- Texans @ Broncos (-6.5)-- Osweiler returns to Mile High City.

Week 10-- Seahawks @ Patriots (-2)-- Carroll returns to Foxboro.

                **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here........

                13) Washington Wizards gave Scott Brooks $35M for five years to be their new coach; with Maryland native Kevin Durant a free agent this summer, I'm sure it is not a coincidence that the Wizards hired Durant's old coach.

                12) Jake Arrieta no-hit the Reds 16-0 last night in Cincinnati, the most dramatic 16-0 game in MLB history. There were only nine starts between this game and Arrieta's other no-hitter last year.

                11) If you care about such things, it was just the second no-hitter at Great American Ballpark; Homer Bailey had the first one.

                10) If you care about such things, over is 14-5 in interleague games so far this season.

                9) Oakland A's are much-improved so far over last year; A's are 7-2 if their starting pitcher finishes the 6th inning, 2-5 if he does not.

                8) Tony Romo turned 36 years old Thursday; why haven't the Cowboys drafted a young QB they can groom to play after Romo finishes his career?

                7) Rockets 97, Warriors 96-- I'm guessing Steph Curry's foot got a lot better once Houston won this game, making series 2-1 Golden State.

                6) Chicago 4, St Louis 3 double OT-- Patrick Kane scored his 5th career OT playoff goal as Chicago stayed alive- they trail series 3-2. Only guys with more OT playoff goals than Kane are Joe Sakic (8), Rocket Richard (6)- Edmonton's Glenn Anderson also had five OT playoff goals.

Blackhawks are now 12-4 in elimination games under Joel Quenneville.

                5) Tennessee-Martin head coach Heath Schroyer quit this week, to become an assistant coach at NC State, a kick in the teeth to the OVC school that gave Schroyer a chance to resurrect his career after he had been fired at Wyoming- he was later an assistant at UNLV. He'll make more money as an assistant at NC State than he was making at Tenn-Martin.

                4) Adam Scott/Louis Oosthuizen already came out and said they'll skip the Olympics in South America this summer- they're both in top 15 in the world, so thats a blow to golf becoming a regular Olympic sport.

                3) A 6-10 kid who plays hoop at Washington State but graduated from the school this spring wanted to transfer to San Diego State, where he could play one more season next year, for a much better team, but Wazzu coach Ernie Kent blocked the transfer, claiming the Aztecs tampered/poached the kid.

This happens more and more these days, bigtime schools filling holes in their roster by cherry-picking good players from lower-level schools. I applaud Kent for standing up to teams poaching his roster.

                2) If you ever wondered how much a casino costs, Boyd Gaming bought Aliante Casino in North Las Vegas this week, for a reported $380M, a mere bag of shells. LOL That is one casino in Las Vegas I haven't been to yet.

                1) I had no idea how wildly popular Prince was, until he passed away way too early Thursday at age 57. Apparently he had been ill for a while, but official word hasn't come out yet. I read yesterday that he was a prolific songwriter who has a ton of unreleased music that I'm sure we'll be hearing in the future.

The D-backs return home to battle the Pirates for a three-game series as Arizona looks to improve on a 2-5 mark at Chase Field.

                          Coldest team:
                          Giants (0-5 last five)
San Francisco began the campaign with a solid 6-2 record, but things have unraveled for the Giants of late. Bruce Bochy’s club has lost eight of their last nine games, with each of those eight defeats coming to division foes Arizona, Los Angeles, and Colorado. Coincidentally, the last time San Francisco was swept at AT&T Park came last June against Arizona as the Giants fell to 1-9 in their last 10 home matchups with the D-backs. San Francisco begins a three-game set with Miami, as the Marlins captured five of seven meetings with the Giants in 2015.

Hottest pitcher: Felix Hernandez, Mariners (1-1, 1.00 ERA)
The former Cy Young award winner has started out of the gate by allowing two earned runs in his first three starts. Hernandez grabbed his first victory of the season against the Yankees last Saturday, even though it was his shortest outing by tossing five innings and walking six batters. King Felix split six starts against the Angels last season, but the Mariners are 5-2 in his last seven outings in Anaheim since 2013.

Coldest pitcher: Adam Wainwright, Cardinals (0-2, 8.27 ERA)
The St. Louis right-hander has struggled this season, while coming off a pair of awful starts against the Braves and Reds. Wainwright gave up 16 hits and 12 earned runs in only 10.1 innings of work, but the Cardinals’ offense plated 20 runs in his last two outings (1-1). Wainwright is making his first start at Petco Park since May 2013, as the Cardinals are 3-0 in his last three outings against the Padres.

Biggest UNDER run: Blue Jays (8-0 last eight)
Not many people would believe that Toronto’s explosive lineup would produce eight consecutive ‘unders,’ but that’s the case after cashing the ‘under’ in all seven games on their road swing at Boston and Baltimore. In seven of the eight ‘unders’ in this stretch, Toronto has scored four runs or fewer, while the last four games have been decided by one run apiece. The Blue Jays host the Athletics, who have hit the ‘under’ in five of six road games this season, while allowing just 11 runs on the highway.

Biggest OVER run: Red Sox (2-0 last two)
Granted, it’s not a very long streak, but we’ll focus on Boston since the Sox are 4-1 to the ‘over’ away from Fenway Park. Boston is coming off a pair of ‘overs’ against Tampa Bay, while blowing a 5-1 lead in Thursday’s 12-8 setback to the Rays. The Red Sox are hitting the road for the first time following a 10-game homestand as John Farrell’s team has scored at least six runs in four of five road contests. Boston sailed ‘over’ the total in four of six matchups with Houston last season, but scored a combined nine runs in three losses at Minute Maid Park.

Matchup to watch: Dodgers vs. Rockies

Los Angeles continues its six-game road trip after taking two of three from Atlanta. The Dodgers lead the NL West with a 10-6 record, which includes a 4-3 mark on the road against division opponents. However, Los Angeles has lost five of the last seven visits to Coors Field, while getting swept at Colorado last September. The Rockies return home following a 3-3 road trip, as two of those victories came at Wrigley Field over the Cubs. Right-hander Jonathan Gray makes his first start of the season for the Rockies, as Colorado put together a 1-4 record in his five home starts in 2015.

Betcha didn’t know: The Brewers won all seven matchups with the Phillies last season, while finishing ‘under’ the total in a three-game sweep at Miller Park. Philadelphia compiled a 4-0 record in right-hander Aaron Nola’s first four road starts last season, but the Phillies have currently lost each of his past four away outings since last September, including a 3-2 defeat at Cincinnati in the opening series.

Biggest public favorite: Cubs (-200) at Reds

Biggest public underdog: Orioles (+105) at Royals

Biggest line move: Astros (-130 to -145) vs. Red Sox

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.......

                                13) Cleveland Browns aren't favored in any of their first 15 games this year; they play at Pittsburgh in Week 17, so they won't be favored there, either, so new coach Hue Jackson has his work cut out for him.

                                12) Free agent CB Josh Norman got big money from the Redskins last night, which means he'll line up against Odell Beckham twice a year when Giants play the Redskins in divisional games. Little strange how Carolina suddenly did an about face and let Norman walk, rather than pay him.

                                11) Hartford Yard Dogs are the AA farm club of Colorado Rockies; they do not have a home game until May 31, since their new home park is still being worked on. They'll play their first 52 games on the road- they are 11-4 so far this season and in first place in their division.

                                10) Last year, Biloxi of the Southern League played their first 54 games on the road, while their new stadium was being finished; guy who managed that team is now the first base coach for the big league Milwaukee Brewers.

                                9) White Sox turned a 9-3-2-6-2-5 triple play last night that involved Prince Fielder being caught in a rundown; suffice to say it will not be included on Tom Emanski's next baserunning instructional video.

                                8) Why has the state of Virginia given 200,000 convicted felons the right to vote? Virginia is the 8th state to allow felons to vote, after they're released from supervision. To me, it doesn't make much sense.

                                7) Keelon Lawson is an assistant basketball coach at Memphis; the Tigers' top two returning scorers are his sons. He has a third son who is listed as a top 10 recruit in the Class of 2019, which is why Lawson is still employed by Memphis, even after head coach Josh Pastner was paid $1.25M to go away and take the Georgia Tech job earlier this month.

New coach Tubby Smith wasn't going to keep Lawson as an assistant coach, so one of the sons, Dedric Lawson applied for NBA Draft, an implied threat to keep the father as an assistant. This hasn't been resolved yet. Stay tuned.

                                6) Going thru some college basketball stuff, getting stuff ready for next year and saw this: over the last 11 years, DePaul is 39-155 in conference games. How in the name of Ray Meyer is this possible? DePaul is in Chicago, there are lot of good high school players in Chicago-- recruit some of them!!!!

                                5) Texas Rangers are 15-3 in their last 18 games vs AL West rival Houston.

                                4) Baseball season is in its third week and my fantasy team is already in deep trouble; Stanton/Abreu have been awful, two of my top three pitchers are hurt and I'm going to be 0-3 come Sunday night. No bueno; Carlos Gomez, Marcell Ozuna and Avasail Garcia have all proven to be stiffs in my outfield.

                                3) Yasiel Puig made an amazing throw from the rightfield fence last night to nail Trevor Story at third base, trying for a triple. Reminded me of Ellis Valentine throwing from RF for the old Montreal Expos at Olympic Stadium.

                                2) Coaching carousel: Northern Colorado fired BJ Hill, amidst allegations of NCAA issues. Detroit Titans named Michigan assistant Bacari Alexander their new hoop coach. UNLV approved Marvin Menzies' contract, but for whatever reason, he won't be paid as much as Chris Beard was going to be paid. Oy.

                                1) Matt Holliday may be 37, but over last three years, he is hitting .379 with RISP, best such mark in the major leagues.
