              Marlins, Mets clash in N.Y.
              April 11, 2016

MIAMI MARLINS (1-3) at NEW YORK METS (2-3)

First pitch: Monday, 7:00 p.m. ET
              Sportsbook.ag Line: Miami +140, New York -155, Total: 7.5

Steven Matz and the Mets kick off a three-game set again the division-rival Marlins at Citi Field.

The Mets (2-3) continue their six-game homestand against National League East opponents when they welcome the Marlins (1-3) into Queens on Monday for the first of three contests. Both clubs have gotten off to slow starts in 2016.

After splitting a two-game series with the World Series-champion Royals at Kauffman Stadium, the Mets lost two of three to the lowly Phillies at Citi Field over the weekend. Miami dropped its first two games to the Tigers in Marlins Park before beating the Nationals in Washington, D.C. this past Thursday.

After a rainout on Saturday, the Marlins lost to the Nats, 4-2, on Sunday. Making his season debut for the Amazin’s is LHP Steven Matz (4-0, 2.27 ERA, 34 SOs in six GS in 2015).

He’ll be opposed by RHP Jarred Cosart (2-5, 4.52 ERA, 47 SO, 33 BB in 14 appearances in 2015), who’s also making his first start of this young season.

The Mets went 11-8 against the Marlins last season.

The Marlins only have one victory, but they haven’t had trouble putting runs on the board. They’re batting .278 (fourth in NL) and are averaging 4.5 runs per game. They’ve struggled to get hitters out, however, posting a 5.59 ERA (11th in NL) through their first four games.

              2B Dee Gordon (.421, 1 RBI, .450 OBP, 2 2Bs, 2 3Bs, 1 SB) has been the Marlins’ hottest hitter, and LF Christian Yelich (.364, 1 HR, 2 RBIs, .579 OBP, 1 2B) and 3B Martin Prado (.353, 2 RBIs, 1 3B) have also been stellar at the dish.

RF Giancarlo Stanton (.294, 1 HR, 4 RBIs), the Marlins’ most dangerous hitter, is a good matchup against the left-handed Matz. No Marlins batter has more than three career at-bats against Matz. Cosart faced New York three times in 2015 and recorded three no-decisions, surrendering six earned runs in 18 innings pitched.

The Mets didn’t hit much in the season’s first week (.180 – last in NL, 14 runs – last in NL) but they pitched—as expected—brilliantly. The Amazin’s lead the National League in ERA (2.05) and earned runs allowed (10).

Aside from CF Juan Lagares (.400), who only has five at-bats, LF Michael Conforto (.267, 3 RBIs, .421 OBP, 2 2Bs, 3 BBs) and 3B David Wright (.267, .421 OBP, 2 Rs, 2 2Bs, 4 BBs, 2 SBs) lead the club in average.

LF Yoenis Cespedes (.200, 1 HR, 2 RBIs, 2 BBs) hit his first homer of the season on Sunday, but manager Terry Collins is still waiting for his cleanup hitter to get in a rhythm. Leadoff hitter Curtis Granderson (.050) is just 1-for-20 with six strikeouts to start the season.

3B Wilmer Flores (.000) might get the start—or at least an at-bat—against Cosart, as he’s 4-for-10 against him with a double, a home run and five RBIs. Cespedes has also homered off of Cosart.

The Marlins’ starter is one of the last pitchers that the slumping Granderson wants to see right now, as the left-handed hitter is 0-for-11 against the 25-year-old with a pair of strikeouts. Matz faced the Marlins once in 2015—against Cosart, coincidentally, on September 6—and was solid, surrendering two earned runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings pitched.

Brock on prosthetic leg to throw 1st pitch
                April 10, 2016

ST. LOUIS (AP) If the St. Louis Cardinals need motivation beyond the pomp and circumstance of the home opener, they'll be getting it from one of their on-the-mend Hall of Famers.

Speedster Lou Brock, whose left leg was amputated just below the knee in the offseason, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before Monday's sold-out game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The 76-year-old Brock has been practicing wearing a new prosthesis and supported by braces. When he learned an infection related to diabetes necessitated the operation, the former base stealing record holder had been pointing to the home opener.

Brock stole a National League-record 938 bases, including 118 in 1974, and was known as the Base Burglar. He also had 3,023 hits, becoming a star after a celebrated trade from the Cubs in 1964 for pitcher Ernie Broglio.

He was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes about 15 years ago and the procedure was done in late October.

The three-time defending NL Central champion Cardinals have rebounded after a shaky start. After getting swept by the Pirates in the opening series, mustering one run in two of the losses, they're coming off a sweep of the rebuilding Braves.

''To just kind of play better is where we start,'' manager Mike Matheny said after the Cardinals totaled 31 runs in three games in Atlanta.

They'll get the usual pampered treatment before their first appearance at Busch Stadium, arriving on a fleet of trucks in a convoy around the warning track.

''We can't wait. It's been a couple of months for a lot of us,'' Matheny said. ''Our guys usually try to make it down to spring training early, and that usually does make for a longer start of the season when you start on the road.''

The Brewers also are rebuilding but have been competitive since absorbing a 12-3 drubbing by the Giants in the opener. The bullpen contributed three scoreless innings to beat Houston on Sunday.

''Our patience at the plate, at least the quality of our at-bats, I'm really pleased with that,'' manager Craig Counsell said. ''So that's probably the No. 1 thing that sticks out.''

They've had to be on top of their game from the start with a challenging schedule of the Giants and Astros at home, then the Cardinals and Pirates on the road.

For the second straight season, the Brewers are the opponent for the home opener at Busch.

''No matter what, we're going to have a tough schedule in the division we're in - one of the toughest divisions,'' said Scooter Gennett, off to a surprising start from a power standpoint with three homers. ''The pitching that's in our division is pretty incredible.''

The Cardinals have overcome slow starts by Randall Grichuk, who is 1 for 15 with eight strikeouts, and Matt Holliday, just 4 for 21. Rookies Aledmys Diaz and Jeremy Hazelbaker have been big contributors early.

Closer Trevor Rosenthal and fellow relievers Seung Hwan Oh, Jonathan Broxton, Kevin Siegrist and Matt Bowman have not allowed an earned run in a combined 14 1/3 innings.

The Cardinals begin the day with a pep rally at Ballpark Village more than four hours prior to the first pitch, with Michael Wacha going against Taylor Jungmann. The Budweiser Clydesdales will take their usual lap around the warning track and Gov. Jay Nixon, mayor Francis Slay and St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger are expected to attend.

Busch has two major improvements for its 11th season, with new HD video boards and LED scoreboards, plus expanded backstop netting. The team plans to add WiFi throughout the stadium later this season.

Dodgers open at home in 2nd place with Scully at mic
                  April 11, 2016

LOS ANGELES (AP) After opening the season in San Diego and San Francisco, the Dodgers are finally coming home.

They host the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday, when Japanese star Kenta Maeda (1-0) makes his Dodger Stadium debut and Hall of Fame announcer Vin Scully is behind the mic for the final home opener of his 67-year career.

Many fans attending the sold out game will arrive via newly named Vin Scully Avenue, which dead-ends at the stadium's main gate.

The Dodgers are coming home in second place behind the NL West-leading Giants, who beat them three times in four games last week. Los Angeles opened the season under new manager Dave Roberts with a three-game sweep of the Padres, who got outscored 25-0.

Patrick Corbin (0-1) starts for the last-place Diamondbacks (2-5). The left-hander struck out six without a walk in his first start against Colorado.

                      **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

                      13) I met Pete Rose yesterday; got an autographed ball for a buddy of mine. Pete signs autographs at Mandalay Bay for a few hours most afternoons; $75 for a picture, $99 for a ball- they have a framed bat for a bargain, $1,500. You get your picture taken with him and he'll talk a little bit with you. Seems like a good guy.

                      12) I told him that if his Hall of Fame eligibility was put up for a public vote, that he would win handily. His reply: "They have their own set of rules", referring to MLB. He makes $1M+ a year signing his name, lives here in Vegas, he is doing pretty well.

                      11) Lot of music and movie memorabilia in that store where he signs autographs; you can get a Dave Matthews autographed guitar for $4,500 or an autographed Army helmet from Full Metal Jacket for $1,495. An interesting place.

                      10) Since 2013, St Louis is 40-18 against the Brewers, thw most lopsided series in major league baseball during that time.

                      9) Quote of the Day, part 2: "What the world needs are less mental hospitals and more minor league baseball." Bill Murray, 1982

Went to the Sacramento-Las Vegas minor league baseball game last night, AAA teams of the Giants-Mets, played before a sparse crowd on a pleasant night. Top prospect Brandon Nimmo plays CF for the Mets' AAA team- he showed great range in center..

                      8) Marlins 10, Mets 3-- New York lost three of four at home- it is way too early to go nuts about this, but their pitching has been spotty, deGrom is hurt, Granderson is one for 24, Miami treated Matz like a pinata in this game.

                      7) I watched afternoon baseball games at Mandalay Bay for a couple hours, but the gorgeous big screens at the Westgate have spoiled me. The pizza at Slice in the shopping area at Mandalay Bay was first class, however.

                      6) At one point in March, Baltimore was something like 0-10-2 in spring training games and their TV guys were trying hard not to sound concerned. Now the Orioles are 6-0 and we are reminded that Buck Showalter is a good as any manager without the last name of Bochy.

                      5) Minnesota is 0-7 and it was 42 degrees at their home opener, played outdoors because they weren't smart enough to put a retractable dome on their ballpark, the way the Brewers did in Milwaukee.

                      4) Atlanta is 0-6 but they've openly tanked this season as they acquire prospects who will make the majors when the Braves start playing in their new stadium in suburban Cobb County next season. 15 of their top 30 prospects have been acquired by trade, and they traded some talented older players to get those prospects.

                      3) Josh Jackson committed to Kansas Monday, jumping the Jayhawks from #41 in the 2016 recruiting rankings into the top 10. He is a 6-7 shooting guard.

                      2) Vanderbilt-Marquette and Ohio State-Navy will be a Veterans' Day twinbill in Annapolis next fall. That will be Bryce Drew's first game as Vandy's coach.

                      1) Kings 105, Suns 101-- Seth Curry had 20 points, 15 assists-- he has a players' option to stay in Sacramento next season, or he can become a free agent. I'm thinking someone will overpay for his services, just based on bloodlines.

LEADING OFF: Offense ticking up, Twins falling down
                                April 12, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                                BATTERS UP

It's only been a week, but offensive is back on the rise in major league baseball. Teams averaged 1.14 homers per game through the first week, according to STATS, which is up nearly 26 percent from last season. Teams averaged 4.43 runs per game in the first week, up 6 percent. ''It is a little surprising, particularly early in April, the runs that are being scored,'' Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell said.

                                IT'S EARLY, BUT...

The Twins are 0-7 after dropping their home opener to the White Sox on Monday, and even with less than 5 percent of their schedule complete, a turnaround could be tough. According to STATS, no major league team has ever started 0-7 and qualified for the postseason. Three teams did so after dropping their first six games: Pittsburgh (1974), Cincinnati (1995) and Tampa Bay (2011).

                                HEAT INDEX

Marlins ace Jose Fernandez faces Mets flamethrower Noah Syndergaard in a game matching two of baseball's most electric young arms - Syndergaard was first and Fernandez fifth among major league starters in average fastball velocity last season, minimum 60 innings. ''It's going to be exciting to see,'' Mets manager Terry Collins said. ''If you're a baseball fan, you're going to enjoy (Tuesday) night.'' Both pitchers are 23, born less than a month apart. ''With Jose, you match him up with anybody, you really don't care. At that point, you think that your guy is as good as anybody out there,'' Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. ''You feel like he's capable of throwing zeros with anybody.''

                                MORE MAEDA

Kenta Maeda makes his second major league start when the Dodgers host the Diamondbacks. In his debut, the Japanese right-hander struck out four and walked none during six scoreless innings in a 7-0 win over San Diego.

                                GIO'S TURN, FINALLY

Gio Gonzalez finally makes his first start in Washington's sixth game, more than two weeks after his final spring training appearance. The Nats' quirky schedule - including two planned off days and a postponement so far - has allowed manager Dusty Baker to shuffle the rotation. Baker and pitching coach Mike Maddux want Gonzalez slotted between Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg, and holding Gonzalez back until the sixth game allowed that to happen.

                                NOT AFRAID

Horror novelist Stephen King has taken a public stance against new safety netting installed at Fenway Park and other stadiums intended to protect fans from foul balls and flying bats. In an opinion piece published in The Boston Globe , King said the netting is ''one more step toward taking the taste and texture out of the game I care for above all others.''
