      • Cubs visit Cardinals
        April 18, 2016

CHICAGO CUBS (9-3) at ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (7-5)

First pitch: Monday, 8:00 p.m. ET
        Sportsbook.ag Line: Chicago -115, St. Louis +105, Total: 8.0

The Cubs and the Cardinals, hated rivals and National League Central powerhouses, kick off a three-game series at Busch Stadium.

The Cubs (9-3), believed by many to be the most talented team in baseball, come into this series with the second-best record in the majors. (Only the Nationals, at 9-2, have a better mark.) But it’s never easy for them—or any team, for that matter—to beat the division-rival Cardinals (7-5), especially in Busch Stadium. The second-place Cards, currently two games behind the division-leading Cubbies, have an opportunity to overtake first place, whereas Chicago has a chance to put some distance between the clubs.

On the mound for Joe Maddon’s team will be veteran RHP John Lackey (2-0, 5.68 ERA, 11 SO, 4 BB in 12 2/3 innings), who has been the beneficiary of plenty of run support. On the hill for Mike Matheny’s squad will be RHP Mike Leake (0-1, 6.97 ERA, 7 SO, 4 BB in 10 1/3 innings), who has struggled in his first two starts with the Cards. The Cubs have played well away from Wrigley Field (5-1) and the Cardinals have been solid in St. Louis (4-2). This will be the first meeting of the season between the two teams.

The Cubs’ offense has produced, as expected (71 R – 2nd in MLB, 5.9 R/G). When you combine that with their 2.42 ERA (2nd in NL), you have one of the most complete clubs in the sport. The Cubs have more than enough power bats to survive the loss of LF Kyle Schwarber (0-for-4, 2 SO), who is out for the season after tearing his ACL and LCL. One through eight, the Cubs are relentless. Leadoff hitter Dexter Fowler (.375, 2 HR, 9 RBI, .510 OBP) has set the table nicely for the big boys. What’s scary for the National League is that Chicago’s most feared hitters haven’t really gotten going yet.

SS Addison Russell (.237, 1 HR, 7 RBI), LF Jorge Soler (.235, 2 HR, 5 RBI), Kris Bryant (.229, 2 HR, 5 RBI) and Ben Zobrist (.214, 0 HR, 4 RBI) have found hits hard to come by, and while 1B Anthony Rizzo (.186, 3 HR, 11 RBI, .352 OBP) has gaudy power numbers, he’s been terribly inconsistent.

High-priced free-agent acquisition Jason Heyward (.205, 0 HR, 7 RBI) has been a disappointment thus far. Rizzo has terrific career numbers against Leake (10-for-30 with 2 HR, 2 2B, 5 RBI and 3 BB), though Fowler (3-for-14 with 6 SO) and Heyward (1-for-14) have struggled against him.

So you think the Cubs can hit, huh? Well then you clearly haven’t paid much attention to the Cardinals, whose offense has been otherworldly (85 R – 1st in MLB, 7.1 R/G). Rookies Aledmys Diaz (.406, 2 HR, 8 RBI, .441 OBP, 5 2B) and Jeremy Hazelbaker (.394, 3 HR, 7 RBI, .421 OBP, 3 2B, 1 3B, 2 SB) have been on absolute tears, and seven-time All-Star Yadier Molina (.311, 0 HR, 6 RBI, 4 2B) just continues to deliver.

St. Louis has gotten RBI contributions from stalwarts Matt Carpenter (.250, 2 HR, 11 RBI, .411 OBP), Stephen Piscotty (.244, 2 HR, 8 RBI), Brandon Moss (.233, 4 HR, 10 RBI) and Matt Holliday (.225, 2 HR, 7 RBI). None of the Cardinals’ regulars have a significant number of at-bats against Lackey. Only SS Jhonny Peralta and C Brayan Pena have more than eight at-bats against the 37-year-old, but both players are on the 15-day disabled list.

            • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

              -- Mavericks 85, Thunder 84-- Kevin Durant was 7-33 from floor. 7. for. 33.

-- Warriors 115, Rockets 106-- Stephen Curry didn't even play.

-- Raptors 98, Pacers 87-- Toronto evens this series, 1-1.

-- Washington 6, Philly 1-- Caps are now up 3-nil in series.

-- Wild 5, Dallas Stars 3-- Home side won all three series games.

-- Kings 2, Sharks 1 OT-- LA's first win in six playoff OT games vs San Jose.

              **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

              13) Oklahoma City Thunder is now 3-13 in their last 16 games that were within five points with 5:00 to play.

NBA replay system came up big here, nullifying the Oklahoma City hoop that came just after the buzzer; Felton missed two FTs with 0:07 left, but Dallas survived and now the series heads to Texas tied 1-1.

              12) #1 seeds are 45-1 in NBA playoff series if they lead the series, 2-0.

              11) Jets are going into the NFL Draft without knowing who its QB will be in the fall, which is obviously a problem. Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Jets haven't been able to get an agreement on a contract- do they really want Geno Smith to be their guy?

              10) Kevin McHale is pretty good as a TV cmmentator; couple of people I know say he's a good guy and it came thru over the air Monday. The best analysts make you feel like you're listening to a conversation between him and the play-by-play guy.

              9) Parts of Houston had over 10 inches of rain in the last few days; crazy weather.

              8) Mississippi State football coach Dan Mullen ran the Boston Marathon Monday; if I drive my car 26 miles, I'm looking for a drive-thru window or a convenience store to get some Cherry Coke. Running 26 miles seems craxy to me.

              7) Cubs were -$310 against Colorado Saturday, the heaviest April favorite in over 10 years, when Bronx was -$354 in a game against the Royals.

              6) Dwyane Wade hasn't made a 3-pointer since December; he is 7-44 outside the arc for the season, which explains why he doesn't try many anymore. In 2009, Wade was 88-278 (31.7%) behind the arc- his career mark is 28.4%.

              5) Big East/Big East will play series of early season games in November to kick off the season: Villanova-Purdue, Wisconsin-Creighton, Seton Hall-Iowa are three of the better games that have been scheduled. St John's-Minnesota will also play.

              4) Mike Trout was the 25th pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, one pick after Cardinals' OF Randal Grichuk. Scouting is an inexact scienece.

              3) Angels didn't score a first inning run until their 11th game, despite Trout batting third in the batting order.

              2) Dustin Pedroia has been on base 48 games in a row against AL East opponents. The all-time record for most consecutive games reaching base is held by Ted Williams, who reached base in an amazing 84 consecutive games.

              1) John Madden's only three rules when he coached the Oakland Raiders:
-- Be on time. Pay attention. Play like hell.

                        April 19, 2016

Hottest team: Twins (won four straight)
Following a dreadful 0-9 start, Minnesota has come back to life after winning four consecutive games. The Twins swept a three-game series from the Angels over the weekend, then followed that up with a rain-shortened 7-4 victory over the Brewers on Monday. The key is the offense finally showed up after plating three runs or less in each of their first nine losses, as Minnesota scored 21 runs during this four-game winning streak. Ervin Santana takes the mound for the Twins in a matinee affair against the Brewers, searching for his first win in four starts in spite of owning a 3.00 ERA.

Coldest team: White Sox (lost three straight)
A promising 8-2 start on the South Side has faded along with the White Sox bats over the last few days. Chicago has dropped three straight, including an embarrassing 7-0 home loss to the Angels on Monday as Los Angeles chased southpaw Carlos Rodon with five runs in the opening inning. The Sox offense is nowhere to be found right now, putting up five runs in the last four games, while finishing ‘under’ the total in six of the past seven contests. Chicago hopes to turn things around tonight with veteran Mat Latos searching for his third victory in three starts after the right-hander beat Oakland and Minnesota on the road.

Hottest pitcher: Vincent Velasquez, Phillies (2-0, 0.00 ERA)
Philadelphia acquired the right-hander from Houston in a non-descript trade in December, but Velasquez has quickly turned into fantasy gem in April. Velasquez struck out 16 batters in a complete-game shutout of the Padres in his last outing, beating San Diego, 3-0 for his second victory in two starts. The former Astro silenced the Mets’ lineup in his first outing this season by scattering three hits in six scoreless innings and striking out nine in a 1-0 victory as a +145 road underdog on April 9.

Coldest pitcher: Alfredo Simon, Reds (0-1, 12.15 ERA)
Cincinnati expected to bolster its rotation with the return of Simon following a one-year stint in Detroit, but the right-handed hurler has struggled. Simon wasn’t bad in his first start of the season by allowing five hits and two runs in five innings against the Pirates before the bullpen blew a 5-2 lead in a 6-5 setback. However, Simon was shelled in his next outing against the Cubs by not escaping the first inning in a 9-2 rout at Wrigley Field by yielding five earned runs and recording only two outs.

Biggest UNDER run: Blue Jays (5-0 last five)
Toronto’s explosive offense from a year ago hasn’t quite lived up to expectations this season. The Blue Jays averaged 5.5 runs per game last season, but are plating 4.0 runs per game in 2016. Toronto managed a split of a four-game set at Boston on Monday, as the Jays have averaged 2.8 runs per game in their last six contests away from Rogers Center after putting up five runs in each of their two victories to start the season at Tampa Bay. The Jays travel to Baltimore tonight to face an Orioles’ squad that has eclipsed the ‘over’ in five of the last six games.

Biggest OVER run: Braves (4-0 last four)
Who woke up the Atlanta bats? The Braves finally got in the win column this past weekend by sweeping the Marlins, while scoring six runs in each of those three victories. Atlanta was limited to seven runs in a four-game sweep at Washington last week before breaking out at Miami, as the Braves are riding an 8-2 streak to the ‘over’ the last 10 games. The task won’t be easy to keep that streak alive tonight as the Dodgers invade Turner Field, as Los Angeles has allowed three runs or less in four of the past five contests.

Matchup to watch: Tigers vs. Royals
The top two teams in the AL Central hook up for the first time this season as Kansas City returns home following a 4-3 road trip. The Royals dropped the final two games at Oakland this past weekend, the first time this season the defending champions have lost consecutive contests. The Tigers lost two of three games at Houston last weekend with the two defeats coming by one run each. Yordano Ventura (0-0, 2.45 ERA) has racked up a pair of no-decisions in two Royals’ wins, despite allowing a total of three earned runs in 11 innings. In two home starts against Detroit last season, Ventura struck out 17 batters and yielded one earned runs in a pair of victories.

Betcha didn’t know: Only one team has yet to lose a road game this season and it’s the Oakland Athletics. Granted, the A’s have played only three times away from the Coliseum, but they were victorious in all three games at Seattle earlier this month. Oakland cashed the ‘under’ in each victory at Safeco Field, while limiting the Mariners to a total of four runs.

Biggest public favorite: Yankees (-170) vs. Athletics

Biggest public underdog: Mets (+102) at Phillies

Biggest line move: Rays (+110 to -105) at Red Sox

                        • LEADING OFF: Velasquez, Garcia coming off dominant outings
                          April 19, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                          KID STUFF

The Mets aren't the only NL East team with promising young pitching. Philadelphia right-hander Vince Velasquez is coming off a dominant outing in which he struck out 16 Padres during a three-hit shutout. He has thrown 15 scoreless innings to begin the season. Velasquez and fellow youngsters Aaron Nola and Jerad Eickhoff have a combined 78-to-14 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 60 innings. Velasquez faces Logan Verrett and the Mets in Philadelphia.

                          BIG STORY

Colorado rookie Trevor Story tries to extend his incredible start when the Rockies visit Cincinnati. Story homered and doubled against the Reds on Monday night and has at least one extra-base hit in eight of his 13 games this season. He leads the majors with eight home runs, the most through a player's first 13 games in major league history since 1900. ''You think you might want to give him a day off and he goes out and has another big game,'' Rockies manager Walt Weiss said.

                          GET WELL SOON

Chris Colabello is looking to get back into Toronto's starting lineup after being beaned by Steven Wright on Sunday, so the Blue Jays first baseman might need to put aside his get-well gift for a little while. The Red Sox pitcher sent a bottle of liquor to Colabello with his apologies. ''It's just more of a token of saying I'm sorry,'' Wright said. ''I didn't really want it to be a public thing because it was really between me and him.''

                          ENCORE

Cardinals lefty Jaime Garcia tries to follow up the best start of his career when St. Louis hosts the rival Chicago Cubs. Garcia pitched a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts - three more than his previous high - last Thursday in a 7-0 win over Milwaukee. Eight of Garcia's strikeouts were looking, and the 13 Ks were the most by a Cardinals left-hander since Steve Carlton fanned 16 Phillies on May 21, 1970.

                          CONSISTENT CUBS

Jason Hammel (1-0) starts for the Cubs at St. Louis, looking to extend an impressive streak. Chicago starters have worked at least six innings in every game. The 13-game run to begin the year is the longest in the majors since 1988 when the Astros had a 22-game streak and the Indians went 17 games, according to STATS.

                          THE OTHER GUY

Stephen Strasburg (2-0, 1.98 ERA) pitches for the Nationals against Marlins lefty Adam Conley (0-0, 3.86), who threw six scoreless innings in his most recent outing against the Mets and impressed his new manager, Don Mattingly. ''He pounded the strike zone,'' Mattingly said. ''He's going to come in there. He's not going to back off. He's going to pitch inside. It's interesting to watch how hitters react to him.''

                          • Cubs-Cardinals Preview
                            April 18, 2016

ST. LOUIS (AP) John Lackey had a little extra something in the tank for his old team.

The 37-year-old right-hander struck out 11 in seven innings of four-hit ball and delivered an RBI single, leading the Chicago Cubs over the St. Louis Cardinals 5-0 Monday night.

''I've been known to be able to focus a little bit, I guess,'' Lackey said. ''I kind of like this sort of situation.''

''You could tell he was amped up,'' Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said.

Jason Heyward, playing at Busch Stadium for the first time since leaving to sign with Chicago, was 0 for 4 at the plate, made two nice catches in right field and was booed throughout.

''Oh yeah, you hear it. It's fun, it's cool, whatever,'' Heyward said. ''They don't boo too often, so it must be somebody important or somebody doing something worth booing.''

Dexter Fowler homered for the second time in three days for the Cubs, a major league-best 10-3 and off to their best start since 1970. Chicago has won 15 of its last 16 regular-season road games, going 6-1 this year.

Fowler homered in the sixth, and rookie shortstop Aledmys Diaz misplayed a potential double-play grounder in the Cubs' three-run seventh, throwing the ball wildly for an error as a run scored. Addison Russell had a sacrifice fly and Lackey, who entered with a .111 career batting average, singled for a 4-0 lead and his seventh RBI in 129 career at-bats.

He has a hit and an RBI in his last two starts. But it was the pitching numbers that really mattered.

''We talked about it before the game, the focus he was going to have,'' Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. ''He had his sharpness tonight.''

Matheny wasn't too hard on Diaz, who doubled and is batting .400 in 35 at-bats.

''Young player, it happens,'' Matheny said. ''We do also see a trend of him getting better the more he gets out there.''

Lackey has a 12-4 record at 11-year-old Busch Stadium after entering with a 2.03 ERA at the park, his best among stadiums with four or more starts.

''I feel like it's by far the best place to pitch in the division, as far as size and not giving up homers,'' Lackey said.

Mike Leake (0-2) allowed four runs - three earned - and six hits in seven innings in his home debut for St. Louis. At the plate, he botched a squeeze bunt in the fifth, although Kolten Wong scrambled back to third safely to Lackey's ire.

''It was a tough pitch to try to get down. I guess I'll try to practice a little more,'' said Leake, one of the game's best hitting pitchers. He entered with a .210 career average.

Lackey (3-0) struck out cleanup hitter Brandon Moss three times, and fanned leadoff man Matt Carpenter and No. 5 hitter Stephen Piscotty twice each. The 11 strikeouts, one shy of his career high, was his 20th double-digit strikeout game.

Lackey was 13-10 with a career-best 2.77 ERA with St. Louis last year, taking over as ace after Adam Wainwright tore his left Achilles tendon in April.

                            TRAINER'S ROOM

Cardinals: SS Ruben Tejada was activated from the 15-day DL from a strained left quadriceps but did not play.

                            ROTATIONAL PULL

Cubs starters have worked at least six innings in every game. The 13-game streak to start the year is the longest in the majors since 1988 when the Astros had a 22-game streak and the Indians went 17 games, according to STATS.

                            NUMBERS GAME

Heyward is 1 for 18 against Leake with one RBI although he lined out sharply twice. Moss entered 4 for 8 with two RBIs against Lackey.

                            UP NEXT

Cubs: RHP Jason Hammel (1-0, 0.75 ERA) has allowed one run in 12 innings with nine strikeouts. He's 2-3 with a 5.97 ERA in seven career starts against St. Louis.

Cardinals: LHP Jaime Garcia (1-0, 2.40) threw a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts his last time out against Milwaukee.
