        • Thursday's Diamond Notes
          April 14, 2016

          Hottest team: Cubs (7-1)
Coming into the season, Chicago had high expectations following last season’s run to the National League Championship Series. The Cubs are living up to the lofty hopes early by winning seven of the first eight games, including a pair of home victories over the Reds. Chicago scored five runs in the first inning of Wednesday’s 9-2 blowout of Cincinnati, as Joe Maddon’s squad has plated at least five runs in six of eight games this season.

Things are setting up nicely for Chicago the remainder of April, as the Cubs host the Rockies this weekend, followed by a seven-game road trip at St. Louis and Cincinnati, then home for six games against Milwaukee and Atlanta. The amazing part of Chicago’s early success is the Cubs have overcome slow starts by two of its young stars with third baseman Kris Bryant (.212) and first baseman Anthony Rizzo (.207) each struggling at the plate.

          Coldest team: Twins (0-8)
Minnesota is one two winless teams remaining in baseball along with Atlanta, as the Twins were shut out at home by the White Sox on Wednesday, 3-0. The Twins haven’t hit an ‘over’ yet this season in eight games, while plating only one run through the first 18 innings of their series against Chicago.

The pitching hasn’t been terrible for Minnesota, as the Twins have allowed more than four runs in a game just once this season. Ervin Santana is making his third start of the season as his first outing at Baltimore was cut short due to a rain delay. The veteran right-hander scattered six hits and yielded two earned runs in six innings of work in his last outing at Kansas City, a 4-3 defeat last Friday.

Hottest pitcher: Cole Hamels, Rangers (2-0, 2.08 ERA)
Texas returns home from a 4-3 road trip against Baltimore, who suffered its first loss following a 7-0 start. The Rangers send out their ace to the mound in tonight’s opener as Hamels has been solid in two victories against the Mariners and Angels. Hamels allowed a pair of solo homers in his first outing against Seattle, but the Rangers’ southpaw settled down and gave up just four hits in a 3-2 victory. The former Phillies’ ace silenced the Angels by yielding four hits in six innings of a 4-1 triumph as a short underdog against the Rangers as Texas improved to 13-1 in his past 14 starts since last August.

Coldest pitcher: Chris Archer, Rays (0-2, 7.20 ERA)
It’s been a rough start for Tampa Bay’s standout right-hander, as Archer has failed to pitch past the fifth inning in losses to the Blue Jays and Orioles. In his last outing at Baltimore, Archer was lit up for six earned runs in five innings of work, while getting touched up for four home runs in a 6-1 defeat as a -125 road favorite. Archer didn’t face the Indians last season, but lost twice to Cleveland in the 2014 campaign, including a 6-5 home defeat as a -130 home favorite.

Biggest OVER run: Cardinals (5-0 last five)
After starting the season at 2-1 to the ‘under,’ St. Louis has run off five consecutive ‘overs,’ including a pair against Milwaukee. The Cardinals woke up after getting swept at Pittsburgh in the opening series by scoring at least seven runs during each contest of a four-game winning streak. St. Louis was limited to four runs in last night’s 6-4 defeat to Milwaukee, as the Cards plated three runs in the first inning before scoring only once in the final eight frames. The Cardinals beat Wily Peralta four times last season, as the Brewers’ right-hander has allowed 11 runs through two starts this season.

Biggest UNDER run: Padres (4-0 last four)
The Twins own the longest ‘under’ run at eight, but today’s spotlight will shine on San Diego. The Padres were blanked in their first three games against the Dodgers prior to busting out at Colorado with 32 runs. Heading to Philadelphia was definitely a buzz-kill following their successful weekend at Coors Field as the Padres have scored five runs in the first three games against the Phillies. In the past two defeats, San Diego has crossed home plate just once, but the Padres have held the inept Phillies’ offense to eight runs in three games.

Matchup to watch: Royals vs. Astros
Kansas City goes for the series victory after winning each of the two nights at Minute Maid Park. The Astros drilled the Royals in Monday’s opener, 8-2 in the first meeting since Kansas City eliminated Houston in last season’s ALDS. The Royals rebounded with a pair of low-scoring wins, while limiting the Astros to two runs in each of those victories. Ian Kennedy is coming off a strong Kansas City debut by tossing 6.2 scoreless innings in a 7-0 triumph over Minnesota last Saturday, as the right-hander takes the ball tonight. Dating back to last season (including playoffs), the Royals have won 11 of their last 16 road contests.

Betcha didn’t know: After losing each of his first two starts to the Dodgers last season, Arizona southpaw Robbie Ray didn’t allow a run in his final two outings against Los Angeles, both Diamondbacks victories. Since last September, the D-backs own a 5-1 record when Ray takes the mound, including handing the Cubs their only loss this season in a 3-2 win last Saturday.

Biggest public favorite: Cardinals (-190) vs. Brewers

Biggest public underdog: White Sox (+105) at Twins

Biggest line move: Padres (+130 to +120) at Phillies

            • LEADING OFF: Stripling starts for Dodgers after no-hit try
              April 13, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors Thursday:

              HE'S A BIG (NO) HIT!

Ross Stripling starts for the Dodgers after throwing 7 1/3 no-hit innings vs. the Giants in his major league debut. The 26-year-old rookie faces Arizona in his first home start. Two years removed from Tommy John surgery, the right-hander was pulled after 100 pitches with a no-hit bid intact at San Francisco and wound up with a no-decision - Striping and his parents backed that decision by first-year manager Dave Roberts.

              TRY AGAIN

All-Star Chris Archer makes his third attempt at his first win this season when the Rays host Cleveland. Archer is 0-2 after two tough starts vs. the Orioles and Blue Jays, giving up a combined 15 hits, four home runs and five walks in 10 innings.

              CHANGE UP

The Rockies are playing the percentages and moving up lefty Jorge De La Rosa by a day to start vs. San Francisco. He'll still be on regular rest when he takes the mound with a 48-16 career record at Coors Field - he owns 12 more wins than any other pitcher at the ballpark. ''Anytime you have an opportunity to get De La in this park you take it,'' manager Walt Weiss said. ''History tells you it's a winning formula.''

              KEEP THE COLES WARM

Cole Hamels (2-0, 2.08 ERA) starts when Texas takes on Baltimore to open a seven-game homestand. He's overcome six walks in 13 innings and has struck out 12.

              ZZZs FOR THOSE BATS

Jordan Zimmermann makes his second start of the season after dazzling in his Detroit debut, throwing seven shutout innings of two-hit ball against the Yankees. Zimmermann pitches at PNC Park against Pirates ace Gerrit Cole.

                        • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Padres are first team ever to get shut out five times in their first ten games.

-- Umps in Brewer-Cardinal game missed Randal Grichuk passing Brandon Moss as he hit a HR-- Moss went back to tag up and Grichuk rounded first, but it wasn't noticed by the Brewers' 1B or the umpires. No bueno.

-- 7-1 Canadian Thon Maker is eligible for the NBA next year; no college for him.

                          -- ESPN's NBA TV ratings Wednesday: Warriors got a 2.7, Lakers/Kobe got a 2.6.

-- Cowboys went 4-12 LY, still get the obligatory five primetime games this year, the 12th year in a row they get the max amount of primetime games.

-- Four of last five Monday night NFL games are in cold weather cities.

                          **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Talkin' football in April......

                          13) There is a scene early in the movie Draft Day, where the Browns' owner (Frank Langella) tells the Browns' GM (Kevin Costner) to "make a splash" in the upcoming draft, in other words, telling him to draft a QB first.

Thats the first thing I thought of when I heard the Los Angeles Rams traded with Tennessee for the first pick in the April 28-30 NFL Draft. Rams need to sell tickets in their new (old) city, they need to upgrade at QB, whether they played home games in Los Angeles, St Louis, or Oshkosh.

                          12) As far as which QB the Rams are going to take, and they are going to take a QB (this ain't the movies), they're less likely to shy away from a I-AA QB (Carson Wentz) seeing as Jeff Fisher's son played at Montana, which is a rival of North Dakota State at the I-AA level.

I could write about this for a week, but I'll say this: Jeff Fisher presided over the Steve McNair era in Houston/Tennessee; McNair started six games (6) in his first two NFL seasons, playing behind Chris Chandler, so it isn't etched in stone that the rookie QB will start in Week 1 in San Francisco.

                          11) As for the Rams' schedule, LA and Dallas are only two teams who open with a pair of division opponents. Rams play their three division rivals in the first four weeks of the season, then again in the last three weeks.

Quick impressions of the 2016 schedule-- I'll have more on this tomorrow, but I just got off an airplane and my brain is a little scrambled......
                          10) Brock Osweiler returns to Denver in Week 7, when the Texans visit Denver on a Monday night. Browns go to Washington October 2-- RGIII against his old team.

                          9) Over 43,000 possible schedules are considered before the final product is given the seal of approval. TV ratings matter more than the fan who goes to games, seeing as four of the last five Monday night games are in cold weather cities.

                          8) Green Bay Packers open with two road games for first time since 1924, yes 1924; they christen the Vikings' new domed stadium in a Week 2 Sunday night tilt. After the first two road games, Green Bay then doesn't play another road game until Week 8- they've got four home games and a bye in between their second and third road games.

                          7) Week 16 is mostly played on Christmas Eve (a Saturday), with two Christmas games; Week 17 is 16 division games, all on New Year's Day, a Sunday. Steelers play on both Thanksgiving and Christmas Days.

                          6) 8:25 Christmas Eve game with Bengals-Texans should be renamed the Divorce Bowl, fior families who gather on Christmas Eve (its a joke people!!!). Back in the old days, when I was once married, an 8:25 Christmas Eve game would've been an issue. In no way am I complaining that there is a game on Christmas Eve this year. :-)

                          5) Super Bowl rematch in Week 1: Carolina-Denver on a Thursday.

                          4) Pete Carroll has a reunion tour this year: the former USC coach revisits the LA Coliseum in Week 2, for the Rams' first home game there in 37 years- Seattle also visits the Jets in Week 4, and Foxboro in Week 10, Carroll's two former teams. The Week 10 game is also the first Seahawk-Patriot meeting since Super Bowl 49.

                          3) Miami Dolphins have December road games in Baltimore, New Jersey, Buffalo; hope they've got good parkas.

                          2) One more draft note: Tennessee has six of the top 76 picks in the draft and they do not need a QB, so they could improve their team a lot in two weeks.

                          1) Thanks to the $8 I spent on WiFi on my flight home last night, the flight was a lot of fun and seemed fairly short. Got to read lot of NFL schedule stuff on Twitter and follow the Thursday baseball-- best $8 I've spent in a while.

I'll have more on the NFL schedule tomorrow-- I'm going to sleep right now.

                          • MLB betting cheat sheet: Windy City Win Streak

The Pale Hose sits in first place in the AL Central with a record of 6-2 after it's first eight games.

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the weekend major-league schedule:

                            Windy City Win Streak

With seven wins in their first eight games, the Cubs have matched their best start in franchise history. This really comes as no surprise, as the Cubs came into the season as one of the favorites in the National League. Few expected the White Sox to start the season in similar fashion, and Chicago's other team sits in first place in the AL Central with a record of 6-2 after it's first eight games. The White Sox play a three game series in Tampa this weekend, and the Rays are sitting last in the AL East, and rank dead last in the AL in runs scored.

                            Everything Is Bigger In Texas

Most teams have a few big bats in the lineup, but as the old saying goes ... "everything is bigger in Texas". So far the duo of Prince Fielder and Adrian Beltre have combined to drive in 19 runs. The Rangers play a four game series at home versus Baltimore this weekend, and Chris Tillman will go in Game 1. Beltre is 6-for-12 with a home run and three RBIs lifetime versus Tillman. Fielder is 4-for-9 with a home run and three RBIs versus Vance Worely, who will start Game 2.

                            The Untouchables

Two pitchers in the National League have held the opposition scoreless in their first two starts: Chase Anderson of Milwaukee and Kenta Maeda of the Dodgers. Maeda is a 27 year old rookie out of Japan, and he will make his next start at home versus the Giants on Sunday. Anderson's next start comes on the road at Minnesota opposite Phil Hughes on Monday.

                            Hitting Notes

*The New York Mets were expected to be one of the top teams in the National League, but after eight games the Mets are batting a major league worst .194. Things could get worse before they get better, as New York will play it's next nine games on the road.

*Giancarlo Stanton is off to a slow start, but he's played five of his first seven games on the road at Washington and New York. He should be able to get back on track in a home series versus the Braves. Atlanta's pitching staff ranks 29th in the majors, with only Colorado surrendering more runs.

                            Pitching Notes

*Madison Bumgarner and Clayton Kershaw are two of the best pitchers in the majors, and they've already faced off once this season. The Dodgers won that game 3-2, but Bumgarner allowed just one run on six hits, striking out eight in six innings not factoring in the decision. They will meet again on Friday night in Game 1 of a three game series at Chavez Ravine.

*Felix Hernandez is still looking for his first win of the season, despite a minuscule 0.69 ERA with 16 strikeouts in 13 innings in his first two starts. His next start comes on the road at Yankee Stadium, opposite C.C. Sabathia on Saturday.

                            Totals trend

At one point last season the Tigers went over in 19 consecutive games. They have gone over in six of seven games so far this year, and they are in Houston this weekend for a three game series against the Astros. Houston has gone over in six of nine so far, and it's bullpen has been brutal posting an ERA of 6.16 in those games. The over is 37-15-4 in Tigers last 56 road games.

                            Injury Notes

*Yankees Catcher Brain McCann is leading the American League hitting .500 so far. He sat out Wednesday's game in Toronto with a foot injury, and is listed as day to day.

                            * It's been another disastrous start to the season for Pablo Sandoval, and he's landed on the 15 day DL with a shoulder injury.

                            Friday's Weather Report

                            * The Windy City could hold up to its name at Wrigley Field Friday, where the Cubs host the Rockies with an expected 10-12 mile per hour pitchers wind gusting in from right field.

                            * It should also be windy in Arlington when Rangers host the Orioles Friday. There is an expected 10-12 mile per hour pitchers wind gusting in from center field.
