Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but……..

      — I’m sitting here in the middle of the night, about to turn the TV off and listen to music while I put this together, and what do I find but a spring football league on FS1.

It is called the Spring League, and it has eight teams in it. I think they played in the Alamodome in San Antonio last year- this game was at Rice Stadium in Houston, which once hosted a Super Bowl (Dolphins over Vikings maybe???)

FS1 had their best college football announcers calling the game, so I watched for a while.

      — Watched some of this last year; there are guys in it who have played in the NFL, including QB Ryan Mallett, who hasn’t played pro football since 2017. He started eight games for Texans/Ravens in 2014-15, then kind of went away. Now he is trying to make a comeback.

      — There was a kicker from the CFL with a very long name who kicked four field goals, including a 59-yarder; hard to believe he won’t get an invite to an NFL camp. You make 59-yard field goals and it doesn’t matter if you’re in the California Penal League, the NFL will find you.

      — Kevin Gilbride was coaching one of the teams; the guy will be 70 in August, he hasn’t been in the NFL since 2013, but he’s still out there coaching, trying to get guys to the next level.

      — One of the teams is called the Jousters, which is a tremendous nickname. Good logo, too.

      — So the Jousters give up a 65-yard TD pass, but the receiver has to be a show-off and drops the ball right at the goal line, it was really hard to tell if he had crossed the line or not, they review the play and say it was a touchdown.

This is a pet peeve of mine; you’re playing in front of no fans, except on TV, busting your butt to make it to an NFL camp- after you make a great play to score a touchdown, you do something STUPID to risk that touchdown not counting.

Coaches who lose get fired; teams that fumble on the 1-yard line lose.

Anyway, sounds like The Spring League will be on the next few weeks, which is good.

      — I’ve never had coffee, ever; am I the only person who has never had it?

My parents drank it, but to me, coffee grounds looked like mud, and why would you drink something that came from mud?

I worked for the Division of Criminal Justice in Albany for 34 years; had a boss once who always and I mean always, had a coffee mug in his hand. It was like it was permanently attached to his hand. He was a good guy, let us be us, but damn he drank a lot of coffee.

      — I’m a big believer that they should re-do how basketball assists are measured.

If a pass leads to a 3-point basket, it should be 1.5 assists, since 3 points is more than 2.

If a pass leads to free throws, it should be 0.5 assists for every foul shot made; those points count just as much as baskets made.

I used to keep track of assist opportunities, how many assists guys would have had if all the shots had been made— some guys create easier shots with their passes.

      5) Warriors 119, Jazz 116— Here is Golden State’s record, based on Steph Curry’s scoring:
      — 8-2 if he scores 40+
      — 16-9 if he scores 35+. He had 36 in this game.
      — 10-14 if he scores less than 30
      — 5-8 if he scores less than 25.

      4) Only once in their last 13 games has the Padres’ starting pitcher finished the 6th inning; their bullpen is going to be worn out by August, unless they trade for new guys.

      3) In their last 19 games, Dodgers are 0-6 in games where the winning run scores from the 7th inning on- they’ve lost 15 of last 20 games overall.

      2) Celtics’ star Jaylen Brown tore a ligament in his wrist, is out for the year.

      1) Las Vegas Raiders’ backup QB Marcus Mariota is from Hawai’i; he went to St Louis HS, where his backup was Ka’ai Tom, who last night played leftfield and batted 3rd for the Pirates.

Pretty good high school team, with two major league athletes on it.

          Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings……..

          13) News today signals that the A’s will start looking away from Oakland, to find a new ballpark to call home. Apparently playing at the Oakland Coliseum isn’t feasible in the long run, so now the big business of baseball kicks in— will the A’s leave Oakland for greener pa$ture$?

          12) Baseball is going to expand to 32 teams pretty soon, but they’ve said the stadium situations for the A’s/Rays will be clarified, before the expansion cities are chosen.

Cities like Montreal, Nashville, Portland, Charlotte, San Jose and apparently Las Vegas are mentioned as new MLB locations. I can see the A’s moving to Portland or Las Vegas, the Rays moving north to Montreal, and Nashville getting an expansion team. Not sure if Charlotte is a viable alternative.

          11) I’ve been an A’s fan since I was five years old, back in the mid-60’s; lot of history in that decrepit old Coliseum, both baseball/football. Will be a sad day if the A’s leave Oakland.

          10) There would be one place the A’s could move that would be a vast improvement, and that is San Jose, an hour south of Oakland. Most everything would remain the same except for a new ballpark; lot of money in that area, but there is one small problem before that happens.

San Francisco Giants have been blocking the A’s from moving there for years; they have the territorial rights to San Jose, even though they have no intention of ever going there.

You can see the A’s ballpark in Oakland from the Giants’ ballpark across the bay, but they won’t let them move an hour away. Go figure.

          9) As far as Las Vegas goes, I love it there, have been there 28 times since 2009— living in New York, that’s a lot of air mileage. But five years ago, Las Vegas had no major league sports teams; UNLV basketball was their #1 thing.

Now all of a sudden, three major league teams in five years? Town isn’t that big.

          8) San Diego Padres’ SS Fernando Tatis tested positive for COVID, is on the IL.

          7) Tim Tebow is going to sign on as a tight end with the Jaguars; his old college coach is the new coach in Jacksonville (Urban Meyer). Am guessing Tebow would also play special teams and be the #3 emergency QB. How much different is he than the Saints’ Taysom Hill?

          6) Dodgers 6, Mariners 4— Gavin Lux hits a 3-run bomb in the 8th inning for LA.

          5) Tigers 8, Royals 7— Kansas City lost its last nine games, gave up 26 runs in last three; they were down 7-0 in 8th inning of this game, tied it up, then lost it in the last inning.

          4) Indians 3, Cubs 2— Terry Francona must’ve really wanted this game; he left Bieber in for 121 pitches, most in MLB this season. Indians won seven of their last eight games.

          3) If the playoffs started today (they don’t):
NL: Mets-Cardinals-Giants Wild Card: SD is #1, Phil/Mil/LA tied for last spot
AL: Red Sox, White Sox, A’s. Wild Card: New York @ Cleveland

          2) Zion Williamson broke his finger when he was fouled last week, then I hear the Pelicans’ GM whining because Williamson got fouled and referees aren’t calling the games tight enough.

The NBA is soft now; watch some old games from the 80’s/90’s, there was actual competition, where hard fouls were often committed in the name of winning. Today a guy breaks his finger and his GM whines in the media. Get tougher, people.

          1) NFL’s 2021 schedule comes out tonight; each team will play 17 games now, with all the NFC teams having an extra road game this season. Will be a lot to talk about tomorrow.

Thursday’s Den: Quick thoughts on the 2021 NFL schedule

I’ll have more on the NFL schedule over the next few days, but here are some early thoughts on the 2021 schedule:

              — NFL teams will play 17 games this season for the first time; exhibition games have been reduced to three. AFC teams get the extra home game this season.

              — Regular season ends January 9th, with games in Buffalo and Cleveland. Have fun!!!

              — Jets traded QB Sam Darnold to Carolina this winter; the wise guys who create the schedule created an interesting Week 1 matchup, Jets @ Carolina. Go figure, a coincidence I’m sure.

              — Christmas is on a Saturday, Halloween is a Sunday this year; there are two Christmas games. Browns-Packers, Colts-Cardinals. Which casino will I be watching those games in?

              — This has nothing to do with football, but Halloween weekend in Las Vegas is tremendous, take my word on that.

              — Cowboys-Buccaneers is the Week 1 Thursday game, where the defending champ traditionally opens the next season at home. Home team is 15-3 SU in this game the last 18 years, 11-3-4 against the spread.

              — Don’t think the NFL foresees Aaron Rodgers being traded to Denver; Broncos have one game on in prime-time, Green Bay has five.

              — NFL doesn’t think much of the Patriots; only three primetime games, one of which is Tom Brady’s return to Foxboro in Week 4.

              — Thanksgiving Day slate:
Bears @ Detroit, Raiders @ Dallas, Bills @ New Orleans

              — Non-schedule news; Green Bay signed backup QB Blake Bortles, re-uniting him with OC Nathaniel Hackett- they worked together in Jacksonville from 2015-18.

              — Division rivals Carolina/Tampa Bay have their two meetings in weeks 16/18.

              — I’m totally befuddled that Rams-Lions isn’t a primetime game. Detroit got one game on in primetime, at Green Bay in Week 2. Very surprised by this, seeing how the teams swapped quarterbacks this winter. ESPN obviously didn’t want the game.

Every team got at least one primetime game; eight teams got just one.

              — Four teams have the earliest byes, Week 6— Falcons, Saints, Jets, 49ers.

              — Four teams have the latest byes, Week 14— Colts, Dolphins, Patriots, Eagles.

              — Nine teams got the maximum five primetime games.

              — Cardinals/Chargers have three prime-time games, all at home, which is odd. Giants got three primetime games, all on the road— they can’t be real happy about that.

Saturday’s Den: Random stuff with the weekend here…….

                          13) We start today with good news; got my second vaccine shot Friday, and all is well. My left arm is a little sore; hell, some lady stuck a needle in it, but everything else is good.

The whole vaccine thing is a VERY efficient, simple operation; if you haven’t gotten yours, please do, so all of us can get our lives back to normal.

                          12) Since start of last season, Chicago White Sox are 23-1 vs lefty starting pitchers.

                          11) Cleveland hurler Zach Plesac has already been on the losing end of two no-hitters this season, but Thursday night in Seattle, Plesac took a no-hitter of his own into the 8th inning.

He didn’t get the no-hitter or a shutout, but he did get a 4-2 road win.

                          10) Modern baseball: Thursday night in Pittsburgh, Giants led the Pirates 3-0 in top of the 6th; their pitcher Anthony DeSclafani, was throwing a one-hit shutout, but when his time to bat came up with a couple of men on, Giants pinch-hit for him, despite his dominant pitcher to that point in the game.

DeSclafani faced 17 batters; more and more, teams don’t want their pitchers facing hitters three times in a game. It is a little weird to me, puts too much strain on the bullpen over the course of a six-month season.

                          9) Royals’ star Whit Merrifield has played in 344 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the major leagues.

                          8) Umpire Bill Miller is a pitcher’s best friend; he did the plate in a 1-0 game at Tampa Bay this week, and had batters on both sides mumbling. One walk, 23 strikeouts in the game.

                          7) On July 31, 2017, A’s traded Sonny Gray to New York for three prospects, two of whom have long since left Oakland; the third guy is P James Kaprelian, who made his first MLB start this week in Boston.

Kaprelian struggled out of the game, but gave up only one run in five IP, throwing 95 pitches in Oakland’s 4-1 win. It took almost four years, but the A’s finally got something out of that trade.

                          6) On December 3, 2018, this trade was made:
                          — Mets got 36-year old Robinson Cano, closer Edwin Diaz
                          — Mariners got OF prospect Jarred Kelenic, Jay Bruce, Justin Dunn and a couple journeyman pitchers.

                          Advantage, Mariners.

Kelenic debuted in the major leagues Thursday; last night, he homered and hit two doubles in Seattle’s 7-3 win over Cleveland. He looked really good, which could wind up making the Mets look really bad.

                          5) More and more, teams are starting to walk the leadoff hitter in the 10th inning, to create a force play, making it harder to bunt the go-ahead run to third base. Not sure if the new extra innings rule will survive after this year, but it is making people think.

                          4) Milwaukee P Corbin Burnes set a new MLB record when he struck out 52 batters before he walked someone this year.

Problem for Burnes, is, he’s started four games at home, and the Brewers were shut out in three of them. Go figure.

                          3) I’m wondering when a player disputes balls/strikes with an umpire, do they taunt the ump about robots taking their place someday? It is going to happen; there was a time when the umpires’ union was very powerful- for a long time, you couldn’t show instant replays of close calls on the scoreboards, but those days are long gone.

                          2) If the playoffs started today (they don’t):
NL- Mets, Cardinals, Giants. Wild Card: Dodgers @ Padres
AL- Red Sox, White Sox, A’s. Wild Card: Astros @ Indians

                          1) Owners at the Talladega NASCAR track in Alabama are offering people a free ride around the track in a race car, if they get the COVID vaccine; they’re offering free beer in Buffalo, savings bonds in West Virginia, entry into a lottery in Ohio.

It is pretty sad when people have to bribe you to get a shot that could save YOUR life.
